A French Polynesia yacht charter vacation offers a mesmerizing selection of things to see and do. Here is our small selection of some of the most outstanding:

Don't Miss:

  • The Pā'ōfa'i Gardens, Papeete, Tahiti : within easy walking distance of the port of Papeete, the Pā'ōfa'i Gardens stretch for around 4.5 hectares along the waterfront and host more than 400 trees and plants from all around the five archipelagos of French Polynesia.

Tiki Takaii, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands:  the ancient archaeological site of Mea'e Te l'Ipona is situated high above the Puama’u village, in the mountains of Hiva Oa and is home of the largest "tikis" (ancient, human-like religious stone sculptures) in French Polynesia.

Motu Tapu Lagoon, Bora Bora:  once the private beach of the Queen of Tahiti in 1827, Motu Tapu lagoon is crystal clear and turns a vivid blue as the water gets deeper. Surrounded by stunning views, this bay creates a vision of an idyllic desert island escape.

Marae Taputapuatea, Raiatea: a newly-listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, this famous temple is one of the most renowned temples in French Polynesia. With hundreds of ancient temples spread across these islands, some of them still buried in the jungle, there are many for you to explore.

Mount Aorai, Tahiti:  Aorai is the second highest peak in French Polynesia, after Orohena. Generating phenomenal views throughout the hike, this 9.5-mile walk is one to remember.

Tiputa Pass, Rangiroa: t he most famous dive site in French Polynesia. This is a dive you can repeatedly perform, day after day, and still, be astonished by what you may see each time. From great hammerhead sharks to manta rays and turtles, there is a huge variety of wild and wonderful marine life found here.

French Polynesia's vast scattering of islands means there is something to suit everyone; from adventure and wildlife enthusiasts to beachgoers and sun worshippers. The region is also ideal for diving enthusiasts, notably in the Society Islands and the Tuamotus islands, which provide some of the most memorable diving sites across the globe.

Particularly idyllic and charming, it is no surprise French Polynesia is also a top destination when it comes to weddings and honeymoons. The islands are like paradise on earth and provide the perfect backdrop to any romantic event.

French Polynesia has an incredibly rich culture and historic background which can be seen and felt as soon as you visit the region. The first people to observe Tahiti and French Polynesia’s other isolated islands migrated from Southeast Asia roughly 4,000 years ago. Today, many residents are descendants of the brave sailors who navigated their way here on wooden canoes stitched with natural fibers.

Tahitians have a mindset that revolves around a philosophy known as  aita pea pea , or ‘ not to worry .’ Many Tahitian traditions and oral legends date back to their Maohi ancestors, including the bamboo huts built with pandanus roofs they still live in and the colorful pareus they still wear.

As well as its beautiful islands and swathes of beaches, French Polynesia is also renowned for its artistry which includes weaving, woodcarving and tattooing. Each sacred tradition tells a colorful story about Tahitian life, love, and their enduring relationship with nature.

Music and dance are also a huge part of their culture and each performance displays passion and vitality which was once linked to all aspects of island life.

If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht, a sailing yacht or a luxury catamaran for your South Pacific getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in French Polynesia

Motor yacht charters  are a fantastic way to explore all that French Polynesia has to offer, and with the extra power that you get from the high-throttled engines, you can cover much greater distances in a shorter amount of time, allowing you to get the maximum out of your private super yacht charter.

From large superyachts to sleek smaller models, and everything in between, there is sure to be something to suit your needs.

Sailing Yacht Charters in French Polynesia

Snorkeling in shallow tropical water off the catamaran

If it’s a more tranquil and peaceful experience you’re looking for, then perhaps a  sailing yacht  might be the best fit; allowing you to relax and rejuvenate whilst soaking in the impeccable views. The dry season between May and October is the optimum time for cruising across this gleaming archipelago. While there is no shortage of clear skies and warm sunshine throughout the year; there are more events and festivals, less humidity, and greater availability of cruise dates during these times.

Catamarans  are also a prevalent choice in French Polynesia, offering more excellent stability, ample space and larger cabins, as well as being perfect for navigating the shallow waters and the famous picturesque lagoons that are found here.

There is a limited amount of vessels that are readily available in this region so if you are keen on renting a luxury yacht around these waters, we highly recommend you speak with a yacht charter broker who can advise you on which yachts will be available and when.

