Jenson Button

Jenson Button feels the winds of success fill his sails at last

It wasn't a very big yacht by Monaco's usual standards, but it was enough to get some people saying that Jenson Button , in his second season in formula one, had already grown too big for his boots. And maybe it was a mistake to moor the Little Missy in the harbour during the grand prix weekend, right next to the paddock entrance.

"I wasn't a playboy," Button said this week, looking back eight years to the events which earned him a reputation that has proved hard to shift. "When things aren't going well, people try to blame something. And I didn't know that at 21 years old it was a mistake having a boat. I think I needed to get away from all the hassles and stress of formula one. But having it parked outside the paddock was maybe not the best thing."

Button has spent most of his formula one career listening to people misjudge him. Right at the start, back in January 2000, when the skinny, eager-eyed boy from Frome was awarded a contract with the Williams-BMW team less than a week after his 20th birthday, he heard such authorities as the former world champions Jackie Stewart and Jody Scheckter and the veteran team owner Ken Tyrrell claim that he was being pushed too hard by an overambitious management team and lacked the experience necessary to be let loose in a field full of 800-horsepower machines.

"I'm not sure he knows what he's getting himself into," said another world champion, Jacques Villeneuve, who welcomed Button to the BAR-Honda team three years later with a comment about how he was "like a boy band – style over substance". Some months earlier Bernie Ecclestone had tried to dissuade Dave Richards, the team's boss, from signing a young Englishman whom he felt lacked the attributes of a champion.

Two years ago, after seven seasons and a single grand prix victory, Button was still being written off. "Jenson should have won more races," Nigel Mansell observed. "He has under-performed and that is down to him. He had the opportunity and he didn't take it. There won't be any more."

There was, he did, and today the 29-year-old Button will go into the qualifying sessions for the Monaco grand prix in the lead of this season's world championship, with four wins from five races under his belt, the steering wheel of the best car in the field in his hands, and the comforting feeling of knowing that he has finally confirmed his admirers' faith.

Among them is Patrick Head, the Williams team's director of engineering, who reluctantly let Button go at the end of his first season in order to fulfil a prior commitment to Juan Pablo Montoya, and later launched an ultimately unsuccessful bid to lure him back. "We've always thought that Jenson was outstanding and we would have loved to carry on with him," Head said yesterday. "He's always had great driving skill. People have likened his style to Alain Prost's in terms of economy of effort, but although it looks very smooth it's actually lots of little movements right on the edge, very controlled. And now he has experience, calmness, judgment and other things. He's also in the right place at the right time, and good luck to him."

Head dismisses the criticisms of those who felt that, in the early years, Button was too ready to grab the rewards – the girls, the yacht, the Monaco apartment – before winning the prizes that would justify them. "It's laughable," Head said. "Tell me which racing driver doesn't like a bit of fun. All the best ones have liked chasing girls and having a good time."

Among the sceptics, until very recently, was Ross Brawn , whose name is on the nose of the car driven by Button to wins in Australia, Malaysia, Bahrain and Spain. When the former Ferrari technical director arrived at Honda at the start of last season, he knew only what he had seen from afar and he had not been particularly impressed. He needed some convincing when the engineers claimed that all Button required to become a title contender was a fast car, but the excellence of the Brawn-Mercedes BGP001 has enabled Button to validate their faith.

Brawn has been particularly impressed by how effectively Button responds to a request to put in a series of super-fast laps at a strategically important time in a race – the sort of thing the engineer learned to count on from Michael Schumacher during their glory years. Now Button's delight in his new car is matched by Brawn's admiration of his new driver. "He's really showing that he's the driver I was told he was," the team principal told CNN this week.

Button took 113 races to win his first grand prix, in Hungary three years ago. One man who knows how that felt is Jean Alesi, the veteran Frenchman who left formula one five years ago after a 201-race career in which a single victory represented a miserable reward for a great talent. Alesi also happened to be present in Barcelona just before Christmas 1999, when Button drove a formula one car for the first time at the invitation of Alain Prost.

"I saw his speed straight away," Alesi said in the Monaco paddock yesterday, "and I thought, 'He's the next one.' And in his first season he was very good. But things went wrong which were not necessarily his fault.

