260 Bay Boat

Tournament bass fishermen and offshore anglers have long realized speed gets them to fish faster, which allows them to fish longer at a given spot or farther from the dock where fewer boats fish. The same is true of flats boats and bay boats, but, inshore fishermen can’t simply hang more learn more horsepower on the stern if they expect to fish in shallow water, until now. The Velocity 260 Bay is for the serious angler who wants speed, shoal draft, comfort, and choppy-water performance. Performance boats do one thing well -- go fast. To appeal to those buyers, performance boats are built to be particularly comfortable while driving at high speed. Velocity carries that long heritage and philosophy into the 260 Bay using its famous VR1 race hull that has set numerous kilo speed records. Velocity’s 260 Bay also combines flats-fishing features and a more comfortable helm and seating than typical inshore fishing boats. Velocity’s one of a kind ”Comfort Helm” features two adjacent seats with wrap-around backrests and lumbar support. Both the seat bottoms and seat backs are angled for comfort while seated. Velocity Powerboats Under New Ownership

Legendary offshore performance boat manufacturer Velocity Powerboats has been purchased by two Tampa-based businessmen, Brad Resch and Scott Tubbs. Resch is the president and CEO while Tubbs is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The transaction was finalized July 31. Velocity founder and former president Steve Stepp will remain with the company full-time for six months and then part time for 1 ½ years. The company’s popular sales manager Kenny Hohwiesner will also remain with Velocity.

“We’ve got a real love and passion for boating and we’re going to take that experience and passion and creativity for boats,” said Resch. “I think I’ve got some neat ideas and contributions along with Steve’s ideas.”

Stepp will continue to develop new models. The company will build performance models on order, but is focusing on more versatile models after the popularity of the 26’ bay boat called the VR-26. Next up is a 20’ Bay Boat, followed by a center console ocean going version of the 26’ model and eventually a 40’ center console. There are no plans for Velocity to build a stepped hull.

“It seemed like a great opportunity to get into the business and take the world record hulls that Steve has and grow and expand upon the business,” said Resch.

The company will remain in Sanford, Fla., but will move to the old Cobia Boats facility, which is a 20,000 square-foot factory with the taller doors that can more easily accommodate boats with T-tops.

THE HISTORY OF GO-FAST BOATS

Resch’s business background comes from his family’s successful roofing supply business in Tampa. Tubbs has background in sales and management and has held executive positions with companies including Sally Mae.

On the boating side, Resch and Tubbs were both performance boaters. Tubbs had a Cigarette 38 Top Gun and Resch owned a Baja 30 Outlaw. They spent many weekends hanging out and boating in the Tampa area. “We’ve been avid boaters our whole lives,” said Resch.

From Stepp’s perspective, he appreciates that someone with Resch’s enthusiasm and resources has taken the helm at Velocity. “It’ll be exciting because it seems like Brad has the money to do it and he’s excited about doing it,” said Stepp.

Catching Up With Scott McCormick Of Velocity Powerboats—Off To The Races

A self-described former “shop rat” who washed boats and swept floors at Velocity Powerboats during the early 1990s, 53-year-old Scott McCormick purchased the Florida company, which moved from DeLand to Sanford in the mid-1990s, in 2018. Along the way, he worked in lamination and rigging and sales and marketing, and eventually became general manager of the well-known V-bottom builder. With an eye toward expansion, McCormick moved Velocity to a larger facility in Sanford and he’s been running flat out ever since.

Velocity offers outboard engine-powered V-bottoms up to 43 feet long.

Though McCormick has approximately 20 employees, he remains a one-man band in the management, sales and new-model-development—all of which means he doesn’t have much “spare time.” Still, I managed to pin him down for a quick interview Friday.

A look at some of the recent Velocity models and builds.

The go-fast powerboat segment has, for the most part, gone to outboard power. How has that affected Velocity?

It’s been positive for us. The outboard craze has allowed Velocity to expand into new models with larger cockpits and greater durability. The boats are a huge hit for us because most companies have moved to center consoles. And we are one of the few that still produce outboard-powered V-bottom sportboats.

