- World-Class Infrastructure and diverse offering further reinforces Dubai’s position as a global hub For Superyachts • Streamlined legislation, increased investment in infrastructure and hosting of international maritime events contribute towards growth of Dubai’s yachting industry With its world-class infrastructure, advanced facilities, year-round sunshine, luxury marinas, award-winning tourism offerings, rich maritime history and picturesque coastline, Dubai has emerged as the quintessential yachting destination. Following Dubai’s participation recently at the Monaco Yacht Show, and the recent Gulf Superyacht Summit 2022 hosted in Dubai under the patronage of P&O Marinas with participation from government and private sectors, industry professionals, thought-leaders, experts, and yacht owners the future is looking brighter for Dubai’s yachting industry, with increased investment in marine infrastructure and facilities, streamlined industry legislation, and a proliferation of nautical events set to take place throughout the year. During the Monaco Boat Show, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) announced upgrades to marina facilities, new legislation, cruising permit extensions, the expansion of professional yachting and maritime academies for new industry talent, and more seamless processes for obtaining charter permits, alongside the streamlining of immigration and customs clearance services, further amplifying Dubai’s appeal as a global superyacht hub.   The rapid expansion of this sector has been bolstered by significant investment in yachting facilities and continued enhancement of its offering for yachts, alongside Dubai’s vast array of fine-dining restaurants, as well as diverse experiences and tourism attractions, all within close proximity to the marinas.  The rapid growth of the industry has led to the unveiling of a number of mega projects including the redevelopment of Mina Rashid as a yachting destination in 2017, and Dubai Harbour - an exceptional seafront district accommodating a wide range of upscale living, retail, hospitality experiences and mooring facilities.  Dubai is now home to 15 vibrant marinas with more than 3,000 docking spots, many of which can comfortably accommodate superyachts and mega yachts. The city’s offering is further enhanced and made more alluring by its number of dock and dine options that are available, in addition to its varied destination offerings, spanning many leisure touchpoints from heritage to entertainment, outdoor adventures to beach activities, gastronomy to family-oriented experiences, and from shopping to luxury. A year-round watersports destination Dubai’s position as a leading yacht tourism destination has been further reinforced by a range of factors with year-round sunshine and cool ocean breeze combining with unmatched aquatic sporting facilities and offerings, including self-drive boat tours, island hopping, jet ski tours, water skiing, paragliding and more, to create unforgettable experiences for yacht tourists. The recent soft launch of P&O Marinas Sailing Academy adds an important facility to host the sport of sailing. Watersports companies throughout the emirate offer a package of experiences that can be provided directly to private yachts, giving thrill seekers the chance to jet ski or waterski past some of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks. Dubai-based travel companies are well-equipped to provide a range of water-based pursuits, including diving experiences, fishing trips, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kite surfing, offering guests the chance to explore the magical marine life below the ocean. A host of lifestyle experiences Dubai continues to thrive as a popular yacht tourism destination due to its land and sea offerings, as guests can simply hop off their vessels into one of Dubai’s luxury marinas and beyond to enjoy a plethora of tourist attractions, gastronomy offerings and retail outlets. When docking in Dubai, tourists can enjoy the city’s dynamic gastronomy scene, home to over 200 nationalities and rich in cultural diversity. Similarly, when stopping in the city, visitors can discover Dubai’s tourist attractions and visit some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, including the Dubai Marina, the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa, whilst extended itineraries include excursions to The World Islands.  Alternatively, if guests wish to enjoy a more extensive experience, yachts are available to hire for longer, extended excursions. Moreover, when exploring the emirate, guests can enjoy world-class retail offerings, with the city being home to some of world’s largest and most impressive shopping malls, as well as crafts markets and traditional souks. Guests can also enjoy a number of seasonal sales and citywide retail celebrations taking place all through the year, including the world famous Dubai Shopping Festival. A vibrant events calendar The city’s offering extends beyond luxury marinas and water sports, with many yacht tourists having the opportunity to enjoy Dubai’s action packed calendar of events, with exciting activities across sports, music, arts, culture, and food. With a natural interest in yachting activities, yacht tourists are likely to Dubai Boat Show which will be hosted from 1 – 3 March 2023. This is in addition to a number of other sporting events taking place throughout the city including the DP World Tour in January 2023, and Dubai Duty Free Tennis in February 2023 and more. There are also an array of entertainment and theatrical events taking place every month at Dubai’s music and entertainment venues including Dubai Opera and Coca-Cola Arena. An extensive range of partners Dubai’s luxurious marinas and harbours are part of the city’s allure as a destination, and yacht tourists and enthusiasts alike can utilise the services of leisure travel companies that operate yacht tours from marinas in the city including Dubai Marina Yacht Club, Creek Marina Yacht Club, Dubai Harbour and Jaddaf Waterfront Marina. A number of quality and safety assured yachting companies offer bespoke itineraries, the latest watersport experiences, along with state-of-the-art nautical equipment, for a safe and refreshing day at sea.   