An apparent crew member of a riverboat in Alabama became a breakout internet sensation after he swam to the rescue of a co-worker who was being attacked by a group of pontoon boaters.

For his efforts, he’s been dubbed “Black Aquaman,” among a series of other nicknames.

Riverboat fight videos explode online

The viral drama went down Saturday night in Montgomery, Alabama, and according to a series of videos and reports, a group of boaters refused to remove their pontoon boat from a pier where the city’s riverboat, the Harriot II, was supposed to dock.

Watching from the riverboat, a number of people began chanting the lyrics “Move, Bitch,” a popular song by Ludacris, at the pontoon boaters, ratcheting up the tense environment.

Attempting to move the pontoon himself, a Black staffer was then assaulted by the white group.

As the fight played out, one of the crew members appears to have leaped off the riverboat and swum to the dock to aid in the fight.

The crew members of the riverboard, along with others on the boat after it docked, then went to confront the owners of the pontoon boat, where another skirmish broke out.

In it, what appears to be a crew member of the riverboat throws a woman into the water, as police struggle to contain the situation.

The crew members and the boaters have yet to be identified, and Montgomery police say they are investigating the matter and will file the appropriate charges. The riverboat fight videos apparently helped lead to multiple arrests, according to Montgomery news outlet WSFA .

Update: Several days later, three men were charged with assault in the 3rd degree. Richard Roberts, a 48-year-old white male; Allen Todd, a 23-year-old white male; and Zachary Shipman, 25 year-old white male.

Mayor vows justice after massive brawl breaks out on Alabama riverfront

Multiple video clips of a brawl on the riverfront in Montgomery, Alabama, went viral on social media Sunday night, and the mayor reacted with a vow that justice would prevail.

Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed said in a statement Sunday that several people involved in the fighting Saturday evening have been detained.

"Justice will be served," he said.

NBC affiliate WSFA of Montgomery reported that four arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the altercation.

It appears to show brawling that split combatants along racial lines. The fighting appeared to follow a riverboat's attempt to dock where a pontoon boat was moored.

A man who was apparently from the riverboat walked to the pontoon and exchanged words with someone, precipitating an all-out brawl between people associated with each of the watercraft.

Reed indicated that the man from the riverboat was attacked and that those who committed violence against him would face the justice system.

"The Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job," he said.

Police told WSFA that the fight was reported at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The city's Riverfront along the Alabama River is a summertime draw that features the riverboat, an amphitheater, a stadium and a park, among other attractions.

WATCH: Massive Riverfront Brawl in Alabama Leads to Multiple Arrests

A Saturday night melee along a river in Montgomery, Alabama that exploded after a group of white boaters reportedly challenged a Black riverboat worker has led to several arrests, according to authorities.

The Montgomery Police Department said that “several” people had been detained after the brawl broke out at Riverfront Park around 7 p.m. Police confirmed to WSFA on Sunday afternoon that there were four active warrants in the case, with more possibly to come as the department’s investigation continues.

Witnesses told the station and several other local outlets that the fight was sparked by a pontoon boat blocking a riverboat’s dock space. “That area is the regular spot reserved for the Harriott II Riverboat,” the Montgomery Advertiser reported.

Do you comprehend the historic gravity of a Black man swimming from a riverboat to a Montgomery Alabama dock to help his fellow man run some white men’s fade?! pic.twitter.com/1xMUqjm5SZ — Old Atlanna (@ATLboneNbred) August 6, 2023

In footage that circulated on social media in the aftermath of the tumult, a Black man can be seen standing on the dock, apparently attempting to unmoor the pontoon.

“Those guys who parked there were told not to leave it there and they left it there,” the woman filming, a guest on the riverboat cruise, can be heard saying. She identifies the man as a member of the cruise’s crew.

“So he’s just pushing it off,” the woman narrates. “That’s funny. Took matters into his own hands. I love it.” In the background of the video, other guests and crew members can be heard shouting in encouragement.

Several white men then approach the crew member, and an inaudible verbal confrontation begins, lasting several minutes.

As the men continue to argue, people on the boat can be heard yelling chants including, “Knock his ass out, Damien!” and “Get the fuck out the way!” The people aboard the riverboat then begin chanting the lyrics to “Move Bitch.”

Eventually, one of the men in the pontoon group shoves the crew member back. The crew member throws his hat away and the pair begin exchanging blows.

In another video, onlookers can be heard screaming, with one watching from the river yelling, “Y’all help that brother!” Several other people then rush in to join the fight, including a Black man who jumps into the water from a boat and swims to the dock.

The man in the water was identified by a family publicist on Sunday night only as a 16-year-old named Aaren. Calling him a “cherished young hero,” the publicist said in a statement posted to Facebook that Aaren “selflessly came to the rescue of a fellow colleague, showing courage beyond his years.”

