William Thomas Kinkade III (January 19, 1958 – April 6, 2012) was an American painter of popular realistic , pastoral, and idyllic subjects. He is notable for the mass marketing of his work as printed reproductions and other licensed products via the Thomas Kinkade Company. He characterized himself as "Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light", a phrase he protected through trademark but which was originally used to describe the British master J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). According to Kinkade's company, one in every twenty American homes owns a copy of one of his paintings. Despite wide commercial success throughout his life, Kinkade is generally held in low esteem by art critics; his pastoral paintings have been described as maudlin and overly sentimental. William Thomas Kinkade was born on January 19, 1958, in Sacramento County, California. He grew up in the town of Placerville, graduated from El Dorado High School in 1976, and attended the University of California, Berkeley, and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He married Nanette Willey in 1982, and the couple had four daughters: Merritt (b. 1988), Chandler (b. 1991), Winsor (b. 1995) and Everett (b. 1997), all named for famous artists. He and his wife had been separated for over a year before his death in 2012. Some of the people who mentored and taught Kinkade prior to college were Charles Bell and Glenn Wessels. Wessels encouraged Kinkade to go to the University of California at Berkeley. Kinkade's relationship with Wessels is the subject of a semi-autobiographical film released in 2008, Christmas Cottage. After two years of general education at Berkeley, Kinkade transferred to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In June 1980, Kinkade spent a summer traveling across the United States with his college friend James Gurney. The two of them finished their journey in New York and secured a contract with Guptill Publications to produce a sketching handbook. Two years later they produced The Artist's Guide to Sketching, which was one of Guptill Publications' best-sellers that year. The success of the book led them both to Ralph Bakshi Studios where they created background art for the 1983 animated feature film Fire and Ice. While working on the film, Kinkade began to explore the depiction of light and of imagined worlds. After the film, Kinkade earned his living as a painter, selling his originals in galleries throughout California. Recurring features of Kinkade's paintings are their glowing highlights and pastel colors. Rendered in highly idealistic values of American scene painting , his works often portray bucolic and idyllic settings such as gardens, streams, stone cottages, lighthouses and Main Streets. His hometown of Placerville (where his works are omnipresent) was the inspiration for many of his street and snow scenes. He also depicted various Christian themes including the Christian cross and churches. Kinkade said he was placing emphasis on the value of simple pleasures and that his intent was to communicate inspirational, life-affirming messages through his paintings. A self-described "devout Christian" (even giving all four of his children the middle name "Christian"), Kinkade believed he gained his inspiration from his religious beliefs and that his work was intended to contain a larger moral dimension. He also said that his goal as an artist was to touch people of all faiths and to bring a sense of peace into their lives through the images he created. Many pictures contain specific chapter-and-verse allusions to Bible passages.

Sailing day.

Sailing Day

As a young man I often felt the urge to paint in the manner of the French Impressionist masters through my alter-ego, Robert Girrard.

The subject for Sailing Day has been captured many times by Manet or Pissaro, both of whom seemed transfixed by the effects of light dancing upon the water.

In my persona as Robert Girrard I celebrate the language of nature at its most joyful. Every artist knows that nature has many moods, but I am frequently happiest when, as in Sailing Day , God's green earth invites me to put on my beret and share the inspiring passion of the moment.

Description

Additional information.

In Perseverance ; thunder crashes, sails billow, waves toss the fragile boat. We see that the clouds are about to break. The sea will calm; the sailor’s perseverance will soon be rewarded by a return to God’s safe heaven. Perhaps this painting can assure each of us that if we can simply persevere, God’s hand of love will soon disperse each storm.

thomas kinkade sailboat paintings

It has been five years since the death of “Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade in his Monte Sereno home launched months of intrigue and antagonism.

Kinkade was known for his paintings — some called them kitsch — of storybook cottages and idyllic street scenes. Millions of Americans owned the images, most of them reproductions that had been touched up with brush strokes by workers at his Morgan Hill factory. They were sold in hundreds of Thomas Kinkade Signature Galleries across the country.

In 2010, Kinkade’s art company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

On a Saturday morning in April 2012, it was announced that the 54-year-old Kinkade had been found dead in bed at his home on Ridgecrest Avenue in Monte Sereno. That was the first of the surprising developments.

