Grenada Prison Escapees Are Charged With Murder of American Couple

The couple, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada.

A catamaran with the name “Simplicity” written on its hull sits on blue water on a sunny day. It is flying the American flag.

By Aimee Ortiz

Three men who had escaped from a prison in Grenada and were accused of hijacking an American couple’s yacht to flee have been charged with their murder, the police said on Thursday.

The couple, Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathy Brandel, 71, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada . They had been spending the winter cruising in the Caribbean in their catamaran called Simplicity, which was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Feb. 21.

There was no indication in the latest police statement that the bodies of the couple had been recovered as of Thursday.

Trevon Robertson, 23; Atiba Stanisclaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30, face two counts of “capital murder by intentionally causing the death of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

The authorities from police forces in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have given different ages and name spellings for the escapees.

The men were also charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping; Mr. Stanisclaus is also facing a rape charge, the police said, but no details were offered on those accusations. The three men made their first court appearance on Thursday, and are due back on March 27. The Royal Grenada Police Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The police had said in a statement released on Feb. 22 that three men who escaped from a prison in Grenada on Feb. 18 and made their way to St. Vincent using a yacht that had been docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

The prisoners were recaptured on Feb. 21, the same day that the couple’s yacht was found. At the time, the police said they were “currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process.”

At a news conference on Feb. 26 , Commissioner Don McKenzie of the Royal Grenada Police Force that “information suggests that, while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants.”

During a Feb. 26 news conference , Junior Simmons, superintendent of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, said the joint investigation into the disappearance with Grenada police was ongoing, and he said the couple was presumed dead.

The investigation revealed that while sailing from Grenada, “the suspects committed several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple,” he said.

The couple, who were married for 27 years, were “veteran cruisers,” according to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , a nonprofit that brings together a community of sailors engaged in long-distance cruising on their boats. The couple were longtime members, the organization said in a statement, and “they both contributed to building the S.D.S.A.”

In a joint family statement posted on the association’s website on Feb. 27, Nick Buro, the son of Ms. Brandel, and Bryan Hendry, the son of Mr. Hendry, said that “if we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of,” the message said. “Sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family — that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.”

Terms & Conditions By docking a boat at Cape Charles Harbor, a vessel owner (the Owner) automatically agrees to the terms & conditions hereby disclosed by Cape Charles Marine Services Inc. (the Yard). This agreement is between Cape Charles Marine Services Inc. (the Yard/CCMS) and the vessel owner (the Owner). By this agreement, CCMS agrees to permit the Owner to dock the above-named vessel at the Yard for the period indicated. Payment for transient vessels is due on arriving at the Yard. Payments for monthly dockage contracts are due by the first day of each month. Reservations require a one-night dockage fee deposit. Cancellation of your reservation is required at least 48 hours in advance. If you cancel within less than 48 hours of your arrival, the one-night dockage fee is non-refundable. “No shows” will be billed the full amount of their reservations. The Owner warrants that adequate hull insurance (inclusive of its equipment and related components) to protect the Owner’s interest and those of any and all parties with a financial interest in the vessel is in force at the time of signing, and the primary risk of loss shall be with The Owner. The Owner is responsible for carrying liability (P&I, including crew coverage as warranted) insurance on the vessel. The Yard requires the Owner’s name and telephone number to be marked on each dinghy kept at the Yard. The Owner agrees to allow the Yard at its sole discretion to take whatever actions it deems appropriate to attempt to safeguard the vessel in the case of threatened or occurring natural events that may place the vessel in peril, and to indemnify and hold harmless the Yard, its officers, directors, employees, and agents for any damage or loss that results therefrom. The Owner agrees to pay for extraordinary expenses incurred by the Yard while fulfilling this portion of the agreement. The Owner is responsible for his/her vessel. The Owner agrees not to hold the Yard liable for any damages caused by weather, other vessels, Harbor visitors, or owner neglect. The Owner is liable for any damage to the Harbor or Yard property or other vessels caused by the Owner’s vessel. The Owner must maintain his/her vessel in operating, seaworthy condition. Derelict, leaking, or sinking vessels must be removed from the Harbor. If the Owner does not remove an inoperable vessel, the vessel will be removed at the Owner’s expense and the Owner’s right to dockage will be discontinued. If the Owner sells his/her vessel, dockage does not convey to the new Owner. CCMS may grant a short period of time for a new Owner to move the vessel out of the Harbor. If the vessel is not moved promptly, CCMS reserves the right to haul the vessel at the Owner’s expense and/or bill the Owner at the nightly rate until the slip is relinquished. The Yard offers long-term dockage on a first-come, first-serve basis. Following the summer season, the Owner has first right of refusal for the slip the next season. If the Owner relinquishes the slip, CCMS will offer the slip to the next Owner on its waiting list. CCMS allows a limited number of live-aboards on a case-by-case basis. Payment for monthly dockage is due on the first day of the month. A 1.5% service fee is applied to all credit card transactions. Cash and checks are welcomed with no additional fees. Owner may not “loan out” his/her slip to other vessels without written permission from CCMS. No “Airbnb” or short-term rentals may be operated out of the Town Harbor Marina. CCMS may end this dockage agreement at any time and without cause by providing a 30-day notice to Owner.

