Viking Yachts 54 Convertible Review

  • By Tom Serio
  • Updated: July 30, 2021

Viking Yachts team members are boatbuilders and hardcore big-game anglers. Their experience imbues the Viking 54 Convertible.

The 54C has the builder’s signature sloping and straight sheer, reaching from 6 feet, 8 inches of freeboard forward to 2 feet, 11 inches of freeboard aft—and making the endgame release or gaff shot safe and easy on the crew. Hullside vents, a raked stem with generous flare, and a blacked-out wraparound forward window are other Viking trademarks in the 54C’s aesthetic.

What you can’t see, but can feel, is the hull’s performance across the water. Viking tweaked the hull form with double chines and refined prop pockets, as well as adjusted the size and length of the strakes to improve overall ride and performance. Engineers and designers used computational fluid dynamics to run virtual sea trials and adjust the vessel’s hull bottom, understand trim angles and efficiencies, and analyze pressure distribution across the wetted surfaces. The data, they say, helped make the boat faster, safer and more comfortable.

Fishermen know that a day staring at lines or working kites and floats can be tiresome. There is mezzanine seating a level above the cockpit that provides a respite and perch for those on watch, or for guests to watch a fish fight. A freezer and insulated stowage are under the seats. A tackle cabinet is to starboard. The 54C’s flybridge overhang is extended for shade, but the captain’s view from either the flybridge or tuna tower remains clear.

The vessel’s cockpit has a sizable 154 square feet of dance floor. There are no latches, handles or obstructions to snag on while doing double duty on a line. Nonslip or teak decking provide solid footing. Bait is kept in the transom livewell. A laminated backing plate is installed during construction for an optional fighting chair, leaning post or table. The starboard-side in-deck fish box is a single unit long enough to hold that bigeye-tuna wolf pack, and the portside fish box can be split into two sections, with one serving as an additional livewell. All fish boxes have rubber gaskets for a solid seal when closed.

For all the fishing focus on the outside, Viking created yacht-level luxury inside this three-stateroom, two-head sport-fisherman. Just inside the salon, an L-shaped settee with a teak table is to port for casual lounging or stretching out. Forward is the U-shaped galley. The after end of the galley peninsula is cut on a diagonal, allowing room for two fixed stools while keeping them outside the flow of traffic. Across and to starboard is a high-gloss dinette with curved seating. Adding to the open feel in the salon are side and aft windows, as well as 6-foot-4-inch headroom.

For the traveling tournament crew, the galley is set up for a season of self-sufficient meal prep with four Sub-Zero fridge-freezer drawers, an in-cabinet Samsung microwave, a Miele four-burner electric cooktop, a stainless-steel sink, and several cabinets above and below. Viking numbers each cabinet component, so if a piece like a door is damaged, the yard can replace it with an exact match, wood grain and all.

A dark-walnut Amtico sole in the galley is durable and makes for easy maintenance. Argento-style PentalQuartz countertops and a Soho Studio metal mosaic backsplash create a contemporary feel. To accent the high-gloss teak cabinets, Viking offers several interior-decor packages, including Majilite headliner panels, fabric filler in the window mullions, and flybridge cushions.

Belowdecks, the master stateroom is amidships and to port with a walk-around queen berth, credenza, hanging locker, underberth stowage and a 32-inch high-definition TV. The en suite head has a fiberglass stall shower with an integrated seat and stowage cabinet. I got aboard Hull No. 1, and it had the optional over-under crossover berth in the forward VIP. The standard layout is a single centerline queen berth. The VIP and starboard twin-bunk staterooms share a head, which has a shower stall.

Up top, the flybridge helm console has room for two 21-inch Garmin multifunction displays and a row of Bocatech switches, creating a streamlined glass bridge. Side helm boxes house VHF radios, a Seakeeper 9 display, a FLIR controller, a Garmin mouse pad and more. Overhead is an electronics console with flush-mounted MAN engine displays, an additional Garmin screen and room for more electronics. Forward of the helm console is a lounge seat with armrests, as well as port and starboard lounge seats with forward-facing backrests. Stowage is under all the seats.

Geared for the owner-operator and with room for the fishing family or tournament team, the Viking 54 Convertible is a 40-plus-knot fish-chaser built by anglers for anglers.

