Tahiti Ketch

Tahiti Ketch is a 29 ′ 11 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by John G. Hanna and built by From Plans starting in 1928.

Drawing of Tahiti Ketch

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Plans for the TAHITI KETCH first appeared in a 1935 issue of ‘Mechanix Illustrated’. Since then, hundreds have been built around the world. As can be expected, hull and rig dimensions vary widely.

THE TAHITI KETCH DESIGNED BY JOHN HANNA

  • the builder

John Hanna designed many yachts throughout his career. Some of these were custom designs for clients, and others were published to the pages of magazines such as Mechanix Illustrated . Many of those published designs were created to be easily built by amateurs, with inexpensive methods and materials, and reliable results.

The most encompassing book about Hanna is John Stephen Doherty’s A Ketch Called Tahiti (1987); the book focuses on the Tahiti Ketch design and many examples of her builds and voyages, but also details John Hanna’s life and other designs. The following short bio is summarized from the pages of A Ketch Called Tahiti :

John Griffin Hanna was born in Galveston, Texas on October 14, 1889. As a youngster he was creative and experimental; he built his own boat from a kit when he was a teen, and then modified the design when it was later damaged. He was an avid reader of The Rudder and Yachting —publications that he would later have a professional relationship with.

As a young man he pursued an interest in aviation, and worked in NY in a small crew building aircraft. A few years later, in 1913, he stayed on his brother’s ranch in Texas for a while as he designed and built his own airplane, and when this venture was not as successful as hoped, he went back to work in the industry a year later to design, layout on wood, and hand carve propellers.

In 1917 he married his wife Dorothy, and settled in Dunedin, Florida. He had moved to Florida in 1916 to purchase the Aburndale News and act as editor and publisher. During this time his writing talents were well-recognized; he was known as an expressive and communicative writer. Some say that his ability and style with writing grew from his deafness, and his choice to communicate predominantly through the written word. In 1903, as a young teen, Hanna had contracted scarlet fever, which destroyed his hearing and left him deaf. (Soon thereafter he suffered a trolley accident when he couldn’t hear the warning bell, and his right foot was severed at the ankle and he thereafter used a prosthetic limb.) While in Florida be began to turn his attention towards designing yachts, but he then sold the newspaper and moved north again during WWI for aviation work.

After the war he returned to Florida, and published his first yacht design Pelican , a thirty-foot ketch in MotorBoat magazine in 1919. He also wrote a regular column for the magazine called, “Heaving the Lead,” and began earning attention in the maritime industry.

According to the research of Stephen Doherty, the evolution of Hanna’s most popular design, the Tahiti Ketch, began in 1921, when Hanna published designs for a lighter, shallower, and narrower thirty-foot double-ended ketch with dual cockpits called Orca . This design may have been inspired by Hanna’s own boats, including a 28-foot cruiser named Beachcomber and a 29-foot fishing boat named American Girl , which he called an “Americanized design […] evolved from the Greek Sponger model” and imagined might be quite comfortable with a large cabin instead of a fish hold. Using these boats and designs for inspiration while continuing to study double-ended vessels from around the world, he began to refine his ideas for a comfortable cruiser and published the results as the thirty-foot double-ended ketch Neptune in 1923.

Some years passed and a number of Neptune designs were built and sailed, and in 1935 Westy Farmer, a friend of Hanna’s and the editor of Modern Mechanix (later Mechanix Illustrated ) was beginning production of the magazine’s annual issue “How to Build 20 Boats.” Farmer proposed that the issue should republish the Neptune plans, including a few improvements and some additional construction drawings, photos of the first-build, Carcassonne , and experiences of the five boats already sailing. It was decided that the design should be renamed Tahiti , as inspiration during the Great Depression, and Hanna’s article proclaimed that, “In short, whatever it takes to get to Tahiti and back, this ship has.”

Also included in John Hanna's Tahiti Ketch article with an inspirational illustration of the vessel sailing, was a short poem: Poke her nose to the mornin' sun, On a tide that's ebbin' speedy- Start her sheets to the breeze fresh run On a slant for old Tahiti

And with that, the Tahiti Ketch was born and marketed as the boat that could cure wanderlust. With inexpensive plans and a simple approach, the type was built in backyards around the world to be sailed near and far.