Didn't believe we still have such wonderful people. Captain Dash and his co-captain are amongst the very best. Good service, friendly, timely, and most importantly, people Centered. My wife, kids, and I enjoyed riding with this team and we will always wish to ride with them.

Nicki September, 2023

My friends and I had THE BEST time boating with AJ’s team. They were all so accommodating, friendly and eager to ensure we had a great time. The communication from booking to boating was seamless and thorough. AJ was so responsive and helpful. I would 100% recommend anyone to book with them, they will go above and beyond to make sure you have an amazing time!

Tiana August, 2022

I was hesitant booking a boat through this platform, until Troy instantly responded to any and all of my questions. Not only was the service prior to departure exceptional, the boat ride itself has left us wanting more. Every time we need a boat in DC we will be booking with Troy. He has my highest recommendation, he also went out of his way and provided cups, ice, and a bluetooth speaker. We will be back!

kate July, 2022

Troy’s boat was clean, spacious, exactly as listed, and such good value! He was extremely accommodating, a great host, and made our experience worthwhile. We would absolutely choose Troy again in the future. If you’re on the fence about choosing a boat — pick this one! You won’t regret it.

Jessica March, 2022

This has to be one of the best charters I have ever been on! Though the weather wasn’t the best (a little windy😫) … our captain did not skip a beat. He made us feel super comfortable and safe the entire time. Everything was very clean and organized. Definitely a vibe… chilled music… good food …and strong drinks 😂… we will be back!

Deanna July, 2023

Our group had the most amazing early evening trip! We went swimming, stopped for drinks and had the best day of summer so far! DuShawn and Carla took great care of us and cruising the bay at 4 pm was so peaceful, relaxing and the perfect temperature! It would be hard to top the fun we had especially crashing a 50th birthday party at the Rumor Reel! We all can’t wait to go out with DuShawn again!!

Two Americans are presumed dead after they vanished from their yacht in Grenada , leaving behind evidence of a bloody struggle, police in nearby St. Vincent and the Grenadines said Monday.

While loved ones of Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry are hopeful that the American retirees and sailing enthusiasts could still turn up alive, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Superintendent Junior Simmons offered a more somber assessment.

"Based on the investigation thus far, it is presumed that Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are deceased," Simmons said in a video statement Monday afternoon .

Hours earlier, police in Grenada said there's still hope to find the couple.

But Royal Grenada Police Commissioner Don McKenzie also said he's offering “condolences” to the family of the two American boaters, who were most likely “disposed of” at sea by escaped prisoners. McKenzie said there's a “low probability” Brandel and Henry might be alive.

Three accused criminals escaped from jail on Feb. 18 before they "commandeered" the couple's boat, called Simplicity, and headed north, McKenzie said. Police have said the escapees boarded the boat while it was docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

"They headed to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants," McKenzie told reporters.

Asked whether investigators have an idea where the "missing" Americans might be, McKenzie flat-out said, "No."

"We have nothing conclusive to say that the individuals are dead," he added. "We still hold out hope that, in spite of what might be a low probability, they will turn up alive somewhere, that they're alive."

