Thunderbird 26?

  • Add to quote

My wife has an eye on a Plywood Thunderbird 26, why, I don't know, but it looks super clean and comes with a tandem axle trailer that is worth the asking price of the boat. I know nothing about this boat except what little info I have found online. Stats suggest possibly a good boat to weather, which is all that matters on Eastern Lake Ontario. I assume insurance will be a pain, but aside from that. Good boat?

paulk

They raced them in SFO Bay and had quite a following. Don't know how active the fleet is now. It would seem that they'd need a good breeze to get going, but that they can handle it.

Fun little boats. I crewed on a couple some years ago. They can take a lot of wind and are surprisingly stiff to weather - they kind of lock in on a heel angle. Lots of them here in Seattle - the fleet might have answers to your questions: Thunderbird Fleet 2 - Seattle

I raced on one years ago. It was a surprisingly quick boat, although quite uncomfortable to sail hard. The original T-birds were built out of plywood, but then people started building them out of fiberglass. I would be VERY careful about buying one of the old wood models. I would be concerned about the potential for rot anywhere and everywhere on the boat. Sent from my SM-G981W using Tapatalk

I raced on a plywood version in Savanah back in the late 1970's. I was quite impressed with the boat. The boat pointed well and was well mannered. While not as strong downwind as the masthead rigs of the day with their huge spinnakers, the boat was really impressive on a reach. I found the boat easy to sail and pretty forgiving compared the other boats that I was on back then. These boats had a larger sail area and a higher ballast ratio than most other boats of this era, which contributed to making them pretty good across a broad range of conditions. The fractional rig made sail handling much easier. They had an extremely modern keel and rudder design for that era and were quite maneuverable. When we think of a particular make and model of fiberglass boat, there is a tendency to expect a pretty consistent build-quality throughout a production run. But build quality on boats like the plywood Thunderbirds varied extremely widely. While many of the plywood Thunderbirds were professionally built, there were also knock down kit versions, and T-birds that were built from scratch solely off the plans as well. The boat that I raced was built with Bruynzeel mahogany plywood on cypress framing. She was home-built as an upscale, customized version of one of the kits. In Savannah around that same time, there was also a fir-plywood version that was home built off of the drawings Both of these boats had essentially the same simple but very workable interior layout, I was very interested in these two boats. At the time, I was designing a 26 foot MORC boat with plywood topsides and bottoms and with a cold molded radiused chine. I had already owned a wooden Folkboat and liked wood construction, I liked boats that size (eventually owning four different 25-26 footers), and had become attracted to fractional rigs after the Folkboat. I spent a lot of time studying the design and details of those two boats- crawling through them and making sketches and taking measurements. There had been a small one-design fleet of them in Brunswick, GA. or Charleston, SC that had disbursed by the time I was down there, and these two were built as part of that fleet probably within a year of each other. Even between these two boats, which were built as as one design class conforming, and which were built almost at the same time as each other, there were some mix of minor and pretty big differences. For example, there was a different number of longitudinal stringers between the two (the mahogany boat had fewer). One had the pop-top and the other didn't. One was resorcinol glued and ring nail fastened. The other used some other adhesive and was screwed. (I think he may have used Lifecaulk as an adhesive, but its a long time ago.) One had two portlights and the other had one big portlight. There were also minor differences in the deck plan. The kit boat had much lower coamings with a wider cap that you could comfortably sit on. The home-built boat simply had plank coamings with a metal cap that got painfully hot in the Georgia sun. The home-built had been hit at some point and the owner talked about how he replaced the damaged panel and stringer. It didn't sound too onerous or complicated. While I saw the repair, I don't recall how it was done, except that it involved WEST System epoxy and scarfing rather than adding permanent butt blocking. Other than to suggest that you need to carefully check the planking and framing inside and out, I would think that a Thunderbird would be a nice boat to own and one that should be pretty cheap to buy and maintain. Jeff

The boat was unbeatable in our beer can fleet when the "old guy" was on the helm. When his (older) kids took it out, not so much. So, I suppose it can sail well if you have the skills and touch!

