Understanding the World of Yacht Clubs in Cowes

Bill Michaels

The Origins of Yacht Clubs in Cowes

How cowes became a hub for yachting enthusiasts.

Cowes is recognized internationally as the home of British yachting. Situated on the Isle of Wight on the south coast of England, Cowes has been a center of yacht racing for over 200 years. It all began in the 19th century, when King George III first visited the Isle of Wight and fell in love with the area. He built a summer residence there, and that sparked interest in the area, with wealthy individuals building their own properties and racing their yachts in the Solent, the strait of water between the Isle of Wight and the mainland. The Royal Yacht Squadron was formed in Cowes in 1815, and this was followed by the formation of other yacht clubs in the area.

The Appeal of Yacht Clubs in Cowes

Yacht clubs in Cowes are not just about racing yachts. The clubs offer their members a host of social activities, training and coaching, and cruising. Yacht clubs are a wonderful way to meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for yachting. Membership to a yacht club is highly sought after, and the waiting lists for some of the clubs can be long. The clubs are open to anyone who owns a yacht, regardless of the size of the vessel, and some clubs also offer membership to those who do not own a yacht.

Cowes Week: Everything you need to know about this historic regatta

  • Harriett Ferris
  • July 5, 2015

Take a look at our essential guide to find out what you really need to know about Cowes Week

Skandia Cowes Week 2005 Day 1 copyright onEdition Photography

What is Cowes Week?

Cowes Week is one of the best know sailing regattas in the world. It is certainly one of the longest running, having first taken place in 1826. That’s 68 years before Yachting World was first published!

It has been held in August every year since then (except during the two World Wars). Over the years the regatta has been visited by royalty and other world-famous personalities as well as naval warships, superyachts and square-riggers.

Yachting World has covered the event from our very first issue. We have plenty of fascinating guides, tips on winning and live streaming video over at our Cowes Week page

What are this year’s dates?

This year the regatta will be held 8-15th August. The event lasts for eight days and takes place every August at Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

How many yachts are competing?

Between 800 and 1,000 yachts. The participants are split up into 40 classes, from modern multihulls, IRC yachts and classic dayboats.

RACING TIP: Cowes Week Tactics: use our local knowledge to get the best out of racing in the Solent

Who competes? What type of racing is it?

The event hosts amateur sailors alongside Olympic atheletes and professional sailors, with a wide range of ages and abilities.

What type of racing is it?

The majority of classes start and finish on the Royal Yacht Squadron line and sail varied ’round-the-cans’ courses designed to suit the style of boat and prevailing wind and tide conditions on each day. A number of classes also sail courses from a committee boat start on certain days.

It’s a logistical feat, with 1000 boats sailing some 30 different courses in one of the busiest commercial stretches of water in the world.

RACING TIP: Cowes Week sea breeze – getting to know your typical Solent summer winds

How do I watch the racing at Cowes?

The majority of classes start and finish on the Royal Yacht Squadron line while, just to the West, The Green offers a panoramic viewing platform of the yachts cheating the tide as they battle their way to the finish.

In addition, there are opportunities to get afloat to watch the racing from the organised spectator boat.

HIGHLIGHT: The Solent Sunbeam- a pretty dayboat that has been a stalwart of Cowes Week for nearly 90 years. Find out more here

I can’t attend. How can I follow the racing?

The Yachting World team is presenting the daily video highlights and will be part of the live streaming video that you can watch on the Yachting World website.

Alternatively, for results and official information on courses, updates on racing, plus interviews, listen in to Cowes Radio on 87.7FM.

What rating system is used?

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week uses three different rating systems, IRC and ISCRS for monohulls and MOCRA for multihulls.

Details of the systems are provided below:

This rating system is used by offshore multihulls and is administered by MOCRA Sailing who can be contacted at [email protected] or at www.mocra-sailing.co.uk . Typically about a dozen of these fast and exciting boats take part in Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.

A fully international rating system that is used by many thousands of boats worldwide. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week has 8 classes racing under this system all week. This ensures tight rating bands and close racing in fleets between 30 and 60. Ratings can be obtained from www.rorcrating.com . Owners who only enter one or two IRC races a year are able to apply for an IRC Single Event Rating at a reduced price. Further details here .

