Hallberg-Rassy 340 review: 2017 model put to the test

When the wind shifts you have two options: follow it, or tack. In 2017, Hallberg-Rassy tacked and launched the Hallberg-Rassy 340. Has the change of course paid off?

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

At first glance the Hallberg-Rassy 340 is not a Hallberg-Rassy as we know it. Twin rudders, a deep fin and bulb keel, square ends and a bowsprit give her a sharp, contemporary look. She promises sporty performance, but not necessarily the gentle character of an offshore cruising boat.

Shortly after departing Copenhagen though, I was reassured. We were close hauled under full sail making steady progress down the Oresund when a 30-knot squall hit. With a narrow channel and shipping around, there was nowhere to go. We needed to reef, and avoid being set to leeward on a sandbank.

Some modern boats would have rounded up uncontrollably, made huge amounts of leeway and drifted out of the channel. Aria Legra feathered the wind at about 25-30° apparent, making 3 knots in the right direction as we scrambled to throw a reef in.  It wasn’t pleasant, but she dug in just when we needed her to. ‘Phew,’ I thought, followed shortly by ‘phwoar’ – that was quite impressive.

Following on from the Hallberg-Rassy 44, the Hallberg-Rassy 340 was the second Rassy to have twin rudders, a bowsprit and almost full-length waterline. The beam is carried most of the way aft, maximising interior volume. From the outside, the emphasis on performance is striking, and a 38% ballast ratio, fractional rig and 48:1 adjustable backstay give credence to the claim.

Look beyond the bold bow and twin rudders though and there’s a careful balance of old and new in evidence. The rubbing strake, generous teak coaming and touch of sheer keep a line of continuity with her predecessors. She’s also heavier than many of her direct competitors, with a slightly deeper forefoot.

The design may be new but Hallberg-Rassy construction techniques are tried and tested. The hull and deck are Divinycell cored, giving stiffness, sound and thermal insulation without the pitfalls of balsa. There’s a structural grid laminated into the bottom of the hull, a substantial ring frame to distribute the mast load and a solid stainless steel rudder shaft.

The level of craftsmanship is immediately obvious: the decks are perfectly flush, and there’s a generous toerail and a nice teak grabrail on the high coachroof to give confidence going forwards. The split shroud base gives almost unimpeded passage along the sidedecks. Like all the best inventions, it solves a problem that hadn’t been noticed until it disappeared.

Bowsprit anxiety

Integral scupper drains keep the topsides clean and classy. The chunky stainless midships cleats would look at home on a 50ft yacht. Performance yes; stripped out racer: no.

The bowsprit itself serves several functions. Primarily for setting a code zero or gennaker, it also houses the anchor, keeping it clear of the topsides and provides a platform for bows-to moorings. Although it’s a great addition when sailing, sprit anxiety can make manoeuvring somewhat more stressful. The 372 has a retractable sprit, which is a bit more versatile.

The split pulpit is a necessary feature of the foredeck arrangement and makes it much easier to set a sail beyond the forestay, but it does leave you feeling exposed when working on the foredeck in a seaway.

The coachroof is relatively high and rounded which allows for plenty of headroom below, but from some angles it is a little bulky and somewhat out of keeping with her sharp lines. There’s quite a camber to the top which I was sceptical about at first, but the non-slip coating is excellent. It falls off steeply just forward of the mast to give a huge flush working area on the foredeck, a luxury which can only be truly appreciated when grappling with a gennaker which has gone wrong (don’t ask!).

It’s big enough that we sailed along quite happily with a 2.4m dinghy lashed on top. The under-deck furler and windlass positioned inside the chain locker keep the area clutter free. The chain locker itself is deep and spacious, with room for a few fenders and plenty of chain.

Tight package

The cockpit of the Hallberg-Rassy 340 is large for a 34ft yacht, extending all the way aft to the transom. At the companionway end it’s just narrow enough for a 5ft 6in shorty to brace her legs across, but further back it becomes quite a stretch.

Originally designed for a tiller, the twin wheel option is far more popular. She’s a small boat for twin wheels and, as elegant as the 48:1 backstay purchase system is, it sits right between them impeding movement especially when fully kitted.

The helm position itself lacks foot blocks, and becomes uncomfortable when heeled for long periods. The seated helm position is crammed into a corner with no proper legroom unless you perch on the rather narrow coaming.

After about half an hour we tended to resort to the autopilot which is a shame on a boat which is so much fun to helm. If it were me I’d seriously consider the tiller option.

The Hallberg-Rassy 340’s transom is enclosed by the bathing platform, but like most boats with this configuration this makes it impossible to have a proper pushpit. Standing so far aft on the wheel with little between you and the almighty blue felt precarious on occasion.

The 48.1 adjustable backstay can become an obstacle when fully kitted. Photo: Chris Francis

On the plus side, all the controls are located near the helm, including engine start panel, furler, mainsheet and a switchboard with essentials like nav lights.

The Hallberg-Rassy 340 was a dream on solo watches, the only thing missing was a coffee machine. Most lines are led aft to port and starboard halyard winches. A recess in the coamings keeps the halyards tidy and provides handy stowage.

Carol Wu is one of the few owners to opt for slab reefing instead of in-mast furling, which is done from the mast as the main halyard and reefing lines terminate there.

Beneath the starboard bench is a vast cockpit locker which houses the dinghy, outboard, liferaft, lines and fenders.

I’m totally converted to the Hallberg-Rassy windscreen. It quickly converts to a full spray hood when you need it. The large surface next to the companionway also doubled as a workstation where Carol keeps her charts in a waterproof case and binoculars; essential items in the intricate Swedish archipelagos.

There’s also a generous gas locker under the deck just forward of the backstay, which Carol adapted for slightly larger bottles.

The broad hull makes the saloon large and light. Photo: Rick Tomlinson

Hallberg-Rassy 340 below decks

Step down the companionway and there’s a much more traditional feel than there is on deck. I was relieved that she still felt like a boat and not an apartment. There was the high-quality finish and lovely woodwork you’d expect from her Nordic builders.

The saloon is bright and airy thanks to two overhead hatches (one opening forwards and one aft – very clever), big portlights in the coachroof and two in the hull. Head room is 6ft 3in, so for many the high coachroof is a price worth paying.

