Do I have to know how to sail to rent a boat? What is the Open Sailing Checkout?

Yes, someone in your group, who will be in the boat with you, must pass our Open Sailing Quiz!

Nantucket Community Sailing requires all customers, both members and non-members, of the Jetties Sailing Center, who would like to rent a sailboat for open sailing, pass our Open Sailing Quiz (for all sailboats). The Site Manager may also engage you in a more thorough verbal check, after the Open Sailing Quiz, if they are concerned about the safety of your group. This will include a check of the following skills: understanding of wind direction, leaving/returning to the mooring, ability to sail all 3 points of sail (upwind, reach, downwind), tacking/jibing, safety position (sails luffing, boat stopped). Ultimately, it is at the discretion of the Site Manger, as to who can safely sail in the given conditions. The Open Sailing Quiz must be done by the single individual, in the presence of JSC staff and not more than once per day. We will also talk you through:

  • A discussion of the Open Sailing Area
  • A discussion and review of safety equipment on-board and how to call for help/assistance (review of handheld radio use; safety cards in the boats; and review of 'safety position')
  • A discussion of when the boat is due back to the NCS mooring

If a customer fails to pass an Open Sailing Quiz or verbal checkout, they will be refunded for the rental and required to take a private lesson before re-testing. For members and non-members, the checkout is part of the two-hour rental - and the time used for the checkout will be taken out of the rental time.

Do I have to know how to SUP or Kayak to use this equipment?

Not necessarily. Our instructors are able to offer you quick tips right on the beach to get you feeling comfortable and launched. We also have a resource guide at the site with additional tips for paddling, which you're welcome to review before heading out.

Do you limit rental activities when it's really windy?

Yes. Safety is always our first priority. If it's too windy for us to safely monitor equipment and people on the water, we'll start limiting the type and number of rentals. For example, we may not be renting big sail boats off of moorings (Rhodes 19s, Marshall Cat 15s), but we might still be renting SUPs and kayaks. Or we might rent big sail boats, but require that students put in a reef, or only use the main sail and not the jib. Rental activity on windy days is always at the discretion of our Site Manager Often this is a judgment call, but please remember, we have your and our safety in mind.

I damaged a piece of equipment (NCS or private) – now what?

First off, please let us know! When you return to the beach, please let the JSC Manager know what happened. We'll work with you to fill out an incident report form, so we have a record of what happened and can properly orchestrate repairs and contact the Environmental Police or Harbormaster if-necessary. Per the terms of the NCS waiver, customers accept full responsibility for all losses, costs, and damages incurred as a result of their participation in the activity.

I want to check out Coatue – can I paddle or sail over?

Our Open Sailing Area prohibits sailing and watersports customers from crossing the ferry channel, so no, we do not allow people to visit Coatue.

I want to check out Brant Point – can I paddle or sail over?

Yes, Brant Point is within the boundaries of our Open Sailing Area and customers are welcome to paddle down and beach their SUP or kayak. *You may not ROUND Brant Point, as that would put you in the commercial Ferry channel, which is outside of our Open Sailing* Area. We ask that if people do beach their boards (and remember, you still need to return to the JSC within the allotted time for your rental) that you stay near the board. In other words, when we perform our 'head counts' on the water, we need to be able to see you – with your equipment. So don't beach it and wander off! We also ask that you use great care when walking your equipment up onto the beach. Scratched bottoms are slow for everyone!

How old must a child be to join on equipment?

At NCS, we have life jackets (USCG Type III-approved) for children as young as 5 years old. Children must wear a US Coast Guard-approved Type-III life jacket (PFD) when using our equipment.

Can I bring my pet with me?

NCS has a no pets policy at the Jetties Sailing Center. Service animals are allowed.

What is your Rental / Lesson Cancellation Policy?

All bookings, for members and non-members, will require a credit card to secure your reservation and/or pay in advance. If you need to cancel, please contact the NCS Office at (508) 228-6600 or the JSC at (508) 228-5358 (do not leave a message) or email, [email protected] . A NCS staff member will confirm your cancellation and/or rebooking. Please note our cancellation policy for rentals and lessons:

JSC Members:

If you cancel within 24 hours or are a no show, there is no refund for lessons and for rentals you will be charged in full the published rate. If you cancel within 48 hours, you will be issued a 50% refund of the lesson or will be charged a 50% of the published rate. If you cancel prior to 72 hours, you will receive a full refund for lessons and will not be charged for rentals.