For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in French Polynesia below;

  • For private motor yacht rentals in French Polynesia, prices can range from $45,000 to $826,483 per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in French Polynesia, prices alter from $56,000 to $254,136 weekly, plus expenses

Taxes and service fees are set at 5% of the gross charter rate, to be collected before each charter.

French Polynesia is a year-round cruising destination with temperatures ranging between 28 - 31 degrees. Although the most popular times to embark on a private superyacht vacation are usually during the peak summer months, there are many different elements to take into consideration before you go.

Tahiti and French Polynesia only have two seasons the wet season and the dry season. Between May and September is the most favorable for yacht charters as it is generally drier and the winds tend to be more predictable.

The best conditions for sailing can be found in the Iles sous le Vent (Leeward Islands) region which is home to prevailing winds coming from the east at a speed of between 15-20 knots and up to 25 knots.

Between November and April is the wet season with an average high temperature of 35 degrees and an average low of 29 degrees.

Most yacht charters begin in Tahiti, French Polynesia's largest island. Papeete , a port city on Tahiti, is the capital of French Polynesia and is a great starting point for those wanting to explore the surrounding islands.

Guests can embark on their superyacht at one of Tahiti's main Pacific hubs, Marina Taina or Papeete Port . Papeete is a city bustling with life, you will find that you are within walking distance of excellent dining and shopping facilities.

One of the largest urban centers in the South Pacific, Papatee itself is a gracious and elegant tropical city with tall palm trees and an abundance of flowers hugging the city. From here you can cruise to the nearby Mo'orea , Raiatea and the additional Society Islands .

Others may prefer to start their charter in the region of Raiatea on Thaiti island which is where another popular marina is located. You can fly to the international airport in Papeete and then catch a connecting flight to Raiatea (Uturoa Airport) with Air Tahiti.

Raiatea is the ideal location to begin your yacht charter venture thanks to its close proximity to Tahiti's sister island, Mo'orea. Only 17km away, this island explodes majestically out of the crystal clear ocean into vertical peaks and is surrounded by a wide, shallow lagoon. Home to two beautiful bays, Opunohu and Cook bay, you'll find that you will feel instantly relaxed and rejuvenated within the first 24 hours of your yacht charter experience. From here, head to Huahine , Taha'a and Bora Bora for more idyllic cruising.

Tipping is not expected or standard practice in the country.  That said, you can certainly tip for good service and in those situations, 10% is the unspoken benchmark.

French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France, and French is the official language. However, Tahitian is widely spoken, particularly in the outer islands, as well as in other dialects. Not many people speak English outside of tourist establishments.

Avoid daytrippers around popular hotspots by arriving either first thing in the morning or late afternoon when they all head back to their resorts.

a couple chatting with an agent booking a vacation

For yacht charters in French Polynesia, we strongly advise booking well in advance of your trip to ensure you get the perfect vessel for your chosen dates. We recommend booking at least 3 months ahead to give your broker the time to organize the ultimate charter experience.

If left too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced. It is also useful to book early in order to secure a date when everyone in your charter party is available as the longer you leave it, the more challenging this will be.

Your  yacht charter broker  will also need plenty of time to craft a personalized itinerary and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in the marinas.  Advance booking will allow your broker the optimum time to organize everything down to the last detail to ensure your yacht charter runs seamlessly.

Yacht Charter in French Polynesia

Knight by Heesen - Top rates for a Charter of a private Superyacht in French Polynesia

French Polynesia yacht charter

French Polynesia is situated in the heart of the South Pacific and comprises 5 archipelagos over a vast area of water. With luxury villas, world-class resorts, and the most beautiful crystal clear, glass waters you've ever seen, it's no surprise that yacht charters are some of the most sought-after activities in this region. With most of the islands being hundreds of miles away from each other, there really isn't any other way to truly immerse yourself in the wonders of this Pacific group of islands than by chartering a private yacht.

Why charter a yacht in French Polynesia?

The South Pacific is a remote destination in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, and its remoteness is one of its charms. The French Polynesian group of archipelagos is one of the most beautiful places on earth, with 118 islands located in a span of 2 million square miles. To get the best of this tropical paradise, there's only one way to visit the best ones in styles, and that's onboard a luxury yacht.