Viking 54 Sport Tower Review

  • By Peter Frederiksen
  • July 19, 2022

Viking Yachts has a proven formula for expanding its fleet by building a completely new model within a model. The New Gretna, New Jersey, boatbuilder’s latest example is its 54 Sport Tower, a model that premiered at the 2022 Miami International Boat Show. Utilizing the resin-infused composite-constructed hull of its 54 Convertible that launched one year before, the Viking engineering and design group unleashed its pair of five-axis profilers to manufacture a series of molds that created a new hard-sided deckhouse, hardtop and cockpit, resulting in the largest express sport-fishing yacht in the company’s 58-year history.

The 54 ST is part of the 54 Open series, which also includes the 54 Open and Sport Coupe. Our test boat was Hull No. 1 of the series, a stealthy bluewater battlewagon made available to us by its owner through Viking dealer Staten Island Yacht Sales. Express-style sportboats demonstrate peak appeal to owner-operators who typically fish with small crews by allowing the skipper to be just steps away from the cockpit. Adding a tuna tower doubles the boat’s efficacy, and the combination of its fishing features married to an inviting interior is an attraction for both new and experienced owners—especially those who participate in tournaments. The style also caters to owners who are considering either moving up or down in boat size.

Cockpit and Command Deck

Sporting 154 square feet of usable space, the cockpit is well-designed and outfitted for offshore work. A livewell is built into the transom with a split lid, and is available with a transparent viewing window and interior lighting. Recessed storage compartments beneath the fiberglass sole can be divided to accept deposits from the ice machine, handle the day’s catch, stow gear, or supplement the livewell capacity when needed. Removable on-deck livewells also can be added, with direct drainage overboard through custom scupper fittings.

A walk-through transom door with lift gate, along with a single large lazarette hatch to protect and access a Seakeeper SK16 gyrostabilizer, contribute safety, comfort and convenience. Beneath the coaming finds the Cablemaster shore power feed, 12- and 24-volt outlets to supply power to kite reels and dredge gear, dockside freshwater inlets, as well as freshwater and saltwater outlets.

Watch: We show you how to rig one of the best baits for blue marlin: the swimming mackerel .

The mezzanine deck features twin seating separated at the centerline to reach the command bridge and engine room. Beneath each seat, insulated storage is suitable for an available freezer option. The mezzanine steps also add capacity for gear and a drink-box cooler.

The command station is organized with large, distortion-free glass panels recessed into the one-piece fiberglass wraparound windshield. An adjustable Stidd helm chair is mounted on a raised platform to deliver comfort and spot-on visibility when steaming offshore, watching the activity in the cockpit, or monitoring three Garmin 8622 displays in the raised console above the fiberglass—or optional teak—helm pod. Electronic ZF single-lever controls with built-in bow-thruster buttons are matched to the stainless-steel steering wheel, and Optimus power steering provides the right consolidation for effortless control and rapid response.

Available air conditioning at the helm keeps the cool breeze flowing. A recessed portside console box contains a pair of VHF radios, Bocatech switches, gyro, thruster, thermal camera, watermaker, ice chipper and trim-tab displays, among other ship’s systems, and the Rupp hydraulic outrigger switches. Engine and other Garmin instrumentation are flush-mounted into the hardtop underside, as are a pair of Miya Epoch Super US-9R teaser reels and a pair of rod lockers to accommodate rod-and-reel outfits and gaffs. Flanking the helm are companion navigator chairs with storage underneath.

The command deck is noteworthy for its volume because it uses much of the boat’s almost-18-foot beam. Aft of the helm, the area resembles the space you would find in a convertible’s salon, with a dinette to port and an L-shape lounge to starboard, plus another deep-capacity refrigerated drink box. Chilled air flows from the vents in the cushions lining the area for desired climate control. The insulated deck sole and the ceiling height do a good job absorbing ambient noise, making it easy to converse at normal levels. Aft bulkhead options include a choice of soft rollup or fixed design.

The second command station is provided by Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers by way of a 5-foot-6-inch gap tuna tower with a one-piece fiberglass standing platform, complete with molded-in LED spreader lights fore and aft underneath. A 63-inch control box is equipped with everything needed to control your fishing day, including a Garmin 8612 multifunctional display, VDO tachometers, start/stop buttons and a freshwater washdown outlet. No such thing as a bad day at whichever office you select with this ride.

