RS_Zest

Our newest fleet, the RS Zest, is a fun, exciting and award-winning boat that has been built to meet the demands of a sailing school. Here at Hoofers the boat supports our youth program as well as providing an entry-level dinghy for members. With a rotomolded polyethylene hull, the boat is durable, extremely stable, and is designed to be a simple as possible for the novice sailor. The boat can be both cat rigged (just the mainsail) or sloop rigged with the optional jib.

Techs

The Badger Tech is the Hoofer Sailing Club's unique sailing dinghy. It is the secret to the club’s success. It is perfect for instruction: its rigging is easy to learn for beginning sailors, it is easy to un-capsize, and its heavy-duty hull is designed to withstand… a little bump here and there.

The Hoofer Sailing Club has a total of 30 Badger Techs, with an average of 20 ready to sail on any given day. Tech Racing happens most Friday evenings starting at around 5:30.

The first Tech dinghies were wooden craft designed by the at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and their descendants still ply the waters of Charles River in Boston at the MIT Sailing Pavilion.

The Hoofer Sailing Club sailed Techs from its early days until 1967. That year, club commodore Peter Harken adapted the MIT design to create the Badger Tech. He expanded the bow air tank, then rounded off the gunnels and deepened the transom to create even more flotation. His design makes for a heavy boat, but one that's served the club for 5 decades and counting.

Sloops

The Badger Sloop is an 18 foot sloop rigged boat unique to the Hoofer Sailing Club. Fast and stable, the Badger Sloop is the ideal boat for afternoons on the lake with friends and racing alike. An excellent boat for both beginners and experienced sailors, the Badger Sloop is a great introduction to sailing larger boats and never fails to deliver a fun experience, no matter one's level of experience. It is based on the Interlake design, but with a flatter bow and more room fore to aft for seating. Our fleet of eight boats was built by Windward Boatworks of Middleton, WI. With a large, open cockpit, the Badger Sloop accommodates up to six including the skipper, allowing you to share the sailing experience with up to 5 of your friends.

420S

The 420 is a superb boat for junior sailing programs, with over 3,000 boats sailed in youth programs all over the United States and Canada. These are also the boats used by our collegiate sailing team to compete at a local and national level. At 420 cm in length they are the smaller version of the Olympic class boat the 470. They move well, even in lighter air, and on a good day will plane out and scream across the lake. These boats are a ton of fun in a race or just a day sail. Definitely make a point of getting your 420 rating, or finding someone with theirs who you can go out with.

Lasers & Bytes

Lasers

The Laser is a 14’ one-design racing dinghy has a huge sail area to weight ratio, making the boat very agile and quick. This design provides a more challenging (but don’t worry almost anyone can learn to sail one!) and fun sailing experience than most small dinghies! Designed in the late 60’s and introduced in 1971, the boat’s speed and aggressive behavior quickly made it popular with dinghy sailors all over the world.

The Byte is a small and fast sailing dinghy sailed by one person. It is basically a Laser for smaller people. The Byte is designed for sailors weighing 120 to 145 pounds although most sailors weighing 90 to 160 pounds should have no problems sailing this boat.

Our Byte fleet was funded by a large donation by John Kirsch, who loved to sailed them since he was too thin to sail Lasers properly in heavy winds. He thought we should have a fleet for youth and lighter men and women that was as fun and educational as the Lasers.

Threescows

Here at Hoofers, the Scow Fleet consists of a number of E-scows, C-scows and MC-Scows. Built as a performance boat, the scows are particularly fun for those interested in racing and becoming a competitive sailor. However, due to their size, many people enjoy sailing the scows at Hoofers for fun, the most popular being either the C-scow or the E-scow. Scows can be sailed with a variety of people on board, the most common number being two and going up to five. Come and check out the Scow Fleet for all your racing interests if you're down at the Lakefront!

Light Keelboats

Lightkeels

Whether your style is weeknight beer-can racing or competing on the world stage; the J/24 is undeniably the most popular racing keelboat to make waves around the world. This appealing keelboat started with one man's desire for a sailboat to accommodate his family and to be a competitive racer. Twenty-seven years later, the J/24 has become a legend. A stable sailboat for family togetherness, the J/24 has also been the competitive launch pad for the careers of numerous America's Cup professionals.

