Brian O’Sullivan: Sailing Into the Unknown

First came the boat. Then came the captain’s license. The story of how one ambitious owner took fate into his own hands to successfully circumnavigate the world in his 135-foot yacht, KOMOKWA.

When Brian O’Sullivan opened the door to a Turkish warehouse in 2010, he was met by a large boat staring back at him. That boat was KOMOKWA , a new 135-foot Horizon motor yacht whose owner had walked away from the build prior to delivery. A German investor had funded the remaining construction of the yacht, but she still lacked an owner. Following the 2008 financial crisis, the bottom had dropped out of the yachting market and the only offers on the table were lowball.

brian o'sullivan yacht

KOMOKWA bounced around the European boat shows before landing in the hands of a creditor who put her into storage in the aforementioned warehouse. On learning about the opportunity, O’Sullivan flew out to Antalya and purchased the yacht on first sight. She was exactly what he’d been looking for – the smallest possible boat that could cross the Pacific Ocean on its own bottom. O’Sullivan planned to captain her around the world and KOMOKWA was ready for the challenge. The only sticking point was that O’Sullivan had yet to obtain a captain’s license.

brian o'sullivan yacht

“I called my insurance company and said, ‘I bought a boat!’,” he laughs. “They said, ‘Great, who’s going to be the captain?’, and I said, ‘Me!’, and they said ‘No, not you. We want a licensed captain for a yacht of that size and value.’ I said, ‘What if I go to school and get a captain’s license?

Can I be the captain?’ And they said, ‘Sure, absolutely!’ So, I packed my bags, flew to Fort Lauderdale and completed my Maritime Professional Training.”

Enthusiastic and committed, he also obtained his offshore license and MCA Certificate. He then gave KOMOKWA a bulbous bow converting her into a long-range vessel but left the interior untouched. It already appealed with its owner’s suite, lounge, office and private terrace located on the bridge deck, ideal for an owner-operated vessel. To O’Sullivan’s knowledge, he is the only owner in the world captaining a yacht over 131-feet. In his opinion, why have a boat if you’re not going to drive it?

brian o'sullivan yacht

“People say, oh it must be so hard to drive a 135-foot boat… are you kidding me? It’s easier than driving a speed boat!” he says. “The wind and current have almost no effect on the vessel because it weighs so much. And docking the boat is a breeze with a bow and stern thruster.”

In 2013, O’Sullivan set forth on a three-year, eight-month adventure around the world. Departing from Vancouver, he cruised down America’s west coast to Mexico. He spent 15 days at sea while navigating the Pacific Ocean to arrive in Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands. During that crossing, daily communication with a weather forecasting company kept him alert and even provided life-saving route adjustments. And the zero speed stabilizers came in handy when both engines were shut off for three hours due to an oil clean-up in the engine room after the top of an oil filter blew off. Other than that, it was smooth sailing, but those two weeks spent crossing the biggest ocean on the planet would set the tone for the remaining 54,000nm journey

“Being at sea for 15 days with no land in sight was one of those life events where, before I left, I called everybody who owed me money and forgave them their loans,” he says, chuckling at the memory. “I mean, it wasn’t a lot of money, but I thought, if I die at sea, I don’t want this to be confusing. So that’s how I prepared to cross the Pacific.”

brian o'sullivan yacht

After “bouncing around” Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti, Australia and New Zealand, he shipped the boat to Mallorca and spent time yachting around Europe, from the French Riviera to the Balearic Islands, on to Corsica, Sardinia, Capri and the rugged coastline of Croatia and Montenegro. Dockwise (now DYT Yacht Transport) then carried the boat across the Atlantic to Maine where he cruised down the east coast of North America and on to the Caribbean. After navigating his way through the Panama Canal, he journeyed up through Mexico and California, before finally docking at home in British Colombia.

brian o'sullivan yacht

He’d achieved what he set out to do – to cross the Pacific Ocean – and KOMOKWA proved to be a dependable and loyal vessel. Now, 10 years on, the 135-foot Horizon is looking for a new owner with dreams as big as the world. As for O’Sullivan, he’s after a smaller yacht that can take him on his next adventure — the Northwest Passage.

The Hemsleys, this issue’s cheerful cover stars, are happily immersed in both the sailing and motorboating worlds, dispelling any myths of tension between the two factions. The couple chat to The Superyacht Owner about their experiences aboard their 30m Feadship La Mascarade and their classic sailing yacht Mariquita – and hint at plans that they are likely to eventually move in the direction of a larger sailing boat.

                               Stephen and Sherron Hemsley

We also chat to Brian O’Sullivan, owner of 41m Komokwa , who took the radical step of securing his own master’s ticket for a circumnavigation. At the time of writing he was planning the ‘second leg’ of the tour heading to the Caribbean, the US eastern seaboard up to Nova Scotia, Cuba, Cartagena, through the Panama Canal, to Costa Rica and all the way back to Vancouver a year later.