Simmons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines left little doubt of his opinion in the probe “into the disappearance and presumed death of two United States citizens ... Ralph Hendry and his common law wife Kathy Brandel.”

In an interview that aired Monday on NBC Nightly News, Rob Maher, a friend of the couple who acted as their emergency contact, said that the situation was “like a bad Hollywood movie.”

“It’s hard to think of their last moments with the idea that they might have been thrown overboard alive. It’s difficult to conceive for a friend,” he added.

Couple's sons are in the Caribbean

The couple’s sons called the pair’s disappearance “the rarest of the rare occurrences.”

Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, and Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, told NBC Washington that they first learned the couple were missing after U.S. consular officials in Barbados contacted them.

A good Samaritan who found the pair’s abandoned boat contacted the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , whose flag was flying on the mast, and word made it to the two sons, too.

They said they were told the couple vanished after three men escaped from police custody Feb. 18 and boarded their boat in Grenada the next day, Buro said.

Buro said they were told an “altercation of violence took place" on the boat, adding that there was evidence of the violence and that the couple’s possessions were "strewn around all over." Items had also been stolen.

McKenzie said, "What I can say to the family is my condolences and we are still hoping for what I consider a positive outcome, which is we still have the hope that our worst-case scenario will not be a reality."

The scene on the couple's boat was "consistent with signs of violence," Simmons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines said.

"Several items were strewn on the deck and in the cabin, and a red substance that resembled blood was seen on board," he said. "There was no discovery of bodies on board the yacht."

The escapees were caught by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday and are in custody there, according to Buro and officials.

Police told Buro that they have questioned the suspects multiple times, and he said the family expects charges soon.

Buro and Hendry are in the Caribbean and have been speaking with authorities, including the St. Vincent and the Grenadines police and coast guard, and they expressed their appreciation.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said it is aware of the reports involving two citizens missing in the vicinity of Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines but did not identify the couple. The official added that U.S. authorities are coordinating with local law enforcement officials as they carry out their search efforts.

“We are monitoring the situation and seeking additional information,” the spokesperson said. “The Department of State has no higher priority than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad. We stand ready to provide appropriate assistance to U.S. citizens in need and to their families.”

Life on the water

The couple met in Virginia and have been married for 27 years. They raised the boys together in the state, where they lived until 2013, selling their home in Alexandria to trade it in for Simplicity and life on the water.

"They wanted to see the world. They wanted to experience life. They wanted to see what the world had to offer outside of their small window of living in one place and being mobile and being able to have a different adventure every day — that’s like the definition of living," Buro said.

Buro said that the family has always been close and that they talk often. He considers Ralph Hendry his father and Bryan Hendry his brother, and he said he knows Hendry feels the same way about him and Brandel.

The couple “lived with a sense of wonder and love,” Hendry said.

“They loved immersing themselves in different cultures and meeting people and spreading their love wherever they could,” he said.

Buro echoed his stepbrother’s sentiments.

“You’ll never meet more beautiful people than Kathy and Ralph,” Buro said. “They were there for people when they needed it most, and I just, they’re my inspiration for everything, and I can’t express how much I love them, and I know everybody else who knows them feels the same way.”

The couple had been planning the trip down to Grenada — their first to the Caribbean island — for “years and years and years, training themselves, preparing the boat, preparing themselves ... to make the trip,” Hendry said.

It was going to be a “very long trip, not to be taken lightly,” and the couple felt they had “prepared themselves adequately,” Hendry said.

They made the voyage down with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association, and everyone arrived safely, Buro said.

Bob Osborn, the association's president, said the situation was upsetting and tragic.

“In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this,” he said in a statement.

Yacht 'was their home'

Buro thinks his mother and stepfather could still be alive.

“We still think there’s a chance that they’re out there," he said. Because the investigation continues and St. Vincent and the Grenadines police were "quick to apprehend the suspects and are searching," there is hope.

"We still hope that they are OK and that we can bring them back," Buro said.

He said that the entire situation "is something that is completely unexpected" and that they are trying to understand the "senseless act of violence against two people that were just living their lives in their home."

Buro said the couple worked hard on their dream and had become seasoned sailors. Simplicity “was their home,” he said.

He said the couple’s top priorities were always safety and security, “to make sure everything they did was safe and was going to keep them safe.”

