Where to sail around Zadar?

Yachting in the Zadar area is yachting in a closed sea. Several lines of islands create a well-protected area where even in very strong winds it is possible to sail with only small waves. The bora can be dangerous here, but even it cannot pick up large and dangerous swells. It is the area that is the most suitable for beginners and not very experienced sailors in Croatia. More experienced sailors can opt for the longer and more challenging route via the northern islands of Olib, Silba and Premuda and back via Kornati , which are excellent navigational exercises.

The archipelago consists of 24 large and 300 small islands and reefs of various shapes and sizes. Yachtsmen will find more than 50 safe harbours and anchorages. Among the most beautiful islands in this area are Dugi Otok, Pasman, Uglijan, Ist, Iz, Kornat, Molat, Olib, Vir and Žut, Pag, Ugljan and Premuda, Vrgada. There are also 3 nature parks (Telašćica, North Velebit and Vrana ) and 5 nationalparks (Paklenica, Plitvice, Kornati, Krka and Velebit ) with dozens of lakes and waterfalls, endless olive groves and vineyards.

Kornati

Weather and weather conditions

From the beginning of June to mid-September, the prevailing wind in the Adriatic is a northwesterly wind called the maestral (daily breeze). It usually starts blowing around 10 o'clock and in the afternoon the wind reaches 3-5 Bf, at sunset the wind dies down again. The maestral is considered a good-weather wind because it maintains cloudless blue skies and a comfortable temperature at sea (it brings refreshment and helps to provide pleasant humidity).

  • The months of July to August are particularly suitable for family boat holidays. The winds are mild and the sea is beautifully warm. In the coastal area around Zadar, the prevailing wind in summer is the SSE, which averages around 6-7 knots. The wind is quite stable in summer (lighter winds blow for several hours a day, almost no wind in the evening). In July to August, temperatures in the area reach 26 °C to 29 °C, with a sea temperature of about 24 °C. Beware, in summer the bora can also blow here and reach 7-9 Bf in gusts. If the wind starts to blow, it can last up to 3 days, but there is no danger of dangerous swell caused by the bura in this area.
  • In March and April and from mid-September to the end of October the wind is more variable. The average wind strength in these months is 7-8 knots. There may be strong, gusty winds.

The most frequent wind in Kornati is the bora (NE), the strongest is the jugo (SE). The jugo blows with the greatest force from October to May. During this period it sometimes reaches up to 9 Bf. In summer it blows for 2-3 days and almost never reaches more than 7 Bf. It blows offshore and can raise large waves. The dominant wind in summer is the maestral (NW). The prevailing airflow is from sea to land. Usually there are winds of 1-3 Bf. Strong winds above 6 Bf rarely blow in this area. Thunderstorms occur mainly in November.

City of Zadar

Zadar is a 3,000-year-old port city surrounded by medieval walls and towers. For centuries it has been the capital of Dalmatia - and no wonder. This ancient city has its own unique charm. Zadar is a city of history, monuments, colours and gastronomy.

The city is also famous for its beautiful sunsets, which offer a different combination of colours every day. Alfred Hitchcock, sipping a glass of maraschino on Zadar's waterfront, once said, "It must be the most beautiful sunset in the world!".

yachting zadar

Zadar boasts a number of cultural monuments from the ancient, medieval and Renaissance periods. There are many fine churches with interesting interiors, monasteries, galleries and museums. The city offers more than 600 monuments. Among the greatest jewels is the Church of St. Donatus (Zadar Music Nights are held here every summer), the Romanesque Forum, Kalelarga (the longest and widest street), St. Anastasia, Church of St. Chrysogon, Archaeological Museum, Porta Terraferma city gate, Franciscan Monastery with the Church of St. Francis.

Also worth a visit is Narodni trg (main square), which has been the centre of public life for centuries. The main square is home to the Renaissance town loggia, the town guardhouse, the bell tower and the Old Croatian church of St Lawrence , which is used as a popular café. Near the square is the largest fish market (the best selection of fish in the area), vegetables and fruit (P. Zoraniće Square). The town is built according to Roman urban planning principles from several larger longitudinal streets and a larger number of cross streets, which divided the town into rectangular blocks. The old town is located on a peninsula and is connected to the new construction by a long bridge, which is one of the typical symbols of the town.

Along the waterfront there is a nice promenade where a unique work of art can be seen - the " Sea Organ ", or a perfect natural orchestra. The complex system of pipes, for which the Croatian architect Nikola Bašić has won several international awards, transforms the incoming waves into a huge variety of sounds. The whistles play 7 chords of 5 notes each, this beautiful sea symphony can sometimes be heard up to 3 km away. The sea organ is complemented by the "Salute to the Sun" light installation, which consists of glass panels and several solar panels. The play of colours and light always begins after sunset. Both the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation are located in the westernmost part of the old town (Morske orgulje) and are ideal for romantic relaxation. Along the waterfront you can take a nice walk to the old fishing port of Foša, which is very photogenic due to its picturesque nature.

zadar

The local cuisine is one of the healthiest cuisines in the world and is rightly included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. It offers the best specialties of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean such as lamb and mutton, goat cheese, Parma ham, Dalmatian prosciutto, Pag cheese, salty and pickled anchovies, risotto and brodetto (grilled, covered and grilled), and the local speciality, maraschino cherry liqueur, is a must. The ingredients often used in Zadar cooking are fresh fish, wine, olive oil, seafood, fresh vegetables, herbs and spices.

