Somes Sound is the only fjard* on the eastern Atlantic seaboard. It is connected to the ocean among the many mountains of Mount Desert Island, all formed by glaciers 360 million years. A sail up Somes Sound is exhilarating. Ocean swells drop astern and dramatic cliffs plunge into the deep water. At the head of the fjard lies graceful Somes Harbor, where the shoreline levels.

* According to the Maine Geological Survey Somes Sound's geology makes it "like a fjord, but not quite. So another Scandinavian term, ' fjard', applies better to the sound. A fjard is smaller in all ways than a fjord, and is simply a glacially carved embayment that is drowned by the sea. "

Approach & Cautions

Photo: Schooner at anchor in Somesville Harbor by R. Rubadeau

The sound is about 4.5 miles long and 0.2 miles wide, lying between steep rocky shores. It has a narrow entrance with few dangers, but one CCA member cautions, “The green flasher at the entrance to Somes Sound is small and sometimes quite difficult to pick up. The east side shoals up from place to place, so it’s better to favor the center to the west side of the sound once reasonably north of the green flasher at the entrance.” Sailing in the sound can sometimes be trying because of the topography—be ready for downdrafts from the surrounding mountains, with cats’ paws reaching out in all directions.

Docking, Anchorages, or Moorings

Among the most inviting stops for overnighting in Somes Sound are these:

  • Valley Cove under Eagle cliffs. One of Somes Sound’s most popular anchorages, this historic spot is on the western side, not far from the Norwood Cove anchorage. Proceed through The Narrows into Somes Sound, then just beyond Sand Point to starboard, turn to port and head into Valley Cove, looking for about 30 feet MLW along the south side. The bottom tends to be rocky and pebbly, but I’ve always managed to find enough good, sticky Maine mud to hold my anchor well. Protection from prevailing winds is excellent, but don’t be surprised by shifting winds with occasional gusts coming down the mountains. Even with her all-chain rode and a snubber terminated at the waterline, my 100,000 lb. boat tends to dance around the anchor a little while anchored here.
  • Hall Quarry , an inactive quarry is about 1.7 NM north of Valley Cove to port. It’s too deep for anchoring, but the John M. Williams & Co. Boatyard (207-244-7854) offers rental moorings in July and August and a float (about 20 feet alongside) where water can be taken on. The yard has a 50-ton Travelift and offers full-service repair and restoration services, with indoor and outdoor storage and service, accommodating up to 200 boats. Close attention to detail and quality for boat services of any level of complexity on both power and sailboats as large as 55 feet in length and up to 7-foot draft. Offering complete woodworking, fiberglass, metal, composite, paint, and varnish capabilities, plus repairs and installations of mechanical systems, electronics, electrical, engine, and plumbing. Heated and unheated winter storage.
  • Somes Harbor is another 0.8 NM to the north. The beginning of the entrance is very narrow. Leave the red nun marking Myrtle Ledge to starboard, then pass the green can close aboard to port and proceed up to Sheep Island. Quiet, well-protected, and serene, this is a favorite harbor of refuge in nor’easters, tropical storms, and hurricanes. You’ll find a fine anchorage between Sheep Island and the mainland in about 15 feet MLW. All the moorings are privately owned and best avoided unless you know the owner.

Getting Ashore

Photo: The iconic white footbridge in Somesville - courtesy of Acadia National Park

The floats on the NW side of the Somesville town landing are privately owned, but visiting boaters are welcome to come ashore and leave their dinghies in the designated area at the SW corner of the large float. The village is a short walk away.

Ashore you’ll find the picturesque village of Somesville, the first village to be settled by Europeans on Mount Desert Island . It’s part of the Town of Mount Desert . Like the sound, it’s named for Abraham Somes (1732-1831), who is considered the pioneer settler on Mount Desert Island. Visitors come to Somesville to take in the sight of beautifully preserved examples of early New England architecture, the Acadia Repertory Theater , and what must be one of the most photographed bridges in the state – a simple white footbridge in the center of town that arches over the stream flowing from Somes Pond to Somes Sound. Somesville enjoys close proximity to Echo Lake , Long Pond , and Acadia National Park hiking trails .

Among the very limited services in Somesville is Freshies , a convenience store with fresh food for take-out. Freshies is in the opposite direction from “downtown” Somesville. Turn left for the museum, gardens, church, and library. Turn right for Freshies.