"It happened to me, too. You make some decisions that might not be the right ones and also things happen that are not in your control. And then your results are not good, but people don't understand why. So when I finally won my first race, it was not a pleasure. It was a deliverance. And I'm sure that's how Jenson felt."

It took Button two and a half seasons and 40 more races before he won a second grand prix, a period in which his cars became progressively more hopeless. But throughout 2007 and 2008, when he scored a total of nine championship points while Lewis Hamilton, five years his junior, swept into formula one and roared to the world title, Button's absolute refusal to complain made a profound impression on those who recognised the true dimension of his talent.

"What is happening to him now is exactly what he deserves," Alesi said. "Through all the hard times he's had, he never tried to blame anyone else. That shows what a good character he's got."

The inside story of the epic Alesi Ferrari F1 Monaco video

Monaco’s historic grand prix is often a moment to look back at the glory years of formula 1 and motor racing’s past. but this year’s event threw up something totally new when an onboard video of jean alesi lapping the famous principality in niki lauda’s 1974 ferrari 312 b3 went viral on social media..

Jonathan Noble

Jean Alesi, 1974 Ferrari 312 B3

Lucas Brito

Observed from an angle slightly above and behind the rear wing, the video offered a unique perspective of an F1 car being pushed to its limit around the Monte Carlo streets.

As Alesi darted through the iconic corners, and blasted through the tunnel, the sensation of speed accompanied to the sound of the 3-litre flat 12 engine, demonstrated the magic of a racing car in a fresh way.

In fact, so different was the angle that it almost didn’t seem real and was actually more akin to playing a sim racing game from the third-person perspective.

As the Alesi footage quickly spread around the Internet, it prompted many questions about how it was pulled off and whether any computer trickery has been deployed. Autosport tracked down the brainchild behind the project for the inside story of what happened.

The man behind it is Monaco-based video producer Lucas Brito, who runs a 3D technology video company called Virtual Reality International.

Its more regular work revolves around virtual tours of luxury real estate, yachts and businesses, and it has worked with major international clients including Heineken, Hermes and the Automobile Club of Monaco.

The ACM work led to a deal to produce some video from Monaco’s motor racing events this year. Motorsport is no stranger to Brito, his father Jayme being a well-known figure in F1 TV circles.

Having seen some footage of 360 cameras attached to road cars deliver a similar angle, Brito thought about trying it out on an F1 car.

Following discussions with Monaco chiefs, he proposed the idea but reckoned that logistical complications would make it impossible to pull off. However, just more than two weeks before the Monaco historic event, he was given the green light.

“At that moment I thought ‘wow, this is now really happening’,” Brito explained. “I had to go off do my research, order all the parts and hope they arrive in time. It was quite stressful.”

The camera used for the Alesi video was an Insta360 action camera, and it was attached to the Ferrari rear wing with a mounting stick.

The clever technology means that the stick doesn’t appear in view because it is hidden in a camera’s blind spot between the lenses. If you look closely at the Alesi footage, you can see the camera and stick in the shadow that it casts on the ground.

Jean Alesi, 1974 Ferrari 312 B3

Brito’s biggest challenge was in ensuring that the attachment between the camera stick and the Ferrari rear wing was strong enough.

He couldn’t damage the precious car, and nor could he risk the camera coming loose at 150mph and flying off into the scenery.

“To be honest with you, there was a big uncertainty about whether it was strong enough, so the attachment to the rear wing was quite strong,” he said.

“I used a pretty large heavy duty suction mount, along with a lot of silver tape around it. I wanted to ensure that no air came in under the suction cup.

“I hadn't been able to test the setup beforehand above 100 km/h though. I had done one test with it, where I ran it out of a Bentley Continental on some roads here in France, going over a few bumps. It held on firmly then!”

The other challenge was the roaring Ferrari engine – which was so loud that it overloaded the microphones on the Insta360. A bespoke separate microphone had to be placed near the exhausts.

Brito had only one opportunity to pull the video shoot off, with Monaco organisers having arranged some special track time for demonstration laps involving Alesi and Rene Arnoux in their two Ferraris to capture a number of different angles.

“I didn't know if the mounts would definitely hold, and another complication came up when the practice session before our run was delayed – so the cameras were running for an unplanned extra 20 minutes,” he revealed.

“Then, it was also the first laps for the drivers that weekend. So if they made a mistake then there was a high chance the cameras would have been smashed into the wall.”

