The first model in a second generation of Bavaria’s C-series yachts, the new Bavaria C46 offers plenty of internal volume and on-the-water performance

Product Overview

Maurizio Cossutti’s sixth design for Bavaria, the Bavaria C46, is the first model in a second generation of the German yard’s C-series, which was originally launched six years ago. The new boat offers significantly more interior volume than its predecessor, the C45 from 2018, yet also claims better performance.

What Bavaria now calls its V-bow – broad forward sections that taper to a narrower waterline beam – is balanced by distinct chines aft. The net effect is improved accommodation volumes and greater form stability, yet little extra drag in light airs.

Bavaria continues to offer a wide choice of accommodation layouts, including a four cabin/four heads charter model, and three-cabin/three head option with a big owner’s suite forward.

It’s also possible to substitute one aft head for a Pullman-style fifth cabin, or a multipurpose room that can be used for laundry, or as a workshop etc.

Contrary to many yards, Bavaria doesn’t believe dinghy garages are necessary for a yacht of this size. The pay-off is bigger 160cm-wide aft cabins that can be fitted with convertible twin/double beds. On deck the cockpit is 10% longer than that of the C45 and there’s stowage for plenty of watersports toys.

Options include retractable dinghy davits, 350W of solar panels on the bimini, plus – in a new move for Bavaria – lithium-iron phosphate batteries. The first boat is scheduled to be afloat in summer 2023.

In 1978, sailor, Winfried Hermann, recognized a perfect space and, his next step was to open and establish a shipyard for sailing yachts there. His idea here was to produce industrial yachts, offer them at rock-bottom prices and give many customers the back drop to purchase their dream yacht for themselves.

It wasn’t til 2001 til they began to build motorboats. Right out of the gate, like the sailing yachts, they were an instant success. These boats were quality; built with a nice price-performance ratio —which helped them to gain popularity.

In 2010, standards for a yacht were raised and shoppers were now looking for something fast, safe, built to the highest standards and with all the amenities a modern vacation home would possess. The construction of a Bavaria yacht grew much more complicated leading to the now 600 employees of Bavaria Yachts based in Giebelstadt with a hefty production roll out of over 1000 sailing yachts and motorboats.

To ensure the best quality products, they secured market leaders in their fields. One will come to be quite impressed by its equipment and accessories. Think modern and innovative in it’s productions and you’ll have nailed it to be Bavaria yacht. One tidbit you may not have known, but Bavaria Yachts is the first shipyard in the history of yacht building! Each wooden part of a Bavaria yacht is painted up to six times on its own painting line.

They didn’t forget an important part of this successfully equation but pride themselves on each ship’s seaworthiness. This along with a high-sided hull ensures that a smooth ride is guaranteed. There is an R-/S-Line or VIRTESS so one will not only drive safely, but will feel secure when moving around on the boat thanks to broad gunwales and a railing that extends from bow to stern. Another plus in choosing a Bavaria is their use of isophthalic acid (IPA) resins in the outer layers. This is used during the laminating process and ensures that the hull of a Bavaria is of top quality. It also offers perfectly effective protection against osmosis and promoting longevity of the Bavaria.

Last February, 2019, Michael Müller was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and became the leader for the activities of the whole group, including Bavaria Yachtbau GmbH in Germany and Nautitech Catamarans SAS in France. This position went from vacant to a full house. Dr Ralph Kudla of CMP Capital Management Partners, represents and advises the investing equity fund, who has been delegated to the Board of Management and is now also responsible for finance and controlling of Bavaria Yachts as the Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO), explains: “In the few weeks with Michael Müller on board we have learned how effective he is and how well he has been received by employees and dealers. This is why we have asked him to take on the role of CEO.”

The experienced manager collaborated successfully before with the CMP team on other projects. Graduate engineer Michael Müller is 62 years old and has worked for brand manufacturers throughout his career. “I bring in my experience working for leading brands and I intend to reinforce the position of Bavaria Yachts as a quality manufacturer of modern sailing and motor yachts. At the moment the whole team is focused on preparing for the 2020 delivery season. They promise to meet their quality pledge as well as their promised delivery dates, so that the boats on order get into the water for the spring. In addition, we are continuously incorporating technological improvements into the production lines in Giebelstadt.” For that purpose, the management team has been strengthened by the addition of two experienced product managers: Pascal Kuhn for sailing yachts and Siep Keizer for motor yachts. Both report directly to Erik Appel, the Managing Director responsible for production.

First look: Bavaria C46 – proven concept, bigger size

The new Bavaria C46 follows hot on the heels of an impressive C38 and C42, and should deliver plenty of volume below without sacrificing sailing comfort

Product Overview

We tested the latest Bavaria C45 in 2018, which at the time was the first Cossutti designed Bavaria in that size range. Just five years later, Bavaria are bringing out a boat just one foot longer, although for the time being they say that the older boat will remain in the lineup.

The Bavaria C46 will follow in the footsteps of the Bavaria C38 and Bavaria C42 in maximising hull volume with full-length hull chines and a wide beam of 4.7m carried all the way aft. The hull is controlled with a single, deep and balanced spade rudder, and seakindliness is improved by a v-bow section in the forefoot – a concept that appeared to work well when I tested the C38, making the Bavaria C46’s smaller sister engaging and enjoyable to sail despite the large volume.

