The Wellington Yacht: Specs & Cost

The wellington yacht: what you need to know about the ‘below deck’ vessel.

On the fifth season of the hit TV show Below Deck Mediterranean , the luxury yacht featured was the biggest boat in the series’ history. 1 Captain Sandy Yawn and her crew sailed charter clients around the Spanish resort town of Mallorca in The Wellington yacht. In actuality, the 184.5-foot luxury yacht is called The Wellesley and was only called The Wellington on the show. Outside of the show, the M/Y The Wellesley is available for charter. Don’t worry, there won’t be any reality TV cameras on board! Our team at Yacht Management South Florida Inc. provide a look at this vessel, as well as many other insights on our yacht maintenance blog , to let our current and future clients have a better idea of what's going on in the industry.

M/Y THE WELLESLEY Details

Built in 1993 by Netherlands based custom yacht builder Oceanco, it went through a major yacht refit in 2016. Coming out to 184.5 feet or 56.2 meters in length, the superyacht has a cruising speed of 14 knots and can reach a maximum speed of 16 knots. Its exterior was designed by Gerhard Gilgenast and its elegant 1920s inspired interior was designed by Donald Starkey. Mahogany bedrooms, Italian linens, and painted portraits of Winston Churchill and Che Guevara smoking cigars are just a few of the details that bring in Jazz Age glamour to the vessel's interior.

"Obviously, they spared no expense when it comes to this. This owner really loves his cigars and his whiskey." – Captain Sandy Yawn 2

Below Deck Med super yacht Home

On the season premiere of Below Deck: Mediterranean Season 7, viewers are introduced to the crew that will be hosting the next few months of high seas drama on Bravo. It would be difficult to single out the sexiest new cast member this season, but it may just be the super-fine 50 meters of hybrid yacht hotness that is the M/Y Home!

The elegant Heesen superyacht was built in 2017 and was the Dutch shipbuilder’s first to be equipped with hybrid propulsion. “In this case ‘Hybrid’ means that the yacht can draw on two sources of power for propulsion: diesel mechanical and diesel electrical,” Heesen explains in their promotional brochure for Home . “Either or both sources can be used at the same time. This provides less noise and vibration, a more flexible power management which means better efficiency.”

Home measures 49.8 meters (163 feet, 4 inches) and has an overall beam of 9.1 meters (29 feet, 10 inches). It’s lightweight aluminum hull helps Home achieve a gross tonnage just under 500. Its max speed with a half load is 16.3 knots with diesel direct and 9 knots with diesel electric.

Moving on to the stats that are more relevant to casual Below Deck viewers, Home has accommodations for 9 crew members and 12 guests. There is a full-beam owner’s stateroom for Captain Sandy, one full-beam VIP guest suite, two double guest suites, and two twin guest suites.

Superyacht Home floor plan

I’m an avid Below Deck fan and I don’t feel like I ever have a very clear understanding of the layout on the boats featured on the various shows. To help myself (and other fans) during Below Deck Med Season 7, I’ve put together a map of the layout of M/Y Home that should help you imagine the 3D landscape in which all of the drama plays out.

I’ve color coded the different levels, starting with the sun deck (green) at the top and working down through the wheelhouse (pink), main deck (yellow) and lower deck (grey).

Below Deck Med Yacht HOME floor plan layout map

Here are individual images for the lower three levels arranged vertically for easier viewing on mobile devices:

Super yacht Home layout

You will notice that the crew resides in the lower deck at the front (bow) of the boat. There are four small cabins, four bathrooms, and eight twin bunk beds. The crew mess is right next to the cabins in the lower deck.

The captain’s quarters is located on the wheelhouse level and has a door that opens directly into the bridge.

The charter guest master suite is located on the main deck. I was surprised to see that the Home’s galley (kitchen) is right on the other side of the wall from the master suite bathroom.

One question I have after checking out the Home layout is where the engineer(s) sleeps? Also, I thought production takes a room to set up their equipment? The chef, three stews, and four deck crew members take up all eight crew bunks, right? If I figure out answers to these questions I will update this post for clarification.

For those of you wanting even more info about the Below Deck Med superyacht Home, here is the official promotional brochure followed by a series of videos of Home:

Yes, You Can Really Charter Below Deck Med ’s New Superyacht, Home

Renting or buying Season 7’s new vessel won’t come cheap though.

"Home", the new yacht from 'Below Deck: Mediterranean' is available to rent or buy.