In the end, the run passed without hitch. The rear wing camera stayed intact (he had checked it was still there after Alesi’s first flying lap past the pits), and when Alesi's Ferrari returned, the footage was every bit as good as he had hoped.

“I was surprised at how well everything looked,” said Brito. “The stabilisation was great, because there was a lot of vibration from the car. And I was lucky with the angle of the wing too because it hides the suction mount perfectly. You can’t see it.

“Once the car was back, I immediately showed the footage to Jean and Rene and they were blown away for 15 seconds – before they got into F1 driver mode and started analysing the car balance and their performance!”

Perhaps the biggest surprise for Brito was the reception the footage got from fans, with the video generating huge traction on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

“I knew it would make some noise because it hasn’t really been seen before on an F1 car, but I was definitely surprised by how positive the reaction was.”

The success of the Alesi video has prompted obvious talk about it being something that F1 itself could look at.

However, the technical setup of a physical camera and a mounting stick means that delivering such an angle on a current grand prix car in live action remains a dream for now.

However, what the Alesi Monaco footage has highlighted is that when the technology does allow, there remain camera angles for racing cars that are not in regular use and haven’t been fully exploited yet.

Brito added: “Obviously, you can't put a big stick and a camera on the back of an F1 car in a race. But if in 20 years’ time, if there is a magic technology that allows us to show this angle, then it would definitely be of interest.

“You can see a lot more of the car, and you get a greater sense of speed than with more traditional shots.”

The views on the Alesi video appear to show that F1 fans would indeed love it.

Jean Alesi had arrived

jean alesi yacht

Jean Alesi, born 11 June 1964 in Avignon, France, became Ken Tyrrell’s lead driver in 1990 for what would be his first full year in Grand Prix racing – prior to the start of the season, Alesi only had 8 race starts in F1, all with Team Tyrrell and was still considered as a rookie.

At the first event, the US Grand Prix at Phoenix, he sensationally led for 25 laps in front of Ayrton Senna with a car powered by a customer Ford V8, considered vastly inferior to the powerful  V10 Honda in Senna’s McLaren, and also re-passing Senna after the Brazilian had first overtaken for the lead.

Second place in the Monaco Grand Prix followed (picture below, on the podium with Senna and Berger), and by mid-season top teams were clamouring for his services in 1991. A confused situation followed, with Tyrrell, Williams and Ferrari all claiming to have signed the French driver.

Alesi initially signed a contract with Williams for the 1991 season. However, due to Williams delaying the announcement of his signature, Jean grew tired of the situation and opted to sign for Ferrari. The Scuderia was later forced to pay 4 million dollars compensation to the British team.

Alesi and Prost: The French dream that turned sour

There is a very popular programme on Sky television that has amassed a global audience over the past six years or so. 'The Deadliest Catch' follows the life and times of fishermen trailing the harsh waters of the Bearing Sea for the valuable King Crab off the Alaskan coast. Venturing out into open waters through some of the roughest conditions imaginable, these men battle for their lives in deceptively small boats, working with minimal sleep and in freezing temperatures. It is widely-perceived as one of the toughest jobs in the world. There is, however, a certain Frenchman who might take issue with that.

As one of the most successful F1 drivers of all time, Alain Prost's foray into team ownership in 1997 was, not to put too fine a point on it, disastrous. Like one of those fishing vessels sailing the vicious Bearing Sea, Prost Grand Prix always appeared to be navigating the harshest conditions the sport could throw at it.

It was a difficult time for the four-time world champion as he continually struggled to generate interest in the proposal of having a national team. Since Jack Brabham first entered a car under his own name in 1959, many drivers have turned their hand to team ownership - usually once their helmet has started gathering dust on the shelf. Whilst some have enjoyed success of varying levels, Brabham still remains the only man to claim a world title both as a driver and team owner.

The difference between the two is stark and can break a driver's resolve, not to mention the bank. Just ask Prost, John Surtees, Jackie Oliver et al . But does it change the retired driver himself?

Jean Alesi is suitably qualified to answer this question having driven alongside Prost in 1991 and having driven for Prost from 2000 to 2001.

