How to Repair Your Cabin Sole? [Ultimate Guide]

When you think about sailing and sailboat maintenance, few people would stop to give much attention to the cabin sole. Thousands of pages of instructions have been written about how to repair your engine or tune your rig, but very little has been written about the floor of the cabin.

Despite the fact that it receives very little attention in the boating community, the cabin sole is actually a lot more important than you might think. After all, nobody wants to step into the cabin and end up standing in the bilge!

In this article, we are going to explore some of the most common issues that sailors experience with their cabin soles, and how to repair or replace the cabin sole after it has incurred damage. What is a Cabin Sole and What Materials are Used to Build Them?

The cabin sole is the floor that you stand on in the cabin of a sailboat. The sole typically rests on floorboards that separate the bilge from the main cabin interior.

Depending on the make of your boat, a variety of materials can be used to construct the cabin sole. Below, we will review some of the most popular types of materials that are used to build a cabin sole.

In many smaller and cheaper cruising sailboats, the cabin sole is built from the same fiberglass used to construct the hull and the deck.

When used to build the cabin sole, the fiberglass is often “cored”, which means that there are two layers of fiberglass foam or wood in the center to stiffen the material without the extra weight and cost of solid fiberglass.

Most sailboats with a fiberglass cabin sole have one or more removable access ports to inspect the bilge below. To make the cabin more inviting, many sailors cover the fiberglass sole with a rug or small carpet.

Plywood with veneer

This is one of the most common materials that is used to build the cabin sole on commercially produced sailboats. With this type of construction, the cabin sole is built primarily from plywood, with a small layer of hardwood veneer to give it a professional look.

Plywood with veneer-style cabin soles can look almost identical to solid hardwood if they have been professionally built. But after long periods of exposure to water, the veneer can peel off, leaving the plywood exposed to potential rot.

If your vessel has this type of cabin sole, make sure to check regularly for any delamination or moisture getting into the plywood, as this can cause serious problems later on.

Solid teak or holly

This is by far the best type of cabin sole for a cruising sailboat. If it’s properly built, a solid teak or holly cabin sole should last longer than both the boat and its owner!

The only disadvantage is the high cost and difficulty to obtain the materials, as hardwoods become harder to buy.

If you are looking for a middle path between solid teak and a veneer-style cabin sole, bamboo may be the perfect alternative.

Bamboo cabin soles have just recently hit the market, but they have very positive reviews so far. Bamboo is much cheaper to obtain than teak and it’s fast-growing, so it’s easier on the environment too!

What Damage Can Occur to Your Cabin Sole Over Time?

Due to its position at the bottom of the boat, the cabin sole is exposed to damage from two sources.

First, there is the damage from above – wear and tear from walking, gear being dropped or water spilling on top of the cabin sole. But the most common source of damage is from below.

Since the bilge sits just below the cabin sole, water in the bilge can cause the cabin sole to accumulate moisture and rot over time. That’s why it’s so important to try to keep your bilges dry as often as possible and to regularly check your cabin sole for rot or other water damage.

How to Fix Damage to Your Cabin Sole

So what to do when your cabin sole is showing signs of wear and tear? The remedy to repair the damage depends entirely upon how extensive the problem is.

Sometimes the surface of the cabin sole starts to fade over time. When this happens, it’s often possible to simply apply teak oil to the faded areas, which can restore minor faded areas back to their original shine.

If your cabin sole is made with veneer and it’s beginning to peel off, then it will take a little more work to get it back in top shape.

First, peel off the veneer on the damaged areas and check the plywood to confirm that there is no rot or moisture in the wood below. If the plywood is totally intact, you may choose to simply replace the veneer with a new layer. When the plywood is damaged, it’s time to think about replacing the entire cabin sole.

With hardwood cabin soles, it’s unlikely that you will need to make extensive repairs unless it has been exposed to a large amount of water for a long period of time.

Sometimes the wood may develop black spots which can be removed by sanding until the discolored area is removed and re-varnishing the exposed wood. If there are small areas with rot, you can cut out the damaged wood and a small portion of the surrounding wood and replace it with new hardwood.

For fiberglass soles, it may be possible to repair small sections by cutting out the damaged areas and applying layers of new fiberglass and epoxy over the damaged section.

How to Replace Your Cabin Sole

If the damage to the cabin sole is extensive, it’s possible that you may have to replace the entire sole with new material. This can be quite a daunting task, especially on larger vessels, so it’s recommended to hire a professional shipwright to get it done right if you aren’t experienced with boatbuilding.

