US couple missing in Caribbean after fugitives allegedly steal their yacht: Police

An American couple has gone missing in the Caribbean after three escaped prisoners allegedly used their yacht to island hop before getting recaptured by authorities, according to investigators.

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel disappeared from their yacht, Simplicity, which was docked in the waters of the southern Caribbean nation of Grenada, Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmarais, told ABC News.

Police have not confirmed the identity and nationality of the couple but are investigating the incident.

Hendry and Brandel were last seen alive by their boating neighbor at the dock on Sunday afternoon, according to Desmarais. The neighbor said he saw the couple entering a restaurant, Desmarais said.

"That man went to bed that night and he looked over and Simplicity was there when he went to bed," but when the neighbor "got up at 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Simplicity was gone," she told ABC News.

Desmarais said the couple had been in Grenada for about two weeks, and their yacht left the island a week earlier than planned.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said the yacht allegedly became the target of three alleged criminals, Ron Mitchell, Trevon Robertson and Abita Stanislaus, all from St. Andrew, Grenada, who escaped from a police station after they were arrested on Sunday.

They were charged jointly with robbery with violence before their escape, police said. Mitchell was also charged with rape, attempted rape and indecent assault, according to investigators.

All three fugitives allegedly managed to make their way to a neighboring Caribbean country using the yacht, but they were caught by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Grenada Police said they are "currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process."

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association, a sailing association that the couple belonged to, said in a statement a good Samaritan boarded the yacht when anchored and abandoned off a St. Vincent beach and contacted both them and the Coast Guard when he found no one inside.

The good Samaritan allegedly "found evidence of apparent violence," according to the association.

"I have spoken to the families and have offered our deepest condolences and our assistance in any way possible. In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this," Bob Osborn, SDSA's president, said in a statement Friday evening.

The investigation is ongoing.

The couple, who lived on the boat, had been sailing the same route for a number of years, Desmarais said. That route started in Virginia, followed by a stop in Massachusetts, then to Florida to see Desmarais and her family, before heading south to island hop in the Caribbean.

Hendry and Brandel's two children and Desmarais' son traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday to join the search.

"Their love for life and island people, they're good, basic people," Desmarais said. "Until they find a body, they're still alive."

Odysseus, private lunar lander, successfully touches down on moon's surface

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A private spacecraft successfully landed on the moon Thursday, marking the first time since NASA's famed Apollo moonwalkers that the U.S. has been back on the lunar surface.

Initial contact with the Odysseus lander was weak, according to officials with the company, Intuitive Machines.

Tension mounted in the company's command center in Houston, as controllers awaited a signal from the spacecraft some 250,000 miles away.

It arrived about 10 minutes later.

"We're evaluating how we can refine that signal," said mission director Tim Crain. "But we can confirm, without a doubt, that our equipment is on the surface of the moon."

Odysseus descended from a moon-skimming orbit and guided itself toward the surface, searching for a relatively flat spot among all the cliffs and craters near the south pole.

The lander's choreographed descent was the first for the U.S. since 1972, when Apollo 17's Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt left the last bootprints in the desolate gray dust.

Intuitive Machines was striving to become the first private business to successfully pull off a lunar landing, a feat achieved by only five countries. Another company gave it a shot last month, but never made it to the moon, and the lander crashed back to Earth.

Odysseus, carrying NASA experiments, reached the moon Wednesday, six days after rocketing from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The six-footed carbon fiber and titanium lander - towering 14 feet - carried six experiments for NASA. The space agency gave the company $118 million to build and fly the lander, part of its effort to commercialize lunar deliveries ahead of the planned return of astronauts in a few years.

Scorpius Space Launch Company, based in Torrance, California, built two of Odysseus' fuel tanks, which contain liquid oxygen and liquid methane.

The tanks will help the lander reach the moon's surface by using clean fuel -- something that Scorpius' CEO Markus Rufer says has never been done before.

"It is exciting because we've been dreaming about this for a long time," Rufer said. "Going back to the moon as a nation is, of course, exciting because we haven't done that in like 50 years. And for a private company, commercial company (to) go there -- it's never even really been attempted."

