Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club launches its new home in the Barbican

Men looking out of the window at Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club

Like many businesses during the pandemic the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club has undergone a major transformation and is celebrating after re-opening its doors to members old and new once again.

Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club exterior

The club is housed in a former dairy built in 1902, later to become part of the Robert Lenkiewicz studio before housing the Plymouth Image Bank and has been carefully refurbished blending its impressive history with a bright, modern, welcoming bar and lounge in which to relax, with inviting decor and a purpose-built community space with cooking facilities.

Founded in 1877 and proud to bear the Royal Warrant, the club has dispensed with old fashioned rules, brass – buttoned blazers and flag obsession, often associated with yacht clubs. Instead visitors will find a friendly bunch of people working together to provide a warm welcome to all whether you have arrived by boat or not!

Visitors may also find the Commodore serving behind the bar or the Vice Commodore heating pies in the kitchen. The conversation flows, with talk of the weather and tides as well as friendly and engaging hospitality.

Membership is currently open to anyone who has an interest in the water and the comprehensive drinks list on offer is at attractive club prices.

Members can dine-in at the club – locally made pasties and pies are on the menu but you can also order takeaways to be delivered to and eaten in-house – choices include traditional fish and chips, Indian, Chinese, Asian, pizza and tacos!

For those with their own boats, sailing or motor, and anyone interested in crewing a regular calendar of day and weekend trips exploring the Devon and Cornish coastlines is offered, or even visits further afield.

“We are so pleased to have found the ideal home for our members, guests and visiting yachtsmen and women.” said Julie Morton, the club’s Vice Commodore.

“We are looking forward to welcoming new members to our ranks over what we are sure will be an exciting first summer.”

Plymouth's historic Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is set to go up for sale.

Built in 1688 as part of the Royal Citadel, the imposing property that has its own access to the water,   has been used as a club house since 1896 and it is the first time on living memory it has ever gone on the market.

It is looking for bids above the guide price of £750,000.

Michael Easton, Director at JLL in Exeter, which is handling the sale, said: "The sale will attract considerable interest due to its truly outstanding position on the waterside. This is to secure the long-term future of the club and members will be looking for alternative premises, or to continue in some capacity in the existing building if the marketing programme allows for this."

The Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club has a long history of organising Dinghy and Yacht racing in and around Plymouth.

The yacht club is thought to be one of the last remaining privately owned freehold sites on the water’s edge in Plymouth Sound.  It has  direct access to the water from its own dinghy park and has outstanding 180-degree views across the sea from Mount Batten to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall.

The freehold title includes a waterfront dinghy park, changing facilities and the sailing office.

Mr Easton said: "We hope to attract interest far and wide. The club has been run both for its members and as a function and wedding venue for many years and is available as a trading venue with revenues of circa £400,000 per annum.

"There are approved plans to improve the access and visibility from Madeira Road which we feel will also be of some benefit to a future owner. With the people of Plymouth now looking ahead to the schedule of events taking place in Plymouth in 2020, where better could this be celebrated."

The property is available by informal tender with bids invited by no later than midday  March 15 2019.  The business will continue to trade during the process.

Plymouth's Corinthian yacht club is now a sensual latin dance centre

Cuban dance teacher Misael Cordero takes over 17th Century Hoe edifice and will bring top latin dancers to the city

  • 05:00, 19 FEB 2023

Latin dance maestro Misael Cordero, right, in party mood at one of the latin nights in the Corinthian

Plymouth’s historic Corinthian is starting a new life as the city’s centre of sensuality by becoming a latin dance venue. Cuban dance teacher Misael Cordero has taken over the 17th Century waterfront edifice and has already started classes in salsa, bachata and kizomba, with top dancers due to strut and sway in workshops and shows.

Mr Cordero received the keys to the Madeira Road building in January and has wasted no time in establishing it as Plymouth’s go to locale for lovers of sensual and intimate rhythms. Operating as a regular drop-in for coffees and bar drinks from 10am during the day, it can also be hired out for weddings, parties and business meetings..

But at night, the party lights come on and music and dancing take over. Mr Cordero is running classes, which are free for novices from 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginners and more advanced dancers can then stay on for later lessons, at just £8 a pop.

And Mr Cordero is bringing some of the world’s leading batacha exponents to the city next month. The Tropical Sensual Days weekender, on March 3 and 4, will feature tutorials and performances from Colombian Juan Soto, Argentinian’s Stephanie Lucero, Demetrio Ciavorella, from Italy; Spain’s Sandra Sanchez and Plymouth’s own Cole Lockley.

Mr Cordero will have his dancing shoes on too. The dancers will host workshops from 10am until showtime begins at 8.30pm, with a live bachata band leading the party.

Mr Cordero wants more people to take up latin dancing and is keen to stress the mental and physical benefits of hitting the floor. He said: “During Covid people suffered with their mental health, they were afraid to come out. But dancing helps with your social skills. Everyone is welcome here. Your age, background and even size don’t matter.

“In the UK the main latin dance is salsa, but latin rhythm is so much more. There is cha cha cha, solero flamenco, rumba, and more. Bachata is hugely popular right now. Shakira dances Bachata. It is from the Dominican Republic and very sensual and intimate.

James Lloyd-Davies has been brought in to manage the Corinthian. He’s also a bachata dancer and said: “I’ve been dancing for two or three years now. I came to watch my mum dance and ended up taking up bachata. I’d never danced before.”

Mr Cordero added: “He’s now got a Cuban girlfriend, so not only did he find dance, but also love and a job. He was my student, but now he’s my manager - and best mate.”

The Corinthian , perched on the lip of the Hoe, dates from 1688, and was used by the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club until it was sold to Plymouth businessman Steve Langmaid in 2019. Built as part of the Royal Citadel, the Corinthian has its own access to the water, and was used as a clubhouse from 1896 until it was put on the market with a guide price of £750,000.

The yacht club relocated to a building at The Parade, on the Barbican . Mr Langmaid has now leased the Corinthian, built into the rockface, to Mr Cordero, who has started some refurbishment and more improvements are planned. The Corinthian will be serving food from April 1.

“I love this place,” Mr Cordero said. “There is so much that can be done here: weddings, birthday parties, daytime conferences. People can get married here, we have a licence and you can get 80 people in.

“My favourite room is the tower. The views are incredible, you can see all of Plymouth. And from next month we will be opening the Boatyard, our outdoor space.”

Mr Cordero moved to the UK from his native Cuba in 2006. Initially based in Cardiff, he began teaching in Plymouth in 2009 and moved to Britain’s Ocean City permanently three years later. He runs the Misala Cubana salsa company and has been organising Plymouth’s Tropical Summer Festival for several years.

The June 2 to 5, 2023, dance spectacular will be the seventh and will be the final event at the Plymouth Guildhall before it closes for a major refurbishment. Mr Cordero said: “I’m a bit of everything: business owner, dance teacher, and DJ. Since 2009 I have been working hard to create a vibrant latin dance scene in Plymouth. I miss Cuba, and will always miss Cuba. But not as much because the dance is within me.”
