Superyacht Crew Salary Guide – 2023

  • Superyacht Crew Salary Guide – 202...

Working as a crew member on a Superyacht has some incredible perks…

… from being on the ocean and seeing new countries to brushing shoulders with the rich and famous and, of course, earning an amazing salary.

As we begin 2024, we thought it a good opportunity to look back at 2023 to see how the industry faired and whether there have been any changes to salary, tips, and working conditions.

The good news is that things have got better! Since the pandemic, the Superyacht industry has seen significant growth the industry has grown significantly over the last couple of years .

As the number of Superyachts being built increases, so does the demand for crew; there has never been a better time to enter the industry.

Typically, the entry-level salary for a Deckhand and Steward/ess ranges between €2,000 and €3,500, rising to €4,000+ for more senior roles. A Captain can make €10,000+ per month, depending on the size of the Superyacht!

Moreover, as you’ll be living onboard the yacht, there are no living expenses to worry about. Your meals are prepared by the Chef onboard, too, and you rarely need to buy groceries or toiletries.

We can’t talk about Superyacht Salary without mentioning tips. The majority of Superyacht owners charter their yachts as the ultimate holiday experience! A Superyacht does not come cheap, with some chartering for One Million per week! Guests normally leave a tip and around 10% of the charter fee, which is shared equally among the crew. It is not unheard of for a Deckhand or Steward/ess to receive a €5,000 tip after a week’s trip!

Another huge benefit contributing to the amazing Superyacht salary is the potential for tax-free earnings (typically paid in Euros)!

Read on for our complete guide to the Superyacht crew salary for 2023…

How much do you make working on a Superyacht?

In short, your salary will depend on the role you work in on the Superyacht, in conjunction with its size; however, the average salary is €2,500 per month (most boats pay in Euros rather than pounds).

Several other factors will determine Superyacht crew salary, too, including previous experience, qualifications, and extra skills (such as Dinghy Instructor, Carpenter, and Divemaster, to name a few).

Whether the yacht is chartered or privately owned will all contribute to your monthly pay packet; your basic salary will be the same whether you work on a charter yacht or a private boat, though on a charter, you will generally receive tips; this usually around 10% of your monthly salary, or it can range between €1,500 to €5,000+ .

We’ve shared current Superyacht salary approximations for 2023 in the table below:

How much do you make working on a yacht?

Here’s a breakdown of superyacht crew salaries in more detail by role:, superyacht captain salary – €4,000 to €16,000+.

A Superyacht Captain is responsible for all activity onboard, crew safety and well-being, and the experience offered to guests.

The Captain is the owner’s main point of contact on the yachts; whether things are going right or wrong, it can be a highly pressured and stressful job.

The salary reflects the responsibility in this high-pressure environment, and the range in salary normally depends on experience and the boat’s length.

Generally, larger boats will carry more guests and staff; therefore, the Captain will have higher responsibilities, a bigger budget, and more challenges to cope with.

First Officer salary – €3,200 to €8,000+

The First Officer, also known as Chief Officer or Chief Mate, is always second in command to the Captain.

They will assist the Captain in a wide range of duties and tends to be responsible for the safety of the Superyacht and everyone on board. Furthermore, the role of the First Officer also includes bridge watches and navigation.

Due to needing a firm understanding of working on deck, the First Officer normally starts their career as a Deckhand and progresses from there.

If you are an experienced First Officer and have moved onto larger yachts, then your next step will be to become a Captain.

Superyacht Bosun salary – €3,200 to €5,000+

Otherwise known as the Senior Deckhand, the Bosun is the ‘line manager’ of all Deckhands on the boat. The responsibilities of the Bosun are to manage and maintain the exterior of the yacht to the highest order.

This role also includes spending time with the guests, making sure they are having fun and are safe on all the toys the Superyacht has, such as jet skis and dinghy sailing boats.

Chief Stewardess salary – €2,800 to €7,000+

The Chief Stewardess is responsible for the interior of the Superyacht. Attention to detail, elegance,

and cleanliness is paramount for this role.

Moreover, you will be required to perform duties discreetly and anticipate the requests and demands of guests, as well as manage your team of Stewardesses. A managerial background in hospitality will therefore help for this role.

Generally, the Chief Stewardess will have gained previous experience in an entry-level Stewardess role and fully understands the functions of a working Superyacht.

Superyacht Stewardess salary – €2,000 to €3,500+

This is an entry-level position working on board a Superyacht.

Open to Male and Female

Being a Superyacht Stewardess is a wide-reaching role covering three main areas: Service, Housekeeping, and laundry. Your actual day-to-day activities can vary depending on the type of yacht (private or charter), owner, and Itinerary. You will be the host, cleaner, florist, and housekeeper, and collectively responsible for looking after the guests 24/7.

If you are looking at not going to uni , and want a career with real progression and a very good salary, becoming a Superyacht Stewardess could be for you! If you would like to start a career as a Stewardess, then consider joining our Superyacht Steward/ess course.

Superyacht Deckhand salary – €2,000 to €3,500+

This is another entry-level role to work on a Superyacht.

Open to male and female

A very hands-on role, the Deckhand is responsible for the exterior of the yacht, and tasks will typically involve cleaning, painting, sanding, varnishing, and all general maintenance of the boat.

As with all Superyacht roles, working as a Deckhand requires some skills and qualifications before you start looking for work. The good news is that you don’t have to go to Uni to get whats required. You will be able to get qualified in a few weeks.

How to use the data presented here

The table has been drawn up with the information collated with figures from the past year within various yacht departments. Please note that they an indication only of starting salaries and the actual salary will vary depending on multiple factors.

Many elements need to be taken into consideration with regards to yacht crew salaries and not just the size of the yacht. The type of yacht (motor or sail), its usage (private, charter or both) and cruising schedule will influence the salary offered. Additionally, key elements of the candidate’s profile must also be reviewed, what is their previous experience, how long have they been in a particular role, have they recently acquired a new qualification, and do they have a specialised skill set that will influence the salary negotiation?

The highlighted section corresponds to yachts who offer a scheduled leave or rotational package.

Salaries here need to be modulated in accordance with the type of rotation offered, 5:1; 3:1 or 2:2 for example. There may be several different rotational schemes on a particular yacht, 5:1 for the junior crew, 3:1 for the intermediary position and full rotation for positions of responsibility.

The rotational salary is generally only a reduced monthly reduction (between 10 and 20%) and allows for a larger pool of candidates who are fully committed to the yacht, its programme and owner.

For many key roles, professional qualifications are the basis to establishing a guideline salary, notably in the Engineering  and Officer’s Department.

Following the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the yachting industry in 2020, the past 2021 was considered the year of revival for yacht crew placement.

With regards to salaries, the market saw a return to stability and no major new trends were recorded. There is always increased pressure to offer a scheduled leave or rotational scheme that now starts with yachts in the 40 to 50 metre range.

HOW MUCH DOES YACHT CREW EARN

Yacht crew salary guide.

