Kona Catamarans

Warning: Before embarking on any outdoor activity, make sure to check with lifeguards for current conditions!

One of the best ways to take full advantage of the beauty of the Kona Coast is to explore it by Kona catamaran tours . With calm, clear waters, excellent weather, and a spectacular coastline protected by 14,000 mountains, it’s almost as if Kona’s waters were made for catamaran sailing. One of the most stable ocean-going vessels and ranging in size and type, Kona catamarans are the most popular type of watercraft in here. Praised for their speed and stability, catamarans in Kona consist of identical length twin hulls with a cabin, deck, or trampoline webbing in between. We can personally attest that Kona catamaran cruising is one of the most fun and fulfilling things you can do on your vacation !

Kona Catamaran Charters

One of the coolest “cats” in Kona is Kamanu Charters’ 36-foot custom catamaran. The super-friendly crew of Kamanu has been sailing Kona’s waters for 40 years and offers some of the best sailing tours in town. From snorkeling to whale watching  to sunset sails , they have it all. If you want to avoid the crowds, family-owned and operated Paradise Sailing Hawai‘i specializes in small intimate groups and hands-on sailing. Paradise Sailing Hawai‘i is one of the newest catamaran charters in Kona, and they pride themselves on personal service and guest comfort. Departing from Keauhou Bay, Sea Paradise offers visitors a first-class Kona catamaran tour experience complete with snorkeling. With several tours to choose from on their state-of-the-art vessel, their offerings include sails to Kealakekua Bay and nighttime manta ray adventures. If you are a sailor who already knows the ropes, almost all catamaran operators in Kona offer private charters.

At Body Glove we are fully committed to the principle of sustainability and all it entails. This idea is not only about what we do now, or what we have done in the past. It’s about striving to become more sustainable over time, examining and re-examining our processes to find new ways to reduce our impact on the environment.

What Sets Body Glove Apart from Other Tour Companies?

Body Glove Cruises Designated a Kuleana Green Business!

Body Glove Cruises is proud to be recognized as a Kuleana Green Business by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. The Kuleana Green Business Program recognizes and honors businesses who promote environmental responsibility and implement sustainable business practices throughout Hawaii.

In Hawaiian, the word “kuleana” means responsibility. Businesses designated Kuleana Green are those who recognize and understand their responsibility to create and sustain positive environmental impacts within their communities. As businesses and individuals, they maintain high standards and a strong commitment to their communities and the world around them.

Extensive criteria must be met before being recognized as a Kuleana Green business, including environmental, social and economic sustainability. The business must prove responsible interaction with the environment that avoids depletion or degradation of natural resources, and their business model must allow for long-term environmental quality.

One way Body Glove Cruises implements their sustainability practices is by the elimination of plastic straws. Although small, plastic straws are seldom recycled. And while they make up a small percentage of ocean plastic, their small size makes them significant foes of marine animals. They are often consumed by fish and can become lodged in the nostrils of sea turtles. Body Glove Cruises uses only paper straws and educate their guests about not using plastic straws to help save the oceans.

According to the National Park Service, Americans alone use 500 million straws a day! Body Glove Cruises understands plastic straws are completely unnecessary and we don’t need straws to consume beverages.

Body Glove Cruises is also proud to be the only boat in the United States certified by the Green Restaurant Association. At Body Glove Cruises, we are passionate about sharing the natural beauty of Hawaii with visitors from around the world. Our company understands that their future success is dependent upon a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Top-Rated Kona Snorkel Trips, Boat Tours & Whale Watching in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii!

catamaran trips in kona hawaii

The Explorer snorkel trip is one for serious snorkelers. This is NOT a booze/party boat atmosphere, if you want that, get on the big catamaran. What you get instead is a small pontoon boat with 2 big outboards that flies over the water to sites the big boats can't access. You get to do 3 dives instead of 1, and there's no crowd in the water. We were the only boat in one of our stops. The crew were super friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable and customize the trip to the conditions and the divers desires. We also got a nice sandwich for lunch and saw dozens of pilot whales. We loved it.

Great cruise! The staff was wonderful, super helpful, and fabulous customer service. Everything that was advertised about the cruise was true and they also provided other water equipment for those who are not adept at snorkeling.

