Founded in 2014, Southport Yacht Club (SYC) is focused on boating! Our goal is to spend time off the dock and on the water in the North Carolina Cape Fear Region.  Our club is a great place to learn about the regional waters, acquire additional boating skills, develop friendships, and feel part of a community.  The club is 100% percent volunteer based and our members organize sailboat races/regattas, cruises, educational seminars, and super fun events throughout the year.

Our goal for this website is to provide you a snapshot of everything SYC has to offer.  For our members this site has a Member’s Only section where you can learn about upcoming events and shop our  “Ship’s Store”.   If you are a prospective member or just interested in the club, we hope you spend time on our website to see what we are all about!

Southport Yacht Club, established in 1946, is the Gold Coast’s award-winning premier sports club. Our Main Beach Clubhouse is home to the only open-air waterfront north-facing restaurant & bar. Overlooking our stunning 300-berth Marina on the Gold Coast’s waters, this location is a perfect venue for your next conference, function or waterfront wedding.

The Hollywell Clubhouse is home to our SYC sailing squadron, along with a Bar & Bistro. It’s the ideal place to grab a cold drink and watch one of our many off-the-beach Sailing events. Our well cared for campgrounds are the ideal place for you to moor and relax with family and friends. Just back from a few days on the Gold Coast and after having driven past the SYC numerous times we decided to book for dinner and we were certainly not disappointed. The setting is overlooking the harbour and with the open veranda type setting it... was a nice spot. Wife had steak and I had the swordfish and both were perfectly cooked especially the steak which is not as common as it could. Service is mostly ok with the young team members all seemingly keep to learn from a few experienced colleagues. SYC is not a high class establishment but if you are looking for pleasant meal is nice surrounds you won’t go wrong. More

Service was great- the 3 stars is for the service. Food was ok, but getting a bit pricey for what is essentially upscale pub food. What ruined the night for us was the very loud birthday function next to the restaurant. You cannot run a... function like that and pretend that the restaurant is not going to be affected. It is one or the other and it is greedy to do both. There are many other places that charge the same $$$ without the noise, which is a pity because the views are wonderful. More

Had lunch there with a friend last Sunday whilst I was on the GC...atmosphere is wonderful food was very disappointing and expensive..staff were friendly. ..what ever you do don't have the seafood platter it was $100 and nothing like the platters I have had elsewhere... . cold seafood was soggy and not fresh and cooked seafood tasted like it was cooked in old oil..drinks were good. Love the location, water views and the service very friendly. Unfortunately the food was very disappointing ! Lamb salad with pumpkin and Persian feta. It consisted of 4 pieces of left over dry roast lamb, possibly from the day before, 6 small cubes of pumpkin... and 1/2 teaspoon of crumbled feta, mixed lettuce with no dressing. The chef should be embarrassed serving this to customers. Although I’m guessing the person serving these dishes it a cook not a Chef. My husband had the fish and was also not happy. Will be back for drinks & for the views but not the food. We were advised by friends not to go because the food was not up to restaurant standards, we should have listened to them. More

Each year a group of friends gather for a reunion at the Yacht Club. This is the Firth year we have gathered for this event. Unfortunately due to our troubled times our numbers this year were reduced. Each year we have been hesitant in returning... because our experience has been so bad. This year was a repeat of the past, a grossly overpriced menu, expensive beverages and subservient attitude of the “Maître de”. Since we were last there, the place has been redecorated with nice plastic furniture. Unfortunately the attitude of the Maître de hasn’t change with his abrupt and unfriendly attitude. Because of the ridiculous high prices for a club we opted for the daily special (Tuesday) Schnitzel Parmigiana (same special as last year) $15.00 and Seafood Chowder $18.00. The Schnitzel was overfried, fat laden refried chips and a packet salad. To be totally honest the Chowder looked like vomit with corn kernels, frozen prawns and dehydrated mussels in a non descript sauce. The hi light being three slices of Turkish bread. Our friends seemed relatively happy with their meals however were quite distressed at the ridiculous prices of desserts. We’ll definitely going to our local pub next year. So looking forward to service with a smile rather than the scowl of the Maître de!! More

