Devin & Mike’s Yacht Club Wedding: Belle Haven Club in Greenwich, CT

When I had the pleasure of meeting Devin & Mike I was so excited to potentially shoot their wedding in Greenwich, CT– I always like getting out of the city and it’s a rare treat that I get to shoot anywhere as genuinely “coastal” as their venue, the Belle Haven Club .  And as you can see they’re both totally over-the-top *beautiful* people (see their cute engagement session here too!) but I simply couldn’t have predicted how gorgeous their whole wedding day would be.  Zack and I arrived early (as usual), so we drove to each of the locations and scouted out spots for the portraits we’d later shoot at Bruce Park , walked around at the Yacht Club and made sure the church had a parking lot!  We still got to The Delamar Hotel early and picked a spot down by the boats for the couple’s first look before we split up to start shooting the getting ready and bridal details.  Devin chose a sleek and sophisticated lace gown by Monique Lhiullier that featured an amazing back– it was PERFECT on her, and I don’t think Mike could have been happier when he finally laid eyes on her.  After a couple quick portraits with their adorable dogs, we drove to Bruce Park with the wedding party and family members to get those group pictures taken care of before the ceremony at St. Mary’s Parish in downtown Greenwich.  After their ceremony we hustled over to Belle Haven (unfortunately sunset was already over if it had ever looked like a sunset– it was a fairly cloudy day– so we decided to do some night portraits of the couple later in the night instead) and during cocktail hour I shot all the reception details I could before the tables filled up with people– Devin had planned one of the most beautifully detailed wedding receptions I’ve seen in some time!  She thought of everything– from the octopus cake stand down to the rope-shaped drink stirrers everything at this wedding was nautically themed and/or shaded in blues… though Amy Hardisty of White Hall Events was there doing all the day-of event coordination, I beleive that Devin had pulled together all the event design concepts herself.  I was so impressed with the array of beautiful ideas on display… blue lanterns throughout the tent, blue patterned china vases and frames with blue-toned photos of Devin and Mike at various stages of life…blue patterned tablecloths on accent tables– and Devin even designed the programs, placecards, and favors herself!  The solid orange flowers arrangements and bright pashmina shawls for the bridesmaids provided the perfect splash of complementary color for all these lovely blues.  It was just a beautiful wedding from top to bottom.  But enough about the details.   Mike gave the *most romantic* toast to his new wife after they cut their cake.  I wish I could quote it verbatim, it was so good.  In short he shared some of the special, cute things she does which reinforce how much he loves having her in his life, and finished by saying he could have married her the day he met her… and you could just tell how completely smitten he is.  I can’t wait to see where life takes this sweet couple– may their love continue to grow and deepen over the years to come!

After the Ceremony the guests enjoyed cocktails on the lawn and were then invited to the Ballroom for the Reception. The spectacular sunset, the amazing music, delicious food, gorgeous flowers all added up to a very very special occasion.

Marianne, carrying white calla lilies as her bouquet, was indeed a happy bride.

Here’s what you need to know about the Detroit Yacht Club, along with a few considerations.

Brief History of the Detroit Yacht Club

The Detroit Yacht Club is located on Belle Isle, surrounded by the majestic Detroit River. The Club is one of the oldest and largest Yacht Clubs in the world. Envision welcoming your guests to a sumptuous Mediterranean-style villa, brimming with intriguing artistic riches and stunning architectural designs. Consider the magnificence of captivating your guests with all-encompassing riverfront views and the brilliance of the Detroit skyline as your personal backdrop.

The Club has a combination of large and intimate spaces, where they can accommodate gatherings of varying styles and sizes. Their professional food and beverage team is ready to impress you with a wide range of savory, artfully presented culinary delights.

Reception Areas & Guests That Can Be Accommodated

1. The Ballroom Located on the second floor, the Ballroom has vistas of both the Detroit River and the Detroit Yacht Club Harbor. You can expect to enjoy a stunning veranda that wraps around the entire length of the room with doors allowing access outside. You can fit up to 400 people into this lovely space.

2. The Fountain Room The Fountain Room is also located on the second floor, and is a spacious area with a bar, overlooking the Detroit Yacht Club Harbor and the Detroit River itself. The fountain was discovered during renovations and restored in 1993. This room can accommodate both ceremonies and receptions, and can fit up to 175 guests in this space.

3. The Sweepstakes Room Originally the Billiard Room and located on the third floor, the Sweepstakes Room is perfect for smaller weddings, dinner events, and showers. You can fit up to 72 people into this area.

4. The Trophy Room If you want an intimate wedding in a room filled with history, then you should consider the Trophy Room. They have many well-known trophies here, including one commissioned from Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1919. You can fit up to 50 people into this space.

5. Star Light Circle Located outside of the Grill Restaurant and Port Haven on the first floor, this space overlooks the Detroit Yacht Club Harbor and is a beautiful setting for an outdoor wedding ceremony. It has two large oak trees that serve as a focal point for the Bride and Groom with the Detroit Skyline as the background. You can fit 150 people into this space.

Cost Considerations

With the Detroit Yacht Club, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000-$20,000 at this venue. Please also know that if you are not a direct member of the club, there will be a $500-$800 room rental fee. To hold your ceremony here, there will also be an additional $800 ceremony fee. (Prices are current as of 02/21/2020.)

The club offers a variety of venues for your ceremony as well. The Grand Ballroom is ideal for larger weddings up to 420 guests, along with several more intimate venues for smaller wedding parties.