McCormick recently ran this new build to more than 90 mph.

What model is your current best seller—and what makes it so popular?

Velocity’s best-seller is the 290SC sport boat. With the outboard application the cockpit is two feet larger, has an enclosed head, a galley and air conditioning, and will run over 100 mph with Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines. It delivers a complete high-performance package yet has all the creature comforts of a family dayboat.

What new models can buyers expect from Velocity in the near and long-term future?

Currently, Velocity has two new models coming into the lineup. We have finished the tooling and molds for the New 330CC and are 50 percent finished with the new 42 Widebody. The 330CC will be 9 feet 6 inches wide, have a Euro-style hardtop, double row helms and offer a side door. The 330CC is the first boat designed on CAD and cut with a five-axis router. I have changed the entire bottom of this boat and the performance numbers will show huge gains in speed and handling. This will be a 100-mph boat with triple 400Rs.

Carbon-fiber builds are in the Velocity repertoire.

Have you been working toward greater manufacturing efficiencies at Velocity, and if so what tangible manufacturing changes has that amounted to?

Velocity has implemented modern manufacturing efficiencies that are helping our team build the best quality boats around. We constantly hear our boats have amazing fit and finish as well as updated styling. We have CNC routers in house that cut all stringers and bulkheads, as well as upholstery panels and seat parts. We have moved into DNV lamination standards that are certified. We only use American-made fiberglass and carbon knits. All hulls, deck and parts are 100-percent infused for a lighter, stronger boat.

For McCormick and company, supporting the Toys Tour is a privilege.

Velocity’s backing and organization of the Toys Tour is largely responsible for keeping it going. That must be a lot of work for you. Why bother?

The Toys Tour event started in 2000 and had a total of six Velocity boats in the fleet. It was just something we thought would be fun, and the Toys for Tots organization was on board. The late Rus Matos continued to make the event bigger and bigger each year, and he named the event The Toys Tour. Once I purchased Velocity Powerboats, I told “Raceboat Rus” that I wanted to help make it even bigger so we became the event’s title sponsor. Before Rus passed in 2019, I promised him I would keep the Toys Tour going. Now it has grown to attract 300 to 500 people and 100 to 160 boats each year.

McCormick is as hands-on as boat company owners get.

What are the biggest challenges currently facing the high-performance marine industry?

The high-performance industry is alive and well with sales holding steady. But in the past few years, supply chain issues created crazy lead times that affected most boat builders. Currently, vendors are caught up and have been delivering components on time. I believe some customers may be affected by the rapid rise in gas prices and interest rates, but we believe that will subside in the next 12 months. And the industry will be off to the races again.

Our family purchased the new custom 32 Carerra center console from Al at Carerra power boats at the factory.. I have to say the attention to detail is one of a kind and really hard to find. Both Al and his shop manager Anthony are one of a kind. They sat down with us and added some great options for us that we needed and the job was completed very fast even during this pandemic were in now. The boat is a one off custom build that Al and Anthony really put their hearts into. Every time I call them , no matter the day or time to walk me through all the options on the boat they answer and help me out no questions asked. This is definitely not the Carerra I remember. I had the older version from the previous owners and let me tell you, these guys really stepped it up. These guys are also doing full service on all boats at their shop and if you need service done make sure to give them a shout, because like I said the attention to detail is one of a kind and you won’t be disappointed. I was looking around for weeks to get some fiberglass and gel coat repairs on my boat. Every single person either didn’t show to the estimate or would never show for the job. I called Carrera powerboats which was recommended by my Mechanic K&J. From the moment I called, the level of professionalism was completely different. They came the following day to give me the estimate, explained thoroughly what they were going to do and gave me a timeline of when it would be done. Anthony at Carrera, the day before called me to confirm and she was off to getting fixed. Anthony kept me updated, sent me pictures and stuck to his word and time line. I thought the marine industry didn’t have people like the ones at Carrera boats that were professional, punctual and actually do the work. I had several dings and repairs needed and it was flawless work. You could not tell the difference of what was repaired and what was original. Spend the extra money and have professionals do the job. Great crew of guys, I was there purchasing my Carrera flat cat boat witch I was highly impressed with it, and there Service manager was so patient on spending 2 hrs with me to run thru the boat and showing me all the function the boat had. Recently had my 1996 22ft classic Mako worked on by the team at Carrera. The workmanship that was completed by team is impressive, I could not be any happier with the finished product. Anthony provides updates frequently and is extremely professional. The staff that worked on the boat treated it like if was their own. I shopped around and had various shops mention they can redo my transom, fix a crack on my keel and refit my console only to be placed on a wait list, then never communicate to again, avoid calls or ever start the work. Carrera was more than willing and made the process effortless including have the boat picked up and delivered.