While some of the world's best sailors have the latest version J/24, a well-prepared 1977 model, built to the same shape and weight with rigid end-grained balsa core construction can still win the J/24 Class world championship even after 30,000+ miles of trailering. That's "One Design" racing! The International J/24 is presently built in the U.S., Argentina and Italy and has more than 50,000 people sailing 5,200 boats in 27 countries.

The Capri 22 was introduced in 1983 as a high-performance family racer/cruiser that could be trailer-sailed or kept dockside. Designed by Gary Mull (of America's Cup lineage) and Frank Butler, it was intended to be Catalina Yacht's answer to the highly successful J-24. More than 1,000 Capri 22s have been built in the last 20 years. The CP22 has proven to be a stable, safe boat, yet one that is fast and fun to sail.

Catalina 22

"Simplicity, trailerability, durability and the endearing and enduring qualities of the Catalina 22 helped to launch the trailer sailing market. She's one of our two swing keel craft, a feature that allows trailer launching and recovering like a powerboat, yet very nearly achieves the sailing performance of a boat with a fixed keel. The Chargeback boasts a spacious cockpit, easy handling characteristics, and lightning fast rigging and de rigging thanks to the roller furling jib. She's Perfect for a day out on the water with friends and family, or as a trainer for the clubs larger cruising oriented Heavy Keelboats.

Tartans Flying Chute

Tartan 10s - Siege, Ratty & Rhubarb Siege, Sassafras and Rhubarb are Tartan 10s, 33ft fractional rig sloops designed for racing. They are the largest boats in the hoofer fleet and have all raced on the Great Lakes! Siege was first sailed at Hoofers in the summer of 2017 while Sassafras and Rhubarb started their Hoofer careers in the 2018 season. Like the popular J24, the T-10s are a one-design class meaning that they are limited to the same sails, crew size and other modifications to keep racing competitive based on skill. Experienced and beginner sailors can crew the T-10s in the Mendota Yacht Club races, learning skills such as sailing under spinnaker, fine tuning sail trim, reading the wind and geometry of a course and timing a start. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartan_Ten . And https://www.tten.com/ for more information and tips on sailing these popular boats.

Spray Spray is a Sovrel 30 – a 30 ft classic cruising yacht made in 1973. Norbert and Ruth Schmitz, former Hoofer members, sailed over 20 summers on the Great Lakes with their family on Spray before donating to Hoofers in 2003. In 2006 Spray was refurbished with the hard work of dedicated Hoofer members – giving experience in boat repair and maintenance as well as refreshing Spray for generations of Hoofer sailors. Spray is built for stability with 3500 lbs of lead ballast off her keel and a centerboard that increases the draft from 4 ft to 8 ft 4 in. Lessons on Spray focus on cruising and basic sailing skills including care and use of the inboard diesel engine.

Salam Salam is an Ericson 26 and her name comes from the Arabic word meaning "Peace." She is part of the club's cruising keelboat fleet, (which also includes Spray and Knotty Rascal), and is appointed with many creature comfort features traditionally found on cruising sail boats. With nearly a 5 ft draft and a spacious cabin the Ericson 26 is designed to be comfortable for daysailing.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing

The Yu Chen Windsurfing Fleet is made up of a large variety of sails and boards. Sails range in size from 3.0 to 7.5 (measured in square meters); our most popular sizes run anywhere from a 4.0 to a 6.5. Boards range in volume and size from wide, stable boards that make learning a breeze, to small "sinker" boards that allow you to get out in the windiest conditions.

The fleet was renamed in rememberence of Yu Chen in 2017. If you are interested in learning more about Yu, and his impact on those around him, his biography can be here.

SPE Composites Connection

News and op-ed on polymer composite technology, spe composites division supports build out of badger tech sailboat.

On June 14, 2013 I had the honor to attend the commissioning of the Badger Tech sailboat on the lakefront of Lake Mendota, Madison, WI. The sailboat was manufactured at the University of Wisconsin’s Mechanical Engineering department. The SPE Composites Division donated the funds needed to purchase a license for the PAM-RTM simulation software. The development of the sailboat revolved around an Introduction to Composites Processing course initiated by Prof. Tim Osswald. The course covered composites manufacturing theory in addition to a main project, which was building the Badger Tech. They performed flow and FEA simulations in addition to the complete lay-out and molding. The course was taken by 26 students during the spring semester. Another course is being taught over the summer. The course included a lot of engineering students who are also part of the UW Hoofers Sailing Club.