Bursting onto the F1 scene at his home grand prix halfway through 1989, Alesi quickly captured the interest of the paddock's leading teams and towards the middle of the following year, was hot property. Signing a contract-of-intent with Williams, it seemed inevitable he would depart Tyrrell for Sir Frank's team. That was until Silverstone that year, when Nigel Mansell declared he would be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season and heading off into retirement to practice his golf swing.

Ferrari soon set about seducing the impressionable Alesi and, lured by the sheer prestige that comes with seeing the Prancing Horse emblem on a driver's overalls and steering wheel, the young Frenchman signed a two-year deal immediately. There then developed a minor tug-of-war between Ferrari and Williams, who were convinced they had signed a kosher deal with the young hotshoe. They hadn't.

"When I first came into the sport, I of course knew Alain and he had already had much success and was very helpful in small ways to me in my first two years with Ken Tyrrell," Alesi confirms. "Then, when I went to Ferrari, many said I must be crazy and that Ferrari would destroy my career - but Alain was very helpful to me, as it was scary for me at the beginning and I wasn't experienced in driving for a big team."

After a 1990 season that saw Prost claim five wins on his way to battling for the championship with arch-rival Ayrton Senna, much was expected for '91 - but what a disaster it proved to be.

Controversial Ferrari team manager Cesare Fiorio was removed from office, the 642/2 chassis that started the year was massively out-dated, its replacement 643 wasn't any better and the V12 engine produced as much horsepower as a sloth in motion.

"We should have had a great car that year," sighs Alesi. "There was so much we could have achieved, but the management at Ferrari was all over the place once Fiorio went and some of the time it felt like it was me and Alain against the rest of the team. There was no direction, and Alain got more-and-more frustrated with what was happening and then they fired him, which was the worst thing that could have happened."

Prost's sacking on the eve of the season-ending Australian Grand Prix served to underline the self-destruction Ferrari was intent on creating, and the whole episode proved tough for Alesi to handle. He is adamant, though, that his compatriot was fired simply for being himself and for speaking the truth.

"Alain was a great team-mate and we had a great year driving together in 1991," he reminisces. "He helped me with so much - especially with the demands being a Ferrari driver places on you. Despite all that he went through, it never changed him as a person, just the way he conducted himself around those he was unsure of."

Prost retired at the end of his title-winning 1993 season with Williams and worked over the next few years in an ambassadorial role for Renault and McLaren. Yet the lure of team ownership became too much, and in 1997 he realised a dream first born in 1989 and bought Ligier from Flavio Briatore.

Over the next few years, the team flattered to deceive on a continual basis, topping the timesheets during winter testing, then - 1997 aside - finding themselves running in the midfield at best during the season proper. Alesi - who was forced out of Ferrari for '96 following the signing of Michael Schumacher - moved to Benetton and then Sauber before being offered the chance of driving for his former team-mate Prost.

"I did have a few options open to me at the time," the 46-year-old confirms, "but the package presented to me by Alain was impressive. He wanted a French national team with a French driver, French engine manufacturer and French owner. It all sounded great, then I drove the car and realised we were in trouble. It never changed to be honest, and for sure, it was very frustrating for all of us, not just Alain."

Following Alesi's well-documented defection from the team to Eddie Jordan's outfit in the middle of the 2001 campaign, the countrymen fell out as Prost felt his driver had reneged on a gentlemen's agreement not to publicly criticise one another. Time, however, healed the rift and today, the two are good friends.

Prost Grand Prix folded in 2002 with debts in the tens of millions and, while the episode was a disaster for the proprietor and for French motor racing in particular, Alesi is sure the Alain Prost he drove with in '91 is no different from the man he drove for eleven years later.

"Alain was a fantastic champion driver, but when he became a team owner, everything changed," 'Jeannot' concludes. "He found the driving far more enjoyable than team ownership - as I think most retired drivers have done - but he gave it his best shot. As a driver you always want to win and I felt that driving for Alain would prove to be successful but I was wrong, and so was he."