The omission of a nav station allows for a more spacious saloon but means that the saloon table is the only work space, whether for your charts or laptop.

Two long benches make good sea berths, and you can raise the seat-backs to make wider bunks in port. One cost of the bright, spacious feel is stowage. The hull portlights, though lovely, take the place of what could otherwise be lockers. The lifting seat-backs make for a quick bunk conversion but are poor for stowing as everything tumbles out. Carol has fitted lee cloths behind them to make better use of space.

Tanks occupy most of the space under the seats, so despite the large interior volume, you need to be creative. The galley is another area which is sacrificed in favour of an open saloon space. It’s aft-facing and tucked in next to the companionway.

Although well-appointed with a deep fridge and generous lockers outboard, it was difficult to use under way. On port tack gravity draws you down towards the hob and it’s a struggle not to be pushed into it when you’re washing up. It means in certain conditions you can’t use the hob and the sink simultaneously. A rail across the cooker would help, although it would eat into a narrow space.

Storage solutions

Beyond the saloon bulkhead there’s a heads compartment, wet locker, and attractive master cabin. The wet locker impresses, with a dual-function door which can close off the master cabin.

The heads is bright, well-ventilated and just the right size. On a 34ft yacht, who wants to prioritise space in the loo? Not me. One niggle was that when heeled on a port tack the Dometic loo didn’t empty well, we had to luff up for a flush.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

The L-shaped galley is a squeeze and is hard to use when under way. Photo: Rachael Sprot

The vee-berth is 6ft 8in long and 6ft 6in across at its widest point. A useful shelf runs the length of the berth and you can store plenty of gear under the bunk. There’s a bedside table and small locker on both sides. A slight gripe is that the foredeck hatch is quite small for pushing sails in and out of, and it doesn’t fold down flat, so it’s not a handy place to store sails.

The Hallberg-Rassy 340 aft cabin has another huge bunk, two big lockers, four opening portlights and one in the hull. It also gives access to the steering gear and back of the engine which sits under the companionway steps.

Access to the Volvo Penta D1-30 is adequate. The day-to-day stuff is easy to reach from beneath the lifting steps of the companionway. The oil filter is more difficult as you need to go through a cut-out in the locker under the sink. Hallberg-Rassy prides itself on installing its engines after the boat is built and not building the boat around them. For big jobs you’d probably make use of this feature and take it out. There was plenty of power available under engine. At 1,500rpm she made 4.8 knots in flat water and she made 6.6 knots at 2,500 rpm.

With her saildrive and deep fin and bulb keel the Hallberg-Rassy 340 spins on a sixpence and responds promptly with steerage in reverse. However, like many modern boats, there’s more above the waterline and less below the waterline so she suffers from windage in gusty conditions.

The twin rudders mean there’s no immediate steerage from a burst of forwards, as water is thrown between rather than directly over them. Carol is one of the few owners not to have opted for a bow thruster and although not necessary, I can see why it would be useful.

The 340’s light airs performance makes her rewarding for coastal sailing. Photo: Graham Snook

Hallberg-Rassy 340 under sail

It’s under sail where the Hallberg-Rassy 340 stands out from her predecessors though. In six days of cruising we covered 300 miles with a good range of conditions.

There’s no doubt about it, she’s a fast boat. In three passages of over 80 miles we averaged 5.5-6 knots. On a close reach in flat water she made almost 6 knots in little more than 6 knots of wind under code zero and full main.

The long waterline pays dividends upwind. In a slight chop sailing around the north coast of Öland we made 6.4 knots in 15 knots apparent wind, just off close hauled. The helm was finger light, it was like holding the reins of an impeccably-trained racehorse: one which is probably too polite to win the race, but will give the jockey a thoroughly good time.

The fractional rig and small triangle means that there’s a surprising amount of work behind those headline boat speeds though. The modest genoa is easy to handle when beating, but it doesn’t give much oomph off the wind. A quick switch to a code zero or an asymmetric is required as you bear away. Although furling gear can make these headsail changes quite controlled, the process isn’t always as effortless as it sounds.

Carol is an energetic sailor and is quick to make the changes, but not everyone likes the foredeck as much as she does!

Lively performer

Although the Hallberg-Rassy 340 didn’t slice through the waves as a more traditional vee-shaped hull profile would, she didn’t slam as some boats of her type might. For a yacht of this kind, she coped well with the typical short, sharp seas of the Baltic shallows and she excelled in the intricate leads of the archipelagos, where her lively turn of speed and light airs performance were admirable.

What makes her a rewarding coastal sailing boat might prove tiring on long passages though, as there’s no off-button to her joie de vivre. There are other Hallberg-Rassys which are better adapted for ocean sailing: the huge saloon, lack of stowage, small galley and no nav station all point to different priorities in the Hallberg-Rassy 340.

But that doesn’t mean you couldn’t safely cross oceans in her. Equally, there are other performance cruisers which will be faster. But what the Hallberg-Rassy 340 does particularly well is to blend spritely performance with bluewater build quality and good old-fashioned manners.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

As we neared the end of my time on board we found a secluded anchorage amongst the islands of the Blue Coast, south of Stockholm. We had one other boat for company: a seaworthy-looking 35-footer. The owner proudly told us that it was the Rasmus 35, the very boat which kickstarted the Hallberg-Rassy dynasty in 1967. And despite their obvious differences, what they share is that they’re built to stay the course of time. Where will Aria Legra be in 50 years’ time? Who knows, after all, opposite tacks converge as well as diverge.

Expert Opinion on the Hallberg-Rassy 340

Ben Sutcliffe-Davies is a marine surveyor and full member of the Yacht Brokers Designers & Surveyors Association (YDSA) www.bensutcliffemarine.co.uk

The Hallberg-Rassy 340 hasn’t been around that long as the production run started in 2017. Some potential buyers may think that a survey is unnecessary, however I would always urge buyers to have a survey no matter how new the vessel. I’ve not surveyed a 340 in the flesh, but have surveyed plenty of Hallberg-Rassy’s.

I discussed with CEO Magnus Rassy issues on other models which could apply to the 340. Structurally, the 340’s laminate schedule has a good, well consolidated layup that uses woven rovings. These have long filament runs which don’t generally suck up moisture like chop strand mat does, so you should not see osmotic blistering.