“To have that turn out in a way where something out of their control took that away from them is what’s so horrific about this and so sad, because they were just, this is just something that they’ve always wanted to do, and they did it, and it’s just, it breaks our hearts,” Buro said.

Murder charges for men accused of hijacking couple’s yacht in Caribbean

virginia boat and yacht

Three men who escaped from a jail in Grenada and allegedly hijacked the catamaran of a Virginia couple sailing in the Caribbean in February have been charged with counts including capital murder and rape, authorities in Grenada announced Thursday.

The escapees likely threw retirees Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathleen Brandel, 70, off their boat as the 48-foot vessel sailed from Grenada to the neighboring nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where the men were recaptured, authorities said previously.

A spokesman for the Royal Grenada Police Force said Thursday that the couples’ bodies have not been recovered and the search continues in the roughly 100-mile stretch of sea between the two Caribbean nations.

The three Grenadian men, Ron Mitchell, 30; Atiba Stanislaus, 25; and Trevon Robertson, 23, are each facing two counts of capital murder, kidnapping, escaping custody and other offenses. In addition, Stanislaus is facing one count of rape.

The three made their first court appearances Thursday and are being held in a Grenadian prison. They will have their next court appearance on Mar. 27. An attorney for the men could not be reached for comment.

Police in Grenada did not offer additional details about the charges. Relatives of Hendry and Brandel did not respond to a request for comment.

Authorities had said previously the three men escaped from a Grenadian jail on Feb. 18 after their arrests on various charges. Grenadian police said they have launched an internal investigation of how the men were able to escape.

After fleeing the jail, the men made their way to the couple’s catamaran, Simplicity, which was moored on a beach at the island nation. The couple was on board.

Junior Simmons, superintendent of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, said at a news conference in late February that “the suspects committed several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple.” Don McKenzie, commissioner of the Grenada force, said at a separate news conference that it is believed the suspects “disposed of the occupants” on their way to St. Vincent.

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association, of which the couple were members, said in a statement that a sailor contacted the group on Feb. 21 to report the Simplicity was moored and abandoned off the south coast of St. Vincent. The skipper also notified the coast guard and police were alerted in turn.

After a manhunt, St. Vincent police recaptured the escapees the same day the boat was discovered.

The couple had sailed from Hampton, Va., to Antigua for a Salty Dawg boat rally in November and were spending the rest of the winter sailing in the eastern part of the Caribbean, according to the group. The couple lived on the boat and were seasoned sailors. Brandel had recently become a grandmother, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser for the couple’s family.

Simmons said that when investigators boarded the vessel, they found items strewn on the deck and in the cabin, and a red substance that appeared to be blood. The GoFundMe campaign organizer wrote that the catamaran had “chilling evidence of a violent struggle.”

Simmons said the escapees were cooperating with the investigation and pleaded guilty to immigration violations in a St. Vincent court. The three were extradited back to Grenada on Monday.

Nick Buro, a son of Brandel’s, and Bryan Hendry, a son of Hendry’s, said in a joint statement last month that the couple “lived a life that most of us can only dream of.”

“We live in a world that at times can be cruel, but it’s also a world of profound beauty, wonder, adventure, love, compassion, caring, and faith,” the statement said. “Our parents encompassed all those values and so much more. If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

The statement said the couple made friends with “everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family.”

Robert Osborn, president of Salty Dawg, said the couple was on their first boat rally in Antigua with the group. He said the journey from the United States is not easy and that the sailors form a brotherhood on the way. He said the loss of the couple was a blow.

“It was like losing a member of the family,” Osborn said.

Missing Virginia couple allegedly hijacked on yacht in Grenada were likely thrown overboard, police say

virginia boat and yacht

The American couple allegedly hijacked by escaped prisoners while on their yacht in Grenada last week were likely thrown overboard, Royal Grenada Police Force Commissioner Don McKenzie said during a news conference Monday.

The pair is “presumed dead,” according to a separate Monday statement from the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

According to that statement, three suspects, who escaped a prison in Grenada before allegedly hijacking the yacht and sailing off to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, committed “several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple” while sailing. When authorities eventually recovered the yacht, the scene was “consistent with signs of violence,” the police force said.