I have to say these guys take care of business! Very reliable! I trust them here whole heartedly which is hard to come by. These guys do full service on all boats at their shop, if you need any service done make sure to give them a call! The attention to detail is right on point and you won’t be disappointed.

Clinton Twp. explosions shot debris 2 miles away, felt like 'war zone,' officials say

Clinton Township — A fire and series of thunderous explosions at a Clinton Township vape supply facility shot debris as far as two miles away from the facility on 15 Mile on Monday night and a man was killed, township officials said Tuesday.

Police and fire fighters are investigating the cause of the explosions at the facility, identified both as Select Distributors and Goo Smoke Shop. The debris included canisters weighing 10 to 15 pounds, which careened from the site with such force that they embedded into buildings and cars.

The canisters were not there legally, township Supervisor Robert Cannon said at an afternoon press conference. Township officials did not know the canisters were on site or how they were used. Police Chief Dina Caringi said officers are questioning the owners and employees of the smoke shop and distribution facility.

Cannon warned people to stay away from the explosion scene at 15 Mile and Groesbeck Highway, and away from the debris still littering the corridor.

"Please don’t put yourself, your family and your friends in jeopardy, because those are dangerous," the supervisor said. "Anybody who saw anything at all from last night knows what could possibly happen to them."

A 19-year-old man was killed and a firefighter was injured by the nighttime blast. The teen was less than half a mile from the scene, Caringi said. The police department has not yet identified him publicly.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital and later released with minor injuries.

Witnessing the explosion felt like being in a war zone, township Fire Department Chief Tim Duncan said, with "shrapnel going off anywhere you look."

The smell of plastic hung in the air near the site Tuesday. Township officials said it is safe to breathe.

The Clinton Township Fire Department will start its investigation Wednesday when the scene has cooled, Duncan said. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is helping with the investigation.

What inspections previously found

The fire department inspected the facility in May 2022 and did not find any notable issues.

Barry Miller, Clinton Township building department superintendent, said his team performed inspections in 2022 alongside the fire department. The city has since had only a complaint on the property involving the storage of duck boats in front of the business, which were removed, he said.

"Other than that, there’s been no reason for the building department or the fire department to suspect that any of this was going on," he said.

The address where the explosions occurred is connected to two firms, Select Distributors and Goo LLC, according to state incorporation records. A man who answered at the home of Noor Kestou, the registered agent for Select Distributors and Goo LLC, said Tuesday he had no comment.

The Goo Smoke Shop building is a former Save-A-Lot retail and warehouse facility, Clinton Township officials said Tuesday. The facility stored containers of butane, nitrous oxide, lighter fluid and vape pens. Some containers or canisters were 12 to 18 inches in size and weighed 10 to 15 pounds.

On its website, Select Distributors bills itself as a wholesale supplier of novelty items for dollar stores, supermarkets, convenience stores and other retail outlets. It offers everyday products such as phone cords, candy and antifreeze. It also sells items for smoke shops, including cans of nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas”; cannabis products such as CBD gummies; disposable marijuana vape pens; vaporizer batteries; capsules of kratom; and canisters of butane.