Description

The first Scuderia Ferrari F1 car driven by the most successful F1 World Champion, Michael Schumacher Driven by Michael Schumacher at Fiorano and Estoril Podium finisher at the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix with Jean Alesi 412 T2 – Ferraris last V12-powered Grand Prix car Ferrari Classiche Certified - fully matching numbers Freshly overhauled by Ferrari S.p.A in 2019

1995 – A turning point for Formula 1

The 1995 Formula One season saw Michael Schumacher claim a second World Championship whilst driving for Benetton. Fierce battles with Scuderia Ferrari throughout the 1995 season convinced Schumacher that for the 1996 season he should wear rosso and take home a cheque for $60,000,000 over two seasons! Over a stunning eleven-year career as the number one driver for the Scuderia, Schumacher built a dream team of engineers and technicians, firmly restoring Ferrari as the team to beat in Formula 1. In eleven seasons, Ferrari scored six consecutive Manufacturers World Championships, and Michael Schumacher a record-breaking five World Drivers Championships!

Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo was building the Ferrari brand well in the marketplace in the early 1990’s, but he wanted to have a Formula One Championship-winning team. He recruited top F1 car designer, John Barnard, in August 1992, then hired Jean Todt to be Sporting Director in July 1993 before luring top engine men to the Scuderia, including former Honda designer Osamo Goto and Minardi chassis designer, Gustav Brunner. McLaren’s top race engineer, Giorgio Ascaelli and Benetton’s aerodynamicist Willem Toet soon followed, slowly creating a team and car capable of competing for the Formula One World Championship.

Ferrari entered the 1995 Formula 1 season with the carbon-fibre 412 T2, designed by F1 chassis gurus, John Barnard and Gustav Brunner, and powered by the all-new and final V12 Ferrari F1 engine, the 3.0-litre, Tipo 044. The V12 engine was positioned further forward thanks to a smaller 140-litre fuel cell under new regulations and mounted to a transverse six-speed semi-automatic Ferrari gearbox.

Time would show that this was the final Formula One car to be powered with a V12 engine and would the last V12 Formula 1 car to win a Grand Prix, at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix with Jean Alesi driving.

The first Scuderia Ferrari F1 driven by Michael Schumacher

The Ferrari 412 T2 offered here, chassis 157 is the first Scuderia Ferrari Formula One car driven by the most successful Formula One driver, Michael Schumacher. Before Schumacher slid behind the wheel of 157, the car was used by Scuderia Ferrari in the 1995 Formula 1 World Championship. Chassis 157 is the second 412 T2 built by the Maranello team and was used at the season-opening Brazilian Grand Prix, held at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, Interlagos.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Jean Alesi was assigned chassis 157, wearing the famed number 27 for Scuderia Ferrari. In practise, Alesi qualified sixth. Having worked his way up to fourth overall in the race, Alesi and 157 crossed the line in Sao Paolo to finish fifth overall after seventy laps. After round one, Ferrari led the Constructors Championship ahead of the McLaren Mercedes team.

The second round of the 1995 Formula One World Championship was the Gran Premio de Argentina, held over seventy-two laps of the Buenos Aires circuit. Alesi was assigned chassis 157 as his race car. After qualifying sixth on the grid again, Alesi entered the first corner on the inside of the sister Ferrari, braked late and ended up spinning the car with several other cars spinning to avoid contact with the stricken Ferrari. Unfortunately for Alesi, he had stalled the car so had to return to the pits and use his T-car.

In 1995, Italy hosted two Grand Prix, one at Imola in April, and one at Monza in September. Chassis 157 was again driven by Alesi at the 1995 Gran Premio di San Marino, held at the famed Imola circuit. Ferraris home race is always special, and this was no exception. Alesi and Berger proved the car to suit the Imola circuit, qualifying fifth and second. Race day saw Alesi drive one of the best races of his life. Thanks to a three-stop strategy and steadily climbing the order. Alesi passed Gerhard Berger and David Coulthard to finish second at the most important Grand Prix for Ferrari, who importantly retained the lead of the Constructors Championship.

Michael Schumacher’s Scuderia Ferrari debut

As the season passed, Schumacher asserted his authority in the Benetton, and claimed a back-to-back second Wold Championship, as well as signing for Scuderia Ferrari for the 1996 and 1997 season. In November, Schumacher was released from his Benetton obligations and quickly arrived at Ferrari’s home in Maranello for a test in the 1995 Ferrari 412 T2 at the team’s private test track, Fiorano.