The challenge with replacing the cabin sole is cutting the wood to fit all the curves and irregular surfaces on a boat. If you decide to do it yourself, here are the steps to replacing your cabin sole:

  • Completely remove the old cabin sole from the boat. As you do this, try not to damage the hull or any structure that supports the integrity of the boat. If you can, keep the old cabin sole as intact as possible to use as a template for the new sole.
  • Make sure that all of the stringers or frames that support the sole are intact. The new sole will depend on them to be able to support any serious weight.
  • Select and purchase the material that you will use to build the new sole. Make sure that it’s compatible with a marine environment, and confirm that you have enough material for the build.
  • Cut the new sole to fit the floor of your cabin. The easiest way to do this is to use the old sole as a pattern.
  • Fit the new sole in place and make sure that it fits perfectly. Make adjustments as necessary to get the ideal shape.
  • Secure the new flooring to the supports underneath. Most boaters will screw the sole in place, using wooden bungs to cover up the screws.
  • If the material is not pre-finished, sand and varnish the sole until it has the desired appearance you want for your boat.

Cabin Sole Maintenance to Avoid Future Issues

In order to avoid having to replace your cabin sole or make regular repairs, there are some simple steps you can take to keep your cabin sole in good condition. Below are some easy things you can do to maintain a beautiful and functional cabin sole.

  • Keep the bilge dry! The number one source of water damage and rot in a cabin sole is water from the bilge. Install an automatic bilge pump, and sponge up any remaining water to keep the bilge and cabin sole dry at all times.
  • Try to minimize the amount of humidity inside the cabin by providing adequate ventilation (and heat, if you keep your boat in a wet and cold climate).
  • Do everything you can to prevent water from entering the cabin via an open hatch, window, vent, or the companionway. If water does find its way below and ends up on the cabin sole, mop it up as soon as possible.
  • Check the cabin sole (both above and below, if you have an access port to the bilge) for moisture at least two or three times per week. If you find water, follow it to the source and eliminate the cause of the leak, like the marine toilet leak.
  • Cover areas with heavy foot traffic with a non-slip rug or carpet to avoid excessive wear and tear to the surface of the cabin sole. Make sure that the rug is secure, so that it won’t cause your crew to slip and fall.
  • Secure any heavy gear that could fall onto the cabin sole in heavy seas to prevent damage to your floors.
  • Wipe down the entire surface of the cabin sole with teak oil at least once per month and clean it regularly with wood soap to maintain the shine.

With proper care and maintenance, you can expect your cabin sole to last for a long time.

Of the different types of material used to build cabin soles, plywood with veneer is most prone to water damage.

For those who can afford it, a hardwood sole that is properly installed and maintained can be in great shape for many decades!

No matter what type of cabin sole you have in your boat, the most important thing is to keep it dry!

If you can avoid water damage and keep the sole from getting broken by loose objects in the cabin, chances are you will have a beautiful and functional cabin floor for years to come.

Varnishing the Cabin Sole

My boat is 10 years old, and while I work pretty much constantly on the outside teak, I had done nothing to the cabin sole, and it was beginning to show. Something had to be done, but how? While living aboard with Paddy, my hairy boat cat, work would surely be impossible. As I planned the job, I was suspicious that it was not going to be a small project. Just goes to show you how understated my thinking can be.

PLANNING & PREP I decided to take advantage of a time when my Island Packet 380, MoDachaidh, would be in a Hilton Head marina while my husband, Paddy and I would be staying in a nearby condo. That we would not be onboard was essential.

Having picked the time, I started researching methods to remove 10-year-old Z-Spar V-975 Satin Sheen Varnish. The helpful folks at Island Packet suggested I use a power sander to remove the finish from the teak and holly veneer, as a heat gun might lift the veneer itself. I bought several thin plastic drop cloths and used blue painters’ masking tape to protect the settees and all the nooks and crannies from dust. Unfortunately, because it is chilly in Hilton Head in the winter, the heater on the boat managed to evenly distribute a substantial coating of fine varnish dust over pretty much everything.

The removal of approximately 75 square feet of varnish took the better part of three days (16 hours). I used 80 grit, then 120 grit sandpaper, mostly with an electric hand sander, and finally by hand in tight spots. And of course, since I am here to tell the tale, I wore a mask.

CHOOSING THE VARNISH When I finished the sanding, I rewarded myself by choosing the coating. I’d considered the pros and cons, but secretly, I knew I wanted it to be bright and shiny; no more of this subtle, satin sheen. I wanted some flash for all my hard work.

