The J Class yacht Endeavour is for sale – a rare chance to buy one of the most iconic yachts ever built
- Toby Hodges
- February 3, 2016
The J Class Endeavour, Britain’s worthiest America’s Cup challenger to date and often described as the most beautiful J Class ever, is still on the market
Arguably there couldn’t be at a better time to buy one of the most prestigious yachts ever. In recent years the J Class has enjoyed a complete resurgence ( see our J Class guide here ). The result makes for mesmerising viewing, as these most elegant, timeless classics are raced by the world’s best and regularly finish within seconds of each other. It’s like one-design racing for museum pieces.
We had the chance to sail Endeavour in December 2016 – and get this EXCLUSIVE VIDEO FOOTAGE
The J-Class Endeavour powers to windward at the 2012 St Barths Bucket
We have only seen Endeavour race competitively once in the last decade. It was fresh after her 18-month refit at Yachting Developments in New Zealand, when she stole the show at the St Barths Bucket in 2012. This showed the potential of the yacht with famous sail number JK4 in the modern fleet of carbon-rigged Js. Since then however, little has been seen of Endeavour as her owner favoured private cruising.
The J Class wave shows no sign of slowing however. There are more Js competing now than ever before. The Hoek-reconfigured J Class Topaz (J8) launched from Holland Jachtbouw in spring 2015 and Svea followed two years later.
The J Class yacht Endeavour arguably remains the jewel of the fleet. She is the yacht that has come closest to winning the America’s Cup for Britain. Her story reflects the history of the J Class and has helped shape the modern fleet we know today.
Endeavour was designed by C.E. Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholsons in steel in 1934 for aircraft manufacturer Sir T.O.M Sopwith. She was the only J to beat the original Rainbow and considered the most dangerous British challenger to the cup ever. On launching, Endeavour was declared ‘the perfect boat’ by someone that really knew his shapes, Nat Herreshoff.
The J-Class Endeavour in 1934, racing King George V’s Brittania
Sopwith took a scientific approach using his aeronautical experience, and the innovations lavished on Endeavour included the likes of four-speed winches, the first windvane linked to a dial by the helm, and a four sided jib with two clews and sheets, dubbed a ‘quad’.
Following a crew strike over pay, Sopwith replaced the 13 pro sailors with amateurs shortly before leaving for the America’s Cup in the states. This, together with taking off more and more ballast during the series, was largely seen as his undoing.
The J-Class Endeavour after decades in a mudberth
Endeavour sat in her Solent mudberth for three decades following the war, in the hands of a variety of owners. She was once saved from scrap and even sank in the Medina River in the seventies.
Beken’s picture shows the state she reached, a wreck with no rig, keel or interior. But it was when Elizabeth Meyer bought her in 1984, that her resurgence, and in time, that of the J Class, really began. Meyer had Endeavour re-configured by Dykstra Naval Architects, shipped to Royal Huisman and fully restored, before cruising and racing her all around the world.
J-Class Endeavour’s interior today, styled by John Munford
Endeavour underwent an extensive refit again in 2010/11 at Yachting Developments in New Zealand. Dykstra Naval Architects was responsible for the construction, sail plan and deck layout, and Jon Barret, who oversaw the yacht’s first refit as captain at Royal Huisman in 1989, project managed the refit.
The work involved the removal of 40T of material, including 14 deck winches. The remaining winches, hydraulics, electrics, engine and generators were all replaced over 100,000 man-hours. Endeavour left New Zealand with a new deck structure, new rig and sails, a new deck layout, an engine room upgrade and a new crew interior.
Her €17.5m asking price today is perhaps typical for a J Class. But to become a custodian of a cruise and race ready Endeavour, and at such an exciting time, would be priceless.

Endeavour Yacht Corp.