April 6, 2012: Thomas Kinkade, the “Painter of Light” and one of the most popular artists in America, died suddenly at his home.

His family said in a statement that his death appeared to be from natural causes. “Thom provided a wonderful life for his family, ” his wife, Nanette, said in a statement. “We are shocked and saddened by his death.”

April 9, 2012 : Amy Pinto, 48, told a reporter that she was in the house with Kinkade when he died. Nanette and the couple’s two teenage daughters were in Australia, she said.

“He died in his sleep, very happy, in the house he built, with the paintings he loved, and the woman he loved,” Pinto said.

She said they started dating 18 months previous, about six months after Nanette filed for legal separation.

April 12, 2012: Kinkade’s brother, Pat, talked about his brother’s “inner demons,” and the artist’s Los Gatos friends opened up about Kinkade’s heavy drinking in recent years: “With a restricted driver’s license from a 2010 drunken driving arrest … (he had) a driver who escorted him around town. He would often mix water with $200 bottles of Silver Oak cabernet.”

April 16, 2012: A judge granted a restraining order requested by Kinkade’s company that barred Pinto from speaking publicly about the artist and her relationship with him.

Windermere Holdings, acting as a trustee and executor of the Kinkade Family Trust, said that the artist’s girlfriend — the documents refer to her as Amy Pinto-Walsh, her name in her earlier marriage — broke the rules of a confidentiality agreement she signed last year by talking to reporters and threatening to reveal Kinkade’s business and personal secrets.

“This threat is not just a mean-spirited act of betrayal, but a calculated attempt to garner money and fame at the expense of the grieving Kinkade family, including his wife and four daughters, ” said the a request for the restraining order filed by the holding company.

May 9, 2012: An autopsy report released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office reveals “a lethal level” of alcohol, combined with benzodiazepine, the anti-anxiety medication known as Valium, in Kinkade’s blood.

It went on to say that Amy Pinto had found him unresponsive in his bed and called police at 11:15 a.m. She told authorities he had been drinking all night. “He was last known to be alive approximately four hours prior, ” the report said.

June 11, 2012 : Court documents obtained by the Mercury News reveal that Amy Pinto had produced barely legible, handwritten notes that she says show Kinkade intended to leave her his Monte Sereno house and $10 million to establish a museum of his original paintings there. She also sought control of $66.3 million from Kinkade’s estate.

The note in full: I, Thomas Kinkade, being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath to Amy Pinto Walsh $10,000,000 in cash from my corporate policy and I give her the house at 16324 and 16342 Ridgecrest Avenue for her security. Thomas Kinkade Nov. 18, 2011

Nanette Kinkade has claimed in court documents that Pinto is a gold-digger intent on fleecing the estate.

Dec. 19, 2012: Lawyers for Nanette Kinkade and Amy Pinto announced they had reached a secret settlement . No details were released, and Pinto agreed to remain silent as part of the deal. The only statement was this: “Putting Mr. Kinkade’s message of love, spirituality, and optimism at the forefront, the parties are pleased that they have honored Mr. Kinkade by resolving their differences amicably.”

And despite the public sniping in the months before the settlement, the parties have since remained silent.

Thomas Kinkade, 'Painter of Light,' Has Died Suddenly at 54 (Updated)

The "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade has died Friday in his California home, according to the San Jose Mercury New s . He was 54. A statement from the family said that his death appeared to be from natural causes, the newspaper reports.

The Christian artist became well known for his paintings of idyllic cottages, creating at least 1,000 paintings of landscapes, churches, gardens, lighthouses, and seascapes. His paintings often featured streams, bridges, and light radiating from a cottage. His website had described him as the most-collected living American artist.

In 2010, Kinkade was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after one of his firms filed for bankruptcy. The FBI was investigating whether he fraudulently induced investors and ruined them financially, the Los Angeles Times reported in 2006. Before Kinkade's group went private, the company made $32 million per quarter from 4,500 dealers, according to the Mercury News .

Kinkade studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Art Center of College of Design, though he dropped out of the schools. His art sold well but received much criticism in the art community. He was named artist of the year by the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers in 1995, and chosen as designated graphic artist of the year for three years. In 1999, he was voted into U.S. Art magazine's hall of fame.