The pictures look good at least. It would seem like a boat big enough to go places and tough enough to get you back as well. New cushions might make her "yours" and give her a more up-to-date appearance. Not for ramp launching, this one.

Found this video on YouTube. The boat looks to be very well mannered surfing in some rough stuff.

Assuming those are recent photos, that boat sure appears to be in nice shape. There are a few things that I wanted to mention. -An oddity of the T-birds is that they typically don't have stanchions and lifelines. -There are two rudder designs for the T-bird: The original and the later 'spade' rudder. The spade rudder is much preferred. The phot looks like an original. -Some T-birds still have wooden masts. I can't tell what that is from the photos. -The design had a provision for an outboard motor well. That was intended for a small, light, two stroke outboard. The boat I raced had a small outboard in a bracket. The other had a Seagull two-stroke in the well. They removed it, stowed it in the cabin, and had doors that closed the opening when they raced. Then again, watching that video, there aren't many 25 footers that will tolerate a person standing on the bow in seas like that! Jeff

The ad mentions a motor well. Comes with a 9.9 2 stroke Johnson. I would replace the Johnson with my Torqeedo. The Johnson would cover about half the asking price I suspect. (The Torqeedo would cover all of it, selling the Bay Hen would buy me 2). Mast is aluminum. I will find out about the rudder. I think interior pics are recent, resolution and image quality suggest a fairly new cell phone, but the trailer pic shows a 4x4 chevy ASTRO mini van towing it, and lighting is a bit off, so I doubt it's recent.

The first two larger sailboats I sailed on were the King's Cruiser (I believe that was the name) and a T-bird. I was foredeck crew on the T-bird and we took first place 5 out of 7 seasons. The T-bird is an amazingly exciting boat to race, capable of taking on the very worst weather San Francisco Bay could throw at her. For the Bay, we did have 500# of extra weight because of the wind strength that was common there, since races were not cancelled for too much wind in those days. Delayed for fog, since one couldn't find the starting line anyway, in that pea soup. They were all plywood, w/no fiberglass, so they were very light. With their flat forefront areas due to the hard chine design, they plane easily down hill, enough so that their rudder can come out of the water (with a chute up), but thankfully you'll have your boom preventer and down haul very tight, which will act as a great oar to keep the boat from rounding up. I would recommend the T-bird as being so much fun, with such great sailing characteristics, for the price.

Ya, I spoke to my agent and that's what it means. Boats under 26 ft are covered. And I spoke to another company that gave me a reasonable quote fir stand alone insurance, no survey required, just 10 "clear pictures from different angles". For some reason I thought a 45 year old wood boat would be hard to insure, but neither company seemed to care what it was made out of. But now my wife is saying let's hold off and get something bigger next spring 30-35 ft. That's fine by me.

I owned one for a few years. It was the fiberglass hull. Absolutely loved that boat. There is a big fleet of them at Port Townsend. They are a bit awkward to handle under power with the engine stowed as it is but that’s a very minor complaint for a sailboat. Performance under sail was superb as others have indicated. I doubt you plan to leave it in the water and unattended over the winter, but if you do, check the bilge to see if it’s deep enough for a bilge pump. Mine was very shallow and inadequate for a common bilge pump. I used a shop vac on a timer to keep it dry but that wouldn’t have prevented a sinking obviously. Fortunately I got away without trouble but it made me nervous. I bought mine without a professional survey and had no trouble insuring it.

Had one about 30+ years ago. Glass over ply, wood mast. Paid $80 for it, abandoned at a Rochester NY marina, launched, sailed to Oswego and cut the mast and made tabernacle to raise and lower to travel the NYS canal. I could raise the rig in 15-30 minutes alone. Sailed it a few years before enlisting. Sold it for $300, the guy wanted to refit, he ended up chainsawing it and using the mast as a flagpole in his farm. It was a fun boat to Sail.

Thunderbird: A Legend Lives On

Thunderbird

06302004_006.jpg.