Intuitive Machines' entry is the latest in a series of landing attempts by countries and private outfits looking to explore the moon and, if possible, capitalize on it. Japan scored a lunar landing last month, joining earlier triumphs by Russia, U.S., China and India.

The U.S. bowed out of the lunar landscape in 1972 after NASA's Apollo program put 12 astronauts on the surface . A Pittsburgh company, Astrobotic Technology, gave it a shot last month, but was derailed by a fuel leak that resulted in the lander plunging back through Earth's atmosphere and burning up.

Intuitive Machines' target was 186 miles shy of the south pole, around 80 degrees latitude and closer to the pole than any other spacecraft has come. The site is relatively flat, but surrounded by boulders, hills, cliffs and craters that could hold frozen water, a big part of the allure. The lander was programmed to pick, in real time, the safest spot near the so-called Malapert A crater.

The solar-powered lander was intended to operate for a week, until the long lunar night.

Besides NASA's tech and navigation experiments, Intuitive Machines sold space on the lander to Columbia Sportswear to fly its newest insulating jacket fabric; sculptor Jeff Koons for 125 mini moon figurines; and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for a set of cameras to capture pictures of the descending lander.

The Odysseus moon landing has been a success!

Despite technical issues nearly causing a delay, Odysseus reached the surface of the moon at approximately 6:23 p.m. ET.

"We can confirm without a doubt the equipment is on the moon," Dr. Tim Crane said on the NASA broadcast. "Odysseus has a new home."

High-resolution photos of the moon landing are expected to be released at a later time, according to the agency.

Intuitive Machines' lander, named Odysseus, launched last week from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and entered lunar orbit on Wednesday. This is the first commercial landing in U.S. history.

This landing marked the first by a U.S.-built spacecraft in more than 50 years.

The lander is carrying five NASA instruments, including a radio beacon meant to transmit precise geolocation and cameras that capture how the surface of the moon changes from interactions with the engine plume of the spacecraft, as well as commercial cargo.

Odysseus -- nicknamed "Odie" by employees -- will have seven days before darkness descends on the landing site, which will prevent the spacecraft's solar panels from gathering energy from sunlight and bringing freezing temperatures.

Intuitive Machines was one of several companies approved by NASA under Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contracts to build private lunar landers that the federal space agency, among others, would use to send instruments into space.

Steve Altemus, president and CEO of Intuitive Machines, said the company's employees' names are engraved into the footer to permanently stamp their names on the lunar surface.

"I had everyone's name etched on the bottom of the landing gear so that their names will be indelibly printed on the moon when we touch down softly," he told ABC News.

This is the third attempt to land on the moon this year. In early January, the Peregrine lunar lander , built by Astrobotic, developed a critical fuel leak, forcing it to return to Earth and burn upon re-entry.

Meanwhile, Japan launched a rocket to the moon in September 2023 and landed on Jan. 19, becoming the fifth country to do so. However, the lunar lander landed upside down and could not deploy its solar arrays.

"There's reduced gravity There's very little atmosphere, lot of dust, and so the engineers have to speculate how a spacecraft would behave in that type of environment, right? And it doesn't exist here on Earth," Regina Blue, NASA's CLPS deputy program manager, told ABC News, explaining why it's so difficult to land on the moon.

"So they have to spend lots of hours testing and testing and doing more testing and even that, getting into that environment there is a good amount of unpredictability, so that makes it very, very hard," she continued.

These robotic missions are important to explore the moon as NASA and the Canadian Space Agency prepare to send four astronauts to fly around the moon in the upcoming Artemis II mission next year. If the mission is successful, Artemis III -- a moon landing -- is scheduled for 2026.

The Artemis team will be made up of three Americans -- Victor Glover, Christina Hammock Koch, and Reid Wiseman -- and one Canadian, Jeremy Hansen.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A warm front swept springlike weather across a large swath of the country Sunday in what is usually one of the coldest months of the year, sending people out of their homes to enjoy the rare winter respite but also bringing increased wildfire danger.

In Omaha, Nebraska, the temperature Sunday broke 65 degrees (18.3 degrees Celsius) on a day when the average high temperature is around the freezing mark, according to the National Weather Service.