ISCRS is a simple rating system that has been developed by the Island Sailing Club to provide a rating system for those who do not require the sophistication of IRC. This system is free but you must be prepared to take the rating you are given! At Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week we offer cruisers that do not normally race the chance to take part in the regatta using this system. This is especially aimed at the hundreds of cruising boats that take part in the annual J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race and which therefore have a rating. If you do not already have an ISCRS rating and wish to enter this class then please contact us.

Who organises the racing?

Cowes Combined Clubs was formed in 1964 to co-ordinate the racing. Each of the member Clubs (Royal Thames YC, Royal London YC, Royal Southampton YC, Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes Town Regatta, Island Sailing Club, Royal Southern YC, Royal Corinthian YC and the Royal Ocean Racing Club) plays an active role in running the racing during the event while the overall coordination is handled by the Executive Management Team and staff of the Cowes Week Ltd organisation.

I’d like to enter my boat for next year. What do I do?

The Notice of Regatta is available to download here and you can enter online here .

Cowes & East Cowes from the air

Cowes & East Cowes from the air

Around the world, Cowes is the town people think of when the Isle of Wight is mentioned.

Cowes, and its sister across the river, East Cowes, are well known around the globe for yachting and royalty.

Cowes Week is the highlight of the packed yachting calendar while over the River Medina, the imposing royal palace of the past, Queen Victoria’s beloved Osborne House , dominates the landscape.

These two towns are divided by the river but united in being the gateway to the Island for traffic from the Red Funnel Southampton ferries.

There is so much to see in both towns so, Say Yes to getting the tang of the sea in your nose.

As well as being a magnet for tourists they both have thriving boatbuilding industries, so crucial to the Isle of Wight economy in the past and present.

There are bags of things to do on each bank of the Medina and the easiest way to get between the two is via the vehicle and foot passenger chain ferry that only takes a few minutes to link the two towns.

Things to Do

Stroll along the High Street, Parade and Esplanade for wonderful views of the bustling harbour and across The Solent. See the prestigious yacht clubs and, if you are lucky, hear the small cannon at the Royal Yacht Squadron fire to start or finish another top-level yacht race.

Find out about the boating history of Cowes by visiting Cowes Maritime Museum in the middle of the town, while the Sir Max Aitken Museum provides another fascinating glimpse into the town’s story.

Northwood House is a centre for many concerts and events, such as The Wight Proms, the IW Literary Festival and the Great Wight Bite Food Festival.

You can also shop until you drop in the independent stores that fill the High Street, with numerous quality pubs, restaurants and cafes mingled in with the retail experience .

Across the water in East Cowes, Osborne  is a day out on its own - the utterly stunning house which was built in an Italianate style under the supervision of Prince Albert, the Queen’s consort, drawing gasps of admiration and just wait until you see the Indian-inspired Durbar Room and the beautiful gardens.

Check out The Gallery , part of the Classic Boat Museum, which also has a site in Cowes.

St Mildred’s Church at Whippingham was Queen Victoria’s personal favourite and well worth a visit, whilst the town’s seafront provides great Solent views.

Places to eat

Cowes is a haven for foodies, whether you like fish, Isle of Wight meat or something a little more exotic, there is something for everyone. The Smoking Lobster and Gastronomy are two of the favourites in the town but the choice just starts there. If you like a something a little different then The Basque Kitchen offers a taste of that region, infused with Isle of Wight produce .

If pubs with grub are more your taste then The Duke of York is a nautically themed family run Inn worth a visit and The Ancho r is a popular spot for food, drink and live music.

Across the Medina, East Cowes has a good choice of pubs and restaurants too including the popular Lifeboa t pub. Albert Cottage is a popular wedding venue but also serves afternoon teas and has an a la carte restaurant.

If you are looking for something a little less formal in East Cowes, then Prego offers top notch Italian food while The Prince of Wales pub is ideally situated for a bite after a visit to Osborne House.

You can find out more about where to dine and drink in the area  here .