Where to go for fun in Zadar?

Zadar is very lively in summer. There are many cultural events and festivals, the biggest of which are the Full Moon Night, Zadar of Dreams, Millennium Jump and Kalelarga art. Full Moon Night is the most visited and successful festival on the entire Adriatic coast. It is held, as the name suggests, always under a full moon. It is a festival of gastronomy, culture, ancient crafts, customs and folk costumes, with dancing, music, entertainment, pirates and fishing fleets from the surrounding islands. The festival, which is rich in programmes, is triumphantly concluded with a fireworks display. Kalelarga art is always held during the last three days of July - the historic centre is taken over by street performers, jugglers, acrobats, magicians, musicians and actors.

Islands around Zadar

Legend has it that Kornati is a pile of white rocks thrown into the sea by God . When he turned around, he smiled with excitement - he was very pleased with his result. Kornati NP comprises 89 uninhabited islands and reefs, accessible only by boat. Untouched nature, beautiful bays, rock formations and steep cliffs. A true sailor's paradise awaits you!

Beautiful ancient lighthouses will guide you through the labyrinth of islands. The most beautiful lighthouse is Sestrica , which is definitely worth a visit. Some of the islands offer excellent harbours and anchorages (even used by pirates) thanks to their ruggedness and sheltered bays. Beautiful and well protected bays are for example Vrulje bay , Lavsa or the islet of Levnaka with its sandy beach Lojena. There is a marina and several restaurants. However, there is a shortage of drinking water in NP Kornati. Water and electricity are only available for a few hours every day.

yachting zadar

Several times a day a boat passes between the islands with food, fruit and vegetables (only in high season). Food can also be bought on the island of Kornat (Vrulje and Opat bays), in the ACI marina Piškera (Vela Panitula island) and on the island of Žut. The largest marinas and yachting bases on Kornati are ACI marina Piškera on Vela Panitula island (in the national park, with a shop, water and electricity, showers and toilets) and ACI marina Žut (outside the national park). On Mana Island there are ruins of houses and towers, which are the remains of film sets built for the filming of the 1961 film Stormy Sea.

Admission to Kornati is not based on the number of people, but on the length of the boat. Tickets can be purchased either on site or in advance at the Kornati NP headquarters or the ABA reception in Murter (we recommend buying tickets in advance, they are considerably cheaper). Other presale points: ACI marina Žut, ACI marina Vodice, marina Kremik Primošten, marina Betina Murter, ACI marina Jezera). Price of tickets to Kornati NP: boat up to 11 m length 250 kn (150 kn), 11-18 m 400 kn (250 kn), over 18 m 750 kn (450 kn), diving 300 kn (150 kn), fishing permit 300 kn (150 kn). Prices in brackets are for tickets purchased in advance.

Kornat is the largest island of Kornati National Park. There are countless bays, anchorages and restaurants. The Vrulje bay is definitely worth a visit (shop, several restaurants, anchorage, pier, buoys, dangerous seaW and NW winds), Strižnja, Kravljačica, Lopatica, Potarac, Opat (restaurants, water, electricity, shop, pier, buoys, moorings, dangerous N and SE winds), Ropotnica, Stivina.

Passionate fishermen, diving enthusiasts and biologists will also find something for themselves. A rich fish and cephalopod fishery, diverse fauna and flora. Beware, if you want to fish or dive, you need a permit (each costs 150 kn/day)! A renowned dive site is at the island of Rasip. Diving is only possible with a certified agency, otherwise there is a heavy fine! A list of certified agencies can be found here .

Island of Ugljan

Ugljan is a picturesque island covered with fig trees, vines and olive trees, from which the highest quality olive oil is produced. The island of Ugljan has a long tradition of fishing and is considered the most important fishing centre in the Adriatic Sea. The most beautiful fishing town is considered to be the town of Kali, which is definitely worth a visit!

The eastern part of the island of Ugljan is lower and more rugged, with most of the inhabited towns and villages (Ugljan, Sutomiščica, Poljana, Preko, Kali, Kuklica). The most famous bays on the eastern side of the island are Južna luka (beach), Pavlešina (pier), Kobiljak (nice snorkeling, be careful - there are a lot of rocks), Prtljung (anchor(beach), Želijna Vela (beach), Svitla, Vela Lamjana (fishing harbour, boat building), Mala Lamjana (anchorage, buoys, fish farming), Sabušica (beach suitable for children).

The western part of the island is more difficult to access, rather deserted, uninhabited. However, there are nice, deserted bays and places for swimming.