                                         Brian O’Sullivan

“I started this project because I’m not happy with the status quo in the industry, nor with the yachts available and the way they’re sold. - the words of Sergei Dobroserdov who also features in this issue talking about his new Dynamiq range of compact yet fast displacement yachts that he says respond to a new type of owner.

Following years of searching for the perfect sailing yacht, the iconic 32m sloop Emmaline – originally Christoffel’s Lightouse – has proven well worth the wait for her new owners. The Superyacht Owner steps on board in Porto Cervo to find out more about their buying experience – and reports back for this issue.

Elsewhere this month we talk Thailand charter with owners, captains and industry, we uncover incredible new sailing grounds in Oman and we speak to Feadship’s charismatic CEO, Henk de Vries, about his rise to the top.

41m Horizon motor yacht Komokwa sold

The 41.1-metre motor yacht Komokwa has been sold with Matthew Martin of Fraser and Alex G. Clarke of Denison Yachting representing the seller. Kurt Bosshardt of Denison introduced the buyer.

Komokwa was built in GRP by Taiwanese yard Horizon to a design by Espinosa Yacht Design and was delivered in 2010 as one of the yard’s Premier 135 series. The brokers pointed out "she was the only Premier 135 built to DNV class. She had been well maintained by her original owner of 10 years and cruised 65,000 nautical miles around the globe".

The light and contemporary interior, boasting extensive wood veneers and carpets, accommodates 13 guests in six cabins including a full-beam owner’s suite on the bridge deck with lounge and private aft deck. Interior styling is by Claudia Drettman.

There is a second master suite on the main deck, while on the lower deck lie a double and a twin cabin. All guest cabins have entertainment centres, flatscreen television sets and ensuite bathroom facilities while four further cabins sleep nine crew.

A large 70-square-metre saloon, clad in elegant wood panelling, has comfortable seating, a bar and an entertainment system including a large television screen. The aft deck is another capacious area and offers al fresco dining for up to 10 guests, enhanced by a barbecue, fridge, ice maker and television screen.

Plentiful deck areas include a vast flybridge offering the best on-board views, a Jacuzzi, bar, additional comfortable seating and further dining options for guests.

Komokwa has a top speed of 15 knots and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 2,700 nautical miles with power coming from two 1,550hp MTU 8V4000M70 diesel engines, with extended MTU warranty to May 2025. For added comfort, the 398GT yacht is fitted with zero speed stabilisers.

Komokwa was asking $6,900,000.

From Dublin to Fifth Avenue: A marriage made in design heaven

When an Irish, London-based interior design outfit was tasked with reinventing part of the five-star Berkeley Hotel, the bar, as it were, was high. The Knightsbridge hotel is already home to the Blue Bar, by the late Irish architect David Collins, who designed everything from Madonna's apartments to Alexander McQueen's store. But the Berkeley Bar and Terrace was about to become Bryan O'Sullivan Studio 's calling card.

The results are beautiful, and the British press has rushed forward with praise. A Daily Telegraph headline read "Why the Berkeley Bar & Terrace is London's chicest new hotel bar." Wallpaper magazine declared the redesigned bar was "filled with clever references . . . deftly sidestepping the space becoming too dark and oppressive". Tatler decided: "Your Instagram is about to go into overload."

Wood panelling is made from a single 300-year-old walnut tree, which fell during a storm in 2007.

Before moving to London, James O'Neill was a prominent face in Dublin clubbing as one of the forces behind the infamous War club night at Spy

Everything in the bar was designed by the up-and-coming studio, from the lighting to the furniture, "literally down to the candleholders", O'Sullivan says, over breakfast in a cafe on Thomas Street in Dublin, with his husband, James O'Neill, the studio's commercial director. Another young Irish talent, the studio's director Evelyn Conway, is back in London.

The studio was founded by O'Sullivan, from Kenmare in Kerry, in 2013, when he took on a project after working with the architect and designer Luis Laplace in Paris. Conway came on board and they set about building a design studio that refuses to repeat itself from project to project.

In a few short years, the young company, where Irish talent features strongly, has designed an apartment overlooking Central Park on Fifth Avenue in New York, yachts, a private jet, large residential projects – including a lengthy 1920s townhouse project in Paris – hotel spaces in Dublin, Girona and Cambridge, a villa in Ibiza, and other private residential projects, along with interiors at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in Connemara, where O'Neill and O'Sullivan recently got married.

O'Sullivan always wanted to work for himself, inspired by his mother's work ethic – she ran a cafe in Kenmare. As a child, he spent a lot of time with his grandfather, a builder and self-taught draughtsman. O'Neill too is inspired by his mother, the artist and the first female president of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Abigail O'Brien.

