“Day after”: The ugly Damage on the RM1350 saved last week

rm 1350 yacht review

The French crew left the yacht for a 3 day land break on Saba, after 6 months of sailing. Unfortunately, because of the adverse weather conditions, the mooring line got caught under the bilge-keel and rudder, chafing through it by the constant wave action.

We received yesterday the “day after” pictures (thanks to Yacht Synergy ). Really a bad show…

RM 1350 Year 2010

The RM 1350 developped by Fora Marine in epoxy plywood and designed by Marc Lombard is an unrivalled cruiser: everything has been built to run the milles and cross the oceans. Being able to stand on her two keels, the boat keeps remarkable performance while sailing thanks to her advantageous ballast weight/total weight rate and her planning hard-chine hull. Large cockpit, clear deck layout, and especially a formidable deck saloon with a 360° view. transmitting leasing possible. NEW PRICE !

Owner's words

After having had several smaller sailboats before, this RM should have meant the faraway escape and we did not hesitate with any other boat. Cruising mainly in Brittany, the twin keel version has shown its high efficacity. on the side of sailing, she is a real pleasure, and we stopped counting all the boats we cut off! we decided to sell her because we finally use her close to the shore mainly.

RM 1350 is a 44 ′ 11 ″ / 13.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Marc Lombard and built by RM Yachts starting in 2008.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

RM1370

Here is the new RM 1370: all the oceans converge in her destiny

Minimal Logo

Last year, RM Fora Marine joined the Paris Boat Show to unveil the concept and the first pictures of the RM 1370 , the successor of the 1360. Some changes in the exterior design immediately sounded evident, including, first of all, the inverse stempost .

Rm1370 at Paris Boat Show

Designed by Marc Lombard , the boat replicates the same powerful waterlines of the “old” (she is actually just 3 years old) 1360 and gives further evidence of the excellent engineering and building capabilities of RM Fora Marine. Some years ago, we visited the production facility of Rm Fora Marine in La Rochelle and we had the opportunity to see and appreciate the quality of the  construction process of the RM yachts.

RM 1370 appendages

Thanks to a resin-and-steel structural grid applied in its central section, the hull is sturdy and highly resistant, reinforced by a series of chain plates. The boat represents a significant step forward in terms of both exterior and interior design.

The main innovation is, of course, expressed by the bow, whose profile is slightly rear-facing. From a technical point of view, this results into a greater waterline length , especially when the boat sails listed. From an aesthetical point of view, the overall effect is pleasant and the bowsprit integrates harmoniously into the rest of the boat making the forward section exquisitely elegant.

Compared with her predecessor, the RM 1370 features longer windows, which results into a greater amount of natural light flloding the interiors. More specifically, the long windows envelop the lateral sections of the deckhouse , whose layout has remained unchanged, defining a curved line which slopes gently down to the mast.

RM 1370 dinette

Designer Marc Lombard has decided to provide the RM 1370 with an “ocean” cockpit . The maximum beam of the boat – 4,50 meters – indeed coincides with this area. This huge space enables crew members to move free while provide guests with a welcoming  relaxation area. Following the typical standards of large ocean yachts and replicating the layout the 1360, the cockpit is totally open in its aft section.

Located in the cockpit, riggings include six winches – two positioned next to the wheels, two located in the deckhouse and two a little stepped backwards, between the cockpit settees and the deckhouse.

RM 1370 chart table

The boat is offered in various keel options . The French-oriented version features double keel and a single rudder blade while the Mediterranean one has a single keel and two rudder blades. The boat can also be equipped with a 3.40-meter-deep fin or a retractable keel.

As already mentioned above, natural light is one of the main hallmarks of these spacious interiors which accommodate two double guest cabins in the stern and an owner cabin , with en-suite bathroom and separate shower box, at the bow.

rm 1370

Noteworthy is the large U-shaped galley , separate from the rest of the dinette which consists of two counterposed sofas and a large dinner table with pop-up wings. An additional bathroom is positioned opposite the galley. Finally, a large chart table on the left bulwark expresses the genuine soul of a boat which was custom designed for long, ocean crossings.

RM970 on test – award-winning plywood family cruiser from Marc Lombard

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 7, 2017

RM has continuously improved its boats and the new 970 is a spacious and highly versatile yacht.

rm 1350 yacht review

When I visited the RM yard in La Rochelle in 2012, I was really impressed by the quality of the company’s plywood epoxy construction process. Not only is plywood more sustainable than composite or metal, it is also a stiff, light and naturally insulating material.

RM’s yachts were still a little quirky, however, and needed to dazzle a little more on the water. Since then RM has moved into a larger yard and put an energetic young team in place, which has given the new line added spark.

RM won the European Yacht of the Year family cruiser category in 2013, was nominated in 2015 with its 890 and won again this year. Other nominees in the 2016/17 European Yacht of the Year awards : Django 12.70, Ikone 7.50, Jeanneau 51, Sunbeam 22.1.

This 970 perfectly demonstrates why designer Marc Lombard is so crafty in this size range. Modern lines, including reverse sheerline and voluminous forward sections, help create a spacious and highly versatile yacht that’s fun to sail.

Wheel or tiller steering can be specified; fixed or twin keels are offered too. RM has collaborated with specialists INO Rope on the deck layout: the purchase systems make light work of sail handling; the 3D genoa on an inhauler/barber system is a particularly neat set-up.

The 970 is great fun on the helm, really sporty, especially with the kite hoisted. There is direct communication to the twin rudders, which have real traction, allowing you to boss her around sharply.

Those accustomed to single rudders may still miss the feedback however, as the helm is neutral. We sailed in 15 to 18 knots with full sail, averaging 8.5 to 9 knots under gennaker.

At just over 9 knots she starts to plane, which is a blast and about the right balance of sportiness and control that you want out of a family cruiser. Upwind figures hovered around 7 knots but at a relatively low angle, even under staysail.

Seascape 24 – a pocket family sports cruiser that fits in an exciting and popular sailing niche

RM sites the primary winches inboard, which is a superbly practical solution and the cutter rig option works well for cruising. I enjoyed steering from the aft quarters, but at this size, when a boat is fitted with wheels rather than tillers, the helmsman is squashed against the backstay.

Down below is the sort of  simple, bright and colourful modern interior that RM is known for. The saloon receives the majority of the space and light, thanks also to the open vee berth forward, and it adjoins a galley and a proper little navstation.

The two-cabin layout has a large heads aft that includes some wet hanging space and access to a utility/storage area.

Toby’s conclusion

This is the most impressive RM yet and shows the plywood specialists setting the bar for midsize cruisers. The 970 packs it all in – exciting performance in a fun, voluminous, versatile and refreshingly modern family-friendly cruiser. However, like past RMs it is comparatively expensive. I like the deck design, notably the running rigging and winch layout, and she’s a joy to drive – sporty yet authoritative, the ideal balance for a fast family cruiser.

RM Yachts: French plywood sailboat manufacturer

Over 30 years of plywood yacht building expertise.

Welcome to RM Yachts!

French sailboat manufacturer since 1989, our shipyard based in La Rochelle is specialised in the construction of fast cruising yachts of 30ft to 45ft in plywood and epoxy – approximately 9 to 14 meters.

Whether you are looking for a coastal cruising sailboat, or planning longer open sea trips, such as Atlantic, Pacific crossing, or round-the-world sailing, there will always be an RM yacht fitting your project.

We are actually the sole shipyard and manufacturer having built over 500 monohull sailboats using this material and this sailing yacht building technique. Needless to say, we know plywood-epoxy in-and-out.

This material’s benefits are numerous: lightness and stiffness, for increased performance under sail, and a dry and sane interior atmosphere, thanks to its thermal and phonic specifications.

Not to mention its reduced impact on the environment, compared to other materials usually found in naval construction (GRP, polyester, etc.).

Designed by award-winning architect Marc Lombard, RM yachts are 100% made in France, and then sail around the world. Our clients frequently share their anecdotes and logbooks from their solo or family adventures on our modern sailing boats.

Available in different appendage versions (single-keel, twin-keel, lifting-keel, single or twin rudder), RM Yachts are customisable, starting with their hull colour and interior design.

Advising you to choose the best cruising sailboat

Thanks to our many years of experience as a sailing yacht manufacturer, we have designed our website to provide you with all the information you need to select your next cruising yacht :

You are more than welcome to visit our premises, and we can also set up a sea trial! Our team will be more than happy to help you configure your brand-new sailing yacht

Alternatively, you can also have a look at our previous models and see how high our used monohull sailboats are on the market. Our expert brokers remain available for additional information.

Finally, acquiring an RM also means you have access to a panel of services, provided by Grand Large Yachting group’s dedicated subsidiary: Grand Large Services. Whether it’s about training lessons, spare parts, maintenance, or refit before slipping lines, our specialists are here to help!

Ferretti 460, beneteau oceanis 393 clipper, b2 marine djinn 7, the review of our community on rm yachts, why trust us , already 40 boats sold through us, all about rm yachts brand.

RM yachts for colourful boats! Their angular, streamlined silhouette is usually adorned with bright colours to real effect, but their "pretty face" is far from being their only asset! They're safe, fast and comfortable. Also their base material, being wood, makes them some of the most recyclable boats around! While the first RM 800 and 900 were released in 1989, the RM 1070 designed by Marc Lomà came out in 1995, followed by the RM 1180 more recently. Historically based in La Rochelle, the shipyard that builds RM Yachts boats is located near the Port des Minimes, in Périgny. Recently it has been the scene of several takeovers. The brand and the shipyard now belong to the Grand Large group, alongside great names such as Allures yachting, Outremer, Garcia yachts and Gunboat. RM yachts are special because they feature a double or triple chine hull which makes them particularly seaworthy, rigid and fast. Their composite construction uses epoxy plywood, polyester and now an epoxy sandwich design. Their long roofs offer a 180° view and the interiors with their appealing pearl grey finish are as clear and uncluttered as they are attractive, so much so that an RM has been elected sailboat of the year 5 times! RM yachts are as unusual as they are exciting, being aimed at both travellers and fast cruising enthusiasts.
