Diamonds Are Forever is a stunning Bond-themed Yacht

By Adrian Prisca

Updated on August 31, 2017

diamonds are forever yacht owner

This superb vessel reminds us of the James Bond series. Diamonds Are Forever is a part of the fabled action series, a name that suits this piece of exquisiteness really well. Named by Mr. John Staluppi, its current owner and a huge fan of James Bond, this 61 meter long (200 feet) superyacht was built last year.

Even though it may come as a surprise, this gorgeous looking superyacht is equipped with a state of the art elevator. Able to accommodate up to 12 charter guests in 6 cabins, of which 3 are double guest cabins, 1 is a single guest cabin, all 4 located on the lower deck, while the other 2 are full beam panoramic master staterooms, decked with walk-in closets and dressing areas, this marvelous sailing unit features 4 decks.

One of the grand master staterooms includes a private office, ensuring a perfect business atmosphere. Needless to say, the guests that reside inside the master staterooms benefit of superb 180 degrees views of the azure seas.

The entertainment side of the Diamonds Are Forever is no second to none compared to the living facilities. A sun deck can be found atop the boat, accompanied by a large Jacuzzi, various spaces where travelers can lounge in the shade and a full sky lounge. Furthermore, the Jacuzzi overlooks the dining area, located on a raised spot, and the wet bar, decked with TV and a marble top.

On the main deck though, the idea of entertainment comes set among different dimensions – it is equipped with a beauty parlor, sauna, and fitness room. An interesting side of this deck is that the access towards it can be bared for guests, transforming it into a VIP section where only the richest are allowed.

In terms of interior decorations and design, the Diamonds Are Forever has met the hands of Evan K. Marshall / Ursonia V. The interior-designs brand comes from London and has already meddled into a number of yacht interiors for Mrs. and Mr. Staluppi. As for this exemplar, the word “custom” is the most suitable.

Adorned with quality furnishings, onyx, silver and gold leaf, Madrona burlwood, exquisite Italian marble, Marieux crystal and mother of pearl, the insides of the yacht have been taken care of up to the smallest detail possible.

Perhaps luxury puts a lot of weight on vehicles and boats, but in this case it was countered by the potent engines that power the Diamonds Are Forever. It can cruise at speeds of 15 knots and reaches a top speed of 16 knots. If travelling at around 12 knots, the superyacht can boast with autonomy of up to 4,800 nautical miles.

It’s time to say it – the Diamonds Are Forever is currently available for charter, for price tags between $403,656 and $446,760 per week in the summer season. During the trip, guests will be taken throughout the Mediterranean Sea, with stopovers in Croatia, Turkey, Montenegro, France, Spain and Italy.

Winter charter will be even costlier, reaching between $483,164 and $550,800 per week. The experience will be dramatically better, as Diamonds Are Forever travels throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas during the season, stopping at renowned locations like Grenada, St. Barths, Antigua and Puerto Rico.

Dykstra’s Exo superyacht concept borrows the idea of exoskeletons from nature to create wide open space below decks

Defined as a yacht over 78ft (24m), superyachts are run by a professional crew and are often built to eye-watering specifications (and budgets!)

For many years, the word superyacht was synonymous with fuel-guzzling motor boats. It is refreshing, then, to see that many superyacht designers in recent years returning to sail, alongside experimenting with form and function.

From 100ft wooden yachts fitted with fully electric systems – taking advantage of advances in clean energy – to luxury day cruisers and high performance minded designs, the world of the superyacht sailing boats continues to be an innovative space.

Even fuel powered superyachts are seeing a boom in creative design and are breaking boundaries in terms of what can be done to make huge luxury cruisers environmentally friendly while providing the ease of use and aesthetics to be expected in a £multi-million yacht.

Are diamonds really ‘forever’?

Thanks to a modern marketing campaign, the not-really-rare gem became the iconic stone for eternal love.

a gigantic diamond rest on the palm of a hand

When Gladys Babson Hannaford visited Florida State University in 1960, her lectures weren’t exactly part of the curriculum—and Hannaford, also known as the “Diamond Lady,” wasn’t your ordinary teacher. A diamond “expert” who gave hundreds of “educational” talks on the gems annually, Hannaford was actually employed by an ad agency with a simple, if ambitious, mission: Make American women want diamonds.

Diamonds aren’t rare, and their prices were set by at the time by the ad agency’s glittering client, global diamond conglomerate De Beers. Nor were diamond engagement rings a historic tradition in the U.S. Yet Hannaford preached that diamonds were precious gems with important emotional and historical resonance. “The enduring quality of a diamond is associated with an enduring love,” she told students, encouraging her female listeners to demand diamond rings from their future fiancés.

Hannaford’s lectures were just one facet of an ongoing, decades-long campaign to popularize diamond engagement rings. But the now-obligatory gifts were anything but traditional when De Beers began promoting the abundant commodity as a rare symbol of romance.

Royal love tokens

The Indian subcontinent and South America were the world’s primary sources of diamonds until the 19th century. But though the gems were long known in the ancient world, they only caught on in western Europe beginning in the 13th century. Diamond cutting came into its own during the Renaissance, when artisans used new tools to carve facets into the unpolished and rough stones, enhancing their sparkle and preparing them for use in magnificent jewelry.

