Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Our lunch here was good, as we have come to expect as regular visitors to the restaurant while in Canberra to see an aged relative who enjoys being taken here for lunch. The food is consistently good quality, the service efficient and the atmosphere overlooking... the Lake very pleasant. Prices are restaurant rather than club prices. More

We had lunch at the Yacht Club last week, the 2-course meal for $55 each. The oysters to start were great, and the chicken was very nice as a main. The club offers excellent views over the water and boats, and also has an area... downstairs which offers cheaper fare, fish and chips etc. It's VERY DIFFICULT to park there on a Saturday, be warned! More

Went there for the daughter’s 21 st birthday lunch with about 15 family members services was great meals served in good time .Meals were good everyone was happy with meal quality. Just menu was a little confusing with the naming of some dishes with a... couple of people getting caught out with what the thought they were ordering & what they actually received and a bit of size difference in the meal size depending on what meal you ordered with some meals being huge and other’s rather small but I would definitely eat there again especially now I know a bit more about the menu . More

Hi Roger and Cindy, thank you for your feedback. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed celebrating your daughter's 21st birthday with us. We look forward to seeing you again 😊

Terribly unorganised. The lunch was set from 12pm to 2pm. They had a bread roll on the table but Entree didn’t arrive until 12.45pm and lunch at 1.45pm. I can’t understand how they could be so unprepared when they knew how many people were coming... and it was the 1 menu for everyone . The seafood platter for entree tasted like frozen seafood and the main was underwhelming too. Won’t be back in a hurry. More

Booking was a big waste of time. We rang up a few times and no one would answer the phone even though it was less than 30 minutes prior to opening time. The answering machine said to make a booking on line which we did.... We received a confirmation email for the booking. When we arrived at the restaurant they didn't have our booking. The young male tried to find a booking but kept on looking at us blankly. We showed him our email confirmation and he was still at a loss. A young female came over and she had no idea either and read our confirmation email stating the booking, date and time, and name. No applogies of course, just directed the young male to take us to a different area of the restaurant. Not a nice way to start an outing, standing around while no one can find your booking even though you have a confirmation email. The view: Seriously, what a joke. The staff, who are all young had every blind totally down in the whole restaurant, even though there was no sun. We sat down at our fully closed blind table and got up and opened the blind. No sun at all. This is how incompetent these people are. They have no common sense and no initiative even to open the blinds half way up, if they feel there is a slight chance of seeing sun. Apart from that, there isn't that much to look at anyway due to the heavy foliage and trees outside. You can see some dead flat lake and grass but when you first walk into the restaurant there is no wow factor as the staff have the blinds fully down, even when there is no sun. The menu: It was pitiful. This particular set menu is awful. And if you don't feel like eating meat for lunch, the only meal you can choose from the main is disgusting for this tme of year. We aren't vegetarians, but sometimes you just want another option for lunch. The drinks: We were asked ONCE for drinks and then never saw another staff member again. Coffee: No, not asked once for that either. Overall: We have given this experience one star because there is no ambience when the blinds are all down as the restaurant is dim, dark and dingy. The food is like poor quality club food with fine dining prices. The service is non existent except they rush to get your order and force you, yes force you to select the dessert PRIOR to you receiving and eating your main course. This says alot about the lack of processes and understanding of what a restaurant is from these people at the Yacht Club. More

Hi Tarakay, I'm sorry for the underwhelming experience you had on your last visit to the Yacht Club. If possible it would be good to discuss this further with you, you can reach me directly on my email [email protected] Kind Regards, Anurag Gautam - General... More

5 adults and 3 children. Meals were served randomly, first came two kids meals, a long wait for the third. Then two entrees….soups and a long wait for the other entrees. Soups were eaten as they would have gone cold. Mains similarly random and we... had to ask for used plates snd glasses to be removed from the table. We waited far too long for kids desserts. First a gelato. Two other kids had to wait. Once again we were asking for used mains plates to be cleared. Twice we had to ask for the other two desserts, one a single scoop of vanilla ice cream the other a single chocolate brownie. They came at least ten minutes apart, perhaps 15. All adults had finished their mains long ago, the kids had finished their mains 40 mons before. There was still dirty plates and glasses on the table ss the last dessert arrived. Staff had no idea what was happening at the table. At least three perhaps four wait staff fussed about but had no idea why things were going the way they were. Cocktails were watered down with too much ice, even a jug of lemonade for the kids was half full of ice as it arrived and within a couple of minutes was mostly water. The food was mediocre, my beef cheek bourguignon was overwhelmed with rosemary. Disappointing meal definitely expensive for a poor experience. Shame really. More

