Jeff Bezos’ $500M yacht has a 246-foot support ship, Lauren Sanchez figurehead

Much like Amazon, Jeff Bezos’ $500 million superyacht offers every bell and whistle imaginable, from A to Z.

The colossal, triple-masted Koru began its career serving the world’s third richest man this week, cruising the Mediterranean around Mallorca.

The 417-foot schooner first left Rotterdam in the Netherlands for sea trials in February. Dropping anchor in Mallorca put its jaw-dropping size on full display.

It also showed the extent of Bezos’ fleet: Not only did the Koru sail into harbor, so did its support vessel, Abeona, a mega-boat in its own right, the luxurious fast-launches used to move between the two — and aerial support in the form of his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez’s personal helicopter.

Sanchez also seemingly serves the fleet’s mascot, with the Koru’s figurehead, a part of traditional large sailing ships, modeled after her.

The Koru is the world’s tallest sailing yacht. Its three huge 229-foot masts power it to 20 knots. It’s also the biggest billionaire’s yacht which can move under sail-power alone.

The masts are so tall that Dutch officials considered dismantling the 95-year-old Koningshaven Bridge to allow the vessel past the 131-foot span on its journey from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam through Rotterdam to the North Sea.

That controversial plan was scrapped after local backlash, including residents being urged to toss eggs at Bezos’ “latest toy,”  the New York Times reported . The superyacht, previously known as Y721, was instead towed to a shipyard in Rotterdam, downstream of the bridge, without its masts.

Bezos, 59, and the bikini-clad Sanchez, 53, appeared ready for the summer as the pair soaked up the sun aboard Koru, a Māori word for loop or coil that symbolizes new beginnings — possibly a coy reference to their relationship.

Sanchez started secretly dating the Blue Origin founder in the summer of 2018. Bezos then announced in January 2019 he and his wife Mackenzie were divorcing after 25 years , while Sanchez finalized her split from husband Patrick Whitesell later that year.

Sanchez plays a critical role in the Bezos fleet: As a helicopter pilot, she was seen landing on the Abeona. She was also at Bezos’ side when he took the wheel of the Koru.

Koru was first seen under construction in 2021 at Oceano’s yard. The company is owned by a fellow billionaire, Oman’s Mohammed Al Barwani.

As many as 18 guests can enjoy the yacht’s three outdoor decks, including one with two pools. The vessel, which has a crew of up to 36, also boasts a cinema, meeting spaces and lounges,  Luxuo reported .

Every detail is designed for luxury, even down to the masts’ technology.

Bezos opted for high-tech “in-boom furlers,” which store the vast canvases at the bottom of the mast, above the deck. Each weighs nearly 2,000 pounds, but they allow his deck to be kept clear of ropes.

Clearing ropes out of the way maximizes entertaining space, and allows for a hot tub forward of the mainmast.

The yacht is also built for speed. Its three masts provide “one of the largest sail areas ever seen in yachting,”  according to SuperYacht Times .

The Koru’s original designer, and the identity of its captain, remain secret. Boat International noted : “With the elegant curve of the bow and a bowsprit, the lines are certainly classic, but we still have no idea which designer drew them.”

The Cayman Islands-flagged vessel also has engine power like most sailing yachts.

And while other billionaires measure yachts by size, Bezos’ is only the 24th largest.

However, since Koru’s masts rule out a helicopter deck, the billionaire commissioned a support vessel, Abeona, named for the Roman goddess of outward journeys.

In addition to a helipad, the 246-foot Abeona features an extra two staterooms for four guests and as many as 45 crew and support staff.

It’s the largest custom-built support vessel ever manufactured by Damen Yachting. On board in Mallorca were at least four jetskis, two fast launches, and an additional dinghy. Its heavy winch is capable of lifting a small submarine, although Bezos is not believed to have one thus far.

The “classic exterior lines” of Koru, are reminiscent of another billionaire’s boat: Eos, a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller, 81, who may have inspired Bezos after hosting him on the vessel.