“Omaha is having its second warmest February on record in its 154-year history of tracking weather,” National Weather Service meteorologist Michaela Wood said Sunday. “And there’s a chance of beating the record yet tomorrow, when we’re looking at a high temperature of around 80.”

The sunny warmth brought Stacy Lawson, and her husband, Hugh Lawson, of Omaha, outside for a game of pickleball with friends. But they weren’t the only ones.

“Outdoor courts are prime real estate when it’s warm,” Stacy Lawson said. “The first one we tried was already filled.”

The Lawsons and their competitors, Tim and Andrea Driscoll, had a hard time remembering the last year they were able to play outside in February.

“In Nebraska, February is both the shortest and longest month of the year,” Tim Driscoll deadpanned.

While the warmer-than-usual temperatures may have provided a break from harsh winter conditions, it didn’t come without some concerns. The National Weather Service cited the warmth, along with low humidity, winds gusting more than 35 mph (56 kph) in places, and dry winter vegetation in issuing fire danger alerts in an area stretching across parts of 11 states.

Red flag warnings and fire weather watches were issued in parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, up to Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and east to Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Nearby states, including parts of Arkansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin, were issued hazardous weather outlooks because of an increased fire danger, according to weather service maps.

A grassfire whipped up by high winds closed Interstate 25 near the Colorado-Wyoming border for about an hour Saturday before it was extinguished, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The unusually early warm spell could telegraph trouble ahead, Wood said. The Climate Prediction Center says there is an elevated chance of higher-than-normal temperatures and lower-than-normal rain for the region through the end of summer.

“If we keep going in this trend, we could go back into a drought, and that would be a big concern — especially when it comes to fire risk,” she said.

Temperatures reached into the 60s in Denver, Chicago and Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday, and Kansas City, Missouri, saw temperatures in the mid-70s. The unseasonably warm conditions saw plenty of people heading outdoors to play in local parks, wash their cars and even get an early jump on lawn care.

In Chicago, people who would normally be in winter gear to fight off the city’s famously bitter winter winds instead frolicked around Lake Michigan’s shores in light jackets or even shorts and T-shirts.

Bethany Scheiner, 53, took advantage of the weather to head with her 14-year-old son to Lincoln Park in Chicago so he could practice his football punting skills.

“It’s so unusual,” Scheiner said of the warm weather. “I mean, this is the month we all go away to get away from the Chicago winter.”

The warmup is expected to bring some record-breaking high temperatures Monday, Wood said. But by Tuesday night, a cold front will drop the region back into winter, with wind chills below zero and snow in much of the central part of the country by Wednesday.

Seattle has proven itself to be a  true-blue hockey city , and that happened not just because the Kraken got into the playoffs in their sophomore season (though that was very nice of them), but also because they are smartly engaging with the community. Some major league sporting events make me feel like a small cog in a marketing machine, but something about the Kraken’s outreach team’s tenor so far feels… right. Sure, not every patron knows how to walk around  Climate Pledge Arena  without blocking a dozen people (I’m a fast walker), but the vibes are still  excellent . 

Of most remarkable note is their collaboration with local artists to help design theme and celebration nights as part of their “Hockey Is For Everyone” initiative. At last year’s  Lunar New Year game , there were Monyee Chau’s knock-out warmup jerseys worn by the players pregame and then auctioned off for the One Roof Foundation charity. For this year’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, Juliana Kang-Robinson has taken inspiration from the Joseon Dynasty in her  dragon-forward jersey design . 

The event, which will highlight  local AAPI businesses and organizations , also comes with a nice little treat, as it’s one of the rare weekday games. A Monday at  12:30 pm ? I can celebrate the start of the Lunar New Year, see my boys slap around a puck, and still be home with plenty of time before  Jeopardy ? Sign me up.

Meet the man behind the Canucks' eye-popping dragon Lunar New Year jersey

Trevor Lai hit a designer hat trick when he was chosen to create the Canucks Lunar New Year jersey for the third time. But this year, he felt even more pressure.

“Obviously, the year of the dragon is the most important one in terms of the Zodiac calendar,” said Lai. “The dragon itself represents leadership, power, excellence. So starting off with the design, I wanted to express that in combination with the Canucks’ skate logo.”

