Seller's Description

2012 MC Scow #2556 for Sale Includes boat cover, trailer and Z-Max sail. Also includes lift if wanted.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Based on the J SCOW of the the mid-1950’s. (Designed and built by John O. Johnson). Significantly updated by Melges.

SAILING WORLD'S BOAT OF THE YEAR

Designed by Reichel/Pugh and built by Melges, the Melges 15 prioritizes stability, comfort, ease of use, and performance.

“The Melges 15 creates a clear pathway for junior sailors to get started and stay excited about sailing while also being comfortable and accessible enough for adults to learn, race, or cross-train,” said Harry Melges III.

The Melges 15’s stable hull shape and ergonomic cockpit make it a suitable layout for adult racing and educational sailing. Easy conversion from a club configuration (non-spinnaker) to a one-design setup, provides more versatility to club programs and options for individual owners.

With the main design goals focused on stability and performance in a variety of conditions, the boat features a narrow overall beam and a flat cross-section shape for stability, righting moment, and ease of planing. For a more forgiving feel upwind and to navigate larger sea states, the Melges 15 has just the right amount of fore and aft rocker.

Melges conducted extensive research and product testing to produce this layout factoring in cockpit depth, backbone height, and floor plan. The result is a comfortable environment for both the skipper and crew. The deeper cockpit takes the load off the sailor’s knees helping them feel locked into the boat while the high boom and gnav vang system work together to make the boat easier to maneuver.

The asymmetric spinnaker offers an additional performance element while the single-pull launch and retrieval system makes handling the sail easy and fast.

The Melges 15 is built to be sailed by everyone from friends and couples to families and kids. The design offers performance, comfort, and stability in one sleek package.

Asymmetrical Spinnaker

Learn more on QuantumSails.com .

Ergonomic Cockpit – The Melges 15 features an ergonomic platform and a broader weight range for competitive racing. Melges conducted extensive research and product testing to produce this layout factoring in cockpit depth, backbone height, and floor plan. The result is a comfortable environment for both the skipper and crew. The deeper cockpit takes the load off the sailor’s knees and helps them feel more locked into the boat. Creating a boat that adults can feel comfortable while sailing was a key design factor in the hull and cockpit design of the Melges 15.

Performance & Stability – With the main design goals focused on stability and performance in a variety of conditions, the Melges 15 features a narrow overall beam and a flat cross-section shape for stability, righting moment, and ease of planing. For a more forgiving feel upwind and to navigate larger sea states, the Melges 15 has just the right amount of fore and aft rocker.

Single-Pull Spinnaker System – The asymmetric spinnaker offers an additional performance element while the single-pull launch and retrieval system makes handling the sail easy and fast. One line pulls the halyard up, bowsprit out, and tack line out. To take the kite down, simply release the pull-up line and pull the douser line to take the kite back down again. The kite douses into a bag located in the front of the cockpit.

Cockpit Layout –  Every aspect of the deck hardware has been designed for simplicity and ease of use. With blocks and cleats situated in easy-to-grab locations making it easier on the skipper and crew to maneuver the boat.

Gnav Vang – The Gnav vang system gives the crew substantially more space to maneuver in the cockpit.

Tapered Aluminum Mast – The Melges 15 mast features a tapered mast tip allowing for maximum depowering when the breeze is up. The stiffer bottom of the mast combined with the softer mast tip allows the M15 to be sailed competitively by a wider range of weights in both light and heavy air.

Aluminum Foils – Aluminum foils maximize performance and durability in one package. Consistent foil shape helps ensure fair racing across the class while being extremely durable.

Flip-up Rudder –  Never has been getting your rudder up been so easy. No need to get wet, no lines to pull, just pop the tiller up and pull it forward, this action pulls the rudder into its flipped up position.

Club Sailing or Racing –  Transitioning from a non-spinnaker to a spinnaker platform is quick and easy. Set the bowsprit and spin back in the boat and you are ready to go. This is a great feature for clubs who want to teach during the day and race at night.

Closed Transom –  Comfort and safety were at the forefront of this design. Closing the transom of the Melges 15 has eliminated the need for a false floor, allowing for a deeper more comfortable cockpit. Any water that enters the easily drains out of the scupper holes in the transom and the bailors in the cockpit.

Harry Melges III

Harry Melges III

Harry Melges III has worked in the sail making and sailboat building businesses his entire life. Growing up in a family business that supplies high-performance sails and sailboats, Harry was constantly thinking of ways to push the boundaries. How can we sail a boat faster, make a sail faster, or build a boat better? Melges' mission has been to encourage more people to participate in the sport we love by bringing forward products that make boats easier and more fun to sail and improving quality and value with every new addition to the Melges line-up. From a young age Harry spent much of his time crawling around the sail loft, learning from the artisans of the 70s and 80s how to make sails the "old school" way, something that is somewhat lost in our computer world. Taking that experience and blending it with today's technology has produced some of the fastest sails in our one-design classes through the years. Harry is thrilled to be joining Quantum Sails, a company with values similar to Melges, and fully committed to promoting and growing the great sport of sailing while delivering the highest quality products at the best value. "I'm excited to be working with an American company that always makes the customers' needs its number-one priority."