The ride was really smooth!I loved the wind in my hair; it was like a little mini blow-dry between snorkel stops, haha! It felt great on this warm day. It was really fun to have multiple places to explore in the water. Sitting on the side of the boat to enjoy the sunshine after each snorkel stop was so lovely. Lunch was great, and the staff could not have been any more kind and friendly. They had a great selection of craft soft drinks, water and coconut water that they offered us all day. I highly recommend the Body Glove snorkel trip for an unforgettable adventure and enjoyable boat ride along the beautiful Kona coast. It felt like we were out there all day, but still got back in time to have another activity planned or do some relaxing in the afternoon.

One of the best activities on the island for groups and families! We saw manta rays, dolphins, and flying fish. Great presentation from the staff naturalist. Sunset cruise with Hawaiian cultural speaker and local Hawaiian singer made it top notch for us.

  • 1garlicgirl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic!!!!! Captain Brian and deck hand Jewel provided an incredible afternoon, going to their favorite places for us, with known whale sightings and dolphin encounters. Jewel was a wealth of information about both the whales and the dolphins. While Brian with his trusty sonar found whales who just happened to be in a very entertaining mood, doing tail flaps, full body breaches out of the water, with twists and turns! It was amazing to watch. As an added attraction, we came across a school of dolphins swimming alongside the boat, getting so close we could almost touch them. While Captain Brian entertained us on board with stories of past incredible whale encounters, Jewel jumped in the water and said the could actually hear the whales! How cool is this? This is the second year in a row we’ve used this company and I highly, highly, highly recommend this company! You’ll have a great experience. Read more Written February 26, 2024

Exploring the Big Island (which isn’t all that big): From Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the Kona coast

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – It’s called the Big Island, but in reality, the island of Hawaii isn’t all that big.

About one-tenth the size of Ohio, the island can be circumnavigated in about five hours. Part of me wishes it took even longer.

What the island lacks in size, it makes up for in ecological diversity – from volcanoes to beaches, rainforests to snow-capped mountains.

The largest of Hawaii’s 137 islands, the Big Island is one of the most diverse places on the planet, encompassing four of the world’s five climate zones. (The missing zone? The polar climate, although the island’s highest peaks do see considerable snow.)

It’s also the youngest of the islands, geologically speaking, and still growing, with new land on dramatic display within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

All of the Big Island’s many facets were on vivid display last month when I drove from the cool, misty northeast corner to the sunny, dry northwest. In 20 minutes, the geography — and the weather — changed completely.

If you want a Hawaii vacation that offers a little something of everything – terrific hiking, great beaching, scenic drives and amazing stargazing – the not-so-Big Island is your place.

Exploring the Big Island

My husband and I spent five days on Hawaii last month, part of a two-week tour of four islands.

We split our time between two locations – Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , where we spent two full days, and Kailua-Kona, a small city on the west side, where we also spent two days.

As for the fifth day? That was the day we spent driving around the island – with stops for waterfalls, scenic overviews and the most beautiful avocado toast I’ve ever seen.

Read more: No, you don’t need four-wheel drive in Hawaii, and other car rental tips

We flew from Maui to Kona via Hawaiian Airlines (one-way fare for the 20-minute flight: $55 per person). Our first stop: Hulihee Palace , a New England-style mansion built in 1838 by John Adams Kuakini, who was the royal governor of the island at the time. The six-room estate later became a summer house for King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani, two of the island’s last monarchs. (Reminder: Hawaii was an independent nation before it was annexed by the United States in 1898.)

The palace occupies a lovely piece of waterfront property on Alii Drive (“Royalty Drive”), the main thoroughfare through town. In 1925, it was purchased by the government to save it from possible hotel development. Today, the palace is open to the public as a cultural museum, operated by the Daughters of Hawaii.

The palace is filled with artifacts, from centuries-old war clubs and spears to gorgeous monarchy-era koa furniture to an elaborate family tree of kings, queens and other Hawaiian royals. The palace is open Wednesday through Saturday; admission $15-$22; information daughtersofhawaii.org

After a palace tour and a giant bowl of shaved ice, we departed Kona, heading south and east toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Exploring the national park

Depending on how you count them, the Big Island is home to an astounding seven volcanoes — Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mahukona, Kohala and Kamaʻehuakanaloa (which is forming underwater about 22 miles off the island’s southeast coast ).

