Marina Spotlights

Cape charles yacht center.

In 2013, Erye Baldwin had plans to create a development in Cape Charles, Virginia, that would help preserve, protect, and revitalize the Eastern Shore. In May 2014, that vision became a reality with the opening of Cape Charles Yacht Center , the newest destination for marine and yacht services on the East Coast. Located right off the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Cape Charles Yacht Center is a prime location just steps away from downtown Cape Charles , with easy access for cruisers heading north or south. There is an 18-foot-deep channel and accommodations for luxury yachts up to 240 feet.

Our greatest amenity is how natural we are. The ecosystem here in Cape Charles draws boaters to the area, says Erye Baldwin, owner of Cape Charles Yacht Center. It's all about the environment and preserving what we have surrounding us. There are two ecosystems in a three-mile radius around Cape Charles. Boaters take advantage of the popular tours to explore the chain of uninhabited barrier islands that stretches from Assateague Island in the north to Fisherman's Island in the south.

Chesapeake Marine Services is Cape Charles's designated service/maintenance operator, ready to help whether you need skilled carpentry, cabin outfitting, bottom painting or electrical repairs. The yacht center has a 75-ton boat lift and ample storage facilities; a 300-ton lift is being built this year.Marina guests are welcome to use the amenities at neighboring Bay Creek Resort, which has two outdoor pools, a members lounge and a state-of-the-art fitness center. And don't forget to bring your golf clubs! The two on-site golf courses were designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Cape Charles Yacht Center offers free shuttle transportation to local attractions, including Eddie Bell's Raw Bar in the historic Harvey Building in Oyster, Virginia, where you can enjoy the best local oysters imaginable, shucked by Eddie Bell himself. Guests can also tour the Cherrystone Aqua Farm, a working clam farm and nursery. Or head over to The Shanty, a waterfront seafood spot serving Caribbean-style tacos and their signature shanty fries. The yacht center is constructing a restaurant that will serve American cuisine using fresh produce and ingredients from local farmers and vendors.

Cape Charles Yacht Center has exceeded all expectations with their accommodations for super yachts and their dedication to preserving the ecosystems around them. As business is booming, so are plans for future renovations. The marina plans to add more lodging for visitors and an additional 1,000 feet of dock space, and to expand the service center for long-term refits, scheduled to be completed in September of this year. So while you're heading north this spring, tie up at Cape Charles Yacht Center, and experience the best that the Chesapeake Bay has to offer.

By this agreement, CCMS agrees to permit the Owner to dock the above-named vessel at the Yard for the period indicated. Payment for transient vessels is due on arriving at the Yard. Payments for monthly dockage contracts are due by the first day of each month. Reservations require a one-night dockage fee deposit. The Owner agrees to allow the Yard at its sole discretion to take whatever actions it deems appropriate to attempt to safeguard the vessel in the case of threatened or occurring natural events that may place the vessel in peril, and to indemnify and hold harmless the Yard, its officers, directors, employees, and agents for any damage or loss that results therefrom. The Owner agrees to pay for extraordinary expenses incurred by the Yard while fulfilling this portion of the agreement. The Owner is responsible for his/her vessel. The Owner agrees not to hold the Yard liable for any damages caused by weather, other vessels, Harbor visitors, or owner neglect. The Owner is liable for any damage to the Harbor or Yard property or other vessels caused by the Owner’s vessel. The Owner must maintain his/her vessel in operating, seaworthy condition. Derelict, leaking, or sinking vessels must be removed from the Harbor. If the Owner does not remove an inoperable vessel, the vessel will be removed at the Owner’s expense and the Owner’s right to dockage will be discontinued. If the Owner sells his/her vessel, dockage does not convey to the new Owner. CCMS may grant a short period of time for a new Owner to move the vessel out of the Harbor. If the vessel is not moved promptly, CCMS reserves the right to haul the vessel at the Owner’s expense and/or bill the Owner at the nightly rate until the slip is relinquished. The Yard offers long-term dockage on a first-come, first-serve basis. Following the summer season, the Owner has first right of refusal for the slip the next season. If the Owner relinquishes the slip, CCMS will offer the slip to the next Owner on its waiting list. CCMS allows a limited number of live-aboards on a case-by-case basis. Payment for monthly dockage is due on the first day of the month. A 1.5% service fee is applied to all credit card transactions. Cash and checks are welcomed with no additional fees. Owner may not “loan out” his/her slip to other vessels without written permission from CCMS. No “Airbnb” or short-term rentals may be operated out of the Town Harbor Marina. CCMS may end this dockage agreement at any time and without cause by providing a 30-day notice to Owner.