Endeavour Yacht Corp.was founded by John Brooks and Rob Valdes in Largo, Florida. Brooks got started in the business first with Charlie Morgan, and later with Ted Irwin, Vince Lazzara (an early owner of Columbia Yachts), and sons Brad and Dick. Rob Valdes was the younger brother of Dick Valdes, cofounder of Columbia and then later Lancer Yachts. Rob began his career at Columbia, and persuaded by Vince Lazzara, then joined Gulfstar Yachts. It was at Gulfstar where Rob met John Brooks. To get their fledgling company off the ground Ted Irwin, who was then located in Tampa Bay, gave Brooks and Valdes the molds for his 1970 vintage Irwin 32. Endeavours’ in-house production and design person Dennis Robbins took the Irwin 32, modified it, and named it the Endeavour 32. They built about 600 in all. Encouraged by its success they looked around for a sister ship. Looking for boats along the Miami River, Brooks and Valdes found an old abandoned Ray Creekmore design which Dennis also modified. The 34ft design was cut in half, they added 3 feet to the midsection, and created the Endeavour 37 of which 476 were sold. The early Endeavours (E32, E37, and E43) were simple, straight forward boats with outboard chainplates, short rigs, and strong, moderate hulls using a combination of polyester resin and fiberglass woven roving and multi-directional chopped strand fiber (MCSF). These “Florida” boats sacrificed windward sailing performance for shoal draft, which is a requirement of the Florida Keys and Bahama Islands. Dennis Robbins went on to run Ted Irwins designs and later to the mega yacht company, Trident, in Tampa. At this point Bob Johnson (now of Island Packet fame) joined Endeavour as the principal in-house designer at Endeavour for about a 3-year period and had a hand in developing the E43 (1979), the modification of the E32 (1980), and possible modifications on the E37 (1977). The 1980s ushered in a new era in boat building and the pressure was on for more performance-oriented designs and updated construction methods. The charter market was growing and they wanted faster, more comfortable boats. Endeavour began to respond to this need by introducing the Endeavour 40 in 1981, but it wasn’t until America’s Cup designer Johan Valentijn was commissioned to do the Endeavour 38 (1984), and Bruce Kelly to do the Endeavour 33 and 35 (1984), that the company made a real effort to improve performance. Where earlier boats had been cored with 4–6” squares of plywood, the newer Endeavours used Klegecell closed-cell polyvinyl foam coring and incorporated “a multi-axial steel reinforced ‘force grid’ bonded to the hull for stiffness.” By 1985, Valentijn had designed the Endeavour 42 and 51 and Endeavour was now almost exclusively building center cockpit boats for the charter trade and cruising families. These boats were easily handled, moderate design boats suitable for offshore work, with taller rigs and inboard chainplates. At this point Endeavour stopped using the Klegecell core and returned to using end-grain balsa in the sheer-to-waterline areas, plywood where compression strength was needed for thru bolting hardware, and incorporated a structural grid system built up of triaxial fiberglass encapsulated urethane foam. In 1986 John Brooks closed the doors and sold the company to Coastal Financial Corp. of Denver and stayed on as product manager. By 1988 the company was building 100 boats a year with 50 employees, down from 200 boats a year and 300 employees in 1984. Despite their upgrading the line of boats they were hurt by declining sales and competition with its own products on the used boat market and Endeavour Yacht Corporation effectively went out of business in 1988. Coastal Finance Corporation sold it again in 1991, and after several more changes in ownership, it became the builder of multihulls called the Endeavour Catamaran Corporation. Although it’s a different company today primarily producing cruising catamarans, they also produce several custom sailboats in the 45 to 59ft range. During this period Bill Symons, a builder of fiberglass multi-hulls on Long Island, had a 28-foot cat-rigged catamaran designed by Rob Ladd, and he eventually licensed the molds to Endeavour. However with the changes in ownership Symons transferred the molds to America Cruising Yacht Corporation (a reorganized Irwin), but claims that Endeavour copied the molds before doing so. After making some design changes, the Endeavourcat 30 was introduced in 1992. America Cruising introduced it’s AmeriCat 3014 but soon went out of business. Symons then took the molds to Hutchins (Com-Pac) and sold the boat as the Symons 30. Used Endeavour Catamaran Yachts For Sale
The Endeavour Yacht Corporation was founded in 1974, with the goal of producing monohull sailboats particularly suited for cruising Florida’s shallow waters. The company was based in Largo, Florida. Original owners were John Brooks and Rob Valdes, in association with Charley Morgan, Ted Irwin, and Vince Lazzara.

The company first introduced the Endeavour 32, using the molds from the Irwin 32. It was a success in the marketplace as it reflected a successful sailboat design and boats perfect for Florida waters. In time, the company built some 600 of the 32-footers.
Following on its success, the builder then introduced the popular Endeavour 37, which offered shoal draft (a useful feature although at the expense of sailing performance, particularly to windward). There were almost 500 Endeavour 37s launched over the course of its production. The Endeavour 43 and 40 came at the end of the decade and heralded a new era of boat building that put greater emphasis on sailing performance, as did the Endeavour 33 and 35 models designed by Bruce Kelley.
Boats were designed with an aft cockpit configuration, as well as versions with a center cockpit aimed for the growing demand in charter fleet operations as well as the needs of cruising families. These center cockpit yachts expanded to versions of the Endeavour 38, and all models of the current Endeavour 40 and 42. The Endeavour 51 and all larger Endeavour models were all center cockpit sailboats, which became synonymous with the Florida builder’s expertise.
Unfortunately, the boat building industry soured in the late 1980s, and the ill-conceived luxury tax proved deadly to many boat builders, including Endeavour Yachts. This political fumble effectively cut 25,000 jobs in industries that supported the pleasure boat segment of boating.
Long-time boater and successful engineer Bob Vincent purchased Endeavour Yachts in the early 1990s and slowly moved its direction and focus from monohull sailboat manufacturing to the new game in town, the capable cruising power catamaran. From his initial power catamarans to the latest models in his line before his unfortunate passing in 2020, Endeavour Cats were recognized in the industry as solid, well-engineered, and great platforms for those choosing a power catamaran for the trawler lifestyle.