Where to anchor on Ugljan

  • Port Ugljan - a small harbour in a fishing village, mostly occupied by fishing boats. There is a berth for sailing boats at the pier with a depth of 3 m, but it is only sporadically free. There are three restaurants (Kaleta, Apolo, Trapula) and cafes in the harbour. Local food can be bought at the fish market. There is also a post office, an ATM and two supermarkets. North of the harbour there is the church of St. Jerome and a nice beach. The approach should be from the south-east direction, because of the shallow water (we recommend to study the Pilot or the 888 guide), watch out for the current! In the nearby Batalaza bay, north of the harbour, we recommend snorkelling (there is a pier, anchorage and beach.
  • Olive Island marina (Sutomišćica) - a modern clean family marina offering 200 berths and easily accessible even at night thanks to the lighthouse at the entrance to the bay and marina). The marina is well protected and is rarely crowded. There are showers and toilets, a technical service, a yacht shop and a car and scooter rental service. For weather updates, you'll appreciate WiFi and a good restaurant, Olive Garden, to fill your stomach.
  • Port Poljana - a small, often busy marina.
  • Marina Preko - a nice marina in the attractive town of Preko. The marina offers 85 berths and is often full in summer. In addition to showers, technical service and WiFi, there is a diving center, doctor and dentist. There are countless bars and restaurants on the waterfront. Behind the marina is a nice beach.

Kali is a beautiful fishing town that is definitely worth a visit. There are three small harbours full of fishing boats and fishermen repairing their nets. Old stone houses, narrow streets, dry walls and olive groves complete the atmosphere. Above the town is a hill with the baroque church of St. Lawrence and a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Every year in July/August, various festivals and fishing festivals are held here. In the old fishing port of Kali, the depth is 3 m and you can usually only stand in the fishing boat. If you ask and land with permission, you will be able to go overboard the fishing boat to the shore and visit the local brine factory, a fish processing factory . For really little money, you can taste herring in all sorts of ways here, and you can buy delicious canned herring to go at the factory. It's an experience that you definitely don't want to miss and you'll be smelling it for a long time.

  • You can also anchor at the pier in the next bay, Batalaža , from where you can take a nice walk to the old fishing port of Kali and the centre. In the bay, however, be careful of the rocks under the water. Study the Pilot well.
  • The port of Kuklica is located in the eponymous, rather lively village of Kuklica. Finding a post office, ATM or doctor here is no problem. For parking there is a small marina with a pier and muring. Take advantage of Pier B, which is for guests. In the marina you will find water and electricity connection, showers and toilets. However, the idyllic atmosphere can be compromised by the unpleasant jugo wind. On the waterfront, in addition to restaurants and a few cafes, you'll find St. Paul's Church and a small local disco.

There are many nice swimming spots in the area. The coastline of the Zaglav peninsula is worth exploring. There are several pebble beaches with a gradual entrance to the sea and pine forests. There is also a nice beach in Sabušica bay on the southwest side of the island. The beach is suitable for the smallest children (the shore is paved with concrete with a gradual entry into the sea, with fine sand on the bottom).

Ugljan

Island of Molat

A small island, surrounded by dozens of smaller islands. The eastern coast of the island is rugged and there are countless small bays. The western side of the island is rougher, steep and not very rugged, facing the open sea. Windier and popular among yachtsmen are the pretty harbour of Molat (Lucina), Brgulje in the well-protected Brgulje Bay (dangerous wind and swell from the N, SE) and Zapuntel. Grocery stores here are quite expensive. The island is a paradise for recreational fishermen (beware, you need a permit!).

  • Molat Harbour - a picturesque harbour, offers mooring with muring, several water and electricity connections, showers and toilets. Water can only be pumped in sometimes (100 litres for 30 kuna). There are several restaurants, a cafe and a shop. In the morning it is possible to buy fresh bread from the baker. A walk to the nearby hill is also pleasant. North of the harbour is a nice bay and anchorage Podgarbe.
  • Brgulje harbour - there is a mooring, water (not always available) and electricity connections, a shop and two restaurants. There are buoys between the harbour and Brgulje island. North of the harbour there is a mooring (sand and pebbles on the bottom, the anchor holds fairly well). Dangerous wind is jugo, there is also a risk of swell!
  • Zapuntel - a small harbour, there is a pier, buoys and several muring stands (depth up to 4 metres), a shop and a bakery.

The eight most beautiful bays on the island of Molat

Vodina Trata (beware, near the rocks under the water, details in Navionics), Zadarljan, Vodomarka (beach, anchorage, protected N and NW winds), Karstulj (anchorage, protected from N and N winds), Lipic (beach and anchorage, protected from N and N winds), Jazi (nice anchorage, small pier, bakery, sheltered from N and NW winds, dangerous N and NW winds or bura, nearby nice nature, hiking trail to Molat), Konopljika bay (anchorage) and Uvala Sabusa anchorage (SW of the island).

Molat

Island of Istria

Beautiful harbour Ist definitely worth a visit. It is located in a picturesque bay. There are piers with muring (depth 1-5 m), water and electricity connections, showers and toilets, about four restaurants, a supermarket and a diving centre. A nice walk to the chapel. At night there are occasional strong gusts of the bora. The harbour is not safe if the yugo is blowing .

