New Superyacht Destroyed In Spectacular Blaze Off Formentera
2022 is not a good year to be a superyacht...

A pristine, white 44m superyacht now looks like the burnt bottom of a paella pan. The superyacht caught fire off the coast of Formentera on its first ever season on the Mediterranean. The crew and passengers all escaped unscathed, but the same can’t be said for the yacht.
Aria SF, a spanking new superyacht which was only delivered in July 2022, has been destroyed by fire while sailing off the coast of Formentera (a beautiful island just over 20km south of Ibiza). The yacht is 44m long. According to the area’s Maritime Rescue service, the 7 crew members and 9 passengers are all safe, having been rescued by the Maritime Rescue team.
The Maritime Rescue service also announced, some seven hours ago (as of the time of writing) that the fire had been almost completely extinguished. Diariodeibiza.es reports that the smoke could be seen from as far away as Ibiza. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

According to El Pais the call for help went out at about 5pm, and it was then that the Maritime Rescue service sent out the Salvamar Acrux and the Guaramar Concepcion Arenal, which went to exacuate passengers and crew from the striken vessell and to put out the flames. Once the fire is out, El Pais reports, the Guardamar Concepcion Arenal will tow what’s left of the burnt superyacht to Ibiza.
According to The Superyacht Times , the yacht had a swimming pool, several lounges, five bedrooms and a gym. Aria SF also, Boat International reports, “was the first hull in the ISA GT 45 series and was due to make her world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.”

Various superyachts have caught fire this year. The multi-million dollar 27 metre Sanlorenzo SX88, for instance, was destroyed in Valencia in April after an alleged fault occurred with the lithium batteries.
In January, too, a fire at Ferretti Shipyard in Cattolica destroyed what appeared to be the Ferretti Yachts 1000, with as many as five fire brigades being called to the scene.

Earlier this year DMARGE spoke to founder of BLC Yachts, Candas Balci , who has previously worked as a marina manager and a luxury yacht manager, to ask about superyacht protocols when it comes to fires. Balci told DMARGE that there are long procedures and trainings to avoid fires breaking out on board, “but at the end of the day all yachts are highly flammable.”
He added: “If it is fire you can put out in 3-5 minutes, it is always better to move the boat outside of [the] marina, far from other yachts and people, and continue your fire fighting somewhere safe.”
“Generally, this ends up with the yacht sinking, due to all the water pressured to the yacht to put down the fire. After the yacht is capsized, insurance companies come and check if it will be covered. Generally, they do, and lift out the burnt yacht in some dry dock to investigate the fire.” Candas Balci
“But they have some items on their policies to not pay the coverage, therefore everything on your yacht must be legal, starting from the flag registry, manning on board and crew certificates. Otherwise, there will be hard days for the owner to get his money from insurance.”

Luxury yacht engulfed in ball of flames off Spanish coast
Share this with
This is the dramatic moment a luxury yacht caught fire off the Spanish island of Formentera.
Footage showed the 88-foot vessel engulfed in flames, with plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.
The Italian-designed cruiser was anchored off the beach of Es Cavall d’En Borràs in the Ses Salines Natural Park near where Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days.
Five crew members and 12 passengers scrambled to abandon the vessel in a race against the time.
Only one of the crew members, a 39-year-old Spaniard, suffered minor burns and needed hospital treatment, the regional emergency response coordinators said.
Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the fire.
Flames could be seen spreading throughout the yacht in just a matter ofminutes, turning it into a fireball.
Local media reported that the vessel belonged to professional poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez, aka ‘The Lion’, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.
It was not immediately clear this morning if the people on board were tourists who had chartered the yacht or guests of the owner.
Their nationalities have also not yet been made public either.
The alarm was sounded around 6pm on Saturday, with Spanish coastguards sent to the scene.
The yacht was towed further out to sea where the fire was put out.

New £20m superyacht destroyed by fire weeks after delivery to owner
Crew and passengers escape after Aria SF catches fire while anchored off Spanish island of Formentera
A brand-new £20m superyacht has been destroyed by fire in the Balearics weeks after it was delivered to its multimillionaire owner, the Italian car industry boss Paolo Scudieri.
The 43.7-metre Aria SF caught fire on Thursday afternoon while anchored at Cala Saona, on the west coast of Formentera, according to Salvamento Marítimo , the Spanish sea search and rescue agency.
Seven crew members and nine passengers on the ship were unharmed and evacuated to other boats nearby, but the Aria is thought to be unsalvageable. The cause and origin of the fire are as yet unknown. The yacht will be towed to Ibiza later on Friday.
The yacht, which had a gym and a pool and could accommodate up to 10 guests across five staterooms, was delivered to Scudieri late last month .
Scudieri’s suite on the main deck included a private lounge with a skylight, a terrace and direct access to an outdoor lounge via a private staircase.
The yacht, made by the Italian firm ISA, was due to make her debut at the Monaco yacht show in September.
Scudieri, the president of Adler-Hp Pelzer Group, an automotive parts supplier, is estimated to have built up a $500m fortune. He owns a Ferrari that he races in the Ferrari Challenge , a race series for Ferrari owners.
In May a superyacht estimated to be worth £6m sank while it was moored in a marina in Torbay , south-west England, after firefighters battled to extinguish a fire onboard.