When Captain Sandy Yawn and her all-new crew set sail on Below Deck Mediterranean Season 7, they’ll be in uncharted territory aboard a new superyacht, Home . While cruising the pristine waters of Malta, Captain Sandy was working for the first time on the 163-foot motor yacht, which Bravo described as a “complex hybrid vessel” that the Below Deck Med vet found to be “more unpredictable to navigate.” As the show’s Season 7 trailer previewed, Home won’t make it through the charters entirely unscathed either: In one clip, Captain Sandy laments that she hit something for the first time in her career, while another scene teases a potential “crashing” incident.

Rest assured that there weren’t any serious accidents because Home is currently available for charter in the Caribbean region at a cost ranging from $245,000 to $273,000 per week , depending on the season. Meanwhile, Home — the first diesel-electric motor yacht to appear on Below Deck — is also listed for sale with an asking price of just over $30.8 million. Per the listings, the superyacht, which Dutch shipyard Heesen built in 2017, sleeps up to 12 guests in six cabins and features contemporary, “Ibiza-style” decor. Among Home ’s many amenities are a large sun deck, jacuzzi, swim platform, air-conditioned gym, and sky lounge.

Home also sleeps up to 10 crew members. In Below Deck Med Season 7 , that includes Captain Sandy, returning Season 6 deckhand Mzi “Zee” Dempers, and newcomers: chief stew Natasha Webb, chef Dave White, bosun Raygan Tyler, stews Natalya Scudder and Kyle Viljoen, and deckhands Storm Smith and Jason Gaskell. Following her involvement in Hannah Ferrier’s mid-Season 5 firing, Malia White cited a scooter accident and pending exams — not fan backlash — as her reasons for not returning for Season 7. (“It’s not that I might never come back to the show,” Malia told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in May. “I’m just not on the next season.”)

Season 7’s “new boat with new department heads” might bring Captain Sandy some challenges during her “first time ever in Malta,” but she’s naturally ready to face them all head-on. The network also told viewers to expect “outrageous costumes, wild nights out, and some major inter-departmental drama,” which “doesn’t even cover what the charter guests are going to bring in the new season.”

As always, expect plenty of romance at sea, too. As Bravo’s first look teased, “boatmances” will be a major topic of conversation this season, including flirtations between Natalya and Storm, as well as several questions about the true nature of Natasha and Dave’s relationship. There could even be a fling between a crew member and a charter guest, too. Though Bravo is premiering the series on July 11, Peacock subscribers can access new Below Deck Med Season 7 episodes a week early beginning July 4.

Fans can also experience Home for themselves off-screen — but it will cost way more than their monthly cable bills.

northern sun below deck down under season 2

And it’s hard to imagine a better yacht than the Northern Sun motoryacht to explore this iconic area. The Northern Sun is a 50.8m (now yacht) that used to be a vessel dedicated for ice exploration. The refit work took two years but was clearly worth it when we look at the result displayed in this second season of the Australian Spin off.

Although the Northern Sun is built by the Japanese Narasaki shipyard, it surely is a boat that fits Australian waters quite well and could delight anyone looking to explore the most rugged locations in style, whether they are polar or tropical.

Northern Sun is available for charter from $161,700 / week . Her latest asking price was $15,000,000 .

Here's Your First Look at the New 'Below Deck Med' Yacht!

PUBLISHED May 5 2020, 12:37 a.m. ET

UPDATED Jun. 5 2020, 5:07 p.m. ET

Our favorite Bravo show, Below Deck Mediterranean , is back for Season 5! Once again, the maritime reality show is making big waves, this time because the show will be taking place aboard the biggest boat in the series’ history.

Captain Sandy , Chief Stewardess Hannah Ferrier and Season 2 alum Malia White are back for another wild charter season, this time sailing around the beach resort town of Mallorca, Spain.

Keep reading to learn more about the Wellington, “by far the biggest vessel [Sandy’s] ever run," which is currently docked on a Mallorca pier.

Check out The Wellington, 'Below Deck Mediterranean's newest yacht.

The Wellesley , which will be known as The Wellington on the beloved Bravo show , is a 184.5 ft luxury yacht built in 1993 that had a major refitting in 2016, which included a seven-meter extension.

The boat is a great option for large families or corporate charters, and includes numerous lounging areas, interior and exterior dining capabilities, as well as a number of amenities like an extensive collection of water toys, a jacuzzi, sauna, gym equipment, bar, and barbecue.

The main salon boasts wood and marble interiors designed by well-known interior stylists Donald Starkey and Dennis Irvine, with plush leather furnishings that give it a refined appearance. Captain Sandy said that she would do her “pre-charter meeting[s] and…[her] tip meeting[s]” there during the charter season.