There is a nice beach in the northern part of the bay. Caution! Be careful of isolated dangers when coming into the bay (we recommend studying 888). Other bays on the island of Ist are Turtula (anchorage), Mjake (buoy) and Kosirača (pier).

There is

Premuda Island

If you want to spend a few days in a place forgotten by the world, surrounded by nature, crystal clear water and the ever-present scent of oleanders, anchor at Premuda Island. This magical island is definitely worth a visit! The island has low forests, olive groves, fig trees and vineyards. On the south-west coast there are wonderful diving and snorkelling spots (the underwater caves known as the "Cathedral" at Cape Lopata - the southernmost tip of the island, a colourful underwater wall with rich fauna in front of Široka Bay, the sunken wreck of the Istvan and many colourful rocks).

Fishing enthusiasts will also find something to enjoy! The port of Krijal is nice (mostly occupied). There are piers for boats up to 10 meters and buoys, about 6 restaurants and a shop. In strong westerly winds and southerly winds there is a swell in front of the harbour. North of the harbour there is a nice beach.

Seven of the most beautiful bays on Premuda:

Dobra (beach, anchorage, must go ashore, steep rocky shores), Letnja (anchorage, little room to anchor, steep rocky shores), Široka (anchorage(anchorage, beach, nice diving and snorkelling - coloured wall), Zaporat (anchorageZaporat (anchorage and beach), Premuda bay (two anchorages and beach), Nozdre (anchorage), Loza (pier). The Istvan shipwreck is only accessible to experienced divers. It is located 8 NM west of the island of Premuda (exact GPS position: 44°08'55.7 "N 14°15'45.4 "E) at a depth of 30-40 m.

Premiere

Island of Dugi Otok

The largest island of the Zadar archipelago, also known as the island full of colours and contrasts. Towards the open sea the coastline is rugged, while in the south of the island there are deserted bays and fascinating steep cliffs. Worth a visit are Lučica Bay, where there is a sunken shipwreck (1 m deep), Mir Bay in the Telaš Nature Parkćica (salt lake, very pleasant walk and beautiful sunset), the picturesque harbour and the underwater caves of Brbinj. The most beautiful beaches (suitable for small children) are in Sakarun Bay, in the northern part of Pantera Bay and near Bozava. There are also several nice bays with beaches on the east coast (beware, if the wind blows yugo, there are big waves). There are also nice hiking and cycling trails on the island.

Marina Veli Rat (Cuna bay) - located on the northeast of Dugi Otok in Cuna bay and offers about 100 berths. Services: water and electricity connections (only available for a few hours in the morning and evening, tokens at the harbour master), clean and well maintained, showers and toilets, restaurants (TIM, Lanterna, Verunic), supermarket, farmers market. Opposite the harbour there are two more restaurants (Verona and DiM) with a pier (for boats up to 2 m deep). There are buoys in Cuna bay (fee 17 kn/m). The approach to Cuna Bay is quite challenging in terms of navigation. Sailors who are unfamiliar with the area should arrive during daylight hours. About 5 km northwest of the harbour is the tallest lighthouse on the Adriatic coast, dating from 1849. 100,000 egg whites were added to the concrete mix to make the lighthouse more resistant to wind and sea. It's a magical place and definitely worth a walk!

In front of Pantera Bay is the sunken wreck of an Italian merchant ship from 1984 and a shoal (we recommend studying 888). Next to it is Lučica Bay, where there is also a shipwreck about 1 m below the surface (there is also a diving base). In the northern part of Pantera bay (there are buoys) there is a nice sandy beach.

Other nice marinas on Dugi Otok

  • Sali harbour - a picturesque harbour with muringas, there are about 80 berths, the harbour is very well stocked with food. The inner harbour is full of colourful fishing boats. In summer the main harbour is also quite crowded. Nearby is the bay of Sašćica.
  • Port of Zaglav - there is a pier offering mooring with muring, moorings in Triluke bay, petrol station (fuel is about 10% morethan on the mainland, so you almost never wait here), water and electricity connection, you can buy gas bottles, there is a shop and restaurant Roko on the waterfront.
  • Žman harbour - muring berth with water and electricity, mooring in Žmanćica bay (if the wind blows, the mooring is not safe). Dangerous wind from NE. There is nice snorkeling here.
  • Luka harbour - harbour in a small quiet village, it is possible to moor on the quay (there are several muring, fee 15 kn/m), anchor in the bay (depth 6-7 m) or moor on a buoy. On the shore there is a water and electricity connection, a cafe restaurant and bar (we recommend Alen restaurant and bar).
  • Brbinj harbour - really very nice, picturesque harbour and nice bay Bok, there is a very good restaurant Antonio, a farmers market where you can buy vegetables, fruit and fish. In the harbour you can connect to WIFI. There is a pier with several muringas and water and electricity connection. Just around the corner (towards the north) is the bay of Lucina with a nice restaurant. There are a lot of buoys. Beware, if the wind is blowing yugo, there are strong gusts in both bays!
  • Bozava harbour - a picturesque harbour surrounded by nature and pine forests. Originally a fishing town, nowadays quite a busy resort with several hotels. Definitely worth a visit. One of the most beautiful beaches on the island is located here. The beach has pebbles, sand in places and a gradual entrance to the sea and crystal clear water. The beach is suitable for small children. There is a harbour with a pier and muringes. Nice walk along the seafront, in the shade of pine trees. There is a nice stone church in the town.

