Cape Coral is a vibrant, sun-soaked haven of natural beauty, and Yacht Club Public Beach is its crown jewel. Found on the southern outskirts of the city limits, visitors are greeted with powdery white sand and a blissful wave-lapped shoreline that stretches for miles.

Yacht Club Beach, located on the Caloosahatchee River offers more than just breathtaking views – it’s also home to an array of activities and amenities that will make your visit even more enjoyable. From lounging in the sun on a beach chair or swing, to trying out some water sports such as jet skiing or paddle boarding, there’s something for everyone here! The beach also has facilities like changing rooms and restrooms, plus a restaurant called The Boathouse that makes for a great lunch spot if you don't want to bring a picnic lunch after a long morning on the sand.  The Boathouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner right at the beach.  It's so nice to sit outside in the sun and see the views of Yacht Club Public Beach and the river.  Live music is played on weekends.

The Boathouse

Even though our beach is small, it's perfect for families, and we don't have problems with partying spring-breakers, which is nice during March and April.

There's plenty of soft white sand and sunshine to please everyone. The beach is only a 15-minute drive from most of the Cape and parking is free.   Walk on the fishing pier, pack the beach toys, and bring a picnic to enjoy on the shoreline or a complete the day with a beautiful sunset and an evening of star-gazing.

When I homeschooled, we would whoop it up a bit ... we'd grab our books, bikinis, beach gear, and hit the sand!

Kids will love the shaded playground when taking a break from sand and swimming.

The beach's amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, public boat ramp and convenient parking lot, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all.

It's fun to go to the Sunset Celebration, which happens the first Wednesday of the month from 4-7PM or 5-8PM,  depending on Daylight Savings, October - June.

Cape Coral City Council approves ‘coastal’ design for yacht club center

Rendering of Cape Coral Yacht Club design

Cape Coral City Council chose a coastal vernacular, Key West design for the future Cape Coral Yacht Club at a Committee of the Whole meeting March 13.

The first design, which was chosen in a 5-3 vote, was described as “a very accommodating, welcoming feel” by John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors. “It’s kind of a coastal vernacular feel, but different than the existing yacht club building,” he said.

the yacht club cape coral

Council members Jessica Cosden, Bill Steinke and Rob Welsh voted for the second design, which was similar to the first but incorporated more aspects of the original yacht club building. This option was described as having more of a stone base, mid-century feel with exposed, heavy timber.

“This is an exciting option,” Bryant said. “There’s a lot of design material to work with. They are different buildings. The existing Yacht Club, it’s about a 10,000-square-foot building. We’re now looking at more of a 40,000- to 50,000-square-foot building.”

The third design option was more contemporary and not even considered by Council.

Aside from the design of the building, the site plan also was slightly modified. James Pankonin with Kimley-Horn and Associates discussed the modifications made, including combining the beach and pool restrooms into one building and moving a pump equipment building to another location on-site.

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said there is no price estimate for the project at this time. “We haven’t discussed that at this point,” he said. “It’ll really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods.”

The price of the project is expected to have a rough estimate when engineering design reaches roughly 30% completion.

There will be two upcoming public meetings about the future yacht club scheduled April 2 and May 7.

Pankonin and Bryant will then return to Council for the May 13 Committee of the Whole meeting to summarize the public input received.

Here's what will be preserved in the new Cape Coral Yacht Club building

The Cape Coral City Council will preserve and recreate a few aspects of the Yacht Club ballroom building into a new development based on a volunteer group's suggestions.

There were four recommendations on what should be preserved: Interior ceiling beams, stonework, fountain, and the front glass doors with the Yacht Club written on them.

City Council decided this week that the front doors will be used in the final development, but the other recommended pieces will be recreated or incorporated as aesthetics only.

"To me, the concept is more important than the physical material you are trying to save," Mayor John Gunter said.