After two exceptional years of dealing with Covid 19 and the impact it had on recruiting, the past year was very upbeat and fast-paced for yacht crew placement. The most significant trend was the extension of scheduled or rotational leave to positions outside of the engine room and the bridge.

The search and placement market has changed and crew are increasingly seeking a harmonious work-life balance. Although yachting salaries and leave packages are generally competitive, we have found that yachts need to be increasingly flexible to attract the best crew. Flexibility with regards to leave has become a key factor for all departments and allows for a larger pool of candidates who are fully committed to the yacht, its programme and owner.

Improved Leave Packages For Yacht Crew

Both the Deck/Bosun’s and the Interior/Galley Departments have witnessed a steady trend towards increased leave packages. For example, Senior Stews are now looking for a minimum of 90 days leave and 95% of the Chief Stews are looking for full rotation. Many Stew Head of Departments have come to realize that they too can benefit from scheduled or rotational leave that has in the past been reserved for the Engineers or Officer/Captains Departments.

Additionally, and in order to compete with the larger yachts, an important number of yachts under 70metres are now also considering increased leave packages to secure top crew.

Please note that the salaries below are an indication only of starting salaries and that the actual salary will vary depending on multiple factors; job specific skills, professional qualifications and experience.

YPI Crew’s 2022 Salary Report Revealed

working on superyachts salary

YPI CREW, the leading authority in yacht crew recruitment, has released its 2022 Yacht Crew Salary Report, providing in-depth and up-to-date salary analysis.

The report utilises 2021 data from YPI CREW’s various crew departments, spanning engineers, yacht deck crew, yacht chefs, and yacht interior crew. It offers a handy and comprehensive reference point for both yacht crew and employers

Overall, YPI CREW witnessed a significant increase in the number of job orders across all departments in 2021, with more crew connected with their dream careers. While the report doesn’t demonstrate any major new trends, it shows a return to stability following two years of Covid 19 disruption and the collapse of the crew recruitment market in April 2020.

“YPI CREW welcomed 2021 as the year of revival, and indeed it was,” said Laurence Lewis, YPI CREW’s president. “This was following the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the yachting industry where 2020 was considered the year of survival for yacht crew placement.”

She added: “It should be noted that due to a smaller number of junior-level hospitality, service and galley staff entering the market due to Covid 19 travel restrictions, essentially from the Southern Hemisphere, there has been tension on salaries in these departments throughout 2021.

“For example, in the chef’s department, in order to secure and especially retain qualified and experienced crew, salaries and scheduled leave have become an important part of the negotiation process with increased competition for the best all-round package.”

Crew salaries in the report depend on qualifications, a crew member's years of experience and, in some instances, whether a vessel is a private yacht or a charter yacht. Interestingly, the size of a yacht only impacts the earnings of select roles.

Yacht deck crew salaries

The highest-paid deck crew salaries were for captains, reflecting their pivotal role and the large amount of responsibility that they assume. In 2021, captains on a 100-metre plus yacht were paid an average salary of around 18,000 Euros per month, plus a discretionary bonus. At the other end of the spectrum, captain salaries on a yacht below 30-metre were significantly less at around 3,500 to 6,000 Euros per month.

It’s important to mention that the salaries across the deck department will vary depending on experience and qualifications. For example, entry-level junior deckhands have an expected monthly salary of between 2,700 to 2,800 Euros per month. However, the salaries grow up to 4,000 Euros for specialised and experienced deckhands.

Yacht engineer salaries

When talking about engineering salaries, the ranges very much depend on the certification that the candidate will hold.

Chief engineers on a 100-metre plus yacht typically earnt around 12,000 to 15,000 Euros per month in 2021. Comparatively, a chief engineer on a 30 to 40-metre yacht earnt on average between 4,000 to 6,000 Euros per month.

The lowest-paid salaries were for motorman, who typically could expect to earn between 3,200 to 4,000 Euros on larger sized vessels.

Yacht chef salaries

The most experienced yacht chefs working on yachts 100-metres plus earnt a monthly average salary of around 8,000 Euros plus per month in 2021, while a sous chef on the same sized vessel earnt on average 4,000 to 7,000 Euros per month. Third chefs typically earnt around 3,500 Euros per month.

At the other end of the spectrum, on vessels below 30-metres, a head chef earnt between 4,000 to 4,500 Euros. This typically represents a starting salary for chefs without yachting experience, and they would usually run the entire kitchen without any additional support from qualified chefs.

Yacht interior crew salaries

The highest-paid roles were for pursers and chief stews working on superyachts 80-metres plus. Average monthly salaries were from 7,000 to 8,000 Euros per month for these positions. Conversely, a chief stew on a yacht below 30-metres was paid on average 3,500 to 4,000 Euros per month in 2021.

Junior stews saw little change in their monthly income between vessel sizes, typically earning between 2,500 to 3,500 Euros, creeping up to 4,000 Euros on vessels sized 70-metres plus.

Nurses, a role that is ordinarily only found on larger superyachts, were paid on average 3,500 to 4,000 Euros plus per month in 2021. Spa therapists, another crew position typically only found on larger yachts, boasted a monthly salary of around 3,000 to 3,500 plus.

* Please note that the salaries will depend on the usage of the yacht, private or charter, and the level of study or qualification required for the specialist positions, such as spa manager, spa therapist and personal trainer. For example, as a personal trainer, HIIT, cardio, weight training, yoga or Pilates experience may be required or, for a nurse, the salary can be based on previous experience in hospitals and field of expertise.

Working on a superyacht - a complete guide.

Patrick Maflin

Working on a superyacht is an exciting prospect if you’re trying to find a job which offers something very different from your typical 9 to 5 grind.

There are numerous roles you may wish to consider on board a superyacht.

What you choose will depend on your personality, interests, skills and background.

In this complete guide to working on a superyacht we hope that you will gain a better understanding of how to best go about getting a job aboard a superyacht, to hopefully embark on the career of your dreams at sea.

What is a Superyacht?

What does working on a superyacht have to offer, what is the work ethic like, chief engineer, second & third engineer, technical officer, first & second officer, chief steward/stewardess, steward/stewardess, how much are yacht crew paid, what skills & experience are required, do i need any qualifications, how do i find a superyacht job, when are the yachting seasons.

A superyacht is the term used to describe any leisure yacht which is over 24 metres in length.

Nowadays the superyacht industry has become a very popular and lucrative one.

Many people are considering taking up a job on board a superyacht, especially since the hit reality TV series Below Deck gained worldwide popularity.

Yacht crew serving guests

Nowadays there are several superyachts sailing the seas, including motor and sail.

Between them, thousands of crew members are employed to ensure the superyacht is kept in top shape and that the owners and any guests on board are served to the highest standards.

Working within the superyacht industry can prove to be a very rewarding and enticing career for the right types of personality.

It’s certainly a different kind of career than most other traditional jobs.

There’s always a great deal going on on board, and travel and adventure will be an integral part of your life.

As most yachts head to the Mediterranean in the summer months, and the Caribbean in the winter, you will get to experience the sunniest places at the best times of the year.