I have always considered myself an ocean person — you know, choosing from the possibilities of ocean, desert, mountain or plain — though “why would anyone want to choose?” was what I wondered as I drove down the mountainside and got my first glimpse of Lake Tahoe. The soaring peaks were capped in white; the evergreen-covered slopes were dusted with snow; even the windshield wipers of my rented Ford Focus swung furiously as they battled an early November snow squall — and in the middle of it all: Lake Tahoe — vast and empty, buffeted by white-capped chop.

From a distance, it’s easy to see how much of this beautiful region has remained undeveloped and wild. And one man who helped make it so was George Whittell Jr., who purchased about 100,000 acres and 27 miles of shoreline on the Nevada side of the lake. The son of a family with gold-rush money on both sides, Whittell was born into a life of wealth and privilege. From an early age, though, he went his own way — and with gusto. He joined the circus and became a lion tamer. He married two chorus girls in succession before wife number three, a well-bred French woman named Elia who looked the other way as Whittell carried on with his playboy lifestyle.

“Whittell was always said to love the four Gs,” said Bill Watson, manager and curator of Thunderbird and Thunderbird Lodge, as he led me through the 600-foot underground tunnel connecting Whittell’s beautiful lakeside estate to the boathouse. “Girls. Gambling. Giraffes. And Gadgets.

After a brief pause off the tunnel in a side room with a fireplace, known as “the opium den,” we emerged in the massive boathouse. And there she was, the legendary Thunderbird , stern to the door, her twin supercharged Allison V-12 aircraft engines removed for servicing. In the soft sunlight that filtered through the high windows of the boathouse, the engines gleamed with an almost sculptural beauty. Capable of putting out 3,000 horsepower, they are detuned to generate about 1,100 horsepower apiece.

I walked across an aluminum gangplank and through the stripped-down boat, picking my way across areas of open sole and plastic-dropcloth-covered seating. It wasn’t Thunderbird’s most glamorous moment, but like all great beauties, she didn’t need primping to dazzle.

First mate Mark Taylor was crouched low in the stern and pointed to his next project: sandwiching the stringers with aluminum to better support the engine mounts. It’s a far cry from his summertime gig aboard Thunderbird . “Coming into the boathouse is like flying a boat,” he grinned. “ Thunderbird idles at nine knots — she just doesn’t know how to go slow.”

John L. Hacker designed Thunderbird for Whittell, who requested a yacht that reflected his love of Duesenberg autos (which he collected) and DC-2 aircraft (which he also owned). Fashioned of double-planked mahogany and brushed stainless steel, Thunderbird was originally powered by twin 550-horsepower Kermath aircraft engines that pushed the boat to 60 knots.

Built by Huskins Boat Works in Bay City, Michigan, and delivered to Whittell in the summer of 1940, Thunderbird enjoyed only two seasons of Whittell’s active use before he became increasingly reclusive, restricting his movement to the tunnels around the lodge and spending most of his time with Bill, his pet lion. Over the next few decades, sightings of Thunderbird were so rare that they took on the air of fable.

When casino magnate Bill Harrah acquired Thunderbird in 1962, the Kermath engines had only 83 hours of use. Harrah removed them, converting the stern area to open the cockpit for carrying headlining passengers like Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. Harrah had twin Allisons positioned below the cockpit sole and added the stainless steel flying bridge that Thunderbird sports today. Though she is undeniably still stunning, the original lines had a streamlined, almost rocketlike quality that’s been lost to these more user-friendly improvements.

Thunderbird is now owned by Foundation 36, which is dedicated to preserving Nevada’s natural, cultural and historic treasures. Watson describes Foundation 36’s acquisition of Thunderbird as a many-pronged process that bordered on spookily preordained, culminating in Thunderbird’s previous owner, Joan Gibb, agreeing to take a much less lucrative offer to prevent the yacht from moving out of state. The original loan that secured Thunderbird for the foundation will be paid off by generous donors if a matching endowment to preserve her can be met (see “The Clock Is Ticking” below).

“We are blessed that Thunderbird is in the public trust,” points out Watson. Today, she spends much of her time educating local children in a maritime heritage program, and anyone can come to Thunderbird Lodge to see the boat. “We will lose her,” Watson sighs, “if we can’t meet this endowment.” There are constant offers (many from abroad) to buy her. Efforts are under way to put her on the National Register of Historic Places, but Thunderbird doesn’t need a plaque. She is a piece of living history and a uniquely American national treasure — a beautiful vestige of one eccentric man’s dreams, which live on in the stunning mountains and the deep, blue lake he chose as home.