These new faceted diamonds were breathtakingly beautiful. They were also rare, becoming symbols of wealth and luxury for the few who could afford them. One such jewel was part of history’s first recorded diamond engagement ring, given by Archduke Maximilian, future Holy Roman Emperor, to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. That year, one of the archduke’s advisors reportedly wrote to tell him to have “a ring set with a diamond and also a gold ring” ready for his betrothal to his aristocratic intended. Centuries later, mineralogist George Frederick Kunz saw the gift as evidence that there was already a vogue for diamond engagement rings among royals at the time.

But that fashion didn’t extend to ordinary Europeans, who exchanged everything from iron rings to clothing and livestock when they decided to marry. Meanwhile, royals like Queen Victoria continued exchanging valuable jewels for their betrothals. At her engagement in 1839, her intended, Prince Albert, gave her an engagement ring set with a jeweled snake, a popular symbol of eternal love at the time. The serpent was crafted from gold and large emerald, the queen’s birth stone, along with ruby eyes and a diamond mouth. (Victoria set a number of jewelry fashion fads during her lifetime, and is also credited with popularizing the white wedding dress .)

Discovering diamonds

In the 1860s, diamonds were discovered on the South African farm of Johannes and Diederik de Beer, two Dutch settlers who later sold the mine on their property to a British company. The mine that bore their name went on to be taken over by Cecil Rhodes, a British entrepreneur and notorious politician who began buying up newly discovered mines and eventually consolidated the region’s entire diamond industry. The conglomerate that resulted, De Beers, controlled virtually all the diamonds in the world by the early 20 th century.

But the discoveries presented a challenge for the industry: Thanks to the South African discoveries, the worldwide supply of diamonds had increased by orders of magnitude, and the company eventually owned up to 90 percent of the world’s diamonds. That put De Beers in the delicate position of somehow upholding the gems’ monetary value and their reputation as luxury items despite a glut of the gems, especially in the early 20 th century as the World Wars and Great Depression dramatically reduced demand in Europe.

As a result, De Beers and its then-owner, Ernest Oppenheimer, set their sights on the United Stated as an untapped market. But diamond engagement rings were still anything but the norm in early 20 th -century America. With the creative minds of Philadelphia’s N.W. Ayer advertising agency, however, De Beers set out to convince Americans that diamonds were a necessary luxury—one that symbolized eternal love and justified a high price tag.

Diamonds are forever

Starting in the 1940s, the Ayers agency bombarded American consumers with images of diamonds and stories of their rarity and symbolism. Magazine advertisements showcased engaged socialites and their diamond engagement rings. The company lent diamonds to prominent Hollywood stars and showcased their jewelry and sent representatives like the Diamond Lady to American women’s clubs, social groups, and even high schools to highlight the gems and create the subliminal connection between diamonds and marriage.

Royals got in on the act, with Queen Elizabeth visiting the De Beers mines in South Africa in 1947, and accepting a glittering diamond necklace from the government of South Africa along with a six-carat diamond from De Beers. Elizabeth’s engagement ring—a gift from her fiancé, Prince Philip, was designed by her future husband. It, too, featured a glittering provenance—the diamonds Philip used in the ring had been gifted to his mother in the form of a diamond and aquamarine tiara once owned by Tsar Nicholas of Russia. The iconic (and well publicized) ring helped fuel the public’s hunger for diamonds, and reminded consumers that men could get in on the act, too. De Beers pursued the male angle, too, targeting men by turning diamonds into symbols of a man’s economic success and social standing—all represented by the rock on his intended bride’s finger.

The marketing campaign was so ubiquitous that it resulted in a slogan widely considered the most successful of all time. In 1948, Ayers copywriter Mary Frances Gerety—who never married in her lifetime—came up with the “A Diamond is Forever” tag, which is still used by De Beers and the diamond industry today. It isn’t just pithy, scholars note : The slogan “also [conveys] the idea that the ring should not be resold because of its sentimental value,” thereby encouraging the purchase of multiple diamonds in the case of multiple marriages.

De Beers’ goal was ambitious: to turn diamonds into a “psychological necessity” and make a diamond a must-have engagement item despite income, financial pressures, or cost. And it worked. According to the World Diamond Council, global jewelry sales are worth more than $72 billion a year, with the U.S. representing the world’s largest diamond market. Meanwhile, De Beers no longer controls the majority of the world’s diamonds thanks to new mine discoveries, competitive market forces, and the emergence of lab-grown diamonds.

A quick jaunt around Instagram reveals that the diamond engagement ring trend isn’t going anywhere any time soon. In fact, social media is now considered a primary driver of diamond sales, with a majority of newly engaged couples reporting they announce their engagement on social media. Despite a reported decline in the sale of engagement rings since the covid-19 pandemic, diamond retailers are counting on a turnaround. As the Diamond Lady said back in 1960, “Diamonds are the backbone of a jeweler’s business”—all thanks to some savvy marketing.

Superyacht Diamonds Are Forever launches in spectacular fashion

Livorno, Italy, 26 November – serial superyacht owner John Staluppi is no stranger to superyacht launches, having built some 17 superyachts to date which include the current world record holder for the fastest superyacht – The World Is Not Enough . His latest yacht, the 61m Diamonds Are Forever , is a displacement yacht built by Benetti in Livorno, but while her top speed may signify a change of pace on the water, there was no let-up during her build.

Staluppi bought the yacht while she was part complete, and in just 18 months undertook a complete transformation of the original design which included shaving 0.3m off the keel to reduce her draught, adding an extra deck up top, reconfiguring the interior layout from the main deck up, adding a Schottel jet pump stern thruster, and moving the upper deck air ducting to create a giant upper saloon.

The launch ceremony, attended by John Staluppi and his wife Jeanette, yard management and workers, broker Peter Thompson from Ocean Independence, designer Evan K Marshall and, exclusively, Boat International, proved a spectacular occasion, with a live performance of the theme song to the film Diamonds Are Forever followed by an action sequence where Bond grappled with a balaclava’d bad guy while suspended halfway down the superstructure of the yacht.

The yacht is due to leave the yard in December and will launch straight into her first charter before the year is out.

‘We built the boat to offer charter guests something different to what they’re used to,’ John Staluppi told BI. ‘She has plenty of room, plenty of storage, plenty of space. It has been a real pleasure working with the team at Benetti.’

Look out for the full feature on the yacht in a future issue of Boat International, along with video features from the launch and interviews with the key players on the iPad version of the magazine.

Arrow Monaco CEO Yerin Hobson

One of the many things I’ve learned after decades of writing about superyachts is…there’s always more to learn. And that’s why I’m so excited Arrow Monaco owner and CEO Yerin Hobson agreed to talk to me recently. Arrow Monaco is yacht and project management company with a team of 40 people (in offices in Monaco and Ft. Lauderdale) who are currently managing almost 20 new builds and five refits.

And since they handle everything from helping an owner find the right yacht designer down to the finest construction cost and detail, I’ve learned just how important they are in the superyacht industry even though they usually operate behind the scenes and below the radar. With roots in the practical skills needed for day-to-day large yacht operations at sea and on shore Yerin’s team can do “almost anything.” And as Yerin explains, when it comes to managing every aspect of superyacht design, construction, and operation, being able to have the technical know-how and experience to do “almost anything” comes in handy on a regular basis.

BS: I’ve been to plenty of shipyards. And I’ve visited lots of yacht design studios. But I never really understood how critical companies like Arrow Monaco are to the superyacht industry. Can you give me an example of how Arrow Monaco manages a new build?

YH: Absolutely. A good example is an 80 meter new build project we signed the day before the Monaco Yacht Show started in September last year. We were appointed at ground zero, so one of the first things we did was write the technical specification along with interior and exterior designer for the entire project.

Then we approached three different shipyards and selected one based on the price and the technical information that they came back with. After that, we entered a four-month R&D phase that includes all the technical documentation and to signing of the build contract. The importance is the detail. Writing the specification from the very start of the project helps us protect the client against future issues. And as of today, there has not been one single variation to contract or cost change on this project.

Netflix Is In A Bind With 3 Body Problem Season 2

Google suddenly reveals surprise android update that beats iphone, ukraine has developed 15 kinds of long range strike drone and has sortied them against russia s oil industry.

BS: can you tell me a little bit about how you formed the relationship with a client that allows you to sort of have that ability to be so exacting right from the beginning?

YH: Trust is everything. For this specific client, I went to meet with him when he was chartering a large yacht in the Caribbean. When it comes to building trust, nothing compares with sitting across the table with the client, designers, and shipyard reps.

When the client understands that we really know what we are doing, and you have a team that has been doing this for a long time, it's key. Trust is everything because this relationship is for life. It's not just building the boat. It's then operating the boat. Dealing with refits. It's a lifelong relationship. They can also trust us became we are not brokers and have zero commissions.

BS: So, what happens after you successfully navigate a owner through a multi-year new build phase? They love the boat. Then what? What do you do next?

YH: The next phase actually starts as the management team gets involved on the operational side about two years prior to launch. We help the owner find the right captain and crew along with many other details. And then finally at six months out, the entire crew arrives for training and familiarization.

Naturally, if we have built the boat and know every detail, every change, every system, then logical that we’re the right people to manage the yacht. That way if we have a problem, we supervised most of the systems installation alongside the shipbuilder so we can give the owner all necessary information to find efficient solutions.

BS: You do way more than just new build management, right?

YH: It's broken down into five categories: operational management, crew management, financial management, technical management and safety and security management. The client should be able to see where every cent is being spent, and it should be managed by somebody. I say this because this is our business model is similar to a family office style of operating a yacht that’s 100% transparent. All our accounting, compliance and crew systems are online so our client’s always have the information they need in real time.

I guess the real success story of Arrow how we deal with people. We value our relationships. We respect the people we work with and we strive to keep everybody happy while always getting the job done and most of all, protecting our clients every step of the way.