Moreover, yacht crew are very well paid.

Salaries will vary considerably from one yacht to another, depending on its size and type.

It’s important however to bear in mind that working on a superyacht also means having to work long hours.

But the end result can be rewarding, especially if you spent over 183 days at sea.

This essentially means any income earned should qualify for the seafarers earning deduction , which means you pay zero income tax!

A traditional job will often have a set start and end time every day.

You head off home after a long day, and see your family and unwind for the rest of the evening.

This is certainly not the case with a job in the superyacht industry.

At the end of a long day, you will most likely spend the evening having dinner with the rest of the crew.

And you will generally share a cabin with another crew member, so essentially, you live and work in one place around the clock.

It’s therefore important to keep this in mind, along with your openness to this kind of lifestyle.

You need to have the right personality to be able to live in these conditions, and be very personable to get along well with others.

Thus, a friendly and outgoing personality is a must for a crew member.

You would need to also be a grafter with a great work ethic.

What are the Job Roles Aboard a Superyacht?

Yachts Moored in Marina

The Captain is the person responsible for the safe navigation and operation of the yacht.

The Captain will have full responsibility for the crew members, guests, tenders and toys.

Other responsibilities include money management and budgeting, overseeing the upkeep of the yacht, and managing refitting projects.

The role of the captain will vary depending on the size of the vessel.

The smaller the yacht, the more hands-on the captain will be.

Whereas with bigger yachts, the more the captain’s responsibilities become administrative in nature.

However, this job can be very lucrative and Captains tend to be very well paid .

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the engineering department, and for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.

The Chief Engineer will manage engineers, electricians and electronic technical officers, while reporting directly to the Captain.

The Chief Engineer tends to get involved in the daily work revolving around the mechanical and electrical operations of the ship.

They will also ensure that any planned maintenance takes place on time, and that should anything need fixing it is seen to as efficiently as possible.

This is another important role which involves maintaining the mechanical and electrical operations under control.

The second or third engineer will be responsible for small tasks as well as more complex ones, as they will need to see to anything that requires fixing, be it the main engine, an air conditioner or a jet ski.

They will also need to maintain an inventory of important parts required for possible breakages or replacements.

A Technical Officer or Electronic Technical Officer (ETO), as they are sometimes referred to, will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of equipment, including computers, communication equipment, electronic equipment, and audiovisual equipment.

Such equipment will be more advanced and more commonplace the larger the yacht.

The Technical Officer will need to see to the planned maintenance of the various systems.

Practically all superyachts will have a First Officer on board, but bigger vessels will typically employ a Second Officer as well.

The roles of such officers are very similar, and they revolve around the safety of the yacht and the people on board.

Hence their duties will include various safety and administrative tasks, overseeing all deck operations, supervising toys, undertaking bridge watches and keeping charts updated.

The second officer will act as an understudy to the first officer.

The Chief Steward/Stewardess is a high ranking role which involves being responsible for the interior of the yacht, as well as managing the interior staff members.

They will report directly to the Captain.

Some of the tasks that a Chief Steward will need to oversee include cabin preparation, food service, drink service, silver service, flower arranging, organising events and arranging trips.

It’s a very varied and demanding role, but a yacht stewardess earns a good salary .

This is one of the most common entry level jobs in the yacht industry.

The primary role of a steward or stewardess is to ensure that the interior of the yacht is as clean and organised as possible.

This includes cabin preparation and cleaning, maintaining drinks stock, drink preparation and serving, laundry, ironing, plant care and flower arranging, among others.

The Chef will be responsible for everything relating to food - from the purchase of food items and its transportation to the yacht, to its preparation and presentation to the guests on the table.

The chef will also be responsible for the galley, including its organisation and clean-up.

The chef will need to be creative and inventive, to ensure varied and balanced menus.

Only experienced chefs tend to work aboard superyachts, with an impressive CV of having worked in commercial kitchens for several years prior.

So it’s understandable that a yacht chef makes a very good income .

On larger yachts there will also be a sous chef or second chef alongside the head chef.

They will be responsible for culinary duties as well as assisting the chef in various ways.

The sous chef will typically take care of the cooking for the crew members along with any side work required for meal preparations for the yacht owner and their guests.

The Bosun, or as sometimes referred to, the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand will be responsible for maintaining the yacht’s exterior in tip top shape.

They will also be in charge of all the deckhands.

The Bosun’s role includes organising deck operations such as the maintenance of toys and tenders as well as their proper storage, deck maintenance and storage of any supplies required for deck operations.

The Bosun may also undertake bridge watch duties at sea as well as be the main tender driver.

The Deckhand position comprises numerous roles which revolve around cleaning and maintenance.

The deckhands will be responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht in good condition, and this will include tasks such as painting, polishing, varnishing, sanding, finishing and carpentry jobs too.

Deckhands will also drive tenders and toys.

A deckhand will often need to escort guests who will be using toys.

At times deckhands will also help out interior staff in cleaning cabins, serve meals or to provide assistance in the galley.

Whilst this is considered a low level position aboard yachts, many deckhands gain certification before embarking on a yachting career to ensure they are fully skilled to do the job.

Competition for yacht deckhand roles is fierce, so before applying for a deckhand job , it’s best to be prepared first.

The salaries of the various yacht crew members vary from one yacht to another, depending on the type of yacht, and its size.

However, to give you an idea, the average superyacht salary for an entry level job, such as a steward or a deckhand, will typically range between £1,700 to £3,000 per month.

There’s also the addition of tips to consider.

Sometimes during charter season you can earn a substantial amount from tips, which could even end up doubling your salary.

Another thing to consider is that if you are a UK resident, you would benefit from a tax-free salary if you pass your residency test .

You also need to bear in mind that your day-to-day costs would be taken care of if you work on a yacht, as you would also be living on it.

Hence you will not have to pay for water or electricity bills, rent or meals.

Doctor signing ENG1 Medical

As with any job, the more experience and relevant skills you have, the better.

For example, gaining an ENG1 Medical Certificate and the STCW Basic Safety Training certificate are a must.

You may need to also beef up your CV by demonstrating that you have various other skills or training which will come in useful.

You should try dockwalking to get some experience on board a yacht, even if for just a short period of time.

This will help to show that you are willing to work and learn, while also giving you some experience to include in your CV.

You will need to get an ENG1 medical to certify that you are fit to work at sea.

The STCW Basic Safety Training is a mandatory qualification for a seafarer.

There are numerous other courses which you may opt to follow to be better qualified and improve your chances of getting a job on a superyacht.

For instance, courses about hospitality, flower arranging, food and drink service are ideal for someone who aspires to work as a steward.

Courses on carpentry, powerboats and diving are ideal for anyone wishing to get a job as a deckhand.

The more relevant skills you have, the better your chances are of getting a job as a crew member more quickly and easily.

To get a job on a superyacht, it’s important to start off by preparing yourself well to be a good prospective applicant.

Complete the STCW Basic Safety Training course and get as many relevant qualifications as you can.

You will also need to hold an ENG 1 medical which proves that you are fit to work on board a sea vessel.

