Richmond Yacht Club hosts Sail a Small Boat Day

Linda Hemmila

Linda Hemmila

Richmond Yacht Club invites you to come and learn to "Sail a Small" boat at their annual fun, family-friendly event, open to everyone, even if you have no previous sailing experience.

Enjoy a fun day on the water on Saturday, November 4th, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and try your hand at sailing a variety of different boats.

"This event welcomes everyone – whether you're a seasoned sailor or a first-timer, a cruiser or a racer, young or young at heart. All ages are invited to sail! Just bring your wetsuit and/or PFD, or we can lend you one. And don't forget to pack a dry change of clothes in case the fun gets a little too wild," RYC said. Kids are welcome, and according to RYC, there's a free hot dog lunch too.

"Hang out on our beautiful balcony or dock, savor your meal, and soak in the views, or take it to go for a delightful harbor cruise. It's all on the house!"

richmond yacht club events

RYC says if you are considering a boat purchase, there will be plenty of boats on hand to check out.

"Discover the boat and fleet that suits you best. Come over to the Club and give it a try. We offer a wide range of options, including Laser, J22, J24, Opti, El Toro, Byte, 29er, Fl8, FJ, Sunfish, Mercury, 420, Wabbit, Snipe, RS Tera, Feva, Aero, and even Catamarans! Our fleet representatives will be there to answer all your questions."

It is suggested you wear warm, water-repellent clothing, and because there's a good chance you may get wet, bringing a change of clothes is advisable, as is leaving your valuables at home.

Saturday's forecast includes a chance of rain, and while sailors generally don't mind getting wet, it's a good idea to make sure the event isn't canceled due to bad weather before heading out.

RICHMOND YACHT CLUB -love the Motto-"THIS CLUB WAS BUILT FOR FUN." What a perfect day! Our friends(Lisa and Brian) invited us to join them on Great Expectations); a Sailing trip to watch The Blue Angels take flight over the Bay Area! Literally enjoyed the: blue skies, the company of sailing boats on the water, delicious hors d'oeuvres, and excellent company! Captain Brian-kept us moving along with comfort. We spent the day-Looking Up in the sky at the stunning planes especially --- the U.S. Navy Blue Angels! Loved the experience and welcoming vibe of this club. This beautiful Yacht club is located in Brickyard Cove. RYC 's location and facilities make it a premier venue for a great variety of yachting activities. The club's location offers almost immediate access to the Bay and is ideal for both racing and pleasure sailing in boats large and small. Everyone we met was over the top friendly and welcoming-but I also think Lisa and Brian know everyone. Ha!!! Great day and company!!

Awesome place to check out boats to go sailing! It's a bit of a distance from the south bay or SF even but totally worth it because if you're a member they have tons of boats to check out. The members club house is also fully stocked with snacks, just donate whatever money you can. The bathrooms are clean and there's also coin operated washers and dryers for use if you plan to stay overnight. I'm impressed! The staff are also really friendly and always willing to help educate you on the high seas.

When we moved to California in 1995 and brought our sailboat with us, we didn't quite know the best place to sail, but we soon figured it out due to some encouragement from other sailors of the same type of boat. The yacht club motto is "This club is built for fun" rings true. We were never pressured to join, but really liked everyone we met and they were so friendly, it seemed natural to join. We have never looked back on that decision, even though it takes us an hour to get there on the weekend (weeknight visits are pretty much impossible because of the traffic coming from where we live). It's also known as the "Richmond Riviera" because the club is shielded from the wind at the Golden Gate by Angel Island and when San Francisco is covered in fog, it's likely we are not. There are lots of volunteers to help with everything the club does. The regattas are fun and well run, the non-regattas parties are also fun, and the Jr. Sailing program is great, especially since we have a child in the program and could choose a closer venue to home, but don't. There are now opportunities to learn how to sail with a sailing instructor and it's always fun for the kids to go to sail camp at Stockton in the summer. The club building has grown larger since we joined, especially adding a 2nd ladies room for regattas (girls sail too) was a great idea. Dinners are on Friday & Sundays with different dinner specials (pretty darn good deal) or a grill on your own. Sometimes there are dinners on Saturdays when Richmond is hosting a regatta. Dinghy boat launching was made nicer with the upgrade to the docks a few years ago. There are also 2 launching hoists for larger boats. There is dry boat storage, lockers, & berths (not sure what the waitlist would be like). I have to say that some of my best friends here were met at the yacht club.