Favored by megastars like Katy Perry and Bradley Cooper — who were Diller’s guests during 2019’s Google Camp in Sicily — the German-built Eos can accommodate up to 16 guests and 21 crew.

It was the largest private sailing yacht in the world when it was completed in 2006. Diller, chairman of IAC and Expedia, who is worth $3.9 billion, bought it three years later. Intriguingly, its figurehead is modeled on Diller’s wife Diane von Fürstenberg, the fashion designer.

But the $200 million, 305-foot schooner is now dwarfed by Bezos’ boat.

As Koru sailed in the Balearic Sea this week off the coast of Spain, Bezos’ boat symbolically surges past several other tech billionaires’ vessels – including Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s $80 million, 240-foot Dragonfly, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison’s, $160 million, 288-foot Musashi.

It will cost Bezos, 59, an estimated $25 million per year to operate Koru, but the world’s third-richest man isn’t likely to need a loan with his $140.6 billion fortune,  according to Forbes .

Bezos’ use of sailpower sets him apart from most billionaires, but others are seeking a hi-tech zero-carbon power source: a Japanese billionaire has reportedly commissioned the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht.

Germany’s Lürssen Yachts announced in March that they had a hydrogen-powered superyacht in advanced construction.

It declined to identify the future owner of the unnamed superyacht, but specialist publication FuelCellsWorks reported Japanese billionaire tech Yusaku Maezawa, worth an estimated $1.7 billion, commissioned the innovative effort.

Dubbed Project Cosmos, the 374-foot superyacht is designed by Apple’s legendary Marc Newson and was first unveiled in early March at Lürssen’s facility in Rendsburg, Germany.

Once completed as soon as next year, the vessel is expected to utilize emission-free fuel cell technology to generate power lasting up to 15 days while anchored or to travel as far as 1,000 miles at slow speeds.

Three other major shipyards, including in Italy and the Netherlands, are likely to launch their own hydrogen started outfitting newly constructed vessels with hydrogen fuel cells as of March 2022, with the first models reportedly expected in 2024.

Other megayachts expected to soon join Bezos’ Koru in the water include two Lürssen models, the 475-foot Luminance and the 400-foot Jag, and Feadship 821, a 389-foot offering from the Netherlands manufacturer.

But even those won’t best the biggest megayacht in the world, the 593-foot Azzam, which launched in 2013 after being commissioned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates who died last year.

Azzam, which means determination in Arabic, reportedly cost more than $600 million and is nearly 60 feet longer than the world’s second-largest yacht, the 533-foot Eclipse, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Those monster vessels are expected to be surpassed next year by REV, a 600-foot yacht under construction in Norway which will have space for 36 guests and 54 crewmembers, according to Boat International .

Jeff Bezos’ $500M yacht has a 246-foot support ship, Lauren Sanchez figurehead

Jeff Bezos' yacht reportedly cost $500 million and is the largest sailing yacht in the world. Here's what we know.

  • Jeff Bezos ' new $500 million megayacht Koru set sail this summer.
  • At 417 feet long, it's the world's largest sailing yacht and even boasts a sculpture resembling his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.
  • Here's everything we know about Bezos' yacht.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos' new megayacht set sail this summer, with the founder and former Amazon CEO and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez crisscrossing Europe to show it off.

At 417 feet long, the vessel is the world's largest sailing yacht and cost an estimated $500 million. The yacht is named Koru , which means "loop" or "coil" in the Māori language and often signifies new beginnings.

Koru joins a large class of flashy billionaires' yachts , including the 305-foot-long Eos, which belongs to billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison owns a yacht called Musashi, which is 288 feet long.

Bezos commissioned the enormous boat from the Dutch custom yacht builder Oceanco, and it took years to construct.

In February, the yacht underwent its first sea trials, a series of tests usually conducted in the last phases of construction. Koru made its maiden voyage in April, traveling from the Netherlands to Gibraltar.

The vessel has a pool on deck, and the prow features a mermaid sculpture that bears a striking resemblance to Bezos' then-girlfriend Sanchez. A second "support yacht," which has an on-deck helipad, accompanies Koru on its travels.