While I had considered polyurethane, the more expensive two-part Bristol Finish and several brands of traditional varnish, I ultimately chose West Marine’s Five Star Premium Varnish (manufactured by Epifanes) because it was tried and true. Jamestown Distributors’ website (www.jamestowndistributors.com) was very helpful, telling me that particularly with real, old-fashioned gloss varnish, I must remove all dust from the area. Having lived aboard for most of the past decade, I thought I knew my boat, but I found dust in places I didn’t know existed! I removed the draping and tape and did the best I could for the better part of two days, but while I was removing the dust, the blower on the furnace was redistributing it.

TECHNIQUE Technique is very important. While I have used Sikkens Cetol on my exterior teak for years, the cabin sole is not in the sun, nor is the application outside. Plus, I was using a different material, so the whole business was new to me. Jamestown Distributors’ website walked me through the process in detail. They told me to thin the first coat 50% so that the varnish seeps into the wood and gives both a mechanically secure and chemically-sealed basis to which the additional coats can grab (I used Epifanes Thinner).

Since I had vacuumed, wiped and “de-dusted” to the best of my ability, I was no longer going to be able to machine sand between coats. It might have been too aggressive anyhow—the bottom line to fine and durable varnish work is how thick the coating is in the end, so you want to take off as little as possible while still smoothing and refining the surface.

The next three coats (2-4) are “sealer coats” and need to be thinned progressively less, with the fourth coat just 5% thinner. After that, the rest of the coats are applied full strength. Always use a paper paint strainer aimed into a clean, disposable container—never dip your brush directly into the can. The first four coats should be sanded with 220 grit sandpaper (on a sanding block), which takes the wood’s grain out of the surface while leaving successive coats enough “tooth” to hang onto. After each sanding, a thorough wipe with a tack rag is essential to remove all varnish dust from the surface. A damp rag does not work, as it forms an awful paste that needs to be re-sanded.

BRUSHWORK I chose a good China bristle brush that was two inches across with a beveled tip so I could get into tight places. It cost only $14, but it was a much better choice than a foam or synthetic brush and, more importantly, it was clean! One evening while watching television, I flicked particles of dust and debris from its bristles for over an hour; clearly, this brush did very little to mar the surface of my varnish.

It is best to work consistently with a well-loaded brush so the varnish flows out—you don’t want a thin coat. Work toward the wet edge to avoid brush marks. Practice makes perfect, so you have time to perfect your style while sanding out imperfections between the first few coats.

The next few coats (and the sanding between) are the ones that give that elegant glossy smoothness. Every other day, I would come to the boat and sand, then wipe with my tack rag, then put on a coat of varnish. Each coat took between four and five hours to complete. Here, we are making tradeoffs between beauty and utility. The more you sand (now using 320 grit), the smoother the surface gets, resulting in a more perfect finish; however, the surface also gets thinner, resulting in less durability. I opted for a middle ground—nine total coats with moderate sanding in between.

Keith, I used 3/8" marine plywood with lonseal teak&holly with good success. I don't know as yet how well it will hold up over the long term but i've had it in place about 3 years it doesn't show any real wear as yet. I coated the underside of the plywood with epoxy and the great thing about the product is that you don't have to worry about getting it wet! which is not hard to do on a boat! if you have your old panels as templates it should be a pretty simple operation. just make sure you use the glue provided and it should look great. I will say that i could have purchase some teak and holly plywood for less though. fair winds

Keith I was thinking of doing that this year. Let me pick you bain on two items.

How did you cut the Lion seal, I would asume that you matched your sole pattern lines . A friend of mine just a catalina 42 and had all new soles made and this winter he is having the Lion Seal instaledl by a flooring company. I like winter projects so I will be doing this myself so how did you cut it amde make edges, and how did you glue it down Vac seal???

howdy, laying out the loinseal to match is fairly easy if you can layout your plywood panels so they match the way they are going to be when they are installed. as far as cutting the panels is cut the material with a razor and made it so it was a bit oversized, glued the panel in place then used a router with a round over bearing bit to finish the job. I used the glue that the mfg. recommended although i believe you can use epoxy as well. certainly if you have access to a vacuum it would insure a better glue up. Good Luck!

I plan to replace the cabin sole with 6mm teak holly plywood. I have attached the web page were I will purchase the plywood. I will coat the underside of the plywood with and epoxy to seal against moisture. To cut the plywood I will use the old cabin sole as a template and cut the new material with a router. Just curious why the LionSeal is glued down rather than screwed down like the plywood panels. Seems like that would make it permanent or at least extremly hard to remove if needed in the future.

Keith, speaking as a carpenter (retired), I can tell you that with the right bit using a router is not that difficult. Why don't you get yourself a decent one, do a couple of practice runs on some 1/4" or 3/8" plywood, and then go for it? With the right bit, the worst you can do is stray away from the pattern, meaning that you won't mess up the piece you're working on, assuming you've clamped your pattern down properly. Just be sure to push your router into the direction it turns, not with it, so it doesn't get away from you. Get your router and bit at a decent hardware store, and you'll probably find a knowledgeable salesperson to help you.

You'll end up saving a bit of money AND have yourself a new toy to play with.

[COLOR="Red"]I did not use Loin Seal or a Laminite because I could not figure out how I was going to SECURE the sole to the pan.[/COLOR] I really did not want to drill hole into the laminate, and on the other hand I did not want to fasten it with any type of glue or epoxy , or silcone to the pan. I figured it would be a bear to get out.

So I went with Teak and Holly, Here is my story

I have Pictures of cutting the teak and holly sole.

I used my old sole for patterns. I placed the old ones on top on new teak and holly (to me)lined up the holly and left 3/16" extra when I cut it.

I next got a pattern following router bit. If you do this do your self a favor and spend the money on a good bit with a large bushing. I bought one from Lowes for $19.00, believe me it cut like a $19.00 bit.

I THEN WENT TO A pOWER TOOL STORE THAT SELLS CABINETERY TOOLS AND SPENT $58.00 on a good bit, it made all the difference, besides even though the teak is only 1/8" thick and 1/4"lywood the teak will eat up the bit, meaning dull it out bby the time the job is done.

I then got a bull nose bit to round out the backside so it fits into the pan.

I next expoxied all the edges and backside, I was going to use West System but, I tried the MAS EXPOXY Meduim Vicosity, it is really easier to use, not so critical on the mixture it is a 2 tp 1 ratio. The best part unlike West System you don't have to sand between coat it does not release the wax like WEST does, so two coats of that.

For the finish I used 1 gallon and a 1 quart of 2015 Pettit Flagship Varnish and a quart of 120 Pettit brushing thinner.

Word to the wise (well helpful hint that I got from a cabinet guy) my first coat was 50-50 they say to do this because it will soak into the wood and bonds better and then 10% thinner to the amount of varnish you pour out every time to work with, all in all I have eight coats on the sole.

I sanded everything with 120 grit and then 220, and finally 400 grit

I did this using vinyl over 1/4" marine plywood. When you lay the vinyl next to the pieces over the bilge pieces, which I did not replace, you can't tell the difference. I can tell you that it is very difficult (at least for me) to line up the holly lines on the pieces running from the V berth aft.

I thought I had marks to align everything, but I came out one half a holy line off at the entrance way steps and the piece that goes into the V berth is another story. I had it all lined up on my deck (at home) thinking I had them all aligned but the "V" berth section hooks to port and my holly lines go straight ahead.

Thankfully throw rugs cover the section between the panels so unless I tell people they wont know, but it was frustrating considering the project cost, in total, about $700. However, the overall look is good and I wont have to worry about delamination, which hapened to me twice even though I sealed the bottoms and all the edges of the prior pieces (and the piece I replaced previously at a cost of $300).

One thing I forgot to mention.... I didn't like the screws that hold the panels in place so I put velcro tabs under each corner and this seems to work in holding everything in place, plus it allows for easy cleaning.

Protection and nonskid options to choose from..

Im in the process of installing new teak and holly veneer in the interior of my boat. I have the old floor out and have the new plywood/veneer cut. I am ready to varnish/seal the new veneer, but I am in gridlock as to how to go about it.

Im using West System 105 Epoxy Resin on the bottom and edges, but Im not sure what to use for the top side to make it look like showroom new. Im looking for a varnish recommendation for a nice quality finish.

The challenge with finishing a veneer-and-plywood sole is finding a product that offers long-lasting protection for the wood and gives a secure footing when the cabin sole is wet. Varnishes suitable for protection and durability do not have intrinsically good nonskid characteristics.

Faced with this dilemma, we recommend using a satin-finish, one-part polyurethane varnish to protect the thin veneer and plywood, and adding some nonskid aggregate to the final coats to reduce the slippery-when-wet effect. If you don’t want to use the aggregate on the whole sole, at least add it in when finishing the areas at the base of the companionway and outside the head, where a sole is most likely to get wet.

For brush-on applications, PSeditors have had good luck with Interluxs polyurethane Goldspar Satin, Pettits ZSpar Captains 2067 (clear) or 1015 (amber), and Epifanes High Gloss. The products also have scored well in our past tests for weathering outdoors, so they should have an even longer life in a cabin.

Wood-finish makers echoed our recommendations, and advised that if you opt to go with a high-gloss varnish like the Epifanes or Interluxs Schooner, be sure to use a flattening agent with it, or, in the case of Epifanes, replace the two final coats with the companys Rubbed Effect Interior Varnish. Having a satin or matte finish helps to minimize slipping.