With regards to the decks, the 340 now comes with the cap rail, decks and cockpit in Eco deck, an alternative to teak. Older 340s were built with teak, and this should be carefully examined. Although Hallberg-Rassy uses the best available teak, not all owners understand the care that it needs. Look carefully at the wear and thickness, where possible, around fittings and deck lockers.

The 340 comes with a Volvo D1 engine which is very reliable if properly serviced. Check the service records. The sail drive O-ring seal needs replacing every seven years. Make sure you check seacocks as anything over five years old is best replaced.

INTEGRAL BOWSPRIT

There is an integral bowsprit that serves many different purposes:

  • It is an ideal and efficient tack point for a code zero, or gennaker
  • It is ideal for carrying an anchor for the electric windlass
  • It is ideal for a bow ladder, making it easy to get onboard from a low dock or in a natural harbour

yacht tv hallberg rassy

TWIN RUDDERS

The twin rudders configuration gives a modern hull form ultimate control in all conditions, on all points of sail and the reduced load on each rudder increases the security of the system. The mechanical advantage of a single big wheel gives the helmsman control and feedback under sail, especially in tough weather.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

HIDDEN CONTROL LINES IN THE COCKPIT

There is a winch on the starboard coaming in the cockpit. Ropes from the mast aft to the clutches are hidden neatly. Excess lines aft of the clutches, stow in a storage box that is neatly hidden in the coaming. If you have electric in-mast furling, you can control outhaul, vang, main halyard and code zero halyard from the cockpit.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

LARGE COCKPIT

As tradition says, the cockpit of a Hallberg-Rassy is very well sheltered. The cockpit length is a generous 2.29 m, no less than 19 cm longer than on the 43 Mk III. The pedestal head has space for a good size modern chart plotter with multi function display.

360 degrees view of the cockpit

yacht tv hallberg rassy

FOLD OUT BATHING PLATFORM

There is a large fold out bathing platform. As standard the platform folds out manually, optionally there is a push button operation available. When the platform is not in use, the transom is elegantly closed.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

MODERN SAILPLAN

The sailplan is modern. There is no need for any runners even with an optional hard wind stay. The headsail is only slightly overlapping, making tacking easy. There is even a selftacking option. There is a 1:48 purchase backstay tensioner fitted as standard. The jib furler is a Furlex TD with under deck drum. The deck layout is clean and uncluttered with under deck mounted electric windlass and all deck hatches are flush mounted.

The waterline is 12.88 m, which is no less than 1.13 m longer than on the 43 Mk III. Frers speed prediction table tells that a loaded Hallberg-Rassy 44 will make 8.49 knots boat speed at 100 degrees in just 12 knots of true wind.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

LINEAR OR U SHAPED GALLEY

There is a choice of the standard U shaped galley to starboard or the optional linear galley to port with large work top space on both sides of the galley. There are also options for freezer, microwave, extractor fan with charcoal filter and even room for a dish washer.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

ONE OR TWO CABINS IN FRONT OF THE MAST

There are four options for the layout in front of the mast. Two with a one cabin and two with a two cabin configuration.

The standard layout has a large v cabin and a very large head with a separate shower with plexi glass doors and space for a washing machine. There is lots of locker space, two hanging lockers and a seat.

There are two layout options with an extra cabin: with the large head and an extra twin bunks cabin to starboard, as well as the standard forward cabin.

Another available option is to have a supercabin in front, moved a bit further aft, to get a wide bed with extra storage in front of the bed.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

GENEROUS AFT CABIN

The aft cabin is generous for the size of boat and available in two versions; two individual berths with a wide sofa between, or an extra wide, comfortable centre line berth, with dressing table to starboard and a rounded seat to port.

The aft heads is generous with a separate shower and plexi glass doors. There is an opening portlight towards the cockpit.

yacht tv hallberg rassy

LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT

The floor is in one level throughout the boat. There are six flush mounted deck hatches and eight opening portlights, as well as four hull portlights. The hull portlights are larger than those of other Hallberg-Rassys of this size. They are now as large as those on the flagship Hallberg-Rassy 64. All portlights and deck hatches have clear glass, except in the heads, which is milk coloured, to allow light in but obscure view into this compartment. The Hallberg-Rassy 44 has lots of natural light and good ventilation throughout the interior.

VIDEO TESTS

The Hallberg-Rassy 44 has been  video tested  by Voiles et Voiliers magazine from France and  Sittbrunnen.se from Sweden

PRESS QUOTES Quotes from the Hallberg-Rassy 44 test report in the June 2017 issue of Yachting World: The more I looked at this hull shape the more I liked it. The Hallberg-Rassy 44 in some ways shocked me. I expected the comfort and luxury, but aspects of the sailing performance genuinely blew me away. The first surprise of the day was delivered as we unfurled the in-mast mainsail to reveal a membrane sail with a headboard and a roach, shaped and supported by full length vertical battens - this was no saggy Dacron triangle. Elvström’s FatFurl system creates a genuinely well-shaped main. In 12 knots of breeze, with full sails we set off from the yard on a tight reach, easily trimming the main with an electric winch on the aft deck. Within seconds we were trimmed and up to 7.5 knots of boat speed. Trimming using reversible jib sheet winches actually made me giggle it was so easy. The following day I was really able to put the Hallberg-Rassy 44’s windward performance to the test. At most we had 240 m (0.15 miles) between the rocky shores and in the 24-knot breeze both the main and genoa were reefed. I have never seen windward performance like this in a boat with in-mast furling. It was mind-blowingly good, with the full vertical battens maintaining leech profile despite the reef. Heading into the mainland shore we were able to benefit from the small lifts and accelerations caused by neighbouring cliffs, the helm remained light and responsive throughout. The twin rudders made the boat feel nimble rather than labouring against the weight of a barn-door style single rudder. The natural light floods the saloon during the day from multiple coachroof windows as well as those in the topsides. I was able to appreciate how well placed these topside windows were while eating lunch at anchor - as the boat swung around in the breeze I was treated to a beautiful vista exactly at eye-level from my seat at the saloon table. A full-length, half-height stringer has been built into the structure to compensate for any loss in strength caused by the addition of these windows. In my opinion, what marks the Hallberg-Rassy 44 out from models in the past is that this boat is not just an adventure enabler but part of the adventure itself.