MODIFICATIONS ON THE DESIGN

As a boat popularly built by amateur boat-builders, Tahiti Ketches are found with a variety of modifications and personal touches—and a bit of experimentation. Online searches and sale listings, as well as A Ketch Called Tahiti , show a variety of rigs to increase performance in light winds, differing interiors, as well as changes on deck. A slightly larger-sized production line offered with a variety of rig options, the fiberglass Dreadnaught 32 was inspired by the Tahiti Ketch “Adios,” and dozens were built by Dreadnaught Boatworks in California. In the 1970’s, an article in Mechanix Illustrated (March 1972) featured Glooscap II, built by Gordon Baird of Canada, with an enlarged design and some modern elements and tips, and it is this article that inspired Ben Severns, the builder of our Evelyn, as he was deciding which boat design to build in his backyard:

“According to the article, over the years the Tahiti design was considered the most perfect, stable, all around little deep water sailor ever conceived. Prior to the introduction of fiberglass, many of the original designs had been built by do-it-yourself builders around the world. They had logged many ocean crossings and over a dozen world-circling voyages, including one that had made two circumnavigations.” (Benjamin O. Severns, The Life and Adventures of a Country Lad page 143)

It seems that with this publication a new generation of Tahiti’s were built; my father, then in his twenties, remembers watching one as it was built nearby his home, and enjoyed reading this and a later article in WoodenBoat (Issue 8, 1976) so much that he saved them—in 2016, he found his original copy of Mechanix Illustrated as he was cleaning my grandmother’s attic.

This was such a treat. We were expecting something different and instead we got a true experience. The captain was incredibly personable, knowledgeable and eager to share his wisdom with our group. You start with a history of the handmade sail boat which is fascinating.  Then a safety plan and on-board rules. Based on the weather the captain will plan a course and begins the sail. We brought a bunch of assorted nibbles yet were having so much fun we didn't get a change to eat them. Captain Doug will provide you with a wonderful history of the bay and a thrilling time!

Despite the storm and rainy weather we had a blast sailing Taihoa with Captain Doug! Definitely a memorable experience jumping on the waves and leaning almost at 45degrees during turns Captain Doug made the experience so personable with great stories, allowing us to assist him sailing the boat and going extra mile to ensure our Birthday Girl (sailing was a surprise birthday gift) felt special on her day! We weren't able to sail full 4 hours due to weather conditions, and Captain was so nice to offer us another sailing mini trip in the future for free! Yay! Very excited to go back and sail further in the bay!

Woo! This experience was worth every penny! Captain Doug is professional, friendly, and knowledgable. The crew made sure we were more than safe, and before we knew it we were out in the bay enjoying the unbelievable sights! Within minutes of departing we spotted a sea lion frolicking in the water, brown pelicans flying in formation feet away from the boat, a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate bridge, and Alcatraz. One of the best experiences of our trip, hands down!

A friend told me about Taihoa just as I was trying to decide what to do for my birthday. What luck! Captain Doug is kind, knowledgeable, and a ton of fun. 6 of us had a great time on the water. We got to participate a bit in the sailing, and spotted tons of wildlife while we were relaxing in the Bay. It felt like we were in good hands the whole time, and it was great to share in Doug's passion for sailing and history. Highly recommend!

I took my mom out sailing for her birthday and she enjoyed her time out on the water. Doug responded very quickly to my inquiry, was well prepared and informed. The ride is as relaxing or as engaging as you want it to be. My sister in law steered the boat for a little while. This is much nicer, private and much more intimate experience than other sailing experiences I have been on. Thanks again!

We sailed 3 hours with Doug. Weather was perfect, a little chilly at the end, always bring warm clothes, windbreakers, when sailing in the Bay. Doug is an awesome captain- very informative, he takes safety seriously, would definitely sail again and recommend to others! Thank you Doug!

Thanks Valentina! You're right about the clothing for sure. Always better to have gear you don't end up using as opposed to needing something and not having it with you. Fair winds to you and Gene. Hope to see you onboard again some time soon.

I rarely write reviews. I have high expectations of most restaurants and business I visit, based on previous experience or a friends recommendation. When I do write a review, like for Captain Doug and Sail Taihoa, it's because my experience exceeded my expectations. Captain Doug is a gentleman, a comedian, a historian, passionate about travel, and above all, a world-class sailor that will make any time you spend onboard well worth it. We booked a bay tour with a first-time and nervous sailor. After our trip, I could swear the newbie said he's ready to sail the ocean. Captain Doug's passion for sailing is addictive, and you walk away wanting more time onboard his ship. I recommend booking time aboard his ship. Both he and his ship have a wonderful story he'd be happy to tell you about.