The six most beautiful bays on Dugi Otok

Telašćica bay (nature park) - not part of NP Kornati, since 2013 fees apply (up to 11 m 200 kn, 11-18 m 350 kn, 18-25 m 700 kn). In summer there are dangerous wind gusts from the NE. Beware of shallows and rocks (must be studied in Navionics or 888)! flows, frequented anchorage, strong gusts from the north and east in summer, no swell), Ćuška Duboka, Kruševica, Magrovica. In each bay there are buoys and restaurants. The eastern part of the island can be reached via the Mala Proversa canal between Dugi Otok and Katina Island. This fairway is 40 m wide and the maximum speed is 5 knots. In front of the canal there is a pier (mostly occupied, you can land with dinghy) and buoys (60 kn per person).

Dugi otok

Take a look at the port of Kablin on the island of Sestrunj. About half an hour from the harbour is the hilltop village of Sestrun. It's a very interesting place full of old American cars belonging to emigrants who came back home to retire. On Dugi Otok, my favourite places are the port of Brbinj, the marina of Veli Rat and the bay of Lučica in the north of the island. It has a shipwreck in a shallow depth, a Czech camp with Czech-speaking, friendly staff and reasonably priced food. The port of Bozava is very nice with good shopping and the waterfront offers nice cafes. In the south of the island the bay of Telasic and the salt lake Mir are worth a visit. TIP yachting.com

island of Iz

The marina IŽ Veli is worth a visit - very nice, small marina, offers 130 berths, water and electricity connection, showers and toilets and technical service. There are three supermarkets, two bakeries and several really good restaurants and konob (traditional Croatian restaurants mostly with local specialties).

Early in the morning you can buy fresh fish at the local farmer's market. The locals also sell homemade wine and olive oil or local ceramics (made in the traditional Iža way). The workshop and ceramics shop is run by the Petrovic family. An interesting place on the island of Iž is the battlefield in the bay of Knež, which is set in beautiful nature. The bay has a pier, buoys, water, electricity, a shop and several restaurants. In the next bay there is the IŽ Mali ferry port (shop, cafes and playground).

ACI marina on the island of IŽ is a very nice marina. There is an excellent restaurant called Mandrac by the church - have a steak or rumsteak there. Its specialty is 600 gram steaks, and only the biggest eaters can handle such a steak. TIP yachting.com

WHEN TO CHARTER IN ZADAR

The charter season in Zadar begins in April and lasts until November. The sailing conditions are exquisite, and the weather is excellent all year round. We recommend booking your yacht charter in Zadar at the end of June and first 2 weeks of July, so you can enjoy ideal weather conditions.

The most popular time for a yacht charter in Zadar region is during the summer months i.e. between June and September. Summer in this region means that you will be blessed with 13 hours of sunshine per day and temperatures between 25 and 30 C ° (77-86 Fahrenheit).

The Mediterranean climate promises a dry and warm summer with winds of no more than 10-20 knots. The peak season for sailors is July and August, with an insanely high number of sunny days and a great number of yachts on the water, while June, September, and October offer equally satisfying sailing conditions but fewer crowds.

For a truly tranquil yacht charter in Zadar, April, May, and November are ideal for exploring the 300+ islands, islets, and reefs. Thanks to the low boat traffic, the underwater world is at its peak during these months. You will have the opportunity to explore the region in all its glory, without the summer crowds. Imagine waking up on your yacht in a peaceful, pristine bay and seeing curious dolphins jumping around your boat.

The winds are particularly reliable during the yachting season when local yacht lovers claim they can set their watch by relying on their frequency. The mistral wind blows during the day, peaking between 9 am and 12 pm, then taking a break for a couple of hours before returning at 3 pm (“after lunch”) for a few more hours until dusk, when the winds die down to a light breeze.

Yacht Charter in Zadar air temperature graph

Zadar has mild winters and warm summers, but the temperatures are never too extreme. In the yacht charter season from May to September, conditions are practically perfect – the temperature is somewhere between 20 and 25 C °   (68-77 Fahrenheit) which means swimsuits, light clothes and bare feet are the order of the day.

The Adriatic is very well protected and enclosed, so temperatures never drop below 15 degrees, and the sea is swimmable all year round. By the end of May, swimming in the sea becomes pleasant and refreshing at around 20 degrees, and by the end of August, at 25 degrees, it feels like you are swimming in a pool.

The truth is, Pag is bare due to strong Bura winds from the north, although its moonlike appearance made Pag a perfect filming location for multiple TV shows like ‘The Terror’ , ‘Winnetou’, ‘Top Gear’ and many commercials for famous brands like Bugatti, Rimac and Audi.