Non Members:

If you cancel within 24 hours or are a no show, there is no refund. If you cancel within 48 hours, you will be issued a 50% refund. If you cancel prior to 72 hours of rental/lesson, you will receive a full refund.

Please note that if NCS needs to cancel your rental or lesson, NCS will attempt to reschedule. If NCS is unable to reschedule, a full refund will be issued.

As for Weather Cancellations -- Nantucket is a "marine location" with a "marine forecast". This means the wind and weather can affect this rental/lesson. If the wind or weather is not conducive to safe operation, Jetties Sailing Center will cancel the rental/lesson. Customers will receive a full refund for rentals/lessons canceled by Jetties Sailing Center for any reason. Customers may reschedule any rental or lesson in the future at no extra cost. Please remember, in a "marine forecast" the weather can change quickly. Please respect Jetties Sailing Center wind and weather judgements for cancellation. JSC will use the cell phone on file at time of registration to contact you.

What are your General Site Safety Rules?

All individuals participating in NCS programs or using NCS equipment at Polpis Harbor or Jetties Beach are expected to follow these general safety rules. These rules will be reviewed with students on the first day of a new session and posted at the Jetties Sailing Center:

  • USCG-approved Type-III PFDs are required at all times when in a motor or sailboat, on a dock, in a kayak or paddleboard, near the water's edge, or in the water. The PFD must be in good condition, properly worn and zipped.
  • Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times when at an NCS Site or using NCS equipment. If a customer of the Jetties Sailing Center chooses not to wear shoes while paddle-boarding or kayaking, it is at his or her own risk. Shoes are mandatory on sailboats.
  • No knives, drugs, alcohol, or other harmful weapons or substances are permitted.
  • Personal property (except Epi-pens) is the responsibility of the student and not NCS.
  • All sailors will maintain proper etiquette, respect and seamanship at all times: No bullying, pushing, shoving, horseplay, fighting, hitting, and profanity. No disruptive behavior, disrespectful gestures, actions or language. Physical violence and bullying (teasing or derogatory/hurtful comments) are not tolerated.
  • NCS staff, peers, equipment, and the environment must be treated with respect at all times. No littering on land or water.
  • Students must stay in the area designated for class or rentals at all times; all boats must stay within hailing distance of the Head Instructor's boat, or in the case of a rental, within the Open Sailing Area.
  • All students/customers will exercise great care in the use of Nantucket Community Sailing's sailboats, safety boats, and equipment.

Do I have to wear a PFD (Lifejacket) at NCS?

Yes. Personal flotation devices (PFDs or life jackets) must be in good condition, worn, and zipped, at all times when a student is on the docks, in a boat (in a sailboat, kayak, paddle board or motorboat), in the water, or at the water's edge. PFD's must be U. S. Coast Guard Type III-approved vests and must be properly fitted to an individual's size and weight. Nantucket Community Sailing will provide life jackets to every student, and will assist students in finding properly fitting PFDs at the beginning of every class. Students are welcome to bring their personal life jackets from home. If a student elects to bring a personal life jacket, it must be U.S. Coast Guard Type-III approved, in good condition, and must fit properly. A PFD that is ripped, or missing a zipper or straps, is not acceptable. If an instructor feels that a PFD does not fit a student properly, he or she will replace it with a properly fitting NCS-owned PFD for the remainder of the class/class sessions.