Before moving to London, O’Neill was a prominent face on the Dublin clubbing scene as one of the forces behind the infamous War club night at Spy and then Alt, as well as a singer known as Bitches with Wolves, before joining his partner at the studio in 2016.

"I don't think I was intimidated," O'Neill says of the career change, "I think I was hungry. I had worked in music before, and basically I turned 30 and wasn't Beyoncé and thought, what are I doing with my life? What's the long-term goal here? I started working in fashion and quickly realised that would be a very difficult industry to maintain a quality of life in. I was working with Henry Holland which was an incredible experience, and he was amazing . . . but I realised I needed to play catch-up and get into something and make it work. When you're working with your partner, it's not just a job, it's your life. You're building a future together."

The spaces they design look like people actually live in them, where things look well-made rather than highly stylised

If the studio does have an aesthetic despite its diverse approach, it's a sentiment that often leans into classic, clean and comfortable styles. The spaces they design look like people actually live in them, where things look well-made rather than highly stylised, and where you're as likely to find a Niall Sweeney piece on the walls as you are a piece of furniture from Dunleavy Bespoke. On what they offer, O'Sullivan says simply, "I think a fresh approach."

Nowhere is that freshness more evident than the inspired mural at the snug in the Berkeley Bar by the American artist TM Davy. “We were playing around with the idea that women used to have to sit in the snug, and men were in the main space,” O’Sullivan says. “We wanted to flip that, where the snug in this bar was the most fab place, more feminine, and the place you want to be.”

O'Neill and O'Sullivan spend a lot of time travelling, both on international projects and for inspiration. A trip to Havana last December provided inspiration for a cigar shop project that came up when they returned home, and for which they'll be referencing "a lot of the pharmacies we saw in Cuba, which are very distinct timber-clad decadent spaces", O'Neill says.

Other upcoming projects include a hidden speakeasy-type bar in Mayfair, and suites at Claridge's Hotel. The studio is also working on Cashel Palace Hotel in Tipperary. "A lot of restoration," O'Sullivan says, "Very traditional, but it will be a stunning project."

With projects coming thick and fast, and the team now numbering over 20 people, O'Sullivan enlists the assistance of his father, the former Kerry football captain and ex-manager of both the Kerry and Limerick football teams, Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, to travel to the studio's office every four or five weeks to lead team-building exercises.

“He’s got a great energy, very calm, amazing at extracting the best out of people, and making them feel they can do whatever they want to do,” O’Sullivan says. O’Neill concurs: “When people are happy and feel heard and feel that they’re part of something – which they very much are – they do their best work.”

Respect for the studio’s team is at the fore of their success and conversation. O’Neill calls Conway “phenomenal”, with O’Sullivan talking at lengths about how she led that 4½-year Paris townhouse project, dealing with 35 separate trades on site in fluent French, when she was just 23.

With Pinterest-driven tropes crowding so much interior design at the moment, what about trends that are grating with O’Sullivan at the moment? “Tiles that look like timber. Why would you do that? I always think things should be what they are. That and ceramic tiles that look like marble. Everyone’s like ‘Oh, it’s almost [as good as].’ But they’re usually as expensive as the real thing. Things should always be what they are and you shouldn’t make things look like something else.”

People get saturated with certain things, and then they'll do a U-turn. I think people want calmer spaces, a bit more Zen

O’Neill’s bugbear is “crap modern architecture – show-houses in London, these white rectangular box houses that are cold and hard”.

Some of O’Sullivan’s favourite things include the textile designer Toyine Sellers, Kempton Racecourse as the spot to buy furniture, and AD Intérieurs in Paris as a good place to spot emerging trends. He also sees the gravitation towards maximalism receding: “I feel lately it’s taking a step back again, a bit more minimal, and a bit more contemporary. We went through a maximalist period, a revival of Victorian, but lately things are going a little bit cleaner again,” he says.

“We reached peak maximalism with Annabelle’s [club] in London,” O’Neill adds. “It’s fabulous and it has its importance, but you couldn’t go any further than that.”

O’Sullivan agrees: “People get saturated with certain things, and then they’ll do a U-turn. I think people want calmer spaces, a bit more Zen. You have to be able to spend time in spaces and feel relaxed, and not feel like you’ve got something jumping out at you. That’s a huge part of design; you have to feel relaxed in the space.”

For a moment he drifts home, “I’m thinking of Packie’s restaurant in Kenmare. I think the simplest places are the best.”

Brian O’Sullivan Books In Order

Publication order of frankie and evie books, publication order of quint adler books, publication order of standalone novels, publication order of short stories/novellas.

Brian O’Sullivan Author Brian O’Sullivan was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, going to high school locally before he went off to UC Santa Barbara for college. He was naturally bright, but just did not enjoy the 9-5 life, so he dedicated himself full time to hone his already refined poker abilities. He played professionally for almost a decade, achieving some great heights, and playing against some of the very best in the world.

