The Whitsundays

Glowing with beach-glamour and dripping in first-class hideaways, the group of islands known as the Whitsundays are both indulgently luxurious and stunningly beautiful.

Made up of 74 picture-perfect islands and bordered by the Great Barrier Reef, their brilliant seas and underwater delights are hard to resist.

Located just off the east coast of Queensland, Australia’s sunshine state, the Whitsunday Islands lie amongst the Coral Sea; rightly earning their place among the South Pacific’s most majestic island groups. National parks, coral cays and sublime beaches make up the majority of the landscape while wilderness retreats and hedonistic spas also have their place.

The Whitsundays are widely regarded as one of the true yachting pleasure grounds of the world with smooth waters, spectacular reefs and balmy rainforests that are just as amazing to gaze upon as they are to explore. Paired with superb deep water anchorages and five-star resorts, there is no surprise as to why this region continues to attract the yachting elite.

The region is excellent for both crewed and bareboat charters with its easy navigation, close proximity of the islands and a first-class combination of untouched natural sights and modern indulgences. Most yacht charters will often start at Hamilton Island where guests can fly in, or the small but lively boho town of Airlie Beach known as the gateway to the Whitsundays.

Both Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island boast world-class superyacht infrastructure and luxury amenities to act as a base for exploring the region. Luxury Island Resorts

The Whitsundays are truly blessed with immersive luxury experience which take superyacht charters in the region to the next level. Only eight of the islands are inhabited, with the most popular being the exclusive Hayman, the water-sports mecca of Hamilton Island and the appropriately named family favourite Daydream Island. For something a little more off-beat, sail down the Cumberland Channel to visit the lesser-known islands of Goldsmith and Tinsmith in the Sir James Smith Group.

Hamilton Island is the largest of the islands and is easily accessible for superyachts due to its fantastic marina facilities. The Qualia Resort on Hamilton Island is one of Australia’s esteemed Luxury Lodges, and is in itself a reason to visit the Whitsundays. Hamilton Island is a hive of water-based activities and opulent spas, and even has its own golf course for those keen to play a round in this paradisiacal setting. In Airlie Beach, Coral Sea Marina is also linked to its own luxury resort by the same name, which it merged with in 2019 to complete an all-encompassing offering for visiting yachts. Beaches and Diving

Diving, snorkelling, whale watching, and fishing are all there to be enjoyed in the Whitsunday Islands and it’s not uncommon to come face-to-face with turtles, sea eagles and ospreys during your journey. The soft white-sand beaches are another of the region’s biggest draw cards; perhaps the most breath-taking sandy stretch is Whitehaven Beach, coined “Heaven on Earth” by locals.

One of the most famous dive and snorkel sites in the Whitsundays is Heart Reef. This stunning coral has been aptly named after its natural formation into a heart shape, and sits in its own mesmerising reef lagoon. Throughout the Whitsundays, there are opportunities for divers and snorkelers of all levels to enjoy the wonders and colours of the reef. Gary’s Lagoon and Manta Ray Bay are both exceptional novice dive sites with abundant coral, while sites such as the Stepping Stones offer more advanced diving opportunities. Found in Bait Reef, the Stepping Stones are a unique diving experience made up of 18 flat-topped coral pinnacles lined up in a row, each rising from a depth of 15-25 metres up to one metre below the surface.

YES ! – You become the skipper. We provide a world class boat, you choose to become the skipper, you select your crew (family / friends), and you provision the vessel for the charter holiday and experience of a lifetime – In doing so you charter the boat under a Bare-Boat hire agreement and take our yachts out sailing yourself. An inspiring experience. Our Skipper Yourself Bare-Boating option, is our most popular.

The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go – Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems. After your briefing, if you are still not 100% confident, we offer additional sail training, which many of our novices pre-book to maximise their holiday enjoyment and safety.

Do I need a license to go bareboating?

No, you do not need a licence or experience. We are so excited and very committed to helping anyone new to sailing get out and onto the water. Adventure Still Lives. Cape Hillsborough National Park

Famed for its expansive beach and wildlife, a visit to the Cape Hillsborough National Park needs to be timed with sunrise or sunset. The resident wallaby population meet daily on the beach and are a sight to behold for those who have not experienced this Australian icon in their natural habitat. Cape Hillsborough is a short drive from Eungella National Park, make this visit part of an extended day trip.

Lake Proserpine

Lake Proserpine or the Proserpine Dam provides the perfect fresh water environment for watersports or barramundi fishing. Flat, calm water and a huge expansive lake is what makes Lake Proserpine popular with locals and visitors wake-boarding, jet skiing, fishing and wind surfing.

‘the monaco of the south pacific’.

Could this Tropical North Queensland harbour become a hangout for the world’s superyacht set?

Marine biologist Crystal Lacey dolphin-kicks to the depths of Mantaray Bay to point out elephant ear coral, a shapeshifting species that gracefully gathers its ruffled folds when feeding. We’re snorkelling off the northeast edge of Hook Island, the second-largest of 74 isles in the Whitsundays, where colourful fish are so profuse several collide with my mask as I’m exploring the cerulean waters.

To get here, we’ve passed teardrop-shaped Langford Island, with its elongated spit of bone-white sand; pristine Black Island, better known as Bali Hai; and Hayman, home to an exclusive resort that is one of only four currently operating in the Whitsundays.

This picturesque patch of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef was hammered by Cyclone Debbie in 2017, and still confronts the spectre of climate change. But Lacey, who leads tours via her Little Fish consultancy, is keen to demonstrate the underwater world here is not just recovering but flourishing.

“The reef is still here, it’s still very much alive and will be here for many years after we are,” she says.

