Breaking wind

So I picked one of these up for a song, all the rigging is good, the sails look to be brand new! and a good trailor to boot. I thought that the kids and I could use this on the little local in the back yard when we aren't out on the Mac. Anyone have any experience with these? judging from the masthead rig, large sails and the bilgeboards I am guessing it should be a quick little thing?

It looks like a fun little boat, Chrysler LS-13 http://chryslersailing.lizards.net/sail_ls13.html Picture of one rigged: http://www.sailingtexas.com/sls13.html Why do they call the 'centerboards' 'bilgeboards'? Do you have a spinnaker for it too?

no chute but I bet I can make one!

same function/purpose but bilgeboards are mounted closer to the sides, sometimes splayed so when heeling they are vertical in the water. Not sure how close to the sides they have to be before they become bilgeboards, too far and they become leeboards. (Once won dinner for two because I knew the difference!) Ken.

LS 13 Learned how to sail on #311 on White Rock Lake in Dallas back in 69. Sailed that boat for 6 years and have my name on the nationals trophy 3 times. Let the little ones drive and put the big guy in front to keep the transom out of the water. Repack the bilgeboard handles every year and they will still leak, you just get used to bailing. If there is not already foam under the seats ,put some in as this will allow the boat to float after you flip it. It will take a spinaker and they are alot of fun and easy to control. If you want to get the most out of the jib you will need to add some short jibcar tracks.

thanks guys we took it out last night! Carl you are right about the bilgeboards they leak a little, 2 hours and not enough water to speak of (barely to the bottom of the wood floor) the jib could definately use a track and I already ordered the stuff from sailrite to make a chute! this little thing is pretty quick even in light air. Man if this boat was a little bit smaller I would use it for a dinghy on the Mac. What a great find this has been, and my kids like it too. My oldest is already collecting milk jugs so he can make a race track!

chrysler lone star 13 leak

just inherited this project. when in the water the levers that control the bilgeboards leak. any idea on how to solve this leak or is this a sawzall job?any light is good light thanks

Leaky Levers I had an LS 13 many years ago. As I recall they had a removable plate and a gasket. Get some gasket material and cut a new gasket. I doubt you'd find one already made. Steve Bradford 1980 Irwin 34 Dulcimer

CalebD

How about bicycle inner tube rubber for a gasket material?

thanks, do you remember how the control lever for the bilgeboard came off the control arm? these boys seem to have welded it on? is that right?

Lone Star bilge board leaks Consider yourself lucky if all you need are new gaskets. I bought a 1969 LS-13 a few years ago and had the same problem. A little investigation revealed one of the few weaknesses in the LoneStar 13/16 design... the fir plywood cores in the leeboard trunks were insufficiently isolated from water. I suspect this led to the demise of many otherwise solid Lonestars out there. When the plywood swells with moisture, the hastily layed-up fiberglass trunks may crack or partially separate from the rest of the hull and the screws in the aluminum mounting flanges for the pivot levers will strip out of the rotten wood cores. The best long-term repair is to remove some fiberglass and excavate all the rotten wood, replacing it with either a strong waterproof core material or well encased quality plywood. If the mounting screws are still threaded into solid, dry wood, all that is needed is to ream out the exposed wood around the hole for the pivot shaft and seal the new bore with epoxy. Then you can make your own pressure plates & gaskets out of 1/8" thick UHMW Polyethylene sheet and a properly sized O-ring. The polyethylene can be cut using a scroll saw or CNC. The O-Rings should be sandwiched between concentric rings of UHMW and a pressure plate of the same material, and can be adjusted to provide the correct amount of friction to hold the boards in any position. I also had to cut away the inner shell of the bilgeboard trunk around the core and replace the plywood. The core swelling and sloppy factory assembly required me to repair cracks around the base of the trunks with epoxy fillets as well. It was well worth the effort, because my hull has been bone dry ever since, so long as I keep the lee rail above water when heeling and remember to install plugs before launching.

Re: Lone Star bilge board leaks Do you have photos of when you did this on yours? I have a LS-16 that has this issue, and am trying to decide if this is something I want to undertake myself.

I just bought a Lonestar 13'. One of the bilge boards was removed, but I have all the parts. Any idea on how to reinstall it?

I am hoping to get a Chrysler LS-13 that is being given away. I spoke with the owner and he said that it needs repairs, possibly the bilge boards or where they tuck up in. (from what I could understand). I'd be interested in any information about repairs for this boat. Thanks

I will keep you posted. I have someone coming to help with the repair on June 27th.

13.40-pound largemouth bass caught at Inks Lake in Hill Country breaks waterbody record

Inks lake has produced its first legacy class fish.

Rebecca Salinas , Digital Journalist

A fisherman at Inks Lake State Park in the Hill Country broke the waterbody record for largemouth bass with a 13.40-pound fish.

Darryl Hanson II of Round Rock reeled in the whopper on Sunday, giving Inks Lake its first Legacy Class fish.

Recommended Videos

That means Inks Lake is the 78th public water body to produce a Legacy Class ShareLunker — a program from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department that highlights the best lakes for bass fishing.

Get Outdoors content straight to your inbox with our free newsletter.

A news release from TPWD states Hanson was competing in the Tonkawa Bassmasters Club tournament.

He told TPWD that based on previous trips to the lake, he knew he wanted to fish in a particular area that included docks and cement structures.

As he was fishing parallel to a structure, the fish “slammed it,” he said.

“I set the hook, and she pulled back and ran out to open water,” Hanson said in the news release. “She came up out of the water and I knew this was a big fish. She made five or six runs with two of them going underneath the boat. She got to the point where I could get her closer to the boat and scooped her into the net. I lifted her in the boat and said that must be a double-digit.”

His bag for the day totaled 39 pounds, making him the winner of the tournament. The fish also beat his own personal best — an 11.40-pound largemouth bass caught at Choke Canyon.

Hanson said he weighed the fish on the tournament’s and state park’s scales before starting the process for the Toyota ShareLunker program.

According to TPWD, the previous record for largemouth bass at the lake was a 12.50-pound fish caught in February 2017. The lake is located about 20 miles northwest of Marble Falls.

The Toyota ShareLunker is a program from TPWD that runs year-round and aims to enhance bass fishing in Texas. Anglers who catch large bass in Texas lakes can submit data to the ShareLunker program to win prizes.

It has four levels of participation:

  • Lunker Legacy Class, 13-plus pounds between the spawning period of January and March.
  • Lew’s Legend Class, 13-plus pounds from April to December.
  • Strike King Elite Class, 10-plus pounds.
  • Bass Pro Shops Lunker Class, 8-plus pounds.

O. H. Ivie — a lake 55 miles east of San Angelo — leads the program this season with five legacy class, eight elite class, and three lunker class fish.

On Monday, Larry Walker of Irving landed a 13.83-pound largemouth bass at O.H. Ivie.

“In the Lone Star State, there are numerous water bodies capable of reaching an impressive 13 pounds or heavier,” Natalie Goldstrohm, Toyota ShareLunker program coordinator, said in the release. “There are reservoirs that have historically produced bigger bass, like Lake Fork and O.H. Ivie, and those that are lesser known that have remarkable trophy bass fisheries. We are awaiting what the remainder of the season holds.”

From Jan. 1-March 31, anglers who reel in a 13-plus-pound bass can loan it to TPWD for the ShareLunker selective breeding and stocking program.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