Yacht

Quality, Safety, Comfort, Craftsmanship – and Sailing Performance

Few yards have earned such a renowned reputation and global acclaim for building world-class cruising yachts as Hallberg-Rassy. Showcased as the "Flagship" yacht of their fleet when first introduced, the Hallberg-Rassy 62 has won numerous awards to include the "Import Cruising Boat of the Year" by Cruising World Magazine and "Yacht of the Year" in Germany.

Designed by the legendary German Frers, the HR 62 was first produced in 1997 and was an immediate success.  Hull # 2 was selected as “The Most Beautiful Yacht in the 2016 Arc+ Rally.  Constructed to the highest standards, the 62 shows off Hallberg-Rassy’s deep commitment to the safety and comfort of their owners.  These boats are thoroughly thought out to ensure both the ownership experience and the sailing experience will be nothing but a pleasure.  All of the systems are designed in such a way that double-handing her can be done with ease for any competent sailor.

The rigs are large and powerful, balanced by similarly large and deep ballast keels to make a speedy and comfortable passagemaker.  “Push-Button Sailing,” with helm-mounted controls for the headsail furlers, mainsail outhaul and furling, plus windlass, and thruster – are all at the skipper’s fingertips making it easy to handle the vessel under all conditions.  Strong hulls suitable for high latitude sailing keep you safe as you travel to the some of the most remote locations.

While safety is the first item on the design brief, usability must be a close second.  As you move around the vessel you see so many details that make daily life aboard easier - details that are just smart. The way the lines are truncated at the mast, the aforementioned push button sailing, massive engine room layout and features, efficient nav station, the more you look the more details you find that make you realize the kind of careful consideration that goes into every aspect of the vessel.

Finally, it simply must be mentioned that this vessel has a remarkable amount of smart storage throughout the vessel.  Throughout the vessel -  galley, cabins, salon - are tidy lockers and drawers and cabinets made of the finest joinery, and sufficient to carry your supplies for an entire round-the-world journey.

It’s impossible to list all the features of the boat here. I have been aboard this boat multiple times and each time I am as impressed as the time before. She is truly beautiful, but also immensely capable. The vessel can be trusted to get you there, no matter what.

Please have a look at the video for more information and commentary, then reach out and let’s talk about this impressive boat.

Due to their central location and integrated lee cloths these berths make for the perfect place to tuck into while underway, or while in the harbor, a good option for when you have additional guests on board. Each berth has a reading light and fan, custom mattress topper and fitted bedding. Ample cabinetry outboard plus hanging locker and additional cabinetry make this a suitable space for even longer term stays aboard.

Navigation Station

The navigation center is of proper size for an ocean going blue water boat and provides a functional, efficient and practical workstation to manage and operate the ship systems, perform chart work, and operate essential equipment. The large folding top desk offers sizable storage for folded charts and nav aids. The folding forward facing seat and nav table have storage below. Aft of the nav station is additional storage and cabinetry adjacent to the boats electrical panel and power management systems.  Redundant communication systems have been installed for offshore satellite or SSB communications.

Hull Construction

The hull is constructed of hand laid woven roving with isophtalic polyester resin and gelcoat with Divinycell PVC foam core above the waterline to provide both sound and environmental insulation. Solid laminate below the waterline. A rubbing strake with stainless steel strip runs the length of the hull. Longitudinal and athwartship stiffeners bonded to the bilges to evenly distribute the load of the mast and keel. Provides a strong superstructure grid for the external lead keel with 24,250 lbs ballast which is secured with 14 M36 stainless steel keel bolts which are easily accessible and visible from the deep bilge. The GRP, semi-balanced rudder with 100 mm stainless steel shaft hangs on three cast bronze bearings.. All major machinery was installed after the joining of the deck to ensure, if needed in the future, all components could be removed.

The Hallberg-Rassy 62 was constructed to conform with Germanischer Lloyd Category A Unlimited Ocean Voyage requirements, certificate number 24934

The Hallberg-Rassy 62 has a GRP sandwich constructed deck with Divinycell PVC foam core for strength and insulation. Designer's Commentary

"As the top of the line of high quality offshore cruising boats produced by this world renowned builder, the Hallberg-Rassy 62 represents years of experience and a synergy of efforts on the part of Hallberg-Rassy and our design office to produce the best possible yacht of its kind.

The high performance, well balanced, strong hull of moderate draft is matched by an efficient and easy to handle sail plan.

The areas reserved for leisure on deck are very generous and the interior has plenty of natural light and ventilation.

A new owner will immediately be able to appreciate Hallberg-Rassy’s know how building and fitting out their yachts, as much as their design and performance in all conditions."

Hallberg-Rassy 69 test : The queen of cruising yachts - now with video!

Jochen Rieker

 ·  21.02.2024

To kneel down: Flush deck up to the mast, a fine, gathered superstructure, stretched lines - even Germán Frers doesn't manage a hull like this every day

Push-button sailing in perfection

The hallberg-rassy 69 demonstrates pragmatic long-distance cruising capability, the hallberg-rassy 69 shows strong sailing performance with ease, measured values hallberg-rassy 69, yacht review hallberg-rassy 69, technical data hallberg-rassy 69, equipment and prices hallberg-rassy 69.

In the almost 21 years that he has been in charge of the shipyard, he has already experienced a lot. But the excitement surrounding his latest model, the largest ever built to date and probably for a long time to come, never ceases to amaze Magnus Rassy.

On the one hand, there are those who have been working their fingers to the bone about the HR 69 on the brand's popular social media pages. Some criticise the lack of grab handles in the saloon without ever having been on board. Others criticise the draught of 2.70 metres and the yacht's huge dimensions, which supposedly make many harbours and anchorages inaccessible. Still others passionately debate whether such large and expensive boats are not generally reprehensible.

The total construction time is almost one and a half years - five months for the hull and deck, eleven for the interior"

The Hallberg-Rassy 69 leaves no one cold

On the other hand, the brand's new flagship has been met with almost unanimous enthusiasm. The number of hits on the previous reports on YACHT online broke all records. And when the construction number one went into the water for the first time at the end of November, Magnus Rassy registered a phenomenon that he had never seen before: Almost every week, a paparazzo photo of the trial runs appeared in the regional media. One particularly dedicated ship lover even asked him to turn up outside his living room window at the next opportunity and to call in advance so that he could get the best possible shot of the 69.

