A view of boats moored at Kinsale Port

  • On the water

Kinsale town was founded in the 12th century with The Battle of Kinsale in 1601 being a very important event in shaping the history of Kinsale. Kinsale Harbour is flanked by two classic examples of 17th century star shaped forts, Charles Fort and James Fort. Kinsale is a very popular town for its history, food, colourful streetscapes, craft shops, galleries, pubs, restaurants, music, events and warm welcome. The narrow winding streets are best explored on foot.

Kinsale is an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful South and South West coasts of Ireland. Kinsale marks the starting point of the Wild Atlantic Way, a 2500km touring route of the spectacular Atlantic coastline. The Kinsale Yacht Club marina caters for all type of craft, from the day sailor, leisure or pleasure craft to the super yacht.

History of KYC

KYC WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1953

Kinsale Yacht Club (KYC) was established in 1953. The club was first located in two cottages opposite the slip at Scilly, across the harbour from the current location and the first Commodore was John H. Thuillier.

The current clubhouse was purchased in the early 1960’s; Dick Hegarty oversaw the purchase as the Club solicitor. Over the decades the Club has been extended with the most recent refurbishment in 2013.

In 1978, the Club and its members funded and built the first marina. The Marina was extended in 2003 to its current layout.

Sailing & Racing

By the mid-1950’s, there were six boats racing in the club comprising of a dragon called ‘Sleuth’, two colleens, ‘Pinkeen’ and ‘Spalpeen’, an Uffa Ace, Dick Hegarty’s cruiser ‘Bedouin’ and a jollyboat sailed by the 70-year old Commodore Brigadier General Dorman. Jeanot Petch made an exotic addition to the already varied fleet when he built a Prout catamaran in 1957.

The fleet would leave the Bulman Buoy to port or starboard according to the wind, as the Commodore did not want to gybe that far out to sea! Later a 45 gallon drum was placed upriver and used as an upwind mark until the new bridge was built in the 1970’s. All the boats at that time were kept on swing moorings in the river. The Cork Harbour Dragon Fleet, based in the Royal Munster Yacht Club in Crosshaven, now the Royal Cork Yacht Club, moved to Kinsale.

Over time, dinghy fleets of Albacores, Mirrors, Flying Fifteens, Fireballs and Enterprises developed and junior sailing instruction began. Junior sailing now encompasses Optimists, Lasers and Toppers. One design racing takes place weekly  in International Dragons and Squibs. Cruiser Classes I, II, III & White Sail also race weekly.

Championships

HOST OF VARIOUS CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the 1970’s, the Club started hosting Regional and National Championships. In 1977 the club hosted the World Fireball Championships and the Dragon Gold Cup and started to develop its widely recognised race management teams. Here are some of the Championships KYC has hosted:

1984 – Flying Fifteen World Championships 1998 – Mirror European Championships 2003 – Dragon Europeans 2008 – Squib National Championships 2008 – Flying Fifteen European Championships 2012 – Dragon Gold Cup 2013 – IFDS World Championships 2014 – Dragon National Championships 2015 – Optimist Munster Championships 2016 – Squib National Championships 2016 – Dragon National Championships 2016 – Topper Munster Championships 2017 – Dragon South Coast Championships 2017 – Half Ton Classic Cup 2017 – 1720 European Championships 2018 – President’s Cup & Hanse National Championships 2018 – Optimist National Championships 2019 – 1720 European Championships 2019 – Dragon National Championships 2019 – Half Ton Cup 2020 – Laser Munster Championships 2021 – Squib Southcoast Championship 17 – 18 July 2021 – Dragon National Championship 2 – 5 Sept Solitaire du Figaro on 19 occasions from 1974 Sovereigns cup biannually since 1995

Real-life Succession in Kinsale as Billionaire's €80m superyacht pulls in for a pint at the Dock

Owner James Berwind is a fascinating character with a big story - and that's not a bad little boat

If you're missing the mega-hit TV drama Succession - you should take a trip to Kinsale to have a look at the real thing, in the form of the superyacht Scout and its billionaire owner, heir to a massive, shared family fortune.

The gorgeous yacht 'Scout' is tied up in front of the famous Dock pub this morning, taking up quite a lot of the Castlepark Marina as it becomes the first super-yacht of the summer to visit Cork Harbour.

The Scout as an impressive 209ft superyacht built in Holland in 2019 - originally, it is believed, to a design specified by the members of the Heineken family (yes, THAT Heineken) but bought by American James Berwind in 2020 for a price believed to be around €80m.