Kilauea is considered the most active volcano in the world – it last erupted in September – and is the centerpiece of the national park, which was established in 1916.

Kilauea was rumbling about two weeks before my visit, and scientists were on the lookout for a possible eruption. Alas, we weren’t so lucky. But this park is otherworldly even without an erupting volcano – easily worth a couple of days or more.

We started our visit at the visitors center, where we watched a short film about the geologic history of Hawaii, picked up maps and got some hiking advice.

Our first trail: Kilauea Iki, one of the park’s most popular, a moderate 4-mile path across the crater floor of Kilauea Iki (little Kilauea), which erupted in 1959. It felt like we were walking across the moon. A short spur takes hikers into the Thurston Lava Tube, a cave-like structure created by a river of lava more than 500 years ago.

Afterward, we walked the easy 0.7-mile Sulphur Banks trail, where sulfur and other hot gases released from magma have produced colorful crystals. And don’t miss the nearby Steam Vents – small openings in the earth emitting hot steam from rainwater coming into contact with hot rocks.

Signs along the path warn visitors of the potential for both hazardous air quality due to the gases and the dangers of getting too close to the vents. (“One wrong step and you could be scalded by steam,” reads one.)

Many of the top natural attractions around the summit are connected by Crater Rim Drive, which used to encircle the Kilauea Caldera. In 2018, the roadway’s eastern section was closed after being seriously damaged by an eruption. The rim roadway is a semi-circle now, which dead ends into Chain of Craters Road, a dramatic, 19-mile drive down the south side of the volcano to the Pacific Ocean.

We spent the better part of our second day in the park exploring Chain of Craters, and the numerous stops and overlooks along the roadway. The road ends at the water’s edge, where a short walk leads to views of the Holei Sea Arch, rising 90 feet from the surf. You can also walk atop some of the newest sections of Earth here, on lava from a 2003 eruption.

Other stops: The 2.5-mile Mauna Ulu Eruption Trail, across lava flow from the 1969-1974 eruption; and the Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs, the largest collection of petroglyphs in the state, including human figures, circles and other shapes carved into lava rock hundreds of years ago. Included among the carvings: 16,000 puka (holes), where Hawaiians placed their infants’ umbilical cords to ensure a long and prosperous life.

Back at the top, don’t miss a stop at the Volcano House , a more modern incarnation of the 1840s-era inn that was originally built out of grass and Ohia wood. The lodge offers 33 overnight rooms, plus the well-regarded Rim restaurant, with local fare in a scenic setting overlooking the caldera. We dined at the restaurant, but stayed a short distance from the park in the small community of Volcano, population 753, which offers numerous overnight and restaurant options.

Across the road from the lodge is the Volcano Art Center, located in another incarnation of the Volcano House, the 1866 version, about which Mark Twain wrote, “The surprise of finding a good hotel at such an outlandish spot startled me, considerable more than the volcano did.” The former inn has been turned into an exquisite art gallery, with pieces made by local artists.

Reminder: Admission to this (and most) national parks is $30 per car, good for seven days. Information: nps.gov/havo .

And a final note about the weather here, which can be highly variable. We started our mornings in long pants and sweatshirts and were down to T-shirts by the afternoon. Rain is frequent at this elevation, so bring a waterproof jacket.

Driving the island

After two days in the park, we rose in the morning and headed northeast toward Hilo, population 45,000, the largest city on the island.

It’s a popular destination for visitors, but in the winter, in particular, is more likely to be cool and wet. We stopped briefly in town, admiring the massive banyan trees along Banyan Drive and taking a quick stroll through Liliuokalani Gardens, a formal Japanese garden named for the former Hawaiian queen.

The next stop on our around-the-island route: Akaka Falls State Park , with a gorgeous 442-foot high waterfall as its centerpiece, more than twice as high as Niagara Falls. (Reminder: Most Hawaii state parks, including this one, charge $10 for parking, plus $5 per person admission.)

In nearby Honomu, we stopped for brunch at Mr. Ed’s Bakery and The Hive, which created the most beautiful avocado toast I’ve ever seen – almost too pretty to eat, but I managed.