The final jersey crest is a golden dragon wrapped around the iconic skate. “And I figured that since the rest of the dragon was all gold and red, that it would be nice to include the beautiful green and blue of the Canucks’ colours in the eyes.”

For the shoulder patch, Lai designed a version of the Canucks’ orca logo jumping into the air. The jersey was an instant hit with fans.

“The red jerseys, thanks to our amazing fans, sold out in about a day. So immediately, the team reacted quickly, and we thought about what would be a great second jersey, and came up with the gold on gold,” said Lai.

The second jersey isn’t cheap. The gold version with a name and number on the back costs $888.

“Every jersey is hand-sewn here locally in B.C., it’s so intricate. Our crest makers actually can only make six of these jerseys in a day,” said Canucks head of retail Wynn Moody.

There are many more affordable items adorned with Lai’s dragon and orca designs for sale at the team store for Lunar New Year night at Rogers Arena.

“From T-shirts to hoodies, scarves, mini sticks, mugs, pins, you name it, we have got it. So every fan can get a piece of this year’s Lunar New Year,” said Moody, who added a portion of proceeds will be donated to local non-profits that focus on anti-Asian racism.

Combating a rising tide of Asian hate during COVID is what motivated Lai to sign on to design the Canucks Lunar New Year jerseys in 2022.

“I think I opens people’s eyes and hearts to the Asian community, and I think that’s one of the most important parts of this design, and why I’m so happy to be involved with Canucks on this year after year,” he said.

Lai’s previous Lunar New Year jerseys for the year of the tiger and the year of the rabbit were worn by the Canucks during pre-game warm up. But the league won’t allow teams to wear theme night jerseys on the ice anymore.

“I’m really thankful I got to see them the last couple of years wearing it, and of course I was sad there is the change. But one of the things we worked on in response to that was to look beyond the jersey,” said Lai. “That’s why I created a really special animated project with the Canucks.”

Lai is the executive producer of a hugely popular online animated series called Super Boomi.

“So we created this mini episode where Boomi basically has to recruit the all-star Canucks, we have Petey, Miller, Demko, Hughes and Boeser, and bring them all together to help him save Lunar New Year,” said Lai. The episode drops on Lunar New Year, Feb. 10.

Lai hopes his jersey, and the year of dragon, will give the already surging Canucks a bit of luck during their push for the playoffs.

“I really hope this design will help bolster what is already an amazing team and an amazing year,” he said.

Around 500K join Chinatown’s Lunar New Year parade

NEW YORK (PIX11) — It’s the culmination of celebrations marking the Lunar New Year.

The 2024 Lunar New Year Parade transformed the streets of Chinatown with the sights and sounds of Asian culture and pride.

“I feel happy to be a part of this community, and I enjoy it a lot,” said Matthew Leiw.

An estimated 500,000 people joined to see the floats, performances, and colorful costumes. The parade has been around for 26 years. This rendition comes during the year of the dragon—a symbol of great significance in Chinese heritage.

“That’s on one of the great things about living in such a great city is that there are so many different kinds of people with so many different traditions and we want to check it all out,” Andrew Williams said.

This is the latest, World Cruising Sailing Yacht from Polish builder Conrad Shipyard and her unusual lines take sailing yacht design onto a new path.

The design brief called for a strong muscular layout akin to the SUV vehicles seen on our roads so often these days. It was our aim to match this in harmony with the appeal and elegance of a modern family cruiser.

CONRAD 115’s exterior styling underlines her ability to venture far from her homeport while providing a safe and comfortable home to its owner, guest and crew while doing so.

The high end sail control systems usually found on much larger yachts, comprise hydraulically operated captive reel winches as well as furling for foresails and in boom furling for main and mizzen. The distribution of the sailplan over two masts ensures safe and comfortable sail handling on offshore passages and leisurly coastal cruises alike. The use of internal ballast ensures that the access to shallow bays and coves is open to be explored by this unique sailing vessel.

It was the aim of shipyard and designers to provide a spacious and luxurious interior, outstanding visibility and very good weather protection. Be it under the bimini from the sun of tropical waters or inside the large pilot house when cruising under the harsh conditions sometimes encountered in the higher latitudes.

