Virgin Gorda Yacht Charter

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in terms of area in the British Virgin Islands and you can see the list of Virgin Gorda yacht charters here .

The beautiful Caribbean Virgin island called Virgin Gorda was discovered by the famous explorer Christopher Columbus in 1493. The island is located on the western side of Aguilla at a distance of about 12 miles from the Tortola Island, which puts it smack bang in the middle of luxury yacht charter territory. The Caribbean is growing in terms of yachting popularity and the Virgin Islands are seeing an increasing number of large crewed luxury yachts and superyachts, many of which are available for charter with CharterWorld. Being the Caribbean this area is popular for both sailing yachts, as there is an abundance of warm Caribbean trade winds, and motor yachts too because of the wonderful beaches, harbours and ports to visit and the closeness of many islands.

The land mass area of Virgin Gorda is 10 square miles and the topography mainly consists of mountains and pristine beaches. People who would like to join a Virgin Gorda charter yacht can easily reach the island by air or a luxury yacht which they can take from either of St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and San Juan. Virgin Gorda is well known in many luxury yachting circles as a picturesque destination offering plenty of shots for the avid photographer.

The Topography of Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is just about 9 miles long between the farthest points from end to end. The best part of taking the Virgin Gorda yacht charter services is that the island is not spoilt due to extreme commercialization. It is not frequented by very large crowds that throng the other popular destinations such as Bahamas and Barbuda. Virgin Gorda has a pristine coastline with the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. Here you can take part in a lot of marine and land activities. You can also marvel at the beautiful sightings from your luxury yacht. The island boasts of several high profile villas and marinas. The yacht clubs are definitely a place to visit if you are looking forward to book yacht holidays. The island is an important staging point for yacht charters who then continue their onward journey to other islands.

Yacht holidays are fun

With the experience of Virgin Gorda yacht holidays the tourist can also enjoy walking on the beach. Virgin Gorda is known to have some of the finest beaches in the world. You can also visit the heritage settlements and the native villages and interact with the people. If you are the adventurous types then you can take part in several activities such as nature trails and hiking. The Virgin Gorda Harbor is located on the southern side of the island and it is a suitable point from where you can begin your yacht holiday. If you don’t want to stay overnight at the island then you can take the regular ferry services available connecting the island of Tortola and the Charlotte Amalie Island.

The central and the northern parts of Virgin Gorda have topography that is dominated by hills and peaks that are covered with verdant vegetation. Gorda Peak is quite famous amongst the yacht charter circles and it’s the highest point standing at 366 metres above sea level. The island is known for its pristine beaches and beach resorts located in bays such as Mahoe Bay, Devil’s Bay, Pond Bay and Savannah Bay. These resorts offer contemporary facilities and they serve as excellent accommodation options to compliment your Virgin Gorda yacht charter holiday. Don’t forget to visit one of the many national parks and nature sanctuaries.   The British virgin Islands offers all the main types of yachts for charter including luxury sailing yachts and crewed motor yachts. Virgin Gorda’s cuisine is a delightful blend of Caribbean flavors, fresh seafood, and international influences. Here’s a glimpse into the culinary delights that await in this tropical paradise:

Fresh Seafood

Given the BVI’s abundant marine life, seafood features prominently in local cuisine. From succulent lobster and shrimp to snapper and mahi-mahi, savor an array of freshly caught delights.

Conch, a type of mollusk abundant in the Caribbean waters, is a staple ingredient in many BVI dishes. Conch fritters, chowder, and cracked conch are popular preparations showcasing the island’s culinary diversity.

Caribbean Spices and Flavors

Caribbean cuisine is famous for its bold and vibrant flavors. Dishes often incorporate a variety of spices, such as jerk seasoning, allspice, nutmeg, and thyme. Meals have a combination of sweet, savory, and spicy elements.

West Indian Roti

Influenced by Indian cuisine, West Indian roti is a beloved dish in the BVI. This flavorful meal consists of a flatbread stuffed with a variety of fillings. The fillings include curried vegetables, chicken, goat, savory sauces, and chutneys.

Bushwackers

No visit to the BVI is complete without indulging in a Bushwacker, a popular cocktail synonymous with the islands. This creamy combines rum, Kahlua, coconut cream, and chocolate syrup, topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Rum Culture

As the birthplace of the famous Pusser’s Rum, the BVI boasts a rich rum culture that permeates its culinary scene. Sample a wide range of rum-based cocktails, including the iconic Painkiller. This classic drink is a concoction of rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut garnished with grated nutmeg.

