Rolex Yacht Master 16622

The 1980s was a time of innovation at Rolex, with a refresh of everything in the Rolex catalog and putting a more modern and premium look to the entire line up. Gone are the days of Matte Painted dials, and hand-wound movements of the Daytona but in with the new Glossy dials, White Gold Indices and Sapphire Crystals, similar to the Rolex Line-Up you see today. The 1980s brought change aesthetically and internally to the entire catalog, but while Rolex was in development of the then new Submariner 16610, the iconic design you know today was a redesign of the original?

In the 1980s, Rolex wanted to significantly update and modernize the Rolex Submariner and give a more modern take of the outgoing Submariner 16800 of the late 70s-mid 80s. Rolex experimented with several designs, trying to give a more modern look while keeping the essence and design aspects of a submariner. They were adamant about keeping the submariner DNA for the new redesign and were scared that when unveiled, the design may not appeal to the fans of the brand and the submariner. We are of course talking about one of the most iconic and recognisable watches of all time. The thing was, they really liked the new design, since its more sleek and modern than the outgoing 16800. At the end of the day the Submariner 16610 you know and love came out and was an instant hit and the rest was history. But what happened to the prototype design? The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was born.

Rolex Yachtmaster 16622

In 1997, we saw the introduction of the Stainless steel Rolex Yacht Master 16622. The 16622 series came in two dial variations Blue and wait for it…..Platinum. You Read it right, they used a solid platinum dial and a platinum rotating bezel, unique only to the Yachtmaster Line. This was the first time Rolex has experimented with the mix of elements being steel and Platinum in a sports watch .

The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was also the first new release to use super luminova instead of tritium. The Rolesium Yacht Master was seen as a very unique watch that was somewhat oddball in the world of watches because of its combination of materials and its flashy looks featuring the polished centre link bracelet.

If you wanted a more elegant sports watch that looks good on formal occasions and also in the sports club, then the yacht master is the watch for you. The platinum dial glistens under the light and looks simply stunning together with the red contrast “Yacht Master” text and red seconds hand.

The Ladies 29mm and MidSize 35mm versions were also available and in my opinion, would be a stunning watch to pair with your significant other. One of the biggest drawbacks was the price, it was one of, if not the most expensive steel Rolex in the retail catalogue.

Rolex Yachtmaster 16622

The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was updated in 2013 with the 116622. It included updates such as the more modern Rolex easy link clasp, an updated dial with thinner fonts and a smoother glossy look as opposed to the more metallic look of the old dial. The addition of super luminova instead of the old luminova also make the dial look different. Changes were also made to the bracelet with the end-links fitting much more nicely into the lugs.

Recently we have seen many things happen in the watch market . Rolex Sports Models have had a meteoric rise in value, the hype around every sports model in the Rolex range and truly there insane prices for some pieces in the Submariner ,GMT, Explorer and especially Daytona lines.

In my opinion the Rolex Yacht Master 16622 is a lot of watch for the money. You get precious metals, flashy looks, stunning dial, reliable movement, beautiful finishing and modern looks for around 8,000 USD or 400k pesos. All less than a new submariner !

Rolex Yacht Master 16622

  • One of the cheapest and best value Rolex sports models out there, or less than a new Submariner or the Submariner of its time, the yacht master is a great deal, especially if you want your first expensive piece. For collectors, this would fit collections perfectly, being a unique and elegant addition to your collection and your daily rotation.
  • The Yachtmaster has become iconic and has appeared on the wrist on many stars such as Brad Pitt, Hulk Hogan and most notably Bruce Willis.
  • Great wearability.
  • It's a Scratch Magnet, especially with the giant polished center links.
  • It's heavy, it has a good heft but it gets bothersome at times, due to its sheer weight caused by the platinum dial and bezel.
  • The size, some may find it bug due to the big bezel and smooth case, it appears bigger on some than the Submariner of the time.

History of yacht master watches.