According to a third video of the incident, the fight appears to momentarily deescalate soon after Aaren reaches the dock, only for it to scale up again, becoming a full-on brawl as the riverboat docks and roughly a dozen other employees go ashore.

Within moments, men and women, both Black and white, can be seen kicking, punching, eye-gouging, and wrestling each other. A person is at one point thrown into the water, while elsewhere a man finds a folding chair and starts bashing people over the head with it. Security officers can be seen attempting to break various sections of the fight up.

Law enforcement officers who arrived on the scene soon after handcuffed several people, including the man with the folding chair. The detained suspects’ names have not been released, and charges against those involved in the fight were pending on Sunday, according to the Montgomery Police Department.

In a Sunday afternoon statement, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said, “Last night, the Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job. Warrants have been signed and justice will be served. This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred.”

A screengrab from a large brawl that broke out in Alabama

Large brawl in Alabama as people defend Black riverboat worker against white assailants

Fight appeared to start when a worker objected to a pontoon boat preventing a larger river boat from docking, and was attacked by a group of white men

A dramatic brawl on the Montgomery, Alabama , riverfront pitted people standing up for a Black riverboat worker against a group of white people who began beating him for telling them to move their illegally parked pontoon.

The Saturday night fight, which was captured in multiple videos posted to social media, appeared to unfold largely along racial lines. And many social media users celebrated footage of the riverfront dust-up, which showed the white assailants get the tables turned on them by Black people who rushed to the riverboat worker’s aid.

“This is not … 1963 anymore,” read one comment, alluding to the year before the signing of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of race.

Montgomery police confirmed they responded to reports of a disturbance on the 200 block of Coosa Street in the area of the Montgomery riverfront park. They said officers had “located a large group of subjects engaged in a physical altercation”.

“Several subjects have been detained, and any charges are pending,” a police statement added, without elaborating.

The brawl appeared to start when a pontoon boat prevented a larger river boat from docking. When a Black riverboat worker objected, he was attacked by a group of white men .

The conflict escalated when a group of about six Black men from the riverboat confronted the white party. Cheered on by bystanders, they beat three white men and two women, at least one of whom could be seen first striking others by running up and throwing her body into them from behind.

At least two of the women jumped or were pushed into the river. A third was beaten over the head with a folding chair, video showed.

After the arrival of police officers, the brawl subsided – and then briefly reignited before police began cuffing the participants, Black and white.

NBC station WSFA of Montgomery reported that four arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the altercation and “there’s a possibility more will follow after the review of additional video”.

Police also appealed to the public for help in determining what had happened.

after newsletter promotion

Montgomery’s mayor, Steven Reed, said in a statement on Sunday that several people involved in the fighting on Saturday evening have been detained.

“Justice will be served,” he said. “This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred.”

As authorities try to untangle the incident, a man who was seen swimming across the river to the aid of the riverboat worker was partly identified as “Aaren”.

“In the face of adversity, Aaren selflessly came to the rescue of a fellow colleague, showcasing courage beyond his years,” a statement from his publicist, Makina Lashea, read.

An update on the investigation is expected on Monday afternoon.

A photo of the Hubbard Inn, with lots of natural dark wood, chairs, and floors.

Six days after a 22-year-old TikTok user accused the staff at a River North bar of shoving her down a flight of stairs, the ownership of the Hubbard Inn has filed a lawsuit against Julia Reel, claiming her video defamed the venue and negatively impacted business with a flood of critical online reviews and canceled reservations.

In a now-deleted TikTok post, Reel said a bouncer sent her “flying down the staircase.” The lawsuit, filed Monday in Cook County court, claims the video was shared more than 100,000 times.

“I’m just pushed down. He sends me flying down the staircase,” Reel said in a now-deleted video on TikTok. It even led to an entry on Know Your Meme , a popular website dedicated to chronicling Internet culture. Notable Internet accounts have picked up on the controversy, labeled Reel a “Karen,” and noted she’s taken down her social media profiles.

Even before their lawsuit, management at Hubbard Inn struck back with their own video posted on March 14 that attempted to refute Reel’s claims with security camera footage. It’s been liked more than 233,000 times: “Below is footage of Ms. Reel walking down the stairs toward the exit. She was politely escorted off the premises, ensuring a safe exit,” captions in the bar’s video read.

The lawsuit claims Hubbard Inn repeatedly asked Reel to take down her post after staff received violent threats. She was also invited to view their security footage.

Reel and Hubbard Inn owner Carmen Rossi declined comment to the Sun-Times . In this age of social media, Reel’s attorneys released their own TikTok video that described the Hubbard Inn’s response as “self serving” and that Reel suffered a concussion and visible lacerations. The statement urged the public to avoid “a rush to judgment and/or victim shaming.”