The main deck even includes a cigar room!

Just when you thought you knew luxury, Below Deck goes and ups your standards. Right off the main salon, The Wellington also offers a wood-paneled cigar room which audiences have not yet seen on a Below Deck yacht before, complete with a cabinet of fine whiskeys and scotches.

"Obviously, they spared no expense when it comes to this," Sandy says. "This owner really loves his cigars and his whiskey.” With an entire wall cabinet dedicated to vintage cigars, choice whiskeys and crystal tumblers, guests can enjoy their cigars in the company of other famous cigar smokers like Winston Churchill and Che Guevara, whose portraits hang from the walls.

Past the salon is the master cabin, with refurbished mahogany bedrooms fitted with sheets by Italian luxury linen company, Pratesi, whose sheets go for around €2,000. That’s almost $2,200!

Even more impressive is the VIP suite, which has a panoramic glass windows that allow guests to enjoy the night sky as they sail the Mediterranean seas.

The Wellington’s exteriors are equally luxe.

The luxury continues as you step outside on to the Wellington’s main deck aft, of course. On the upper deck is a massive sunbathing area along with plush seating for guests to enjoy the view and unwind with drinks. The deck also features a waterfall-equipped jacuzzi and a grill where the yacht’s chef can prepare a table-side lunch.

So kewl! Explore "The Wellington" as seen in S5 of #BelowDeckMed https://t.co/BT12fTfNnz — Captain Sandy Yawn (@CaptSandyYawn) May 1, 2020

Toys aboard the Wellington include the high-speed jet skis, Seabobs, scuba diving equipment, inflatable toys, and of course, a water slide. In case any of the guests aren’t keen on the water, the boat also has a range of gym equipment to keep active and enjoy some ground-based exercises.

And if anyone doesn’t feel like water sports or gymming, this season’s crew will also include a professional massage therapist for those looking to get some soothing treatments.

Take a very cool 3D tour of the mind-blowing Wellington to see all the luxurious details up close. Catch new episodes of Below Deck Sailing on Monday at 8 p.m. ET with Season 5 of Below Deck Mediterranean premiering in Summer 2020.

How to charter a Below Deck superyacht

Want to know how much it would cost to charter one of the luxury superyachts featured on US hit TV series Below Deck ? We take a look inside Below Deck ’s famous superyachts that you can charter for yourself, and find out what they have to offer charter guests on board.

Northern Sun

The star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two, the 50.8-metre Northern Sun (originally delivered as Hokko Maru ) has lived a full and fascinating life. She was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. As a result, she has the hardy constitution of an explorer, transformed from ship to superyacht under the stewardship of her new owners.

Northern Sun’s main deck is now dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation.

Accommodation is for up to 12 guests across six cabins, with rich, warm interiors that feature natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). The ex-explorer also – naturally – has impressive stowing capacity. She's able to carry two Laser sailboats, scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, with the broker describing her as a "family-orientated" vessel.

Charter cost: Northern Sun is managed for charter by Ocean Independence with a weekly charter rate starting from $161,700.

‘Below Deck’ Sails Into a New Era

With a different captain at the helm and new production elements, the reality show about charter yachts is switching up its style.

A man in a crew member suit stands behind a bar and tends to flowers in a vase.

By Shivani Gonzalez

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

About Below Deck Mediterranean

Set amidst the mesmerizing Italian Riviera and the historic façade of Genoa, Italy, it's all hands on deck this season for Capt. Sandy and her team. From outrageous guests to after-hours antics, the boat gets rocked throughout each charter as the crew navigates complicated dynamics and unexpected rifts. In a franchise first, unprecedented staffing changes dominate the season, which tests each department as they struggle to find their sea legs through unforeseen turnover.        Sandy levels up from last season with the 180-foot M/Y Mustique, which challenges her deck crew as they attempt to navigate the busy industrial port with utmost precision. Before they even leave the dock, visa issues tie up two crew members while a department head mismanages important paperwork. Sandy leans on temporary help for the first charter and an unexpected shake-up results in a change of hierarchy. On deck, the crew is overwhelmed by their workload on the oversized vessel as the interior deals with a clash of personalities. Chef Jack wows the guests with his impressive take on local Italian fare, but things start to sour when communication goes south.        Between “friends with benefits” and open relationships, there’s no shortage of boat-mances and boat break-ups. When disagreements impact productivity and former friendships start to implode, Sandy is faced with a wave of difficult decisions.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .
