The Attessa on Lonsdale Quay

Coming back from my failed attempted to ride the Canada Line , I noticed a very big 225 feet long boat docked on Lonsdale Quay. A closer look showed the name Attessa on the side. I was confused by this because I know the Attessa and it wasn’t this big. Turns out that the official name for the yacht was Attessa III and it belongs to Dennis Washington , who used to own Attessa 1 and 2. Most yacht people will know the original Attessa as the yacht used in the movie Indecent Proposal with Robert Redford and Demi Moore (it wasn’t call Attessa in the movie).

Attessa III was built the same way Attessa I and Attessa II were. They started out as used boats with another name that Washington bought and had retrofitted and enlarged. In the case of Attessa III, it started life as the Aviva. The Aviva was damaged in a fire when Washington bought her. He sent the boat to his shipyard in Vancouver for a complete makeover. Aviva was gutted, redesigned, rebuilt and lengthen 20 feet to create Attessa III. The end result is impressive to the say the least. The yacht is stunningly beautiful.

Normally, Attessa carries a helicopter on its top deck but it wasn’t there on the day I saw it. Other features include a couple of tenders, jet skis, a glass-topped breakfast bar and 55’x31′ sundeck. Attessa III is ranked number 64 on the list of world’s largest yachts.

You like it? Well, she might be for sale soon. Washington is currently working on Attessa IV. When that comes out, Attessa III will most likely go on the market. Better start saving those pennies!

This harbor-hopping ride takes you less than 15 minutes along with other freighters, tugs, float planes, and cruises zipping up and down the bustling waters. 

To take the seabus ferry, head to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver and cross the long skywalk.

Cross the Lions Gate Bridge

Some other alternatives to be considered are driving your own car, cycling, and taking a taxi. You’ll be crossing the majestic Lions Gate Bridge if opting for any of these choices.

'Super yacht' with Vancouver connection involved in fatal collision at sea

A luxury superyacht rebuilt several years ago in North Vancouver for the billionaire owner of Washington Marine Group has been involved in a fatal collision at sea near to San Diego.

The collision happened off the west coast on the evening of Oct. 26, about 14 kilometres from San Diego near the United States-Mexico border.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a call from the Attessa IV about 7:45 p.m. advising the 332-foot yacht had collided with a 65-foot sports fishing charter boat, Prowler, and that “Prowler sustained some pretty significant damage to its rear starboard quarter,” said Joel Guzman, public affairs spokesman for the San Diego Coast Guard station.

The Coast Guard launched a Jayhawk helicopter, 45-foot medium response boat and the Coast Guard cutter Sea Otter to the crash site and arrived on scene about 8:45 p.m. where 17 people from the sports fishing charter boat were taken on to the coast guard vessel. Three people were injured, including one man who had critical head injuries, said Guzman.

He was airlifted by helicopter to shore and taken to hospital.

The San Diego medical examiner’s office confirmed 66-year-old Richard Neff of San Clemente later died of those injuries.

Guzman said an investigation is now underway to determine why the ships collided, which includes speaking to everyone on board both vessels at the time of the crash. The investigation could take several months, said Guzman.

There is no word on who was among the 28 people on board the yacht at the time of the collision.

Records of ships’ movements show the Attessa IV left North Vancouver July 8 and travelled down the west coast arriving in San Diego Oct. 15.

The yacht left San Diego following the crash and is now in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Attessa IV, which is registered in the Cayman Islands, is one of the largest privately owned yachts in the world. It was bought in 2007 by Dennis Washington, a U.S. billionaire whose network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.

The mega yacht was extensively rebuilt in a three-year project by Washington Yachting Group in North Vancouver, in the same shed where the three ill-fated Pacificat fast ferries were put together by shipyard workers in the 1990s.

The luxury yacht, which has been featured in a number of yachting and lifestyle magazine articles, features its own on-board helicopter and landing pad, spa, gym and pool, and opulent guest quarters including sculptures by Henry Moore and a hanging glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly.

North Vancouver's Lonsdale Quay to get major overhaul

For the last 35 years, its rotating Q has been an icon of the North Shore. Now, North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Quay Market is set for a major overhaul.

Quay North Urban Development, the company that owns the Quay, is starting renovations, inside and out.

“It’s a pretty cohesive upgrade to the property as a whole. We're looking at it as the revitalization of a community icon,” said Quay North president Taylor Mathiesen. “We know how important that property is to the community and we've got a lot of changes that I think people will be really excited about.”

Outside, the exterior cosmetic steelwork will be removed and replaced with something of a higher design standard (although Mathiesen said it will reflect the industrial and waterfront character of the market).