Sanchez has said the sculpture affixed to Bezos' yacht isn't her. "I'm very flattered, but it's not," she told Vogue. The sculpture is apparently of the Norse goddess Freyja, one of Bezos' favorite figures from mythology.

Bezos and Sanchez were first seen aboard the yacht along the coast of Spain in May, shortly before news broke that the couple had gotten engaged. The couple spent the rest of the summer on board traveling to various destinations, stopping at the Cannes Film Festival, sailing down the Italian Riviera, and making their way to Croatia.

In August, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

While yacht season was apparently enjoyable for the couple, it was only after the vessel stirred up quite a bit of controversy: Koru's masts were so tall that the yacht nearly required the dismantling of a historic bridge in the Netherlands in order for it to pass through.

Locals planned to egg Bezos' superyacht if the bridge came down. Following the public outcry, Oceanco withdrew its request for the city to take apart the bridge.

And despite this massive purchase, Bezos' net worth is still well over $100 billion.

Bezos ran into some trouble earlier this year when it came out that the Koningshaven Bridge in the Netherlands might have to be dismantled to let Y721 Koru pass through, as the megayacht’s 229-foot masts exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance. City officials briefly agreed to disassemble the bridge but then decided against it in the face of public backlash, according to The New York Times. That negative reaction included a threat from residents to show up and pelt rotten eggs at the $500 million behemoth.

Oceanco, the company that built Y721 Koru, ultimately decided against applying for the permit that would be required for dismantling Koningshaven Bridge, and the boat was instead quietly towed to another shipyard without its mast.

The iconic historic De Hef - Koningshavenbrug Bridge in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam may be dismantled for Jeff Bezos superyacht to pass under, as the mast of the sailboat exceeds the height of the bridge. The two-tower with swing lift bridge is an old level steel railroad bridge connecting the island, Noordereiland in the Maas river in the Southern part of Rotterdam. The bridge was built in 1877 and suffered damage during the 1940 German bombings. Since 2017 after the renovation work, the municipality promised that the bridge would never be dismantled again. The superyacht for the multibillionaire chairman of Amazon is built in the Dutch shipyards of Oceanco. The city council said in a statement that if they will proceed the cost of the deconstruction will be covered by the shipbuilder. Bezos’s completed yacht will be accompanied by a 246-foot-long “shadow yacht” called YS7512, Damen Yacht’s largest-ever support vessel. It will fit 45 people onboard, feature a helicopter hangar and storage for Jet Skis and other water toys and is reportedly called Abeona , according to Boat International .

Y721-Jeff-Bezos

Oceanco's 127 metre sailing yacht known as Y721 , rumoured to be Jeff Bezos's in-build superyacht, emerged from the shed for the first time this week. BOAT rounds up the best pictures of the project, which will become the largest sailing yacht in the world when delivered in 2022.

Emerging from the shed

The sailing yacht was glimpsed for the very first time earlier this month after rolling out of the sheds at Oceanco's Zwijndrecht shipyard. The record-breaking black-hulled superyacht is set to feature three masts and a bowsprit.

The scale of the project can be seen in this image against the shipyard workers watching the yacht emerge. While the designers of the project remain a secret, it is known that the yacht is built from aluminium and steel.

Prior to being revealed in October, the hull of the yacht was built in pieces at Oceanco's Zwijnenburg facility before being assembled in Zwijndrecht.

The bow and superstructure of the sailing yacht are clearly seen in this image. While the sale of the yacht was first reported in 2018, no other details about the project have been released until now. The yacht will be the largest yacht ever built at Oceanco.

The striking black shine of the hull is seen from below in this image. A new book published this year appeared to confirm long-standing rumours that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the owner of this secretive 127-metre sailing yacht. An excerpt of the book, named Amazon Unbound , was published by Bloomberg and describes the superyacht as “one of the finest sailing yachts in existence,” with "several decks" and "three enormous masts."

The teak decks of the superyacht can be seen from above in this image. Amazon Unbound also reported that an accompanying support boat is also under construction, though the details of this remain unknown.