Make sure to prepare a good CV to delineate your qualifications and experience to prospective employers.

You may wish to check for jobs through yachting agencies and online job platforms.

It’s also important to understand how the superyacht charter season works to know when is the best time to look for such job openings.

Dockwalking is a great way to find a job as a crew member, or to gain some experience which will improve your chances of getting an even better job in the future.

The superyacht season in the Mediterranean starts off in March and goes on until May.

The winter season in the Caribbean ranges from October to May the following year.

During these periods the demand for new crew increases greatly.

Hence this is the best time to look for a job on a yacht.

By now you should have a good idea of the various careers available on board a superyacht, along with the various responsibilities of the different roles.

We also gave you some tips to help you to get started and how to best go about finding and applying for such a post.

How Much Superyacht Crews Really Get Paid

Sick of the rising cost of living? This could be the answer...

How Much Superyacht Crews Really Get Paid

Madison Jay, a superyacht crew member with 6.5 years at sea, says superyacht crew typically start on a salary of 2,500 euros a month. According to the Superyacht Crew Academy, superyacht crew can earn up to 20,000 euros a month, once they have more experience, and if they score a job on a bigger, top-dollar paying boat.

Madison Jay, a superyacht crew member who has spent 6 and a half years at sea, has taken to TikTok to share how much superyacht crew typically get paid. In a video , she said: “The starting salary for a superyacht crew is 2,500 euro per month and then your leave allowance is anywhere from 38 days to 90 days.”

“All of this obviously increases as you gain more experience and skills over time. The other thing to note is that there are no living expenses with working onboard a boat – you live on board so it’s rent-free, you don’t have any bills.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Superyacht Crew Academy (@superyachtcrewacademy)

On top of all that, Madison said, “Chefs prepare your meals, there are snacks provided, there’s even crew alcohol provided most of the time, and your toiletries are available for free too – so everything you make is yours. If you are sick of the rising cost of living then this might be the perfect solution for you.” In a recent Instagram post, Madison also said: “If you get to earn USD, the current exchange rate is essentially giving you a 12% pay rise.”

In the comments section, Madison added: “Some boats don’t make tips, others can make up to an additional €40k every summer season.” She also said the cost to prepare to be hired depends on the country (and where you relocate to look for work, and how long it takes you).

Then, when it comes to the initial costs to get the legal requirements to work onboard, she says that is “well and truly covered within your first month onboard.” Other interesting questions she answered included how long you stay on the boat for (“you live on the boat permanently [and] trips can be anywhere from a couple days to months at a time”) and how tax works (“you are responsible to pay tax / declare your wage in your country, each country has different rules for ‘seafarers’… Most people earn tax free income”).

She also touched on the differences between working on a charter boat vs. working for a private owner, explaining: “There are lots of things that affect what you are paid on top – rotation, standard leave, busy, quiet, and generally just what the owner wants to pay!”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Madison | Superyacht Chief Stew (@madisonjay__)

TikTok user superyachtgirl has also talked about how much yachties get paid, explaining in a video that “the size of your salary depends on the size of your yacht and also your position on board” and claiming that “it also varies if you’re on a charter boat or a private boat” because on charter boats you get tips whereas on private boats “you don’t get tips but you do get bonuses and stuff at the end of the year, [and this] varies between each program.” Superyacht Crew Academy , for their part, say crew salaries range from 2,000 euros to 20,000 euros depending on yacht size and experience.

If you’re sick of the rising costs of living, who knows, perhaps working on a superyacht is the change you need in your life in 2023?

As Madison points out, given the pending recession, working on a superyacht is an ever more attractive proposition because while living expenses have gone up in price, salaries have not, meaning “it’s impossible to get ahead & bills/living expenses are chewing up majority of peoples earnings.” Meanwhile, working on a yacht, you are not impacted by the rising costs of living (because everything you consume is free).

Madison also points out that working for the super rich gives you a certain level of job security. On Instagram she wrote: “Yachting seems to be somewhat ‘protected’ by most things that happen around the world” pointing out that “during Covid, yes some people lost jobs but most of us were busier than ever.”

She says this was because “rich people were still rich and they saw a yacht as a ‘covid free’ safe haven when they couldn’t holiday anywhere else.”

“This is also a massive reason as to why there are now 1024 superyachts in build or on order, which is a 24.7% rise on the previous year!! The demand for good crew is only growing.” Madison Jay

Though it’s not all fun in the sun (there are also Atlantic crossings and many days of hard work), the camaraderie can reportedly be amazing, and you get a peek behind the veil at how the other half live. According to superyachtgirl all you need to get started is an ENG1 Medical Certificate, the STCW95 qualification (a 5 day or so course) a food hygiene level 2 qualification and a half-day security duties course.

Then you need to actually get hired. That might be hard, but at least you now know how much you are likely to get paid if and when this happens.

Working on Superyachts: Our Guide to Getting Paid and Traveling the World

Sustainable travel expert, adventure seeker

Jakobstad, Finland

Throughout m y  ten years as a superyacht stewardess, people have been intrigued by the job and what they imagine it entails. Admittedly, I  have  worked for celebrities  and  visited places I doubt I would’ve seen if it weren’t for the job. However, being repeatedly woken by the steward’s buzzer and requests to “make the engines less noisy” is infuriating, even when it’s at the behest of one of the world’s most famous drummers. And guess what? A visit to Mustique is a lot less paradisiacal when you have to spend your one hour ashore frantically trying to find a blind masseuse and a case of vintage rosé.

As a seasoned yachtie, I can tell you all about the pros and cons of this much-lusted over job. Read on and find out if a life below decks could be the life for you.

You’ll earn the kind of cash that can buy you a house

working on superyachts salary

Become a yachtie and you’ll see a fat paycheck and your bank balance balloon as you start to earn the big bucks. We’re talking average monthly salaries starting around 3,000 Euro. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, keep in mind that you’ll have all of your expenses (everything from toothpaste to health insurance) conveniently paid for by the yacht’s owner. Smart sailors know that savings can quickly add up, especially when they are supplemented by generous charter tips. Hello down payment on a little white house by the sea!

Pro tip: Many yachties get a bit carried away with being able to drop 150€ on a rosé lunch without flinching. I did, and the fact that I now own a ridiculous amount of unwearable shoes doesn’t make up for it. While it’s ok to occasionally revel in having an abundance of cash to spend on whatever you like, you’ll regret it if you don’t see your salary as an opportunity to invest in your future.

You’ll see some of the most stunning and remote corners of the world

working on superyachts salary

While the well-trodden  Mediterranean-in-summer-and-Caribbean-in-winter  circuit is nothing to be sniffed at, you could also hit the jackpot with a more adventurous owner. Imagine setting sail for a round-the-world trip, experiencing the lagoon-like waters and balmy trade-winds of the Pacific and/or exploring the Antarctic’s remote, white wilderness? Become a yachtie and these dreamlands can become your next port of call.