Leading yachting destinations in the city Dubai Marina is one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods and marinas, home to an array of restaurants, attractions, shops and more. Pier 7 is one of the marina’s many distinctive dining destinations, with seven different eateries within the building, all of which offer sweeping views of the city.   P&O Marinas is already looking after some of the most exclusive and advanced yachts at Mina Rashid Marina, which boasts 454 wet berths, 160 dry berths, and the capacity to accommodate 60 superyachts without any size restrictions. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is another one of the city’s most visited yachting destinations, with a range of refined beach clubs, restaurants, sporting and leisure activities all within the destination. This marina also incorporates a boat charter operation, fully equipped workshop and a boat repair yard and is the first Marina in Dubai to be ISO Certified, making it the ideal spot for yacht tourists to dock, unwind and hand over to the skilled marina teams to service their vessels.  Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club operates two full-service charter vessels from the marina, "Sneak Away" and "Creek Breeze" for all sport fishing and leisure cruising needs. Similarly, a number of other marinas and docking points offer expert private maintenance, so keen yacht tourists need look no further than Dubai’s marinas to ensure the health of their vessels. The city has a range of offerings and amenities for crew, with a range of private clubhouses. At Dubai Marina Yacht Club, crew from across the four registered marinas can enjoy their private cigar lounge, a number of yacht clubs and two restaurants. Similarly, the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club offers crew and professional sailors an array of offerings, which include their Club House, a private hire venue, sailing and cruising lessons and much more. Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance sector, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, commented: “Dubai continues to grow in stature as a leading marine tourism destination and a global superyacht capital through the combined efforts and support of our valued stakeholders. Inspired by our visionary leadership to position the UAE as the best destination in the world to live in, work and visit, we remain committed to investing in facilities and infrastructure, whilst ensuring that the process for docking in Dubai’s marinas is smooth and seamless. We also strive to inspire people by creating new experiences and will continue to play a pivotal role in showcasing the city to the globe as an international superyacht hub and a magnet for marine leisure tourists." Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding, the owner and curator of Dubai Harbour said: “Dubai Harbour remains committed to cultivating an extraordinary maritime lifestyle in the city, inspired by our connection to the sea. The seafront district’s unique backdrop, iconic vista and accessible location are combined with comprehensive berthing and mooring facilities, providing a maritime gateway that delivers a premier, vibrant and multifaceted yachting experience.  Providing a full home port solution in one of the world’s most spectacular cruising grounds, Dubai Harbour enables direct access to the open waters of the Arabian Gulf with Dubai Harbour Yacht Club as a reference point for the future of yachting and Dubai Harbour Marinas offering the region’s largest marina, featuring close to 700 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 160m in length. We are positive that the superyacht industry holds an exciting future ahead, with a wide range of opportunities available for not only Dubai but also for the nation. We look forward to continuing to play our role in Dubai’s ambition to become the most visited city in the world.” Hamza Mustafa, Chief Operating Officer of P&O Marinas, a DP World company said: “Dubai is fast emerging as an ideal global superyacht destination. The emirate has already developed its reputation as a luxury yachting hub with the creation of several high-end marinas, making a key contribution to the nation’s economy. P&O Marinas has invested to enhance the UAE’s yachting infrastructure. We recently announced a joint venture with Al Seer Marine and MB92 Group to develop a new service centre and refit shipyard in Dubai, and hosted Sail Grand Prix, for the first time in the region. We look forward to collaborating with key industry players as we increase our footprint and reinforce the city’s position as a global hub for superyachts and sailing enthusiasts.” Mohamed Alshaali, Gulf Craft Chairman said; “Gulf Craft is proud to have been a key contributor to Dubai and the UAE’s marine manufacturing industry and a supporter of the government’s ongoing commitment to cementing the emirates reputation as an international yachting destination. 92% of all of our boats and yachts designed and built locally at our fully integrated, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility are exported to proudly fly the UAE flag in ports and marinas around the world. As a UAE born and based manufacturer, our international clients can benefit from a wealth of support services and enjoy the peace of mind of knowing we are on hand when visiting the UAE. 1 - 5 Mar 2023