HOT NEWS from Roger MacGregor :

AFTER BUILDING 40,000 MACGREGOR SAILBOATS, ITS RETIREMENT TIME.  (Sort of) .

It has dawned on the MacGregors that we are suddenly way beyond retirement age, beyond geezerhood, and it’s time to start a new career. We have recently ended production of the MacGregor sailboats at our Costa Mesa, California plant, and are continuing to develop our all new MacGregor 70. We have converted our 5 acre production site to 11 industrial rental units. We are now big time landlords.

EVERY YEAR, FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS , THE VARIOUS MODELS OF THE MACGREGOR 25 AND MACGREGOR 26 HAVE BEEN THE BEST SELLING SMALL CRUISING TYPE SAILBOATS, NOT ONLY IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.   WE CAN THINK OF NO OTHER MANUFACTURER, OF ANY TYPE OF PRODUCT, THAT HAS SO TOTALLY DOMINATED ITS MARKET FOR SO LONG A PERIOD OF TIME .

Does Your Mast Float?

mc sailboats

For 1996 and later MCs, all masts must float for 10 minutes. MC Scow Scantlings

Many one-design classes require some provisions for mast flotation to help prevent turtling. These include sealing the mast or providing positive flotation with foam or floats.

The MC class requires the mast to be sealed in order to float for 10 minutes. A sealed mast provides about 20 pounds (net) buoyancy.  I recently discovered, the hard way, that my mast was not sealed. If you have replaced fittings on your mast, you may have degraded the seal.

Sealing your mast

If your mast isn’t sealed, you can repair it with silicone. Here are three tips for a complete job:

  • Pay particular attention to the mast head fitting. This contacts the water first when you capsize and it has a lot of potential surface area for leaks. It might pay to drill out the rivets, remove the fitting, and seal the joint completely.
  • Seal all of the fittings, even if you don’t suspect they leak. You don’t need to pull out the fitting. Just work silicone into the edges around the fitting and into any holes or other gaps.
  • A rivet is not self-sealing. Cover the existing rivet heads. If you replace rivets, also coat the body with silicone.

Here’s a video showing how to seal your mast.

Positive Flotation

Some classes require positive mast flotation.

  • E Scows incorporate flotation panels into their sailing instructions to be used at the discretion of the race committee.
  • Some MC local fleets require flotation panels for all club races.
  • Thistles with aluminum masts require positive flotation.
  • Note for other classes: Don’t try to add foam to your mast if it is sealed. Since you’re not increasing the amount of water displaced, this will only add weight without increasing buoyancy. Foam will also affect the stiffness of the mast.

If your class doesn’t require positive flotation, you may still want to try it for practice or confidence-building. Mast Head Floats – A cheap aid to training , from the Musto Performance Skiff website makes some good points about gaining experience in difficult conditions with a float.

Sources of flotation devices

  • North Sails – Zenda, sells MC flotation panels
  • Flying Scot Association flotation panel .  This looks very similar to the MC panels I have seen.
  • APS Mast Float for Top of Mainsail. This doesn’t look suitable for scows, but may be OK for small dinghies.
  • Any sailmaker should be able to make a you a flotation panel.

Chicago Boat Show, a McCormick Place staple, will move to Rosemont

Organizers said the relocation decision came after multiple conversations with exhibitors and market research..

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times

The annual Chicago Boat Show will be moving next year out of its longtime home at McCormick Place, organizers announced Thursday.

After 92 years, Chicago’s largest boat show will debut at Rosemont’s Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on Jan. 8-12, 2025.

The decision came after multiple conversations with exhibitors, said Darren Envall, vice president at National Marine Manufacturers Association, organizer of the event. Market analysis and boater feedback were also factors for the shift to Rosemont, which is closer to suburban boaters.

“The more centralized Rosemont ... location positions the show for growth, accommodating the expanding boating population across a broader Chicagoland region,” Envall said in a news release.

Next year’s show is expected to feature more fishing boats, which cater to suburban and recreational boaters, a large customer base. The average boater’s income is $100,000 or less, Envall told the Sun-Times, so the convention will display more entry-level boats. However, the event will still showcase million-dollar yachts, he added.

Outdoor industries, including boating, became more popular during the pandemic when people could enjoy being outside while remaining socially distant from others, Envall said.

In 2022, the number of outdoor recreation participants grew 2.3% to a record high of more than 168 million people, or 55% of the U.S. population ages 6 and older, according to a 2023 report from the Outdoor Industry Association.

January’s Chicago Boat Show was expected to attract about 40,000 visitors from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and southern Wisconsin. Exhibitors displayed some 400 fishing boats, deck boats, ski boats, wake boats, pontoons and yachts ranging in price from less than $10,000 to more than $1 million. But only 18,169 visitors turned out, said Envall, citing bad weather.

He expects next year's show to have 40,000 attendees, along with exhibitors from multiple states in the region.

In the last decade, the show has evolved from boats, recreational vehicles and sailing vessels to strictly a boat exhibition, which Envall said was also a deciding factor for moving to Rosemont.

Other outdoor industry events staging shows at the DES Convention Center include the Chicago RV & Camping Show, the Chicago Golf Show and the Travel & Adventure Show.

The DES Convention Center has 840,000 square feet of exhibition space, compared to 2.6 million square feet of exhibit halls at McCormick Place.