Cape Charles Yacht Center to Take Over Town-Owned Marina

cape charles yacht center & marine services

The Cape Charles Harbor will benefit from new management. Photo: Cape Charles Yacht Center

Two marine companies in Cape Charles are coming together, and it’ll likely to bring a boost to Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

On October 1, the town-owned Cape Charles Harbor began a three-month transition to management by the neighboring Cape Charles Yacht Center. The town council unanimously approved the three-year contract in September. This public-private partnership offers the potential to grow both businesses. With its prime location just inside the Chesapeake’s mouth, with a protected harbor and 18-foot channel, Cape Charles can become a major stopover for cruising boat traffic from Florida to New England.

The Yacht Center’s leaders plan to expand its capabilities to service large yachts, including acquisition of a 500-metric-ton hoist and construction of a 70-foot-high, 70,000-square-foot service shed. The expansion will bring additional good-paying skilled jobs to the area.

Meanwhile, the Town and its Harbor’s certified clean marina will serve “spillover traffic” and offer facilities and amenities for transient visitors as well as local boaters, working watermen, and anglers. The Yacht Center will share employees with the Harbor, including a full-time dockmaster for both facilities.

The principals behind the Yacht Center, JP Turner and Nicole Jacques, bring significant strengths to both enterprises. Turner is President and a co-owner of Front Street Shipyard, a custom boat builder, service yard and marina that has transformed the waterfront of Belfast, Maine into a major Northeast hub for boats of many sorts, from 20’ center consoles up to and including 200’ mega-yachts. Jacques is the owner of Rhumbline Communications, a strategic marketing and communications firm serving the marine industry also based in Belfast.

Although there is no formal ownership connection between the Cape Charles Yacht Center and Front Street Shipyard, Turner and Jacques anticipate opportunities to collaborate on projects, as Front Street does with several other Maine shipyards. Such teamwork will be especially appropriate as Turner and Jacques move forward with plans to

Rhumbline Communications will be in position to market the two operations together broadly along the Atlantic coast. Front Street Shipyard offers the same kind of synergy with the town wharf in Belfast. However, to make sure the new relationship is truly effective, the Cape Charles Town Council built a one- year review into the contract to allow its members to evaluate all aspects and adjust as appropriate. One major priority is to make sure the Town retains its identity as a working harbor, even as it expands its outreach.

Boaters’ Guide to Visiting Cape Charles

Whether you’re arriving to Cape Charles via boat or bringing your boat along on your Eastern Shore vacation, you’ll find that the town is very boater-friendly. Here’s what you need to know about bringing your boat to Cape Charles.

Where to dock your boat in Cape Charles

There are a few options for docking your boat in Cape Charles.  Cape Charles Yacht Center  is known as the premier Chesapeake Bay marina and boatyard. Its 18-foot-deep channel can accommodate vessels of all sizes, including megayachts.  Cape Charles Harbor , managed by the Yacht Center, hosts commercial and recreational vessels with 1200 feet of dock space and 95 slips. Another option is the  Oyster Farm Marina , which boasts 124 fully cushioned slips that can accommodate vessels up to 150 feet.

Boat launches near Cape Charles

Just looking to launch your boat in or around Cape Charles? There are plenty of places to begin your exploration of the Chesapeake Bay, whether you’re looking to do some fishing or just taking a pleasure cruise. You can find a list of all of  Northampton County’s boat ramps  here.

  • The  Wise Point Boat Ramp  is located within the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge. If offers access to both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Virginia Inside Passage.
  • There is a boat ramp at  Kiptopeke State Park  offering easy access to the legendary fishing around the park’s concrete ships.
  • Launching and hauling boats from the ramp at the  Cape Charles Harbor  is free. The ramp gets busy during warmer months, and boaters should also plan in advance for parking and trailer storage.
  • If you’re heading offshore to explore the Barrier Islands, Oyster Harbor is a great place to start. There’s no fee to launch from here.

Boating safety around the Eastern Shore

The tidal marshes, underwater grass flats, and strong winds that are common in the area can present a challenge to even experienced boaters. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather as well as the tides to avoid getting caught out in the open by a storm, or being stranded by the tides. If you’re exploring the Barrier Islands, the best time to do so is on a rising tide. Also keep an eye out for “No Trespassing” signs to avoid landing on private property, and be aware that some islands may be closed periodically to protect nesting birds.