The Clock is Clocking Help save Thunderbird .

Foundation 36 is actively seeking corporate sponsorships or contributions toward Thunderbird’s running expenses. Donations of airplane fuel, for instance, or replacement parts for her rare Allison engines, would be enormously helpful. If you or your company can help Thunderbird , please call or write:

A History, and Review of the 2020 Sailing Season

From the December 2020 issue of 48° North.

A successful season of racing on Port Townsend Bay has come to an end. At the center of the planning and implementation, as every year, was the Port Townsend Sailing Association (PTSA). And once again, the Thunderbirds were the big local fleet.

Many 48° North readers will be familiar with the venerable Thunderbird, but the boat’s rich Pacific Northwest history is nearly matched in intrigue by the recent coalescence that brought a fleet home to Port Townsend, and Port Townsend sailors to this fleet.

Ben Seaborn penned his design for the Thunderbird in response to a 1958 challenge by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association for a design that could be “both a racing and a cruising boat … sleep four … capable of being built by reasonably skilled amateur” and, crucially, “outperform other sailboats in its class.” And it did. By 1980, there were more than 1,000 Thunderbirds sailing. Perhaps more impressively, the class association received more than 25,000 requests for the building plans (which first cost $2, and are available today for $60).

thunderbird 26 sailboat interior

Thunderbirds immediately showed their speed, beating many larger and more expensive boats. Three sailing enthusiasts in Port Townsend — Jim Daubenberger, who owned a clothing store on Water Street, attorney Glenn Abraham, and physician Bill Scheyer — took notice. In 1963, they commissioned hulls 241 ( Zaca ), 242 ( Dorado ), and 243 ( Caveat ) from Bill Knottingham Marine in Tacoma.

“The boats were inexpensive,” says Jim’s son, Joe Daubenberger. “In 1963, the bill of sale for these Thunderbirds was $2,650, including sails and other options,” said Joe in a tribute to his father in the Port Townsend Leader . That’s a little less than what this author paid for a Thunderbird ( Falcon , #1177) two summers ago.

Putting that in perspective, median income in the greater Seattle Area in 1960 was $6,225, so the purchase of a new Thunderbird in 1960 set you back nearly one half year’s median income in Seattle. Even back then, a Thunderbird was not so inexpensive for most people. Today, median income in metropolitan Seattle is $102,500 (2019) and you can purchase a new J/80 (also 26 feet) for $55,000 — or a little more than one half of a year’s median income. The Thunderbird was the J/80 of 1960. Well, not quite as fast, but much better to cruise!

As the years went on and the region’s economy boomed, more sailors were able to afford bigger, faster boats. In Port Townsend, too, Jim Daubenberger, Bill Scheyer, and Glenn Abraham moved on to bigger boats and longer races. Zaca , Dorado , and Caveat were sold off and fell on hard times, neglected, down on Bainbridge Island, in Port Hadlock, and Port Ludlow. But you couldn’t keep the Thunderbird and Port Townsend sailors apart long.

In 2000, Scott Walker purchased an old woodie, Tzieu , which he lovingly restored to pristine condition. John Carey had C oco Solo and raced it avidly. In 2008 Joe Daubenberger attended the 50th anniversary party for the Thunderbird. The event also marked the launch of a beautiful new woodie, Thunderbaby (#1255), which turned out to be the last Thunderbird built. “We kept running into someone who said ‘I have your dad’s old T-bird,’” says Joe Daubenberger. The Daubenbergers found Zaca in Port Ludlow, and Dorado in disrepair and with a foul bottom. Both were brought to Port Townsend and restored. Caveat was at the Wooden Boat Center. The three original Port Townsend Thunderbirds had returned like prodigal sons.