Boat hull-1

PAM-RTM was used by the students to simulate the resin flow through the fiber layup in the boat molds by considering different configurations proposed by the students for the location of inlets.

Boat hull - infusion simulation

I was very impressed by the leadership and motivation of the students I met. Building a composites part like this for the first time is not an easy task. They worked very hard to provide a finished product that functions and looks great.

I am proud of the Composites Division providing support and taking part on this project. This is the type of program that helps the development of composites knowledge at the student level. Also, a paper is in the works that will be submitted to the ANTEC 2014 conference.

Antoine Rios, Secretary SPE Composites Division

UW Hoofers Badger Tech Sailboat 3D Model

No description provided.

The oft-asked question is not only why is Badger such a good yacht, but specifically, why is she a good yacht for voyaging on a small income? 34' Sailing Dory Badger One of Badger's greatest attractions is that she is actually designed for a couple. Most boats of her size have at least six berths and therefore the rest of the accommodation has to be built in around them. On many boats that are used for voyaging, the quarter berths are used for storage. However, on Badger , one can readily gain access to the space under the cockpit, so this area can be used for much more efficient stowage. 34' Sailing Dory Badger Badger is designed to have a large and usable galley, a necessity on any serious voyaging yacht. She has a pleasant saloon with room for bookshelves and a double cabin. The head is large enough so that you can close the door and have a shower. She has a full-width/raised-deck cabin from cockpit to forward cabin, which gives a great sense of spaciousness and is much stronger, structurally, than a conventional coach-roof. There is room for a heating stove. The dory hull gives a wide flat floor, which allows for the accommodation to be pushed further to the sides of the boat without you having to stand on the sides of the hull. She is comfortable to live on both while at sea and in harbor. 34' Sailing Dory Badger Plywood is a simple, quick and strong material with which to build. By shopping around carefully it can be bought for a very reasonable outlay and if you are building while working, it is possible to buy a little at a time. If you are using epoxy, it is not necessary to choose the best quality marine ply - well made exterior will be very satisfactory. When epoxy is used, you don't need expensive fastenings, which tend to make up for the initial cost of the glue. Glued construction has the advantage that it doesn't leak, a great advantage for any boat. The yacht is of moderate displacement, meaning that the initial building costs are also moderate. An advantage of plywood that is rarely mentioned is that it is very easy to repair because the damaged area can be cut out and a new piece or pieces scarfed in. 34' Sailing Dory Badger On deck, Badger is simple and uncluttered, with a small footwell aft, clear center deck and a sunken foredeck which keeps spray away from the cockpit area and allows a solid dinghy to be carried without impeding the helmsman's view. She has plenty of hatches for ventilation. The deck boxes abaft the back of the cabin allow petrol (gasoline) to be stored safely and provide a home for the tails from the sheets and halyards. They also make very comfortable seats. The rudder is hung outboard, for ease of maintenance. The junk rig is possibly the best short-handed cruising rig ever devised. It is also very inexpensive to build and to maintain. It allows more room below decks and is uncluttered above decks. 34' Sailing Dory Badger Badger can be built simply and for very little money. Sheathed in cloth and epoxy she is easy to maintain and can be kept up to standard at very little expense - an essential prerequisite for a boat that is sailed on a small income.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine claimed Tuesday it has sunk another Russian warship in the Black Sea using high-tech sea drones as Kyiv’s forces take aim at targets well behind the war’s front line. Russian authorities did not confirm the claim.

The Ukrainian military intelligence agency said a special operations unit destroyed the large patrol ship Sergey Kotov overnight. The ship, which Ukraine said was commissioned in 2021 and was hit near the Kerch Strait , reportedly can carry cruise missiles and around 60 crew.

The sinking of such a modern ship would be a significant loss and embarrassing blow for Moscow, even though there are dozens of other vessels in its Black Sea fleet.

Kyiv officials say some 20% of Russian missile attacks on Ukraine are launched from the Black Sea, and successful Ukrainian attacks have dented Moscow’s capability.