A group of us went to the Southport yacht club for New Years Eve 2019. We found it to be good value, well organised with friendly, helpful staff who worked hard to make sure everyone had a good night. The seafood buffet was lovely, plenty... of food, quickly replenished, fresh and tasty. Dessert was lovely, and drinks were reasonably priced. It was a lovely evening sitting outside on the water and we had great views of the fireworks going off around the Gold Coast. The band playing ABBA and Bee Gees was good, although the small dance floor soon got packed. Thank you all for a memorable evening More

With a warm welcome all I needed was to show my drivers licence to enter this beautifully appointed and positioned club. With a view of countless millions of dollars worth of water craft the club's atmosphere is delightful to say the least. We had lunch... there on Sunday and the meal was absolutely sumptuous! The lamb rump consisted of five half inch thick slices on a bed of chats and baby truss tomatoes... wonderfull! And the pork cutlet was huge and accompanied by chats, pumpkin puree and roast apple... spectacular. All this teamed up with the delightful attention of Robert, our server, who went out of his way to make us feel welcome, special and important. This is an elegant, stylish venue that I recommend to anyone finding themselves in the area. More

Beautiful view but worst experience of canapés we have ever had. Canapés are supposed to be delicious snacks with oysters or salmon or some such delicacy but we were served with dry croquettes filled with plain cooked macaroni not even moistened by cheese sauce and... a shallow bread case containing two small slices of red capsicum which was topped with an equally small slice of dry corned beef. We felt very sorry for our hosts who paid good money to have this disgustingly unpalatable food served. More

First time - service good and friendly staff - food very good Seafood chowder for entree will fill you up and the oysters fresh and plump. The linguine and pork chop for mains very good. Definitely going back

While it is a Club, one would expect more than very basic meals. Why do chefs insist on leaving prawn tails on when serving them tossed in a pasta dish and not providing a plate or bowl for the tails? Vegetarian is more than a... can of chic peas emptied into a curry sauce. And canned pineapple with two ultra thin slivers of strawberry just don't make the cut next to a pannacotta. More

Was recommended to us. Very disappointing! Sat on deck area which turned out to be so noisy you couldn't hear the person next to you. Also had a wedding reception going on behind us so amp up the noise factor x 3. The food was... very average, 1 meal out of 6 was passable. Forget it if you have any dietary requirements, nothing on the menu for vegetarians or gluten free. More

Service is always good but the food gets worse as time goes on. This place went from great Restaurant quality food at a great price to Pub/Club quality food well overpriced. A example of poor management with no skills in this field. Shame to see... such a great location go to waste. More

We had dinner here last night and we’re so impressed with your lovely staff. Everyone we dealt with were happy and friendly. Our meals, two steak sandwiches, a lamb rump and a chicken with risotto were all perfect and served piping hot. We would recommend... to all! More

Lovely location overlooking the Marina and pleasant waitstaff but forget the food. Take your own.The grilled Barramundi was tasteless and soft,looked boiled.Moreton Bay bug pasta too was over cooked,Salt & Pepper Calamari was edible and the kids steak was like shoe leather,over cooked.Portions were quite... small but not the prices. How does an establishment that serves such below par food survive. More

Sad to see a great venue wasted by over priced and very average quality meals. Eaten there many times over the years but has been in a slow decline. They seem to be more worried about office staff than a good quality Chef. If you... mention anytime about a bad meal on their facebook page they block you from commenting. In fact the Manager actually threatened to bar me from the club for commenting about a Mothers Day fiasco there, which I posted. So much competition around the area. I suggest other venues More

Southport Yacht Club Marina, located on one of the most beautiful waterfronts on the Gold Coast.

With 300 berths in the Marina, we are also home to Australia’s Largest Floating Megayacht Berth at 160 meters, accommodating vessels up to 135 meters. The Megayacht berth offers up to 600amp power , camera surveillance across the dock, grants a drive on pontoon for ease of provisioning and a service road for craning or bunkering. 

Southport Yacht Club is also an Australian Port of Entry for clearing vessels arriving and departing Internationally.

Additional facilities on hand include, 24hr security surveillance, access to wireless internet, proximity card Access, gym, onshore amenities, 24hr fuel jetty with fuel bunkering available for larger vessels. SYC hardstand has a 35m ton travel lift providing easy access to 20 hardstand places ranging in size from 20ft to 50ft.

Move over #vanlife, ’cause given the rise of sailing channels like Sailing La Vagabonde over the years, #boatlife is here to stay. As a result, thousands of people are on YachtHub daily looking at the cost of a boat.

