Scallywag First to Finish Transatlantic

Lee Seng Huang’s 100-foot maxi SHK Scallywag entered the history books by winning line honors in the Transatlantic Race 2019. This accolade continues a prestigious, ancient lineage started by James Gordon Bennett Jr.’s Henrietta in 1866 and since including Charlie Barr on Wilson Marshall’s record setting three-masted schooner Atlantic in 1905 to a century later, Robert Miller’s Mari Cha IV, winner of the Rolex Transatlantic Race in 2005. The New York Yacht Club organized the first race in 1866 and this year was joined by the Royal Yacht Squadron, Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club.

The Andy Dovell-designed maxi crossed the Royal Yacht Squadron line off Cowes with a passage time of 10 days, 2 hours, 13 minutes and 19 seconds. Skippered by David Witt, the Australian now living in Hong Kong, SHK Scallywag ‘s crew included Anniemeike Bes (Haarlem, the Netherlands), Lucas Chapman (The Junction, Australia), Tom Clout (Sydney, Australia), Nick Crones (Sydney, Australia), Pete Cumming (Warsash, U.K.), Ian Flemming (Hong Kong), Ferdinand Galleta (Bauang, Philippines), Alex Gough (Brisbane, Australia), Jack Mcartney (Paddington, Australia), Ben Piggott (Thirrol, Australia), Trystan Seal (Cilcennin, Wales), Miles Seddon (Lymington, U.K.) and Charlie Wyatt (Brisbane, Australia).

If there were any records for this year’s race it was for the slow pace as the leaders found themselves having to take dramatic detours to avoid windless high-pressure systems. In the race’s last edition in 2015 Jim and Kristy Clarke’s 100-foot maxi Comanche won line honors in 7 days, 11 hours, and 35 minutes, and that was also considered a relatively slow race.

For skipper Witt, a modern-day Samuel Samuels (Gordon Bennett’s skipper in 1866), the concern was making it across. “It comes with some relief. At one point it didn’t look like we were going to make it,” Witt said.

Shortly after rounding A3, the southeastern-most point of the Point Alpha ice exclusion zone, SHK Scallywag found herself nailed by prolonged gale force winds. As British navigator Miles Seddon describes: “The sea state wasn’t that bad, it was probably 2 to 2.5 meters (six to eight feet) with the occasional 3-meter wave (nine feet), but we just got caught too close to the center of the low, between the cold front closing up on the warm front. The forecast was for 25 knots max and we were prepared for gusts of probably 32, but there we were, sailing along in 42. In 42 knots things are flying around the boat and you end up on the back foot because things get damaged.”

The crew couldn’t reef the mainsail beyond the second reef point because a bolt at the top of the towering, 41-meter (134-foot) mast had started to protrude and was preventing the crew from reducing sail beyond the second reef point.

“A $3 bolt almost destroyed a $3 million mainsail,” Witt said.

Under normal circumstances they might have turned and run with the gale to reduce apparent wind, but this would have taken them into the ice exclusion zone. “We were on the ice gate, it was like being pinned to a lee shore,” observed Witt.

Unwilling to retire, all they could do in the circumstances was to go into survival mode and sail with the main feathering until the severe winds passed. Thus, the SHK Scallywag crew battened down hatches, left two people on deck and rather than follow the big wind, let them move away. According to Witt the gale force winds lasted for almost 18 hours, but it was almost another three days before the wind had reduced enough, to 10 to 12 knots, for them safely to haul someone to the top of the giant spar and release the sail.

“It has been good for us,” Witt said generally of his Transatlantic Race 2019 experience. “The biggest problem with a 100-footer is reliability. The 70s [he refers to their competition, the VO70 Wizard , which previously won the Volvo Ocean Race as Groupama 4] have been around the world. The longest race 100-footers typically do is the Sydney to Hobart, which is 600 miles.” The Transatlantic Race 2019 was by far SHK Scallywag ‘s longest race to date.

During the big winds SHK Scallywag also damaged her largest jib, the J1 when it was washed overboard while hanked on. This incident also destroyed some of the forward stanchions. According to Seddon they also took some waves that caused their tracker to become water-logged and inoperable and they also temporarily wiped out their satellite communications, although they subsequently managed to repair this.

Once back up to speed SHK Scallywag was able to make good use of the conditions prior to negotiating the top of the high pressure. In this period their top 24-hour run was 505 miles.

Witt paid tribute to the Wizard crew, who against expectation (due to having a 30-foot shorter boat) led for the majority of the Transatlantic Race 2019. “They will win under IRC and they deserve to win that. You have to realize that in 40-plus knots, you’d much rather be on a VO70. We were lucky we didn’t give up. It was only when the breeze dropped that we could catch up,” said Witt.

For Seddon, this year’s slow race came after a comparatively rip-roaring ride across four years ago on the 70-foot trimaran Phaedo in a time of just over seven days. “It is very nice to be here,” he said upon finishing. “It felt like it went on for longer than eternity! We tried to throw it away a few times. It was beautiful sailing conditions to begin with, heinous survival mode in the middle and playing catch up again. It was certainly a long one.”