Places to stay

From boutique hotels to rooms above a town centre pub, the two towns have plenty of options for you to lay your head . There are also loads of self-catering choices in both towns but book early as the towns are very popular in the yachting season and particularly around Cowes Week and Round-the-Island Race.

If you want a very special, regal air to your stay then Osborne House has several options for self-catering, including Pavilion Cottage , a former cricket pavilion used by officer cadets, in the grounds of Queen Victoria’s former home.

For families, Waverley Park caravan site is ideal.

Over the water in Cowes, the New Holmwood Hotel offers superb Solent views to take in the sailing, shipping and the New Forest.

Just outside Cowes, Parkdean Resorts’ Thorness Bay site offers caravans and camping options in lovely countryside with lots of amenities and its own beach.

You are never far from a big yachting event in Cowes. Including the Rolex Fastnet Race; Round-the-Island Race and Cowes Week.If you like the elegance of yachts from a bygone age, Classics Week takes place in July, while petrolheads will love the thrill of the start of the Cowes-Torquay Powerboat Race during August.

If the arts are more your thing, then Northwood House hosts The Wight Proms in August and The Isle of Wight Literary Festival in October.

For a full events calendar, head to our What's On page.

Tourist Information

For the latest information about the two towns, go to the Tourist Information Point at Aqua Marina Gifts in Cowes or the one in the community library in East Cowes.

The Royal London Yacht Club, formed in 1838, is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs in Britain.

The Club was started by a group of gentlemen who sailed on the River Thames and met regularly at the Coal Hole Tavern off the Strand and kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps and thus the Arundel Yacht Club came into being. In 1845 the Members voted to assume the title ‘London Yacht Club’. At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a white ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and   a gold star in the canton below and in 1846 the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star.  In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of William IV, became   Patron   of the London Yacht Club and thus became ‘Royal’, and at that time, the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs.  A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a blue ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly. A burgee was adopted which, unlike   many   clubs, actually   corresponded   with   the ensign.

The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread but in 1882 it was decided to move to Cowes where a lease was taken on the two Regency houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today.

yacht clubs cowes

Only the second yacht club to be formed in Cowes the Royal London was given the first Monday of Cowes Week as its race day and it still is to this day. Royal patronage came again when in 1893 the Duke of York became Admiral until 1911 when he ascended the throne as King George V. The present Admiral is HRH the Princess Anne who succeeded her Father the Duke of Edinburgh in 2012.

The influence of the Royal London on yachting and yacht racing has never waned from the earliest days when the Club fostered innovations and was instrumental in establishing a universal  set of rules and system of measurement.

The Club has always been associated with Metre Yachts and it is appropriate that the now annual Cowes Classics Week is probably the most successful event that the Royal London has run for many years.

The regatta has been growing year on year and is being referred to as ‘the Goodwood Revival of Yachting’ and ‘one of Europe’s most important classic yacht regattas’.

In 2016 the Club will be running World Championships for the Tempest and Etchells classes.

Is it safe?

Sailing carries an element of risk. However, safety is a fundamental requirement of our Club in all aspects of sailing activities. All sailors are required to register ('Sign on') prior to sailing, and after leaving the water ('Signoff'). This procedure applies prior to the start of Discover Sailing Program and at the end of the session. Club patrol boats are on duty at all times during on-water activities, under supervision of the Officer of the day. It is essential that all who attend Discover Sailing Program are adequate swimmers and are capable of climbing into a boat after a capsize. Adults particularly should ensure they are physically fit. Please inform the Administrator or Head Instructor of anything which may impact on your sailing ability.

Buoyancy Vests:

The wearing of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON THE WATER is a strictly enforced club rule. The Sailing School recommends:- Children under 12 years PFD Type 1 (AS1512). Persons 12 years and over - PFD Type 2. During training appropriate PFD's are made available for all sailors from child sizes XXS through to XXL Adult.

Training will be held regardless of the weather. If the conditions are unsuitable for on-water activities, theory sessions or other activities will be held in the clubhouse or on the lawn.

What to wear and bring with you

This list provided below outlines what you should bring to the program. Even if it is a beautiful day, it is still COLD on the water!

