I am first time boat buyer. I found a rawson 26 for $3000.00 CD. The lister doesn't have any pictures and the boat is fair distance away. Two questions what do people think of this craft? and does anyone know where I could find some pics before I make the journey?

Faster

The Rawson 26 is basically a fibreglass round-bilged masthead version T-Bird without many of the Bird's excellent features. I believe they actually have T-Bird keels. I don't think too many were built, and for some reason almost all of the ones I've seen have suffered some neglect. Is the one you are looking at in Squamish by any chance? PM me if so. Probably getting what you are paying for... (not much). Don't forget that the temptation to go for the "cheap" deal will result in something hard to sell in the future.

Here 's another one. Hes asking 4000obo. Dunno If it's the same one.

I have a Rawson 26. It is a 1966. As I understand there were 22 built, I have no. 17. It is a classic 60's fibergalss boat, its hand laid fiberglass and was built heck for stout. Its a little slow compared to everything else but I get a 245 handicap at my local races and I don't always finish last. I enjoy mine and wouldn't sell it

I bought the Rawson in Squamish... what were you going to tell the guy about it (a lot less than $4000 btw)

Hey all! So, I've been doing payments on what I was told a 28 footer, and apparently 1 of only 50 made. And so far I haven't been able to locate ANY distinguishable markings of any type. I'm planning on doing some further investigating on the next sunny morning. I'm not what you would call wealthy. Well actually, I wouldn't even say that the budget I'm working with is sustainable for most. However, I'm used to going hungry or without various essentials to be able to manage my projects. And For the last 3+ years I've only been able to dream of accomplishing my life's goals. Which, getting a sailboat and adventuring is on the top of he list. So I came a cross this deal through my buddy Alex. They wanted 4 grand for this "28footer" on a trailer. So I asked, "would you the payments?" Because there's no way in hell I'd realistically be able to afford it otherwise. And sailboats are hard to find in my neighborhood. And what's even more absurd is that I'd only seen the thing out at their farm twice in the entire time before it was delivered to my property a month and some change ago. So I said screw it, the worst can always happen. But maybe it won't happen to me? So I took the plunge and let the flow of the universe steer. So now I am just waiting for my poor friend to be finished going through a house full of his recently departed dads belongings to find the paperwork. So basically, in an effort to at least try and figure it out for myself I've been hitting the forums and posting the few pictures that I have on hand and readily available. Please let me know if you think you may have any useful information. Also, my apologies if this isn't the proper place for a post like this.

The galley looks like it is nicely done, to a reasonable standard - but it doesn't really look like a typical production boat galley (similarly the painted bulkheads), hence I am wondering if it was bought as a set of mouldings (this was very popular in the 70's and even the 80's) for completion by the owner? There might have originally been a Builder's identification plate on the transom (or the number might have been engraved - I presume that the hull is fibreglass?) but this has probably disappeared now. Does she have a spade rudder, or is it supported on a skeg? The large photo suggests that there is a skeg as well there, but I am not sure.

Looks like it might be a Rawson 26, made in the Seattle area in the 60's by Ron Rawson SailboatData.com - RAWSON 26 Sailboat https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/rawson-26

Ike

Ike Senior Member

If it was built after 1972 it should have a Hull Identification Number. It would be on the transom. Facing the boat from behind it would be in the upper right hand corner. A 12 digit number that looks like ABC12345A272 or the like. The first 3 digits are a manufacturers ID code, and the last four indicate when it was built. If it doesn't have one then it is likely it was built before 1972 or was a DIY project. If it was a DIY project they did a very good job. And it does look like a Rawson.
Yes, she does look very much like a Rawson 26 - thanks to PNW Sailor. Re a lack of a HIN - I have found occasionally on older boats here that these numbers have disappeared as a result of over enthusiastic filling and fairing prior to the hull being repainted, and this might be the case here if no number is visible in the top right corner of the transom.