The masts are so tall that Dutch officials considered dismantling the 95-year-old Koningshaven Bridge to allow the vessel past the 131-foot span on its journey from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam through Rotterdam to the North Sea.

Abeona

Azzam, world's longest superyacht

Has the World Finally Had a Glimpse of Jeff Bezos’s $500 Million Mega-Yacht?

By Shivani Vora

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is appears to be getting closer to welcoming the superyacht he reportedly commissioned in 2018: a fancy toy fitting for the world’s second-richest person, given that it costs a reported $500 million and breaks one world record after another.

Called Y721, this vessel of all vessels is being custom designed by Dutch builder Oceanco and was spotted at a shipyard last week in Zwijndrecht, a town in the western Netherlands. It’s reportedly heading to another Netherlands town, Alblasserdam, for a final fitting. With a length of 417 feet, Y721 is the biggest sailing yacht in the world and the longest vessel to be built in the Netherlands. Features include a black hull, classic shape, three large decks, and three masts.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Boat Yacht Vessel and Watercraft

Superyacht Bravo Eugenia , belonging to the U.S. billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was built by Oceanco, which is also rumored to be behind Bezos’s new massive vessel.

Y721 is going to totally change the world of yachting with its design and innovation, says Fernando Nicholson, a luxury yacht sales broker with the yachting company Camper & Nicholsons. “It’s a boat with the latest technology and bells and whistles that have never been seen,” he says. “This will be the standard for all superyachts to follow, but in years to come, when its features become more affordable. Right now, only someone with Bezos’s wealth can swing the cost.”

The superyacht is said to be modeled after Oceanco’s famous yacht, the Black Pearl , which the company site says , “is one of the largest and most ecological sailing yachts in the world. She can cross the Atlantic without burning even a liter of fossil fuel.” Y721 will go through sea trails following its fitting-out in Alblasserdam and is expected to be ready sometime next year.

The Flying Fox , allegedly owned by Bezos.

However, it’s only one of two new boats for Bezos: He has also commissioned a shadow vessel called YS 7512 from builder Damen Yachts. This support ship measures 246 feet in length and accommodates 45 additional crew and guests. It will also feature a helipad and meeting space and have a vast amount of storage for Bezos’s endless number of water toys, with diving and snorkeling gear, jet and water skis, waterslides, and surfboards among the bunch. Shadow vessels are a growing phenomenon in the superyacht industry and one more extra toy that their owners want to have at the ready, says Nicholson. “You see them more and more now as an add-on to a superyacht purchase,” he says. “They’ve almost become a must.”

There’s no doubt that Bezos will be sailing the high seas in full panache and style come 2022. But really, is there any other way when you have more money than almost anyone else in the world and attract an endless amount of attention too?

Black Pearl

Jeff Bezos' Superyacht 'Koru' Arrives in U.S.

Koru superyacht

The superyacht Koru , a gargantuan technological and nautical achievement courtesy of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos , has sailed into the U.S.

The epic sailing yacht is 417-feet long (127 m) and features three carbon fiber masts that are a staggering 230 feet (70 m) high.

The ship has been under intense scrutiny since its inception, both because of its famous owner, but also because of its size and engineering capability. Koru is so large, in fact, that its builder Oceanco had to sneak the ship out of Rotterdam at night, without its masts attached, in order to both avoid media attention and fit it under the famous Koningshaven Bridge. The bridge, an invaluable WWII landmark known as 'De Hef,' was set to be dismantled to allow Koru to pass through (with its masts attached) before a public outcry derailed the original plans.

After Bezos finally took delivery of the $500 million megayacht in April, it has remained hidden in the Mediterranean. It was last spotted a few weeks ago off the coast of Gibraltar before seemingly making its way across the Atlantic. On Tuesday, Koru arrived at port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, marking the first time the boat has been stateside and the first time the public has seen her up close.

Due to her size, the boat is being kept alongside cruise ships and tankers at the commercial sea port rather than among the private superyachts that typically dot the Florida coastline. For the time being, it's resting alongside the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship -- one of the few vessels that can make Koru look small with its own 1112-foot length.