Customer and Member Terms

  • The NCS Site Manager will make the final call as to whether conditions are safe for sailing. NCS deserves the right to cancel anytime.
  • The customer or member is ultimately responsible for their own safety and for checking weather conditions, tides, and currents prior to rental.
  • Nantucket Community Sailing reserves the right to revoke any membership at any time, without refund, for abuse of the membership, equipment, or violation of NCS policies.
  • All Coast Guard, State, and local laws must be observed at all times when using NCS equipment. If you are unclear about these laws, please ask an NCS staff member.
  • The customer or member is responsible for inspecting boat and safety equipment prior to leaving the beach or mooring and requesting any equipment that might be necessary (such as radio, lines, blocks, etc.)
  • By taking the boat, the customer or member acknowledges that the boat is safe and seaworthy and properly equipped and agrees to the terms of NCS membership and rentals.
  • The customer must stay in the Open Sailing Area unless given explicit permission by the Site Manager, and provided they detail a float plan.
  • Only those individuals who have signed an NCS waiver and agreed to the terms of the rental may participate.
  • PFDs must be worn, and zipped at all times.
  • Alcohol and smoking are not allowed on NCS boats or at NCS sites. Use of alcohol before or onboard the boats will result in suspension of sailing privileges.
  • NCS boats may not be used for any fee-for-service based activity unless it is conducted by NCS staff as part of an NCS program.
  • Skippers must report all accidents, injuries, and collisions to the Site Manager. Failure to report any incidents may result in suspension of privileges. Staff must complete an Accident/Incident Report for documentation purposes.
  • NCS Sailors/Students/Members are responsible for their own and any guest's behavior and safety. Unruly, boisterous, and/or dangerous behavior may result in the suspension of the members' sailing privileges. Respect all safety rules and the rules of the road.
  • No rental sailboat can leave the mooring without a radio onboard. A radio check must be performed before leaving the mooring. The radio must be on, turned to an audible volume for the conditions, and on VHF 67.
  • Swimming is not allowed.
  • Upon return, the customer or member must notify the Jetties Sailing Center shack of any problem that occurred during the rental, including any damage to an NCS boat or another boat.
  • The customer or member is financially and legally responsible for any damage to any boat or equipment, NCS-owned or privately owned.
  • Per the terms of the NCS waiver, customers accept full responsibility for all losses, costs, and damages incurred as a result of their participation in the activity.
  • Pets are not allowed on NCS boats, unless certified as a service animal.

What is the Open Sailing Area?

Nantucket Community Sailing's Open Sailing Area (OSA) at its Jetties Sailing Center is defined by the following boundaries: The west jetty, to the North; the channel to the East; and First Point/Brant Point to the SE/S. Please refer to the laminated map for more detail. Nantucket Community Sailing must be able to see a rental boat on the water at all times from its Jetties Sailing Center , so open sailors are encouraged to follow this mantra: If you can see us, we can see you. The OSA was defined according to NCS safety resources, including the number of safety/rescue/tow boats on site, the number of staff available to assist open sailors, and the range of a handheld radio. Open sailors who do not obey the OSA will be hailed by radio or notified in person by a safety boat, and will be asked to return to the OSA. Open sailors who ignore the boundaries of the OSA more than 3 (three) times in a season will no longer be able to rent NCS boats, at the discretion of the Site Manager and No NCS members will be approved to go beyond the OSA. Additionally, the beaching of large sailboats (Rhodes 19's or Marshall Cats) on Coatue, Monomoy or any other shore within the OSA, is prohibited.

How do I return the equipment?

All customers/members using equipment at the Jetties Sailing Center are required to pay for and/or check the equipment out at the customer service shack prior to using the equipment. All customers/members must check back in with the customer service shack upon the end of their rental.

About Nantucket

Why is Nantucket a good sailing destination?

Nantucket, a crescent-shaped island off the coast of Massachusetts, is often heralded as one of the East Coast’s most enticing sailing destinations. As both an historical whaling hub and a present-day enclave of coastal elegance, its charm extends far beyond its cobblestoned streets and quaint lighthouses. At Yachting.Rent, we believe that Nantucket’s true essence can best be experienced from the vantage point of its surrounding waters. As you consider your next maritime adventure, let us illuminate why Nantucket, with its blend of history, nature, and luxury, is a top-notch choice for sailors and marine aficionados alike.

The island’s geographical placement makes it a veritable haven for sailors. Situated at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sound, it offers a variety of sailing experiences catering to both novice sailors and seasoned mariners. The gentle waters of the Sound are perfect for leisurely day sails, where one can admire the sun-drenched dunes of Jetties Beach or the iconic Brant Point Lighthouse. For those seeking more adrenaline, the open Atlantic beckons with its invigorating winds and expansive horizons. Nantucket’s maritime climate, characterized by mild summers and brisk breezes, ensures an optimal sailing environment. The island’s well-maintained harbors and marinas, equipped with modern amenities, make docking a breeze and allow sailors to transition effortlessly from sea to shore.

Beyond its natural allure, Nantucket’s rich maritime legacy augments its appeal as a sailing destination. The waters surrounding the island whisper tales of legendary sea captains, intrepid whalers, and historic trade routes. As you navigate these waters with Yachting.Rent, you’re not just on a voyage; you’re stepping into a living tapestry of New England’s maritime history. The island itself, with its meticulously preserved 18th-century architecture, offers a step back in time. After a day at sea, moor your yacht and explore the Whaling Museum or stroll through the historic downtown, where boutique stores and gourmet eateries await.

Yet, what truly amplifies Nantucket’s stature as a premier sailing destination is the confluence of nature, history, and luxury. While the island’s natural beauty and storied past are undeniable, it’s the modern luxuries and services, such as those offered by Yachting.Rent, that make the experience truly sublime. With us, your Nantucket sailing adventure is accentuated by unparalleled service, tailor-made itineraries, and access to the finest yachts. Whether you’re seeking a serene sunset sail, a multi-day exploration of the New England coastline, or an opulent event aboard a luxury vessel, Yachting.Rent ensures your maritime dreams are realized in style.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Nantucket

Sailing around Nantucket, an island gem nestled off the coast of Massachusetts, is an experience like no other. As the salty breeze caresses your face and the azure waves ripple beneath, you’re faced with an important decision: to sail aboard a traditional sailing boat or a modern catamaran. At Yachting.Rent, we appreciate that every sailor’s preference is as unique as the tide. Thus, to help you make an informed choice, we delve into the distinctive features of both vessels and how they align with the sailing conditions around Nantucket.

Sailing boats, often evocative of timeless maritime traditions, offer an authentic and intimate connection with the sea. Their deep hulls and singular keel provide stability, making them a classic choice for those looking to navigate Nantucket’s varying waters. The slender profile of these boats makes them adept at cutting through waves, especially when venturing out into the Atlantic or braving the sometimes unpredictable currents of Nantucket Sound. Sailing boats also possess an inherent charm, with their tall masts and billowing sails painting a romantic silhouette against the New England sky. Onboard, the experience is cozier, with the deck and cabins exuding a nostalgic ambiance. For purists who cherish the age-old rituals of sailing and yearn for a closer bond with the water, a sailing boat is an ideal companion.

On the flip side, catamarans have steadily gained popularity among modern mariners, and for good reason. These twin-hulled vessels offer an unparalleled level of stability, thanks to their wide beam. This translates to minimal heeling, ensuring a more comfortable experience, especially for those new to sailing or those who prefer a steadier platform. Catamarans, with their expansive decks and larger living spaces, are perfectly suited for group outings, parties, or extended trips around Nantucket’s many coves and bays. Their shallow draft allows them to anchor closer to shore, granting easier access to Nantucket’s secluded beaches and inlets. Moreover, the dual engines in many catamarans provide better maneuverability, particularly in tighter marinas or docking situations.

Given Nantucket’s diverse maritime landscape, both vessels have their merits. If you’re planning to explore the island’s rich history, with stops at various harbors and a desire to experience sailing in its purest form, a sailing boat might be your vessel of choice. Conversely, if you’re eyeing a leisurely cruise with friends and family, with ample space to relax, sunbathe, and perhaps host a quaint onboard party, a catamaran would be a fitting pick.

In conclusion, whether you lean towards the romantic allure of a sailing boat or the modern comfort of a catamaran, Nantucket’s waters promise an unforgettable adventure. At Yachting.Rent, we pride ourselves on offering a fleet that caters to every sailor’s dream. Let us partner with you in curating a Nantucket sailing experience that resonates with your vision, ensuring that every moment spent on these storied waters is nothing short of magical.

My family and I rented a very nice 19 foot boat from this business a few days ago and spent an absolutely fantastic afternoon on the water exploring the harbor and the beaches nearby. It was a really special family afternoon and we could not have done it without this rental agency. Honestly before this summer I did not know that you could even rent a motor boat on Nantucket. Fortunately I walked by the stand and got the idea. The service was awesome. You sign up online and pick the boat you want. When we showed up they had upgraded me to a bigger better boat. Then after the first hour of the trip it was clear the engine wasn't working perfectly (but it was OK) and so I actually had the cell phone of Brandon, the guy who helped us at the dock, and he literally came out and swapped out another bigger and better boat for us! Talk about customer service! The boats are solid and sturdy but nothing fancy. Honestly people rent them every day so there's no way you could possibly get a fancy brand spanking new boat through a rental agency. But they are solid and they work and it's just a fantastic way to explore Nantucket Harbor and the surrounding beaches. Truly an amazing day and again the customer service by Brandon was absolutely 10 out of 10. He could not of been a more helpful guy.

Nice young men helping out on the boat, but there was zero to little instruction other than "do you know how to drive a boat? 'yes' "cool, here is where the flares are if you need them' luckily we didn't! The boat, a Boston Whaler (or Wailer) as my husband referred to it, had seen better days on the sea. Hard gaining speed However, what's not to love about being out on the water? We packed sandwiches from Proviaons, cruised around the island, and jumped in and swam for a bit. It was a great excursion

Took a boat out to the points for the day. It was one of those perfect summer days, and still we were the only ones on the beach there. Walked the shore, swam and napped in the sun. life doesn't get better than that.

Photo of Di L.

My party rented a 16 ft motorboat for half a day. They took us on a test drive of one of their boats, but the motor broke almost as soon as we left the dock. We were promised an upgrade to another boat later, but when we returned they had rented out the upgrade boat and offered us a third boat. The third boat worked fine, but our heightened expectations were let down, which was slightly irritating. They also didn't specify where to dock when we came back, and didn't warn us about possible engine stalling. However, they did let us keep the boat out a couple hours longer than contracted. The IBR guys at the wharf are chill and friendly, but don't seem like the most put-together crew. Then again maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety.

best way to experience nantucket! book a boat online, spend the day exploring coutue, catch a fish, go clamming

Amazing day on the water!

Photo of Lucy D.

Grab some suncreen and head off to enjoy the beautiful weather. You can bring your own life jacket if it meets coast guard regulations. Better have reservations on sunny days. Would not recommend renting a boat unless you have experience.

This place rocks Nantucket. Make reservations and ask for Jimbo! A great way to see the island.

No better way to see Nantucket then from the water. Island Boat Rental has everything you need to enjoy the water, Ive rented many many times from them. The guys are knowledgable and friendly. The boats are clean and have all the safety equipment, they also have some really cool floating bean bag chairs on a few boats. I highly recommend them when you come to Nantucket. Ask for Jim....

Photo of Marcia M.

This is the best way to see the island! My girlfriends and I rented a boat for half a day and had an absolute blast! Pack a few sandwiches and your swimsuit and you're ready for a day on the water. Whether Nantucket is your longtime love or you're just visiting, this is the way to spend a day on island.

Photo of Jackson N.

love island boat rental. we rented the 19ft boat for a half day, did some fishing and dropped anchor at coatue for lunch and explored the beach. such a great easy day and prices are reasonable. great way to see nantucket

sailboat rental nantucket

Island Boat Rental is just terrific!! We are so fortunate to have come across this great group. The boats are well maintained, and they have a good variety to accommodate different size parties. Super friendly dock hands, good instruction and we were on our way. Highly recommend checking them out next time you are on the island!

Boat Cruise Nantucket

A Florida man, two abandoned boats in Nantucket and Provincetown, and one big question: Why?

The sailboat Buenos Aires was pulled out of the water on Feb. 17 after being abandoned in Nantucket Harbor months ago.

When the abandoned sailboat was first spotted off First Point on Nantucket, the island’s harbormaster, Sheila Lucey, feared someone had gone overboard. Rescue crews searched the water around the weathered 32-foot vessel but found no sign of distress. And so the sailboat was tied to a large mooring in Nantucket Harbor.

But for Lucey, the distress was just beginning.

For the next nine months, she and authorities tried to track down the owner and have him remove his boat. This ordeal of unanswered calls and unkept promises only ended this month when the derelict vessel was mercifully towed away to be scrapped.

Along the way, Lucey found out that the owner, whom officials identified as Cody Fenstermaker of Key West, Fla., had abandoned another boat — this one in Provincetown.

“I was surprised,” Lucey said. “But not really.”

Abandoned boats are relatively common in states like Florida, where an owner may leave a vessel in a designated anchorage area and never return for it, said Lance Wiser, the master chief at Coast Guard Station Brant Point on Nantucket. But in a small harbor like Nantucket, “it’s pretty uncommon,” he said.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police considers a vessel to be abandoned when it has remained “moored, grounded, or otherwise attached” to private property for more than 30 days without consent or has been found “adrift or unattended in or upon” state waters and constitutes a potential hazard.

“With the harbor getting so busy during the summer, it really makes it a big deal when there’s a boat just abandoned out there,” he said. And a big deal the situation became, with the Nantucket Current dubbing the Buenos Aires the harbor’s “most infamous vessel.”