Back up in fighting mode, SHK Scallywag eventually passed Wizard for a second time approaching the Scilly Isles and then basked in the light upwind conditions of the last 48 hours when they could make full use of their towering sail plan and their waterline length advantage.

SHK Scallywag dealt with an ultra-light-wind English Channel and its present strong tides remarkably well. “The only time we got slowed down was between Portland Bill and Anvil Point,” explained Seddon. “The change of tide killed the wind and the cloud cover stopped the sea breeze from developing. So we had to wait, anchor at the ready.” In fact in the half hour it took for them to ready the anchor, the first signs of a new breeze filling in were already evident.

This afternoon there was enough wind to get them through Hurst Narrows at the western end of the Solent despite their having to punch into 4.5 knots of adverse current. “In 8 to 10 knots of wind we are doing 13 knots through the water, so it didn’t affect us too badly. We knew we’d get through it,” said Seddon.

It was certainly a heart in your mouth moment for the crew of the super-maxi yacht, Scallywag.

The 100-foot racing yacht was forced to squeeze between two patrol boats just after the start of the Big Boat Challenge in Sydney, Australia.

Footage of the near collision shows Scallywag was just feet away from hitting the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services patrol boat.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, the super-maxi’s skipper, David Witt, said: “I wasn’t planning on going through the gap, I thought the maritime boat would back up, it’s supposed to get out of the way.”

“We spun the roulette wheel and came up with zero – very, very lucky,” he added.

The patrol vessel was one of eight on the water during the race assisting with traffic control on the water.

A spokesman for the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services said the congestion during the race brought them “unique challenges”.

He added that staff work closely with race organisers and “where improvements are identified in any aspect of the race, including our own conduct, they are made.”.

The Big Boat Challenge is the chance for skippers to showcase their yachts ahead of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which begins on Boxing Day.

Scallywag placed third overall in the race, losing out to its rival Wild Oats XI.

The eight times Sydney to Hobart winner won in a time of one hour, four minutes and 14 seconds.

Perpetual LOYAL crossed the line three minutes and 11 seconds later to take second while Scallywag was just over five minutes behind Wild Oats XI.

Super maxi Black Jack leads battered Sydney-Hobart fleet

SYDNEY (AP) — Super maxi Black Jack was leading a much-reduced Sydney to Hobart race fleet on Monday after strong winds and high seas forced almost a quarter of the boats to retire.

The storm forced 21 of the original 88 starters out of the race, and the other 67 were hoping for less taxing conditions after being battered by heavy southerlies through the latter part of Sunday.

While the three super maxis remained in the race, the big list of casualties included the TP52 Gweilo, which was considered one of the main contenders to win overall honors.

Monaco’s Black Jack continued to lead in the battle for line honors. She was ahead of rival super maxis LawConnect and SHK Scallywag 100,

The size of Black Jack’s lead was hard to confirm as LawConnect had issues with reporting the boat’s exact position.

Scallywag was the first out of Sydney Heads on Sunday to take the early lead. The Hong Kong boat is skippered by Australian David Witt.

Last year’s race was canceled the week before it was due to start because of coronavirus-related quarantine issues, but the 2021 edition is proceeding with mass virus-testing protocols in place. Skippers have been told boats must immediately retire from the race if a crew member receives a message from health authorities saying they have tested positive for COVID-19.

“With the co-operation of the Tasmanian government, we’ve been able to get these boats away and we are very appreciative of that,” said Cruising Yacht Club of Australia commodore Noel Cornish. “So people can go as long as they’ve had their test. They can get sailing and get their result on the way down.”

The 628 nautical-mile race (1,170 kilometers, or about 720 miles) sails from Sydney down the south coast of New South Wales state and across Bass Strait to Hobart, the capital of the island state of Tasmania.

In 2017, Comanche set the race record after finishing in 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds, beating Perpetual Loyal’s record of 1 day, 13 hours, 31 minutes and 20 seconds, set the previous year.

The record is not expected to be challenged this year, with the first boats expected to take at least two days to get to Hobart.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2023

Purchased this year by Seng Huang Lee, Scallywag is Syd Fischer’s ex Ragamuffin 100. Contested her first Sydney Hobart in 2014, finishing third on line, then second on line in 2015, after a thrilling match race from Tasman Light with Rambler. In the lead-up, was second on line to Wild Oats XI in the Transpac Race, took line honours in the Hong Kong Vietnam Race, breaking the record Fischer set with Ragamuffin 90 in 2013. The hull of this yacht was designed by Andy Dovell, but her modified deck came from Investec Loyal which Fischer purchased and raced to Hobart in 2012 and 2013.

