EYOS EXPERTISE

To help create the ideal globally-capable expedition yacht, EYOS Expeditions took over 150 design criteria to DAMEN shipyard. Working with DAMEN’s design team, EYOS advised on details from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements.

SeaXplorer was the first yacht built to meet the new Polar Code Standards, which came into force in 2017. While her entire hull is ice-strengthened, in the most challenging ice conditions, SeaXplorer can go astern using a specially shaped icebreaking stern to break through boundaries that stop other yachts.

Damen Yachting lays the keel on first SeaXplorer 60

Damen Yachting has celebrated a major construction milestone as the shipyard lays the keel on its in-build SeaXplorer 60.

The yard unveiled the 60 metre addition to its SeaXplorer luxury expedition range in September 2021 and is the fourth SeaXplorer built by Damen Yachting. The laying of the keel marks the vessel's first major milestone and she is due for delivery in 2024.

SeaXplorer design manager Enrique Tintore said that the 60 metre expedition vessel is a "yacht for all seasons". "It's very exciting to be here, after all the months of detailed engineering, to see the SeaXplorer 60 beginning to take shape. It's a fantastic layout with a lot of flexibility."

British design studio H2 Yacht Design was enlisted to create the yacht's interiors. Design director Jonny Horsfield revealed that the studio drew on its experience of designing the interiors of high-profile expedition superyachts such as Andromeda , Victorious and REV to design the SeaXplorer 60.

“The functionality of an explorer yacht is quite different from a yacht used in the Mediterranean,” Horsfield explained. “It’s less about entertaining and sitting around – it’s about being on the move and living on the boat.” The result, he said, is an interior that is “more homely, more practical and more maintenance-free”.

In fact, H2 focused on drawing the client’s attention to the outside view, rather than the interior decoration.  “It’s more about what you’re looking at outside so we wanted the interior to be as simple and calming as possible.” Materials are therefore “neutral”, he said, and include the likes of satin matt wood finishing and leather for a “simple and clean” effect.

The H2 team focused on the functionality of the yacht, making sure that each space on board could be used for multiple purposes.

The observation lounge, which features “a warm, cosier and darker wood on the walls”, is a key example. This room can be used as an observation lounge in the day and turned into a snug, multimedia room or cinema at night. The 150sqm helideck too doubles up as a party deck while the covered outdoor space aft of the main deck can be used as a luxury cabana lounge and bar, dive deck, fitness and wellness zone, or even a ski lodge depending on the owner’s wishes.

Another key feature is an abundance of shelving throughout the boat to allow owners to display tokens from their travels. “The idea is that when you’re travelling, you’re collecting things so we’ve purposefully allowed for a lot of shelving so that owners can display their travels," Horsfield said. 

Elsewhere, the interior is defined by a balance of crisp, straight lines and more forgiving curves. H2 design director Gianluca Sist explained: “The straight lines are more masculine and more modern but then you have the curved lines which soften the interior.”

The 1,160GT interior features accommodation for a total of 12 guests in six cabins while the hybrid propulsion package and extensive storage will allow guests to spend up to 30 days of uninterrupted, autonomous cruising on board.

An ice-class hull, IMO Polar Code compliant engineering and exterior design penned by Azure Yacht Design rounds up the SeaXplorer 60.

The 60 metre model follows in the footsteps of the first SeaXplorer, the 62 metre Anawa , and SeaXplorer 77 La Datcha . An in-build custom 58 metre SeaXplorer is due for delivery in 2022.

Damen Yachting builds new 60-metre SeaXplorer expedition yacht on spec

Damen Yachting has revealed its latest addition to the SeaXplorer range of luxury expedition yachts. The first SeaXplorer 60, featuring hybrid propulsion, is now under construction for delivery in 2024. AS yet, there is no owner for the yacht.

After months of intensive design, the new SeaXplorer 60 is now fully engineered and steel cutting will take place at Damen Yachting’s building facility. By starting the SeaXplorer build up front, Damen Yachting is following its successful Amels Limited Editions approach by offering reliable, customisable luxury explorers with the shortest delivery times on the market.

‘Since introducing our SeaXplorer concept in 2015, Damen Yachting has become well-established as the luxury explorer leader,’says Rose Damen, managing director. ‘But we expect the future will see even more owners demanding the autonomy, safety and flexibility that the SeaXplorer offers. That’s why we decided to build the SeaXplorer 60 on spec for fast delivery in 2024. She is the only luxury explorer yacht available in her class and an amazing opportunity.’

Particulars and options

The new SeaXplorer design is a crossover innovation of Amels pedigree with Damen shipbuilding knowhow. At 1160 gross tonnage, the explorer yacht features large volume luxury interiors and lots of expedition capability, including wide customisation possibilities for tropical, polar and all sorts of adventures in between. Its particulars are:

• Length overall: 60.00 metres (197 ft)
• Beam overall (at hull): 11.00 metres (36 ft)
• Draught (full load): 3.60 metres
• Gross tonnage: 1160
• Maximum speed: 14.5 knots
• Range @ 11.5 knots: 5000 nautical miles
• Crew: 16 + Captain

The helideck, when not in use for helicopter operations, can be used as a 150 square-metre party deck, suitable for up to 100 guests or alternatively as a basketball half-court. Below the helideck, the SeaXplorer 60 has a flexible configuration for a big range of tenders up to 10.5 metres in length, a submarine, snowmobiles, jetskis or sailboats. The covered outdoor space, in total 195 square metres, offers the versatility to create a luxury cabana lounge and bar, dive deck, fitness and wellness zone or ski lodge, depending on the owner’s requirements.