Knowing that he did not want to spend the rest of his life on the green felt of a poker table, he settled in Los Angeles and started penning screenplays. He had always been a writer, and enjoyed the allure in Hollywood. But it is often about who you know in Hollywood, and his scripts never found their way into the right hands. Brian began dedicating himself to writing novels, and the rest is history.

“The Bartender” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2019. Olive is a Los Angeles bartender that has been unlucky in love. She hopes this will change when one of the best looking guys she has ever laid eyes on steps foot into her bar. Yet he is just not what he seems.

Austin is charismatic, tall, and compellingly attractive. However unbeknownst to the smitten Olive, he’s not dating her for her beauty, but just for her usefulness. He and his childhood buddy have got a depraved plan in motion.

Becca is a con artist and a grifter that is looking for her one big score. She has found out that Olive’s boss has got hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash at his house, which is located in the Pacific Palisades. Becca will do anything she has to in order to make it hers.

Olive winds up as the unknowing intermediary and Austin is her willing co-conspirator, however both are mere instruments in Becca’s orchestration. She’ll stop at nothing in order to get what she wants. Not even murder.

This is a multi-narrative and twisting thriller told through the eyes of one brave heroine and some unforgettable villains: Olive, who is the strong yet innocent young lady pulled into something sinister. Austin, sensing this is all going to end terribly, yet without any of the gumption to stop it. And Becca, with dollar signs dancing in her eyes, and without any regard for human life.

O’Sullivan has got a gift for scary and sick characters. His plot twists make his books like a roller coasters, with hooks in each and every chapter. The format is interesting and worked for this book, and it was nice to have first person thoughts rotating around between the different lead characters.

“Revenge at Sea” is the first novel in the “Quint Adler” series and was released in the year 2020. Quint Adler is a small town crime reporter with much loftier aspirations. Stuck in a hospital bed on his 40th birthday, and overhears a sinister conversation.

Sensing an opportunity, he begins his own investigation, bypassing the local law enforcement in the process. His inquiries lead him to the scene of a brutal murder. As well as a second one, which is even more barbaric. Then things begin spiraling out of control, and Quint winds up a suspect in the murders and starts believing that his dad’s recent death may not be an accident.

Quint attempts to clear his name however he realizes the real killer is above the law. In order to find justice, he must resort to some extreme measures: following this sadistic murderer out to sea.

“The Bay Area Butcher” is the second novel in the “Quint Adler” series and was released in the year 2020. A Zodiacesque killer brings Quint along for the ride. Quint, after he almost lost his life at sea, has been enjoying his downtime with Cara, his gorgeous girlfriend. However these carefree days come to a crashing halt.

Bay Area cops get a letter. It’s from a man claiming he is about the begin a killing spree which will go down in history. And he makes mention of Quint by name, pulling him into the case. The killings start and comparisons to The Zodiac abound, however it’s obvious The Bay Area Butcher is going to surpass him in both notoriety and victims.

He continues sending his letters, mocking the cops, needling Quint, and even giving the date that each series of murders is going to be carried out. It becomes an international tale with The Butcher’s fascination with Quint right at the forefront of it all.

“Hollywood Murder Mystery” is the third novel in the “Quint Adler” series and was released in the year 2021. Quint gets his private investigator’s license and goes off to Los Angeles so he can celebrate. In just a day of arriving, an old friend who is now a Hollywood producer, tells him that he fears for his life.

He is dead the very next morning. As Cara sees the seedy Hollywood underbelly for what it really is, Quint ignores her warnings and sets off to catch this killer. With a limited knowledge of Hollywood and an ever-increasing list of suspects, Quint has finally bitten off much more than he can chew.

Combining elements of the whodunnit and the noir genres, this one is sure to keep you guessing until the last page.

“Nine Days In Vegas” is the fourth novel in the “Quint Adler” series and was released in the year 2021. Quint heads for Vegas and begins investigating the disappearance of Emmy Peters, who is a beautiful 22 year old showgirl. There’s zero suspects and very little evidence. It is like Emmy just vanished into thin air.

Quint is still determined, his investigation that leads to beautiful women, big-time casinos, gambling, as well as other Sin City trademarks. But he is unable to make all that much progress on the case. However then he gets a text that changes everything. Somebody claims that they know where Emmy was buried.

This is the most shocking and wildest case that Quint Adler has taken on in his short career.

One Response to “Brian O’Sullivan”

I’m starting the 3rd Brian O’Sullivan, Quint Adler Thriller series (Hollywood Murder Mystery). Fascinating, suspenseful reads! Love the main characters and the storyline. The first 2 were terrific and I’m certain the Hollywood Murder will be as well. Thanks Brian for sharing your craft!

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

brian o'sullivan yacht

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