The city of Cape Coral is eyeing an early 2024 date for the complete demolition of the Yacht Club's facilities, which could cost up to $1 million.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park is the city's premier gemstone, but Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, devastated the area on Sept. 28, leading to the park's closure and community contention on what will happen with the property.

Previous discussions estimated that it  could take years to repair the Yacht club and as much as $100 million to renovate the entire area. The city will then provide the council with finance options, possibly going the route of using bonds  as previously discussed.

Previous coverage Cape Coral stakeholder groups tours the Yacht Club to determine what will be saved

Related Cape Coral Yacht Club demolitions and preservation could cost up to $1 million.

Stakeholders Group

Approximately 1,400 residents responded to join the stakeholder group that made the recommendations on what to preserve. Twelve residents were chosen randomly, while the city chose an additional two, one representative for the historical society and one for the youth council.

The group was tasked with deciding what elements of the Yacht Club Ballroom building should be preserved and incorporated into a new building meaningfully.

The demolition of the Yacht Club's existing building has been contentious as residents and officials are mixed on the council's decision to take a "clean slate" approach in January to renovate the area and its facilities after Hurricane Ian paused the initial renovation plans.

The park contains the main ballroom, Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, a pool, a pier, and a beach; all of which will be affected by the upcoming renovations.

Despite the opposition, the council approved an amended contract with Kimley Horn in June.

James Pankonin, a landscape architect and urban designer with Kimley Horn, presented the information.

These were the items considered for preservation:

Councilmembers discussion

Councilmember Tom Hayden, who is the only member against the demolition, said the recommendations made sense.

"I don't think there are any big surprises in what the group saw and may want to incorporate into the new design," Hayden said.

He wanted the fireplace made of stonework and the fountain to either be recreated or used in some fashion.

Hayden also recommended dedicating a room to the old Yacht Club building filled with memorabilia and historical antiques and something dedicated to the original space of the ballroom.

"I think it would be nice, somewhere outside, to have a plaque near where the structure is that says that this was the site of the original Yacht Club," Hayden said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he liked the fountain and wanted the plaque attached to it, which is dedicated to an employee's service, saved.

Gunter said he wanted to prioritize saving many of these recommendations through concept if the physical material proves too difficult to preserve.

He said from his experience dealing with fireplaces, the materials tend to crumble when trying to remove them. He extends the same feeling to the beams and fountain.

"If we can grab a small section, great, but if we can't, that's okay too."

Although he was fully in support of keeping the glass door and incorporating them as doors into the room Hayden recommended.

Councilmember Steinke echoed the mayor's sentiments. He recommended commissioning an artist to make items out of the materials, which will go to benefit the Cape Coral Museum of History.

Councilmember Patty Cummings liked the suggestions and wanted a plaque that tells the story of why the Yacht Club was changed with a mention of Hurricane Ian.

On the beams, councilmember Jessica Cosden wanted the city to preserve and use the beams if possible.

Councilmember Dan Sheppard said he didn't want to limit the potential designs of the area, and he'd rather not see a room dedicated to the old Yacht Club.

He said a local artist can instead use the material to create art like a history wall with history text.

"I'm more for that than try to design a building with a room that I don't think a lot of people are going to use," Sheppard said.

Councilmember Keith Long also agreed with the idea of preserving and avoiding big costs. He also wants to see a dedicated room in the new building.

Toward the end of the discussion, Hayden became exasperated by the lack of support from the rest of the council for preserving the original pieces.

"I don't want to look at this as some sort of effort with smoke and mirrors where we just decided we needed to do this just to get their input to cover ourselves and be proud that we did it," Hayden said. "There's no reason to do these groups if we don't do what they say."

Welsh and Cummings countered and brought up issues with logistics and cost when speaking on the beams.

"I'm not for spending the extra money to remove them," Cummings said. "We can go and try to save what we can once, and I hate to use the word but, when it's all over to go in and grab some scraps and pieces, and I'm in agreement, and hire an artist to put something together."

Cape Coral city leaders revealed what they are calling "the final master plan for the Cape Coral Yacht Club" at Wednesday's Committee of the Whole meeting.