New to racing, Lee kept the boat’s skipper, David Witt, and other Ragamuffin crew. Mods were undertaken, but the keel ram exploded in 2016 Sydney Gold Coast race while she was looking good. Scallywag broke the Groupama around New Caledonia Race monohull record in September for second overall to Beau Geste. Smashed Beau Geste’s (the TP52) Hong Kong to Hainan record in early November. Owner of the Hayman Island resort, 41 year-old Malaysian born Lee spent his formative years in Sydney. From his verandah in Elizabeth Bay, he watched the boats leave the CYCA each Boxing Day and got hooked. Meeting Witt in Hong Kong, the idea of buying Ragamuffin 100 was hatched.

Two super maxis continue to lead the Sydney to Hobart race as storms hit fleet

S YDNEY (AP) — The Sydney to Hobart fleet was reduced to 98 boats after overall honors contender Maritimo 52 was one of two retirements on a stormy first night of racing.

Rival super maxis Andoo Comanche and LawConnect remained neck-and-neck in the early hours of Wednesday as the fleet began to pass Eden on the New South Wales south coast before heading into Bass Strait.

The two favorites for line honors were some 40 miles (65 kilometers) ahead of the nearest challengers.

Race officials confirmed Maritimo had retired overnight with rigging damage, while 50-footer Sticky pulled out with electrical issues. The retirements came after line honors contender SHK Scallywag was among the three boats of the 103 starters to pull out on the first evening after the start Tuesday in Sydney harbor.

“We’re shattered, actually,” said Maritimo crew member Peter Jones. “We were trying to work a million ways around it, but at best we were going to be at 50%.”

Jones reported a southwesterly front had come through with three hours of heavy rain and high winds.

"There was as much lightning as we’d ever seen,” Jones said.

LawConnect was the first out of the harbor. The finish line of the 628-nautical mile (720-mile, 1,170-kilometer) race is at Constitution Dock in the state capital of Hobart.

The line honors record of 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes, 24 seconds was set by Comanche in 2017, after Comanche also won last year’s race . In 2022, Comanche finished at Constitution Dock in 1 day, 11 hours, 56 minutes and 48 seconds — the second-fastest time behind its 2017 race record.

Sailing milestone: A half-century of starts for a competitor in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race

SYDNEY (AP) — Lindsay May will notch a first in the 78-year history of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race when he becomes the only sailor to start it 50 times — all of them consecutively — when it begins Tuesday in Sydney harbor.

May, with three overall titles and one line-honors win, will navigate “Antipodes” in the expected 103-boat fleet in the annual race that will head down the New South Wales south coast and across often treacherous Bass Strait to the island state of Tasmania.

The finish line of the 628-nautical mile (720-mile, 1,170-kilometer) race is at Constitution Dock in the state capital of Hobart.

May’s sailing career began in 1973 , when the-then 24-year-old stepped off his surf board and on to a yacht.

“I never thought I would get to 50 and I had no idea what I was in for,” May said. “I had done very little racing. Then I went sailing here on the harbor with a mate of mine who was in the navy and I was just hooked.”

In 2006, May and his crew won handicap honors as the skipper and navigator of the 33-year-old wooden vessel Love & War. But he counts his most memorable race as the one he didn’t finish.

In 1993, when only 38 out of 104 starters finished due to poor weather conditions, May plucked fellow competitor John Quinn out of the Tasman Sea. Quinn had been washed overboard and spent nearly six hours in the water.

Last year’s fast conditions appeared to put the line honors record of one day, nine hours, 15 minutes, 24 seconds, under threat. That record was set by 100-foot super maxi Andoo Comanche in 2017, and Comanche also won last year’s race .

On Sunday, skipper John Winning Jr. suggested Andoo Comanche would defend its line honors title in any conditions as the race’s weather forecast remained unpredictable.

The Bureau of Meteorology says uncertainty remained as to wind, wave and weather conditions.

The four 100-foot super maxi yachts may have to contend with stormy conditions from late Tuesday into Wednesday, with showers, gusts and hail all possible for the far south of New South Wales and Bass Strait.

“Pack another set of thermal gear. It’ll be cold,” said SHK Scallywag skipper David Witt, another of the super maxis.

The forecast has changed throughout the week, leaving crews to suggest that having an adaptable navigator on board could be a game-changer.

“For us, it’s about trusting each person’s role on the boat,” Winning said. “We back our boat in any conditions to win the race, whether it’s upwind, downwind, light wind, reaching or whatever it is.”

Last year, Comanche finished at Constitution Dock in one day, 11 hours, 56 minutes and 48 seconds — the second-fastest time behind its 2017 record.

LawConnect, runner-up for line honors in the last three Hobarts, is Comanche’s biggest threat to clinching back-to-back wins. LawConnect, formerly known as InfoTrack and Perpetual Loyal, is particularly strong upwind.

“If we could get that all the way, that’d be awesome,” said sailing master Tony Mutter.

Super maxi LawConnect won’t shy away from the rough conditions that could come with a predicted low pressure system.

“We actually prefer it, the more tactical it is, the better for us, we feel,” Mutter said. “We kind of need that to be a thing for us to have a chance to win.”