A deep ocean cruiser, she can comfortably cater for up to 10 guests and 14 staff and with its classic lines and relatively subdued design (for a superyacht at least) is considered one of the coolest yachts in the world. The fact that it has amenities including a fully equipped gym, cinema room, 3 bars, and a huge sun deck with a jacuzzi also helps on the desirability front.

kinsale yacht

However, it's the story of the owner, James Berwind (believed to be in Kinsale with his beloved Scout, named for one of the family dogs) that is even more fascinating.

The Florida-based Berwind is an heir to a vast, shared family fortune and with his brothers and sisters, part owner of an international global corporation - but he has forged a very different path in life to his father and grandfather before him.

His famous forebears Edward Julius and Charles Frederick Berwind were the founders of the Berwind-White Coal Mining company in America in the 1860s, which became a vast mining conglomerate that it still privately held in a family trust today. It has diversified from mining into areas including manufacturing and real estate. The Berwind Corporation's real estate holdings alone are worth around $3bn dollars.

However, while the family made its fortune in fossil fuels - James Berwind and his long-time partner Kevin Clark have devoted themselves to philanthropy, mostly focused on animal welfare and environmentalism, a path that could hardly be more different from that chosen by his coal-baron forebears.

His father Charles Graham Berwind was in the coal business and kept up the family passions for pastimes like Polo and Yachting.

With a personal fortune estimated to be around €500m and as a part of the family trust overseeing the Berwind Corporation, James Berwind is an architect who - along with his siblings - runs the international philanthropy foundation Spring Point Partners , supporting projects and people involved in environmental and community development worldwide.

Their mission is equality, justice and protecting the environment, a far cry from their forebears who made their vast family wealth in the coal mines of the United States.

And James himself, who sold his Palm Beach, Florida water-side mansion for $26.7m in 2021, has founded and runs several animal shelters and charities that protect vulnerable animals.

kinsale yacht

He is reported to have made the yacht Scout a 'semi-permanent home, to be used to explore the world" along with his long-term partner Kevin Clark. And you might see the man around Kinsale over the coming days, the yacht has dropped in after a visit to Dublin and will be on its way again shortly.

Kinsale Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We recently had dinner with friends at Kinsale Yacht Club. The food was spectacular, I had the Hake with a parmesan crust and it was to die for. The veg was seasonal and oh so fresh, none of the usual overcooked mush here ! The... wine situation is weird, we couldn't order from our table and put on the bill, we had to get it and pay for it at the bar. Guess the bar and restaurant are run by different people. It a busy yacht club with plenty of sailor types around. The food however far exceeded what we would have expected in a Club and certainly was far superior in both taste and value to anything else we had in the town of Kinsale. More

had a great dinner by mistake at the kinsale yacht club. we just found out it was open to the public, a new venture! the interior has recently been remodelled with a large balcony and restaurant seating in the window with a view of the... harbour. we asked who was doing the food our server mentioned Kevin the chef and owner at Forage and Find a local catering business was in charge of all the food. we decided to go for it, we ordered pork belly, oh my, super moist. a seasonal salad of quinoa and herbs. and the monkfish with beetroot essence, so freggin tasty! every bite was a delight. we were stuffed by the end so decided to share dessert, we went for the chocolate nemesis cake, which was heavenly light and devilishly rich. what a treat! we will definitely come back! the only thing we would say is there needed to be some background music, im not sure why they don't have any? on a sunny day ask to sit out on the balcony. The menu is very limited and the setting as a club house with fairly basic furnishings lacks any ambiance, however these are the only negatives and the only reason I haven't given a 5 star rating. As stated the menu was limited however the food... received was extremely well prepared and presented. I commenced with the pulled beef arancini served a portion of 4 with a nice little center salad constituting a very fine starter. This I followed with fish and chips served with mint peas a tartar sauce and some very nice chips, also ordered a side salad at €2, beat that for value. My partner had the burger which looked well and ate every bit as good as it looked. Finished off by a chocolate tart and an eton mess, all at what I consider to be very good value for money and eaten on a fine Saturday evening looking out the glass curtain walling out over the harbour. Also a word for the very nice friendly young man who served us, and called by regularly to check on everything, without being in anyway obtrusive. Definitely worth a visit for good quality and good value for money fair, there appears to always be a table available but lacking atmosphere for sure. More

Recent visit to Kinsale Yacht Club ended up with us deciding to dining within the club, not to be confused with normal club food this is fine upmarket restaurant dining albeit within the club house 3 mains consisted of fresh fillet of John Dory on... a bed of leak enfused mash potato with a delicate sauce with accompanied crab claws surrounding the plate, 2nd dish was a light lamb curry without cream deep eastern flavours distributed throughout the dish 3rd dish the club burger 100 % local produce cooked to perfection decent solid dish following a heavy day on the water All round well above par food for a sailing club menu has to be experienced to enjoy the quality Excellent variety of wines from the bar to complement the meal More