Accommodations

A sliding glass door leads below. Similar to a convertible layout, the beam makes for maximum overnight privacy and rest. Two arrangements are offered and share a commonality of features, including high-gloss horizontal walnut joinery and easy-care Amtico flooring.

Our test boat had a three-stateroom layout: a master forward with a queen-size bed, ample storage, a 32-inch high-definition television, and a private head with a fiberglass shower stall; upper and lower berths on the port side outfit the remaining two cabins and share the second head and shower. The starboard-side galley is a wall of cabinetry, manufactured stone counters, and a premium appliance package, including a 50-inch HD television. Booth-style seating is available in the salon, and a washer and dryer are located in the companionway. The two-stateroom version has a larger salon with an L-shaped lounge and high-low table. Either arrangement should appeal to any traveling tournament team.

Engine Room and Performance

Mechanical installations are neat in true Viking fashion, and the Awlgrip-finished engine room provides move-around accessibility. On centerline there is 79 inches of headroom walking in, and 61 inches at the forward bulkhead. Also at the engine room entrance are four digital displays that monitor the status temps of the Dometic refrigeration equipment, a set of analog gauges for main-engine oil pressures, water temperatures and digital tachs.

The 54 Sport Tower refuses to fall short of Viking’s high-standing seakeeping principles. We were able to sea-trial the boat in the open ocean off Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with the twin V-12 MAN 1550 CRM diesel engines hustling us along at 40 knots. At 1,950 rpm, the boat cruised at 34.6 knots and burned 58 gph per side with a nearly full load of fuel, full of water, and the owner’s gear. As we throttled up to 2,100 rpm, the boat recorded a respectable 36.4 knots, consuming 126 gph. This model performs similarly to the 54-foot convertible, a testament to Viking’s design and engineering department’s effort to push the envelope toward a smooth and dry ride by consistently refining the running surface.

Introducing new models is a way of life for the Viking Yacht Company, and the 54 ST is a prime example of the company’s heritage to build a better boat every day. I have run many express boats in my past career as a charter- and private-boat captain. Some of them were noisy, some were slow, some had so-so visibility, and some had terrible mechanical systems and installations. Express boats are basically a hybrid design—good at some things, not so good at others. But this 54 ST is fast, quiet and would be fun to fish on. Equally impressive, combined with its sister companies Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers, Viking is a unique builder, delivering its boats in a turnkey, ready-to-go-fishing manner. And who doesn’t like a ready-to-use, right-out-of-the-box product these days?

The Viking 54 sets new milestones of innovation while integrating ideas garnered from sales and owner feedback, as well as thousands of hours logged by our Viking demo teams on the tournament trail. “We’re in a constant state of refinement,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Everything from interior and exterior design and accommodations to performance, fishability and ease of operation are evolving.”

The 54 presents an eye-pleasing profile that’s unmistakably Viking, with signature design traits such as a gently sloping unbroken S-shaped sheer, aggressively raked stem, double chines, hull-side vents and deftly placed exterior feature lines.

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, the Viking Design and Engineering Department has optimized the 54’s running surface for maximum performance. Now an integral part of the design process, our in-house CFD allows us to run numerous virtual sea trials to fine-tune the shape of the hull bottom for increased efficiency. The hull is built with an engineered composite of fiberglass fabrics and coring that’s vacuum-infused with vinylester resin.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

viking yacht 54c

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

viking yacht 54c

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

viking yacht 54c

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

viking yacht 54c

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

viking yacht 54c

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

viking yacht 54c

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

viking yacht 54c

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

RV and Boat Show brings old vendors back to Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The RV and Boat Show continued today at the Stormont Vail Events Center Saturday.

The show included deals on fishing boats, wakeboard, campers and more. Tickets are 8 dollars for adults and 16 and under are free.

Lake Viking Marine has not been to the show in a few years and Luke Threlkeld has enjoyed meeting new people and wants people to have the summer they have been waiting for.

“The best part of these events is the variety of people you meet,” Threlkeld said. “There are so many people that boat differently than I do or than, uh, our regular customers do rather that be on the river or public lakes or small lakes or big lakes, so just the variety boating that people do is always interesting to get background on.”

The event will continue on Sunday, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-02-26 02:40

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