Taking about the Rolex watches, it is that one brand which has never stopped flabbergasting us. So with each new arrivals of its models, they have successfully amazed us. The same is applied to the Yacht Master. Let us begin with some history. The Rolex Yacht Master is a sports watch which was first introduced in 1992. Now, as you might be aware that Rolex very rarely introduces the all-new model, so the last Rolex model which was introduced before the Yacht Master was the model named Daytona which was released in 1964, thus we can see that the Rolex took about 28 years to introduce us with Rolex new model. So the Yacht Master began its journey with the model Yacht Master 16628 which is built in 18-carat yellow gold and has a white dial with the Rolex 3135 calibre movement and triplock crown. Its striking similarities with the Rolex Submariner were clear for all to see. And the only difference between the Submariner and the Yacht Master was that the Yacht Master was waterproof to 100m. Thus it was not aimed at divers but instead marketed as a racing watch. Later in 1994, the Rolex, for the first time issued a smaller professional size watch. It released two watches, one for the ladies which was the model Yacht Master 69628 and a mid-sized man's watch which was the model Yacht Master 68628. And in 1996, it added to the same collection by introducing the two-tone, that is, combined with the stainless steel and 18-carat yellow gold to the ladies and mid-size line. In 1997, the Rolex decided to gives the Yacht Master a stainless steel and platinum construction, so it released the Yacht Master in Rolesium. Rolesium is a term which was patented by Rolex in the early 1930s, and now it has become exclusively aligned to the Yacht Master model. Its bezel and dial are in platinum, while the case, band, and crown, of the watch, are in stainless steel. This model is also known as the Platinum Yacht Master and could be found on models Yacht Master 16622 (40mm men's), Yacht Master 168622 (35mm midsize), and Yacht Master 16922 (29mm ladies) watches. By the end of 1999, Rolex decided to discontinue the model two-tone Yacht Master 68623 and replaced it with the two-tone model Yacht Master 168623 in 2000. Now what distinguishes the two models is the upgraded movement in the 168623, and also it is built with the heavier 18-carat gold links, whereas the links in the 68623 were hollow. The last addition to the Yacht Master was the two-tone, steel and gold Rolex Yacht Master ‘Rolesor' 16623. This was made available with a variety of dials including the colors like blue, white, mother of pearl, champagne, brown and silver. Now the Rolex never really planned to deliver us a new set of the model when they started to work in the early 1990's, but sure the lovers of the Yacht Master will be forever thankful for the eventual result of what started out as a redesign of the Submariner. So it ultimately decided that the iconic Submariner was just unchallengeable to be updated with a new design, so they took a decision to launch the Rolex Yacht Master as a separate and more luxurious line instead. The list of the Rolex Yacht Master which were available at the time: 116622 - Men Rolex Yacht Master 40 mm Rolesium (Stainless Steel and Platinum) 116623 - Men Rolex Yacht Master 40 mm Rolesor (Stainless Steel and Gold) 168622 - Midsize Rolex Yacht Master 35 mm Rolesium (Stainless Steel and Platinum) 168623 - Midsize Rolex Yacht Master 35 mm Rolesor (Stainless Steel and Gold) 169622 - Ladies Rolex Yacht Master 29 mm Rolesium (Stainless Steel and Platinum) 169623 - Ladies Rolex Yacht Master 29 mm Rolesor (Stainless Steel and Gold) The common feature in all the Rolex Yacht Master is its bi-directional bezel. This is basically designed to measure the time progress between two points. They all come within an Oyster case and sit on the Rolex Oyster bracelet. Each of the Yacht Master has the blue Parachrom hairspring, which has been developed to be insensitive to the magnetic fields and is highly shock-resistant, which ensures the ongoing durability and accuracy of the timepiece. The 35mm and 29mm Rolex Yacht Masters feature the calibre 2235 movement whereas the 40mm versions of the Rolex Yacht Master feature the calibre 3135 movement. In 2012, Rolex also released an all-new version of the stainless steel and platinum Yacht Master 116622, which was built with a cobalt blue sunray dial and till this date it is considered as an instant piece of a classic! In 2015, Rolex introduced the Yacht Master Everose gold version, Yacht Master 116655 and the first 37mm Yacht Master 268655. The new Yacht Master 37 mm is listed under both Rolex men and Rolex women section on its official website.

