Leonardo DiCaprio jet skiing.

Billionaires, A-listers and jet setters have decamped to St. Tropez with one source telling us the French hotspot is “on fire.”

In fact, there have been several ultra-exclusive bashes vying to be the hottest ticket in the world.

Nightlife mogul Richie Akiva threw a party for Swiss bio tech billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli where we hear Drake, Leonardo DiCaprio, long time “Pussy Posse,” member Tobey Maguire and Bulls star (and Khloe Kardashian’s baby daddy) Tristan Thompson hung out with an army of models.

The St. Tropez rager, with a lavish dinner and dancing, was held at what one source described as an “epic estate” overlooking the water. Drake manned a DJ booth set up by the pool.

“Drake was on the mic all night,” says the source.

We’re told model Suede Brooks, who Drake was photographed “yacht hopping,” with on the island, was also in attendance.

Forbes estimates that Bertarelli, who owns the $150 million super yacht VAVA II, is worth a $8.5 billion .

Leonardo DiCaprio.

Page Six hears that on Saturday night there’s an invitation-only bash dubbed the Aurora Gala thrown by artist Mouna Rebiez. She’s expecting Uma Thurman, Diplo, Gerard Butler, Queen Latifah, shipping heir Stavros Niarchos and his wife Dasha Zhukova, among others. It benefits the Aurora mental health organization, which was founded by Rebiez’s kids, Henry and Souraya Chalhoub.

Luxury yacht.

Meanwhile, JC Murray, the grandson of French billionaire Tony Murray, hosted a fete in one of the largest homes in the ultra luxe gated community, Les Parcs de Saint-Tropez. The neighborhood is also home to LVMH luxury group chairman Bernard Arnault and Ritz Paris owner Mohamed al-Fayed.

And we hear rum heiress Lady Monika Bacardi threw a birthday party for 300 people on the beach at Indie Beach with guests like publicist Anna Rothschild.

Tristan Thompson on a yacht

Sienna Miller and boyfriend Oli Green , Victoria and David Beckham,  Adrien Brody and Georgina Chapman, and Sofia Richie have also been spotted out an about.

Next on the travel list for the chic set is Capri for the UNICEF gala on July 30. Jennifer Lopez, currently on her honeymoon in Paris with Ben Affleck, is slated to perform, and Akiva is expected to host an after party.

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to having a good time, and he is again living it up in Miami on a yacht owned by a Swedish billionaire.

The yacht, named Vava II, is owned by Ernesto Bertarelli and is valued at around 150 million dollars. It was the venue of a big bash on Wednesday night in Miami.

DiCaprio is single

The 48-year-old DiCaprio is single since splitting from Camila Morrone in the summer as she turned 25 in June, and he has been linked with model Gigi Hadid despite her 27 years of age being older than his usual partners.

Page Six have reported that the party in Miami that DiCaprio attended began after midnight and was in full-swing under around 5am, with Venus and Serena Williams in attendance. Other notable attendees included Jared Leto, Vito Schnabel, Reilly Opelka, Vivi Nevo and Paolo Zampoli .

The same outlet claims that there were something in the region of 100 models in attendance too.

No underwear

Page Six report that a source told them that "there were like a hundred models. I have literally never seen more models in my life, no one was 'normal' looking. It was models, models, models".

"There was a group of girls that were wearing beaded dresses with nothing underneath at all, no underwear. You could see everything," another source reportedly said.

Page Six also claim that DiCaprio was overheard chatting with Bertarelli about "saving the oceans".

That is despite a Fast Company report in 2021 highlighting that "a superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines, and pools emits about 7,020 tons of CO2 a year, according to our calculations, making it by far the worst asset to own from an environmental standpoint".

DiCaprio had been at a party on the same yacht in St. Tropez in the summer of 2022.

Just Try to Keep Leonardo DiCaprio Off a Yacht, I Dare You

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

By Kenzie Bryant

Image may contain Human Person Vehicle Transportation Yacht Aircraft Airplane and Leonardo DiCaprio

Did you have a nice little New Year’s holiday? Did you watch the whole of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City in one big gulp? Maybe you drove somewhere new since flying is so complicated these days. Off to a ski resort a few hours north as the interstate flies, hm? Spent a couple precious hours on this earth drying out cold, wet socks from the last run down the mountain, maybe? Well, that all sounds lovely, but unfortunately for mere mortals everywhere, it will never be as lovely as what Leonardo DiCaprio is up to.

Leonardo DiCaprio! He of the movies fame. You know, Titanic. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Catch Me If You Can. The Revenant. Most recently, the Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up . This guy, would you believe it, was on a yacht. Of course you believe it. This guy loves yachts . The man simply cannot get enough of them. He is like an oenophile, traversing the lands, grabbing up whatever fermented grapes Dionysus has left us down here. Like, if there is a rare and elegant wine, he’s tried it or wants to try it—but with yachts.

So this week he’s been chartering Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli ’s yacht, which is called Vava II, in St. Barts. The Vava II has its own Wikipedia page . It’s reported to cost $150 million and sleep about 50 guests and crew members, and frankly, that’s a lot for a boat! Those things are on water!