By Steve Mandaluff

Following a successful return in 2022 after a two-year absence, the most prestigious yacht show in the UAE will be back in 2023 with another stunning array of yachts and luxury lifestyle products.

Spread across five days in March, the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) is now an established fixture on the yachting calendar bringing together a range of premium attractions, nautical based and otherwise, for the 25,000+ visitors who pass through the doors each year.

In 2022 the event was held for the first time in the newly redeveloped Dubai Harbour, with the remarkable venue with 1,100 berths and the ability to host superyachts up to 160m (525ft) in length, providing an apt location for such a star-studded show.

Stunning superyachts

Superyacht with skyscraper cityscape in the background

DIBS attracts many of the world’s leading yacht builders, with the yachts on display covering all shapes, styles and genres, but undoubtedly the main attraction is the ‘Superyacht Avenue’. This exclusive area brings together the biggest yachts at the show and is always a hive of activity, and a great chance to see the latest developments in the superyacht world.

Water-based activities galore

The show really is a water lover's paradise. It hosts the Dive MENA Expo each year with a series of talks and demonstrations for scuba lovers, and the watersports arena is the perfect place to try out activities like kayaking and paddleboarding. Budding fishermen can even take part in the Dubai Fishing Championships at the event.

Everything else

DIBS is a byword for luxury, with everything from sea-inspired art to luxury watches being showcased by the numerous premium retail outlets. For anyone who loves cars as much as they love yachts, the show will have a prestige parade of beautiful supercars.

If you need to take a break from the excitement of the show, there are numerous social activities to enjoy, with DJ sets, cocktail soirees and relaxed pop-up events all on offer.

Dubai Superyacht Summit 2021: What Is It?

dubai yacht summit

Photo by ZQ Lee on Unsplash

The International Superyacht Summit is coming to Dubai this year from 8-9th December 2021. It’s an important event for the superyacht industry, but what does it involve, and what happens there? Read on to find out everything there is to know about the event.

What is the International Superyacht Summit?

The International Superyacht Summit, which started in 2018 was initially dedicated to the development of the UAE as a preferred winter destination for superyachts. However, organisers are now looking to cast a wider net and address other global topics by introducing two new themes:

The first theme addresses how superyacht marina developments empower lifestyle and tourism. Also, it looks to discuss the role of the upscale yachting industry in new and consolidated tourist destinations.

The second theme concerns emerging trends in superyacht ownership. It asks how builders can cater to the needs of a younger generation of owners and charterers. This trend brings an increased awareness of environmental issues and a generation of buyers who will not accept unsustainable practices.

Where is it taking place?