According to Interlux, Cetol products can be used on soles, but in our opinion, the relatively soft coatings will not offer enough protection for veneer, and given the amount of traffic a cabin sole sees, they would not wear well.

For aggregate options, you have a few choices. We recommend using salt or crushed walnut shell powder with varnish, rather than the canned aggregate sold by marine paint makers and often used with deck paints. Others prefer pumice or finely ground sand. Both the walnut shell and salt methods are easy to touch up and re-apply.

You can find ground walnut shell powder at larger boat yards, paint supply companies, and Harbor Freight. To use it: After building up a uniform series of base coats (usually six to eight coats, with the first ones thinned some) and letting it cure, place strips of -inch masking tape over the centerline of the -inch holly strips, and then mix the powder in the final coat of varnish. This results in nonskid stripes that are near in color to the teak, with enough of the sole left glossy to add a warm feel to the cabin. If you plan to add this or any other nonskid material to a finish, be sure to run it by the varnish companys technical crew before applying it.

Adding salt to a varnish finish is a little different. First, build up a good protective base, and allow it to cure completely. Then, mask off the areas to be made nonskid, and lay on a heavy coat of the same finish. Heavily sprinkle it with coarse salt; we use a grinder held 2 to 3 feet above the surface. Start with a light coat, moving back and forth until a uniform coating is obtained. Once the coating dries, rinse away the salt crystals with fresh water. Because its water-soluble, the salt disappears, leaving a surface stippled with tiny indentation where the crystals once were. This offers traction without taking away from the finish.

Since you have the luxury of applying the finish with the sole out of the boat this time, take the opportunity to build up a very good base for protection. The more coats you put on, the better the protection. Also, do a few test patches on scrap veneer with salt and with walnut powder to see which you prefer aesthetically.

Cabin soles are a challenge to re-do. Do a maintenance coat once every year or two to get longer life out of the finish and hopefully avoid a full takedown for many years.

Sole Mate – Vinyl Overlay in Cabin Sole

A recycled plastic vinyl overlay brings new life to a worn-out cabin sole.

A fter 45 years, the teak-and-holly cabin sole of Captiva , my 1970 Morgan 33, was not looking so great. I couldn’t imagine that refinishing the sole was going to give me the like-new look I wanted, and for a while I considered replacing the sole with new teak-and-holly plywood laminate. Then I learned that for the same price I could install Plasteak vinyl flooring. Reasoning the Plasteak would be easier to clean and maintain, that’s what I went with.

The material—which is made from recycled plastic—has a satin finish and promises good resistance to water damage while always looking fresh. The manufacturer sells 6-foot-wide sheets by the linear foot. I purchased 8 linear feet to ensure that the three cabin sole levels would have a grain pattern running in a common direction. The cost, at $50/linear foot, came to $400.

My Morgan 33 has three separate cabin sole sections, and all three have canted floor portions. I did not want any open-joint interfaces that could encourage abrasion or water intrusion, so after testing the idea I determined I could score the vinyl backing with a mat knife and achieve a perfect unbroken angle bend on the exposed surface.

I made full-size, craft-paper patterns of each of the three areas and test fit the paper patterns on the sole. I then laid the paper patterns on the vinyl stock and used a mat knife and metal rule to cut each piece. I traced the cant score on the underside of the forward cabin piece, the dining piece, and the main sole piece. The main sole section also had a rectangular area for the lift-out bilge access panel.

After cleaning the original sole with heavy-duty soap, rinsing with water, and allowing it to dry, I sanded every square inch to scuff the surface. Next, I applied blue painter’s tape on the vertical surfaces at the floor edges to protect them from the adhesive I planned to use to glue down the floor. I mixed two-part Lonseal epoxy adhesive and spread it evenly on the floor surfaces, one section at a time. With assistance, I carefully placed each cut vinyl piece and used a pressure hand roller to insure good adhesive bonding and no bubbles.

I faced the lift-out bilge access panel (3⁄4-inch-thick marine plywood) the same way and then used tan plastic T trim to finish the edges.

Because the 1970 Morgan does not have a molded fiberglass floor section, I did not want the cut vinyl to simply butt against vertical surfaces. To finish these intersections, I purchased solid teak battens (3/8 x 1 1/2-inch ) and ripped the lengths in half to 3/8 x 5/8 inches. I custom cut each piece to fit in place as baseboard trim, covering the entire perimeter of the cabin sole. I secured the trim using flat-head brass screws.

I finished this installation three years ago, and the cabin sole looks as good today as the day it was installed.