No, these 22.22 metres of Scandinavian boat building can't leave you indifferent - especially not live and in 3D. At the pier of the Ellös shipyard harbour, the yacht looks even more impressive than cameras could ever capture. Although everything appears to be the same as always - the positive deck plan, the bulwark, the blue trim strips and the rubbing strake laminated into the hull form - the Hallberg-Rassy 69 looks completely different: more elongated, more present, simpler and yet downright majestic.

Proven solutions, also in XXL format

Not even the white fan cowls behind the hatches seriously detract from the otherwise completely flat foredeck, which stretches from the mast almost to the horizon. The hoods are an indication of the Swedes' strength of character, which will be discussed later, because they characterise the boat as a whole. They ensure permanent, highly efficient and absolutely watertight ventilation throughout the entire boat, even in the event of a seaway. However, you won't find this anywhere else in the luxury class.

Elsewhere, chrome-plated dorado fans are installed in their place, which can be removed along with the associated protective brackets. Or the deck openings are omitted altogether and the fresh air supply is ensured by fans running inaudibly in the engine room or at the very stern, which is also no problem with the large battery packs including solar chargers and diesel generators in this league of extraterrestrials. Magnus Rassy, however, swears by tried and tested solutions, even in XXL format. He even accepts the fact that half a dozen plastic hoods are spread across the imposing sheer size of the foredeck.

Of course, you shouldn't conclude that everything is the same here. The special features that set the Hallberg-Rassy 69 apart from its smaller sisters and from the relatively straightforward competition are just less obvious. These include practical solutions such as the flushing device integrated into the chain guide of the bowsprit, which keeps the anchor locker clean. The shore power cables rolled up on electrically driven drums below deck are also a clever solution, especially as there are two of them: one for the 60 hertz network common in parts of the Caribbean and the USA, and one for the 50 hertz supply used throughout Europe.

Ease of use was a top priority in the specifications anyway. Winches, furlers, boom vang and backstay of the Swedish flagship are hydraulically operated due to the enormous forces involved. On request, this also applies to the halyard tension, which perfects the principle of push-button sailing. Coupled with load sensors whose data is shown on a display at the helm, the trim can be reproduced virtually according to a table.

The centre segment of the windscreen can be opened. You might want to do without it in sub-zero temperatures, but not in summer

Preset threshold values prevent accidental damage if the finger remains too long on the button that is tightening the main halyard, for example. Otherwise, the hydraulic cylinders mounted on the port side of the mast would undoubtedly be able to cause the pulleys and halyard to burst.

Manoeuvres with centimetre precision in the tightest of spaces

Magnus Rassy has equipped the boat, which he intends to use himself for a summer or two as usual in order to be able to optimise any details, with pretty much every technical refinement. In addition to the carbon fibre mast and the performance sail set with hydraulically furled Code Zero, this also includes a stern thruster and a wireless remote control for harbour manoeuvres. It allows you to move freely on deck and manoeuvre with centimetre precision.

In addition to bow and stern thrusters, both manufactured by Sleipner, the Dockmate system also controls the Volvo Penta diesel engine. It acts like a reduction gear: this allows the luxury cruiser, which displaces around 50 tonnes with full tanks, to be laid gently alongside the jetty or a mooring at creep speed.

However, the HR 69 can also perform a fast-paced harbour ballet if required. If you turn the thruster levers in opposite directions, you can rotate on the spot with such speed that the foredeck crew gets dizzy. If you push off from the pier at full power, the swell is as if the surf were breaking into the harbour basin.

Undersized is a word that never comes to mind anywhere on the boat. The six-cylinder engine produces 300 hp; 180 hp four-cylinder engines are common on yachts of this calibre. The Cummins generator produces 17.5 kilowatts; the competition leaves it at 11 kW units. The anchor weighs 80 kilograms; according to the recommendations of Germanischer Lloyd, only 50 kilograms would be necessary. A 75-litre boiler would have been sufficient for the hot water supply; the Rassy has two on board.

The list goes on and on. And it is not mere gigantomania that has dictated the equipment, but once again pragmatism that has been very consciously trimmed for long-distance cruising.

In combination with the matching four-blade overdrive propeller from Gori, the powerful diesel engine allows extremely low-speed and low-noise cruising. At just 1,500 rpm, the HR 69 is already travelling at 8.8 knots on smooth water - only 0.7 knots slower than at 2,000 rpm. This reduces the perceived sound pressure in the aft owner's cabin by half (66 instead of 72 decibels). The range under engine also benefits enormously: the boat can cover a good 1,600 nautical miles without refuelling; at 2,000 rpm it is still a good 1,100 miles.

Anyone who thinks that the engine might have to make up for sailing deficits is way off the mark. Rather, the Rassy is one of the most capable and enjoyable yachts for long sea voyages. During the two-day test in mid-December, the Volvo Penta never once reaches operating temperature - and this is only partly due to the fact that the seawater flowing through it is just four degrees above zero out in the Skagerrak. Apart from mooring and unmooring, the engine is simply not needed, even though the wind inside the archipelago is only blowing lightly from the north-east at six to eight knots.

As soon as the main is upright, the log jumps to a speed of 4.5 to five knots through the water. As soon as the Code Zero is furled, the boat is travelling at seven knots, and as the breeze picks up, the HR 69 soon logs double-digit figures consistently out on the open sea, without the need for any special effort.

The Hallberg-Rassy 69 performs particularly well on the cross

High speeds are to be expected from a ship whose hull speed is 10.8 knots due to its length. But here, with only minimal wave support, the ease with which the yacht exceeds this limit is impressive. With a strong oscillating wind of 14 to 16 knots, the Rassy runs at a top speed of 13.3 knots on the beam and between eleven and twelve knots over long stretches - averaged and adjusted for current, mind you. This makes daily distances of 250 nautical miles and more a matter of course.

The Hallberg-Rassy 69 is a joy on the cross

As usual with the boats from Ellös, the Rassy has clear feedback from the rudder, which is not a matter of course in the large luxury cruiser segment. However, it does require a firm hand and concentration. This is because the highly effective steering of the twin rudders shows some play in the construction number one. As it responds very directly around the neutral position, it takes some getting used to in order to keep the boat precisely on course, especially in the strong winds near the coast.