This year, the Summit is taking place on the prestigious Queen Elizabeth 2 , in Mina Rashid Marina in Dubai. The Queen Elizabeth 2 reopened its doors in April 2018 as one of Dubai’s most iconic hotels. She has a rich history spanning more than 50 years and is saturated with British heritage. Today, she continues her legacy as a 13-deck hotel, dining, entertainment and events destination.

What happens at the event?

The summit, which is primarily a place for networking and making connections, includes many conferences and presentations. Top industry figures such as Farouk Nefzi of Feadship and Jan Timmerman of Royal Huisman will be of those speaking. A host of topics will facilitate thought-provoking ideas and discussions. Topics such as ‘building the perfect superyacht destination’, and ‘next-generation customer experience’ are on the agenda.

Built on pearls, oil, and sand, the UAE is a vibrant collage of centuries-old traditions where luxury, seafaring, and demographic eclecticism remain unmatched. Here’s a look at how, in the age of COVID, The International Superyacht Summit aims to take the country’s maritime legacy into the future.

The Arabian Gulf has had its finger on the pulse of the proverbial “world” since the twelfth century. Narratives of travel and trade linking Eurasia, South and South-East Asia, and China, have long captured the imagination of geographers from al-Idrīsī to Aḥmad ibn Mājid. They still do today. Fast forward to Dubai’s iconic petro-urban-cum-real estate/tourism boom of the 1970s to 2000s, and you’ll find connections in tech, finance, and transport remarkably similar to the past.

But now, a new perspective on the city/sea relationship has the UAE’s nautical community taking giant steps to build on its legacy in its own way, signaling a sea change throughout the superyacht cruising circuit. This may be the reason The International Superyacht Summit is becoming a movement of its own.

dubai yacht summit

In 2018, Dr. Fabiana Maccarini and Captain Tony Crabbe founded the International Superyacht Summit to bring the “Emirati Riviera” into focus. They’d realized that Dubai, as Capt. Crabbe puts it, wasn’t “capitalizing on its potential as a superyacht hub and also as a link between East and West for superyachts.” So, in partnership with DP World and P&O Marinas , Fabulous Yachts became the primary organizer of the Summit.

The Summit’s inaugural gathering brought together UAE heavyweights like H.E. Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem , CEO and Group Chairman of DP World; H.E. Jamal Al-Hai , Deputy Chairman of Dubai Airports; and Mohammed Al Mannaei , CEO of P&O Marinas and Executive Director of Mina Rashid, to explore the challenges and opportunities for making the UAE a superyacht hub and preferred winter destination.

Moderated by Martin Redmayne , Chairman of The Superyacht Group, the 2019 edition of the Summit upped the ante with the likes of Abeer Al Sha’ali , now CEO of Gulf Craft Inc.; Capt. Saif Al Mheiri , Director of Abu Dhabi Waterways; and Alessandro Tricoli , Partner & Head of Shipping for Fichte & Co, signaling greater participation from local UAE authorities.

Key outcomes centered on how best to pave the way for smoother access to UAE waters for superyacht owners, crews, marina developers, and operators throughout the marine supply chain.

dubai yacht summit

Majesty 120, Dubai Harbor. Image: Gulf Craft Inc.

Here’s why that’s important…

First, according to Wealth-X’s Global Luxury Outlook 2020 , Riyad and Abu Dhabi are 2 of the top 10 cities with high levels of affinity for luxury. The richest 1% own half the UAE’s wealth; and, at last count, the UAE is home to 24 billionaires .

“People want the privacy, people want the excusivity of boating as a heaven … nobody thought that was gonna happen.” -Abeer Al Sha’ali

A high affinity for luxury refers to cities where those in the upper tier of the ultra-high net worth spectrum (UHNW) with 100m+ own “major” luxury assets: superyachts, private jets, and/or substantial art collections. Yacht owners show the highest average net worth.

dubai yacht summit

Abeer Al Sha’ali, CEO of Gulf Craft Inc. Image: ISS.