Apart from UNESCO heritage treasures like Paška lace , Pag conceals another gem – the impressive Zrće beach , also known as the “Croatian Ibiza”, where you can moor your yacht at Club Noa and enjoy the beats from your yacht deck.

About us

OUR STORY: YACHTING IS OUR LIFE

Yacht IN was founded in 2010 with one mission: to become the region’s leading service provider for global citizens who seek expertise and the highest quality, in maintaining a lifestyle of passion and luxury.

We must, however, point out that our team was in the yachting business years before 2010. Our founders, Slaven and Matija, were working in the industry for years before they decided to combine their experience, creativity and vision behind Yacht IN.

About us

Slaven Knežević perfected his role as super yacht captain while Matija Zelić matured as yacht sales specialist in world’s most eminent shipyards.

Over the course of the years, other professionals have joined the team, and Yacht IN has grown into a renowned and trusted name in the yachting industry.

About us

Today, we can proudly say that we have fulfilled the mission we set out when we started Yacht IN. However, we still work hard every day to improve our operations and to give you the best possible personalized service.

We strive to go beyond expectations excelling in all areas of our business: yacht sales, yacht charter and yacht management while we continue to innovate, explore and evolve.

It is true that a ship is safe in the harbour, but that is not what a ship is built for. The same goes for us!

What does skipper do on a yacht?

When it comes to navigation and safety at sea, skipper is fully in charge of the yacht. He should have well developed organisation and communication skills, to harmonise the crew's wishes with the actual maritime situation.

A good skipper should make the guests aboard feel comfortable, relaxed and safe on their sailing trip . Croatian skippers are communicative, opened and full of tips for guests visiting this hidden Mediterranean gem. It is customary to take care for skippers meals and food aboard.

Where do we buy supplies for yacht charter?

It is recommended to supply your yacht at least for the first two days at sea. You will have plenty of time before embarkationto do that or pre-order the supplies at the provisioning company . Every marina in Croatia has shops and supermarkets, where you can buy as much as you need for one week. There will be plenty of stops on route, and you can always buy fresh bread, vegetables, fruit, meat and fish, even on the most remote Croatian islands . Breakfast and a quick afternoon snack can be prepared on board. You will have lots of options to explore Croatian delicacies  and try traditional culinary works of art in local restaurants. Your knowledgeable skipper knows best ones...

If you are dining outside, it is customary to invite your skipper to join you at the table. However, if you prefer to dine in privacy, your skipper can eat separately so kindly ensure some pocket money for his meals. Between 30 and 40€ should do.

What are the moorig fees and marina costs?

Port fees at village harbours start at 50€ per night for 40 foot sailing yacht  and can go up to 120€ in premium  ACI marinas . For catamarans  the cost goes up for  50%. The final price also depends on the boat length and the level of marina service and usually includes fresh-water refill, shore power, toilet and use of bathroom facilities . Buoy charge ranges from  30 to 50€ . Anchoring is free of charge. A mixture of above options gives the best balance through the week for most groups.

What should I bring on a sailing charter?

8 things  you don't want to forget to take on a sailing trip:

  • boarding pass and reservation documents
  • sun protection (sun lotion, sunglasses for UV protection, hat)
  • bathing suit or a swimsuit (3-5 pairs)
  • your passport, or personal ID, enough cash
  • swimming towels
  • your personal items (prescription pills, medicine for allergy...)
  • a wind stopper or a wind breaker in summer a long-sleeved cardigan would do
  • positive vibes (leave your worries at home)

With plenty of sun, Croatia is one of the sunniest European destinations. Climate along the Adriatic coast in summer is quite dry and hot. When taking a sailing trip in summer, bring bathing suite, extra swimming towels, and your personal wardrobe. It is highly recommended to bring a soft handbag a duffel bag instead of a plastic suitcase and remember to pack light .

Zadar Sailing Trips: A Complete Guide to Boat Tours, Courses, Sail Schools, and Yacht Charter, in Zadar, Croatia

Thinking about taking a sailing trip in Zadar?

We spent months sailing in the north of Croatia in the Zadar Archipelago and discovered everything you need to know about Zadar sailing trips.

At the beginning of 2022, we traveled to Zadar, Croatia, to buy a sailboat , learn to sail, and spend a season sailing the Adriatic Sea. After four years of traveling by van, we were excited about our sea change. But there was one problem… we didn’t know how to sail.  So, we set about finding a sailing instructor to show us the ropes (so to speak) and teach us to sail. In doing so, we learned all about sailing Zadar and the fantastic range of Zadar sailing trips, tours, courses, and experiences available.

For those looking for a Croatian sailing experience, Zadar offers something for everyone. Take a Zadar sailing trip or tour, learn to sail, upgrade your qualifications or charter your own private yacht. The number and variety of Zadar sailing trips are practically endless.

What’s so Great About Sailing Zadar Croatia

The beautiful city of Zadar in northern Dalmatia is one of Croatia’s oldest cities and the perfect place to start your Croatian sailing adventure.