Inside, the food court will be totally redone and expanded so it blends more with the market’s retail shops. The plans also include a licensed bar and live entertainment space.

The largest individual component is a new two-floor, 10,000-square-foot restaurant space on the waterfront side of the building. Mathiesen can’t publicly say who the new anchor tenant will be yet, but that will be announced in the new year.

The market will be staying open later at night, and management is bringing in arts and culture programming.

“So it won’t just be the gathering place for the community during the day, but it can be that evening destination as well, with a collection of really great and different food offerings and entertainment,” he said.

The rotating Q sign, of course, will be staying.

Plans for the Quay’s upgrades have been in the works for years , Mathiesen said.

The Quay celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2021. When it first opened, it was surrounded by gravel parking lots. Much has changed in Lower Lonsdale since then, Mathiesen noted, but the Quay’s evolution has been much slower.

“Lower Lonsdale has been growing immensely – the Brewery District , the festivals and concerts that are happening here are next level, the Shipyards , the Polygon , MONOVA – we’re really a destination of arts and culture, and events. and food and beverage in a way that we hadn't been before,” he said. “We've been taking some time to plan this revitalization very carefully because we want to get it just right and really meet that standard and that experience that’s being created around us.”

While most of the work will be done by the summer of 2022, the new anchor tenant restaurant will not be open until the summer of 2023.

Construction will be phased so the Quay will remain open, although individual areas will necessarily be closed while work there is done.

Mathiesen said all of the current tenants have been kept abreast of the plans for years, but not all of them will be signing new leases.

“We've always wanted all of the tenants of the market to be a part of this reinvention and to grow with the market, but the reality is, some of them just won't be able to do it for various reasons,” he said.

Entrepreneurs looking to start up shop in the updated Quay can contact management.

None of the changes in the multimillion-dollar project will have to go through City of North Vancouver council, but Mathiesen said they did voluntarily submit their plans to the city’s advisory design panel, which gave very positive feedback.

“Every time we talk about changes to Lonsdale Quay Market, everyone is just so excited. I think it's definitely ripe for an evolution,” he said.

Mathiesen acknowledged North Vancouver residents may feel a lot of ownership in the Quay, it being a hub for the community and often the first place people go after getting off the SeaBus. But, he promised, the changes will be greeted as an improvement when they come.

“We are going to stay true to the market experience that the community knows and loves,” he said. “All of your favourite elements of the market will still be there, they will just be improved upon.”

Historically the waterfront at the south end of Lonsdale Avenue was known as the Lonsdale Quay, which includes a public pier, seawall, docks, farmers market and event space, art galleries, parks, restaurants, local shops, and so much more. Today the Lonsdale Quay goes west to Waterfront Park and East to The Shipyards District and then from the waterfront North to 3rd Street. You can also call the area Lower Lonsdale or Lolo.

Located on the North Shore in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. Directly North of the downtown Vancouver core and east of the Lions gate bridge, on the south end of Lonsdale Ave.

Of course you can drive and park nearby to save on communicating costs by using the Seabus to downtown Vancouver, but it is accessible by Seabus, the Translink bus system which connects all of Greater Vancouver, bicycle, walking, taxi, rideshare or similar.

There is free and paid parking nearby, planning ahead here will help a lot. Using paid parking is of course more secure generally if you are leaving your vehicle over night. But within a few blocks radius of the Lonsdale Quay there is plenty of multi hour and over night street parking that is free and accessible.

Popular North Vancouver market getting an overhaul in final step of Shipyards District redevelopment

The Shipyards District in North Vancouver, B.C., has seen a flurry of redevelopment over the past few years, but one key destination hasn't quite kept up with the changes: the Lonsdale Quay Market.

First opened in 1986, the market is home to more than 60 local businesses, a food hall and a boutique hotel.

"It's a gathering place," says Greg Holmes, executive director of the Lonsdale Business Improvement Association, adding the market is a special place for those who frequent it.

"My office looks over the south plaza and I see the same people in the same chairs every day having their coffees."

But Holmes, along with Quay North Urban Development — which owns and operates the market — admits it's beginning to show its age, especially in comparison to the rest of the district, which includes new high rises, hotels, restaurants and a skating rink.

Now, the Quay is scheduled for a facelift.

"We've got some pretty exciting plans that we've been working on for a few years, actually, to revitalize Lonsdale Quay Market," says Taylor Mathieson, president of Quay North Urban Development.

Floor space will be expanded and the indoor market will be reconfigured to allow for a new food hall with a licensed bar, according to Mathieson.