Suddenly, there was the core for a one-design fleet in Port Townsend. Glenn Abraham’s daughter Anne and her husband, Doug Bolling, owned Raven which they painted shiny black. John Lynes purchased his first Thunderbird in 2008. The Bollings acquired the old family boat, Caveat , from the Wooden Boat Foundation in a trade, and they sold Raven to Stig Osterberg and Steve Scharf. Piper Dunlap acquired Blew Bird and later Magic Bus with fellow 505 sailors. Dale Dunning, the president of the International Thunderbird Association, brought his boat Water Torture to Port Townsend in 2013, and acquired Owl from the Victoria fleet in 2016.

Of such stuff a one-design fleet is made: energy, camaraderie, and an infatuation with these funky old boats that are fun to sail, truly inexpensive in this day and age, and still fast. Now, there are many others in Port Townsend. Steve Scharf has personally brought in three boats and has donated a motor yacht committee boat, which is staffed by a regular committee. The Port Townsend fleet was incorporated as International Thunderbird Fleet 33. It is vibrant. And growing.

In 2020, the year’s on-water sparring began informally in January, with several Thunderbirds and Bertram Levy’s Murrelet gathering on Saturdays and sailing up to the mooring buoys off Fort Worden, down to the green buoy off the naval facility on Indian Island, and across to the wooden tower off Rat Island — the old anchor point for an anti-submarine net that stretched across Port Townsend Bay during World War II.

Twenty-six boats — a happy gaggle of 505s, classic woodies new and old, plastic fantastics, and eight Thunderbirds — showed up to mark the leap year on February 29 for the Shipwright’s Regatta, under snow-capped peaks. Dorado , Raven , and Kuma San took top honors in the Thunderbird class.

thunderbird 26 sailboat interior

With the state in Coronavirus lockdown, six-to-eight Thunderbirds raced informally, with family units, single-handed, or double-handed on Saturdays from March through May. To keep things even, a decision was made not to use flying sails and to use the working jib as a headsail. This proved to be a popular solution and became the model for the formal PTSA racing during the balance of the year.

PTSA sponsored their Midsummer (June), Catspaw (July), and Dog Days (August) series, which consisted of Wednesday night windward/leeward courses and Friday night romps around the Bay starting and finishing at City Dock. The Wednesdays turned out to be a one-design event for the Thunderbirds. Fifteen Thunderbirds showed up in total, with 7-12 boats on the line each week. Corvo , Owl , and Dorado dominated the summer with Corvo winning the first two, and Owl and Dorado trading second and third. Dorado won the third series, with Raven second, and Owl third.

Eleven total boats turned out for the annual Ted Pike Regatta, held on August 22. This is a quintessential Port Townsend event. In normal years it starts on the beach below the Marine Science Center in Le Mans fashion. One crew member from each boat rows, paddles, or swims from the beach to their boat to be pulled up by eagerly waiting crews who may not hoist sail or begin to weigh anchor until the marooned sailor has rejoined the boat. The first turning mark is off the beach near the Point Wilson lighthouse, where the fleet surprised a family on their trawler enjoying lunch tied to a mooring buy. This year the start was from “at anchor,” but the finish still involved sending a swimmer to shore to drink a double shot of rum and ring a bell at the Northwest Maritime Center. Thunderbirds Corvo and Falcon were the top two finishers.

Owl won the single light air race of the Fall Thunderbird Regatta, followed by Raven and Magic Bus . The racing for this season concluded with the Saturday Nightcap series. Raven , Owl , and Corvo bested a field of 10 boats in the Thunderbird fleet.

Many of this year’s races have been documented on video by Dale Dunning. Check out his YouTube Channel at OP Sailing for coverage of the Thunderbird fleet.

The wind is full of promise for sailing on Port Townsend Bay next year. Classic wooden boats, fast modern racers, and funky still-fast old boats will keep the sailing in Port Townsend diverse and interesting.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Some THUNDERBIRDS have been built of molded FG with aluminum spars. A “cruising deck” design was introduced. Most have been built from plans now supplied by the class association. See the class web site for details.

World’s coolest boats: Why Thunderbird is the ultimate classic motor yacht

  • Top stories

Each month we pick out an iconic boat that can lay claim to the title of world’s coolest boat. This month, we take a closer look at the classic motor yacht Thunderbird…

Thunderbird is what happens when you combine an obsession with aircraft, the heady days of the 1930s and a LOT of money.