FILE - IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi attends a joint press conference with head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Mohammad Eslami in Tehran, Saturday, March 4, 2023. Iran has further increased its total stockpile of uranium, according to a report by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog seen by The Associated Press on Monday, and continues to bar several of the most experienced inspectors from monitoring its nuclear program. The IAEA report estimated that as of Feb. 10, Iran’s total enriched uranium stockpile was at 5,525.5 kilograms, an increase of 1038.7 kilograms since the last quarterly report in November 2023. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi, File)

Patrol ships such as the Sergey Kotov are part of Russia’s countermeasures against drone attacks, according to an article published last month by the Foreign Policy Research Institute, a U.S. think tank. The vessels use radar and a helicopter to detect and destroy drones using grenade launchers and heavy machine guns, it said.

Kyiv’s forces are struggling to keep the better-provisioned Russian army at bay at some points along the largely static 1,500-kilometer (930-mile) front line, but are also taking aim at targets far beyond it.

In the Black Sea , Ukrainian successes against enemy warships have pushed the Russian fleet away from the coast, allowing Ukraine to set up a grain export corridor .

The Ukraine defense ministry posted on X, formerly Twitter, a video of what it said was the nighttime attack on the Sergey Kotov using Magura V5 uncrewed vessels that are designed and built in Ukraine and laden with explosives. Seven Russian crew members were killed and six were injured, while 52 were rescued, the military intelligence agency said.

The Ukrainian claims could not immediately be independently verified. Disinformation has been a feature of the fighting that broke out after Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

The private security firm Ambrey said the attack took place at the port of Feodosia, in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. Ambrey said it has seen footage taken by a crew member on a merchant vessel in the port, showing the Sergey Kotov firing at the drones.

The ship was hit at least twice, with the second strike resulting in a large blast, Ambrey reported.

Last month, Ukraine claimed it twice sank Russian warships using drones. On Feb. 1, it claimed to have sunk the Russian missile-armed corvette Ivanovets, and on Feb. 14 it said it destroyed the Caesar Kunikov landing ship. Russian officials did not confirm those claims.

Almost two years ago, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, the Moskva guided-missile cruiser , sank after it was heavily damaged in a missile attack.

Also Tuesday, the Russian military scrambled a Su-27 fighter jet to escort a French E-3F military surveillance plane, accompanied by two Rafale fighter jets, in international air space over the Black Sea.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the Su-27 was scrambled to “prevent a violation of the state border of the Russian Federation,” adding that the French planes turned away from the Russian border after the Russian jet approached.

Moscow has repeatedly accused NATO allies of gathering intelligence information to assist Ukrainian strikes on Russian forces.

In November, the Russian military threatened to shoot down a French surveillance aircraft patrolling in international airspace. French officials said the Russian military issued the warning in a radio exchange with one of the French early warning and control aircraft as it flew over international waters in the Black Sea.

Associated Press writer Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, contributed to this report.

It comes after a heating main ruptured at the Klimovsk Specialised Ammunition Plant in Podolsk, about 30 miles south of central Moscow, on January 4. As a result, tens of thousands of Russians are said to be without heat in their homes in the Moscow region due to subzero temperatures.

According to a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and circulated on various social media platforms, the affected areas include cities such as Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk.

Residents in Moscow, specifically Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino, are also experiencing power outages, according to other Russian media reports.

Power outages have been reported in St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Primorsky. Meanwhile, a huge fire tore through a large warehouse used by Russia ’s largest online retailer south of St Petersburg on Saturday morning.

The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters, with 50,000 square meters of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to Russia ’s Emergency Situations Ministry. No casualties were reported.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show employees running down fire escapes and fleeing the scene. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Why this Ethiopian navy officer ended up as a metro driver

'I've seen everything there is to see overground'

Tall, smiling Worku Bedasso is a bit of a legendary figure at the Moscow Metro. When asked how he ended up working here, he says noncommittally: "It just happened!"

In Soviet times, the young lieutenant of the Ethiopian Navy came here to study on an exchange program: first in Georgia in 1985, and a couple of years later in Azerbaijan. While Worku was learning how to build socialism, a civil war broke out in his native Ethiopia, and “old-school” officers were no longer needed by the new state. His wife and children remained in Ethiopia; they did not want to go to Russia. A few weeks later, the Soviet Union collapsed and foreign students based in Baku were sent to Moscow.