Replacing a Small Boat Cabin Sole

The amount of wood used in a production fiberglass boat is significant; it is used for many things such as stringers, bulkheads, floors, and backers. Higher quality production boats often use marine grade plywood for these applications but it can still be damaged by long-term exposure to water.

My personal boat, Funktional , is a 1986 Formula 242 LS that had a cabin sole that became waterlogged and lost its stiffness. A limber hole that became plugged over 25 years ago finally resulted in an uneasy feeling when standing inside the cabin. When I purchased the boat 10 years ago the sponginess was barely noticeable, but after several more seasons the flexing became obvious. When my 24-pound dog jumped from the vee berth and the cabin sole deflected, it was clear the plywood had deteriorated. I decided that it needed to be repaired and took advantage of the Michigan winter to tackle the project.

The first step was to disassemble the furniture in the cabin so that the carpet could be easily removed. It is important to realize that the closet and wet bar cabinets were installed in the boat before the deck was set in place and after the carpet was installed. This means these cabinets cannot be removed. I was able to loosen these assemblies enough to pull out the carpet from underneath the cabinetry.

With the carpet removed the actual cabin sole could be cut out. It was bonded in place with a layer of chopped strand mat that was applied over the top of the floor and up onto the hull bottom and stringers. A rotary cut off tool with an abrasive disc was used to cut off the tabbing, by keeping the guard close to the surface the amount of dust was minimized. I took care to ensure I was cutting into this chopped mat tabbing and not the hull; on some boats it may not be obvious and running the cut off tool into the hull bottom would create a lot of damage to repair.

To help locate the position of the new sole, a small lip of the chopped mat tabbing was left on the hull bottom and stringers.

After the fiberglass was cut around the floor and I could remove the plywood from the cabin it became clear why it was spongy. Not only was it waterlogged, it had a crack in it. The manufacturing defect that I mentioned earlier was also visible; a limber hole had been clogged with flotation foam. When the boat is on the trailer water can flow forward and this water did not have a good way to completely escape back to the bilge pump.

The fiberglass will hold the plywood in place and seal any gaps between the sole and the hull.

A small frame supported the aft section of the floor which was also soft and would be replaced with the new sole, but the cleats that supported the companionway step were in great shape other than the screw holes for the step were stripped. I swabbed these holes with epoxy to give the screws something to bite into.

The original floor was ½” marine grade plywood, and considering the age of the boat and the amount of moisture it was exposed to it performed well for over 25 years. It was about 2′ wide and about 4′ long.

I did not have any ½” marine plywood and did not want to invest in a large sheet to only cut off 2 feet. This application is not critical to the strength of the hull, and now that the limber hole was unplugged it will stay much drier.

I had an old sheet of ¾” AC exterior plywood and decided that by filling in the exposed knots, applying a light layer of WEST SYSTEM 4 oz. fiberglass on each side and thoroughly sealing the end grain around the perimeter it would be durable enough for this application. In addition, by shortening the length 2 inches I was able to orient the grain across the panel which will have increased strength because originally the grain ran lengthwise.

Please keep in mind that marine plywood is superior for boat building and for certain structures would be considered required.

The new sole was set in place using the outline of the old tabbing as a guide. A perfect fit was not needed because the new fiberglass tabbing bridged a small gap and the carpet covers the entire area. The sole rests on the hull bottom and the tabbing holds it down in place so there was no need to bond the plywood side to the hull bottom. Weights were placed on the sole to hold firmly against the hull while the tabbing cured.

The surfaces that the fiberglass would be bonded to were sanded by hand with 80-grit sandpaper, once again to keep dust to a minimum. I used WEST SYSTEM 737 fabric, the first piece I placed down was 4″ wide and then the second piece was 6″ wide. The biaxial fabric easily conformed to the needed shape and the differing widths reduced the chance of the edge being felt underneath the carpet.

All of this work was done in a garage in Michigan in March. To ensure that the cold weather would not inhibit epoxy cure, I prepared the sole in my heated basement and used a small electric heater to warm the cabin when using the epoxy to tab in the sole. WEST SYSTEM 105 Resin with 205 Fast Hardener was the best choice for use in cool weather. Other advantages of using WEST SYSTEM Epoxy include low odor, excellent adhesion to the wood and existing hull laminate, and superior water resistance.

After the epoxy had cured I wiped it down with water to remove any amine blush that may prevent the carpet adhesive from adhering and sanded any fiberglass strands that were poking up.

I found a plush marine carpet from Cabela’s and purchased outdoor carpet adhesive from my local big box store. The installation of the carpet was most difficult part of the project. The new carpet could not be installed underneath the cabinet and wet bar so I had to closely trim the carpet with razor blades and a pair Swiss Army knife scissors. Seam sealer was used to prevent it from fraying.