Formentera superyacht bursts into flames as passengers escape for their lives
Twelve passengers and five crew scrambled to abandon ship as they raced against the flames engulfing the 88ft Italian-designed megayacht that was anchored off Es Cavall d'en Borras beach off Formentera

This is the dramatic moment a 88-foot luxury yacht goes up in flames off the paradise Mediterranean island of Formentera.
Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the blaze take hold as thick black smoke rose high into the sky above the stricken vessel . Five crew and 12 passengers are said to have been on board the yacht but were able to abandon it in time despite the speed with which the fire engulfed the Italian-designed cruiser.
Terrifying video shows the flames roaring through the vessel, which is burnt back to little more than its frame in several places. The fire is thought to have ripped through the vessel in a matter of moments, sending it up in a massive fireball that could be seen from neighbouring Ibiza.
Only one of the crew members, described as a 39-year-old Spaniard who suffered minor burns, needed hospital treatment according to regional emergency response coordinators. The alarm was sounded around 6pm yesterday while the yacht was anchored off Es Cavall d’en Borras beach in the Ses Salines Natural Park.
Spanish coastguards confirmed this afternoon the yacht that went up in flames was called Irmao and it had sunk off a natural landmark called Punta de Sa Pedrera in Formentera. They shared a statement published alongside footage of coastguard vessel Acrux towing the stricken yacht further out to sea before it disappeared under the water.
It read: “Yesterday a fire occurred on board Irmao off of Formentera. Private vessels rescued the 17 people on board. Our centre in the Majorcan capital Palma mobilised Acrux which towed the yacht which was on fire, but it sank.” It was not immediately clear why the blaze had started.
The fine sand beach, one of the best in Formentera off Ibiza where Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days, is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach. The yacht has been named locally as Irmao, which is based in Ibiza and marketed online as being available for “out-of-this-world charter vacations." It sleeps 12 in a VIP cabin, one double cabin and four twin cabins and charters for nearly £40,000 a week in high season.
One unconfirmed local report said the vessel belonged to Spanish poker shark Diego Gomez Gonzales, who also goes by "The Lion", according to Olive Press. Gonzales, 34, earned his nickname after attending the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague dressed in a fully-body lion costume. It's currently unknown if Gonzales was on board at the time or whether it was being rented.
Gonzales was reportedly born in Madrid in 1988 and while growing up he started playing the card game with school pals and members of his family. As he got older he was drawn into the world of online poker before getting a place on the Spanish poker circuit. At the same tournament where he wore the lion suit, he came fifth and scored a whopping £200,000 prize.
The yacht was anchored off one of Formentera's most-stunning beaches. The island itself is one of the Balearics and is situated next to Ibiza. It is host to a number of world-famous bars, including El Tiburon and Beso Beach.
It is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach.
The nationalities of those on board have not yet been made public. Spanish coastguards responded to the emergency by towing the yacht further out to sea and assisting in putting out the flames. Last summer a £20 million superyacht owned by wealthy Italian businessman Paolo Scudieri went up in flames off the coast of Ibiza.
The 150ft vessel Aria SF caught fire on August 11, just a month after being delivered to its multi-millionaire owner. Spanish coastguards sent two rescue boats to the area as the nine passengers and seven crew on board abandoned ship after a Mayday call following a failed attempt to put out the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries. The black smoke the fire caused could be seen as far away as Majorca.

Now, professionals hired by the owner, who took over the smoldering remains of ‘Aria SF ‘ on Saturday, must take care of its refloating , explained Salvamento. In the meantime, they are working on conditioning work to prepare the operation.
Spillage a concern after the fire
The embers of the fire had not been extinguished precisely to avoid unbalancing the vessel with the loads of extinguishing material, and thus increase the likelihood of sinking. However, the structure was badly damaged. With the new situation, the risk of contamination by spillage is of concern, although the vessel remains under close surveillance and the professionals in charge of the structure must keep Salvamento Martítimo informed at all times of the progress of the work.