On the cross, the HR 69 finds its track more easily and also shows a better balance. It is a pleasure to go upwind with her. Turning angles of less than 90 degrees are no problem, and the speed is simply inspiring: the yacht marches against the waves at nine to 9.5 knots, only taking on seawater on the foredeck and, thanks to the high righting moment, remains pleasantly stiff at only around 20 degrees - ideal for a cruising boat.

The heating is worth every cent

It still conveys this fascination as it makes its way back through the slightly snow-covered rocky islands in the afternoon twilight. The speed and pressure drop noticeably, but the fun remains. Indeed, it is almost intensified because the Rassy remains lively even at six to 6.5 knots on the wind, runs well upwind and gives the crew a feeling of immediacy and directness, as if she were a 40-footer. It is a sensation all of its own that emanates from it: perhaps its greatest strength, because it is its quietest.

What could not be tested in the minus six degree air temperature in December was the ventilation through hatches and cabin windows. However, it appears to be above average because even the front superstructure windows can be opened. There are also the numerous mushroom ventilators in the deck, which ensure a constant exchange of air. In any case, the capacity and control of the Kubota water-operated diesel heater were easy to assess under the given conditions. At almost 55,000 euros, it costs a lot, but is worth every single cent. It can regulate the temperature in each cab electronically to the exact degree; at minus ten degrees outside at night, it can conjure up a cosy 24 degrees or more inside if required.

Close relationship in the Hallberg-Rassy family

The transverse grain makes the 69 appear even wider. The veneer is lacquered up to ten times

In terms of atmosphere, all Hallberg-Rassy yachts are warm and cosy from the ground up. The 69 is no exception with her all-wood coachroofs, the traditional and modern interior and the solidity that can be felt everywhere. In terms of glazing, however, she sets new standards for the brand, as the hull windows in particular are now significantly larger and also more beautifully integrated. In the saloon, they measure almost two metres in length, which makes elaborate bracing necessary. You have to love them for that alone.

This makes it all the more surprising that it otherwise has the same rotary latches for drawers and lockers as the HR 340, which is not even half the size, the same wood, the same fittings in the heads and galley. She is a typical Rassy, only larger, more self-sufficient and technically more sophisticated.

The Hallberg-Rassy 69 has remained an owner's yacht

And she has remained an owner's yacht, as was already evident when sailing. This is made clear by the layout of the cockpit and, even more so, the cabin. Neither is primarily designed for travelling with a skipper and deckhand.

It is possible, without a doubt, but it is more likely to be the second-best solution. After all, if you want to accommodate a professional crew appropriately, you have to provide the entire forward cabin for this purpose - and then only have two small guest cabins amidships for friends or family. Alternatively, the crew can be accommodated in the passageway to the owner's cabin, which, of course, requires a spatial proximity that both sides tend to avoid today.

In this respect, Magnus Rassy is not only the first, but also the best possible owner for this boat. He wants to run his "Rassker 69" without outside help. He is right!

Portugal and climate

Hikes along the limestone red coast with the famous caves (old sinkholes) are very popular. Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is 30 minutes by car and is also the arrival place by plane. The Algarve has a so-called microclimate. This means that due to the relatively warm seawater and the mountains in the north, there is a pleasant climate all year round.

' title=

Sailing Area and Range

The Algarve and Canary Islands can be booked in the period from May to July. August and September are the months in which we visit the Mediterranean with Lady B.

Algarve & The Mediterranean coasts

The Algarve with its many (private) beaches is ideal for day trips and multi-day (weekend) sailing trips, for example to Gibraltar. From Portimão it is approximately 2 days sailing to Gibraltar. Obviously, other areas are also possible. Think of the Spanish Costas of Marbella or Barcelona for the somewhat quieter cruise sailing trip or onto the French coast (Riviera) with Marseille and St Tropez as stops.

Balearic Islands – The Mediterranean

The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca as the most famous islands) are pre-eminently known as the holiday islands in the Mediterranean. How special it is to experience the nightlife from a berth in the harbour or in front of a beach? Normally Mallorca and Ibiza are about 5 days and nights sailing from Gibraltar. A fantastic trip under a starry night sky.

Azores (Portuguese) – Atlantic Ocean

When the weather presents itself, we will cross the ocean from Portimão in about 5 days to the Portuguese Azores (Santa Cruz des Flores, Horta and Ponta Delgada) a little further up the ocean.

Madeira (Portuguese) – Atlantic Ocean

This island is located about 1000 kilometers from Portugal, near Morocco. The special thing about Madeira is the rugged landscape and the different climate zones. Thanks to this diversity, it is bursting with flora and fauna and makes this a true place for the adventurer.

Canary Islands (Spanish) – Atlantic Ocean

The Canary Islands are sun-drenched and a group of islands belonging to Spain: total of 7 islands plus 1 that is fighting to become official where no roads exist. The islands are waiting for you from Portimão after about 4 days of sailing off the African coast. There is often a nice breeze, which makes the sailing trip there an adventure in itself for the advanced sailor who likes to sail a piece of the ocean.

Both the Canary Islands and the Azores are destinations that are ideal for multi-day trips between the various islands.

General Weather Information

The weather in the Mediterranean is of course excellent and warm from June to September with generally calm weather conditions. The Canary Islands are known for their warm day temperatures all year round with a bit more wind in the summer for nice sailing trips. The Azores are more adventurous because of their location in the middle of the ocean, with perfect sailing conditions, especially in June and July.

Portimão is easily accessible from Faro airport from where it is a half hour drive to the marina. Taxis are affordable, any transport can be organized by the Lady B.

Hallberg-Rassy

Swedish yacht manufacturer Hallberg-Rassy has implemented the 3D EXPERIENCE platform on the cloud to deliver its world-renowned sailing yachts on time and meet its customers' expectations. By choosing the Sea Boat Builder  industry solution experience, the company now has a single environment where all designers can collaborate on a virtual twin.

I’d go as far as to say we are working 50% faster with the virtual twin as we don’t have to create a physical mock-up. It also means our approach is more sustainable since we are not wasting materials.