The Yacht Club has sat fenced up ever since Hurricane Ian destroyed the ballroom and pier.

According to the plan, the new Yacht club will have an expanded beach, new restaurant, a resort-style pool with lanes and more. For the link to the whole plan, click here .

To keep up with our ever-growing city, there will also be nearly 900 parking spaces. That includes 158 for boats and 596 for cars. To fit that much parking, they need to build a 4-story parking garage in place of the pickleball and tennis courts.

Ron Austin from the Southwest Florida Yacht Club also spoke at Wednesday's city council meeting. He is asking the city if the new community center could be his club's new permanent home.

"We have 400 miles of canals in Cape Coral. We have a lot of boats. Thousands of boats. And without that would be a great thing for the citizens to have a yacht club to be in." Austin said.

Council members said they understand the public's frustration with how long this is taking. They are frustrated too, but they need to get a lot of state and federal permits approved to take on a project this size.

NBC2 asked the city how long this would all take. They sent the following response:

"The Yacht Club Master Plan will come before the council for approval at a future meeting. A timeline for this will be developed in the next few weeks.

Once the council receives and approves the final design and associated fees, the project will move into the design phase.

We anticipate completion within 3-4 years, but this is contingent on federal and state permits."

Larger design proposed for Yacht Club rebuild

By meghan bradbury - | mar 12, 2024.

the yacht club cape coral

Revised plans for the Cape Coral Yacht Club rebuild now call for a much-larger community center with a whole new design and a four-story parking garage.

Cape Coral City Council will discuss the latest rendition of the Yacht Club masterplan at a workshop Wednesday morning.

The revised Community Center floor plan now includes a total of 47,000 square feet, with the majority being on the first floor for 27,250 square feet and the remainder, 19,750, spread out on the second floor. The prior square footage was 37,000 square feet – 20,000 square feet on the first floor, and 17,000 square feet on the second.

The largest space will be the multipurpose hall, 4,751 square feet on the first floor. Other areas are to include two medium and large meeting rooms, one small meeting room, history room, storage, retail concession, administration, foyer, receiving and loading and restrooms.

The second floor will also have meeting space, four small and two medium spaces, restrooms, kitchen, balcony, foyer and a 4,982-square-foot area to be called the ballroom, the name of the main community room in the historic building to be torn down and replaced.

the yacht club cape coral

The revised site plan includes a pool restroom near the riverfront beach, service access, pool equipment and lifeguard building and a pool entry station.

The presentation to be made by staff also includes three design options for the Community Center.

Also on the agenda:

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter expansion project is also slated for discussion during the workshop. The expansion includes a two-story building – 19,797 square feet – on their allocated 4.2-acres near Sun Splash Family Waterpark. The first floor will be comprised of 16,789 square feet and 3,008 square feet on the second floor.

The building would house kennels, cat rooms, adoption area, offices, laundry, storage and a multi-purpose room for events, training, and classes, as well as camp activities, school trips and education.

the yacht club cape coral

There would also be an additional 48 parking spaces for total of 93.

The current building would be used to expand the low-cost veterinary clinic and the current kennels would become dog intake/quarantine only.

The animal shelter also is requesting the city to allow them to add an adjacent city-owned parcel — .339 acres to increase their parcel to 4.53 acres, which would be used for an animal play area and additional training.

According to the presentation, the appraised value currently for the 4.2 acres is $595,000. That would increase to $645,000 for the 4.53 acres.

The estimated fee for the expansion project is $64,747.38.

The City Council workshop will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, in City Council chambers, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. The meeting is open to the public.

Cape Coral aiming to reopen the Yacht Club beach area by Veterans Day

the yacht club cape coral

After a year-long closure because of Hurricane Ian, Cape Coral officials say they hope to open the Yacht Club Community Park's beach in the next 10 days.

Here's what you need to know.

When is the beach opening?

Cape Coral Spokesperson Melissa Mickey said the Yacht Club beach is to reopen in mid-November.