Reel filed a police report, according to the Sun-Times . The report states she visited the hospital and was treated for a “bruised up arm and head,” which struck the floor. There’s no mention of a concussion in the report.

According to the report, a security guard pulled Reel out of a restroom stall while she was urinating and said, “We know what you are doing,” and before she could fully dress, she was pushed toward the exit.

Rossi, himself an attorney — with a strong social media presence — was fined in 2023 for violating lobbying rules, according to the Sun-Times .

Influencer culture is a complicated one in the world of restaurants. Author J. Kenji Lopez-Alt ignited a conversation last week on Instagram over “pay-to-play” tactics, the practice of restaurants paying for meals or drinks in exchange for positive social media posts with the hope of attracting customers. The Hubbard Inn’s video response was unique — often chefs and owners don’t fare well in responding to negative reviews online. Of course, not all influencers operate in that matter, and it’s easy to paint with broad strokes. One restaurant owner tells Eater that while many venues don’t have a video production team or the time to respond to influencers, the public may see more of this in the future.

Officials said Miami Fire Rescue personnel recovered Johnson’s body from the bottom of the river.

“They subsequently provided CPR, but were unable to revive him,” the report states. “He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.”

LIVE: Gov. DeSantis holds news conference with Miami Beach mayor, House speaker

2 river flood warnings in effect for brantley and glynn counties, ‘certified gang member’ identified as 1 of the shooters in jacksonville beach likely to be critical witness.

Tarik Minor , Anchor, I-TEAM reporter

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – One of the people involved in one of three shootings at Jacksonville Beach on Sunday has been identified by police as a “certified gang member.”

A certified gang member is someone police have previously arrested and charged with some kind of gang-related crime.

According to News4JAX Crime and Safety Expert Tom Hackney, this gang member in particular was forced to make the tough decision to go to the hospital after being shot, fully realizing the weight of surrendering himself to doctors and police.

“‘Am I going to live, or am I going to go get treatment for the gunshot wound?’ understanding the ramifications of that are, and apparently that’s what happened in this case,” Hackney said.

Hackney has decades of experience in law enforcement and was previously the director of investigations in Jacksonville. He said the person currently in police custody is likely the most critical witness to Sunday night’s shooting incidents — which killed one person and injured three others — in the busy downtown bar district of Jacksonville Beach.

RELATED | Timeline of St. Patrick’s Day shootings in Jacksonville Beach

News4JAX asked Hackney about the prevalence of local crime directly related to gang activity, and just how many gangs he suspects are operating within the Jacksonville area.

“There’s probably about 55 gangs here in Jacksonville with maybe 500 members loosely, some that you can’t put the certified tag on, but may be tied to the certified gang members, but what the unfortunate thing is of those 55 gangs, they are responsible for so much of the city’s violent crime,” Hackney said.

Police said drug-related shootings and domestic violence crimes make up another large portion of the gun violence tied to gang activity in the River City.

Police in Jacksonville Beach have not said if the multiple shootings on Sunday are gang-related. But Hackney said behind the scenes, police are looking into every possibility, and using gang members’ social media footprint to their advantage.

“Fortunately, for law enforcement, a lot of these gang members will put their information out there, be it from YouTube or rap videos, where they talk about their involvement, and show pictures of themselves and others with other known gang members which is a piece of becoming a certified gang member. So, if you’re doing things with those that are certified gang members, and wearing certain colors that are associated with gangs, that helps law enforcement as well,” Hackney said.

Jacksonville Beach Police have not identified the person they have in custody and it’s possible they may not for quite some time.

According to Hackney, police oftentimes keep this kind of sensitive gang information to themselves for the time being, while they work to identify everyone involved in Sunday’s violence.

After a three-year hiatus, Fooq’s , the popular Downtown Miami Mediterranean restaurant that shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic , is set to reopen at a new space in Little River. This relocation marks a substantial expansion from its 2015 inception, boasting a new 9,000-square-foot facility.

“Having Fooq’s back in Miami is more than just reopening a restaurant, it’s a homecoming,” says Foulquier, whose restaurant group includes Michelin-Starred restaurants Sushi Noz and Noz 17 and Eleventh Street Pizza

Joyn Studio, a Swedish design firm known for its work with many of the World’s 50 Best restaurants, will design the new Fooq’s interior. The interiors will complement Fooq’s heritage, showcasing Middle Eastern and Moroccan influences with a contemporary nod, spanning across two floors, and include an outdoor lounge area.

The menu will continue to feature popular dishes, such as charcoal-grilled kebabs and Persian stews, paired with new creations inspired by Foulquier’s travels. Additionally, a comprehensive bar program will be part of the new location’s menu, expanding on its extensive (and returning) wine selection.