The combination of a high freeboard and a self contained bridgedeck beside the pilothouse provide also ample safe playground for kids and family reunions, while the forward tender bays acts as a Jacuzzi when in port or at anchor.

The gently sweeping sheerlines provide a wonderful frame for a spectacular forward view when enjoying the hot tub after a long day of sailing.

The aft bathing platform provides comfortable access to the sea when anchoring in pristine waters. All the onboard toys like tenders and jet skis stored in the stern garage can be comfortably launched with the help of a hydraulic lifting platform.

High quality materials have been used throughout in her construction. Carbon masts, paired with a hull and deck built from high end marine grade aluminium alloy form a great base for a sturdy and long lasting construction. This is underlined by her Lloyds Register of Shipping classification.

A high level of independence is achieved with large tanks and twin desalinators, so that even remote areas can be explored thoroughly and in style.

Chinatown hosts 2024 NYC Lunar New Year Parade

NEW YORK - Chinatown hosted this year's annual Lunar New Year Parade and Festival, the culmination of festivities that began on February 10.

This year is the Year of the Dragon, one of the animals that appears in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar.

According to beliefs, babies born during the year of the Dragon are destined for success, as the Dragon is seen as the most powerful animal in the zodiac and one that ushers in luck and prosperity.

This year's parade stepped off at Mott Street and Canal Street, before winding its way along East Broadway and Forsyth Street and ending next to Sara D. Roosevelt Park. 

Families, some of whom spent two weeks observing the holiday, along with tourists and transplants all lined the parade route for the celebration. 

The Lunar New Year is celebrated in several regions and countries with large Chinese populations, including Singapore, Indonesia, the Phillippines, Thailand, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. 

This year marks the 26th anniversary of the Chinatown parade.

2024 is the year of the wood dragon

Every Lunar New Year holds a special meaning based on an animal from the Chinese zodiac and an accompanying element (wood, fire, earth, water, metal). 

The Chinese zodiac consists of 12 different animals, which include the rat, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, ox, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. 

This year, 2024, is the year of the wood dragon.

The year of the wood dragon is believed to bring good luck, especially for those looking to focus more on their careers.

Lunar New Year traditions

Nearly two billion people around the globe celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as Chunjie – the "Lunar New Year" or "Spring Festival" when translated to English. 

In China, many families deep clean their homes the day before Lunar New Year begins. 

This is usually done to rid homes of bad luck. 

Food, trinkets and paper offerings are also extended to ancestors or deities, including whole chickens, fruit, tea, sculptures, incense and candles.

Other celebration rituals include hanging lucky scroll messages, setting off firecrackers or fireworks, eating long noodles and dumplings with symbolic meanings and exchanging cash gifts.

All About the Lunar Faire: A Mystical NJ Night Market

The Lunar Faire — a one-of-a-kind night market that hosts events all around NJ — is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. It runs only when there’s a full or new moon, so it can land on any day of the week. This outdoor pop-up market is a compilation of a bunch of fun + creative vendors (think crystals, carved rocks, holistic skincare, and aromatherapy candles) as well as performances, events, tarot readings, manifestation ceremonies, and more. It sets up camp at different spots throughout North, Central, and South Jersey — and the next event is actually in Hudson County. What is the Lunar Faire?

The Lunar Faire is an outdoor pop-up market that “celebrates the witchy, the weird, the strange and unusual, the moon, and all the weird things people make and do.” And it’s in the dark. Yep, you heard that right. One of the absolute highlights of the Lunar Faire is that it takes place at night under a new moon or full moon, making it spectacularly atmospheric and fun. The Lunar Faire has tons of tented vendors, many of whom come from far and wide to exhibit with like-minded creatives. This is not your average art show in the park.

The Lunar Faire is an immersive experience steeped in performance art and unique wares. Often cloaked, costumed, or in character, the attendees are just as much a part of the Faire as the actual vendors. Spy witches,  mermaids , horned monsters, and chivalrous knights while you have a fortune teller read your palms. There’s glowing potions and vampire  mocktails  poured into blood bags. Talented performers wield flaming torches while dancing under the full moon. And that is just a little taste of what a trip to the Lunar Faire is like.