Across Somes Sound to the east of Somes Harbor is the Henry R. Abel Yacht Yard (207-276-5057) and the ever-popular Abel’s Lobster Pound restaurant. The yard offers summer rental mooring and slips for lease, and there’s plenty of room for anchoring in good-holding mud off Abel’s at the head of the sound. With two Marine Travelifts and nine inside storage buildings, Abel’s offers mechanical, electrical, fiberglass, engine and generator, gel coat, painting, buffing and waxing, rigging services, and carpentry, plus winter and summer storage.

OUR REVIEWS

What CCA Members are saying:

Sailing up and down Somes Sound can be delightful if the wind is favorable. Valley Cove offers a wonderful hike up the hill, and Somesville is a lovely sheltered anchorage.

When in Somesville, a truly wonderful treat is a fruit pie from Mount Desserts. You can preorder by phone (207-244-8710) or just stop by if the sign is out. The shop is located at 2 Brookside Road, which is a few hundred feet after the Somesville Museum heading south on Rt 102. It’s an easy walk from the guest dinghy dock. Hours are Thursday – Monday 11am to 5:30pm or until they sell out. Be sure to ask about the strawberry rhubarb pie, which is their specialty. Their motto: “It’s always pie time!”….. I agree!

Mount Desert's Maritime Past, Present, and Future

abel yacht yard

Look at any map of Mount Desert Island or visit one of its many harbors and you’ll see why boatbuilding has been one of the biggest local industries here since the 1700s. When sea captain, shipbuilder, and businessman Abraham Somes arrived on MDI from Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1761, he chose what became Somes Harbor as the site for a lumber mill and shipyard. By the 1800s, four other shipyards had joined his in Somes Harbor alone: the Herrick Yard, the Mason’s Point Yard, the A.J. Whiting Yard, and a second Somes-owned yard. The owner of the Whiting Yard built the current home of The Gallery at Somes Sound as a storehouse where two-masted schooners could dock nearby and unload cargo directly into the building using a ramp. While that might seem like a tight squeeze, at least 45 vessels were built and launched along that shore between 1763 and 1889.

Some of these ships were among the 368 schooners, brigs, and sloops built on MDI and the islands of Cranberry, Tinker’s, and Thompson’s between 1782 and 1902. According to the Mount Desert Island Historical Society , the cargo transported on them around the world “included such ephemeral items as feathers from the birds shot down here or on MDI and ice cut from the local ponds in winter; plenty of fish from the surrounding waters (often smoked or dried) or collected further out to sea; milled lumber or cordwood from the local woods; cobblestones picked up off the beaches, or granite cut from the many quarries around the island.”

abel yacht yard

The second half of the 19 th century ushered in an economic trend that is still in full swing today: summer visitors. This change was felt in the boatbuilding industry with a shift to building and maintaining smaller pleasure boats rather than large cargo ships. Visitors and summer residents began booking small vessels for day or evening cruises, and sailboats designed for racing began to dot the waters of MDI.

The final major changes to the industry arrived during the early 20 th century with the use of engines (eventually internal combustion engines) and the introduction of fiberglass and plexiglass in boatbuilding. The construction of larger vessels remained concentrated in and around Southwest and Bass Harbors, while the yards of Mount Desert either downsized or shuttered.

Thanks to the pleasure boating and commercial fishing industries, Mount Desert has been able to keep its maritime spirit alive. Mount Desert Yacht Yard has been at the head of Somes Sound since the 1940s with Farnham Butler originally at the helm and son John the current owner. In the 1970s, two boatyards launched just south on Somes Sound and sit right across from each other: Henry R. Abel & Co. Yacht Yard on the east and John Williams Boat Company (also known as Jock Williams) to the west in Hall Quarry. Both yards offer service, repair, and storage. Abel’s also has a renowned restaurant on its site and has been the locale for The Neighborhood House’s annual Bash at the Boatyard event for several years running. Jock Williams, with a crew of just over 20 employees, has a brokerage department and very recently, after a 10-year hiatus, began building boats again, with the most recent launch on July 21, 2022.

abel yacht yard

The location of these two yards harkens back to the heyday of boatbuilding on Somes Sound. The features of the Sound that make it a popular attraction, deep yet relatively calm waters, also make it a perfect place to store, build, and launch boats.

While many on MDI know of Hinckley Yachts as a Southwest Harbor-based company, their footprint stretches past Somes Sound and around Sargent Head to the former Mount Desert Yacht Yard in Northeast Harbor. “This yard has a great feel to it,” says Kirk Ritter, General Manager at Hinckley Yachts. “It has a completely different feel than Southwest Harbor, and therefore a different appeal for our staff.” Standing in the middle of the yard at the corner of Harbor Drive and Sea Street, it’s easy to see why. The yard is tucked into the harbor while providing a gorgeous view of the docks and water beyond.

abel yacht yard

Referred to as the Hinckley Small Boat Division, this location is perfect for handling small craft. “We have a little travel lift and slip right here allowing us to handle small wooden boats like Bullseyes that are hard to run through a big yard like Southwest,” says Kirk. Most of their slips are rented out seasonally and they store customer vessels indoors during the winter months.