His early models included the Endeavour 38, which quickly became a successful catamaran design ideal for couples and continues today. As with all Endeavour cats, Vincent incorporated propeller tunnels in the hull bottoms to improve efficiency and decrease depth. Each of his power catamarans came with luxurious and separate stall showers in staterooms, and the space utilization of each model provided excellent privacy, plenty of storage and efficient speed and range. With a 600-gallon fuel capacity, the Endeavour 38 had a range of over 1,000 miles with its twin Yanmar diesels.
What is most noticed aboard all Endeavour cats today are solid and beefy scantlings somewhat different from many other power cats, particularly those from French and other sailing catamaran builders who moved into producing power catamarans. Most, if not all, power cat builders evolved their power boat lines from sailing cats, where the emphasis is on saving weight and getting needed strength through structural design. On these lightweight boats it is not uncommon to have floor panels squeak and flex when crew move about the boat. Endeavour cats are more solid and therefore better able to withstand the rigors of extended cruising.
Anyone who looks closely can see the difference. The Endeavour TrawlerCats are all about engineering and strength over aesthetics. Workhorse strength over graceful lines. This mindset has paid off in customer satisfaction and long-term livability of the boats.
The early lines also included power cats at 40 feet, 44 feet, and 48 feet. Each model puts a premium on interior space, and couples doing the Great Loop could have a great time on any one of these power cats that offers as much living space as a larger monohull powerboat. Engine access under stateroom berths is reasonable and offers good access for service and maintenance. Generally, the saloons on all the Endeavour TrawlerCats are much appreciated by owners who are living aboard as they cruise for extended periods.
What is particularly important to someone in the market for a cruising boat today is that a used Endeavour Cat is probably in very good structural and overall condition, as its inherent strength provides a longer lifespan than many fiberglass structures not as heavily constructed.
The last models of the Endeavour Cat line were the Endeavour 440, 450, and the Endeavour 500 with its unique SkyLounge that maximized space normally associated with an enclosed flybridge. Its appeal was not its looks, but its value and very practical enjoyment while cruising.
Some of the latest production models are powered by two outboard engines, as the company explored the benefits of simplified construction and not dedicating interior spaces for engines and running gear.
And with outboard power, Bob Vincent was rather keen on the fact that one can lift the boat’s entire propulsion systems—particularly props and shafts—completely out of the water when the boat is docked. He felt that to be a major benefit that could reap many rewards by less prolonged immersion and inevitable corrosion in salt water.
Bob Vincent also designed and manufactured a fiberglass dinghy specifically for use on his catamarans, which fit perfectly in the transom davit system he also designed for easy launch and retrieval. Having an easy-to-use davit system and dinghy on a cruising power catamaran is far and away the most versatile and safe way to have a dinghy while cruising. When it is easy to pull the dinghy out of the water, it completely eliminates the need to tow it, have it stolen, or otherwise deal with a large dinghy that gets used a lot when cruising.
The line of Endeavour Catamarans will remain a lasting value for cruisers well into the future, as its rugged construction and intelligent engineering make it simply a solid choice for those wanting to cruise under power.

Endeavour was designed for the 1934 America’s Cup by Charles E Nicholson and built at Camper & Nicholson’s in Gosport for Sir Thomas Sopwith. Along with Shamrock, Endeavour is one of the two remaining J Class yachts which actually raced for the America’s Cup. Indeed she came closer to winning the Cup than any other Challenger. Against Harold S Vanderbilt’s Rainbow, Endeavour won the first two races and was considered to be the faster boat. With better tactics Rainbow then took wins in Races 3 and 4. Sopwith protested against one contentious manoeuvre but lost and Rainbow went on to win 4-2. At home, one headline read, “ Britannia rules the waves and America waives the rules ."
After the Cup she raced successfully in England but was partially wrecked in 1937 after breaking a tow. Since then she has had numerous owners, refits and repairs.
Endeavour was fully restored by Elizabeth L. Meyer over five years at Royal Huisman and this initiative, and her restoration of Shamrock, stimulated renewed interest in restoring and building replica J Class yachts.
Endeavour was relaunched on the 22nd June 1989 following a refit with Dykstra Naval Architects and sailed for the first time in 52 years. Meyer organised the first J Class racing that September when Endeavour raced Shamrock V in Newport RI.
She had a major refit in 2010/11 with modifications by Dykstra Naval Architects with a new sail plan and deck layout, the work carried out by Yachting Developments in Auckland, New Zealand. That refit included a new deck structure, new rig and sails, a new deck layout, an engine room upgrade and a new crew interior. Fresh from refit Endeavour proved she has performance potential, winning the 2012 Saint Barths Bucket against Shamrock V and Velsheda.