The pretty, historic old town sits behind world heritage-listed stone walls that date back to the 12th century. Within the fortifications lies a maze of narrow, cobblestoned streets weaving between old sandstone buildings with red-tiled rooves, recalling its Roman origins. The port city has a long maritime history that stretches back into antiquity.

Today, it has become a popular tourist destination for Croatians, Europeans, and visitors from all over the world. The bustling town comes alive in the summertime with markets, restaurants, cafes, and bars that spill out into the picturesque streets.

Off the coast of the city, the group of islands that form the Zadar Archipelago features striking landscapes and quaint villages.

You’ll find uninhabited islands with hidden bays and crystal clear waters, and national parks teeming with life and brimming with beauty. Pods of dolphins frolic in the water interacting with sailboats, all the while seabirds wheel overhead.

The larger islands here are scattered with picturesque settlements, tiny villages, and historic medieval buildings. Like the rest of the Croatian Adriatic, the coast and islands off Zadar offer a sailor’s paradise. In addition to the stunning natural beauty and storied history, the islands provide optimal sailing conditions without swell, tides, or dangerous unmarked reefs. What’s more, consistent and mostly predictable weather patterns prevail here, making planning relatively straightforward and safe. With so much to recommend about this famous sailing ground, it is little wonder that there are plenty of options when it comes to choosing your own Zadar sailing adventure.

Before you set sail, be sure to wander the beautifully preserved and historic old town, walk along the quay and see the ferries and cruise ships, as well as the famous sea organ, and enjoy the vibrant dining and bar scene Zadar has to offer.

With so many boats bobbing around the Adriatic, it is easy to find one to charter. However, given Croatia’s enormous popularity as a sailing ground in summer, to secure the boat you want it is recommended to book early!

Yachting.com offers a list of boats available for charter, with or without a skipper.

Bare Boat Charter Zadar without Skipper

Zadar is a great place to charter a rental boat with family or friends. If you are an experienced sailor with the minimum certifications you can rent a boat and skipper it yourself in Zadar. Croatia issues its own skippers ticket but also recognizes marine qualifications from many places around the world. The Croatian Ministry of Maritime Affairs has a list of the nautical qualifications recognized in Croatia .

Bareboat charter in Zadar, without skipper, crew, or provisions starts from around €70 per day for a smaller (<30 ft), older (pre-1990s) in low season through to modern yachts over 50 feet which can cost well over a thousand euro per day in high season.

Boat Charter with Skipper in Zadar

If you don’t have the experience, the qualifications, or the inclination to sail yourself, but are still interested in an independent, self-directed sailing holiday in Zadar, hiring a skipper along with a boat is simple here. Simply put in a request when enquiring about a charter boat and you will be put in touch with a professional skipper.

The cost of a skipper is generally about €200 per day, they will need a private cabin onboard and food.

What to See When Sailing Zadar Croatia

Once you set sail from Zadar, the opportunities are endless.

The Zadar Archipelago is made up of 15 major islands and hundreds of smaller ones. Each offers a multitude of bays, beaches, coves, traditional villages, and uninhabited islands to explore.

While the number of things to do and see on the seas around Zadar is limitless there are some key experiences that belong on any sailing tour in Zadar.

Kornati National Park

The protected nautical paradise of Kornati National Park includes 80+ islands and is one of Croatia’s most popular marine recreational areas featuring diving, sailing, camping & hiking.

Ugland is not only the closest island to Zadar it is also the largest of the Zadar islands. Perhaps most importantly, it is regarded as the Olive Island of Zadar.

The island is covered with thousands of olive trees and produces some of the best olive oil in the region. The small village of Muline is the best place to uncover the ancient traditions of olive oil making on the island of Ugland.

Outside of its abundance of olive trees, Ugland has many cycling routes, monasteries, churches, and views over beautiful bays. One could easily spend an active weekend soaking in the Croatian lifestyle on this Zadar island.

Island villages do not come more charming or more authentic than Veli Iž. Trapped in time, not much has changed here but that is exactly why you should visit. Stroll through the streets, take a walk along the sea wall, and dine on fresh seafood. This quiet and authentic town is definitely worth a stop on your Zadar sailing trip.

Another charming, quaint village, in the Zadar archipelago, is Sali. Sali has a bit more going on than Veli Iž (complete with a nightclub that operates during the summer season). Sali is also a great jumping-off point for Kornati National Park which you will definitely not want to miss when sailing Zadar.

One of the most famous beaches in the Zadar region, Sakarun is located on the island of Dugi Otok. Its popularity is perhaps due to the fact that the beach is in fact white silica sand, a sight more common in the Caribbean than on the coast of Croatia. It is a great place to spend an afternoon taking long beach walks, swimming in the crystal clear water, and basking in the Croatian sun.

To the north of Zadar, one of the price jewels of the Zadar Archipelago is the island of Pag. This narrow island is home to one of Croatia’s most prized products, Pag cheese (Paski Sir) made with sheep’s milk.