Second, capitalizing on the UAE’s “natural environment” means more than highlighting geography, culture, and wealth as key drivers of growth; it also means offering personalized solutions connected to the passions, interests, and changing lifestyle preferences of UHNW prospects—look no further than the number of yacht owners living at sea as a way of riding out the COVID pandemic.

And finally, this year’s Summit (now postponed to some time in Q4 of 2021), will amplify the Gulf’s wider relationship with the industry as a point of engagement for discussions about marine infrastructure, sustainability, and “smart yachting ” (think: cybersecurity and personal data).

What crystallizes is not simply an homage to Emirati leadership, but a path forward that allows Summit-goers to seek fresh approaches to superyacht life. Approaches that are as rich and dynamic as the UAE itself.

While you’re there, be on the lookout for stalwarts like Redmayne and Al Sha’ali. You’ll also hear from Olivier Blanchet , Head of Jet and Yacht Finance at BNP Paribas, and get an exclusive keynote from Alberto Galassi , CEO of Ferretti Group.

*At the time of recording this podcast, the Summit was previously scheduled for March 10th and 11th. The date has now been postponed until Q4 2021.

The International Superyacht Summit 2020

Returning for the third year in a row with a new focus….

Image for article The International Superyacht Summit 2020

After a hugely successful first two years, The International Superyacht Summit (previously the ‘Dubai International Superyacht Summit’) returns for a third year, from 11th – 12th March 2020. The Superyacht Group is delighted to once again participate as media partner for this crucial event within the superyacht industry’s calendar.

Under the patronage of P&O Marinas, and initiated and co-organised by Fabulous Yachts, the focus of The International Superyacht Summit has previously been the development of the UAE as a preferred winter destination for superyachts on the migratory trail. This year, the Summit looks further afield, encouraging the industry to take a more collaborative approach throughout the Gulf region.

Chairman of The Superyacht Group, Martin Redmayne, will be moderating the two-day event, and further to the above, will be considering how the industry is ‘Making 2020 the start of the Gulf Strategy’, during session one on the first day.

“We are still very happy to be hosting the event in Dubai, but the new name of the event was formulated in order to attract international operators to discuss how we can develop the yachting industry here” - Fabiana Maccarini, Research and Development Manager – P&O Marinas – DP World

“We are still very happy to be hosting the event in Dubai, but the new name of the event was formulated in order to attract international operators to discuss how we can develop the yachting industry here,” said Fabiana Maccarini, Research and Development Manager – P&O Marinas – DP World.

“We have widened the scope of The International Superyacht Summit to become more regional, because we recognised that a single destination does not encourage cruising – a whole region has to develop together,” added Captain Tony Crabbe, Owner & DPA/CSO – Fabulous Yachts.

One of the new themes at The International Superyacht Summit this year will be an examination of emerging trends in superyacht ownership, and how builders can accommodate the requests of an increasingly youthful generation of owners and charterers who have a growing environmental awareness accompanied by an intolerance of unsustainable practices.

“Having watched superyacht design in the last number of years, we have noticed a shift to more sustainable yachts, and secondly, a shift towards the more ‘explorer’ type of yacht – and that’s reflective of what the younger generation want..." - Captain Tony Crabbe, Owner & DPA/CSO – Fabulous Yachts

“The themes [for this year’s Summit] developed as a natural progression,” continued Crabbe. “Having watched superyacht design in the last number of years, we have noticed a shift to more sustainable yachts, and secondly, a shift towards the more ‘explorer’ type of yacht – and that’s reflective of what the younger generation want.

“It’s a theme that I’ve noticed developing in many conferences, and in the data found within The Superyacht Report. It’s incredibly topical and it’s so important that we discuss it as much as possible. We need to use the Summit to address the emerging needs of a younger generation of owner.”