Greg Conley, director of legislative and external affairs for the American Vapor Manufacturers industry group, said some of the materials stored in the facility, namely butane, likely had to do with manufacturing marijuana products.

Expert discusses combustibility

Butane can be used to extract THC from cannabis. The final product is an oil that has the consistency of honey or wax, that can be used in vaporizers.

“Nicotine vaping products are water-based, so there is no oil, there’s no extraction process. You can buy the nicotine that’s already been extracted from the tobacco leaf in professional labs, so you don’t have people trying to do science in their backyard,” Conley said. “And meanwhile with THC vaping products, they’re oil-based and require somebody to extract the THC from the actual marijuana. And that involves chemicals and, in some cases, can involve chemicals that can cause fires.”

The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency did not immediately respond to a request for information about Select Distributors LLC. Clinton Township Emergency Management Coordinator Paul Brouwer said there are no marijuana dispensaries in the township.

Vapes, like cellphones and other electronics, contain lithium-ion batteries. Those batteries can overheat and explode. Conley said it’s unlikely a fire would start because of vape batteries, but said a fire in the facility could set off a chain reaction of battery explosions.

“You have a lot of lithium-ion batteries in one place," in a warehouse facility, Conley said. "If there is a fire, you have the possibility of multiple lithium-ion batteries being set on fire.”

Select Distributors also sold small butane canisters for lighter refills, according to its website.

Select Distributors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2021, federal court records show. Another business represented by Kestou, SD Imports, also filed for bankruptcy in July 2021. The bankruptcy estate was administered and the case was closed in February 2022.

The bankruptcies led to the dismissal of a lawsuit that Kestou and Select Distributors had filed against against another Michigan company, Breeze Smoke LLC, in 2020 following a dispute over Select Distributors’ use of the word “breeze” on disposable vaping devices. Breeze Smoke contended the use of “breeze” violated its trademark, which Select Distributors disputed.

U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Michigan Judge Judith Levy granted a dismissal of that case in 2021, citing the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.

Explosions 'shook the floor'

Diane Warren of Clinton Township said Tuesday she was watching TV around 9 p.m. Monday when she started hearing small booms, like firecrackers. Then, they got louder.

“And it shook the floor in the house, knocked a lantern down in the bathroom, and we could see the flames really high in red and orange, and … it felt like an earthquake,” she recalled. Warren said it was too close for comfort.

“It was scary because you’d think that it was going to come to your house, you know hit the roof and stuff,” she said.

Warren said she and her husband, Jim, lost electricity around 1 a.m. or 2 a.m., but just for a short time.

Warren lives less than half a mile from the site. She said people who live nearby came to her street to see what was going on. It was like a traffic jam, she said.

Warren praised the firefighters who responded to the blasts.

“I thank God for our fire guys,” she said. “We complain about our taxes, but I tell you what … we have our workers. Thank God for them.”

Margarita Derraj, the owner of Michael’s Kitchen on Groesbeck Highway, about a half mile from where the fire and explosions occurred, said she and her employees were getting ready to close the restaurant for the night when they started to hear noises.

She thought someone was on the roof, so she opened the back door and thought she saw a thunderstorm. Her colleague said a factory was exploding.

It was terrifying, Derraj said. There was a black cloud in the air. The explosions sounded like fireworks. After she left work, she could still hear the explosion from her home three miles away.

Kevin Felster of Emmett near Port Huron said he was on his way to Clinton Township to visit Joleen Vultaggio in Sterling Heights when he saw the fire and heard the explosions.

After he got out of his car to watch, he saw hundreds of pieces of metal littering nearby roads, pieces from the size of a spray can to the size of a car wheel.

"It was heavy stuff and it was all charred black," Felster said of a piece of debris he picked up. "I guarantee you … if that came flying through the air at any velocity at all, it would just shatter your head like nothing."

Vultaggio said she heard the explosions from eight miles away at her home.

"It just freaked me out," she said, "because it wasn't like one boom, it was continuous and it was very intense."