George Whittell was an eccentric San Francisco tycoon who, in the mid-20th century, owned about a third of the land in the Tahoe basin and 27 miles of the lake’s shoreline.

He built a beautiful lakeside home called Thunderbird Lodge; kept a pet lion called Bill and a pet elephant called Mango; owned a variety of aircraft including a DC-2, outfitted for his private use; six of the rarest Duesenberg motorcars; a 145ft superyacht and this legendary 55ft sportsyacht, Thunderbird .

Commissioned by Whittell specifically for Lake Tahoe to go with the estate he was building there, Thunderbird was designed by the famous naval architect John L. Hacker, built by Huskins Boat Works in Bay City, Michigan and delivered in the summer of 1940.

Whittell wanted the boat to resemble his DC-2 aircraft, which is why the hull is double-planked mahogany but the superstructure is brushed stainless steel.

Dunkirk Little Ship restoration: The amazing story of a boat that survived both World Wars

World’s coolest boats: fairey huntsman is the ultimate james bond boat.

And the aircraft links don’t end there, Thunderbird was originally powered by twin 550hp Kermath V12 aircraft engines that pushed the boat to 32 knots.

It was kept in a 100ft-long boathouse connected to the house via a 600ft long tunnel blasted out of solid granite.

Whittell used the boat on the lake frequently for the two years that followed but when the USA entered World War Two in January 1942, Whittell hid the boat in its boathouse, fearful of it, or its engines, being requisitioned for the war effort.

MBY285.col_coolboats.00858

The newly restored Thunderbird still lives in its original boathouse on Lake Tahoe

Age, ill health and an ever-more reclusive nature meant that the boat was little used after the war, Whittell eventually selling it to casino magnate William F. Harrah in 1962.

Harrah had it transported to his Automobile Collection restoration workshop in Reno where the original Kermath engines (which when removed had only 83 hours on them) were replaced with two V-12 Allison aircraft engines, each developing 1,100hp.

Harrah used it to entertain his casino high-rollers and show-headliners, such as Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli.

Today the boat is restored and back at Thunderbird Lake Tahoe, now run by a charity called Foundation 36. It offers private excursions a few times a year in return for charitable donations.

The best features of the Capri are flexibility, stability, livability and sail-ability. The stepped mast provides for flexibility to raise and lower the mast without a crane – yes it is trailerable. The wide beam provides for both stability and livability. The open interior layout easily provides comfort for four. For a 26 foot boat it has a very large cockpit. The interior is larger than one would expect as it is not divided into smaller spaces. Features: walk thru transom, roller furling, huge double berth midships, dinghy with outboard, auto-pilot, plotter, radar and a boatload of Catalina features. The 9′ 8″ beam means the interior volume is huge for a 26 sailboat. At our docks in Sidney and available to view by appointment.