The island of Pag may also sound familiar as it is home to one of Croatia’s most notable party beaches, Zrce. Zrce comes to life during the summer with regular music festivals featuring international DJs making it the place to be for people looking to party in Croatia.

What’s the Best Time to Take a Sailing Trip in Zadar?

Sailing in Croatia during the summer months is extremely popular. We recommend booking a sailing trip in Zadar during May or September. During this time you can expect to find fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Coming earlier or later may mean that many of the restaurants, bars, and other activities are closed. We originally visited Zadar in April and there were only a handful of places open. When we returned in May, the city was buzzing with energy and people.

Can I Take Children on a Sailing Tour in Zadar?

Absolutely. Children will absolutely love a sailing trip in Zadar. One of the benefits of sailing in the Adriatic Sea and the protection of the islands is that it is (generally) relatively calm when compared to sailing in the open ocean.

Make sure you discuss with your tour operator which tour is best suited for keeping children comfortable and safe!

In 2016, recently single, without a job, and an expiring lease I took off on my first solo backpacking trip, with a one-way ticket to Bangkok and a well-thumbed Lonely Planet guide. From there I wandered Southeast and Central Asia, traveled the Great Steppe, and made my way across Russia and throughout Europe.

Along the way I met Kelli, who, despite having a less frantic travel style, shared my my restless spirit and passion for exploration. Together, we embarked on a new journey, van life. Over four years we travelled across three different continents with three different vans.

In 2022, as the world began to re-open post COVID we took an opportunity to realise a long held dream, to live aboard a sailboat. Since then we have spent two summers in the Mediterranean, sailing and living aboard our little sail boat Whisper. When we aren't sailing we continue to live our nomadic lifestyle, guided by a philosophy of slow travel and self directed adventure be it by van or backpacking.

We find excitement through our journey into the unknown, stillness and content in the beauty of the places we discover and we find ourselves in the vastness of our world.

Hopefully, we can help you find what you're looking for too. Get lost with us and find your own path.

Zadar and the surrounding tourist regions are located in the centre of the Croatian Adriatic, in the most indented part of the Adriatic coast. For centuries the capital of Dalmatia and today the centre of its northern part, Zadar is a city with rich cultural heritage which is evident at every step: the Roman Forum, St. Donat, Romanesque church of St. Marie And St. Grisogono, Cathedral St. Anastasia, the People's Square and many other sights are just some of the reasons for coming.

Visit one of numerous restaurants and taverns of Zadar, taste the local specialties and famous maraschino liqueur. This unique drink was popular in European courts (London, Vienna, Moscow), produced in Zadar since 1821.

During your stay in Zadar, do not miss the sunset. Famous Alfred Hitchcock said: "It must be the most beautiful sunset in the world!" To complete the experience, the largest sea organ in the world was built here together with Greeting to the Sun installation, consisting of three hundred multi-layered glass panels through which the colours of the lights exchange in the rhythm of the waves with the comforting sounds of the sea organ. Summer fun in Zadar is guaranteed because of numerous interesting events such as: Zadar of your dreams - international festival of contemporary theatre, Garden Festival, Zadar Theatre summer, Mitra Zonata - festival of the sea organ, Musical Evenings in St. Donat, the famous Full Moon Nights, when many boats on the waterfront converted to floating stalls that offer the best tuna, sardines, cheese, brandy and other delicacies.

ABOUT ZADAR

Zadar, located in the north of Dalmatia is one of our largest coastal cities with roughly 75 000 residents.  The city itself is the oldest continuously inhabited in Croatia, first organized as Roman Iadera around 50 BC.

The old Zadar is one of the most popular yacht rental destinations in Croatia, and its sailing area is well worth exploring. But don’t take our word on it, as it was pronounced the best European destination in 2016. Not unlike many other of our coastal cities, Zadar is home to some beautiful landmarks, such as the St. Donatus cathedral, and the Roman forum remains around which the city was built. According to Alfred Hitchcock the city is also home to “the most beautiful sunset in the world” which you can now enjoy while listening to the one of a kind sea organ, an instrument powered by waves.

ZADAR YACHT CHARTER

Zadar yacht rental gets you access to all of the nearby islands, and an enjoyable sailing holiday in the Adriatic. Pašman channel, which is an area of land between Zadar and the nearby Pašman Island, hides many beautiful secrets. Small and charming Galešnjak is one of them, a natural hearth shaped island unique in the world. Molat is also among the Islands you’ll likely visit sailing Zadar area, along with the beautiful Zapuntel bay. If you’re a licensed fisherman, Zadar area is the perfect choice, being perhaps the part of the Adriatic richest with sealife. Snorkeling is another activity to enjoy while sailing Zadar area, as the underwater world is simply amazing. If you’re a foodie, Zadar area will be especially enjoyable as you will try some of the authentic Croatian dishes.

You can charter a bareboat, skippered or crewed sailboat, catamaran, gulet or motor yacht from Zadar. There’s a variety of yacht sizes available for rental in this destination with YachtHoliday! Contact us and let us find the perfect yacht for your needs.