Friend and capo of the fabled Pussy Posse Lukas Haas was there, as was DiCaprio’s girlfriend, 24-year-old Camila Morrone. Per the Daily Mail , they even went shopping with the editor in chief of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, which I imagine is something like shooting hoops with LeBron James.

Before all the shopping and the lounging on deck chairs with Haas and the strolling around St. Barts, DiCaprio celebrated New Year’s on the island alongside Jeff Bezos and partner Lauren Sanchez, Drake, and yacht owner himself Bertarelli. It is where this historic photo was taken.

The party commenced with a dinner at Akiva's, then at around 1:30 a.m, it moved to Swiss billionaire Bertarelli's $150 million, 315-foot yacht, Vava II.

The ritzy island was a place to be on New Year’s Eve. A-listers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Bezos, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra, Dua Lipa, and Drake partied at the new year bash of club king Richie Akiva, Ernesto Bertarelli, and Darren Dzienciol. Around 500 guests made the cut and were invited to the lavish party. According to a Page Six report, the party commenced with a dinner at Akiva’s, then at around 1:30 a.m, it moved to Swiss billionaire Bertarelli’s $150 million 315-foot yacht, Vava II. It is said that the party went on till 9 or 10 in the morning.

The stars were treated with a performance by rapper Meek Mill and Lil Baby. During Mill’s performance, Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin and internet star Jake Paul turned DJs for the night. Meek Mill is reportedly staying on Rubin’s yacht while in town.

Bezos, who posted a pic of himself with partner Lauren Sanchez, came in late following another bash. In the viral pictures, the Amazon founder was seen wearing heart-shaped sunglasses and a colourful button-down.

Sharing some glimpses from the party on Instagram, he urged his followers to "celebrate and grow". “We had so much fun last night celebrating with a crazy disco party with family, but the new year is also a great time to take stock and focus on personal growth, renewal, rebirth, and paying careful attention to each moment of your life,” he said in the caption of the post.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

In conversation with: Ernesto Bertarelli

Whatever the outcome, the 37th edition of the America’s Cup will go down in history as the one that saw Alinghi return to the scene, this time as a challenger. The announcement had been in the air for some time but the official announcement came at the end of 2021, 11 years after that edition in which the Swiss team competed against Oracle Team USA.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

Bertarelli’s presence in the America’s Cup has been expected for years and in itself is not news. But it is also thanks to him that the process of transformation has been set in motion, giving a significant boost to the competition. In my opinion, there is a subtle thread linking Alinghi 5, the 90-foot catamaran with which Bertarelli tried in vain to defend the America’s Cup in 2010, to today’s AC 75. It could be argued that foils were not yet on the horizon at that time, but the experience gained in that edition certainly broadened the boundaries of imagination, allowing the seed to be planted for the birth of a new generation of multihulls, the AC 72, the protagonists of the 2013 edition in San Francisco.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

And today, the Alinghi/Red Bull Racing partnership looks promising, not least because of their triumph at the last Formula One World Championship. But Bertarelli has not been idle before entering the America’s Cup arena again. On the contrary, as he tells us in this exclusive interview, not only did he continue racing but he even created the TF35s, a class of latest-generation foil catamarans. Yes, because performance is one of the cornerstones of Bertarelli’s vision of sailing.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

Where did you get idea for the TF35 class? It all sprang from the experience we had built up with the D35 (Decision 35 catamaran class, ed.’s note). After 16 years of racing those boats, it was time for a change. The arrival of foils accelerated that decision. So we got together with some friends who had already been racing the D35 and decided to go for something more advanced. I think we have achieved what we set out to do. The TF35 is compact with a manageable budget. It is also unique in terms of performance like the F50s and AC75s which even foil upwind. Results-wise, it also proved its worth by winning complex races with very light breezes like the Bol d’Or.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

From a design perspective, how did you develop the TF35 formula?  The general concept is the result of our vision. Once the platform was defined, I decided to go to very highly skilled professionals, some of whom, like Luc du Bois and Dirk Kramers, had America’s Cup experience from the Alinghi days.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

Does your involvement in sailing also extend to trying to get young people involved in the sport?  I would say that has been a very natural process. After Alinghi’s victory in the America’s Cup, sailing became very popular in Switzerland. Now after over 20 years, Switzerland has a new generation of superb sailors, thanks in part to our involvement in competitive sailing.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

Do you feel the arrival of foils is playing a central role in piquing the interest of the younger generations?  Without a doubt, Anyone under 30 is now looking to foils. It couldn’t really have been any other way. They grew up sailing Moths rather than Lasers. Once you have experienced the feeling of sailing on a foiling boat, it is hard to go back. They are beginning to dominate.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

The 2024 Paris Olympics, for instance, will bring the debut of the iqFoils (foiling windsurf boards). What do you think of this?  Very simple. It’s a one-way street. The performances are unique. Speed is a pivotal factor always: that applies to sailing and other sports. Just look at the progress there has been of late in skiing to make it even more exhilarating in terms of performance. My son wanted to try out the foiling windsurf boards the second he had a chance. They deliver unparalleled emotions: an adrenaline-fuelled experience with not just speed playing a central role – you also get the experience of flying.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

What were you most struck by in the AC75s? I liked virtually everything about the last edition. I have to admit I was wrong about the class at the outset. Contrary to what I thought, they proved very competitive and the racing was really exciting. The only issue perhaps was that there wasn’t enough time to fully appreciate them.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

You were the first to turn the America’s Cup into a sporting event capable of grabbing the public’s attention. The Valencia editions are still a fine example of that. So would it be possible to bring the America’s Cup back to that level?  Certainly. In fact, as much as possible has to be done to hold the public’s attention between one edition and the next. Aside from media-related benefits, the other significant aspect is that a racing circuit between Cups helps teams grow their competitiveness. The Valencia editions were memorable in terms of the audience because they were so close-fought. I don’t understand why Luna Rossa isn’t pushing things to get back on the water. They were only at a small disadvantage in terms of speed compared the Kiwis which I am convinced they could bridge if they kept training.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

From the T35s to the AC75s: if you want to win a high level race today, do you need to take many other aspects into account aside from the quality of the crew?  Sailing has evolved so fast that the boats themselves have become more complex to handle and steer. Just like Formula 1 and Moto GP. Factors such as electronics, hydraulics, foiling control systems and the boat set-up more generally, all come into play. Then when you are on the water, the human factor is still pivotal but it is not the only one. Even the way the teams race has changed. The boats are much faster and, as a result, so are the decisions you have to take. It is a bit like comparing 1970s football games with today’s. They seem to be played at completely different speeds. And just like in modern football, we no longer just have the Regista (ed.’s note: a midfielder that sits back and controls the tempo and flow of the game) dictating the rules and making the difference. The most successful teams are the ones with the best resources in every department. Just as happens aboard. And this makes the game much more interesting.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

Speaking of time, how do you perceive it when you are racing?  Time is everything. If you aren’t focused on the chronometer at the start, you can really comprise the result. But when I am actually racing, I go into another dimension that means I step out of time. Speed, concentration, adrenaline and emotions all expand your perception endlessly.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

What was your sweetest victory?  The very last race at Valencia in 2007 against New Zealand. It is still a unique and unforgettable moment in time.

ernesto bertarelli yacht party

What is your favourite seafaring memory or experience? There are so many, to be honest. For the last 20 years, I have been spending at least three months at sea. I can’t live without it. Even now, if I stop to think about it, the memories of my experience Papua New Guinea come flooding back – we didn’t see as much as another boat there for an entire month. And then the three weeks I spent in Antarctica when I saw at first-hand how many shades of blue there are in nature.

Interview: Ernesto Bertarelli

  • By Gary Jobson
  • Updated: February 24, 2003

The quiet 37-year-old leader of the Alinghi challenge, Ernesto Bertarelli, has created a syndicate that is an impressive blend of style and substance. Bertarelli made up the word “Alinghi” when he was young. It rolls off the tongue nicely. Alinghi represents “joy, dreams, a certain lightness, but also speed and action,” says Bertarelli. The team’s arresting logo resembles the wakes of circling boats, and its colors, black and red, represent the colors of Switzerland and New Zealand. Bertarelli is the CEO of the Serono Group, one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies, employing 4,500 people in 45 countries and reporting $317 million in net profit in 2001. Alinghi got off to a fast start in this America’s Cups with three quick wins, but weather delays have slowed the momentum event. On the fourth postponed day, ESPN’s Gary Jobson sat down with Bertarelli and Alinghi’s skipper, Russell Coutts (see separate interview). Jobson: Are the continual weather delays frustrating to you and the rest of the crew? Bertarelli: Oh, you know, we are here for racing so of course we prefer to race than to wait around. Jobson: Do you think the race committee could have gotten some races in? Bertarelli: Yesterday between 2 and 4 o’clock, we could have had a good race. The wind went up to ten knots; during the Louis Vuitton we raced any time there was more than seven. There were at least two hours where there was between seven and ten knots of wind. We could have raced yesterday. Jobson: Do you think the race committee should be leaving it up to the competitors whether to race or not? Bertarelli: I don’t think so. If we are ever lucky enough and strong enough to win this cup we will have an independent race committee. Jobson: Is this hard on your crew? You’re up 3 to 0, but is it hard to be just waiting day after day? Does it take away momentum? Bertarelli: Actually its OK. You know the three wins are far enough now that they are behind. The next race we basically start from scratch. We have to win two, they have to win five. That is the deal now. Jobson: How do you keep the momentum up? Bertarelli: Every morning 6:30; gym, weightlifting. Weather briefing at 8:15 and then we have the call we either go out, or not. If we don’t go out then it’s the next day 6:30. Jobson: Do you think the race committee and Team New Zealand are in collusion with each other? Bertarelli: Oh you’ve been in the America’s Cup long enough to know that it’s kind of a tradition and I’m looking forward to change that condition. I think the race committee should be independent. Jobson: Has sailing with Russell Coutts and his team of five lived up to your expectations? Bertarelli: Oh absolutely. Racing with Russell Coutts, Brad Butterworth, Murray Jones, Warwick Fleurry, Simon Daubney, I experienced myself as helmsman and we won the Farr 40 Worlds. Having Simon Daubney and Warwick Fleury trim for you is something else, I mean they basically drive the boat for you. They are the best crew in the world plus now we added Jochen Schumann, which is so different in style, but has integrated this team so beautifully that being in the middle of all that when it happens is the best experience of my life. Jobson: In every interview we’ve done with Russell Coutts, he always mentions Jochen Schumann so he must have a big influence. Bertarelli: Yeah there is a mutual respect there. Obviously everyone was wondering: you bring two big figures of sailing together in the same boat, what’s going to happen? There is a mutual respect and as I said they’re so different that they really work well together. It’s nice often to see Russell turn around and say “Jochen what do you think?” and Jochen launches the debate and Brad follows through and the whole thing comes together and you get the best sailing you can have. Jobson: Would it be better to just get the race going and let the time limit expire? Bertarelli: If the time runs out, it runs out. I think there was a very good question asked by [Warren St. John of] The New York Times the first day, “why don’t you give us some guidelines like you had during the Louis Vuitton?” You have a computer that tells us there’s enough wind. I mean tell us what is it that you are going to be doing? Don’t leave it up to the competitors, it’s not on. Jobson: Do you take pride in the people you have brought to this team? Bertarelli: Yeah, I’m really proud of the team we’ve been able to put together. Even the hard time we’ve had here for being criticized for putting this team together and the people leaving Team New Zealand and so forth. This is history. What we have shown is the quality of the sailing. And I really want to win the America’s Cup. To be remembered as the greatest America’s Cup sailing team ever, and this is what we’re working for. You get the best around and you go and have fun.

$160M superyacht sails into Lake Union

Share story.

A superyacht measuring 314 feet long and owned by billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, a former Miss U.K., docked in Lake Union Friday.

The VAVA II, reportedly in Seattle to refuel, is the 34th-largest yacht in the world, according to Boat International, a media group that serves the superyacht industry.

VAVA II, the largest privately owned yacht to be built in the United Kingdom, cost $160 million, features a helicopter landing pad, a swimming pool and six decks. It can accommodate 36 guests.

A Washington comparison: The yacht is longer than seven of the 23 Washington State Ferries.

Bertarelli, 48, is a Swiss/Italian pharmaceutical entrepreneur who inherited the biotech company Serono after his father’s death in 1998.

His net worth is $12.2 billion, according to Forbes. His wife, Kirsty Bertarelli, 42, was crowned Miss U.K. in 1988 and is one of Britain’s richest women, according to the Daily Mail.

VAVA II’s recent ports of call were Honolulu and Port Townsend, according to Marine Traffic, a website that tracks maritime vessels’ locations and travels.

The VAVA II went through the Ballard Locks Friday afternoon without any issues, a Locks official said, though onlookers said it did almost hit the side of the chamber a few times.

Though it dwarfs the sailboats and dinghies often seen on Lake Union, the VAVA II isn’t the largest yacht to dock in Seattle waters. That prize likely goes to The Serene, a $330 million yacht owned by Russian vodka distributor Yuri Scheffler, which was moored in Elliott Bay in August 2013. The Serene is about 124 feet longer than the VAVA II.

It’s unclear how long the VAVA II will be in Seattle.

The yacht has a fuel capacity of 115,043 gallons, which provides a maximum range of 5,000 nautical miles at 14 knots.

According to the Daily Mail, refueling costs the billionaires $400,000.

Pocket change, really.

Bertarelli-Coral-Conservation

One superyacht owner's mission to save the seas

Ernesto Bertarelli’s family established the Bertarelli Foundation to provide crucial support for innovative science. Claire Wrathall talks to the philanthropist about his desire to save the oceans by building bridges

At the centre of the reception area of Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist Ernesto Bertarelli’s London office stands a large mirror-finish stainless-steel globe. Created by the yacht designer Rémi Tessier , who also designed the interior of Bertarelli’s 96-metre superyacht, Vava II , it is a striking piece, the subject appropriate to a citizen of the world. But look closely and you’ll see that the oceans are picked out in relief and stand proud of the land: a warning, perhaps, that our planet is in trouble. Sea levels are rising and, as an aide notes as we pass en route to his office, in Bertarelli’s view, the oceans especially are urgently in need of protection. And the best way to effect that is through knowledge.

“I have always had an afinity with the ocean,” Bertarelli tells me. “I had my genealogy explored recently and it confirmed that, as I thought, I’m very much from around the Mediterranean . So it must be in my genes. I’ve never lived away from water. We had a house in Switzerland in the hills but, for me, it did not feel right and we had to move to a new house by the side of the lake. I need to be near water!”

Born in Rome in 1965, Bertarelli’s family moved from Italy to Switzerland when he was seven, and he learned to sail on Lake Geneva and on holidays in Porto Ercole. “I was given a boat before I got a moped,” he recalls. “I was about 12, 14 maybe, and freedom in my teenage years came from the water, not the road. I was at liberty to take the boat and go exploring. Parents seemed to give children a lot more freedom then than we are able to do these days.”

He became an accomplished sailor and went on to found – and compete as a member of – his Alinghi team, which won the America’s Cup for Switzerland in Auckland in 2003 (with Bertarelli as navigator) and defended it in Valencia in 2007 (as an afterguard, runner trimmer and grinder).

But it was as a diver and frustrated fisherman that he really came to realise the plight of the oceans. Returning to the places he’d spent holidays in his youth – “Elba, Giglio, Ponza and the Argentario peninsula” – it struck him that marine life was becoming depleted and he “started to comprehend” how “drastically, the Mediterranean was changing for the worse”. Thankfully he was not the only one to reflect on this and “groups and governments along the Mediterranean made the same realisation and now there are many initiatives in place to reverse this long decline; many, I’m pleased to say, led by Italy.”

His songwriter wife, Kirsty, who co-authored All Saints’ 2000 international hit Black Coffee, helps to inspire the family’s philanthropy and has spoken of a memorable dive they did together early in their relationship off the coast of Baja California in the Sea of Cortez . A decade later they returned to exactly the same place, hoping to repeat the experience. “But when we got in the water there was nothing,” she said in an interview earlier this year. “Everything we’d seen before had gone. That’s when I knew we had to do something.”

Hence the philanthropic work of the Bertarelli Foundation, which supports a range of causes, not least ocean science. “You learn a sense of responsibility on the water,” he continues. “You have to look after not only yourself, but also others – whether they’re people or places or living creatures. Maybe that sense of personal responsibility was born of being at sea.”

Over the past decade the foundation, led also by his sister, Dona Bertarelli, has been instrumental in creating nearly 2.4 million square kilometres of marine-protected areas in the South Pacific (around Easter Island, Pitcairn, French Polynesia and, most recently, New Caledonia), the Caribbean and perhaps most importantly, the Indian Ocean. Covering an area of 640,000 square kilometres, the British Indian Ocean Territory includes the 58 mostly uninhabited islands of the Chagos Archipelago, and contains more than 220 species of coral and at least 784 species of fish – from Nemo-like striped clownfish to species of shark, tuna, marlin and sailfish, whose populations have been depleted by intensive fishing across the Indian Ocean.

In 2010 the foundation, along with others, advocated for its designation as a reserve and “no-take” Marine Protected Area where fishing is prohibited. Working with the British government, the foundation identified an opportunity to fund a boat to patrol the reserve and also invest in trialling new technologies to monitor and enforce the reserve more efficiently and economically. Since then, dozens of illegal fishing vessels have been apprehended by the British administration, which acts as an important warning to other fishing boats tempted to fish illegally in the reserve’s waters.

While access to the territory is strictly limited, Bertarelli has taken part in scientific expeditions there on Vava II , the Devonport-built yacht, which he took delivery of in 2012 and which has been deployed for three research expeditions by scientists from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and other research universities from around the world. While there aren’t, he says, purpose-built laboratory facilities on board, there is sufficient space to set them up when needed. “My wife and I had had a romantic idea that we would raise our three children at sea, so we planned a school room . It’s easily turned into a floating laboratory and the deck space can accommodate the scientists’ equipment.”

Bertarelli has supported numerous research projects into shark tracking, seabird ecology and coral reefs, both in the Chagos Archipelago and beyond. And in 2017 the Bertarelli Programme in Marine Science was formally enshrined, an initiative that within its first full year already attracted 63 scientists from more than 20 institutions in seven countries. Its object is not just to support research but to encourage scientists to share research and work collaboratively.

“What’s particularly novel about the programme is the interdisciplinary nature of it,” says its director, Professor Heather Koldewey of ZSL. “We’re teaming up seabird ecologists with coral-reef scientists; people who tag and track sharks around the world with oceanographers; people who are interested in the deepest ocean with those who work in the shallow waters and terrestrial ecologists working on islands. By considering this whole system and how its constituent parts interact with each other, by combining disciplines that often work in discrete silos, we’re able to find new ways of looking at the ocean and new ways of doing things.”

In essence, the programme brings different groups of scientists together to tackle problems with their own particular expertise. “Many of these scientists would not be working together if it was not for our programme,” says Bertarelli. This ‘knocking heads together’ approach, which fuses expertise from many disciplines, has “proposed answers which would not have been imaginable if we hadn’t fostered these new collaborations”.

“This is pretty much the end of the era when scientists and academics competed by building walls and trenches,” says Bertarelli. “People still compete of course, probably harder than ever, but now it’s about who can build the best bridges. Who can connect to the best labs, the best institutions and the best departments. Academia isn’t less competitive; it’s potentially more competitive. But the way people compete is collaborative and more focused on team-building, which suits my approach.”

He talks excitedly about two recent projects in the Chagos Archipelago, both the subject of presentations at last year’s inaugural Bertarelli Foundation Marine Science Symposium at the Royal Geographical Society in London last September. One, by Professor Nick Graham, chair in marine ecology at Lancaster University, established the deleterious effect of rats on coral colonies. That’s right: land-dwelling rodents cause havoc on coral reefs.

Put simply, rats cause seabird populations to die out by eating their eggs. If seabirds, which feed on fish out in the open ocean, stop nesting on an island because of the rats, there will cease to be guano, nutrients from which seep back into the ocean thereby providing nutrients to the coral. Fish have also been observed to grow faster and larger near islands with lots of seabirds and no rats. By comparing the reefs around six islands with rat populations and six that had never been invaded, it was possible to demonstrate that if rats can be eradicated, ocean life will flourish.

“That was a really striking experiment,” Bertarelli says. “It would have been very difficult to do it so thoroughly anywhere else in the world.” (The comprehensive research was based on findings from a dozen uninhabited tropical islands, six with rat populations, and six without.) But in the Chagos Archipelago, where the closest continental land mass is the southern tip of India 1,500 kilometres away, “you have a unique situation. That’s why I think the territory is such an important place for the planet.”

He becomes yet more animated when he describes research by the University of Plymouth’s Dr Phil Hosegood, an oceanographer concerned with the physics rather than the biology of the oceans and how internal wave dynamics attract silvertip sharks. “People who spend time on the ocean and go fishing have always known that you find more life around seamounts,” says Bertarelli. “But nobody really knows why.”

Thanks to two fieldwork expeditions to the Chagos Archipelago, which has about 300 seamounts, Hosegood was able to establish that it is wave patterns that cause fish to congregate over a particular rock formation called Sandes Seamount. As Bertarelli encapsulates it, “The tide creates a suction mechanism like a syringe that drives the cooler, deeper, nutrient-rich water up over the seamount summit as it flushes up and down.” These currents stir up the water, causing the fish living over the seamount to school, attracting predators that are able to hunt easily among the dense patches of fish. “I thought that was fantastic,” he says. “It was so profound. It had not occurred to me – but perhaps we had not asked the right question before. There’s a lot of that in science. More and more I’m seeing that in scientific discovery, something that seems obvious turns out not to be.”

Not every scientist involved in the Bertarelli Programme is a professor – or, at least, not yet. “What’s particularly exciting is that many of these scientists are at an early stage in their careers,” says Koldewey. “We have 12 PhD students and five Master’s students already in the programme. So not only are we delivering world-class science, we’re also training the next generation of marine scientists.”

This is another subject close to Bertarelli’s heart. “It’s possible that the very rigid hierarchy that exists in academia can hinder youthful ability. As a young, smart PhD, you can get out of academia and create a company which will hopefully be as successful as Google or Facebook – but we don’t want all the smartest people to become entrepreneurs. We need some to stay working in academia, pushing the boundaries of our understanding.”

Education is not, he stresses, just what goes on in universities. “I spend almost three months of the year sailing somewhere in the world and wherever I go I think it’s very important to spend time with local people. Wherever my family has been, I’ve found that people who live by the ocean have a great affinity for visitors – perhaps because the ocean has always been our greatest means of transport and exchange. We once spent almost a year in Indonesia , and it was easy and really interesting to engage with local communities. We found out how their fisheries were doing, how they spent their time, what their concerns were.” That way, too, he says, it’s possible to highlight certain behaviours – the discarding of fishing nets, for example – and explain “gently” how they are problematic and how they might change or adapt. “It’s really a lot more fun to engage with the places you visit and to understand how people live their lives. I think philanthropy has to be personal, and our family’s approach is to always make it so.”

Former Miss UK beauty queen Kirsty Bertarelli - who became Britain's richest divorcee netting a £400million settlement after splitting her billionaire husband last year - has revealed she has a mystery toyboy lover in a touching Instagram snap.

The model and pop singer, 51, shared a romantic photo which shows them holding hands on a holiday walk - her in a yellow dress and cap and him wearing a blue t-shirt and grey camo shorts.

Miss Bertarelli secretly divorced  husband Ernesto, with whom she has three children, in October last year after their 21-year marriage hit the rocks.

Before their divorce, the couple were jointly listed in 14th place in last year's Sunday Times Rich List with a fortune estimated at a staggering £9.2billion – bigger than the gross domestic product of many countries, including the Bahamas, Brunei and Armenia.

In addition to her settlement, she has been given a spectacular modern house by Lake Geneva in Switzerland bought this year for £52million. She also owns an £8million chalet in the Swiss ski resort of Gstaad.

Mrs Bertarelli was born Kirsty Roper in the Staffordshire market town of Stone to a well-off family behind one of the world's biggest manufacturers of ceramic products, Churchill China in Stoke-on-Trent.

After moving to London, she partied with socialites such as Elizabeth Hurley, Tamara Beckwith and Tamara Mellon.

Among those who fell for her charms was gambling and wildlife park heir Damian Aspinall, whose ex-wife Louise named her in their divorce.

But Mrs Bertarelli denied that anything happened while Damian and Louise were still together. 'He was already separated,' she explained. 'At least, that's what he told me.'

After being crowned Miss UK in 1988, Kirsty was second runner-up in that year's Miss World pageant. She then became a successful pop singer and songwriter. She co-wrote All Saints' No 1 single Black Coffee, a worldwide hit in 2000.

'So many people would just go off on their yacht and spend their life drinking champagne, but not me,' she said.

'You should grasp life. Singing has been inside me my whole life and I can't not do it.'

When the couple separated after 21 years last year, although the size of her payment was not disclosed, Miss Bertarelli reportedly agreed to a £350 million payout.

Mrs Bertarelli was represented by Baroness (Fiona) Shackleton, the lawyer known as the Steel Magnolia who represented Prince Charles and Sir Paul McCartney in their divorces. She is believed to have signed a prenuptial agreement before marrying Italian-born Bertarelli in 2000.

One of her friends told the Mail: 'The settlement was more generous than it had to be. They didn't want a long, drawn-out court case in Switzerland and he wanted to recognise the length of their marriage.'

In July last year, Miss Bertarelli posted a heartfelt message on Instagram to mark her 20th wedding anniversary.

'Twenty years together today!! Taking a little spin with you to mark the occasion of one hell of an amazing journey!' she wrote. 'With you always by my side and me always by yours. I love you so very much!'

Kirsty said in a rare interview several years before, marriage to Ernesto proved the gateway to an 'amazing' life, pictured on social media showing the pair jetting off to exotic locations, exclusive beach clubs, and ski resorts.

It came as a shock to many when the couple quietly divorced after 21 years of marriage, with Miss Bertarelli now living alone in a stunning £350 million mansion on the shores of Lake Geneva.

A source told the Daily Mail at the time: 'Only a very few were aware of what was going on.

'They have both been very discreet. They still have a lot of respect for each other.'

From 2008 the couple divided their time between an £8 million estate in Gstaad, a £10 million mansion in Geneva, a mews house in Belgravia and the £100 million yacht Vava II

Nightlife City Guide

Moscow nightlife beautiful girls

Moscow: nightlife and clubs

Moscow nightlife: despite the freezing weather, the Russian capital gets hot as the sun goes down. Between discos, luxury, exaggerated parties and beautiful Russian girls, the Moscow nightlife offers everything you need for memorable nights.

Moscow nightlife

The city of Moscow is definitely one of the most interesting European cities: the stories about underground lines and secret bunkers, the architecture of its buildings, from the Kremlin to St. Basil's Cathedral, up to the Soviet style of the Seven Sisters and modern skyscrapers, make the Russian capital is a unique and fascinating city.

Moscow nightlife by night

One of the many things that Moscow is famous for is its wild nightlife . Moscow never sleeps. If there is anything true about Russians, it is that they love to party! Despite its freezing weather, Moscow turns out to be a hot city with endless fun, hip nightclubs, extreme luxury, beautiful Russian girls and lots of booze when night falls!

Moscow Russian girls nightlife

In fact, in recent years, the Russian capital has definitively abandoned the gray period of communism and its inhabitants have given vent to their desire for fun. As you might expect in a city of over 12 million people, Moscow has an amazing array of nightlife options and a huge choice for all tastes, whether you are a jazz fan, hardcore clubbers or just plain old alcoholics. The nightlife in Moscow winds through a multitude of alternative and transgressive nightclubs where the watchword is to meet new people and spend a night of unbridled and uninhibited fun . In addition to the numerous discos, in the Russian capital there are also 20 casinos open until dawn. For those who want a break of intriguing relaxation, in the city of Moscow there are also numerous massage salons .

Moscow nightlife

Most of Moscow's nightclubs contain a restaurant, a bar area and a nightclub (the larger ones also have bowling alleys, billiards and a casino!). Perhaps because Moscow is such a large metropolis with very cold temperatures and taxis are so expensive that the owners of the bars and clubs want to offer their customers an all in one place for night entertainment.

So, in other words, Moscow is not the best city in the world for bar-crawling, especially bearing in mind that these multipurpose venues often charge entrance, but rather it is better to carefully choose the club where to spend the night.

For a quieter and more sober evening, head for an evening stroll along the Via Arbat or the Red Square to be fascinated by the lights of the city and the grandeur of the buildings, and admire the shops and street artists. An alternative to experience Moscow's nightlife is to spend an evening of lyric, ballet or opera. The Russian capital is home to around sixty theaters, the most famous of which is the world-renowned Bolshoi Theater (Theater Square, 1, Moscow).

Moscow nightlife districts

Moscow's nightlife is not concentrated in a single district but is scattered throughout the city. However, there are areas with a greater concentration of bars and nightclubs .

The Krasnij Oktjabr (Russian for "Red October") complex, a red brick building located on the island in the center of the Moscow River that once housed a chocolate factory, is dotted with numerous trendy nightclubs and offers spectacular views of the river and the symbolic places of the Russian capital. This is where the most glamorous parties in Moscow take place, there are numerous bars, restaurants and art galleries.

Nightlife Moscow Red October Krasnij Oktjabr

Other neighborhoods with good nightlife are the old manufactory area near the Russian government building which houses some bars, the area around the Trubnaya metro and around Kuznetsky Most , while the Kurskaya groups the clubs with electronic music. We can also mention the area of the Patriarch's ponds, an area that is teeming with quiet bars.

Clubs and discos in Moscow

fb_icon_tiny

The crowd is very mixed. Students, young professionals, techno lovers, tourists all gather at Propaganda. Everyone comes to enjoy the music and have fun. It is one of the few clubs where the dancefloor dominates and there are hardly any tables, apart from a few that overlook the entire space. Propaganda is a restaurant until midnight. You can come earlier for dinner and stay for dancing. After midnight, the staff clears the tables from the dance floor and the whole place turns into a club. The place is different from the usual Moscow restaurant / club hybrids, however, because the atmosphere changes completely from "relaxed restaurant" to "underground electro club". Not to be missed.