Leverick Bay - Virgin Gorda British Virgin Islands

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, is the second most populated island in the BVI. It’s known for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life. This Caribbean destination offers relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty. Thus, it’s one of the favorite luxury yacht charter destinations for sailors, divers, and beach lovers.

Furthermore, the island is picturesque, with untouched charm and a serene atmosphere. The “Fat Virgin” boasts a unique landscape adorned with rolling hills, hidden coves, and stunning rock formations. It’s also a tranquil escape, away from the crowds. So guests can appreciate the island’s natural wonders and rich cultural heritage.

Overall, this destination offers many attractions. You can see granite boulders, natural pools and grottos, and breathtaking views. Explore the island’s white sand beaches different water activities, and learn about the local culture.

Virgin Gorda’s history is intertwined with its captivating name and notable events. In fact, Christopher Columbus gave its name “Fat Virgin.” This is so because it resembles a reclining woman.

In 1598, a fleet of twenty-six ships led by Sir Francis Drake anchored near the island. They also utilized the large hill at Bitter End to practice for their impending attack on San Juan. They were targeting to control Puerto Rico from Spanish rule.

Overall, these historical events add depth to the island’s charm. It also provides an interesting story to its cultural heritage, making it a popular tourist spot today.

Where is Virgin Gorda located?

Located in the West Indies, it is one of the beautiful British Virgin Islands. This stunning island has a unique geography, approximately 80 miles (130 km) east of Puerto Rico.

It comprises two rectangular sections connected by a narrow strip of land called a spit. The southwestern part features a flat terrain. It also has massive granite boulders. Some have a towering height of over 30 feet (9 meters).

In contrast, the northern region boasts hills. They rise dramatically from the water. The Virgin Peak is the highest point at 1,359 feet (414 meters).

Generally, the region’s weather is typically sunny throughout the year. But it’s particularly popular during the winter months. This is so because people from colder regions seek a Caribbean getaway from the chilly and snowy conditions.

The warmest period is usually in early August. The average highs are around 90.8°F (32.7°C). At nighttime, temperatures rarely drop below 78.9°F (26.1°C).

During winter, accommodation rates are at their highest, and the beaches are bustling with visitors.

On the other hand, the driest months are March, February, and June. The months with the lowest chance of rainfall are in February and early March.

Generally, the wind is moderate, although it tends to be windier in July, August, and June. The busiest or peak seasons are January, July, and August. Thus, hotels are the most expensive due to high demand.

Conversely, October is the least likely month for tourists to visit the island. Thus, making it the least expensive time to travel to the island.

How do you get to Virgin Gorda BVI?

The main airport in the BVI is Tortola’s Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (also known as EIS) . It serves as a gateway for guests coming from Canada, Europe, and South America. Next, you’ll require flights to connect with other Caribbean places like Puerto Rico, St Martin, St Thomas , and Antigua .

Or you can fly from Puerto Rico or St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda Airport on a small plane.

About Virgin Gorda

Why is Virgin Gorda a good sailing destination?

Virgin Gorda, nestled amidst the sparkling waters of the Caribbean, has long been the siren song for sailors worldwide. As one charts the waters surrounding this gem of the British Virgin Islands, it becomes evident that the allure of Virgin Gorda is more than just its breathtaking vistas. Yachting.Rent, with its seasoned expertise in navigating these waters, delves into the reasons that elevate Virgin Gorda from a mere destination to a sailor’s paradise.

First and foremost, Virgin Gorda’s diverse maritime landscape stands unparalleled. The island boasts a captivating blend of serene bays, deep water channels, and a coastline that weaves a tale of nature’s grandeur. The iconic Baths, a labyrinth of massive granite boulders, tidal pools, and interconnected grottoes, present a unique sailing and anchoring experience. Such geological wonders are not just sights to behold but adventures waiting to unfold, as sailors navigate, anchor, and explore these natural marvels. Beyond the Baths, beaches like Savannah Bay and Spring Bay offer tranquil anchorages, where the azure waters kiss golden sands, creating a serene backdrop for a day of relaxation or water-based activities.