Wow! My son and I were planning a graduation trip to San Francisco and I thought it would be great fun if we took a ride on a sail boat. I had no idea where to start but opened Yelp and looked for high rated soap boat experiences. I am so glad I found Captain Doug and the Taihoa! The entire experience from his prompt response to great prep to sailing time was all top notch! We loved it all! Thank you, Capt'n Doug and Taihoa for the memories of a lifetime!

My husband I had a wonderful sailing experience with captain Doug for our 5th year wedding anniversary. He was so nice, accommodating, and made our experience so much fun and unique. We truly appreciate him educating us on the history of the boat and getting us to participate in sailing. We would definitely recommend him to anybody wanting go sailing in the bay.

Tsarskoe Selo, the Tsars' Village at Pushkin

tahiti ketch sailboat

Tsarskoe Selo, in the town called Pushkin near St. Petersburg , is one of the area's most impressive sights. The palace complex of Tsarskoe Selo (which means “Tsars' Village” in Russian) includes attractions that are popular draws on their own: the Catherine Palace and parks, the Alexander Palace and parks, and associated outbuildings that have been restored or renovated into exhibition spaces. The entire complex is a part of the UNESCO-protected Russian World Heritage site and will dazzle you with its beauty so completely, you'll be seeing tsars!

Sights at Tsarskoe Selo

When you visit Tsar's Village for the first time, you'll want to be aware of four broad-category sights. On a second visit to the royal complex, consider taking in some of the secondary attractions or temporary exhibitions on the grounds, most of which have separate entry fees and require time dedication.

  • Catherine Palace : The Catherine Palace is one of two grand palaces at Tsarskoe Selo. Though it was built by Empress Elizabeth and named for her mother, Catherine, it was the better-known Catherine the Great who made the palace her place of summer residence, employing the work of architects and craftsmen to customize the palace to her particular tastes and requirements. Visitors to the Catherine Palace will feel Catherine the Great's presence and her love of luxury within its sumptuous rooms. The Catherine Palace wasn't used by any Russian tsar as regularly as Catherine the Great, so her influence in the palace's appearance remains. The Catherine Palace is also where visitors can see the recreated Amber Room , which glows with the careful placement of tons of many-hued Baltic Sea amber.
  • Catherine Park : Visitors have plenty to feast their eyes on here; the Catherine park is much more than the name implies. The grounds include the gardens and outbuildings associated with the Catherine Palace, many of which have been renovated and can also be viewed from the inside. Take a ferry around the Great Pond or explore the park on foot while you envision Catherine the Great out on a stroll with her beloved dogs, who are buried in a special cemetery designated specifically for them.
  • Alexander Park : The Alexander Park is less groomed than the Catherine Park, but given its closeness to the Alexander Palace, it isn't difficult to imagine Nicholas II's children playing here. The infamous mystic, Rasputin, was also buried in the area directly after his death, but so reviled was he that the body was disposed of after the Revolution.

Planning Your Visit to Tsarskoe Selo

Seeing Tsarskoe Selo in its entirety will take a whole day or more, so plan to arrive early and leave late, especially during the summer months when tourist numbers swell. Most guided tours are in Russian. English-language tours are subject to guide availability, and Tsarskoe Selo doesn't accept advance booking for individual visitors to the museum.

Almost every section of Tsarskoe Selo requires its own entry fee, so if you're on a budget, you'll want to have an idea of ticket prices and the complete cost of admission to all of the sights you want to see. Catherine Park and Catherine Palace tickets must be purchased together. You can buy tickets to the Alexander Palace once you're there, but the Alexander Park requires no entry fee.

Prepare to overpay for refreshments and snacks at the palace complex. Look for vendors selling popular Russian street food, such as blini, to dine on the run and save both time and money. Cafes within the palace complex give you the opportunity to rest your feet while you refuel.

To learn more about ticket prices, hours of operation, and both temporary and permanent exhibitions, visit the Tsarskoe Selo website, which can be accessed in both English and Russian languages.