When I started the project I was most worried about spilling epoxy inside the boat. By using lots of plastic sheeting I am happy to say not a drop got onto any upholstery or gelcoat. Unfortunately, the carpet installation did not go as well. The carpet has to fit around several corners and there was really nowhere to stand as I put it in place onto the sole so things got a little messy. It all worked out in the end, I am sure many people are more intimidated by the fiberglass portion of this repair but I found the carpet was actually the biggest challenge.

The repair has made the cabin feel much more secure when stepping down from the cockpit, and new carpet really makes a very comfortable berth for the crew.

AMADEUS is a fast cruising sailing yacht built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard and totally refit in 2004, she was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design that enables her to comfortably reach top speeds of 12 knots and ensures excellent sailing performance.

This sailing yacht's generous uncluttered teak deck with a foredeck pool, offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables, a bar and barbeque, a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and a formal dining area with seating for up to 12 guests.

Accomodation is offered for up to 12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: the bow master cabin on AMADEUS features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite bath includes a shower and separate large bath. Two double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two twin cabins situated aft. All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment. Crew of 5 in separate quarters.

A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

On board Superyacht AMADEUS She has The Following Guest Accommodation Format:

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.

What Varnish for Cabin Sole?

I realize that for exterior brightwork you need marine spar varnish to protect the wood from UV rays, but for the cabin sole it seems to me you don’t need that. So is any standard polyurethane varnish okay? If so, is It okay to used the water based variety? Thanks.

Yes all varnishes are “Ok”. And Yes water based varnish is OK. it is easier to clean up, easier ( less stinky - less VOC’s) to apply. That does not mean these will maintain the color you want or last for a long time before having to repeatedly apply. Then there is is the issue of slickness when wet. Compare the products. And find one you like. I’ve become a Total Boat varnish user. Easy to work with. Nice results. Quick to dry, able to add up to 3 coats with no sanding. But. It is a varnish I find I need to maintain and touch up each season it I want to have that look all over.

I want to reiterate the importance of what John said above: Please consider how slippery the finish is when wet. I went with something (can't remember) that was pretty slippery, so on coat #4 I sprinkled salt on the boards while the finish was wet. Once dry, I removed the salt using a progression of fairly wet rags. (The soles were epoxied prior to varnishing, so water was not an issue). The resulting voids give traction. Some people use sugar, as the particles are bigger, but that would attract ants if you were not vigilant at the removal stage.

Please do NOT varnish your cabin sole witjhout some sort of non skid on it. it's dangerous I was single hand offshore with freshly varnished soles. l popped below to check a chart,, had wet feet and did a backplant ont the sole. My head missed the steps by about an inch. Barely missed knockinjg myself out, or worse. When I got back ashore, I sanded and added a coat with grit in it By the way-- model railroad ballast sand works very well

I would think a light coat of UV varnish would keep the wood grain somewhat elevated while offering non-skid protection. That said, I use thin floor matts over the sole. Make the varnish last a long time.

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

Built in 2015, Lady Lara is designed for exquisite indoor/outdoor living and boasts voluminous interior and exterior spaces across several decks: ideal for bronzing, lounging or entertaining. Guest Accommodation

Lady Lara offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 8 suites. The master suite incorporates its own study and dressing room as well as a his and her bathroom. There are up to twenty-seven crew members on board to provide outstanding service on your charter.

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles from her 220,000 litre fuel tanks at cruising speed. She has accommodations for 18 guests and 19 crew members on board. The VIP suites have fold-down balconies that add to the grandeur.

The onboard atmosphere is bright and inviting with subtle finishes. The entertainment areas are open to provide more sheltered and intimate formal spaces.

The yacht has an extensive health and beauty center with a spa and an expansive beach club.

The beach club creates the perfect area for guests to enjoy indoor/outdoor living. There is also a swimming platform where guests can leap into the water below.

She has an on-deck jacuzzi to soak up the bubbles and the views. The yacht also has an elevator for convenient access to her different decks and a comprehensive gym onboard. The tender garage is brimming with towable toys and tenders.

Reymond Langton Design also contributed to the exterior design of the LADY LARA yacht. She was built by Lürssen and delivered from their Rendsburg shipyard in 2015. The exterior has sweeping curves and elegant but masculine features.

LADY LARA was code-named project Orchid when she was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in 2015 and later renamed. She has a full displacement hull which gives her exceptional speeds in the water.

She has a white aluminum superstructure and teak decks throughout. The exterior is accented by underwater lights, which illuminate her at the night.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

She features an advanced stabilization system that provides guests with the best comfort levels on board by minimizing the rolling motion of the vessel. The $180 million yacht has a $14 – $15 million annual running cost.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Hanse Yachts introduces E-Motion Rudder Drive – an interesting propulsion type, with a special folding propeller….