Virgin Gorda’s nautical appeal also lies in its strategic location and favorable sailing conditions. Positioned in the heart of the British Virgin Islands, the island serves as a perfect gateway to other nearby destinations. Sailors can easily embark on island-hopping adventures, with destinations like Tortola, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke just a sail away. The prevailing easterly trade winds, coupled with the island’s sheltered bays, ensure that both novice and experienced sailors find the conditions challenging yet rewarding. The consistent winds, combined with the island’s clear waters and minimal tidal changes, create an environment where sailing becomes less about combatting the elements and more about harmony with nature.

Lastly, the vibrant local culture and infrastructure of Virgin Gorda enhance the sailing experience. Yacht-friendly marinas, equipped with modern amenities, ensure that sailors find all the conveniences and services they need. The island’s welcoming inhabitants, rich history, and a tapestry of culinary delights and local events mean that time on land is as enriching as time spent on water. With Yachting.Rent, sailors not only get insights into the best sailing spots but also a taste of Virgin Gorda’s local charm, from hidden eateries to cultural festivals.

In essence, Virgin Gorda isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience, a blend of nature’s wonders, favorable sailing conditions, and rich cultural tapestry. And as Yachting.Rent sets sail in these waters, every journey, every anchor dropped, and every sunset watched becomes a testament to why Virgin Gorda reigns supreme in a sailor’s heart.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Virgin Gorda

In the heart of the Caribbean, Virgin Gorda stands as an epitome of maritime allure, attracting sailors from every corner of the globe. As one contemplates a nautical adventure around this jewel of the British Virgin Islands, a pivotal decision awaits: to sail with a traditional sailing boat or to cruise aboard a catamaran? Yachting.Rent, with its vast maritime experience and intricate knowledge of Virgin Gorda’s waters, provides a discerning perspective on this quintessential dilemma.

Sailing boats, with their slender profiles and deep keels, are often the choice for purists who cherish the age-old tradition of sailing. The sensation of tilting with the wind, hearing the hull cut through the waves, and feeling the raw power of nature is an unmatched experience that sailing boats offer. Their design, rooted in centuries of maritime evolution, is optimized for performance, making them particularly adept at tacking into the wind and navigating the deeper channels of Virgin Gorda. Moreover, their typically smaller draft allows them to access more secluded bays and inlets, perfect for those wishing to discover the island’s hidden gems. When you charter a sailing boat with Yachting.Rent, you’re not just renting a vessel; you’re embracing a legacy, a journey steeped in tradition, and a connection with the sea that’s intimate and profound.

On the flip side, catamarans, with their twin hulls and expansive decks, champion space and stability. Their design ensures minimal heeling, making them particularly appealing for families or groups seeking comfort and a steadier voyage. The expansive deck space and trampolines at the bow offer ample room for relaxation, sunbathing, or even an impromptu dance session under the Caribbean stars. The shallow draft of catamarans is an advantage in Virgin Gorda’s waters, allowing sailors to anchor closer to the beach, especially near shallow attractions like the Baths. Chartering a catamaran with Yachting.Rent ensures a blend of luxury, space, and a panoramic view of Virgin Gorda’s coastline, making every moment onboard an indulgent experience.

Set your course for the BVI’s Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour (VGYH), now the preeminent and most complete marina on the island. Over the last 18 months, there’s been a new management team hired, significant infrastructure work, and expanded marketing of the marina including a new website with a first-time online booking and payment platform. There’s also a new dinghy dock, significant improvements to the docks, new shops, a spa, new eateries including a coffee shop, and extensive landscaping and signage upgrades. This work will continue into 2024 with further enhancements in the boatyard as the property prepares for the hurricane hauling season that starts in June.

“One of the most exciting upgrades to VGYH is the addition of a seasonal calendar of events designed to attract visitors to the marina and Virgin Gorda while creating a new buzz for the destination,” says Russell Harrigan, secretary of the BVI Investment Club, whose portfolio includes VGYH, Village Cay Marina, Coralisle Insurance, and desalination company Ocean Conversion.

The calendar kicked off with a successful inaugural New Year’s Eve celebration, dubbed ‘More for 2024’. This event was built around the concept of sustainability and trash to treasure. Old cars, empty oil drums, used pallets, scrap wood, and old bicycles were among the décor items.