In Moscow, he was granted refugee status and issued with a work permit; however, during the 1998 economic crisis it was hard to find work. Then, his new Russian girlfriend, Olga, suggested he try working at a metro depot, since he was good with machinery. After six months of training, the former officer became a metro driver assistant.

“The first time felt strange and even scary,” Worku recalls. “But a military background helps. A metro driver needs to have stress tolerance, army discipline and a desire to work hard.”

While on the job, Worku enrolled at the Railways Institute (MIIT) to get a degree in engineering. However, it turned out that combining work and studies was too difficult and in 1999, he decided to quit the job...

By 2010, when he had decided to return to the Moscow Metro, Worku had been working for a logistics company in Moscow and Sochi, had married Olga and received a Russian passport. He once again had to make the journey from a driver assistant to a Category 1 driver, and looking back on it today, he is quite happy with his life: “It's fun to drive a train and get good money for it.” Furthermore, in all his years of working, he has never had any accidents: he attributes it to good luck.

That said, at the age of 62, he has started to think of ending his career as a driver and move to a job at a metro depot. “When you are young, you don’t feel the workload, but at my age it’s getting a bit hard! I don’t want to part with the metro. I have seen everything there is to see overground.”

'I’ve said everything about Dostoyevsky. But I’ve loved trains since I was a kid!'

Anton Khlynin studied Russian language and literature at Moscow State University and even spent a year and a half as a PhD student. But at some point, he realized it was time to stop. Anton seems a very serious man until he turns with his back to you and you see a biker's braid popping out from under the collar of his uniform.

“At university, I had a research topic that I thought was very interesting - the perception of Dostoevsky’s works in Scandinavian countries,” - says Anton. “He is the main writer there. I took it up with great fervor, but as I was writing my thesis, I found out that this subject had already been thoroughly researched by another academic. I was extremely disappointed.”

Academia no longer appeals to Anton, although he is still interested in literature: he even writes himself, albeit articles about railways. In 2007, he decided to fulfill his childhood dream and go work as an engine driver.

“I have been a fan of railways since the age of five. My first memory is seeing a locomotive on the tracks.”

Anton is now 40 and he recently qualified as a 2nd grade driver, by coming in the top three places in a professional competition. Unlike his colleague, Worku, Anton has seen many emergency situations in his career.

“Once, a passenger fell on the tracks at Park Pobedy [station] (dark blue line), but I managed to hit the breaks in time. Also, there are diggers who are just looking for adventure,” says Anton.  “When I was a kid, I was a member of a railway modeling club, and then of a literary society. I had things to do. Whereas they, it seems, have nothing to do!"

Yet, despite everything, Anton insists he does not regret having changed his career so drastically, even though he admits seeing trains in his dreams, too. “I used to occasionally dream I was running a red light, or that my train was derailing. But now all that is gone and I sleep normally!”

When asked whether knowledge of literature helps him in his work, Anton replies philosophically: “My general level of education helps me in my life. And work is part of life.”

'I drive 2,000 people during rush hour!'

When you look at tall, youthful Vadim Kalugin, it is hard to believe that he is one of the oldest drivers on the Moscow Metro, a veteran of labor. Vadim is 55 years old, and he has spent most of his life underground. Now he is a 1st grade driver. He joined the Moscow Metro straight after returning from military service, on advice from his mother-in-law.

“She herself worked in the aircraft industry and knew what responsible work meant. And she liked the uniform that metro drivers had,” Vadim recalls. “By the way, we are sometimes called ‘underground pilots’. But a pilot carries 300 people on a plane, while I drive more than 2,000 people during rush hour! I think our job involves even more responsibility.”

According to Vadim, the Moscow Metro is not only the most beautiful, but also the most reliable. “Even in the 1990s, during the economic crisis, when many people did not receive their wages, metro drivers were always paid on time and metro trains were on schedule. After all, if the metro stops, the whole of Moscow will stop.”

Vadim says that the main thing in his work is to strictly follow the instructions. “In the metro, everything happens at lightning speed! The driver has no right to make a mistake. In my 34 years of work, I have never had a single reprimand,” he says, adding that, sadly, he is still going to retire next year.