Not only does Koru carry a massive 417-foot hull length, it also has a whopping 56-foot (17 m) beam and a 14-foot (4.2 m) draught, making it extremely unlikely to ever access a non-commercial sea port.

The other shocking detail surrounding Koru is the magnitude of her 'support vessel,' the Abeona . Both vessels travel together, with the Abeona serving as the complementary vessel for crew accommodations and for transporting Bezos' various water toys. Abeona is 246-feet (75 m) long and is currently docked a few miles away in nearby Dania Beach.

Bezos and his fiancé Lauren Sanchez have been spotted cruising the Mediterranean in recent months, although understandably they've been trying to avoid detection by switching off the AIS tracker on Koru . With no AIS signal, the vessel can avoid having its GPS coordinates broadcast publicly.

Residents of Florida may start seeing Koru more often as Bezos recently confirmed he's purchased property in the Miami area near his parents. Bezos' space company Blue Origin also recently opened a launch facility at Cape Canaveral and a rocket assembly facility in Brevard County -- both in central Florida on the eastern coast.

“They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger,” Bezos recently said on Instagram. “I want to be close to my parents.”

As for Koru , it appears she's all set for retirement life with Bezos and family in sunny Florida. With Abeona following closely behind, there will be no shortage of amenities to pass the time.

You can see Koru arriving at port in the video below:

You now need a net worth of $5.8 million to be among the richest 1% of Americans, report finds

jeff bezos sailboat yacht

With daily headlines about buying yachts, attempting space travel, and dodging taxes , billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk have become synonymous with wealth—and wealth creation. But it takes far, far less to be counted among the richest of the rich in the U.S. In fact, a few million will do.

That’s according to the 18th edition of the Wealth Report from Douglas Elliman and real estate agency and consultancy group Knight Frank, which looks at wealth distribution around the globe and offers advice to high-net-worth (HNW) and ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals, defined by the report as those with at least $1 million and $30 million, respectively.

To break into the hallowed 1%, an American needs $5.8 million, up from last year’s $5.1 million (inflation comes for us all). That places the U.S. fourth globally in terms of assets needed to break ahead of 99% of the population. It’s worth noting that other estimates put the average wealth of the 1% much higher , though it’s calculated differently.

The toughest country to join the ranks of the richest? Monaco, where it takes $12.9 million, or more than double what’s required in America. Luxembourg and Switzerland also outpace the U.S., with $10.83 million and $8.5 million needed, respectively, to crack the top 1%.

Each year, Knight Frank's report looks at where the world's richest live and how they spend and invest their money. It also provides insight from hundreds of wealth advisors and bankers on investment opportunities and challenges.

'The richest generation in history'

Last year, rising interest rates and other geopolitical factors led to the total wealth held by the richest households falling by 10%, Knight Frank found. That led to the number of global UHNW individuals shrinking by 4%.

But things are looking up this year for the 1% of the 1%. Portfolios have recovered, and the number of UHNW individuals globally rose 4.2%, to 626,619. The Middle East and the U.S. saw the biggest gains, primarily driven by the strong U.S. economy and recovering equity markets, the report notes.

And 2022 was something of an anomaly, as far as wealth trends are concerned: The decline came after a record year in 2021, when the population of the ultrawealthy grew by more than 9%, according to Knight Frank.

As they amass ever more money, the face of the world's wealthiest is also on the precipice of major change: The coming Great Wealth Transfer will see some $90 trillion in assets change hands over the next two decades in the U.S. alone, meaning affluent millennials will become "the richest generation in history."

Younger individuals, and more women, counting themselves among the wealthiest may create a "seismic shift" in how wealth is used. For example, far more younger affluents are worried about climate change, and view their wealth as a tool for change.

"Gen Z in particular are looking for ways to invest in alignment with their values," Mike Pickett, director of U.K. wealth management firm Cazenove Capital , says in the report. "It’s not just about financial returns, it’s about building cultural capital."

Trump Is the Leading Man

A man walks along a street wearing a sock featuring a depiction of Donald Trump and Trump shoes.

