Santa Monica's Famous Pier Sign

Excerpt from  Santa Monica Pier: A Century on the Last Great Pleasure Pier  by James Harris   (Angel City Press, 2009)

There was once a time when visitors to the Santa Monica Pier would either walk or drive down the hill from the corner of Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue and then walk or drive up onto the Pier. That’s right, UP! That all changed in the late 1930’s, and the result of that change left the world with one of southern California’s most immediately recognizable and iconic landmark signs.

In 1939, work began on the  Colorado Grade Separation Project , a complex highway project that was designed to improve access between the Pacific Coast Highway and city streets. The location of the project eliminated the traditional access to the pier, so planners designed a ramp at the end of Colorado Avenue to allow traffic to overpass the new access ways and travel directly onto the pier’s deck.

Ground broke for the new pier ramp on September 19, 1939, closing the entrance to the Municipal Pier and tearing up part of the pier’s east end. The City, recognizing that business would be severely hampered by the project, reduced rentals for businesses on the pier by five percent. Construction took five months and the ramp was opened for use on June 12, 1940.

The new access ramp was not clearly visible, nor was it obvious that it was indeed the correct route to the pier. This was of great concern to the businesses on the pier. With the money saved from the rent reduction during construction, the Santa Monica Pier Business Men’s Association committed two thousand dollars to hire the Pan-Pacific Neon Sign Company to design and construct a neon sign and mount it at the top of the bridge. The new sign was unveiled on June 17, 1941.

The sign’s text reads “Santa Monica Yacht Harbor – Sport Fishing – Boating – Cafes”, which may confuse the unknowing visitor today. However, when the sign was originally installed the Santa Monica Pier was indeed home to a fully functional and popular yacht harbor which provided moorings for, among others, internationally famous actor Charlie Chaplin.

The arched blue sign — twenty feet at its highest point, twelve feet at its lowest and supported by columns on each side of the ramp — has since become an internationally recognized landmark. In 1996 the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation declared the iconic sign a historic landmark. The official record notes its dual historical significance as: 1) a classic example of signage from the neon era, and 2) the designated marker for the last existing pleasure pier in an area in which they were once bountiful.

The Yacht Harbor of the Four Winds Club is in the northern part of the town, at Jachtowa, on the west bank of the Świna River. Nearby is the Angel's Fort and the Yacht Port of the Sports and Recreation Center. Accessible by car or local public transport.

It is the closest pool to the harbor heads. When heading to the Four Winds, you need to steer very carefully, because you can run aground. The pool is rectangular with a wooden berth. Vessels with a maximum draft of up to 1.5 meters can moor in it. In places in the port, it is even shallower - about 1 meter, especially in the northern part of the marina. The marina is surrounded by greenery, sheltered from northern winds and high waves. Sailors have at their disposal piers equipped with water and power connections. There is also a slip and a crane for lifting yachts out of the water. There is a hangar on site where yachts can be repaired and stored. There is also a mechanical workshop.

Welcome to the South Carolina Yacht Club Sports Center! The Sports Center amenities include 7 beautiful Har-Tru courts, featuring a stadium court, where tennis exhibitions are put on by the area's top teaching professionals several times each year. Our swimming complex includes a wonderful lap pool with a children's pool nearby. A fitness center with treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and free weights is also available for member use.

Our 25-meter pool and adjacent baby pool are open throughout the year from dawn to dusk, weather permitting.

Water Aerobics - Monday, Wednesday & Friday 7:15-8:15 am - complimentary

Adult Aqua training -Wednesday, 9-10 am -  $15Group class with general swimming, stroke instruction, and aquatic fitness

Adult swim lessons/aquatic training$45 for one (1) 30-minute lesson; or $60 for one (1) 60-minute lesson.

Adult Personal Training-Suitable for all fitness levels from beginner to advanced athletes. Individual and group rates are available with sessions ranging from 30 to 60 minutes.

Community, connection, and recreation are important values for the members of Bay Harbor Yacht Club.  BHYC is proud to be a family-friendly space and dedicated to providing an abundance of educational, social, and athletic activities for our junior members.

From Tots to Teens, BHYC's Junior programs offer a safe and caring environment and provide a balance of fun, learning and adventure.

Our youngest members learn and play through games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming and more during our summertime Junior Camp. Our teen and tween members make lifelong friendships and learn new skills with participation in thoughtfully planned field trips, athletic camps, and educational workshops. 2024 Clipper Yacht Harbor Sausalito CA

Clipper Yacht Harbor is home to Sausalito’s only sport fishing fleet. Each boat features the latest and most advanced fish finding and navigation equipment available. All vessels are U.S. Coast Guard certified.

The Sport fishing vessels can be chartered for the challenge and excitement of local sportfishing, whale watching & nature observing, or for a special occasion.