Oyster Perpetual

Yacht-Master 42

An emblematic watch in rlx titanium.

The emblematic watch of the sailing world, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is now available in RLX titanium. More than a simple variation, the use of this new, robust and light material required the development of particular industrial techniques, allowing the metal to be manipulated with the utmost care. Advantages proven by Sir Ben Ainslie, renowned skipper and luminary of the SailGP, who tested a Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium exclusively created for him, enabling the development of the new version presented in 2023.

RLX titanium is a grade 5 alloy that is lighter than steel and denser than aluminium.

Mastering lightness

Titanium is a surprising metal. The titanium selected by Rolex to manufacture its watches is a grade 5 alloy named RLX titanium. It is both lighter than steel and denser than aluminium, yet harder and more resistant than either of these metals. Its characteristics are so unique that its processing and finishing – particularly the technical satin finish specially developed by Rolex and specific to watches in RLX titanium – required the development of a dedicated industrial process. Using RLX titanium to create the case and bracelet also reduces the weight of the watch by about one-third compared with the same watch in Oystersteel. A major watchmaking feat, marked by the distinctive symbol on the winding crown: a dash surrounded by two dots.

Unprecedented aesthetic balance

The new Yacht-Master 42 stands out with its finishes, a combination of technical satin, high-sheen and polished, proof of Rolex’s know-how in machining and finishing. The three finishes delight the eye with their subtle play on textures and light, contrasting the gleaming polished surface of the crown guard, the lustrous high-sheen on the top edges of the case lugs, and the matt of the technical satin finishing – with its pronounced grain – visible on the case and bracelet. An unprecedented aesthetic balance reinforced by the combination of the RLX titanium’s anthracite grey colour and the matt black colour of the Cerachrom bezel insert in ceramic.

Unparalleled comfort

The new Yacht-Master 42’s Oyster bracelet is also made of RLX titanium. Sporting a technical satin finish extending to the edge of its links and to the sides of the Oysterlock safety clasp’s cover, it is equipped with an Easylink comfort extension link that allows its length to be easily adjusted by about 5 mm. It also includes ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance its flexibility and longevity.

Tested against the elements

In 2021, Sir Ben Ainslie, a four-time Olympic sailing champion, was chosen to test a Yacht-Master 42 specially designed for him. This gentleman skipper competed in the SailGP championship with the only watch of its kind in the world: a Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium. By exposing its watches to extreme conditions, Rolex perpetuates the vision of its founder Hans Wilsdorf, who saw the world as a living laboratory in which only extreme testing could provide evidence of a watch’s reliability. A chronometer with superlative precision, made of a material used in high-technology industries, the watch proved to be the perfect ally for the driver of the Great Britain team. Ultralight, robust and extremely corrosion-resistant, it accompanies him on board without hindering any of his movements.

I love the diversity.

A breath of fresh air for sailing

It is a competition unlike any other in the world. With its multihulls travelling at more than 50 knots – almost 100 km/h – and comprising multiple events across the world, the SailGP series showcases the most innovative technologies in water sport. Rolex has been Presenting Partner and Official Timepiece of SailGP since the competition was inaugurated in 2019. A veritable ballet of the seas, SailGP is a spectacle like no other. Aboard their catamarans flying across the water, team members grapple with the elements, each playing a precise role.

Faced with the unexpected, they must band together to withstand stress and make instantaneous decisions. To sense the direction of the wind before the others and gain the best trajectory to win. Among these outstanding athletes is Rolex Testimonee Sir Ben Ainslie, who tested a Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium during races. With incomparable lightness, this watch offers unparalleled liberty of movement, as much on land as at sea. It allows the wearer to lead their life with a masterful hand, in the perpetual quest to balance speed and staying the course.