As an Australian, there is no greater place to become a liveaboard than the Gold Coast. Balmy summer days and mild waters make it the perfect spot, and it’s little wonder why I lived there for 4 years right across from the Southport Yacht Club.

I recently did some research to find some marinas on the Gold Coast that allow liveaboards, either short-term or long-term. And while you can stay on an anchorage for 7 days, sometimes you might want to stay longer to ride out an approaching storm front, restock your boat or do some necessary repairs. 1. Mariner’s Cove Marina (Main Beach)

My #1 best pick is always Mariner’s Cove Marina. Its location means you’ll have access to grocery stores, boutiques and public transport links. If you fancy catching some waves in the morning, then Main Beach and Narrowneck serves up an incredible 2-foot to 5-foot swell in the winter months.

2. Southport Yacht Club

Right next door to Mariner’s Cove is the Southport Yacht Club. Often it’s less likely that you’ll find an available berth here but alas, still worth a mention given the central location. There is nothing better than having lunch here on a weekday and catching up with the locals who all have one too many stories to tell.

3. Runaway Bay Marina (Hollywell)

The Runaway Bay Marina is still quite central and a place to spot some of the nicest waterfront homes around the Gold Coast. It can get a little crowded here so it’s worth calling up in advance to check if any of the 196 marine berths are available for temporary bookings. This is one popular spot for cruising catamarans and yachts coming in from Fiji and the rest of the South Pacific.

4. Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard

If you need some serious work done to your hull, engines or batteries, then you need to get it over to the Gold Coast City Marina and Shipyard. This place is huge! Aesthetically-speaking, it isn’t the best given it’s a full-service boat-works area just like The Boat Works mentioned below, but well worth checking out regardless.

5. Calypso Bay Marina

The latest marina to open on the Gold Coast is Calypso Bay who allows liveaboards for short-term occupancy. The area is stunning and quite a distance away from the party boats and tourists of the Gold Coast. The area is still in development but you can see some real money here with the beautiful waterfront homes and upmarket dining options.

6. Tweed Marina

Fancy heading south? Across the border and into New South Wales, you’ll find Tweed Marina. They allow liveaboard cruisers for the short-term and this is the only marina you’ll find until you get down to Brunswick Heads. That said – you won’t want to leave with just how peaceful it is here at Tweed Heads with its numerous cafes and vibrant waterways worth exploring. No jet skis here and rarely do you find powerboats too!

7. Hope Island and Hope Harbour Marinas

There are two marinas here. You’ve got Hope Island Marina and Hope Harbour Marina which both allow liveaboard cruising couples needing a save haven for a little while. You can stay here year-round except for April and May where the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show comes to town.

8. The Boat Works

The Boat Works is a highly recommended place to find quality marine mechanics and upholstery experts, as well as staying in the marina. The place is quite busy and no doubt you’ll spot a few large superyachts as well. Based on Coomera, their claim is “Australia’s greatest boatyard” and I certainly would agree. Plenty of marine trades here and world-class facilities, though not always the best place to enjoy the serenity.

9. Bayview Harbour

A top spot to enjoy the quieter side of the Gold Coast is Bayview Harbour. This happens to be one of the oldest and most established marinas on the Gold Coast and you can certainly stay here as a liveaboard. Unfortunately, apart from some local cafes, there isn’t much shopping or much else to do here, so it’s really for the short-stay liveaboards.

Getting Started

And I’m done! That’s 9 great marinas worth checking into if you live aboard your boat. Of course, you’re unlikely to stay long term (several years) in these locations but you can certainly stay short-term. To get around some of the rules, you can always head off to one of the Gold Coast anchorages for a few days and then return, or head off to another one of these beautiful marinas!

Bald Head Island Marina

Located two miles off the coast of southport, the picturesque bald head island marina serves as homeport to the bald head island yacht club. the marina offers easy access to the intracoastal waterway and atlantic ocean via a deep-water shipping channel with federally maintained navigational aids..

Along with dockside conveniences such as showers, laundry facilities, casual dining and boating supplies, marina guests can enjoy the island’s fine dining, outstanding golf and pristine beaches.

Overnight rates are $3 per foot per night with a 24’ minimum. Electricity is additional: 30 amp $5 per day; 50 amp $7.50 per day; 100 amp $15 per day.