Hallberg-Rassy Erik Segerlind > Dassault Systèmes

Designing blue water sailing yachts

Obsessed with sailing from the age of four, it’s no wonder that Magnus Rassy would become CEO of one of the world’s most highly respected yacht manufacturers. “Each new Hallberg-Rassy model is a step forward,” Rassy said. “Our latest yacht – the 69 – is the greatest Hallberg-Rassy ever. Any successful business builds on giving customers what they want. Our customers want comfort and more space. And the 69 delivers on that.”

Hallberg-Rassy yachts are known far and wide for their sturdy construction, superb craftsmanship and easy handling – enabling effortless, long-distance sailing.  Since 1987, Hallberg-Rassy has worked with Frers Naval Architechture and Engineering in Argentina, one of the most talented yacht designers of our time, to give each yacht its unique grace. The details are then designed in house by Hallberg-Rassy in cooperation with Frers.

“You can spot a Hallberg-Rassy, even from a distance and regardless of whether it’s a new design or several decades old," Rassy said. "Thanks to the blue stripe around the hull and the windscreen, Hallberg-Rassy sailing yachts are instantly recognizable. The brand has a special charisma. We are careful to keep a magic balance between the long history of tradition we are famous for and contemporary features. There should never be too much of either.”

This balance is most definitely achieved in the Hallberg-Rassy 69. The deck is flushed forward of the mast, and the large interior benefits from an unusual amount of natural light, giving the crew full contact with the outside world. Like all Hallberg-Rassy yachts, the 69 also includes PushButtonSailing, which means that the sail can be set or the anchor can be lowered with a push of a button.

Hallberg-Rassy’s designs are not just unique, they are incredibly personal. “Our desire is to create yachts that are both well-built and comfortable, but also still nice and quick to sail,” he said. “There are a lot of interesting developments in racing that we can adapt in cruising. For example, the 69’s hull shape philosophy is inspired by racing. Nobody would think it would be good for cruising, but the reality is that you get more living space, more storage and a better sailing performance all at the same time.”

Hallberg-Rassy’s small design team remains incredibly close to its products to this day. Most of the engineering and manufacturing processes – including the lamination, woodwork and all the technical installations – take place in-house in Sweden, and a huge amount of work is still done by hand – just as it has been for over 50 years.

What is different, however, is how the company uses technology to ensure that it can eliminate waste, verify its designs and ensure that its sailing yachts are built right the first time – with no need for physical prototypes.

“We use the 3D EXPERIENCE platform to look at the yacht before we actually build it,” Rassy said.  “We can test different looks and different proportions, and we can build many different prototypes in the digital world. Once we start to build the real yacht, it’s not a prototype, it’s hull number one in the serial production. That’s really good.”

Building on success

Hallberg-Rassy’s relationship with Dassault Systèmes goes back many years. In 2005, the company replaced various CAD tools with CATIA V5 for Yachting . While this served the company well for almost two decades, Hallberg-Rassy wanted to modernize its technology environment by moving to the cloud.

“We wanted to get rid of our servers and reduce the cost of our in-house technology environment,” said Eric Segerlind, Hallberg-Rassy’s head of in-house design and development. “When we heard about Dassault Systèmes’ 3D EXPERIENCE platform on the cloud , it seemed like an obvious move for us. It provides us with the most modern iteration of the tools we were already using, but without the burden of maintaining our own infrastructure. In addition, the cloud enables us to securely work from anywhere.”

Hallberg-Rassy turned to local Dassault Systèmes business partner PLM Group for help with the implementation. “The PLM Group team made everything easy for us,” Segerlind said. “They took the time to understand and deliver on our requirements exactly. They’ve helped us with the cloud installation and provided ongoing training and support. We regularly attend the education days that the PLM Group hosts – they are incredibly useful.”

The Hallberg-Rassy team was up and running on the 3D EXPERIENCE platform in a matter of weeks – and quickly reaped the rewards. “The platform is so intuitive,” Segerlind said. “Within a week, I was using it to model complex surfaces.

“We also saw the benefits of the cloud straight away. When we were hosting our infrastructure, we had to connect to our servers to work from home. It was a clunky process. Today, because everything is in the cloud, we can work wherever we like – always safe in the knowledge that we are accessing the latest designs. With the click of a few buttons, I can bring up the design of a yacht in its entirety. This has reduced the planning I need to do before meetings – I pick up my laptop and go.”

While individual team members have the freedom to work from any location, internal collaboration has gotten better. “That’s because we are all working in the same virtual environment,” Segerlind said. “We can work collectively to solve issues.”

By working with a virtual twin on the 3D EXPERIENCE platform, the team can run simulations and calculations for the design of the interior and exterior of the yacht. This has allowed Hallberg-Rassy to work 50% faster and more sustainably, as there is no longer any reason to use a physical model and therefore no material is wasted.

Modern design meets traditional craftsmanship

The design process has also improved. Instead of using three or four different solutions – one for each part of the process – the 3D EXPERIENCE platform enables Hallberg-Rassy’s designers to carry out the entire development of their yachts in a single environment.

“When I started with the platform, I realized just how easy it was to change between different apps and functions,” said Patrik Wikström, an in-house engineer at Hallberg-Rassy. “The switch is seamless – in just a click of the mouse, you can change from parts to surfaces, to drawings, to simulations.”

Because modeling and simulation (MODSIM) , once totally separate entities, have been brought together into a unified design approach within the platform, verification and validation of the yacht happens dynamically.

At the earliest stage of the development process, designers can explore ideas and experiment with different weights, loads, surfaces and dimensions to find the optimal combination of parts. They can then adapt the geometry later.

“In the beginning, I tend to use the Surface app to sketch out my ideas,” said Wikström. “I’ll then change to a different app, such as Sheet Metal Design, to produce the detail. At this point, I’ll share my ideas with Eric, who will then make a frame analysis and run simulations to verify the design of the various parts. For example, he’ll be able to work out the flex of a particular part and whether it will withstand operation at sea. He may suggest we make a part bigger or stronger, depending on these simulations.”

“I create big shapes, such as the hull deck structure, using surface modeling,” said Segerlind. “The more involved stainless-steel parts and the wooden interior are done with solid modeling. I can run calculations directly in the 3D EXPERIENCE platform, which saves a huge amount of time – in the past I’d have to export the design to a different program, run the calculations and then take the design back. It’s much quicker and easier now.”