Destination: Virgin Gorda — Devil’s Bay and the Baths

Courtesy Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour

The ‘More for 2024’ event spanned three main areas across the marina. First, the Children’s Village was hosted in the 9,000-square-foot supermarket building. Decorated with hundreds of Chinese paper lanterns, the space became a magical oasis that catered to children of all ages with festival food, face painting, basketball, swings, inflatables, air hockey, and more. The artist in residence, Tia Modeste, created numerous pieces of work, paintings on cars and bikes, backdrops, and several pieces for the children’s village. Most of these artworks will remain on permanent display at the marina, perfect for Instagram and other social media opportunities. The event also featured art by Tiea Lettsome and Allysa Kaddoura. The second space was dedicated to general admission, with the main stage and food and beverage vendors, while the third space, the rooftop offered a more intimate space and an ideal platform for viewing the fireworks. An incredible performance by USVI artists Rock City ended the evening. Plans are already in the works for New Year’s Eve 2024. www.vgyh.vg

Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Last updated on June 7th, 2023 at 09:19 am

Welcome to Virgin Gorda, a picturesque island in the British Virgin Islands. Explore the unique granite boulders of The Baths, stroll along stunning beaches like Savannah Bay, or snorkel in vibrant coral reefs. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of this island paradise, indulge in fresh seafood, and let the natural beauty of Virgin Gorda take your breath away.

virgin gorda yacht

Much like the USVI’s St. John’s, Virgin Gorda is one of the few tropical islands not yet over-commercialized. The small island is the third largest of the British Virgin Islands and an intimate paradise of small villas, sparkling water, and friendly local smiles.

The island has a rich history. It was first seen by Christopher Columbus in 1493, was used by pirates as a base of operations in the 17th century, and like many of the Caribbean islands was later home to several sugar plantations in the 1700s until England abolished slavery in 1838. Virgin Gorda offers the splendor of dramatic tropical views and powder-white beaches among lush rolling hills giving visitors the quiet sense of owning their own bit of paradise.

U.S. Dollar – There is a FirstCaribbean Bank ATM in the Yacht Harbor area, but ATMs are available throughout the island.

Wireless Internet:

WiFi is available at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, at the main office or the Bath & Turtle Bar (with purchase). The Bitter End Yacht Club has free wireless.

Where You Dock in Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Like many smaller islands in the Caribbean, Virgin Gorda does not have a dock large enough to accommodate larger cruise ships. As a compromise, large ships dock off-island and tourist are transported to Spanish Town by ferries and smaller boats. You will dock at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, which has many shops and restaurants.

Some smaller ships may dock in the North End of the island, where you will tender to Bitter End Yacht Club, which is a resort complex complete with souvenir shops and restaurants.

Getting Around Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Taxis:  For such a small island with a small population, Virgin Gorda has a huge number of available taxis. Drivers charge per person, so the more people you can find to share a ride, the cheaper it will be. You can also hire a taxi driver to take you on a tour of the island for a reasonable price.  If you plan on doing this, make sure the taxi has air conditioning – not all do.

Car Rental:  You can rent cars across from the yacht harbor. While there are a variety of options such as small cars and scooters, it is recommended you rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle such as a Jeep to handle the steep hills, and rough terrain if you happen to go off road. Driving is on the left. Rates will run about $60/day on average.

Ferry:  The Bitter End Yacht Club ferry runs between Gun Creek and the yacht club every half hour and is free of charge. The road systems aren’t complete, so taking the ferry is the only way to reach the yacht club. There is a ferry that runs between Spanish Town and The Bitter End Yacht Club (North Sound Express) for a fee. It also runs between Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Shopping In Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Most of the shopping on Virgin Gorda is within the hotel complexes, or at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Club, which is the main commercial center. Popular shopping for tourists can be found at Top of the Baths, Leverick Bay. Virgin Gorda offers the boutique shopping popular in the Caribbean with a small variety of local island art and photography, jewelry, and of course, British Virgin Island outerwear such as jackets, hats, and t-shirts.

Dining In Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Many of the islands restaurants are found in the secluded resorts which provide not only great ambiance, but amazing views of the island. Most restaurants offer Caribbean-based options, but you can also find some international cuisine and barbecue. Restaurants range in price from low to fine casual dining. For a bit of variety try the following:

Pavilion at Little Dix Bay:  An open-air dining pavilion with views of the sea popular for unique themed buffet dinners.

Hog Heaven:  An amazing barbecue venue with pulled pork, ribs, barbecue chicken, and potato salad. If you aren’t careful, you may feel the hint of the Southern U.S.

Top of the Baths:  A mix of standard American Fare, as well as a blend of island favorites. The food is almost as delicious as the views are amazing.