Personal faves:  If you’re lucky like me, you’ll get to sail to the  awe-inspiring Galápagos islands where you’ll experience close encounters with sea turtles, sea lions, and rays. Or, you’ll visit the incredible Marlborough Sounds and soak up cinematic colours, not to mention the chance to taste green-lipped mussels, washed down with that celebrated Kiwi wine: the Sauvignon Blanc.

You’ll laugh your butt off with newfound friends

working on superyachts salary

There’s usually a tremendous sense of camaraderie on board a superyacht. The shared ‘pains’ of living the yachtie life acts as a kind of social glue and will no doubt result in friendships that you’ll cherish forever, not to mention places to crash in all corners of the globe.

Personal faves: I’m still regularly in touch with many of the funny, interesting, and lovely people that I worked with eons ago. In fact, it’s a whopping twelve years since I crossed paths with the Italian deckhand with a mop of blonde curls and wicked sense of humour that I still hang with. We’ll be celebrating our 11th anniversary later this year.

You’ll entertain your mates back home with stories that will blow their minds

working on superyachts salary

A season on the sea will give you enough stories to entertain your mates back home for the next two years. My first season’s stories range from the sensational (a famous rapper handing me 500 USD for packing his suitcase in under a minute) to the distressing (days of rough seas and being violently ill in the Bay of Biscay). And from the hilarious (getting my butt stuck in a porthole while sneaking back onboard after curfew) to the totally brag-worthy ones (chats with Jamiroquay on a private Jamaican beach).

You’ll soak up epic sunsets and spot amazing wildlife all the time

working on superyachts salary

The most dramatic seascapes, the illustrious green flash, pods of dolphins, and seas alight with phosphorescence are just a few of the wondrous sights that’ll become part of your everyday life. When sailing conditions are sweet and you’re bantering away with fellow crew while helming one of the world’s most beautiful sailing boats, it’s easy to think that this is  the  best job in the world.

Pro tip:  While it’s tempting to drag your feet and whine as you get hauled out of bed in the dead of night, try your best to stay stay present. Looking back, it’s during those 4-8am watch shifts that I witnessed the most vivid sunrises, saw the most incredible marine life, and had the best conversations with fellow crew.

You’ll feel as though you’re stuck in a BBC drama

working on superyachts salary

Those weeks (or months) when you have charter guests (or the boss) offer plenty of moments that are less than ideal. To be honest, waking up early to serve breakfast and working a 16-18 hour day is nothing out of the ordinary. While some guests show genuine appreciation, others might call you ‘the girl’ and talk to you like a duchess might to a servant in a BBC costume drama. And you? That’s right, you have your hands behind your back and you smile.

Pro tip: Whether you’re dealing with an owner with more money than manners, a toffee-nosed guest, or an inconsiderate lump whose offensiveness is unintentional, don’t take it personally— it’s their problem, not yours.

You’ll find ironing someone else’s undies to be positively unglamorous

working on superyachts salary

The work mostly consists of detailing and, believe you me, there’s nothing glamorous about that. Mopping up blood juice from the broken meat freezer is something no one aspires doing. Nor is folding little fans from the ends of toilet paper, dusting behind never opened books, or ironing the captain’s Calvin Kleins. In fact, many tasks you’ll be asked to do will make no sense at all . Guess what? You’ll be doing them anyway.

Pro tip: Questioning whether certain tasks are necessary or suggesting a different way of doing things hardly ever goes down well. Almost comparable to being in the merchant navy, you’ll need to respect the chain of command. Simply keep your cool and do as you’re asked and you’ll have very little to worry about.

You won’t make it to your best friend’s wedding

working on superyachts salary

A random rich person (the yacht’s owner, aka, your boss) is now in control of your time, how much you sleep, your general whereabouts, and pretty much everything else that’s going on in your life. Your best friend’s wedding? Christmas with your family? Chances are you won’t be able to make it to either one. Even if there’s nothing scheduled to happen at the time you want to be away, you can be guaranteed that a last minute charter or broker’s viewing will arise and ruin your plans spectacularly.

Say goodbye to privacy and alone time

working on superyachts salary

You’ll be sharing everything and ‘alone’ time will be a thing of the past. What’s more, you’re stuck on a boat with the same people all the time. Most of them are probably people you wouldn’t choose to hang out with and some will have habits that are downright disturbing. When you’re tired, grumpy, and fed-up with having to step over your roomie’s dirty knickers, you’ll start to sweat the small stuff and, occasionally, will feel the urge to strangle somebody. However, you won’t be able to ‘walk it off’ or talk to your mates about it over a beer in the pub.

Pro tip: Although onboard politics are a fact of yachtie-life, don’t join the drama club. Listen and offer advice when appropriate, but avoid getting sucked into someone else’s saga and/or spreading gossip. Oh, and a note on the latter: wherever you are on a yacht, there will always be someone that can overhear your conversation, no matter how far away from the others you think you may be.

There’s no escaping the industry’s ‘golden handcuffs’

working on superyachts salary

Those fat stacks I mentioned as one of the pros? Well, the downside is that it’s easy to become dependent on the income the industry can offer. In fact, many yachties end up feeling trapped within a lifestyle that they themselves have subconsciously created.

Pro tip: Think about the future before you make investments that could ‘imprison’ you. If you don’t, you may one day find that you can’t afford to leave a job that you stopped enjoying a while ago.

Still up for this? Here’s how to go about it:

working on superyachts salary

Step 1: Complete an STCW Basic Training Course. This is required if you dream of being able to work on a commercially registered yacht. Aside from classroom days, this five-day course includes a lot of fun stuff, such as clambering into life rafts and putting out fires the size of a house.

Step 2: Get ready to yachtifie your CV (make sure to mention hospitality work or other relevant experience such as massage or beautician skills) and head to a super yacht hub such as Palma de Mallorca, Antibes, or Ft. Lauderdale.

Step 3: Finally, you’ll need to sign up with one of the yacht crew agencies and keep checking social media pages such as Palma Yacht Crew ; the latter posts jobs and day work positions regularly.

A last word of advice:

working on superyachts salary

Before you start booking flights and selling your furniture, I have one more piece of advice to share. One of the reasons I kept returning to work on boats is that I couldn’t seem to adjust to a ‘normal’ life ashore. Whenever I’d leave a job, I’d get itchy feet and crave adventure and the only way I knew how to get that (with a good salary) was in yachting.

So, if you still find yourself down yachting’s rabbit hole five or ten years from now, don’t say I didn’t warn y’all! But hey, if that rabbit hole includes ticking off a huge chunk of your travel bucket list and making lifelong friends, you’ll have zero regrets.

How to Work on a Superyacht, with no Experience

Working in the superyacht industry looks like the dream job, right? But, how do you get started with no work experience? With over 12 years in the industry, interviewing and hiring countless candidates across various positions, we know first hand what information you require to get your first real crew job on a superyacht. In this post we highlight some of the features of our “Beginners Guide to Yachting” Ebook which explains all you need to know from how to get your CV yacht perfect, typical daily stewardess or deckhand duties, how to find day wo rk, and more.