The founders of this event pride themselves on inclusivity and acceptance, so the Faire is a place where people of all kinds are free to express themselves. The Lunar Faire, while wild, is a wholesome and safe event at its heart. “People are friendly, loving, inclusive and peaceful,” according to the website.

What To Buy

There are so many things to buy that you cannot even imagine. There are mounds of crystals, carved rocks, and  sculpted stones  for rock hounds. If you’re into holistic skincare, many vendors sell bath bombs, natural skin products, and aromatherapy candles. Most sellers are small business owners making their products and art pieces. It’s all more than you can imagine. From  plant shops to witchy crafts, home decor, and baked goods, there are so many things to buy or gift.

What To See

If you’re going, plan on being overwhelmed with creativity. This is like one big night fair of costumes, quirk, mystery, and expression. Having your tarot cards read by a spiritualist is one of the best ways to get into the mood. They’ll help you navigate whatever you are going through.

There are also many performances to see. From singers to fire eaters, dancing troupes to drag singers, the shows can keep you entertained all night long. But if you don’t want to watch, you are also invited to partake in drum circles, manifestation ceremonies under the night sky,  book  exchanges, spell casting, and much more!

We recommend participating in the Merry Meet Magic social event. Tips For Visiting

Go early.  This is a massively popular event, so expect parking to be a bit hectic. Depending on the venue, parking prices also vary, but it’s always best to carpool if you can. Because this is a nomadic event in various parts of the state, don’t worry if the latest event is not nearest to you. The next one might be right in your neck of the woods.

Bring a flashlight.  Once the sun sets, the ambient lighting from the tents and stages will brighten some of the ways; however, it’s a good idea to see where you’re walking if the ground is not level (especially heading to your car).

You can bring your kids.  It’s a  family-friendly  event, but it is more on the whimsical and spooky side, so use your best judgment if your kids will enjoy it.

Dress up.  Many of the visitors wear costumes, witch hats, and fairy wings. Wear whatever brings you joy!

Conrad motorsailer Lunar for sale

The 35.5 metre motorsailing yacht Lunar has been listed for sale by Jurgen Koch at Fraser in Palma.

Lunar is a ketch-rigged yacht for sale built in aluminium by Polish yard Conrad to Lloyds class and delivered in 2013. Her modern design comes from Newcruise Yacht Projects & Design , more precisely by its former principal designer Frank Neubelt, while her naval architecture is by Vripack .

The interior, designed by the in-house team, accommodates up to eight guests on the lower deck in a full-beam master suite and three twin cabins, all with Pullman berths and all convertible into doubles.

The bow section offers a sizeable lounge for family and friends to come together and relax, enjoying the panoramic views or a movie. A raised half-deck, located in the centre of the yacht, provides direct access to the flybridge and features a state-of-the-art helm station connected to a seating area for the captain and his guests.

Lunar has twin Lorima carbon masts and is powered by twin 725hp Caterpillar C-18 engines giving a top speed of 14 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a possible transatlantic range. Special features include a pool on the foredeck, which is also the berth for the main tender when underway.

Lying in La Spezia, Italy, Lunar is asking €8,000,000.

Inside the ‘weird and witchy’ experience of NJ’s Lunar Faire

The flute wizard is liable to flute you at the Lunar Faire in Sussex County this weekend. Trust that that makes perfect sense in the context of Lunar Faire, a traveling New Jersey night market with metaphysical rituals, unique vendors, potions, group spellmaking, fire dancing, music and many more things that fall into the category of “whimsical fun.”

“I didn’t want to pigeonhole into any specific thing,” says Tiffany Casey, who, with Kelly Dagion, founded the fair and launched the first edition last year. “We just went with ‘weird and witchy.’ I thought witchy was good because I had been reading tarot for 20 years, and there’s not a lot of that shit out there.

“We just want to make it a place for anyone to feel comfortable… except racists.”

Casey says the idea for the fair came after seeing an Instagram photo of a vendor tent with lights around it. Casey thought, “Oh my god, a night market; that would be so cute. Literally, that’s all that was.”