Moscow Nightlife Propaganda

There are more areas with different music. In the first area, expect a mix of traditional music and Russian pop songs. In the second, slightly larger area, there is live Russian pop music until 2am. After that it is mostly some kind of electronic music. The club is frequented by beautiful Russian girls around 18-25 years old, stunning students or models, and of course there is a good deal of young Russians, middle-aged men and foreign tourists trying their luck! Unlike many other nightclubs, the Icon is a pure nightclub and not a club turned into a restaurant. In any case, if you like to party in a big club and want to savor the typical Moscow nightlife , this is the perfect solution.

Moscow Icon Club nightlife

The crowd is the same as in other high-end Moscow clubs. Men are rarely under the age of 35 and are committed to giving the impression that money is not an issue. The women are amazing even by Moscow nightlife - if you want to meet Moscow's super models, this is the place! Ideal if you want to toast with the Moscow elite.

Moscow Siberia nightlife

The club is located on two floors. The lower floor is mainly frequented by people hanging out at the bar and is good for conversation. The narrow stairs that perfectly fit the student atmosphere of the club take you to the main floor where the real party takes place, complete with a bedlam and girls dancing on the bar counter. In the summer months there is also an outdoor terrace. The place is always crowded and bouncers unnecessarily queue people - having a table or someone inside can be the key to skipping the queue. Otherwise, you might end up waiting half an hour or more. Come early or come back late if you want to avoid the crowds.

Moscow nightlife Rolling Stone Bar

The crowd that frequents this club is quite mixed. People are less trendy and more underground. The place is suitable for afterhours, so most people arrive from 3am onwards.

Moscow Gazgolder nightlife

Immediately upon entering, you will have the feeling that you have come to the local high school graduation prom instead of a real Moscow nightclub. There is no real interior design, but basically just a large hall with a stage and a bar. The crowd is almost entirely made up of teenagers and young people. Not many of the teens speak English, but it probably doesn't matter after all the alcohol. The music ranges from Russian pop and hip-hop to the most famous international hits. Perfect if you want to party and drink alcohol in one of the cheapest clubs in Moscow .

Moscow Tipsy nightlife

Here too, it's full of beautiful girls and it's also a great place to hit them off, as those who come here are notoriously more approachable. The advice is to be very firm with the girls who approach and to make your intentions clear. If you want to be 100% sure to get in, come at 2am when the club is still uncrowded.

Moscow nightlife Miks Afterparty

Oblaka plays a mix of Russian and international pop music. Occasionally, as in many other clubs, there are performances by Russian pop singers. As is often the case in these types of clubs, the music and DJ are not the best but the guests don't seem to care.

Moscow Oblaka nightlife

Moscow's bars and pubs

The bar looks similar but still distinctly different than regular Moscow posh clubs. Most of the people who frequent this place are over 25, and you can find everything from young professionals to creative types to self-proclaimed models. Great if you want to see the "real Muscovites" celebrate without the overblown flashes of wealth. The proposed music is a strange mix of old and new commercial songs and Russian pop.

Moscow nightlife Bar Klava

Downstairs is a large open space that opens its doors wide in the summer. The interior is rustic, yet elegant, with wooden furnishings and plenty of seating. The interior combined with Ugolek's popularity creates a crowded yet intimate atmosphere, especially on weekends. People come to chat, drink and eat. The upstairs bar has a more welcoming atmosphere. It is smaller, with soft lighting and armchairs to be able to relax. On weekends there is a DJ who mixes electronic music and transforms the bar into a relaxed place, ideal for the pre-party.

An Insider's Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Nightlife

As a city that never sleeps, Moscow is known for its vibrant nightlife as much as for its stunning architecture. Having a plethora of choice, you may need someone to guide guide you through the club scene of Russia’s capital. Read on for the best places to take you through the night.

One of Moscow’s oldest nightclubs, Propaganda is an iconic spot that’s been around since the 1990s. Featuring deliberately shabby interiors, Propaganda, affectionately called “ propka ” by regulars, still gathers crowds even on weekdays. The club is particularly favored for scoring world-class DJs, hosting gay parties on Sundays and offering tasty and inexpensive food .

Another legendary spot, frequented by the cool crowd, this bar was founded by celebrated Russian designer Denis Simachev. Fancier and pricier than Propaganda, it’s worth a visit if only for eclectic interiors and salmon pizza.

Nauka i Iskusstvo

Tiny and nondescript, Nauka i Iskusstvo (‘Science and Art’) is all about the music . Although there are no fancy cocktails, glitzy interiors or bohemian entourage, the club hosts some of the best electronic parties, hip music gigs and cool designer shows.

One of Moscow’s quirkiest nightclubs, Squat ¾ occupies the basement of the former Central Baths building. Instagrammed by Moscow’s it-girls, the club is famous for gothic techno-balls and bohemian raves. Apart from the club and a bar, it is also home to a Greek cafe, barber shop and fashion store.

The newest venue on the list, Pluton is located on the premises of the hip design center Artplay. Despite the high ceilings of a former industrial building and tiled walls, Pluton feels strangely homely and comforting. Opened in 2017, this is not a nightclub in the traditional sense. Pluton promotes all kinds of events: from cathartic ambient, to jazz music to art-performances.