Marinas are found in most of the destinations, such as Bora Bora, Tahiti, and Moorea, but on islands where luxury resorts are nowhere to be found, safe anchorages on bays and safe harbours offer protected refuge for yacht charters that cruise the Pacific. All kinds and sizes of yachts can be chartered from sailboats to catamarans, to superyachts, to monohulls, you won't have a problem finding the perfect boat for you and your family or friends.

What are yacht charter prices in French Polynesia?

With yacht charters one of the top ways to explore French Polynesia, you'll find a great variety of yacht charter options to choose from. Prices vary on a number of factors such as the size of the yacht, the type of yacht you want to charter, the rental duration, the destinations, as well as the number of people on board.

A 111-foot sailboat for 7 adults can cost around $70,000 for a week, while a 138-foot catamaran for 8 people can cost $128,000 per week. For a 145-foot catamaran that can accommodate a group of 12 adults, it can cost about $260,000 per week, while a 197-foot superyacht for 12 adults can cost about $375,000 for a full week of cruising around the islands.

When is the yachting season in French Polynesia?

All-year-round trade winds and mild climate make the group of Islands a fantastic superyacht charter destination. With a tropical climate, French Polynesia experiences two seasons: the dry and the wet seasons. The dry season is the best time of the year for yacht charters and cruises, with sunshine and blue skies every day during the months of May to October. Tahiti is one of the most popular islands in French Polynesia, and if you've chosen to stay at a luxury villa or 5-star resort on the island, then you'd want to explore more of what the archipelago has to offer. If you only have 2 days to hit the waters, then an overnight yacht charter to Moorea island is a definite must.

Travel time to Moorea from Tahiti can take around 30 to 40 minutes, which means you can start early in the morning to arrive in Moorea just before noon. Indulge yourself in fresh seafood grilled in one of the beach cafes before you explore the wonders of the island. ATVs through the lush forests, a scooter ride to navigate the island, horseback riding, outdoor adventures, and authentic local culture are waiting for you to explore.

You can then head back to your yacht where it is moored on a bay, and you get to sleep under the stars on the deck or in the comforts of your luxury cabin. In the morning, have breakfast on the boat, and explore Moorea one last time, before hopping back and heading your way back to Tahiti, just as the sun sets on the vast Pacific Ocean.

French Polynesia yacht charter for a week

With over 100 islands, there's simply so much to explore in French Polynesia that week-long yacht charters are the norm. You can choose from which island you want to jumpstart your expedition, but Tahiti is the most popular of all since the capital of Papeete is found here, as well as its lone international airport. A week-long French Polynesia yacht charter itinerary can include the following:

Day 1: Tahiti

Cruise along the coast of Tahiti and explore the beautiful beaches and coves found within the island. Moor on a secluded bay, dive into the waters and discover ancient shipwrecks and coral reefs, and spend the night on the bay.

Day 2: Moorea

Come morning, enjoy breakfast on deck before making your way to Moorea, which is found 12 km from Tahiti, and reachable within 30 to 40 minutes. Disembark and enjoy an entire day of exploration and adventure on the island. Get back on the boat at the end of the day, where you will stay the night and prepare for the next morning.

Day 3: Huahine

Dubbed as the "Garden Island," Huahine offers lush jungles and smooth white sand beaches. A sand bar appears when the tide is out, and you can kayak down its secluded lagoons and streams.

Day 4: Raiatea

Dubbed as "Faraway Heaven," Raiatea features beautiful mountains with religious temples and sacred statues buried in its foothills. A pearl farm is also found on the island, as well as a tranquil lagoon that conceals an expansive coral garden located just off the shore.

Day 5: Taha'a

Home of vanilla plantations, you can smell the aroma of sweet vanilla on any given day. Vanilla Island, as it's also called, features a translucent lagoon and powder-sand beaches.

Day 6: Bora Bora

Considered to be the crown jewel of French Polynesia, it is home to ivory beaches, a large barrier reef, a famous lagoon, glassy turquoise waters, and beautiful overwater luxury villas. An airport is located in Motu Mute, which serves Bora Bora, offering one-hour flights back to Tahiti, or you can cruise back to Tahiti, which takes about 12 hours cruising time.