RYC is a very active club with great racing programs and junior sailing program. The club is located in Point Richmond so getting there is a bit of a trek. Point Richmond is such an anomoly of a quaint little town with expensive water front homes nested in the midst of Richmond refinery industrial region. The club house is a two story wood building that serves as a gathering place for club events. Richmond YC puts on some awesome parties and the members are always friendly. Food: It's good, but uneven depending who's doing the cooking. The characters at the club makes the dining experience.

What a great spot for a regatta. It is away from the city and for dinghy sailing it is in a nice shoal so u won't see lots of boat traffic. The club house is nice and the winds is nice and steady in the spring but not overpowering. Most important there r lots of dining options nearby from sandwiches to hamburgers. And u always get an incredible view if the bay bridge. The City and the golden gate not to mention angel island and the Richmond bridge :-)

In April I purchased a donated boat from the RYC and have had great trouble getting them to sign and transfer the title to me. In fact the issue is still going on despite me working with the DMV and AAA multiple times and using their instructions. In short, RYC will not follow the legal course of transfer of title dictated by the laws of CA and therefore causing penalty fee's that I have no option but to pay. I think it's worth knowing that my RYC contacts also work at the RYC Sailing School and I'd question their integrity. While I often question the legitimacy or need of extremely negative reviews on Yelp, in this case, I have been following the law by the letter, taking the guidance of the DMV, AAA and previous owner, while paying late fee's all the while seemingly not being taken serious by members of the RYC.

http://rycjuniorprogram.wordpress.com/ Click on the Junior Program site and see for yourself. The pictures show what the organization is all about. Some 60 juniors participate each year having a blast. The little ones don't even realize they are being highly educated as they learn to master their own craft. RYC is located in the ideal place with protected harbor sailing for the beginners, outer harbor sailing but still inside a breakwall as they grow their expertise, and then the open bay. After taking lessons at several different clubs around the bay area we found the RYC. My boy started sailing here as a beginner/intermediate 7 years ago when he was 12 in El Toros and has since moved throught all the different fleets and levels right on through high school. Fleets include the famous El Toro Dinghy designed right here at the RYC in 1936, the Optimist Dinghy, the CFJ and 420 two handed boats, and the Laser and Laser Radial. Recently the 29er skiff has also multiplied into a favorite. RYC caters to the juniors with support and education from the very beginning with a strong emphasis on safety. The programs are instructed by highy skilled volunteer yachters as well as professionals. My son has become a coach and instuctor and a true lover of sailing through the RYC and this is what he has to say. "It is a huge privilege for me to sail under the RYC Burgee, I look forward to many years here."

Nice place to dock your boat(s). The people are nice, they have a good juniors instructor for Laser sailing. The regattas and races are big fun. My personal fav was the Big Dinghy. (we won it in our class a few years back) The people are really fun. Its all around a pretty fun place to be and that's before your day of boating begins. Bar is friendly, food is pretty ok. Not like mom used to make (thank gods!). Its a great place to sail a boat out of.

This is a great place for your kid to learn to sail. The club offers lessons in all kinds of boats, with really great instructors, at an amazing price. My daughter was pretty nervous to try sailing, but she was quickly won over by the the warm weather (Point Richmond) and the excellent teaching staff which includes both professional teachers and volunteers. The club is especially great with beginner and high-school sailors.