Casey had little experience in event planning but after sitting on the idea for a bit the idea was undeniable: “Finally, I was like, fine. After COVID, maybe people would want to do this and it won’t murder them, and that would be cool.”

Casey and Dagion scoped out a location in Oakland (NJ)—Crystal Lake Beach Club—where they had seen a Grateful Dead event and planned to hold the inaugural Lunar Faire there. Unsure of how the idea would play out in real life, Casey recalls asking the event coordinator there, “How many vendors do you think [should be] our bare minimum to try to get, so it does look like just a couple vendors. She was like, ’10 or 15.’ We were like, ‘Uh ok, I think we can scare up that many.’”

By all accounts, the event was a smashing success—they had booked enough performers, ticket giveaways upped the turnout, vendors starting piling in. Eventually 600 people or so experienced this unique event. So they committed to a bi-monthly schedule, coordinating with new and full moons, and providing a space for their community to grow.

“It’s just something you can look forward to that’s reliable: ‘I can go to this place every two weeks. The capitalism outside is not what I need to deal with every single second of every day,’” Casey says.

Undeniably, the whole construct of the fair caters to people who already have at least a passing interest in a wide range of areas from metaphysics to astrology to holistic healing, to, simply, the unusual. But, as Casey alluded to, the hope is that everyone who comes, regardless of why they did, has a unique, pleasant experience. 

Explains the Faire’s website FAQ (which is worth a read on its own because it’s funny): “The feud between witches and normies has all been a hilarious misunderstanding. You can get as close to the bonfire as you want. If you can’t let it go, though, feel free to take a diagnostic reading on the weird-o-meter. I feel like you might register higher than anticipated.”

That’s the thing, you can have fun at a Renaissance Fair, a football game, Comic-Con, a boat parade (eh, maybe not), without prerequisite interests. You might even find new things to like. Or, at least experience something different. Isn’t that the whole point of all this living shit anyway?

“The Lunar Queene does set the energy for the whole location and does protection spells,” Casey says. “There’s a lunification smoke cleanse you can take to cleanse your aura. It makes you feel good. I think these little details are what improves the energy; a lot of people say they enjoy being there. … We’ve gotten compliments from cops that our crowds are super nice. People are going to find their people, find their trinkets they want in their life. That’s one of the reasons why I thought it was important to do it every two weeks. “

The Lunar Queene does live spell work “relevant to the astrology of the moment,” Casey says. The event on April 1 falls during an Aries new moon, and so the spellwork will revolve around “stepping into your power” and “spring cleaning,” certainly in a spiritual context.

And as the fair grows in popularity, so do the stories of the community within it. For instance, two vendors whose Coney Island wedding got axed by COVID are now planning to get married at a Lunar Faire around Halloween weekend, after, first, participating in a pagan ceremony where they profess their dedication to one another, and after a period of time seeing if that’s actually what they want to do, get married. 

It’s a fun, unique thing—not only that side story, but the fair itself, the community and what it represents. It’s family-friendly, too; though, Casey says, the experience is unsterilized. Kids might see someone drinking a bag of fake blood, for instance, and parents ought to be cool with that.

It’s also somewhat of a family endeavor. The flute wizard mentioned above? That’s Casey’s dad. Casey’s mom is a reiki practitioner, an energy-based alternative healing procedure. Casey’s sister, Krissy Hines, runs the potions bar, and helps manage the fair. (Everything, including the potions, is non-alcoholic at the fair, by the way.)

Too, the vendors themselves are a draw; after all, the original vision was a night market. You’ll be able to get “oddball wares, curious crafts, intuitive services, esoteric arts and more.” Vendors, too, buy into the communal aspects of the fair:

“We really just try to promote goodness,” Casey says. “Our contract is very silly, it’s like, help each other out and that sort of thing. Vendors will, if you don’t know how to put your tent together for the first time, they’ll help you. It’s just that kind of vibe. We think it’s important for them to honor that.”

In our eyes, whatever you’re doing on Friday night is probably not as cool as this. And if you can’t make it to Augusta on April 1, check back with Lunar Faire to see the next scheduled events.