A city news release announced a news conference on Nov. 9, for the opening Nov. 10.

"We know there's a lot of work ahead with the Yacht Club, but we thought it was important at least for the residents to get the beach reopened," Councilmember Tom Hayden said "Which is still the plan at least so it would give the community, I think, a little bit of normalization that the club is there for use, at least the beach part of it."

Background for closure

The city had planned to close the area for two years for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms.

The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.

Then Hurricane Ian struck on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying plans, and shuttering the beach.

What work is being done?

Cape Coral announced it received the OK to move forward with beach nourishment at the Yacht Club last week, and has begun the process.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection also approved sand renourishment permits for the beach.

Workers with heavy machinery combed through the beach Tuesday morning, adding sand in areas that are lacking.

Temporary restrooms will be delivered to the area; the city removed the existing bathrooms in September.

Once all the conditions have been satisfied, the temporary perimeter fence at the beach will be removed.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Boat Ramp remains closed.

What's open?

While the main Yacht Club Ballroom building is closed, alongside the surrounding buildings and amenities, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Restaurant is open.

The restaurant opened in July and, along with it, the surrounding parking lot.

What about the rest of the Yacht Club?

The city also plans to adjust the original renovation plans, which could include a two-story ballroom, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage and restaurant.

Many residents opposed this plan and, despite strong opposition, the city intends to move forward  with a complete demolition by early 2024.

Kimley-Horn will present the Yacht Club master plan and concepts from earlier this year to the city council on Nov. 8.

In advance of the opening, Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter, District 1 Councilmember Bill Steinke, and City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn will discuss the reopening of the Yacht Club Community Park Beach area at noon on Nov. 9.

January flooding prompts road work in Cape Coral to tune of $850,000

Editor's note: Cape Coral spokesperson clarified that the work at 3402 SE 10th Place is near completion and expected to be completed by the end of this week, the work at 4602 SE 6 th Avenue will begin next week, and the work at 420 Tudor Drive will begin after work at 4602 location is completed, about 2 weeks from now.

Cape Coral is spending more than $850,000 to replace pipes, structures, and surface treatments across the city that were heavily affected by rain earlier this year.

The funding resolutions are scheduled to be voted on and approved at Wednesday's regular meeting as they are on the consent agenda, which is approved usually without discussion unless pulled.

Here's what we know:

January rain

On January 15, Cape Coral experienced unprecedented rainfall of as much as 10 inches by a line of heavy thunderstorms.

Roads flooded throughout the city.

The event stressed the most of the city's stormwater systems.

"This surge caused the sudden failure of many weak points in aging infrastructure across the city," the resolution states.

More Cape Coral news Demolition of Cape Coral's Yacht Club slated for April will cost almost $1 million

Key areas identified

These are the locations that have been solicited to contractors for rapid work:

  • 1323 NE Pine Island Lane: $129,800.
  • 1107 SE 16th Place: $106,700.
  • 3402 SE 10th Place: $197,670.
  • 4602 SE 6th Avenue: $280,263.26.
  • 420 Tudor Drive: $135,646.50.

Who is doing the work?

YG Construction, Inc., a North Fort Myers contractor, will do the work at 1323 NE Pine Island Lane and 1107 SE 16th Place.

The contractor will repair sinkholes at the two locations.

Southwest Utility Systems, a Fort Myers-based utility contractor, will handle 3402 SE 10th Place, 4602 SE 6th Avenue, and 420 Tudor Drive.

That work includes replacing drainage, pipes, and asphalt and base rock restoration.

Where will the money come from?

Under Cape Coral's code of ordinances , emergency purchases can be made by the procurement manager when there exists a threat to public health, welfare, and safety.

However, emergency purchases of more than $100,000 must be approved by the city council before or as soon as possible after the purchase.

Once approved, work will begin shortly. No timeline for when the contractors will be finished.

The funds for the expenses will come from the stormwater fund/operations.