“Several items were strewn on the deck and in the cabin and a red substance that resembled blood was seen on board. There was no discovery of bodies on board the yacht,” that statement added.

Information suggests the escapees “disposed of the occupants” while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, about 80 miles away, McKenzie said in the news conference.

Still, police said they cannot conclusively confirm the current status or whereabouts of the couple, Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry. In spite of a “low probability,” they hope “they may turn up alive somewhere,” McKenzie said.

The grim updates come as police in the Caribbean have been investigating the disappearance of the American couple and as their family braces for the possibility “they aren’t with us” after the violent scene suggests they may have been killed.

The Virginia couple, identified by their sailing club, were living out a long-held dream of cruising the Caribbean in their sailing yacht, Simplicity. The vessel was found abandoned Wednesday off the coast of St. Vincent with the husband and wife nowhere to be found, according to the club, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association.

Police said a trio of prisoners escaped from custody in Grenada last Sunday, February 18, and were recaptured three days later. Evidence suggests the escapees hijacked the yacht and may have killed its two American occupants in St. George as they fled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement .

Police said they are in contact with the US representative in Grenada. After the capture, a five-member team was dispatched from Grenada to collaborate with St. Vincent authorities for a “complete and thorough investigation,” the commissioner said.

Possibilities of bribes or collusion among police and the three escapees will be investigated, McKenzie said. An investigation is underway to see if the escape was a “system failure” or if it “was a case that somebody did slip up,” he said.

The suspects in the hijacking – Ron Mitchell, 30; Trevon Robertson, 19; and Abita Stanislaus, 25 – were cooperating with investigators, Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force Superintendent Junior O. Simmons said. Prior to the escape, all three had been charged on suspicion of robbery with violence and Mitchell faced other charges, including rape and indecent assault, the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

The suspects went in front of a St. Vincentian judge Monday over immigration-related charges that they all pleaded guilty to, according to the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

The search and investigation related to the couple will continue, police said.

The US State Department said Friday it is “aware of these reports involving US citizens. We are monitoring the situation and seeking additional information.”

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel

‘It was their home,’ son says

Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, and Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, released a joint statement on Tuesday, remembering their parents for living with love, faith and sailing.

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family – that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts,” the statement read.

“If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

Buro and Bryan Hendry called their parents the strongest people they will ever know, saying they “strive to be even half as wonderful as them.”

“While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them,” the statement read.

The sons said they both “remain optimistic” about the ongoing search, despite how authorities found their boat.

“The boat itself was ransacked and everything was strewn about in the entire cabin, so clearly there was an altercation of some type that took place on the boat,” Buro told CNN Sunday. “We are concerned for their safety overall because it does appear that they were likely injured.”

Wednesday, the day the abandoned boat was discovered, was Brandel’s 71st birthday, Buro said. March 2 will be Ralph’s 67th birthday, his son Bryan Hendry told CNN.

Buro said his mother and stepfather were veteran boaters who had been planning the trip – their first cruise of the Caribbean – for years.

“They were super careful to be safe all the time,” Buro said. “Everywhere they went everything they did, safety was their top, top concern. So this unfortunate accident, I think, it came out of nowhere for them.”

The couple sold their home and bought Simplicity years ago, throwing themselves into an enthralling life on the water, he said.

“It was their home. Everything they had, they owned, was on that boat. It was their life,” he said. “Kathy worked her whole life and then retired. Ralph worked in financial services and continued to work from the boat. But really what they did was … choose a lifestyle that most of us would never imagine could be done. And they loved every minute of it and they saw many parts of the world and just lived a life of joy and love.”

Boat found abandoned by ‘good Samaritan’

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association said it was contacted Wednesday by a boater who spotted the Simplicity anchored and abandoned off the south coast of St. Vincent.

“The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence,” the group said . The person also contacted the coast guard, who notified St. Vincent police, the association said.

Grenada police said the escapees were recaptured the same day by the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

Ben Osborn, the sailing club’s president, offered his support to the families and said the violence was unheard of.

“This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event – our hopes and prayers are with Ralph and Kathy and the family who love them,” Osborn said in a statement . “In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this.”