The very first Scuderia Ferrari F1 car driven by Michael Schumacher was this, chassis 157, at the private Ferrari test track, Fiorano, on November 16th 1995. Wearing a white race suit and his iconic helmet, Schumacher had his first taste of the 412 T2 at a damp and cold Fiorano. Ferrari testing sheets, which accompany this Ferrari Classiche Certified 412 T2, confirm that chassis 157 was driven by Michael Schumacher over seventeen laps at Fiorano. This test was huge news for both Italy, and Formula One, with more than 2,000 people cramming up against the fences to watch the 26-year old German drive a Ferrari Formula One car for the first time. Magazines including Autosprint in Italy, and Autosport in England covered the days testing activities.

Michael Schumacher and this Ferrari 412 T2 test at Estoril

Five days later, Scuderia Ferrari and Michael Schumacher travelled to Estoril in Portugal to test chassis 157 once again. On the 21st November, Schumacher covered twenty-eight laps of the Portuguese circuit, and set a best lap time of 1m 21.20, an impressive 0.7s faster than the best Ferrari (Gerhard Berger) had managed in qualifying for Septembers Portuguese Grand Prix! As with the test at Fiorano, these laps are documented with copies of the original Ferrari test sheets accompanying chassis 157.

Michael Schumacher and Ferrari testing was a high-profile event with many of the world’s leading motorsport magazines featuring Schumacher testing chassis 157 under the Portuguese sun.

Post-Scuderia Ferrari and Schumacher

Having joined Scuderia Ferrari, Schumacher set about building the ‘Dream Team’ as they would become known and would claim Ferraris first of six-consecutive Constructors World Championships in 1999. During this era of Scuderia domination, Schumacher also claimed five consecutive World Drivers Championships and seventy-two Grand Prix victories.

After its life in the spotlight, this Ferrari 412 T2 was bought by German collector, Peter Fandel who acquired the car directly, dealing with Jean Todt, Scuderia Ferrari Team Manager. In late 2000, this car was bought by enthusiastic and accomplished racer, Klaas Zwart. The car was raced at several events and demonstrated at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix before being bought by its current owner in 2013.

Under its current ownership, this ex-Schumacher Scuderia Ferrari 412 T2 had its engine overhauled in 2014 and has covered less than 100 kilometres since. In 2018, the car returned to Maranello where it was tested at Fiorano prior to Ferrari stripping and rebuilding it. The works included a full chassis service and repainting in the fabulous Rosso Scuderia, along with a brake system overhaul and gearbox service.

In February 2019, with Ferrari having completed the rebuild, this 412 T2 was inspected and Certified by Ferrari Classiche, confirming it to retain its original chassis, engine and gearbox.

At the time of print, Michael Schumacher is the most successful Formula One driver in history, currently holding no fewer than twenty-five records, seven Championship titles and ninety-one Grand Prix victories.

Scuderia Ferrari S.p.A is the most successful Formula One Constructor in history, currently holding thirteen records, sixteen Constructors’ Championships and two hundred and thirty-eight Grand Prix victories.

This Ferrari 412 T2, chassis 157, is the first Scuderia Ferrari Formula One car driven by legend, Michael Schumacher. Even more fitting is that his first taste of the Italian machinery came at Ferrari’s private test track in its hometown of Maranello, Circuito di Fiorano. Imagine the excitement he experienced as he pressed his right foot to the floor for the first time in a Ferrari F1 car, well, this is your opportunity to experience that same sensation. This track-ready, Ferrari Classiche Certified, ex-Michael Schumacher and podium-finishing Scuderia Ferrari 412 T2 can be yours!

The Formula 1 season returns at the end of August with the Belgian Grand Prix, after what has been a fascinating campaign so far

The Formula 1 season returns at the end of August with the Belgian Grand Prix, after what has been a fascinating campaign so far .

The standings are currently looking very much in favour of Max Verstappen and Red Bull but, with nine races still left to go, anything can still happen.

To take a look back at the 2022 campaign up to this point, we caught up with ex-F1 driver Jean Alesi to get his thoughts on some of the biggest storylines...

Jean Alesi on Ferrari

“It’s not such a bad season for them.

“Because the last few years they had a very bad car and a bad season.

“They hardly got on the podium, then last year, they recovered a bit. And now with these new regulations they came out with a rocket car [which is] very competitive everywhere.

“But, of course, we are in the middle of the season, and now we can make the kind of judgement on what’s happened. And they have had the moments where they made the wrong decision on the wrong moment. And you see how much a small mistake can be a big effect on the bad side.

