Lagoon 60 first look: New catamaran with several innovations

The new Lagoon 60 features hull sides that hinge down offering an extremely wide area for entertaining and relaxing at anchor

This full flybridge design fills a big slot that previously existed between the Lagoon 55 that was launched in 2021 and the more lavishly appointed Sixty 5. The new Lagoon 60’s huge aft cockpit can be fully opened out onto the water, including hull sides that hinge down like butterfly wings, creating an area even wider than the yacht’s generous 32ft beam allows.

There’s also a large forward cockpit on the same level as the saloon, and with direct access, making this an ideal yacht for larger parties.

Layout options include five cabins with a bridgedeck galley, or four cabins with the galley in the port hull, accessed by its own stairs. This version also has a smaller bar area on the bridgedeck, along with a larger saloon.

As with the 55, the rig is stepped further forward than on earlier models and is fitted with overlapping headsails. Naval architect VPLP says these offer more flexibility and efficiency on a boat of this type than the near ubiquitous non-overlapping jibs of today’s yachts.

The towering air draught of almost 100ft (30m) allows a generous sail area, even though the flybridge means the boom of this multi-story vessel is several metres above the waterline. Despite an unladen displacement of 32 tonnes, if the Lagoon 55 and 51 (launched 2022) are anything to go by, the Lagoon 60 will sail a lot better than the enormous windage suggests.

It’s a format that’s now well proven – Lagoon celebrates 40 years in business this year and has built more than 7,000 yachts. The first Lagoon 60 is already complete and will initially premiere at an open event at the yard in Bordeaux, rather than at La Grande Motte. It will feature Lagoon’s innovative new furling boom system for easier sail handling.

Modular front and aft cockpits , s weeping flybridge , and an unparalleled interior volume for a mid-size catamaran, make this yacht feel much larger than her 46-foot length. Lagoon 46 designers put to work their year of expertise to achieve world-class seaworthiness, ease of sailing, and performance. And the larger sailing plan, shorter boom and a self-tacking jib come together to make sailing the Lagoon 46 a great joy.

Comfort at Sea

Those that relish open air, sun and wind will immediately gravitate to the Lagoon 46’s sweeping flybridge. Access the flybridge via built-in steps on either side . Once atop the bridge, visibility, handling and comfort underway are optimized by the centered rigging and helm. There is plenty of room for passengers to enjoy the view with plush cushioned seating and double sunbeds.

Both fore and aft, there is no shortage of generous living spaces for socializing or finding your own spot under the sun. The foredeck features cushioned seating and sunbeds , which also houses 3 large storage lockers. Aft, the beamy cockpit allows for large gatherings, and owners can choose between traditional davits, or an electric hydraulic dinghy platform. 

Open-Air Ambience

Inside the saloon , Nauta Design takes maximum advantage of the generous volume by creating a refined and functional living space. Large windows provide natural light throughout, and sliding windows to the fore and aft cockpits provide ventilation and a breezy, open-air ambience. 

The aft-facing galley is large and well-equipped with the conveniences of home. And fine finishes and cabinet work grace the interior spaces throughout.

The large interior volume carries through to the below deck cabins, where layout options include a 3-cabin/3-bath version with an impressive owner’s suite, or a 4-cabin/4-bath version .

Lagoon 42 (Mexico Pacific)

S/V Korra is a 2018 Lagoon 42 catamaran, for sale by owner. Korra has been owned and actively maintained by a full-time cruising couple since 2020. She is a 3-cabin owner’s version and is extremely well outfitted for blue-water cruising.

Lagoon 40 (Caribbean)

S/V Blue Iris is a 2019 Lagoon 40 catamaran, for sale by owner. She has been in charter in BVI for past 5 years minus 2 years during the pandemic. Regular maintenance with yearly hauling out checked over and bottom paint. Priced to sell in BVI.  Once we bring her to the US, the price will be much higher.

The 40 is endowed with enhanced performance. The larger sail plan than other Lagoon models ensures a better sail surface/displacement ratio, making the 40 a fast and seaworthy boat. The decision to move the mast further aft, arising directly from VPLPs experience in racing, has many advantages. For ease of handling, the 40 has a self-tacking jib and a shorter boom. For more performance, the 40 has a large foretriangle offering a greater choice of foresails and a high-aspect mainsail, enabling use of less disturbed air higher up.

On deck, space and comfort are combined with a new aft cockpit layout like that of the 42. This space is open to the sea, with a dining table to port that can accommodate up to twelve guests, a relaxation area on the same side, and a seat on the aft crossbeam. The ergonomic helm station can be accessed from the cockpit or the deck, affording continuous communication between the helmsman and the rest of the crew. The skirts are wide, with a large platform, to enjoy the sea with feet in the water as well as to facilitate access to the dinghy and enable an easy and safe climb aboard.

S/V Holy Cattitude is a 2020 Lagoon 42 catamaran, for sale by owner. Commissioned April 5, 2020 in Puerto Rico, we feel the Lagoon 42’ was a perfect fit for our transition into retirement. From our Puerto Rico home-base, Holy Cattitude kept us safe throughout the Caribbean, this past 4 years.

Holy Cattitude features new hull polishing and bottom paint in January of 2024, as well as Victron control station and charger in 2023. She also had her engines serviced in June of 2023 and has had her sail drive serviced in January of 2024.

We Explored the Spanish Virgin Islands exclusively, our first year, while honing our catamaran sailing skills and familiarity with our new 42. Lagoon 380 (California)

S/V Misha is a 2000 Lagoon 380 catamaran, for sale by owner. Misha is hull number 15, which if you check the reviews, was better built than later models.

This catamaran has had only 2 owners, NEVER chartered, and is in excellent condition. Only 700 hours on the engines. Custom interior upholstery and curtains. A joy to sail, super easy and fun. The reason for the low engine hours is due to the fact that the original owner lived in Arizona and only used the catamaran in the summer on the San Francisco Bay. We spent the last couple of months fixing everything on the boat that was deemed an issue in the recent survey including brand new anti-slip and top paint. The hulls are also freshly painted with Seahawk and the hulls have been polished to bring the exterior of the boat to a sparkling new finish.

Lagoon 500 (Florida)

S/V Wonder is a 2008 Lagoon 500 catamaran, for sale by owner. She has had only TWO owners and has NEVER been chartered. This vessel has barely been used, has been well taken care of and customized for long passages. She is ready for any passage and perfect for liveaboards! Includes Starlink Antenna.

Wonder is fully equipped with everything that you could ask for, from two electrical diving compressors to fixed stainless steel lifelines that are also extended higher up for even more safety. Duplicate and back-up systems, including Raymarine and Garmin navigation equipment, can be found throughout the vessel, as well as a large inventory of extra parts, filters and equipment.

The transom (sugar scoops) have been extended by 1.07m for more stream line sailing, with pull-down ladders on each side. After 20 years experience as a Lagoon dealer, I made this catamaran perfect for sail and live on board. I removed many electronic complications such as Dometics, Yanmar engines, electronic injectors, and electronic fuel pumps. They are now without electronics. Engine controls are mechanical, no more electronic Micro Commander.

After I repaired several boats with electronic damage for lightning or magnetic field, I saw that they remain in the sea without any possibility to start the engines, without electronics, with the need to be towed into port.