From Akaka, we traveled 40 miles north toward Waipio Valley Lookout, a scenic stop overlooking the spectacular Waipio Valley, with towering cliffs rising 2,000 feet above the ocean. Visitors used to be able to drive the steep roadway into the valley, a practice that was halted in 2022. Now, if you want to descend, you’ll have to pay a guide to take you.

From here, we drove west across the North Kohala peninsula toward the west coast. The difference in weather and climate was astounding along this route – one moment we were surrounded by lush rainforest, the next by bright sunshine and desert.

Exploring Kona

Happy to be back in the sunshine, we stopped en route to Kona at Anaehoomalu Bay Beach, a gorgeous sandy stretch, dotted with volcanic rock.

On our agenda in the evening: the Island Breeze Luau , complete with an all-you-can-eat buffet and unlimited Mai Tais. The show was a celebration of Hawaii’s history and culture, with a royal court, hula lesson (“move your hips like you’re stirring a pot”) and a show-stopping Samoan fire knife dance as a dramatic finale.

The show takes place at Courtyard by Marriott Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, on the former grounds of Kamakahonu, the 1813-era residence of Kamehameha I. A reconstruction of the residence is on the site, which is around the corner from Hulihee Palace.

Our final full day on the Big Island included a coffee tour in the morning and a snorkeling cruise in the afternoon.

Greenwell Farms is among the oldest and largest Kona coffee producers on the island, founded in 1850 by Henry Greenwell and now spread across 300 acres on the hills southeast of town.

The farm, still owned by the Greenwell family, offers free 45-minute tours of the operation, which includes an overview of the growing and roasting process – with stops in the field, by the sorting machines, pulping machines, hulling machines and sundecks.

Guide Madalyn McKnight called Kona coffee “the best of the best,” grown in a small area on the island, just 35 miles from north to south, from 500 feet elevation to 3,200 feet. The plants benefit from the region’s porous soil, elevation and 60-70 inches of annual rainfall.

Free coffee samples are offered at the gift shop, where I loaded up on souvenirs of not just coffee, but coffee-infused chocolate, granola and other treats.

For our final activity on the Big Island, we boarded the Fair Wind II catamaran and headed to Kealakekua Bay, a marine conservation district south of Kona that is home to some of the best snorkeling in the state.

The bay holds much historic significance as well, once home to ancient temples, burial sites and other sacred spaces. This is also where British explorer Captain James Cook, the first documented European to visit Hawaii, was killed in 1779 during a skirmish with Native Hawaiians. A monument on shore commemorates his legacy.

But what’s most spectacular here is under the water – schools of brightly colored fish, including rainbow-hued butterflyfish, surgeonfish, tang, triggerfish and so many others. It was as good as snorkeling in the Caribbean, which is a high bar.

Back on board the boat, we also saw spinner dolphins, much smaller than their bottlenose cousins, twirling through the air, and North Pacific humpback whales, also known as Hawaiian humpbacks, breaching in the distance.

Honestly, is there a better not-so-Big Island finale than that?

If you go: The Big Island

Where we stayed: Keeping lodging costs reasonable anywhere in Hawaii is a challenge, but I tried. We spent three nights at Aloha Junction guesthouse in Volcano Village, a former bed and breakfast that no longer offers breakfast, but is a comfortable, well-located place to stay. Rates start at about $175 per night. Information: bbvolcano.com

In Kona, we stayed at the Royal Kona Resort , on the south side of town, with a terrific waterfront setting. Rooms start at about $250 per night, but that doesn’t include parking or a $25 per night resort fee. Information: royalkona.com

What we didn’t do: One of the top experiences on the Big Island is stargazing atop Mauna Kea, the island’s massive 13,796-foot-high volcano. Several companies offer tours to the top, which include dinner, guided stargazing and cold-weather gear (the summit is always windy and cold, with temperatures in the 30s most nights). These tours typically run $300 and up, and take up to eight hours. Independent travelers can go on their own, but must have four-wheel drive to reach the summit (and even so, many rental car companies prohibit the trip). The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station , at 9,200 feet, is more easily reached, and is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

My husband and I attempted to create our own stargazing experience within the national park, heading after dark to the Uekahuna overlook, the highest point on the Kilauea summit. The problem: Kilauea’s elevation is about 4,000 feet, which sometimes puts it in the clouds, not over them. There was cloud cover when we arrived, but the clouds eventually parted and offered at least a partial view of the dynamic February sky. Next time, though, I’ll try Mauna Kea.