We have already delivered almost 10,000 yachts. Every single one of those has been on time. We have never been late on any delivery. We can only keep this record if we maintain full control over production – and that means keeping all processes close. That’s what the 3D EXPERIENCE platform enables for us.

Hallberg-Rassy Magnus Rassy > Dassault Systèmes

A streamlined approach to design to production

Once Segerlind and his colleagues develop the functional parts, they combine them into a fully assembled 3D virtual twin of the sailing yachts . “The virtual twin helps us make the right product development decisions,” Segerlind said.

For example, when the Hallberg-Rassy team had to engineer a way to fold out the bathing platform on one of its yachts without hydraulics or electricity, it used the 3D EXPERIENCE platform to work out a practical approach. “If we were doing this in the real world, we would have to produce steel parts which would have to be welded, taken apart, modified and then re-welded,” said Wikström. “By being able to change the shape and function of the various parts in the digital world, we save a lot of time and costs.”

The virtual twin can also be shared with suppliers, customers and other key stakeholders. “We can easily put virtual people into the model too,” Segerlind said. “This helps stakeholders to visualize the scale of various features, and also to help us understand whether it is possible to reach certain installations.”

If a customer requests a specific setup or configuration, the Hallberg-Rassy team can quickly adapt existing designs instead of starting from scratch. This saves further time and effort. “If a customer requests that we change one of the surfaces, for example, we can easily adapt the model,” Segerlind said. “We now have the full design data for yachts in the platform – this is all knowledge that we can re-use in future projects.”

Because this approach sees customer feedback applied to the model long before manufacturing begins, time, waste and costs are reduced. “I’d go as far as to say we are working 50% faster with the virtual twin as we don’t have to create a physical mock-up,” Segerlind said. “It also means our approach is more sustainable since we are not wasting materials.”

Once any issues are ironed out virtually, Hallberg-Rassy jumps straight to production. The CATIA design files are sent directly to Hallberg-Rassy’s state-of-the-art CNC machines to precision cut parts. “Using the 3D EXPERIENCE platform means our 3D design is accurate right from the start,” said Wikström. “This means that the various parts will be made to precise measurements and, when it comes to production, they will fit together perfectly.”

Hallberg-Rassy 69

Perfection the future.

Hallberg-Rassy will also continue to unlock the full capabilities of the Dassault Systèmes solution in the months and years to come. “We are starting to explore new features of the 3D EXPERIENCE platform, including the Piping and HVAC Engineering solution , so that we can better plan the routing ways to keep the yacht as solid as it should be, without damaging or impacting the overall structure of the yacht,” Segerlind said.

“In a yacht, the supply system is very large, so the piping needs more space than you think,” added Wikström. “The piping solution will help us make the best use of space.”

The company will also continue using the platform to test new ideas virtually. “The biggest challenge we face is making the right decisions for the products,” Segerlind said. “Our products have a long lifespan: we have models that we have been building up to 16 years. The 3D EXPERIENCE platform helps us decide which features are optimal for investment.”

Ultimately, Rassy is excited to see how Hallberg-Rassy can build on its success. “We have already delivered almost 10,000 sailing yachts,” he said. “Every single one of those has been on time. We have never been late on any delivery. We can only keep this record if we maintain full control over production – and that means keeping all processes close. That’s what the 3D EXPERIENCE platform enables for us.”

Using the 3D EXPERIENCE platform means our 3D design is accurate right from the start. This means that the various parts will be made to precise measurements and, when it comes to production, they will fit together perfectly.

Click for the Hallberg-Rassy video transcript

00:00 – 00:21

Magnus Rassy, CEO, Hallberg-Rassy:

The typical Hallberg-Rassy customer expects a well-built yacht that is easy to handle for long distance sailing, effortless sailing. That's really important.

00:22 – 00:33

Eric Segerlind, Head of In-house Design and Development, Hallberg-Rassy:

To design and engineering our yachts, the main issue is the time schedule. With the Virtual Twin, we can reduce the time to market with 50% to 60%.

00:34 – 01:02

Magnus Rassy:

We use the 3D EXPERIENCE platform so we can look at the yacht before we actually build it. And we can build many different prototypes in the computer. So once we start to build the real yacht, it's not a prototype, it's hull number one in the serial production, and that's really good. Each new Hallberg-Rassy model is a step forward and the newest model we present now is Hallberg-Rassy 69. It's the largest we ever built.

01:03 – 02:05

Eric Segerlind:

When we start designing a new yacht, we always have a concept, how big it is, what should be included and what style it should be compared to other models. And then we start with the GA, general arrangement plan, and check if everything fits. And then we have to adapt the measurements. We start, of course, with the hull and then we put in the interior. In the 3D EXPERIENCE we start with the interior, change the hull after that, and then do the weight calculations, weight distributions and also where to put the strong points of the yacht. We combine surface- and solid-modelling in one setup, and that gives us a big step forward. The biggest value to incorporate all the piping and so on, is that we can plan the routing ways and do not damage the structure. So we keep the yacht as solid as it should be. With the Virtual Twin, we can easily show and also put in people with certain dimensions and how to reach things, installations and so on.

02:06 – 02:27

Patrik Wikström, In-house Engineer, Hallberg-Rassy:

It's everything to have this Virtual Twin. Everyone sees the same thing, so it's very visual, how it will look when we are finished. In 3D EXPERIENCE it's much easier to switch the apps and get the different functions from surface treatment to part or to simulation.

02:28 – 02:58

With 3D EXPERIENCE on cloud, all the data are up to date in the model all the time, and the 3D EXPERIENCE platform makes us collaborate easier and we produce it directly from 3D EXPERIENCE CAD. The main driver to 3D EXPERIENCE platform from V5 was to have a scalable solution for us, and I really recommend 3D EXPERIENCE on cloud to other companies. It's the best.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

  12. Hallberg-Rassy 340 review: 2017 model put to the test

Tight package. The cockpit of the Hallberg-Rassy 340 is large for a 34ft yacht, extending all the way aft to the transom. At the companionway end it's just narrow enough for a 5ft 6in shorty to brace her legs across, but further back it becomes quite a stretch. Originally designed for a tiller, the twin wheel option is far more popular.