Had a wonderful meal tonight at KYC. Started with a divine strawberry salad with fennel, nuts and it was excellent. I've not had such an interesting combination of tastes. NWext I had Hake. Done to perfection with pureed cauliflower courgettes, beetroot. It all worked perfectly.... The staff were so friendly and hubby and I really enjoyed the whole meal. The chef was really excellent. I hope the sailing club appreciate the quality. More

This restaurant has it all: good food, great service, gorgeous views! We were there for a family meal in July. Although it was very busy and we had to wait quite a while for our table, it was all worth it when the food came.... Kinsale is famous for seafood so we ordered accordingly, and we were not disappointed. The fish pie was rich with all kinds of seafood and the crab claws starter was outstanding! All in all, our party of 6 had a most joyful reunion meal. More

Cruising with friends our first port of call was the yacht club. What a treat !. The interior has recently been remodelled with a large balcony and restaurant seating overlookoing the harbour. The shower facilities were faultless. We ate in the restaurant and four of... us shared a lovely antipasta starter, then I had the monkfish with beetroot essence, every bite was a delight. We finished with two yummy desserts that we shared as we couldn't manage one each. Chef Kevin O'Connell is outstanding. More

A great place to sit and have a glass of wine. Very friendly an excellent facilities. Lovely sheltered bar area and terrace. Very family friendly.

We attended Kinsale Yacht club as part of an organised event over the weekend of 5-7 September 2014. The entire experience was exceptionally good and great value. Anyone who could find cause to complain must be completely irrational ! On Saturday evening over 100 people... sat down to dinner, very comfortably seated in the open upstairs lounge. The decor & furnishings were exceptionally comfortable and inviting. The bar & catering staff were most courteous and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble and they all had a 'can do' attitude. Every member of staff was dressed immaculately and was genuinely polite and professional. Dinner was superb and beyond expectation. Main course was a choice of beef stroganoff or a fish dish, served with broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes or salad. Dessert was a dressed fresh fruit salad followed by tea or coffee. The food and service were fantastic in every respect. Bar prices were as one would expect in a members club and really good value in a most welcoming atmosphere. Kinsale YC gets my highest recommendation and I would encourage visitors to the town to make a point of enjoying the marvellous facilities there. Hope to return again in the future. A real 5* experience, not to be missed. Well done KYC !! More

Simply Blue Group Sovereign’s Cup Launched at Kinsale Yacht Club with 60% of Entries Already Received for June Regatta

Sixty per cent of the entries have already been received for June’s Simply Blue Group Sovereign’s Cup at Kinsale Yacht Club on the south coast of Ireland. The 15th edition of the biennial regatta will run from 21st to 24th June 2023 and incorporates the 1720 European sportsboat Championships. A strong fleet is expected, with entries of up to 105 boats from the US, UK and Ireland arriving at the West Cork port.

International entries include Ron O’Hanley’s Cookson 50 Privateer from New York, as Afloat reported in January, and there is a strong domestic take up for the KYC event. Entries from as far afield as Carrickfergus Sailing Club on Belfast Lough to Tralee Bay in County Kerry have been received.

This year, a new prize has been launched for the first Lady Helm. The special award has been created by Rosemary Roy and will be presented for the first time in June.

Simply Blue Group, headquartered in Cork, is a leading developer focused on pioneering blue economy projects such as floating offshore wind, e-Fuels, wave energy and low-impact aquaculture which, they say, are all in harmony with the oceans.

With a strong presence in Kinsale, Simply Blue Group’s Emerald Floating Wind Project, situated in the Celtic Sea off the south coast of Kinsale, will utilise cutting-edge technology to construct a wind farm which, upon completion, will have a total installed capacity of up to 1.3 GW, the equivalent to powering 1 million Irish homes.

Hugh Kelly, Co-Founder and Group Managing Director of Simply Blue Group, who will compete in the event onboard the J122 Jelly Baby, said: “We are delighted to support the Kinsale Yacht Club’s Sovereign’s Cup this year. Driven by a vision to work with the oceans and is headquartered in Cork, we’re very proud to be supporting this great biennial event in Kinsale. With racing taking place in both the inner and outer harbours, an exciting four days are expected for the local community and tourists alike.”

“Like the competitive sailors at this event, Simply Blue Group aims to harness the wind’s power through the development of our offshore floating wind projects and to make a valuable contribution to meeting Europe’s green electricity demand.”

Anthony W. Scannell, Vice Commodore Kinsale Yacht Club, Regatta Director, said: “We are delighted to have Simply Blue Group as the title sponsor for the regatta, which is returning to full strength post-Covid. Simply Blue Group and Kinsale Yacht Club share a common interest in efficiently harnessing wind energy. We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support for the event by Cork County Council, recognising the commercial value that the regatta brings to the town of Kinsale and the wider area of West Cork.”