The exterior of the building will get a cosmetic overhaul, with the red steelwork removed to highlight the warehouse-style building.

A two-storey, 10,000-square foot restaurant is also being built on the south side of the building, overlooking the Burrard Inlet. An anchor restaurant hasn't yet been announced for the space.

An indoor live performance space is also on the docket, while extended opening hours for the market are planned.

Mathieson said the market will still focus on supporting local, owner-operated businesses.

"It's really the experts behind the counter that truly makes Lonsdale Quay so different," he says.

The Quay and its businesses will remain open throughout the renovations, which are set to be complete by next fall.

Lonsdale Quay Market

North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale is now home to the incredible Polygon Gallery , Vancouver’s biggest patio (at Tap & Barrel), and an eclectic range of festivals in The Pipe Shop at the Shipyards, all thanks to Lonsdale Quay Market , which was a once-industrial area that transformed into a bustling attraction.

Starting life as a carnival-style marketplace for the Expo ‘86 World Fair, Lonsdale Quay Market developed into the gateway to the North Shore. It's filled with specialty shops and a serves as a venue for numerous events.

Non-Indigenous settlers came to the North Shore in the 1860s and created an industrial area around what is now the site of the market. In 1907, the City of North Vancouver became independent from Vancouver due to the increased industrial activity around the Lower Lonsdale area.

Things to Do

Lonsdale Quay Market is situated right next to the bus station and SeaBus terminal that connects the North Shore to downtown Vancouver. You’ll find a few eating places and coffee shops just outside the market, but if you walk right from the terminal, you’ll find one of the market entrances. It’s all indoors, so it makes an ideal place to grab lunch on a rainy day while you watch the water.

With more than 80 specialty shops and services, there’s something for everyone at Lonsdale Quay Market and shops. As well as being home to local sellers, you’ll also find an international food court, kids shops and play area, restaurants, Green Leaf Brewery Co , and a boutique hotel (Lonsdale Quay Hotel). Head here on Friday evenings in the summer months (May to September) to experience the Shipyards Night Market. Held close to the Market, the Shipyards summer markets showcase local artisans and food producers (come for the food trucks, stay for the beer garden), accompanied by live music in the plaza.

What to Buy and Eat

The international food court serves up everything from pizza and poke to gourmet burgers, fried chicken, sushi, stir-fry, salads, and soups. Sizzling Wok is a favorite for Chinese food, Thaigo is a popular spot for spicy Thai food, and George’s Souvlaki usually has a a long line.

Grab some groceries from Lonsdale Green Grocer , or pick up pies from El Dorado Pies and Treats (also try a butter tart for a quintessential taste of Canada). If you have time for a relaxing break, stop at Japan Shiatsu for a quick Asian-style massage or get your hair cut at Joy Hair Studio; both can be found inside the Market.

Discover European writing instruments, leather accessories, and Swiss timepieces at Perks, or relax with aromatherapy products from Saje , a local wellness company. Another store worth checking out is  Tulips Children’s Wear for little shoppers. Take home a memento from the Quay Souvenir Centre and try local brews at Green Leaf Brewing—​the North Shore is renowned for its craft beer and here is a great place to start.

Next door to the Market, the Pipe Building often hosts craft markets and local maker fairs—​look out for local distilleries such as  Sons of Vancouver as they can often be found here giving out free samples, and their distilleries are nearby if you want to have a longer visit.

How to Visit

Lonsdale Quay is the terminus station for the SeaBus, which sails every 15 minutes across Burrard Inlet to Waterfront Station, which then connects to the entire SkyTrain transit system. Crossings take 12 minutes and are included in Zone 2 passes for the transit system. Step off the SeaBus, and turn right after the fare gates to reach the Market, or go straight on to catch a bus to Grouse Mountain and beyond.

If you’re driving you can have one hour free parking in the Market parkade (just enter your license number in the machines to get a ticket) or park for free on evenings (from 6 p.m.) and on the weekends in the ICBC parkade, which is adjacent to the Market on Rogers Avenue and Carrie Cates Court.

The Market is open seven days a week with the lower market level being open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and the upper retail level open between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. In summer months the Market is open until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights (the restaurants and brewery stay open later).

The Quay Market and Food Hall

The Lonsdale Quay Market opened its doors in April 1986. The Market is located on the waterfront in North Vancouver, near the Seabus terminal.

With its waterfront location, The Quay offers a stunning view of Vancouver’s skyline both during the day and in the evening. The Quay is also an excellent spot for watching the cruise ships in the harbour during the summer.