Scheduled to open by the end of 2024, Fooq’s will offer lunch, brunch, and dinner daily. The venue, located at 150 NW 73rd Street, plans to feature entertainment on selected evenings in its second-level and outdoor lounge areas. Check out the forthcoming restaurant renderings below.

There are so many stories of environmental tragedy and historical malfeasance against the Indigenous people of this land, but we owe it to both this country’s past and future to listen to them all. Mary Mazzio ’s “Bad River” has some production elements that frustrated me, but it tells an important story, another call to think about not only the ancestors who made this land but also how we’re leaving it for future generations. Narrated by Quannah ChasingHorse and Ed Norton, and produced by a team of Indigenous creatives that includes Mato Wayuhi and Taylor Hensel of the amazing “Reservation Dogs,” “Bad River” is playing in theaters this weekend, a notable amplification of a noble message.

The Bad River Band or Bad River Tribe are a tribe of the Ojibwe people in part of northern Wisconsin along Lake Superior, one of the most vital bodies of water on the continent. Mazzio speeds through the history of the mistreatment of Native Americans from their representation in pop culture like “ The Searchers ” to their fights for sovereignty. The main thrust of her film centers on the Line 5 Pipeline, the property of a company called Enbridge that is basically found on Bad River land.

When an eroding pipeline is discovered, a battle ensues to remove it, but Mazzio’s approach isn’t merely to focus on this one case, using interviews with locals to sometimes try and tell too many stories at once. It’s admirable and totally understandable to want to raise awareness about the many issues facing these cultures in the 2020s and emphasize a return to tradition, but the film often drifts from the David-and-Goliath story that could have anchored it. It’s also heavy with sound bites from interviews and over-scored with near-constant music. There’s a remarkable scene late in the film in which the arc of the river is tracked like the arc of a life and I longed for more material like that—rich, specific, focused—and less that felt like a history lesson.

If it feels like Mazzio could have made an entire series out of the many issues at play in “Bad River,” it also feels a bit churlish to come down too hard on a film that’s using every minute of its chance to amplify important issues. It ultimately places the Line 5 Pipeline in a legacy that includes the Dawes Act, the disappearing of Native American children, and the Indian Relocation Act. “Bad River” gains a cumulative power in the way it consistently counters these tragedies with moving interviews with the proud, vibrant people who have refused to leave, illustrating the courage of resistance that takes place across generations. If it's sometimes like a movie that’s trying to tell a few too many stories at once, it’s hard to blame it. There are so many stories that need to be heard.

Riley strain's bank card found near nashville river as search continues, riley strain bank card found near river embankment as search continues, 1.1k 3/18/2024 9:48 am pt.

11:35 AM PT -- Nashville PD has released the latest evidence they have of Riley Strain being seen on the night in question -- and it comes courtesy of none other than bodycam footage from a police officer.

In the body cam video -- which was rolling while the officer was checking out a burglary call on a vehicle -- you can see Officer Reginald Young interact with Riley who casually strolls right by him ... they even exchange a brief hello, and RS looks fairly normal and put together.

Nashville PD says this appears to be the last sighting of him on camera before he vanished.

A major clue has been uncovered in the disappearance of Riley Strain ... as authorities discovered the missing college student's bank card Sunday near a river in town.

According to Nashville Police, Riley's bank card was found on the embankment between Gay St. and the Cumberland River -- where surveillance video is said to have last captured Riley. No other update was issued ... except that the search for Riley continues.

This update comes after Nashville's Office of Emergency Management had the dive team search for Riley in the Cumberland River on Saturday. As the OEM put it to FOX17 ... the search plan included taking several boats along the riverfront where Riley was last seen.

Based on indicators from search K9s onboard, sonars were used to locate areas where divers could look more thoroughly. Saturday's search reportedly resulted in no conclusive findings. Additionally ... the outlet says police do not currently suspect foul play.

However, a local eyewitness claimed to FOX17 Riley was not alone after leaving Luke's 32 Bridge Friday evening. A homeless man detailed that he and his wife, who live by the riverbank, heard a commotion and allegedly saw Riley almost stumble into the river.

He added ... "I never seen anybody stumble that hard before," while claiming RS looked very intoxicated.

The man claims he didn't explore the situation further, claiming someone was apparently already there with Riley, who assured him Riley was just drunk. No word on who that person might've been, or any description of them. The FOX17 report didn't elaborate either.

Remember ... the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission is currently investigating whether Riley was overserved at Luke Bryan 's Nashville bar. While the establishment is cooperating with authorities, they defended themselves in a recent statement that they only served Riley one alcoholic drink (and two waters) before asking him to leave.

The country superstar himself also spoke out on Riley's disappearance, calling the whole thing scary and asking for prayers.

For anyone who may have reliable information on Riley's whereabouts, cops encourage you to call 615-742-7463.