Model 26 Swing Keel With Trailer

Length 26.0

Posted Over 1 Month

The MacGregor 26S MacGregor 26 Swing Keel Sailboat 1994 with Trailer in Excellent Condition ready to Sail! This is a 1994 MacGregor 26S Sailboat with trailer and 8 hp outboard motor in excellent condition. It accepts a 2 inch ball mount trailer hitch. The total trailer weight is about 2000 lbs, so pretty much any V-6 vehicle can tow this without any extra equipment. Any Minivan for example will work fine. It includes everything needed to sail. Three sails including a main, a roller furling Genoa and a drifter / spinnaker are included . This sailboat is wheel steered with binnacle mounted motor remote controls and instruments. Everything is in excellent condition and the trailer tires are brand new Goodyear Marathon trailer tires. It also has an extra motor mount for a trolling motor or small outboard secondary engine. This boat has many upgrades including wheel steering and a Rudder Craft Mac 26S HDPE High Performance Replacement Rudder as well as the stock rudder as a spare, a MMSD pump out porta toilet, a CDI roller furling Genoa and a main sail cover as well as life lines and bow and stern pulpits, a swim ladder, a solar panel and an Autohelm ST 30 Bidata to name a few. The 8 HP Tohatsu (Nissan) outboard model M8B also has electric start and an alternator. The MacGregor 26S, 1990 to 1995, replaced the dagger board with a swing centerboard (which kicks up in an accidental grounding) and made other smaller changes. Together, the 26D and 26S are often called the "classic" MacGregor 26, and sometimes the 26C. Owners of these earlier models tend to refer to them as "the real sailboats" prior to the changes coming with the MacGregor 26X. The V-berth can handle 2 people/kids and has storage underneath, the settee can accommodate another person and plenty more storage under there, in the cabin galley /kitchen area is a sink and a mirrored bulkhead with plenty of storage under the sink. Behind the ladder going into the cockpit is a queen sized, super comfortable bed which is also located right below the cockpit. This boat has a POP-UP roof over the galley area that rotates up and out of the way while boat is at anchor / berth which gives unlimited head room in the cabin. This vessel includes all tools and supplies needed for maintenance and use like a nice Windex for mast top mounting. a manual bilge pump, an anchor with rode, a new gallon of bottom paint, a new fuel tank with hose, a remote controlled stereo, cockpit cushions, a wind scoop etc. I am the third owner of this nice Mac and all paperwork including the Wisconsin Title and the original purchase contract when new are included as well as a IL trailer title from the previous owner. (Note, a few pictures are from the previous owner in IL and we do not have trailer titles in WI.) It is located in Door County, WI in the city of Egg Harbor, WI north of Green Bay at my summer cottage while I live in Milwaukee, WI. At the time it was the only sailboat that met my budgetary needs, had room enough for my family of three to cruise for up to a week at a time, and trailered well to let us explore waters from Maine to Key West. Yes, it's a light boat, but I had a lot of sailing experience and was cautious and never had trouble in winds to 30 knots - and I didn't try anything foolish like taking it offshore. Yes, the fiberglass was thin, but I avoided running into rocks. I took my 3-year-old out on solo daysails and have no regrets. I sold it to a family of four, their first boat, and heard from them a few years later that they'd thoroughly enjoyed tons of sailing. Thousands of other MacGregor owners have had similar experiences."

1994 Macgregor 26 S, This is a slick looking boat in or out of the water and it is absolutely fabulous to sail. Easy and very responsive. One of the unique things is the swing center-board making the boat an auto shoal draft vessel. Light to trailer (1650 lbs) and easy to launch. 45 minutes gets rigging/sails ready for water. Only need 1ft of water to launch, with water ballast filled (1200 lbs) you need 2ft. Drop the center-board and you need another 4 feet. Sailing weight is about 2850 lbs.Put it in the water, have a delightful sail, drop the anchor and camp for the night -- even pull it right up to the beach! Or pull into port and plug in with the 120V shore power hookup using the 120V outlets (3) onboard. The main cabin has a pop-up top for a 6 ft. ht mid-cabin. Snap-on-black canvas all around w/screen in front provides privacy. Aft cabin is 6x7 -- amazingly comfortable for sleeping. The bow contains a 5-1/2 ft V berth with a hatch for ventilation. Galley has a two-burner propane stove, under pull-out table seating a cozy 4 & a sink. Has enclosed area (w/swing door & mirror) for a port-a-potty. All-around life-lines with stain-less Bow pulpit and Stern rail. 6 ft self-bailing cockpit w/attached shade/rain cover is great. Stern contains a huge storage area under a lid. Exterior aft has stainless steel swing down ladder.Gear includes 4 sails: Main, Working Jib, Storm Jib, & a 150 Genoa (has been repaired). Powered by 9.9 Mercury - good condition with electric start from a heavy-duty, deep-volt battery recharged via motor or shore power. Engine props have cover to protect rudder. Throttle and gear control are arms in cockpit. All cushions are in good shape, 3 danforth anchors, cover for main, bags for jibs, dock fenders, dock lines, adult life jackets, misc. tools and pieces and parts. Original trailer /w surge brakes & bearing buddies.. Little wear on tires. Systems tested, hull polished, fresh bottom paint (Interlux VC 17 Extra).