Hilltop Restaurant at Biras Creek Resort:  Considered by many to have the most beautiful views on the island, the restaurant also may provide the most interesting and delicious food on the island. The restaurant provides a flavorful and constantly changing menu of upscale local and international foods.

Fat Virgin’s Café: Nice mix of local island fare such as roti and pan-fried fish, you can also find delicious barbecue cooked up family style right in front of you.

Things To Do in Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

The Baths | Virgin Gorda Activity

The Baths: One of the most popular destinations in the British Virgin Islands, the baths are a beach area with unique geologic formations. Granite boulders form natural tidal pools, arches, tunnels, and scenic grottos.

Copper Mine: National park with the ruins of a 19 th century copper mine. First constructed in 1837, by 1862 it had been abandoned. Now the mines offer a look into the past of mining on theisland. Interestingly, many of the island’s locals are descendants of the Cornish miners and the island women from that mining period.

Hiking: Virgin Gorda offers many areas to hike it’s lush forest. Perhaps the most popular is the Gorda Peak National Park which provides several trail, abundant wild life, and access to the highest peak on the island, Gorda Peak.

Snorkeling/SCUBA Diving: With some of the most beautiful water’s in the Caribbean you can snorkel or SCUBA dive nearly anywhere off the island. There are several diving charters available on the island which will take you out to view stunning coral and underwater wild life.

Prickly Pear Island National Park: The Prickly Pear slopes are covered in cactus and slide downward toward several powder beaches that offer great swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation.

Virgin Gorda | Cruise Port Guide

Virgin Gorda offers some of the best beaches in the world with its tranquil waters and powdery white beaches. Due to the limited number of resorts on the island, many of the beaches are hidden coves and intimate settings you can enjoy in peace. The few resorts on the island provide similar intimate settings with amenities for beachgoers.

Little Dix Bay: Cradled between two small mountains and a coral reef Little Dix Bay beach is hidden in its own intimate cove.

Upper Beach Coast: Two beaches, Savannah Bay and Pond Bay provide nice white beaches overlooked by the islands highest point, Gorda Peak.

Mahoe Bay: Shallow reefs highlight this beach with an abundance of marine life including sea turtles.

Nail Bay: Amazing reef snorkeling, and rocky hikes that connect Nail Bay to Long Bay.

Long Bay: Reached by a small hike, and arguably the most beautiful and secluded beach on the island. Provides great swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation.

VIRGIN GORDA YACHT HARBOUR PRESENTS A SPECTACULAR NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION

  • Entertainment

By Ronn Grant

virgin gorda yacht

The Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour say they are thrilled to announce its official New Year’s Eve event.

On December 31st, 2023, the grounds of VGYH will be transformed into a premier event space bringing the best of the BVI to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda. The event will feature a wide selection of entertainment, a vibrant marketplace showcasing an array of local vendors offering delicious food, trendy apparel, and one-of-a-kind crafts and art pieces.

” We are excited to host More for 2024 and bring together the diverse beauty of the British Virgin Islands in one vibrant celebration,” said Manager of Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, Alejandro Chometowski. “Virgin Gorda has a unique offering within the Territory’s tourism product and we thought it was time to find a way to celebrate this and showcase our community, our culture, and our island to the world.”

The theme More for 2024 seeks to provide more local entertainment opportunities for the community, more ways to showcase the arts and culture of the BVI, more ways to attract tourists to BVI shores, and more ways for the community to gather and celebrate the diversity of the Virgin Islands.

Entertainment will be at the heart of More for 2024. Event organizers have booked the Virgin Islands premier live bands and cultural entertainers to help patrons usher in 2024 with the unique style of the Virgin Islands.

Speaking on preparations for the event, Chometowski says the team of VGYH along with local contractors have been busy with construction and renovations around the complex. “Last December it was decided that we would undertake a new year’s eve event and that has been the goal post we have been working with through 2023 to update the property both with its physical appearance, as well as services and businesses.”

Chometowski adds, “As we embark on a new year, More for 2024 aims to foster a sense of community, gratitude, and optimism. The event will feature a special moment of reflection to remember and honor the challenges and triumphs of the past year while setting our intentions of togetherness and more for the year ahead.”

Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour invites everyone to join in its official new year’s celebration. With picturesque views, exceptional entertainment, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, this New Year’s Eve celebration promises to be a satisfying end to 2023 and an exuberant start to 2024.