Hi sorry for the late reply/bump but that most definitely looks like a Rawson 26. I have one that is estimated to have been built post 72 (I guess there is a hull number somewhere). It seems that most Rawson 26s have had their interior rebuilt. What I have heard is they only built 22 of these while the Rawson 30 was much more common. I can't attest to that but it is a rare boat with beautiful lines and quite nice sailing qualities. I don't think that there are that many left to be honest and it is always a pleasure to see another one .. And what a nice price! I paid 3500 CAD for mine (with a dinghy) in 2020 with a survey estimating value at 6000. May I inquire on her current state ?

Rawson 30

Designed by famous naval architect William Garden and built by Ron Rawson in Washington State and Canada, there were only 252 Rawson 30 sloops ever built between 1959 and 1985 The Rawson 30 fiberglass sailboat is known for its strength, and many have been circumnavigating in this boat for decades The integral full keel design and ballast ratio make this a very capable, safe and comfortable world cruiser. The roller furling jib and lazyjack mainsail folding system make the sails easy to control and put away The single cylinder 8HP diesel powerplant provides for very economical long distance passages. The custom hard dodger ads a lot of comfort to the cockpit by fending wind and spray away as well as keeping rain out of the companionway. This is the perfect low budget world cruising dreamer' boat. Length 26.0

Rawson 26 foot sailboat: One of only 22 ever built. Hand laid fiberglass. The design is similar to the T-birds of the same era. This boat is in excellent condition for its age and has been a great boat for the family, which has now grown too large for us to comfortably sail this boat; we will be looking for something bigger. We've had it across the San Juans numerous times. It's a very stable boat and sails well; I've had it out in 25 knot winds with 4-6 foot seas across the straight more than once. The hull and exterior are in great shape and with a little TLC on the inside this boat has a lot of potential. That said, this was purchased as a restoration project and though most of the work is completed there's still a little left to do. Added a two-burner alcohol stove New Electrical system, wiring, and cabin lights New battery charger New fresh-water tank, plumbing, pump sink, and external freshwater fill New portable head Replaced berth cushion foam (need new upholstery New laminate floor (water proof) New paint on the deck and in the cockpit. Old deck fittings patched/filled before painting Pop-top need some love, but is functional. Needs new paint on the inside, but the surface has been sanded / prepped where necessary for the most part. It wouldn't take much to restore this. Needs new bottom paint, but the hull is clean. http: sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=5765 Equipment: 4 sails, all in great shape: Original main sail and spinnaker; 160 genoa; working jib. 2 jib halyards 1 main halyards 1 spinnaker down/up haul 2 3-sheet rope clutch cleats for halyards (1 port, 1 starboard) 2 3-sheet guides (1 port, 1 starboard) 2 lewmar 18 winches on deck for halyards Everything has been rigged back to the cockpit for single-handed sailing 2 recently serviced and rechromed Lewmar 26 winches with standard cleats Spinnaker mast eye traveler on track at front of mast Mainsheet traveler and track Boom traveler and track 2 adjustable cockpit cup holders :-) New 2014 mercury 9.9 outboard motor and tank (still under manufacturer's 3-year warranty) not included - listed at $1500 OBO Asking $2,625 without the motor; additional $1,500 for the motor; will consider all offers.

3 people are dead, several missing after migrant boat runs into trouble off southeastern Spain

MADRID — A boat carrying a group of migrants ran into trouble off the coast of southeastern Spain killing at least three people and several others were believed missing, authorities said Friday.

Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service said in a statement that two survivors and three bodies were found on a partially sunken boat off the coast near the town of Motril. The two survivors said the boat had been carrying 12 people when it set sail from Algeria six days ago, leading authorities to suspect seven others may have fallen into the sea.

The two survivors and three bodies were taken by helicopter to the mainland.

Tens of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries fleeing poverty, conflict and instability in West Africa try to reach Spain each year in large open boats. Most go to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic , while others from Morocco , Algeria and Middle Eastern countries try to cross the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to mainland Spain. Several thousand die making the hazardous journey.

The Interior Ministry says 14, 405 migrants arrived in Spain by boat between Jan. 1 and Mar. 15, up from 3,528 in the same period last year. The vast majority arrived on the Canary Island route.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Sloop or Ketch. Originally the MIDSHIP 26. Later it became the PARKER-DAWSON 26. An inboard engine was available as an opion.