By Gail Collins and Bret Stephens

Ms. Collins and Mr. Stephens are Opinion columnists. They converse every week.

Gail Collins: So, Bret — are you gonna miss Mitch McConnell?

Bret Stephens: I guess it all depends on who succeeds him. If it’s a fairly traditional Republican, like John Cornyn of Texas or John Thune of South Dakota, I don’t think it will make much of a difference. But if it’s someone like Florida’s Rick Scott or worse, then we’ll probably remember McConnell’s tenure much more fondly, like Russians who thought better of Czar Nicholas II once they had a taste of the next guys.

How about you?

Gail: Until the Trump era I always had a deeply negative attitude toward McConnell — he was, after all, the guy who sat on Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nomination to make sure Merrick Garland never got to come up for a vote. But lately, McConnell has certainly seemed more civilized than a lot of the other Republican leaders.

Bret: A low bar. One irony is that if McConnell had had the courage of his convictions in Trump’s second impeachment and had moved his caucus to convict, Trump would probably have been barred from holding office again and McConnell might now be holding on to his.

Gail: OK, wow. Changing my tune.

Bret: A first — Bret is harder on Mitch than Gail is.

Gail: Still, it’s smart of a longtime leader who’s moved into his 80s to step aside and let the younger generation take the top spot — while of course continuing to work hard at less glamorous projects that still make a difference.

Think of it as the Nancy Pelosi school of thought — and really wishing Joe Biden would sign up for class.

Bret: On that subject, I need to fulminate. You no doubt saw the New York Times/Siena College poll this weekend. Donald Trump leads Biden nationally by a five-point margin, 48 percent to 43 percent, and 47 percent of voters “strongly disapprove” of Biden’s leadership. Another 73 percent think Biden is “too old to be an effective president,” as compared with 42 percent who feel that way about Trump. Other polls have had Trump consistently ahead in nearly all the swing states, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls : 6.5 percent in Georgia; 7.7 percent in Nevada; 1 percent in Wisconsin; 3.6 percent in Michigan; 5.5 percent in Arizona; 5.7 percent in North Carolina. The only exception is Pennsylvania, where Biden’s lead is a measly 0.8 percent.

This is entirely on Biden. He hubristically insisted on running for re-election on the theory that only he could beat Trump, despite his obvious physical limitations and deepening unpopularity. Every time someone suggested he should stick to his original promise to be a one-term president — as I did back in, oh, 2021 — his aides and media enablers attacked the messenger. Now he has us facing the prospect of a Trumpocalypse because Biden somehow thinks he can’t possibly lose to “the former guy.”

But he can lose, and on his current course he will. He’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg all over again but worse, because the stakes are so much higher and he’s no R.B.G. in the first place.

Gail: Fulminate away. You know, when we started conversing in 2017 I presumed we’d spend most of our time arguing left versus right, but this past year we’ve both been wrapped up in the horror of Donald Trump and the stupidity of a Biden re-election campaign.

The Biden story is sad for me because I think he’s done a good job as president, and he’s in danger of trashing his legacy by running again when there are so many good potential Democratic candidates out there.

Bret: One of life’s ironies is that the personal qualities that often get people to where they are turn out to be their undoing once they get there. To make it to the presidency takes a titanic amount of self-assurance and ambition, but what Biden needs to secure his historical legacy is an ocean of self-effacement and humility.

And speaking of humility, can we turn to Trump? The Supreme Court just agreed to hear his appeal on his immunity claims. What does this mean for the campaign?

Gail: Gee, I guess that’s up to the justices. Can’t imagine this court — which I find too conservative but not crazy — is going to issue a ruling that says a president can break any law in the land as an “official act” without consequence. I mean, you do eventually get down to the vision of him dispatching a team of federal assassins ….

Bret: Putting aside the political stakes, it’s an intriguing case. The court ruled in 1982 in Nixon v. Fitzgerald that a president was totally immune from civil suits “predicated on his official acts.” Criminal cases, like the one that Jack Smith, the special counsel, has brought for Trump’s election interference, are obviously different: If a president, say, murdered his chef, he wouldn’t be immune because that behavior wouldn’t be an “official act.” But were Trump’s efforts to overturn the election an “official act”? Disgraceful, impeachable and unconstitutional for sure — but weren’t they also performed in his capacity as president?