“What I have to say is it’s more important to have a fast car, and then to fine tune the team, because this team [has gone] a long time without winning the championship and they are building a group.

“And they are fighting with a group like Mercedes, or, obviously, Red Bull, who in the last 12 years, they have won everything and so this fine tuning to be competitive, not only with the car, but also on the racetrack, will take time.

“Probably since Ferrari [began] existing, the attention is always massive and the fans are also very critical. I have a column in Italy for the newspaper Corriere della Sera and last time after Hungary, I made the column only for the fans. I was saying ‘please, it’s not like the World Cup, every four years, and you miss a penalty, and it’s the end of the world, it’s not like that.’

“Racing is different. And of course Ferrari are prepared to have a lot of criticism, and they know how to deal with it. But it’s not nice. I believe so much in [Mattia] Binotto and in the young team because when you have to race against engineers like Adrian Newey, he is a superstar. As an engineer he has always made winning cars and to be honest, Ferrari looks faster so that is a big achievement. The criticism from the press or from the fan is normal because Ferrari is Ferrari.”

Jean Alesi on the title fight & Red Bull

“Well, there’s no question about the numbers. They have a big lead. That gives confidence to a driver with already massive confidence. He has a strong team, they make zero mistakes. So for sure we can say they are in a good position. But it’s motorsport – everything can go wrong. But for sure if I have to bet it’s Max and Red Bull.

“This year I’ve been very impressed with Sergio because to have a teammate like Max Verstappen I’m sure it’s not easy. All the new circuits we have, like Miami, you see the first lap times and Max is nearly always faster than his teammates and for a driver when your teammate, with the same car, is able to make this kind of input it’s very difficult to swallow.

“But when you have the experience of Checo, he’s a hard fighter and worker so he is doing a very good job. So for sure there’s not a number one driver and a number two driver in the team, but they have very good discipline, and they are not arguing when there is a message for one driver or the other one, they just do it.”

Jean Alesi on Mercedes ' season

“It’s easy for me to say but everybody was shocked by [their start.]

“When they presented the car in Bahrain everybody said ‘oh my God, they have made something very special and they’re going to be untouchable.’

“But lap after lap they found out the car was nowhere. And to see Lewis Hamilton driving a car like that was sometimes embarrassing because Lewis is a seven-time world champion.

“But to see his capacity to still improve the car, that was impressive. In Hungary, it was fantastic to see George on pole position and Lewis fighting towards the front.

“By experience when a car is born with problems, you’re not able to fix it.

“You can make a compromise but a compromise in Formula 1 doesn’t work, you know. So I don’t really believe they are able to be a winning team winning Grands Prix before the end of the championship under normal circumstances.”

Jean Alesi on the Oscar Piastri/ Daniel Ricciardo saga

“It’s fantastic to see a young driver to be in the middle of two teams that want him.

“Oscar made an impressive debut in motorsport – he won his first season in Formula 3 and in Formula 2.

“This season he isn’t racing. And that, for me, is more shocking than what is happening now. I think, with the new format of Formula 1 with the new spirit of Formula 1, all the young drivers, the fast ones, they will have a way to find a drive and that for me is best.”

“Daniel is one of the biggest characters in Formula 1.

“I don’t know one person when I meet F1 fans who is not talking about him because he is loved by everybody.

“For sure, Lando [Norris] is a new star for Formula 1 and with Daniel, sometimes you are struggling with a car, with new regulations, but there’s no doubt he will find a good place to end again back on the top.

“I like Daniel so much and I like also this movement of the drivers in F1. That’s great and is what we want. We want to see a Ronaldo leaving Juventus and going to Manchester United situation.”

READ MORE: Jean Alesi backs Daniel Ricciardo to win in F1 again as he reflects on McLaren/Piastri saga

Jean Alesi on Fernando Alonso

“I’ll tell you a story.

“I was in Hockenheim and at the time we had the long circuit, it was not the Hockenheim we have now. We had these long straights going into the forest so, of course, we had the stadium section with all the public and then for a long time you were in the forest with no public.