An electric engine and a folding propeller have been installed into the rudder shaft, replacing the combination of diesel engine and sail drive. As a result, the propeller thrust is in line with the rudder position. This enables turning in the smallest circles or rotating around your own keel; it could be a perfect solution for maneuvering in narrow ports.

Making 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Hanse 315 equipped with four lithium-ion batteries has a range of up to to 30 nautical miles – enough for all European inland waters and many coastal waters. At lower speeds, the range is significantly increased. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.

The quiet Rudder Drive is also lightweight: 100 kg less than the diesel saildrive option. The Rudder Drive does not require a hole through the hull, lowering the resistance while sailing. The electric drive’s simplicity means less maintenance, as well.

For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.

What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.

This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.

In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.

The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.

At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.

Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.

There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing

Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.

At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.

Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.

Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.

Lifestyle choices

Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.

A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.

Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.

Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

The core of this innovative concept is the proven and specially adapted Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, designed in to the rudder blade itself. The streamlined system replaces the combustion inboard or saildrive and removes the need for a separate thruster on the new sailing yacht Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive, which debuts at the end of October.

Due to the unique rudder placement of the 4 kW (8 horsepower equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, the motor can apply efficient, directional thrust. The Jefa rudder blade’s range of motion was extended to a total of 100 degrees. Demanding maneuvers can now be accomplished without a separate thruster. While motoring, the yacht can spin on its own axis – both forward and in reverse. While docking, the stern can easily be maneuvered into the proper position. This is highly useful in windy conditions or in narrow slips.

Nominee Spotlight: Hanse 510

The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.

As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.

According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.

The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.

“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.” 

The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.

The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.

Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space. 

The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.

Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.

At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.

The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.

And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.

“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.

Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.

“EQT Ventures has steadfastly backed Candela's vision to accelerate the shift towards fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans since 2021. The launch of Candela's P-12 vessels signifies a watershed moment in sustainable transport", says Lars Jörnow, Partner at EQT Ventures.

The only question is: when will we see a P-12 ferry here in the US?

Candela’s electric ferries multiply as the startup lines up $25M in new funding

Electric boat maker Candela is approaching cruising speed with $25 million in new funding and the first commercial deployment of its new P-12 ferry in New Zealand. The company has global ambitions for its highly efficient boats and has completed and delivered dozens of them — which is a lot in this industry!

Candela has been slowly upping the size of its vessels for years, starting with the considerably smaller C-7 and C-8 (noting the length in meters) — of which, as of this week, they have now produced a total of 70. The P-12, a ferry design that can handle up to 30 passengers, made its debut late last year .

Just last week, the P-12 was given its first assignment: ferry people around New Zealand’s Lake Manapōuri , a scenic destination but also, more importantly, the site of the country’s largest hydroelectric power station. And now staff at that station can get to work via clean-running boat rather than driving, which the companies estimate will save around 240 tons of emissions per year. It’s a start, and it will help keep the lake clean and quiet.

International interest in these boats is also evident in the participation of Groupe Beneteau, a more than century-old boating company that makes thousands of vessels yearly, in the funding round. Groupe Beneteau CEO Bruno Thivoyon expressed in the press release that investing in Candela makes sense as part of the company’s “ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating.”

Many legacy boating companies are embracing electric engines and next-generation tech; I spoke with the head of another major manufacturer, Brunswick’s Dave Foulkes, at CES about it. He said that the collaborations are fruitful because the small, growing companies need the income and reach, while the larger ones need ready-to-deploy tech. Like any other industry, you have to know when to buy and when to build, and big boating companies are happy to buy — or invest.

Candela’s boats use hydrofoils with electric engines mounted on the bottom to effectively fly above the surface of the water once they get past a certain speed, vastly reducing energy consumption — historically and understandably a sticking point for electric boating. The approach does necessitate a powerful autopilot to keep it balanced, and despite their assurances, I wonder about how they’d handle log collisions, but overall the advantages seem to outweigh the drawbacks.

I drove one over the summer in Seattle (watching closely for logs, rather common in Elliott Bay) and wished they would replace the gas-chugging fast passenger ferries with P-12s. Candela isn’t the only one pursuing this market, either; Navier is also attempting to woo coastal communities with the draw of quiet, energy-efficient transit and is currently shuttling Stripe employees around the Bay Area . And while Zin Boats has been quiet for some time, they are also nailing down markets for the next version of their vessel.

The $25 million round was led, as mentioned, by Beneteau, with participation from EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB.