What kinds of entry level positions could I apply for?

The two most common entry level positions on yachts are stewardess and deckhand jobs. These are both junior ranks whose primary concern is to keep the guests happy and ensure the interior and exterior are kept immaculately clean.

What previous experience is useful when looking for a job on a yacht?

While working on a yacht is certainly different to any land-based career, there are a few land-based jobs that would have equipped you with skills useful on a vessel.  Jobs that may be useful include:

  • Hospitality-related jobs
  • Waiting tables in a high-end restaurant
  • Child care or au pairing
  • Carpentry
  • Sports or diving instructor

If you have already completed some form or degree or diploma in engineering or mechanics, this is also considered a huge plus.

Are there specific qualifications I need?

Yes. You will need an STCW 10 certificate to understand basic safety protocols, as well as an ENG1 Medical Certificate to prove that your health is in good enough shape to join a vessel. Get Onboard Superyacht Academy offers complete STCW and ENG1 training in Cape Town, South Africa. These are the only compulsory documents needed, but if you are interested in a specific role, we offer specialised courses to equip you for these.

How do I get my first job on a yacht?

Once you are qualified, follow these steps:

  • Construct a CV. Be sure to include all relevant information and documents, as well as a friendly, yet professional photo of yourself. Download our free template for a starting point.
  • Pick a location to start. Antibes in France, Palma de Mallorca in Spain, and Fort Lauderdale in Florida are great places to start out as a newbie.
  • Find some day work. This is work outside of a formal contract, which may involve helping out for a day to several weeks. Day work is an excellent opportunity to network, build contacts in the industry, and get a foot in on your journey to securing a more permanent job.

How much money do you make working on a yacht?

The standard entry level salary for a junior stewardess or deckhand ranges between €2,000 – €2,500 or $2,300 – $2,800 per month. This amount is generally tax free, although the onus is on each crew member to check with their home county about tax obligations. Certain countries are tax exempt, provided you spend more than six months out of the county.

A California millennial started secretly working 2 remote jobs so he could afford the Mounjaro weight-loss drug. He's on track to make $166,000 this year and says he's lost 45 pounds.

  • A millennial in California is secretly working a second remote job so he can afford weight-loss drugs.
  • He said taking Mounjaro and Zepbound has helped him lose 45 pounds.
  • He's on track to make $166,000 this year and said he doesn't work more than 60 hours a week.

Insider Today

Last August, George decided he wanted to try to work a second remote job — and not tell his employers he was job juggling.

The California - based millennial was bored with his contract finance gig in the biotech industry, he told Business Insider via email. And he thought the extra income would help him afford rent, pay down credit card debt , and travel more.

But there was another big reason he wanted to be " overemployed: " It would help him afford weight-loss drugs .

"I wanted to start on Mounjaro and knew I couldn't afford the out-of-pocket cost without a second job," said George, whose identity is known to BI but has been withheld due to his fear of professional repercussions.

Mounjaro is among the appetite-suppressing GLP-1 drugs that have helped some people manage their weight. The Eli Lilly-produced drug received FDA approval in 2022 as a diabetes treatment, and last November, the FDA approved Zepbound — a weight-loss-specific version of the drug with the same main ingredient . Mounjaro and Zepbound are in the same class of drugs as Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy .

Weight-loss drugs have grown in popularity over the last year, but their costs have kept them out of reach for some people. Zepbound and Wegovy each cost over $1,000 a month , require weekly injections, and may need to be taken on a long-term basis to sustain any weight loss . What's more, many insurance plans don't cover them .

In late September, George started a second full-time remote job in the same industry. He's on track to earn roughly $166,000 this year across his jobs, according to documents viewed by Business Insider. The contract roles pay a combined $80 an hour, and George said occasional overtime pay offsets the lack of paid vacation time. He said he's only told his family and a few friends about his overemployment.

George said roughly doubling his earnings has had a huge impact on his life. He was able to afford Mounjaro and said he's dropped 45 pounds — from 220 lbs to 175 lbs — since he started taking it in October. The extra income has also helped him pay down credit card debt and made his monthly bills much more manageable.

"I don't stress about every little cent anymore," he said. "It has been tremendously freeing."

George is among a niche group of remote workers secretly holding multiple jobs and earning well over six figures a year. These people have used their extra income to pay off mortgages , save for an early retirement , and take lavish vacations . While some bosses may be fine with employees taking on extra work , being caught doing so without company approval could be a fireable offense .

For George, his overemployment has been worth the risk.

Working efficiently is the key to avoiding burnout as an overemployed worker

When George began looking for a second job, he said he didn't know anything about the overemployed community or the subreddit where job jugglers share tips and tricks. He said his job search consisted of working with a few recruiters and staffing firms and applying for jobs on his own.

After a roughly monthlong search, he started his second job and was able to afford Mounjaro.

Between October and the end of 2023, George paid over $3,200 for three months of Mounjaro injections, according to a document viewed by Business Insider.

But when Eli Lilly rolled out its new weight-loss drug Zepbound in November, it began offering discounted prescriptions of Zepbound to patients whose insurance didn't cover the drug. George switched to Zepbound and said he's now paying roughly $550 a month for his weight-loss medication, though this discount could expire at the end of 2024 .

George hasn't had too much trouble juggling multiple jobs — he said he typically gets all his work done in less than 60 hours a week. While one of his teams goes into the office every once in a while for a happy hour, he said this isn't mandatory.

His main piece of advice for job jugglers: Stay on top of your workload.

"I have had a few extremely late nights trying to get everything done because I didn't allocate time correctly during the week," he said.

If his overemployment regularly required him to work 60-plus hour weeks, he said it wouldn't be sustainable.

Going forward, George said he plans to continue taking Zepbound, but that he's open to trying a different drug if it's more affordable. He has no plans to give up his overemployment, in large part because it's made his recent weight loss journey possible.

"If one contract ends for some reason, I will definitely be seeking another to replace it," he said.

Most people want hybrid jobs —these remote work positions may surprise you

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

According to FlexJobs , a job finding agency for remote and flexible work, 95% of people want some sort of work from home, whether hybrid or full.

On the heels of that finding, they released their Top 100 list of top companies for remote work in 2024. Some of the primo companies may surprise you: CVS Health, Williams-Sonoma, New York Life, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Zillow, to name a few.

Middle Eastern Lady Using Laptop Working Online Sitting In Office.

But the enduring and dramatic shift toward remote work isn’t surprising industry insiders.

“Even the most reluctant hybrid employers have now mostly accepted that some degree of remote work is here to stay, especially if you have to compete for any sort of skilled or scarce employees,” said Alexandra Samuel, Ph.D. and co-author of “Remote, Inc.: How to Thrive at Work … Wherever You Are” (Harper Business, 2021).

Jared Brown, co-founder and CEO of Hubstaff , a remote workforce management platform, echoed that sentiment.

“In the coming years, I predict that we’ll see an even greater surge in remote job opportunities, with more industries recognizing the value and feasibility of remote work,” the Atlanta entrepreneur said. “This shift will be powered by advancements in technology that make remote collaboration more seamless and by a growing workforce demand for flexibility and autonomy.”