“I feel like the condition of the boat always plays a factor in whether people actually care about the boat or not. This boat was not in good shape,” Wiser said. “Eventually, it turns into, what is the boat actually even worth?”

After calls poured in about the abandoned boat, marine officials discovered Fenstermaker had never bothered to switch the registration after buying the boat from a Nantucket resident, Lucey said, who said she believed he purchased it “before last winter.”

Fenstermaker could not be reached for comment. He returned a call from a Globe reporter on Monday but hung up before anything could be said.

But on Facebook, his profile features a number of photos of him steering various sailboats and out on the water. And in March 2022, a short piece about Fenstermaker in the Key West Citizen described him as a marine diesel mechanic who had moved to Key West “to set in motion his dream of sailing from the Florida Keys to Massachusetts.”

He may have realized that dream, but Lucey soon wished she had never laid eyes on his banged-up boat.

By her count, officials reached out to Fenstermaker to hold him responsible for the boat more than 60 times. Lucey never spoke to him directly but Fenstermaker left voicemails and sent text messages. He often promised he would come to Nantucket — and did a couple of times — to prepare the boat for removal. Then he disappeared again without a word.

The last time Fenstermaker made contact was in December or January, Lucey said.

“It was definitely a significant incident that took a lot of man-hours on our part,” including hours spent keeping the boat afloat and making sure it was not a pollution hazard, she said. The only other derelict boat that caused as much hassle was more than a decade ago, when a 67-foot fishing dragger named Miss China was towed off Brant Point.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police were alerted to the abandoned sailboat on Dec. 14, a spokesperson said. Working alongside the Coast Guard, officers located Fenstermaker in Florida and have “tried connecting with the individual since to take responsibility.”

All the while, the vessel sat idly in the harbor, drawing attention as a public nuisance , before running aground in Monomoy during a storm in late January. When the Nantucket Current reported the development earlier this month, it caught the eye of Provincetown Harbormaster Don German.

The abandoned Lightfoot sailboat in Provincetown.

Since the previous summer, German had also been dealing with a sailboat abandoned by Fenstermaker, a Tartan 34 called Lightfoot.

In his five years as harbormaster, it was the first time a boat had been left behind like this, he said. Boats in poor repair were sometimes left on moorings, but not abandoned completely, he said. German was stunned to learn Nantucket was dealing with the same situation.

“This is probably going to end up being quite a story,” he said with a laugh.

In May, the same month the Buenos Aires was abandoned in Nantucket, the sailboat was towed into Provincetown harbor and put on a mooring. The owner of the mooring told German he had not granted permission for it to be used but said the vessel could stay there for the summer. By June, officials realized that the boat was not being attended to.

“This is a small town, so not too hard to figure out when somebody’s gone,” German said.

German said he spoke with Fenstermaker, who is registered as the owner of the boat, when he was still in town in early June. The two had a “normal day-to-day business conversation,” but then Fenstermaker departed and left the boat in Provincetown, German said. He has not been able to have any direct communication with him since then.

In early October, someone cut the vessel free from its mooring, sending it adrift before it ran aground a beach in Truro. Now Lightfoot is tied to the wave attenuator — a structure installed in the harbor to reduce the impact from waves that can also double as a mooring — in Provincetown.

German has called Fenstermaker about 30 times and recently sent him a certified letter in Key West. If he does not respond, German said he will work to have the vessel officially declared abandoned, allowing him to obtain the title and “pass it on to somebody that might take better care of it.” As of Monday, German had still not heard from Fenstermaker.

Lucey, meanwhile, is deeply relieved. On a recent Saturday, a crew from the Harwich-based Robert B. Our Co. brought the vessel to New Bedford by tug boat after lifting it onto a barge with a crane. The boat is not repairable — its keel is broken, among other things — and will be scrapped, she said.

“It was a really good feeling to watch it go,” she said.

In Massachusetts, abandoning a vessel is against the law , and those who do so “willfully” can be fined up to $10,000. The Environmental Police are investigating, Lucey said, and the spokesperson said because “this is an ongoing enforcement matter, no other information can be provided.” The department is not involved in the case in Provincetown.

Lucey did not say how much the towing cost but said she intends to make Fenstermaker pay. Despite how difficult it has proven for authorities to contact Fenstermaker, Lucey said she and the company are confident they will be able to recover the cost from him “one way or another.”

“Good luck with that one,” joked German.