TRANSIT OPTIONS

Translink operates Metro Vancouver’s transportation network. To access The Shipyards District, there are a variety of easy ways to get here. The most relaxing and scenic option is to jump on the SeaBus, a 12-minute harbour cruise ferry, from downtown Vancouver’s Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay and Lower Lonsdale. You’ll also find the transit terminal for busses to the area from across the North Shore and Vancouver conveniently located at Lonsdale Quay.

The Spirit Trail is a waterfront-oriented, multi-use and fully accessible greenway that provides pedestrians, cyclists, inline skaters and people with wheeled mobility aids access across the North Shore, from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove. There is also a network of bike lanes in Vancouver that will allow you to ride your bike with ease between the cities. The City of North Vancouver’s portion of the Spirit Trail is 6.5km long. Lonsdale Quay

The Lonsdale Quay area of Lower Lonsdale North Vancouver is within the Shipyards District and is itself a historical area of the community. Originally before the Lions Gate Bridge was built, the Lonsdale Quay hosted a ferry that brought vehicles back and forth from downtown Vancouver to the North Shore. Nowadays the area is the home of ICBC , the Lonsdale Quay Market , Simply Office , and other notable businesses.

With the complete transformation of The Shipyards at the North end of Burrard Dry Dock Pier , the Lonsdale Quay Seabus is seeing a huge amount of foot traffic taking trips back and forth daily. With up to 30,000 people a day coming and going from the area using the Seabus to get to and from work.

The Lonsdale Quay Market is a mecca for culinary experiences and doing local shopping for interesting and artisanal items. As well the Market is also home to the North Vancouver Tourism kiosk and has 3 stories of shopping for your needs as well as plenty of seating for having coffee, tea or eating. There is free underground parking for those people doing shopping in the Market or staying at the Lonsdale Quay Hotel.

Out front of the Lonsdale Quay Market on the South side of the building is a beautiful tile mosaic fountain with abstract art inside of it, and just adjacent to that is the Love Locks area of the waterfront boardwalk where people leave various types of locks attached to the wire mesh to honour their loved ones. This waterfront area is also home to year round events and outdoor music. Right beside here is the office for the Lower Lonsdale Business Improvement Association .

The Lonsdale Quay Market is operated by Quay Properties who are also the developers of the new Shipyards building where the recently opened outdoor public ice skating rink is located. Since opening in December 2019 the skating rink has been used by over 11,000 people which is great news for the local shops and businesses who benefit from the foot traffic.

Recently the University of British Columbia cited the Lonsdale Quay as the cultural and heritage centre of Lower Lonsdale North Vancouver as it has been an active part of the community transportation infrastructure for decades, well before the Market was opened.

Across the street from the Lonsdale Quay on the North side of the building is the new Promenade development with beautiful curved patio condos and retail commercial space that is going to be turned into the new Lower Lonsdale community museum . The Museum and Archives department of North Vancouver is currently building the new indoor facility which is slated to open later in 2020.

The newly opened Polygon Gallery is located to the East of Lonsdale Quay and is the home to amazing artists and events, as well as on the bottom floor Nemesis coffee just opened to compliment the already existing Shipyards Coffee at the base level of the Market.

Year round there is so much to do, see and experience in and around the Lonsdale Quay area of North Vancouver with indoor and outdoor markets , live music and community entertainment such as outdoor cycling in the summer. This area is renowned for having great spaces for taking Instagram photos of the waterfront, downtown Vancouver and always having amazing sunsets with beautiful shades of purple and orange taking over the sky.

The Quay Market and Food Hall and the new Shipyards complex are easy to get to on public transit via the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus Terminus

Located at the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus Terminus in North Vancouver, The Quay Market and Food Hall and the adjacent Shipyards complex are a great place to spend a few hours after an scenic ride across Burrard inlet. The views from the SeaBus make getting there half the fun!

The public marketplace at this major transit hub is home to a wide variety of specialty food retailers and restaurants. There is also a second level dedicated to many small specialty shops featuring unique offerings ranging from toys to designer clothing.

The wharf located at the entrance to the market features a water fountain feature and superb views across Burrard Inlet towards downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park. It is a great place to relax with your favourite refreshment on a nice day.

The new Shipyards complex located immediately east of Londsdale Quay features 20,000 square feet of outdoor people space. Part of the area is protected with a retractable roof, but still open to the outdoors. This brand new development features a waterpark and, in-time for Winter 2020, it will boast the largest outdoor skating rink in Metro Vancouver. There are also many new restaurants and businesses coming to this vibrant new area.