  • WETSUIT this is mandatory not an option especially for Tackers! - full body type if possible and not too tight. Wetsuits are available at low cost from many opportunity shops.
  • Woollen (non synthetic) jumper –close fitting and thin if possible. This will be worn underneath the wetsuit. Thermal tops / leggings are also good.
  • Windproof / water proof jacket / slicker.
  • Warm Beanie (polar fleece or wool, not nylon)
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • If you wear spectacles, bring some elastic to tie them on with.
  • Sunscreen, and if you have a fair complexion, zinc for your nose as well
  • Sailing or surf booties - woollen socks with an old pair of runners will suffice (no bare feet)
  • Towel and a complete change of warm clothes including socks.
  • Garbage bag to put wet clothes into at the end of the day.
  • Water bottle
  • Life jacket – PFD (this will be loaned to you for the course from the Club if you don’t have one)

Parents – get involved too!

Parents of children sailors are encouraged to assist in various ways – on the beach, launching and retrieving boats to and from the water. Please let us know how you can help. The club house will be open with hot drinks and other beverages available. As a member of the Cowes Yacht Club you are encouraged to become involved in the club activities on and off the water, use the facilities, make friends and join us at social events.

Purchasing a boat

The choice of boat will depend on the age, skill and weight of the sailor. For young sailors (under 50kg), we recommend an ‘Optimist’. Adult sailors should consider purchasing either the Sabre dinghy (one person) or Pacer dinghy (two persons). Please speak to one of our Instructors to discuss the most suitable boat for you.

Payment is required at the time of enrolment, please go to the top of this page to register.

The number of places available in both adult’s and children’s training squads is limited, so enrolments will be accepted on a first-in basis in the order completed Enrolment Forms are received together with full payment, until the squad limit is reached. This rule applies to all applications, including Club members and in the interests of fairness to all will be strictly enforced

The Cowes Yacht Club hope to provide an informative and invigorating Discover Sailing Program and encourages all students to have fun, because that is what sailing is all about!

Come and join in a great family club environment. The whole family is welcome and encouraged to be involved with the many aspects of the sailing club.

An Insider's Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Nightlife

As a city that never sleeps, Moscow is known for its vibrant nightlife as much as for its stunning architecture. Having a plethora of choice, you may need someone to guide guide you through the club scene of Russia’s capital. Read on for the best places to take you through the night.

One of Moscow’s oldest nightclubs, Propaganda is an iconic spot that’s been around since the 1990s. Featuring deliberately shabby interiors, Propaganda, affectionately called “ propka ” by regulars, still gathers crowds even on weekdays. The club is particularly favored for scoring world-class DJs, hosting gay parties on Sundays and offering tasty and inexpensive food .

7 Bolshoy Zlatoustinsky Pereulok, Moscow, Russia , +7 495 624 5732

Another legendary spot, frequented by the cool crowd, this bar was founded by celebrated Russian designer Denis Simachev. Fancier and pricier than Propaganda, it’s worth a visit if only for eclectic interiors and salmon pizza.

Nauka i Iskusstvo

Tiny and nondescript, Nauka i Iskusstvo (‘Science and Art’) is all about the music . Although there are no fancy cocktails, glitzy interiors or bohemian entourage, the club hosts some of the best electronic parties, hip music gigs and cool designer shows.

13/15 Nastavnichesky Pereulok, bld.3, Moscow, Russia

One of Moscow’s quirkiest nightclubs, Squat ¾ occupies the basement of the former Central Baths building. Instagrammed by Moscow’s it-girls, the club is famous for gothic techno-balls and bohemian raves. Apart from the club and a bar, it is also home to a Greek cafe, barber shop and fashion store.

3 Teatralny Proyezd, Bld. 4, Moscow, Russia , +7 967 162 6062

The newest venue on the list, Pluton is located on the premises of the hip design center Artplay. Despite the high ceilings of a former industrial building and tiled walls, Pluton feels strangely homely and comforting. Opened in 2017, this is not a nightclub in the traditional sense. Pluton promotes all kinds of events: from cathartic ambient, to jazz music to art-performances.