An ocean adventure tour company is celebrating 50 years in business in Hawaii.

Captain Zodiac started in Kauai in 1974 by Clancy Greff, son of a Navy admiral.

“They were basically running shuttle trips out the Na Pali coastline on the Kalalau Trail,” said current owner Colin Cornforth. “You could buy a one-way ticket and either get dropped off or picked up at the end of the Kalalau. That’s how the concept of ocean rafting started in the world.

“We were the first company in the world that utilized zodiacs for commercial passengers for hire. It quickly evolved from there into sightseeing and snorkel tours that were run out of Hanalei Bay until the early ’80s.”

The business expanded to the Big Island in 1984 with two soft-bottom rafts. In 1993, they brought over the first hard-bottom inflatable raft — referred to as a rigid hull inflatable boat — and Cornforth said everything in the industry started evolving.

“It was a more stable platform for boats and more comfortable for wildlife and snorkeling excursions,” he said.

In 2004, the Kauai business was sold, and Bill and Linda Zabolski purchased the Kona operation. That is when Cornforth and his wife, Amy, started working for the company.

“I worked for them for 15 years and knew they were in their early 60s and looking forward to retirement,” he said. “My wife and I at that time had been with them for so long, I really did not want to see all of my years of dedication to this company get bought up by an outside company or an outside investor. I wanted to strengthen our support in the community and the basis of our clientele, which has been supporting Captain Zodiac since the ’80s.”

The Cornforths purchased the company in May 2019 less than a year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My wife was integral in securing the first (Paycheck Protection Program) loan awarded on the island. She was in Zoom meetings daily following the trends of the pandemic to make sure we could take care of our employees,” he recalled. “What was of utmost important to us was making sure that we secured our staffing. I was familiar with a lot of other companies that let everybody go, but we took the other approach that whatever we get out of this, we are going to share with everybody. We secured funding and shut our doors on March 19, 2020, and didn’t open up again until the state opened up safe travel from the mainland in October 2020.”

The couple was able to retain all of their 17 employees.

Cornforth has been working with the nonprofit Cascadia Research Collective out of Olympia, Wash., since 2015

“They do a lot of field efforts for science based telemetry tagging and biopsy samplings,” he said. “They have a huge data set that has been going on for 23 years. I was given the opportunity during the pandemic to train a handful of my staff to become research biologists. We spent the better part of the pandemic offshore working with all of Hawaii’s dolphins and whales, getting a little money from the nonprofit to keep us going. It gave us something to do and something to look forward to and something to evolve our commercial business into having efforts that can support research, as well.”

He said his wife has joined the Sanctuary Advisory Council for humpback whales.

“She represents commercial operators here off of the Big Island. Whale watching during the winter months is a mainstay of our business, and continues throughout the year,” he said. “We’ve had efforts that expanded to working with the University of Hawaii Marine Mammal Research Program with a couple of post doctoral students that were doing surveys off the island for spinner dolphins. In 2021-2022 we spent 90 days off the west side of the island doing surveys from the north end of the island to Honokohau Harbor for spinner dolphin habitat, so we participated in a very comprehensive study and stock assessment.”

He said this has been an exceptional year for humpback whale tours.

“Our whale watching is probably the best it has been in about eight or nine years. We have been seeing a lot of new calves out here which shows the resilience of that species. It’s a bright future when you see a lot of moms and calves out here and a healthy population.”

Cornforth said he wants to continue their efforts and broaden research opportunities.

“We have been personally been asked to participate in the NOAA vessel surveys based through the Pacific Island Fishery Science Center. We want to continue mentoring younger people and new mariners on the island and keeping the tradition alive.

“This company is in its 50th year. It is something that is really important for us procuring the business (and) just making sure we could keep the history of this company surviving,” he said.

Their fleet of seven vessels depart daily from Honokohau Harbor, providing whale watching, snorkeling tours, pelagic wildlife excursions and private charters.