Seasoned boaters receive outpouring of support

News of Brandel and Hendry’s disappearance has opened a floodgate of support from loved ones, church friends and boating community members who stepped forward willing to help, their families said.

“We want to reach out to the entire cruiser community to express our gratitude for everyone that worked to gather information from eyewitnesses and provide search and rescue support. It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible,” Buro and Bryan Hendry said in a statement shared by the sailing club.

They also asked that any boaters not affiliated with the official investigation stand down on their search efforts.

“The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches,” the statement read.

The couple also had close ties to their local Christian community, and a prayer service was held Saturday for them, Buro said.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established on behalf of Nick Buro to help fund the recovery of the yacht and the couple’s belongings, funeral costs and support.

CNN’s Sharif Paget, Abel Alvarado, Chris Boyette and Jillian Sykes contributed to this report.

Caribbean authorities say missing American couple is feared dead after 3 prisoners hijacked yacht

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – An American couple who went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada is feared dead after their catamaran yacht was hijacked by three escaped prisoners, authorities said.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Thursday that they were working on leads "that suggest" that the two occupants of the yacht – named Simplicity – may have been killed. While details on the incident remain unclear, police said preliminary information indicates that the case is likely tied to the escape of the three prisoners.

"It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens," police said, adding that the investigation was still in "its infancy stage."

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the couple as Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry in a statement . The association noted that the pair were veteran cruisers and longtime members of the association, calling them "warmhearted and capable."

"This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event," Bob Osborn, the association’s president, said in the statement. "In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this."

Hendry and Brandel were last seen on Feb. 18 and are believed to have been killed the following day near the shores of Grand Anse Beach in Grenada, according to a GoFundMe page raising money for their family. The funds raised will help cover funeral costs and recover the couple's vessel and belongings.

Missing couple's yacht found 'anchored and abandoned'

Hendry and Brandel were on their final voyage with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association when their yacht was found, "bearing chilling evidence of a violent struggle," the GoFundMe page states.

The association said it was alerted by a cruising skipper about a member's yacht, Simplicity, that was found "anchored and abandoned" off a beach on the island of St. Vincent. The association added that its live member’s tracking map showed the vessel anchored in Grenada before it moved to its last anchorage off St. Vincent.

"The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not on board and found evidence of apparent violence," the association said. The St. Vincent Coast Guard took possession of Simplicity and local police are investigating with the U.S. Embassy and the Grenada police, according to the association.

On Saturday, family members of the couple met with authorities in St. Vincent, where they were seen boarding the vessel – which was being guarded by officials, one of whom was wearing latex gloves.

Hendry's family issued a statement Saturday thanking police, local coast guards, and those who helped authorities gather information. They also asked that all those trying to conduct independent searches "stand down."

"It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible," the family said.

Incident coincided with the escape of prisoners

Authorities in Grenada are investigating what happened to the couple and said they had dispatched senior investigators and a forensic specialist to St. Vincent, where the escaped prisoners were arrested Wednesday.

According to Grenada police, preliminary information suggests that the prisoners hijacked the yacht in St. George’s in Grenada, and traveled to the nearby island of St. Vincent. The three men had escaped from their holding cell on Feb. 18, police said.

The prisoners, ages 19, 25, and 30, were arrested and charged in December with one count of robbery with violence. The eldest inmate also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police said.

Couple remembered by family, friends

According to the GoFundMe page, Hendry and Brandel were "seasoned sailors who lived on their beloved catamaran."

The pair spent their retirement sailing, the GoFundMe page states. The couple had sailed their yacht in last year's Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association said.

WPTV-Channel 5 reported that the couple spent their winters docked at a Fort Pierce, Florida, marina, according to Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmaris.

"This was their whole life. They didn't own another home, they didn't own cars, they owned Simplicity," Desmarais told WPTV . "And when you were invited onto Simplicity, you were made to feel as magical as they were and as magical as that boat was."

The couple had previously docked their catamaran at the Safe Harbor Harbortown Marina in Fort Pierce.

"They were the sweetest people," Keith Mallamo said in an email to TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network. Mallamo said he was friends with the couple when they docked their vessels at the marina in Fort Pierce.

One Christmas, Brendel baked cookies for everyone on the dock, and Hendry was always available to help his fellow sailors, Mallamo wrote.