To truly enjoy French Polynesia, staying on one island or two won't be enough. To truly understand how beautiful this region is, a week-long yacht charter exploring the spectacular scenery and natural wonders this region has to offer is the most paradisiac experience to behold.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in French Polynesia

With Yachting.Rent, you can sail the azure waters of French Polynesia in a style that suits your adventure. Whether you prefer the traditional feel and thrill of a sailing boat or the spacious comfort of a catamaran, we offer a range of options to ensure an unforgettable voyage.

A sailing boat is a traditional choice that gives an authentic feel of the sea. It allows for a closer connection with the water, which is a perfect fit for those who love the thrill of cruising under sail. As they cut through the waves, sailing boats offer a distinct experience that captures the romantic essence of seafaring. The monohulls are usually quicker and can venture into more challenging waters, making them ideal for sailors looking to experience the exciting sail between French Polynesia’s islands and atolls.

On the other hand, a catamaran offers a different kind of experience. The twin-hulled vessels are known for their stability and space. With ample deck and interior areas, they provide a comfortable setting for families or larger groups. Their shallow drafts allow for closer access to beaches, giving you the freedom to explore the hidden coves and lagoons of French Polynesia. Catamarans are also great for those who enjoy snorkeling and diving, as they typically come equipped with broad swim platforms for easy water access.

In terms of climate and sailing conditions, both sailing boats and catamarans are well-suited to the French Polynesian environment. The gentle, consistent winds and calm waters make for enjoyable sailing experiences, regardless of the type of yacht you choose.

Yachting.Rent offers a fleet of modern, well-maintained sailing boats and catamarans, all equipped with essential amenities to ensure your sailing trip is comfortable and enjoyable. Our expert team is always available to help you choose the vessel that best suits your needs and sailing preferences.

Yacht Charter Holiday in French Polynesia

Come and explore the breathtaking French Polynesia - an overseas paradise that's sure to leave you spellbound! This country is made up of a number of groups of Polynesian islands with Tahiti being the most famous of all. With its Polynesian island groups and renowned Tahiti, there's no better place to begin your seafaring adventure.

French Polynesia has over 100 sub-tropical islands in five archipelagos which are scattered across the South Pacific on a size equal to Europe. The well known ones include the Society Islands like Tahiti which has two thirds of Polynesia’s inhabitants, beautiful Moorea and idyllic Bora Bora.

A sailing holiday in French Polynesia will take you through swaying coconut palms, coral atolls, powder white sands, ancient temples, fire walkers and cool pina coladas; here are several sheltered anchorages within the turquoise lagoons.

Charter a catamaran or a Sailing boat and sail to the neighboring Huahine, Taha’a, Bora Bora, and Maupiti along the French Polynesia coastline.

The navigation inside the lagoon is very specific: easy in the marked channels, very difficult and dangerous outside of the channels. Sailing to the Tuamutu, Mopelia, Maupiti or other islands is possible but restricted to specific conditions. If you intend to sail these islands, please contact the base or your agent in advance. Mopelia has no cell phone network coverage at all and the converage in the Tuamutu is very limited. Because of the distances, navigation difficulties, the lack of nautical info, charts details and no, or poor technical assistance you'll need get permission to sail there. The access to Maupiti you need to keep in mind: Refill your water tanks at the Bora Bora YC before sailing there as there is no water!

Provisioning in Polynesia is a bit expensive and self-provisioning can be a waste of your precious charter time. We recommend that you pre-order your provisioning and we will take care of shopping and have it stowed onboard the yacht on the day of your arrival. Forget tomatoes, yogurts and cheeses: If you expect the same food as home, you will be very disappointed. Do not look for tomatoes or dairy as they do not grow in Polynesia. No milk production so tomatoes, yogurts, cheeses are not part of the culinary Polynesian culture and expensive. On an other side the fishes, papayas, mangos and bananas are abundant and really part of the local culture.

Beverages: Alcohol, wines, beer, soda available at the base at much better prices than in the town stores. Vegetables: try to fit your meals with the local products. Potatoes do not grow on the islands, but excellent papayas! and local root vegetables.

Sea food: Buy your fish, crabs and lobsters direct from the fishermen when possible. Wave to the fishermen when you see some at sea, they will be happy to sell you their day catch.

Tips and gratuity is not common in the country but welcome in the hotels, big restaurants and on the crewed yachts. Do not offer alcohol to the locals or to the crews. You can offer clothes, books or tips rather than alcohol. Tipping the charter crew is the same as everywhere in the world: just welcome.