THIS is the dramatic moment a £20million superyacht erupted into flames - just one month after its millionaire owner bought it.
An unstoppable inferno engulfed the 150ft vessel off the coast of Formentera on Thursday afternoon, destroying the luxury liner.
Plumes of black smoke billowed over the Mediterranean as the fire tore through the extravagant superyacht in front of horrified locals.
Skippers in Cala Saona, on the west coast of the idyllic island, watched on helplessly as the passengers desperately disembarked the boat.
Footage of the fiery incident shows the majority of the exorbitant Aria SF overrun with flames as it smoulders under the Spanish sun.
The megabucks yacht only left the shipyard last month after being sold in 2019 to wealthy Italian entrepreneur Paulo Scudieri.

Just weeks after it was delivered to its new owner, it has now been decimated by the scorching flames.
Spanish coastguards frantically sent two rescue boats to the area as the nine passengers and seven crew on board abandoned ship.
They issued a Mayday call at around 5pm local time after being unable to put out the ferocious fire.
Those on board the £20million vessel are all understood to have safely evacuated the superyacht, with no injuries reported.

Thick black smoke from the inferno could be seen from as far away as the neighbouring island of Ibiza.
The cause of the fire currently remains unknown but an investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
The incident is sure to sting the owner, uber-rich businessman Scudieri, who had hardly hit the water in his new toy before it was destroyed.
The 61-year-old is the chairman of car interior components producer Gruppo Addler, which was founded by his father Achille in 1956.
His net worth is said to be around a staggering £410million.
The father-of-four, who lives in Naples, is Monaco’s Ambassador for Tourism and the founder of a group that owns 19 restaurants in Italy.
It was not immediately clear if he was on board the burning boat, although specialised yachting websites say the vessel is not currently available for charter.
The superyacht that went up in flames, which boasted a swimming pool, five bedrooms and a gym, was due to make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival later this year.
It is thought to have been towed to Ibiza by a Coastguard vessel after the flames were doused.
A spokesman for the Spanish Coastguard Service, speaking after the fire was nearly out late on Thursday, confirmed: "The seven crew members and nine passengers are all safe.

Watch: 33m superyacht goes up in flames and sinks in Ibiza
The Bilgin motor yacht Good Vibes caught fire yesterday afternoon (August 2) in Ibiza. It is understood the yacht currently remains half-sunk in the port of Ibiza, after fire teams battled for five hours to extinguish the flames.
According to local media reports, the superyacht was “sailing” through the Es Freus marine reserve between Ibiza and Formentera at the time of the incident.
When the fire broke out, a commercial vessel stepped in to tow the boat to an empty dock in Ibiza port in order to help fire crews access the yacht.
It is understood that the blaze began in the engine room at around 2.30pm local time. After multiple fire teams battled the flames, the fire was put out around 8pm local time.

Formentera Coast Yacht Fire: 17 People Rescued Safely
Introduction
A distressing incident unfolded off the picturesque coast of Formentera as a 30-meter yacht became engulfed in flames. The yacht fire occurred near the renowned Cavall d’en Borràs area, in close proximity to the popular Tiburón and Beso Beach restaurants. With 17 individuals on board, including both crew members and passengers, the situation required swift action from maritime authorities to ensure the safety of all those involved.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
As the yacht fire broke out around six o’clock in the evening, Salvamento Marítimo swiftly initiated a response. The yacht, named ‘Irmao’ and built in 1996, was consumed by the blaze for reasons yet unknown. The flames were primarily concentrated in the cockpit area at the stern, as visible in accompanying images and videos.
Miraculously, all 17 individuals on board managed to evacuate the vessel without major harm. However, one crew member, a 39-year-old Spanish man, suffered minor burns and received immediate medical attention at Formentera hospital.
Towing Operation Challenges
The maritime authorities’ vessel, ‘Salvamar Acrux,’ was promptly dispatched from the port of Ibiza to mitigate the situation. By around seven o’clock in the evening, the towing operation to move the burning yacht away from other nearby boats was underway. This operation, however, faced complications as the ropes were affected by the fire as well. Despite the challenges, authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of other vessels in the vicinity.
Minimal Environmental Impact
As the towing operation progresses, Salvamento Marítimo has reported that no significant pollution has arisen from the incident. This reassurance comes as a relief, considering the ecological impact such an incident could potentially have on the pristine waters and coastal environment of Formentera.
Visual Impact and Island-wide Awareness
The billowing column of black smoke arising from the yacht fire was visible across the island of Formentera and even reached the neighboring island of Ibiza. The visual impact of the incident underscores the interconnectedness of the islands and the importance of effective emergency response to safeguard both human lives and the natural surroundings.
The successful rescue of all 17 individuals from the burning yacht off the Formentera coast stands as a testament to the swift and coordinated efforts of maritime authorities. As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, this incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks that maritime activities can entail and the importance of stringent safety measures to prevent such emergencies in the future.