“So he was next to me [on the drivers’ parade] and suddenly at the end of the forest was one fan with a sign saying ‘Happy Birthday Fernando.’ And so I turned to him and said ‘Fernando, is it your birthday?’ And I ask him how old he is and he says ’20-years-old!’ So that is my memory of him and to see the career he has had, it’s just amazing. What a fighter, I mean this guy when you see drivers like him, you’re happy to pay the ticket.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY - JULY 29: Fernando Alonso of Spain driving the (14) Alpine F1 A522 Renault on track during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at Hungaroring on July 29, 2022 in Budapest, Hungary. (Photo by Dan Mullan/Getty Images)

“I understand there is a new investor in Aston Martin and they are very ambitious. The ambition is very high. So I hope he has made a good move this time because sometimes he has made some mistakes in his life. But to finish a career with a good move would be a very good story for all of us.

“Absolutely [he can win titles.] We cannot talk about talent because we know he has it. What we can say is can he handle physically the whole season fighting the young drivers? I have to say yes, the cars are very demanding in terms of G-force but Fernando has never stopped [driving]. When he was not in Formula 1 he was running sports cars and he is always in a car so I’m sure he can [compete.] But to win a world championship for a team like Aston now, I don’t believe it will happen next year [at least.]”

READ MORE: Jean Alesi backs Fernando Alonso to succeed at Aston Martin if the car is good enough

Jean Alesi on Sebastian Vettel

“He did it at a good time. He is a four-time world champion, he is very well respected in F1 by all the drivers and that means a lot you know.

“But he’s quite young, so probably we will see him back in a racing car quite soon, I believe.”

READ MORE: Jean Alesi tips Sebastian Vettel for racing return after F1 exit

Jean Alesi on Valtteri Bottas

“You know, it was quite funny sometimes at the beginning of the year to see Lewis [Hamilton] behind him because I cannot imagine Lewis expected to read Alfa Romeo on the rear wing of the car in front.

“But so far he’s done a superb job because it’s not a top team and he’s qualified the car many times in a good position and at the end brought to the team good points.”

READ MORE: Valtteri Bottas doing 'superb' job at Alfa Romeo

“For many reasons when I speak about him, it’s like if I speak about my son.

“He has not just the name, he won [the title] in European F3 and F2.

“Last year, the car was not competitive. This year he has a competitive car and a very strong teammate. So at the beginning of the championship, it was difficult for him to be in the correct window, and he had some impressive shunts.

“And Formula 1 is tough when you are making mistakes like that, especially now with the budget cap. The teams are struggling when the shunts are too big, but now he has good speed, he is [getting] in the points. So I’m sure he has all the capacity and the talent to continue in Formula 1. The worst moments of being in Formula 1 are behind him now.”

Alesi ‘emotional’ over son’s ferrari test, clarifies academy exit, ferrari formula 1 hero jean alesi has described his emotions as he watched son giuliano get his first taste of an f1 car at the fiorano test track on monday morning..

Alesi Snr first tested a Ferrari 641 in November 1990, before an action-packed, five-year F1 career with the Scuderia. Son Giuliano, who has been racing in FIA Formula 2 for the past two seasons, got his first F1 run in a 2018-spec SF71H – sporting the same number 28 that his dad used in his inaugural season at Ferrari in 1991.

“It came as a surprise to me, I cannot believe he looked into the details like that,” said Alesi of his son’s decision to run with the number 28 on the car. “I believe I first tested in November 1990, the 15th my fan club tells me, so it is amazing to think that he drove the car with my number 30 years later.

“It was great to see him in a Ferrari – a lot of emotions for me! – but also a feeling of responsibility of not making a mistake as he was the first one to go out and everything was very cold, and others were to drive the car.

“It was not easy for him, but everything went fantastically well, and I felt good for him.”

Alesi clarified that although Giuliano has officially left the Ferrari Driver Academy, which he joined in 2016 and won four races in GP3, that it’s not necessarily the end of his story with the Italian marque.

“It’s the end for him with the Academy, yes, but not with Ferrari – it is still our family,” he said. “That has been very clear from Ferrari.”

After two difficult seasons in FIA Formula 2, Giuliano will leave Europe to race in Japan this year, where his father believes there’s a more level playing field for drivers to show their talent and progress on merit.

“If you look in our part of the world in Europe, nothing is a meritocracy,” said Alesi Snr. “You just need to pay and pay and pay.

“I think that’s crazy, it’s the only sport in the world where you have to pay to make your show. I think in Japan it seems much more fair.”

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