Companies that adapt to this trend and invest in remote-friendly policies and technologies will lead the market, attracting top talent from around the globe, he predicted.

FlexJobs is seeing firsthand just how much the tide is changing.

“Historically, fields like computer and IT and accounting/finance had the most remote job openings, as the type of tasks required for these roles lend themselves really well to working from home,” said Toni Frana, M.S., lead career expert at FlexJobs, based in Niceville, Fla. “But since the pandemic, we’ve seen many other fields, such as medical and health, operations, customer service and administrative, increase the number of remote positions offered.”

Per Frana, the accessibility of remote work has also created more opportunities across various career and education levels, pointing to WFH offerings on its site across experienced (64%), manager (19%), senior (12%) and entry (5%) levels. (You can also scope out remote jobs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree on the site.)

FlexJobs survey data found that 63% say remote work is the most important aspect of their job, even over salary (61%) and having a good boss (48%).

Frana shares that FlexJobs research shows there are some WFH-friendly jobs most people may not think of as an immediate fit, like culinary specialist, wildfire resilience environmental project manager, veterinary technician, psychiatric nurse practitioner and speech language pathologist.

“While these types of roles haven’t always been the norm, it demonstrates the demand for and expansion of remote work across new industries,” she said.

Musk believes working in the office boosts productivity.

Along those lines, Brown shares that roles like virtual health care providers, online educators, remote legal consultants and remote lab technicians are becoming increasingly common. “These positions challenge the traditional notion that certain jobs require a physical presence,” he said.

Samuel pinpoints health care as one of the most interesting remote fields to watch “because it’s one of the very few places where the ability to work remotely is limited among high-wage and high-status employees,” like doctors and physicians’ assistants.

By contrast, in many fields we see middle and upper managers with hybrid or remote flexibility, said Samuel, and frontline workers like retail, manufacturing or service workers feeling resentful they don’t get that flexibility.

Never miss a story.

Samuel believes the move toward remote health care will be sticking around for the long haul. She cites online therapy, for instance, as becoming so omnipresent that it’s transforming the way mental health services are delivered. Even in more niche applications in mental health, telehealth is becoming more commonplace: “I would never have imagined that behavioral supports for autistic kids could be delivered online, but they are,” Samuel said.

We’re only at the tip of the iceberg, per Brown. “This broadening of fields reflects a growing recognition of the efficiency and effectiveness of remote work across different sectors,” he said. “The expansion of remote work into various fields is set to continue, and accelerate, breaking more traditional barriers.”

Brown foresees a future where even more sectors, like manufacturing and science, find innovative ways to incorporate remote work into their operations.

If you’re interested in exploring more unconventional remote careers, Brown recommends resources such as Remote.co , and We Work Remotely , coupled with “upskilling” through online courses on platforms like Coursera , Udemy and LinkedIn Learning .

When considering a career in any field, Frana stressed the importance of starting by researching the requirements of the job. “For example, there may be unexpected licensing requirements for certain health care roles, like nurse practitioners or speech language pathologists, whereas the role as a culinary specialist may have more general, experience-heavy needs,” she said.

Don’t overlook having a competitive résumé and cover letter.

“If you’re someone looking to make a career change, it’s especially critical to highlight your transferable skills to the role. With remote roles specifically, highlighting your technology knowledge, strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills is an excellent practice,” said Frana.

Frana also states that building resilience throughout your career is a key strategy to success in any future job searches, especially remote jobs. “Always ensuring you have an updated résumé with your latest work achievements will help you hit the ground running if and when you decide to make a change,” she said.

“Upskilling and staying on top of the latest trends and advancements in your field will make you a stronger candidate when you apply to jobs, and it shows employers you aren’t afraid to take initiative.”

Finally, continuously building relationships and networking is a career strategy that Frana says will never go out of style. So go ahead, and treat that career mentor to a coffee — whether virtual or in the flesh.

Remote work searches are up, but for the most part, flexibility offered by employers is not matching ... [+] the demand

Searches for "remote work" have spiked over the past five years, with a 217% steep increase in Google searches for this work model, according to Google data monitoring remote work search activity from March 2019.

This year, and the latter part of 2023 has seen remote work searches peak at their highest ever to date. It's clear that this is a pressing concern for many workers and those who are already out of work.

In fact, a 2022 McKinsey study demonstrated that after greater pay or career progression opportunities, the desire for flexible working (i.e. remote work) was listed as a top reason for workers switching jobs. This requirement even came ahead of preferences such as health insurance, predictable working hours, a team/manager that is motivating and exciting to work with, and sustainability.

All of this comes at a time when more employers are enforcing RTO mandates (return to office), and some that once assured their employees during the pandemic that they would be able to continuously work from home, are now reneging. News of executives demanding their employees to work from the office two, three, or more days a week are dominating headlines.

Companies Hiring For Remote Jobs

Against this backdrop, it can be refreshing to find companies who are still presently hiring for work from home jobs. Below is compiled a list of companies, according to new analysis from FlexJobs, who are not only hiring for remote jobs, but have roles that yield six-figure annual incomes. A few salaries reach as far as more than $400,000—nearly half a million.

Therefore, to have a favorable chance of securing roles like these, you need to:

1. Develop Relevant Skills

Depending on the specific role you're targeting, ensure you continuously add to your skill set and refine your knowledge and expertise by taking courses, obtaining certifications, and gaining practical experience through projects at your current workplace or as a freelancer.

2. Build a Strong Resume

A one-size-fits all resume will hardly cut it to secure roles like the ones listed above. Tailor your resume to highlight your relevant experiences, and key achievements and skills that align with the job's requirements. And wherever possible, quantify your accomplishments to demonstrate impact.

3. Leverage Your Network

Build a professional network online and offline—specifically within your target industry, to explore job opportunities, seek advice, and gain insights into the company and role you're applying for. If you follow the employer on LinkedIn it will add an impetus to your application and be highlighted to the recruiter, should you choose to apply for one of their roles via LinkedIn. You can also connect to their employees and ask them about what it's like working at the company, and ask more about the role itself.

4. Showcase Your Expertise

Build a strong reputation for yourself as a go-to expert in your field, by sharing your insights, projects, and achievements on platforms such as LinkedIn or GitHub, or even a personal blog—or a combination of all three. When you demonstrate your knowledge and passion, you are establishing a powerful digital footprint that can attract the attention of hiring managers and recruiters alike.

5. Highlight The Right Skills

Finally, remember to research the company to understand their culture, values, and expectations, in addition to researching the skills requirements for the role you are applying for. And if it's a leadership or technical role, remember to prepare specific examples of your leadership potential and problem-solving abilities, emphasizing soft skills such as communication and adaptability in interviews and application forms.

Build a strong digital footprint and be proactive with your search

By following these strategies and being proactive in your search, you can landing a high-paying remote job, such as the roles with the companies listed above, and set up your career for long-term success.