We’ve arrived aboard 30m superyacht Norseman, belonging to Paul Darrouzet. The former mining magnate also owns Coral Sea Marina Resort at Airlie Beach, from where we departed earlier that morning, spirits high and champagne glasses in hand. Darrouzet says the integrated marina and resort, comprising 520 wet berths, a 77-room hotel and a bustling maritime village filled with restaurants, shops, charter companies, sailing instructors and tour operators, is the jumping-off point for most on-water tourism here.

He first came to Airlie Beach on a boys’ fishing trip when he was in his 20s. Several decades on, his ambition is to turn it into a global superyacht destination hotspot or, as he puts it, “the Monaco of the South Pacific”. The marina has 63 superyacht berths and associated concierge facilities for crewing, provisioning, repairs and more. On the day I duck in, gleaming vessels such as the 45m Gran Finale and the 35m POPS are hunkered harbourside.

Although Norseman is unavailable for hire, Darrouzet’s idea is that travellers will come to Airlie Beach to charter a similar vessel (and a skipper) from one of the businesses based at the marina to embark on some island-hopping adventures of their own.

Increasing numbers of international and Australian superyachts are visiting the Whitsundays, including the stunning De Lisle III, on which I spent time last year. They include several particularly impressive vessels over 50m in length, such as Lady E, Keri Lee III, Mischief and Royale X, which have visited Coral Sea Marina during the past two years.

It’s believed the relaxing of legislation at the end of 2019, which made it more viable for foreign-flagged vessels to charter in Australian waters, will encourage owners to abandon the seasonal “milk run” between the crowded Mediterranean and Caribbean and head Down Under.

“Here, the physical beauty is astounding, you can drink the water, eat the food, and no one shoots you,” says Darrouzet.

After a seafood lunch and a round of margaritas, we anchor off Whitsunday Island, navigating a tender into the turquoise shallows to reach Whitehaven Beach. Several members of our party slip off wedding rings and other jewellery, intent on polishing them to a high sheen in the world’s purest silica sands.

Back at the resort, I spend a few minutes weighing whether the setting sun will be best viewed from the hammock or the Jacuzzi on the balcony of my spa deluxe room. I choose the tub.

Darrouzet purchased this building, then the rundown circa-1970s Coral Sea Resort, in 2019 after first acquiring and overhauling the Abell Point Marina in 2013. Both properties were subsequently rebranded under the Coral Sea Marina Resort banner.

The resort has been extensively renovated and refurbished, with most guestrooms and apartments getting a makeover. Cabanas and a private beach have been added, a waterfront restaurant, bar and pool club launched, and the Blush Spa and Beauty Bar day spa (where I have a soothing massage) unveiled. A three-week closure in February will bring a further refresh to facilities, including the paving of the existing 25m pool with glass tiles.

I’d describe the spa deluxe rooms as schmick rather than lavish, with pale laminate flooring, serviceable lounge and kitchenette, white-tiled bathroom studded with occasional sailboat motifs and, gracing one wall, a photographic print of Heart Reef. There’s no pillow menu or even a minibar, and you’d be hard-pressed to fit two people in the tub, but superyacht enthusiasts are coming for the marina rather than the resort.

The next day I take a one-hour scenic helicopter ride from the marina out over the Whitsundays’ idyllic islands, with curves and whorls of coral structures beneath us and the horizon disappearing into the blue beyond. Our pilot drops to 500 feet and loops in two long, slow circles around to the heart-shaped coral formation that features on the wall of my room. It has inspired many marriage proposals, we’re told.

I keep my eyes on the ocean below as we head back towards the mainland. It’s too late in the season to spot whales, but the sight of a pod of dolphins cruising fills me with joy. If snorkelling offers a close-up view of the Great Barrier Reef, then flying is the wide-angle shot, revealing its beauty and its vastness.

What is the weather like in airlie beach.

Airlie Beach is a sub-tropical environment which means fine, mild weather most of the year. There is a wet season over summer which only has occasional showers. Winter in Airlie Beach doesn’t feel like winter at all, with an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.

It’s possible to sail the Whitsundays at any time of year , with each season offering its unique attractions. 

Do I need a license to charter a boat in the Whitsundays without a skipper?

The need for a license will depend on the type of boat you want to hire and where you want to go. There are several considerations when it comes to a license.

• If you want to take a self-drive boat out to the islands and Whitehaven Beach with Airlie Beach Boat Hire, you need one person to hold a valid boat license – National or International.
• Unlicensed boats can be hired through Airlie Beach Boat Hire to fish and sightsee in designated areas. Please note that if you hire a day boat without a license, you can’t go to the islands.
• If you hire a bareboat from a yacht charter company in the Whitsundays, you do not need a license or sailing qualifications.

Do I need sailing experience to go on a bareboat charter?

We do suggest that one person on your charter has some basic boating knowledge and we are required to have at least two crew members over the age of 18 on each vessel.

Our experienced staff will support you all the way, helping plan your itinerary, giving you a comprehensive briefing on how to operate your vessel and staying in regular contact over VHF radio.

If you are feeling unsure about your sailing experience or your ability to handle a boat, you can hire a sail guide for an hourly or daily rate to make sure you’re confident with skippering the boat yourself.

We also run the Whitsunday School of Sailing , which is an option for anyone wanting to brush up on their sailing knowledge or learn the basics before a charter.

How do I know what bareboat to hire?

The vessels in our fleet can accommodate up to 10 guests. You can choose a sailing yacht , a catamaran or a motor cruiser. The boat you hire will depend on your budget, availability and how many people you need to accommodate.

Where can I go on a bareboat around the Whitsundays?