Kinkade is survived by his wife and four children. Many of his works include a Bible reference, a fish (ichthus), his signature, and the letter N in honor of his wife, Nanette. "Paintings are the tools that can inspire the heart to greater faith," Kinkade has said. "My paintings are messengers of God's love. Nature is simply the language which I speak."

Updated (4/12): A new report from The Daily suggests that a Santa Clara County dispatcher described the call as a “54-year-old male, unconscious, not breathing. Apparently he has been drinking all night and not moving … CPR in progress.”

Earlier this week, the San Jose Mercury News reported that Kinkade's wife had filed for legal separation about two years ago. She and the couple's children were in Australia at the time of his death. Kinkade's live-in girlfriend, Amy Pinto, 48, who made the 911 call, told the Mercury News that he “died in his sleep, very happy, in the house he built, with the paintings he loved, and the woman he loved.”

The Los Gatos police told The Daily they had responded to a couple of calls to his house in the past. Results of toxicology and other tests from the autopsy could take up to 20 weeks, according to the report.

The Kinkade Company has not decided how it will reveal his unreleased work, a spokesman told The Daily . Since his death, his paintings have sold for up to $10,000.

Christianity Today articles on the artist include " Gallery of Accusations ," " Darkness Looms for 'Painter of Light ,'" and " The Kinkade Crusade ."

Thomas Kinkade, the popular painter who died in April at age 54, was killed by an accidental overdose of alcohol and Valium, according to the medical examiner of Santa Clara County, Calif.

The autopsy report of the artist, which was released Monday, stated that Kinkade died of “acute ethanol and Diazepam intoxication” and that the death was accidental. Diazepam is an anti-anxiety drug that is found in prescription Valium.

Kinkade died April 6 at his home in Monte Sereno, a community near Los Gatos in the Bay Area.

In the weeks following his death, reports surfaced stating that Kinkade had recently relapsed into alcoholism. The artist, known for his sentimental paintings of cottages and pastoral scenes, was also said to be facing financial problems.

Kinkade was separated from his wife at the time of his death and was reportedly living with his girlfriend. His wife recently filed a restraining order against the girlfriend in an attempt to prevent her from disclosing information on the Kinkade business.

The artist had come under fire in the past for what some claimed to be unfair business practices. In a 2006 Times report , some former gallery owners depicted Kinkade as a ruthless businessman who drove them to financial ruin.

Image Notes

Disney’s classic film  The Little Mermaid  illustrates the story of a free-spirited mermaid princess who longs to be part of the human world. Painted in our signature narrative panorama style, Thomas Kinkade Studios presents this story from the villain’s perspective in  Disney Ursula .

Ursula, the evil sea witch, has struck a very dangerous bargain with Ariel. This deal would allow Ariel to be able to spend time on land with her true love, Prince Eric. Ariel is completely unaware that this accord places her life, and her father’s crown, in jeopardy. Flotsam and Jetsam swim at the ready to assist Ursula to carry out the terms of the contract. But Flounder and Sebastian are determined to help Ariel set everything straight and bring peace, harmony and love back to both the human world and the world under the sea.

Key Points:

  • Disney Ursula  is the third Thomas Kinkade Studios painting that portrays a classic Disney story for the villain's perspective. The first two paintings were  Disney Maleficent  and  Disney The Evil Queen .
  • Ursula is ready to execute her villainous plan, with Flotsam and Jetsam by her side, as Ariel hugs Flounder and Sebastian and "the poor unfortunate souls" look on with worry.
  • Prince Eric and Max are on their boat getting ready to help Ariel and her friends as they face Ursula.
  • Can you spot Glut the shark in the background?

Customers shipping outside of the 48 contiguous United States (i.e. Hawaii, Alaska, International, etc.) please call customer care for a quote before you order.

Shipping Charges

Shipping charges are estimated by calculating the size and weight of box(es). We do our best to consolidate items and pass along our low shipping rates. No matter how we eventually package and ship your order, what we quote on your order will be the amount you pay. If you are purchasing many bulky items at once, please contact our art consultants at (888) 624-5455 to discuss possible bulk freight alternatives.

Where possible we will try to consolidate products into a single shipment. However, due to the often large and awkward sizes of our art pieces we will ship in multiple parcels. You will not be additionally charged for multiple packages unless, unusual special requests are made.

Shipping to Multiple Addresses

If you need to ship to multiple addresses, please create a separate order for each distinct location.