Hi, Thanks for your feedback. We think we know the day you visited and unfortunately we acknowledge we weren’t at our best that day, being extremely busy with some of our most experienced staff away. These days are rare but regrettably they do happen at... More

Went for lunch on a Saturday. Service very slow. Staff pleasant but inexperienced, referred to written notes and could not pronounce many items on the menu. Food was very pedestrian, most of it left on our plate. Gained impression that most of the dishes were... precooked and assembled to order. Salads were limp, presentation basic: handful of salad, a handful of chips and two fatty pieces of what appeared to be frozen fish. Wished we had gone downstairs to Snappers take-away: a quarter of the cost and far higher quality. Alterations to the carpark made parking very difficult: cars circulating around the carpark looking for a space. Can’t see us going back anytime soon. More

Hi Stephen, thank you for your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that your experience with us did not meet our usual high standard. We encourage diners to let us know of any issues with their meals on the day so these can be rectified... More

Food and service was very underwhelming. My husband ordered a seafood basket and the crumbed prawn cutlet was cold in the middle. The battered fish was ok once the batter was removed. The lunch menu is a set two course for $55 - a high... price for very average food. Canberra has excellent alternatives. More

Thank you for your feedback. We are disappointed to hear your meals did not meet our usual high standard. We encourage diners to raise any issues with their meals on the day, allowing us to serve a replacement meal. We do hope you will visit... More

We celebrated a family members milestone birthday and were impressed by the service, food, and atmosphere of this restaurant. The set menu for lunch had many options - you can choose two or three courses. Thr food it of high quality and delicious. The waiting... staff were very attentive and professional. We really enjoyed coming to this restaurant and would recommend it for a special treat or celebration. It is not a place for kids, though. The bistro downstairs, which serves seafood, is a good young family option. More

Thank you for sharing your experience! We're glad to hear that you found the food, service, and atmosphere to be impressive. Your recommendation is much appreciated. We hope to welcome you back soon!

We were made to feel very special when celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary at the Yacht Club. We couldn't have asked for better service from the restaurant manager on the night, the food was perfect - my husband thoroughly enjoyed his oysters - and there's... a great choice of wines, including a Sav Blanc from Tassie. A last minute decision to book a table at the Yacht Club resulted in a memorable anniversary dinner. More

Thank you for your lovely review Lea. We are delighted to hear the team was able to help you celebrate, congratulations on your anniversary!

Thanks for the review, Jajaval. We hope you visit us by the lake again soon!

A great place for lunch...generous serves of food and a healthy pour for a glass of wine. Standard pub food selections mixed with some fancier dishes, the menus has something for everyone. There is plenty of seating though we always make a reservation just to... be on the safe side. More

Hi Tristan, thank you for your lovely review. We are delighted to hear you have enjoyed dining with us and look forward to your next visit.

We paid $65 for the three course menu. All three courses were absolutely delicious The staff were also very good and it’s a great setting, overlooking the lake. Highly recommend you give this place a go.

Our family group of four enjoyed meeting up over a special dinner at this fine dining restaurant. The food was fabulous ( I had fish) and the service was speedy and attentive. Lovely white tablecloth settings. However we did find it was a bit expensive.... No views as it was night. Luckily it was a special occasion. More

Restaurant review: Snapper & Co at the Canberra Yacht Club is a family-friendly venue

Karen Hardy

Ok, I'll admit that it probably wasn't fair on Snapper & Co to review it on a chilly midweek night. Since the venue at the Southern Cross Yacht Club in Yarralumla was refurbished in late 2022 , it's been humming.

Families gather on the grassy lawns; young people mingle in The Courtyard listening to live music; there's a la carte service on The Deck, an undercover outside area with a fabulous fireplace with breakfast on the weekends. It quickly became one of Canberra's top lakeside destinations.

But tonight we're the only ones here.

A few people are waiting to pick up takeaway when we first arrive at 7pm and an hour later some lads, who could be in their pyjamas, come in five minutes before the kitchen is about to close up for a late feed.

It's kind of a weird sensation but not quite as weird as you'd think. The staff are friendly but leave us alone; there's a great soundtrack playing and occasionally we find ourselves singing along; it's warm where we're tucked into a little corner table with some banquette seating along one wall.

I had actually booked a table outside on The Deck, thinking a night by the fire might be nice but my companions neglected to bring appropriate clothing so the waiter suggests we sit inside.

On The Deck our table was set with a tablecloth, with cutlery and wine glasses, and what looked like tealights, as we walk past. It looked rather pretty in the dark of night, with the fire flickering.