Where the new Bavaria C46 really shines, however, is the sheer amount of space and accommodation on board. The only fixed point of the accommodation is the saloon and galley, with C-shaped seating around a table to starboard with a bench seat amidships, and a large C-shaped galley along the hull side to port. Aft of the galley is a forward facing chart table – these are making their way back onto boats as remote working from on board is now commonplace.

Plenty of volume makes for a very spacious interior.

This is where the options kick in. The boat comes in three, four, or five cabin layouts, with either one or two double cabins forwards. The fifth comes from replacing the heads and shower compartment starboard aft with a bunk cabin, meaning two families of five could comfortably sail together.

For those looking to cruise without so many guests, the port heads and chart table can be replaced with a utility room, making space for washing machines and dryers, as well as ample stowage space for tools or as a wet locker.

If you go for the four double cabin layout, you can also have en suite heads for every cabin. Some of these layouts will appeal more for charter companies, but the drawings look like Bavaria have got the heart of the boat right, and highly practical.

On deck, the cockpit is wider than it is long, with L-shaped seats on either side around either one or two cockpit tables, which convert to sunpads. Most lines are led aft to the helm stations, though some options have coaming-top genoa winches. Genoa car tracks are mounted on the coachroof for a fine sheeting angle.

There isn’t an option to have boom-end mainsheet attachment sadly, but otherwise this all looks like a sensible and easily-handled boat.

Bavaria Yachts is a German boatbuilding company with one of the world’s most modern boat manufacturing facilities.

It has become one of Europe’s leading yacht builders and the biggest boatbuilding yard in Germany since establishing itself in 1978. The company builds a range of sailing and power boats from 29 to 57 feet and has been the owner of Nautitech catamarans since 2014.

How much a Bavaria boat coast will come down to your choice of motor or sail, plus the size of boat you are interested in purchasing.

There are currently 38 Bavaria models to choose from, ranging in size from 29 to 57 feet. The models include 16 sailing yachts plus a choice of 12 motor boats in the current Bavaria line-up.

Prices start from €98,900 for a new Bavaria Cruiser 34 and go up to €455,500 for the Bavaria Virtess 420 Fly; however, some models are POA (price on application), so they could be even higher.

We’ve put together the following tables as a quick reference as to exactly how much each new Bavaria boat model costs:

Please note these are the base model prices only. When you add optional extras, safety equipment, or any upgrades such as bigger engines, additional sails, or canvas work, you can easily expect to pay a few thousand euros more.

If these new boat prices seem quite daunting, then another option is to look at the used boat market. Here you may find a relatively new boat with many optional extras and upgrades already added for a more affordable price.

At the time of writing, a quick search on yachtworld.com, one of the world’s biggest secondhand boat market websites, came up with 723 Bavaria Yachts for sale. These include 231 new vessels and 492 secondhand models, all listed by experienced yacht brokers and boat dealerships worldwide.

Prices start from US$31,247 for a Bavaria 30 produced in 1987 and go up to just over US$1 million for a 2020 Bavaria R55 Fly.

Do Bavaria Boats Cost More Than Similar Brands?

Bavaria Yachts are classed as mass-production boats, meaning they are produced on an assembly line and are considered ‘off-the-shelf’ boats. Other similar brands include Beneteau, Dufour, and Hanse, amongst others.

But do Bavaria boats cost more than these similar brands? As new boat prices are difficult to find for some brands, we’ve made a quick price comparison on one of Bavaria’s most popular models, the Bavaria C38, with similar models from similar years on the secondhand boat market.

Here’s what we found:

At first glance, the Hanse 388 is more expensive than the other three brands, which compares favorably.

However, to get an idea of the real value, you would need to compare the detailed inventories of each boat to see what is included.

For example, engine sizes, sail inventories, and electronic packages can all vary, as can things like in-mast furling mainsail systems and overall sailing set-ups (blocks, winches, spinnaker poles, etc.).

Why Do People Choose Bavarias Over The Competition?

As we can see from our quick price comparison, the cost of a Bavaria Yacht is very competitive, so people are not choosing a Bavaria based on price alone.

So why do people choose Bavarias over the competition? We’ve established the following reasons:

If you are looking for other alternatives, it will depend on whether you are looking for power or a sailboat.

When ordering a new Bavaria Yacht, you will pay the full price, and the sale agreement will be fixed and binding.

However, if you are looking for a boat through an official Bavaria dealer, they may have a stock of boats they are willing to negotiate a deal on.

Don’t count on this, the boating industry has been experiencing a boom in the last couple of years, and most factories have full order books with waiting times of up to 2 years.

The charter market is a good option if you are looking for a great deal on a Bavaria yacht. Most charter companies have a turnaround time of 5 years on their boats. While charter boats get used and engine hours can be high, they also get well maintained.

A good tip is to look for a secondhand charter boat with a smaller cabin configuration, as these are generally in less demand, equating to less usage. Depending on your buying power, you may be able to negotiate a good discount on a secondhand ex-charter boat.

Final Thoughts:

While Bavaria Yachts sometimes get a bad rap on the various boating forums, they have many more fans than detractors.

The boats are classified more as coastal than blue water cruisers, but many Bavaria Yachts have safely crossed oceans.

If you are looking for a lot of boat for your money, then you won’t go wrong with a Bavaria Yacht.