It’s not just the tranquil location that draws employees to this yard. As Kirk explains, “We have diehards that don’t want to work production, just service, and that’s who we get.” The Northeast Harbor yard is also home to various events, from post-launch celebrations to the recent Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County’s annual Hospice Regatta of Maine. For the latter event, Hinckley set up one of their shop spaces to host attendees, complete with green and white sails as curtains. Kirk envisions this as a place where other events can be held and members of the public can stroll down to have a picnic and enjoy the harbor views. “I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes and how it grows,” he says.

abel yacht yard

Just up Sea Street and around the corner on Main Street sits the brokerage office of Lyman-Morse , a boatbuilder based out of Thomaston and Camden, Maine. While Lyman-Morse launched 44 years ago, their Northeast Harbor office has been open for about four years. The office is staffed by Sales Director Eric Roos who can help customers with refits, service and storage, and new build projects, not just sales inquiries.

“We specialize in utilizing modern technologies to maximize efficiency in our projects,” says Marketing Director Mackenzie Lyman. “While our projects may look like beautiful classics, the work that goes into building them is cutting edge. The same goes for our refit and service projects – we use our decades of experience as sailors/boaters and as boatbuilders to provide our customers with unrivaled quality and cost-effective solutions to maximize their enjoyment of time spent on the water.”

One of the major challenges the boatbuilding industry (like most industries on the island) is facing this century is the housing crisis. “Most of our workforce is off the island,” says Kirk Ritter at Hinckley. “They add an extra half an hour or more to their day to work down here.” Once in Northeast Harbor though, they become a part of the year-round community. “They’ll go up to Ben’s (Main Street Variety) to get gas and lunch, for instance. Hinckley Yachts isn’t a huge business in the community but it’s still a part of it and adds to it,” says Kirk.

Abel's Boat Yard

October 24, 2000

Our haul-out was a wonderful success. In fact we liked it so much we plan to do it again when we return from our visit to the states in December. Actually, we underestimated the amount of paint that we would need once we cleaned the bottom of the boat down to the primer coat. We want to be sure that we have a sufficient amount of paint on the bottom to last for several years. To that end we have ordered seven more gallons and they should arrive in Guatemala about the same time that we return from our trip.

Abel’s yard uses a rail line for the haul-out. This was a new experience for us, and we (at least Jane) were a little nervous about how well it would go. In the past we have been hauled out by travel lifts in various marinas from Illinois to the Chesapeake. Inevitably a marina will need to have the boat brought back through a maze of turns through boats at the slip. At the haul-out slip the aft rigging must be removed and then the boat must be turned around so that the aft end can be pulled into the slip first. As the slings lift the boat out, it is impossible not to worry about whether the slings will hold that massive amount of weight.

At a rail line there is a huge carriage that goes down into the water to a point deep enough for a boat to pull right up between four stakes that will secure it to the carriage. The carriage is then brought up out of the water by cables connected to big drums. That is it! No bother, no worry. The second photo will show Satori on the way out. The Guatemalans swim out with their masks on, dive down under the boat and secure it to the rail.

We had agreed on the cost ahead of time. We were to pay $250 for the haul-out and the splash. We were also to pay $20/day for our time out of the water. The labor, if we chose to take advantage of it would be about $16.25 for each man/day, if we chose to take advantage of it. We did choose to have the Guatemalan workers clean the old ablative paint from the bottom down to the primer. We also had them polish the dark blue paint above the water line. The total was about 4.5 man/days of work. You can do the arithmetic and find that it should have been about $450 for the total. We were charged $386 for the whole thing. We stayed on board and ate most meals on board so we saved the extra cost of living off the boat. It was a very pleasant experience and we highly recommend it. The first photo shows Abel’s yard. This is definitely not the most elegant yard in the world – but who needs elegance when one is working in paint dust, sand blasting and fiber glass grinding?

The last photo will show our view from the yard. The bridge that you see in the background is the 90’ high bridge over the Rio. Our marina is just this side of the bridge and on the left in the photo.

We hope that your holidays are pleasant for all of you. We may not be in touch again until January, but you will all be in our hearts and our thoughts.