That matters not only for Trump’s sake, but also for Biden’s and other future presidents. Because rest assured, if Trump wins the election, he’ll immediately bend the Justice Department to try to criminally prosecute Biden on some specious grounds for his own official acts.

Or am I totally wrong, and should we put this sucker on trial already?

Gail: Have to admit if Biden wins I’d be secretly OK with dropping prosecution of Trump for trying to overturn the election, given that there are so many other cases pending against him. But some of them, like the whole Georgia situation, have gotten so complicated. I’d be happy to see the country discussing the more easily relatable cases — like all those national documents stuffed in the bathroom at Mar-a-Lago and E. Jean Carroll’s recent $83.3 million award for defamation — which began, as I’m sure you remember, with what the court determined was sexual abuse in a department store dressing room.

Bret: I’ve always thought that Trump’s obstruction of a subpoena in the documents case is the strongest of the indictments against him. Unfortunately, a Florida courtroom is not an ideal jurisdiction for getting a guilty verdict, and it doesn’t look like the case will be tried anytime soon.

Gail: More than the idea of seeing Trump marched off to jail, I love the idea of a bankrupt Trump spending his 80s doing podcasts from a motel room in Tampa or Bridgeport. But when it comes to punishment, no bad deed is more important than trying to subvert the democratic process in such a big-time manner.

Bret: It’s horrible. But not quite as horrible as the idea that tens of millions of Americans are willing to vote him right back into office. Serious question: Why?

Gail: So much has happened … but I still suspect a lot of this is just about Trump’s history as a reality TV personality. There’s a large chunk of the country, particularly in rural areas, that feels cut off from the upwardly mobile side of the world. Trump is diverting, and no matter what his alleged wealth, he’s a guy who’s always been fun to watch who doesn’t talk down to them.

Bret: Very true.

Gail: I know that’s not deep. But hey, you’re in charge of understanding Republicans. What’s the bottom line?

Bret: He’s a raised middle finger at all the people whom his supporters see as a self-satisfied, self-dealing cultural elite. The more that elite despises him, the more they love him.

That’s why any good analysis of the Trump phenomenon has to begin with an analysis of the Us phenomenon, if you will: Where did those of us who were supposed to represent the sensible center of the country go so wrong that people were willing to turn to a charlatan like Trump in the first place? I have endless theories, but here’s another one: We tried to change the way people are instead of meeting them where they are. Neocons (like me) tried to bend distant cultures in places like Afghanistan to accept certain Western values. Didn’t work. Progressives tried to push Americans to accept new values on issues like identity, equity, pronouns and so on. That isn’t working, either.

Trump represents a complete rejection of all that. For every American he scandalizes, another one feels seen, heard, reflected and understood by him.

Gail: It’s true that the Trump folk find progressives irritating, but we’re going to have to discuss how you avoid making people feel like they’re being lectured to while simultaneously standing up for critical principles like gay rights.

In the meantime, we march forward. Sigh.

Bret: Gail, this is so depressing. Let’s switch gears. Did you get a chance to read Joseph Goldstein’s gorgeous story about the 93-year-old Ruth Gottesman in The Times last week ? It will make your heart sing.

Gail: I did, and it did. Of course, most of us aren’t like Gottesman in being the heir to a mega-fortune that would allow us to donate a billion dollars to anything. But her decision to use it to eliminate tuition at a Bronx medical school was so smart and so sweeping. The videos of the thrilled students jumping up and down when they heard the news were wonderful.

Bret: In Hebrew, the word for charity, tzedakah, is also the word for righteousness. Tzedakah is not simply about giving money away. It’s also the obligation to help others learn to help themselves. Harder to think of a better illustration of it than to ease the way for the next generation of doctors.

Gail: Next week, let’s figure out how to do that for medical students everywhere ….

Bret: Sure thing. And it sure beats spending the money on $500 million yachts. Jeff Bezos, we’re looking at you.