Crumbed calamari and chips. Picture by Elesa Kurtz

We're warned there's no a la carte service inside and we'll have to order via QR codes or at the bar. We're okay with that. More and more it seems to be the norm. But I'm unsure if I'm a fan of QR code ordering. I understand it, the logistics, the post-COVID applications of it, but hospitality is about people, and if ordering face-to-face can keep some young person in paid employment then I will continue to order at the counter for as long as I can.

It comes as no surprise seafood is the focus here. The only meat on the menu comes via a charcuterie board to share, some spicy salami on a pizza, and the burger selection offers options of wagyu, pulled pork and fried chicken.

But we're here for the seafood and decide to share a few things. And this is where the fact that it's empty becomes really hard to understand. The food was really good. OK, it's no fine-dining restaurant and the selection is somewhat limited, but why isn't the place full of families looking for an easy, and tasty, midweek dinner? Perhaps the rising cost of living is affecting people more than we'd like to think.

We start with some South Coast oysters ($23 for a half dozen) and they're plump and juicy, salty and fresh.

Next are a couple of little plates of crumbed calamari ($16.50 for five pieces) and crumbed prawns cutlets ($16.50 for four pieces) and these are a highlight. I reckon all restaurants should be judged on how they treat squid rings. How often have you bitten into a tough little rubber band surrounded by tasteless crumb? Too often for my liking. These ones are great. The panko crumb is golden and crisp and stays put on the thick tender rings.

The prawn cutlets too are full of meat and so retro. I could eat a whole basketful of these and indeed they are on the mains menu, with chips, for $20.

It's a bit hard to go past a pizza too. The gamberi is a great choice, the tomato sauce has a little chilli kick to it and the base itself is crispy around the edges and just the right thickness. There's only one garlicy prawn on each slice, but it's a nice balance.

The grilled tiger prawns with lemon butter ($34) aren't quite what I expected, served with chips and a little side salad. I kind of pictured them in a bowl with some pasta or something but nevertheless it's a generous portion (250g) and their delightfully buttery.

I wonder whether there's an economy of scale that would get some pasta dishes on the menu, or a prawn risotto or something, something that would elevate that lovely spot with a la carte service out near the fire. Still, it's a simple menu done very well.

Indeed the fish burger ($22) epitomises that. We declare it the best fish burger we've ever had. Rather than a processed patty, it's a battered piece of fish, angled edges sticking out of the soft bun, surrounded by lettuce and sliced tomato and a creamy tartare sauce.

Venue manager, Aditya Sharma, executive chef, Brad Howden and manager Miguel Enriquez. Picture by Elesa Kurtz

And what is fish without chips? The ones on offer here are thick, fluffy on the inside and golden and crisp on the outside and there's plenty on every plate.

There are a few dessert choices. We share a vanilla panna cotta ($13.50) and a salted caramel and milk chocolate mousse ($13.50). While the mousse is a little heavy and rich, the panna cotta is fresh and a delightful consistency with a depth of vanilla that hits the spot.

I'm imagining how good a summer evening with a wine and a bowl of prawn cutlets and some chips might be. Such a night seems far away as we move into a Canberra winter. Perhaps Snapper & Co is just the place to go over the next few months for a little taste of summer.

Yacht club scales up with plans for new-look snapper.

CSSC Yacht Club and Snapper cafe

CSSC Yacht Club and Snapper cafe by Lake Burley Griffin: Michelle Kroll.

The Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club in Yarralumla is about to set sail on a redevelopment of its lakeside hospitality facilities, lodging a works application for stage 1 with the National Capital Authority.

The club plans to refurbish the ground floor including Snapper, its popular fish and chips outlet, and build a new Pop-Up Kiosk Bar and Gelato Café at one end.

Its plans include external pergolas to rear paved and decking areas and the installation of a new outdoor fireplace, outdoor furniture and shade umbrellas.

A new deck will have an unimpeded view of the lake after a row of five melaleucas is removed and replaced with dryland grasses.

The trees will be replaced by five new melaleucas planted nearby.

Canberra Yacht Club refurbishment plans

A drawing of the refurbished Canberra Yacht Club. Image: Munns Sly Moore.

New glazed concertina folding doors will secure an elevated dining area.

Other plans include landscaping, new lighting, new waste and gas meter enclosures, and minor alterations to the building facade.

The proposal will expand the ground floor’s gross floor area by 73 square metres but the upper level will be unchanged.

Demolition work will include the removal of the outside temporary marquee structure.

The club restaurant and Snapper and Co have closed for the refurbishments. The restaurant is expected to reopen in early September and Snapper in October.

