Hey Gang: Who feels like settling an argument with my wife and I? I know, tough task. It’s time to repaint our 1980 Oday 30. We both agree that we will go with a navy hull. But it’s not that simple. What about the water line and the below the water? My wife thinks that the keel and below the water should be navy along with the hull above the water, with maybe a thin red waterline. What? I’ve never seen a sailboat where the keel and bottom match the hull above the water. my vote is to have a navy hull above water, a thin white line for the water line, then maybe a red below the water to the keel. Other than personal preference, am I wrong to want a different color below the water line? Thoughts?
Navy hull, red boot stripe, white bottom at least between the boot stripe and the waterline. My vote, but even in my house I don’t get to vote on colors.. learned that a long time ago.
White bottom paint looks great when the boat is splashed, a few weeks later when the crud starts to grow they look horrible. Dark colors do a better job hiding the crud. If 2 coats of paint are going one, white is a good base coat. When you see white, it will be time to repaint.

I'm in the, go with your wife camp. I try not get to attached to little things like that and let others, who really have feelings about them, have their say. Also, I like the distinctive clean look your wife's design proposes. I might change it to a white boot stripe, though. -Will (Dragonfly)
Definitely a dark color from the water line down.

These are decisions that are tough to resolve. I lean to the blue, white, red bottom a classic look. But it may also be the photo. Click to expand
Blue hulls look stunning. Dark colored hulls can be hotter and will show scratches more than white colored hulls.

I agree with a darker bottom color. I have a navy blue topside, red waterline stripe and VC-17 bottom paint (color: original). White shows a lot of muck and staining from what I see with others where I splash and sail. Of course, that is how she was when i acquired her a few years back and I haven't the initiative or the $$$ to make a change. On the other hand, when it comes to disagreements with the "Admiral", I always try to keep in mind that every hill isn't worth fighting for (apologies for the mixed metaphors).
As others have said, dark colors on the bottom hide growth. That means you won’t see the growth until it is too late and has become a real beard. This will not only slow you down. It will make the bottom look green (not blue) with white spots where the barnacles are. It will also make the boat look like a derelict. That is probably not the effect you seek. If the topsides are blue, the waterline red, the bottom should probably be white. Unless your water is exceptionally clear, the bottom won’t be visible at the mooring, so she won’t see it much anyway. There are also reports that whales are attracted to boats with blue underwater sections for scratching their backs, since they resemble other whales and it’s hard for them to see the difference between blue and whale-black underwater. White underwater looks more like it might be an Orca, so other whales would tend to avoid white-bottomed boats.
Navy Hull. Nice big white boot stripe. Lighter blue bottom paint is what I have and I love it.

I thought the photo with navy blue hull and black bottom looked great. That sounds like something your wife could buy into as well. Whales becoming enraged by red hulls has me a little spooked right now!

Blue Hues: Pro Tips
ElephantStock's interior design expert Elimar Lobo Sáenz shares her tips for incorporating bright blue hues:
“Interior designers have dubbed bright blue as one of the top interior design trends for 2023-2024. Using richer blues along with lighter blue textiles will give to your space a serene Santorini-inspired vibe. If you’re a minimalist through and through, consider adding pops of dark, true blues for a vivid touch to your room. Incorporate this unbeatable hue into your decor as a constant reminder of the seaside and clear skies above.”

When it comes to a nautical color palette, you have to pick and choose your pops of color with the sea in mind. Paint three walls white with one pool blue accent wall. Combining various shades of azure and sapphire is essential to the nautical aesthetic. Highlight the natural beauty of the ocean with a piece of photo-realistic wall art . Your color palette should revolve around marine scenes, with aqua blues and seafoam greens taking center stage. Choose beige-colored rugs and flooring to mimic the look of sand and summon memories of the sea lapping at the shore.

Transport yourself to your favorite beach by turning your home into a coastal cottage. Experiment with white woods and striped details to capture a resort-inspired ambience. Hang some faux-window wall art to create the illusion that your living room overlooks the crashing waves. Play with pastels to create a softer effect. Incorporating light pinks and pale peaches is a foolproof technique to brighten up your space. Use chic chartreuses and true blues to mimic a tranquil seascape.

Nautical isn't only preppy sailboat shades. You can also lean more tropical in your overall décor. Look for wall art on the quirkier side , and don’t be afraid to use sunny yellows and muted orange hues. To offset the more vivid tropical tones, focus on muted teals and light greys. As long as the majority of your décor looks fresh and understated, feel free to have fun with warm pops of color.

There’s something to be said for sticking to the basics. If you’re obsessed with the original nautical color palette, there are a few rules that will help you achieve this classic look. First, find a piece of wall art that incorporates the most important shades: red, white, and sky blue. Once you find your perfect painting, pull from the colors within the print. Navy blue is a timeless choice for furniture, while an off-white backdrop will never go out of style. Don’t forget to add shades of red to contrast the baby blues.

Seashell shades and kelp-inspired colors will help round out your array of blues. Place aquatic houseplants in your living and dining area, and accessorize with dried coral. Play with sage green as a refreshing accent color, and make your focal point a muted teal. Each room should feel airy and bright, so powder blue is a color you can’t use enough of. Don’t forget to choose wood that looks like sand, and add bright white furniture to contrast the pervasive tan.

Yoko Chow, interior designer and owner of Yoko Chow Design LLC, shares her advice for nautical décor :
"Blue and white are almost pre-programmed in [our mind] when we decorate with a nautical theme. Lighter blues are known to [conjure up] a calming and peaceful disposition, while dark blue creates a dramatic contrast."
Chow sticks to several tried-and-true tricks for properly executing a nautical interior. She continues, “White walls with a navy sofa and some patterned pillows in off-white and blue and white will set the tone. Additionally, you can use brown as a [neutral] tone to supplement the overall color palette; indicating [a down-to-earth interior], and the importance of home.”
Chow then follows up with some final tips to complete the look, “You can [also] include an accent wall covered with rustic reclaimed wood panels, incorporate wicker furniture, or add nautical rope decor. [Just] be careful not to use excessive amounts of dark blue, as it can create a cold feeling."
No matter how you choose to incorporate the theme, you can rest easy knowing that nautical colors will never go out of style. Take the plunge and dive deep into a nautical color palette . You won’t regret it.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River
A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.
Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.
Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.
An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.
The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.
The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.
The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.
Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.
The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.
Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