Hybrid propulsion

Based on the SeaXplorer deliveries to date, the SeaXplorer 60 offers proven performance and value. Damen Yachting’s partner Azure Yacht Design created the exterior design. Together with its operational design partner, EYOS Expeditions, Damen Yachting has engineered the SeaXplorer with expedition experience from the field. The yacht has hybrid power and propulsion with battery banks, a fully certified helideck, Ice Class and IMO Polar Code compliant engineering. Its stores and tanks allow for up to thirty days of autonomous and safe operations in isolation without port call.

For the SeaXplorer 60’s luxury interiors, Damen Yachting asked designer Jonny Horsfield and his London-based team at H2 Design to create a custom concept. Damen Yachting takes care of the naval architecture.

The SeaXplorer 60 is the latest new build from the SeaXplorer range of luxury expedition yachts. The first SeaXplorer, 62-metre Anawa, was followed by 77-metre La Datcha in 2020 and by the custom 58-metre SeaXplorer in build for delivery to its owner in 2022.

The SeaXplorer team at Damen Yachting has unveiled the latest design from the Dutch builder’s award-winning range of luxury expedition yachts. The first SeaXplorer 60, featuring hybrid propulsion, is now under construction for delivery in 2024.

Vripack 60M Expedition Motor Yacht presented by Derecktor

US-based shipyard Derecktor has teamed-up with the design talents of Vripack to create a “ground-breaking” 61 metre yacht project with extreme seaworthiness and an excellent range.

Spread over seven levels of living space, the superyacht accommodates 14 guests and a crew of between 14 and 16 members. Although a private owner’s deck is included in the overall design, the exact number of cabins and the interior design are at the discretion of the owner.

Long-term, unrestricted transoceanic voyaging was the design focus of the expedition super yacht and thus Vripack’s naval architects gave her a round-bilge displacement hull with flared blow, transom stern and straight, even keel to ensure optimal seakeeping, speed and fuel efficiency.

With enhanced scantlings on her hull, the motor yacht will be able to operate in arctic conditions despite her not being Ice Class.

Vripack Sales Director Marnix J. Hoekstra said Derecktor was the perfect choice for constructing the superyacht.

The new 60-metre (197ft) Explorer yacht by Virgin Concept Yachts was designed with ocean-going explorer layout, which combines amenities of a luxury yacht with the requirements needed for vessels undertaking global voyages and extended self-sufficient operations in remote areas, while reducing their ecological footprint by as much as possible.

The yacht was designed by Edwin Vandermark and boasts timeless, modern design with powerful, yet elegant lines, turning heads wherever she might appear. There is a spacious tender garage aboard, accommodating tenders, a mini submarine and a variety of water toys, such as jet skis and sailing dinghies.

The aft deck boasts vast relaxation areas for sunbathing as well as the popular spa pool. The stern converts into a large open ‘beach club’, offering various sport and recreational opportunities for guests on board.

At the bow, the high foredeck typical of large expedition yachts is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing. The near-vertical shape of the bow is to benefit from a longer water line as well as of a considerably enlarged living area – and it is one of the most striking layout attributes of the 60m design.

The Viken Group and AES Yacht partner on 60m expedition yacht Mimer

The Viken Group has partnered with Turkish shipyard AES yacht to  build  a new 60m (197ft) expedition yacht. Mimer will be designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden (a Viken Group company), with AES Yacht handling the technical specifications.

Antonio Romano, commercial director, The Viken Group said the firm chose Kocaeli-based AES Yacht to build the vessel based on previous projects with Hot Lab (another Viken Group superyacht design firm).

“We have chosen this shipyard because it has one of the largest facilities in Turkey with very experienced naval architects and engineers. They can provide everything in-house, from steel and metal construction to furniture and interior,” said Romano.

Another important factor in the decision was that the shipyard has the capacity, available slots and can build it in 36 months once an owner signs a contract, he added.

The design team has developed three different core designs with a helicopter pad and a myriad of tenders and toys. With the average age of superyacht owners decreasing, Tillberg Design said the team’s “ target client ” is in their 30s or early 40s.

According to Daniel Nerhagen, partner and yacht director, Tillberg Design of Sweden, 60m is the new 50, making Mimer ideal for an introduction to explorer yachting. Any smaller and you would have to compromise on space for expedition tenders and toys and any larger and you move into a different (and more expensive) category of yacht.

Sustainability has played a key role in the design too. Nerhagen said that Mimer not only has hybrid and alternative power and propulsion options but will also use recycled and recyclable materials, local products, eco-friendly antifouling and measures to protect biodiversity.

“Sustainability is something we have been working on with commercial projects for a very long time now, and for us as Scandinavians it’s not a trend, it’s just something you do and it’s very much in our culture,” said Nerhagen.

“The feeling we are after is to feel at home – it has to be comfy,” Nerhagen added. “There shouldn’t be lots of bells and whistles and bling, because it should be somewhere you feel calm and relaxed. I think with Mimer we have really captured that.”

If a buyer is found soon, the yacht could be delivered in early as 2026.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