Chief Officer salary survey 2023 26 September 2023

chief officer chief officer salary survey crew salary survey superyacht salaries

A survey of over 100 Chief Officers has uncovered the latest trends in salary, leave and bonus packages for Chief Officers working onboard 40m to 100m+ superyachts.

The analysis, carried out by crew recruitment agency, Quay Crew, contains detailed comparisons between yacht size and usage and also explores whether length of time in the role and ticket level has an impact.

The key findings are:

  • The current average salary across all yacht sizes for a Chief Officer is €8,475, with solely private yachts paying 11% more than private/charter yachts.
  • 72.5% are time for time rotational roles.
  • Over half (54%) get annual pay rises, but only 16% are contractual, while 30% are inconsistent and unpredictable.
  • The most common pay rise amount when given is between 2.1 and 5% of their previous salary (43%).
  • Over half of Chief Officers receive a 13th-month bonus while 21% get random and unpredictable bonuses. 14% get no bonus at all.
  • A third have been in the role between 1 and 3 years, followed by 24% who have 5 to 7 years’ experience. Just 12% have more than 7 years’ experience as a Chief Officer.
  • 47% hold a Master Unlimited or Master 3000 ticket at the highest level, while the same amount have achieved Chief Mate 3000 or Chief Mate Unlimited at the highest level.
  • The average age of a Chief Officer is 30 – although the age that people first become a Chief Officer has increased by around 18 months.

Tom Rose, Officer Consultant and Team Leader at Quay Crew, commented:

“As with any salary survey in any industry, there are always exceptions and this is no different in yachting. There are clearly some outliers across all yacht size brackets which can skew the averages somewhat.

“However overall, the average salary of €8,475 is extremely healthy and the fact that almost three-quarters of the Chief Officers surveyed are receiving time for time rotation is also very positive.

“Having said that, these findings are not necessarily indicative of the jobs being recruited for of late, with a shortage of rotational roles becoming available. This is certainly down to Chief Officers committing to those yachts offering such packages and staying onboard long-term.

“When comparing private only and private/charter yachts, Chief Officers are two-thirds more likely to receive a contractual annual pay rise onboard a private yacht compared to those that charter as well.

“Drilling down into yacht size comparisons, the biggest salary uplift is from a 60-69m and 70-79m yacht (10%). Salaries then drop 4% drop when Chief Officers step up to 80-89m but all get 3:1 or time for time rotation whereas one in five roles onboard 70-79m are full time.

“One interesting observation is that the average age crew are taking on their first Chief Officer role is going up. This could be that crew are joining the industry later or that there are limited progression opportunities onboard some yachts to step up.”

chief officer salary 2

Tim Clarke, Director at Quay Crew, commented:

“One statistic that leaps out at us is that over a third (34%) of Chief Officers surveyed have been in the role for more than five years without stepping up to Captain. Anecdotally, getting your first drive position is the most challenging, so while this report highlights some average packages, it’s arguably more important to find a well-run boat that will support your goals.

Longevity is key, as is building a good relationship with the Captain, owner and management company, if applicable. Skipping jobs to earn a couple of hundred Euros more may not benefit your career in the long term.

Generally speaking, Chief Officer jobs are good at the moment, but if you want to know what you need to do to make the transition to Captain as easy as possible, we’d be happy to advise.”

Would you want to be a communications assistant to the royals right now?

working on superyachts salary

LONDON — Would anyone want to be doing communications for the British royal family right now? Well, they’re hiring.

The Royal Household — responsible for supporting members of the British royal family — is seeking a communications assistant. The responsibilities for the role, advertised online in recent days, include responding to media inquiries about the work of royal family members and producing social media updates.

What seemed like an ordinary job posting gained huge online attention, as the royal family faces a media crisis — and is unable to shake the firestorm of conspiracy theories regarding the health and whereabouts of Catherine, the Princess of Wales.

“They don’t need a communications assistant, they need a crisis communications specialist who can deliver difficult and sensitive messages. And they need to pay that person way more than this!” Alannah Arrington, a communications specialist in Virginia, posted on X , referring to the posted salary of 25,642.50 pounds per year (about $32,500).

Some joked that they would do the job unpaid just to find out what was going on amid a frenzy over Catherine that’s now known as “Kate-gate” in the United Kingdom. According to the LinkedIn post, at least 100 people have already applied for the position.

While this job is posted for Buckingham Palace — and not Kensington Palace, the official London residence of Prince William and Catherine — the posting notes that the royal communications team members promote “the work, role, relevance and value of the Royal Family to a worldwide audience.” Buckingham Palace on Thursday declined to offer any further details on the job posting.

Many on social media noted that the recent drama speaks to how high stakes managing the image of the royal family can be, a theme the job posting itself also stressed . “The reaction to our work is always high-profile, and so reputation and impact will be at the forefront of all that you do,” it said.

While the palace has said that Catherine, who was last seen at a public engagement in December, was recovering at home after planned abdominal surgery, questions about “where is Kate?” have gripped much of the nation in recent weeks and made international headlines.

The interest in Catherine devolved into a complete media crisis when the royals released a photo of the princess and her children on Mother’s Day earlier this month, only for it to be retracted by global news agencies as it emerged the picture had been edited, in breach of their editorial standards.

Catherine later issued an apology for any “confusion” after editing the photo, which only fueled more conspiracy theories.

Interest is so high that Britain’s privacy and data protection watchdog said Wednesday that it was assessing a potential breach of Catherine’s medical records during her stay at a private London hospital. Britain’s opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on Thursday urged people to leave the princess alone.

According to the London-based job advertisement, key responsibilities of the communications assistant include assisting senior colleagues with “proactive and reactive communications,” facilitating “media access to Royal engagements at Royal residences and other locations” and providing “logistical support to the media and the Royal Communications team.”

It also states the individual will likely work on state visits, ceremonial events and royal engagements. The role also requires some travel within the United Kingdom — which entered a recession last year. Across the country people have grappled with rising costs of food and fuel, though Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said this week he is hopeful 2024 will be the year “the economy bounces back.”

Scores of people on social media slammed the palace for not paying more generously — especially at a time when all eyes are on Britain’s royal household. Some noted that the pay was “not very much, considering the PR stress” the royals have navigated in recent weeks and the economic challenges Britons face.

The pay, for a 37.5-hour workweek, is more than the United Kingdom’s typical national minimum wage, which would equate to about 20,300 pounds per year ($25,720). It appears to be on par with many U.K. government roles for early career officials, where administrative assistants can earn about 21,380 pounds ($27,087) per year. Many public sector jobs pay less than their private sector counterparts, but come with decent pension programs or vacation days.

The job advertisement boasts of “a generous benefits package,” including complimentary lunch on-site at Buckingham Palace and at least 25 days annual leave. Employees are also offered a 20 percent discount at Royal Collection Trust Shop , which sells myriad items including traditional jams and marmalades.

And those who want to work at Buckingham Palace, but aren’t sure about braving the press, don’t have to lose heart either — the royal household is actively recruiting for other roles there, including a pastry sous chef and a furniture conservator.