The plans can be viewed at the NCA’s website and submissions can be made until 5:00 pm, Friday, 9 July.

Who cares. Boycotted the CSCS for a few years now. Average club, average food. Go HELLENIC for a far better feed and variety.

Have you tried the large prawn cutlets at Hellenic…they are to die for…have them everytime..

Sick can’t wait to not go

Brilliant news, can’t wait to see the changes

They must have a lot of pull. Even people on Sydney’s upper North Shore who want to remove trees which are blocking the view of the harbour get knocked back by their local councils.

Margaret Hunt did you see this?

Wasn’t this the Club that was complaining last month about being broke and if someone put planes on the lake it would mean the end of the Club…

I think Snapper is run by the CSCC. The Yacht Club is another entity.

I hope that they are going to improve the carpark as well, it is not big enough!

Meredith Osborne nice place to have a meal

Tony Walters, yes it is lovely both the restaurant and the fish & chips, but the parking is terrible.

Those bins look full mate Tom Hunt

Joseph Rollings scissor paper rock in the rain for who has to stay back

Tom Hunt no thanks, I think you should do it, ur the best at it

Should start building a better carpark

Ric Stumpf they are doing some sort of carpark upgrade work at the moment.

Such potential!

canberra yacht club the deck

A refreshed Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club opens on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin this week, with its much-loved fish and chip shop, Snapper & Co, set to reopen in October. Timed to coincide with the club’s 50th anniversary, the new club fitout features concertina folding doors that lead out onto the refurbished elevated dining area where diners can enjoy a refreshed menu with stunning lakeside views.

The new deck has an unimpeded view of the lake after a row of five melaleucas was removed and replaced with dryland grasses. Five new trees will be grown nearby.

“While we will retain the magic of that casual experience in our courtyard and on the lawns of the lake, the refurbishment will deliver more opportunities for varied audiences, occasions and celebrations,” CEO Ian Mackay said.

“I envision people coming for a long, lazy afternoon on The Deck where they can enjoy full a la carte service experience, sip on an Aperol Spritz and listen to live music, while families can still picnic and kick a ball beside the lake.

“The addition of indoor dining also means cold, windy or rainy weather doesn’t need to spoil plans.”

Other plans include landscaping, new lighting, new waste and gas meter enclosures, and minor alterations to the building facade.

The plans for Snapper & Co include a new pop-up kiosk and gelato bar, external pergolas to the rear paved and decking areas and the installation of a new outdoor fireplace, outdoor furniture and shade umbrellas.

“Fresh fish and chips in a family-friendly environment at one of Canberra’s best locations; that’s our core promise, which we will absolutely continue to deliver,” Mackay said.

Canberra favourite snapper & co. has reopened with a fancy new look, and give us all the fish and chips, please..

When Canberra’s much-loved lakeside destination Snapper & Co. closed in May for revelopment, it promised to return bigger and better in spring. Well, it’s now open, and we can confirm it has ticked all the boxes.

The downstairs area of the Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club at Yarralumla now features The Deck at Snapper & Co.—boasting glorious lake views, the new indoor dining space is also La Niña-friendly.

But if the open air is your jam, Snapper & Co.’s existing courtyard area has also been given a makeover, featuring the Container Bar, a gelato bar, loads of seating, a casual dining menu and unrivalled views. As well as Snapper & Co’s famed fresh fish and chips, an expanded menu also boasts burgers, salads, tasting platters and more.

Ian Mackay, Chief Executive Officer of the Canberra Southern Cross Club, which owns and operates Snapper & Co., says he’s excited to see the ambitious redevelopment come to life.

“Snapper & Co. has long been a favourite location to live it up, lakeside. Now we’re giving locals and visitors to Canberra more ways to enjoy it, with enhanced spaces, a diverse menu, and live music every weekend.”

Situated on the site of the old Lakeside Marquee, The Deck at Snapper & Co. will offer an alfresco full-service dining space taking advantage of the beauty of the lakeside location. The elegant but casual space has been designed to be enjoyed all year round.

On weekends, Snapper & Co. will also offer a breakfast service as well as lunch and dinner.

“We’re pleased to offer weekend breakfast with the opening of The Deck at Snapper & Co. Our breakfast menu caters for all tastes – ranging from a light fruit salad and Paleo Granola to Belgian Waffles and Snapper & Co’s Big Breakfast,” says Ian.

But it’s not just views and food. There’ll also be live local tunes every weekend.

“In line with our commitment to support local, we’re proud to announce we’ll be featuring live local music every Friday evening, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons over the spring and summer periods. We’re looking forward to once again being Canberra’s favourite lakeside destination,” says Ian.

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.