Crabbe hopes that The International Superyacht Summit will also encourage the industry to address the ways it can adapt to the change in the ways vessels are being used by younger clients. Sessions such as, ‘Zillionaire – Generation Z are driving a new market’, will look at this topic in detail. (Full programme and speakers can be found here )

The focus on a more eco-conscious generation of owners is also aligned with the goals and aims of the UAE government, which is currently focussed on a raft of sustainable initiatives. “Government policy is to become more sustainable and it’s visible throughout their departments, and it’s also noticeable how strong this policy is within the marine department,” said Crabbe.

One of the many topics being discussed at The International Superyacht Summit that will also be under the ‘sustainability’ spotlight is the re-introduction of sailing. “Sailing was prominent in the UAE many years ago but recently it seems to have been forgotten,” said Maccarini, explaining that the region is keen to increase the popularity of sailing, as it is more sustainable and it is embedded within local culture. “Sustainability is a big part of the government’s plan,” which Crabbe agrees with, and therefore thinks that the reintroduction of sailing will be warmly received by the region as it is developed.

To conclude The International Superyacht Summit, and continuing the emphasis placed on sailing by the region, there will be a Sailing Regatta from Bvlgari Yacht Club to Queen Elizabeth 2, culminating in a party whereby attendees can celebrate an enjoyable and productive two days.

To make the summit an ongoing initiative throughout the year, The International Superyacht Summit team have launched a forum that can be found on the summit's website, in order to allow industry stakeholders to express their opinions and offer their advice on superyacht industry matters. Gulf Craft Yacht Manufacturers in the UAE

Gulf Craft at the Gulf Superyacht Summit 2022

United Arab Emirates; 9 November 2022 : Abeer Alshaali , Deputy Managing Director, Gulf Craft, joined an elite panel of experts during the first day of the Gulf Superyacht Summit 2022 by SuperYacht Times , in association with P&O Marinas. The annual event is a unique platform that brings together industry professionals with a singular goal – to develop the Gulf as a superyacht destination .

Dubai is becoming increasingly recognized as one of the world ’ s rapidly emerging international yachting destinations, thanks to its world-class maritime facilities, its position as a global travel transit hub, and its rich maritime heritage. During the 2-day event, yachting and maritime enthusiasts shared insights and engaged with industry professionals including dealers, brokers, shipyards & marinas.

‘ Gulf Day ’, the first day of the Summit, focused on the Gulf region from a regulatory, business, and cruising perspective. Abeer Alshaali discussed the latest developments in the Gulf Region and Gulf Craft ’ s contribution as a locally home-grown Emirati company.

As one of the world’s leading fully integrated boat and yacht manufacturers Gulf Craft designs, develops, builds, and delivers all its high-quality vessels at its shipyard in Umm Al Quwain in the UAE. Gulf Craft is the world’s leader in composite hull production, consistently raising the bar in design and performance, and further cemented its position as an innovator in the use of composites with the Majesty 175 , the world’s largest composite production superyacht. Although most of Gulf Craft’s Superyachts crafted by its brand - Majesty Yachts , have been sold outside of the Gulf Region, the other brands under the company’s umbrella – Nomad Yachts , Oryx & Silvercraft offer versatile yachts, sport cruisers & leisure boats. All of which underlines the shipyard’s commitment to promoting leisure boating & cruising opportunities in the UAE.

With major ports such as Dubai Harbour and Mina Rashid providing facilities to cater for boats and yachts of all sizes, the UAE is rapidly emerging as an international yachting destination but also as a hub for the community and the crew.

Patricia Caswell - QC Manager and General Manager of Gulf Craft Services joined the expert panel for the “Looking After the Growing Fleet in the UAE” session.

As the superyacht fleet grows globally and in the region, the marinas need to be well equipped and so do the local shipyards like Gulf Craft for all types of service and maintenance needs.

Gulf Craft takes pride in the provision of maintenance, after-sales & warranty services to its clientele. With its in-house and multi-skilled service team as well as state-of-the-art facilities,  Gulf Craft caters to different yachts and boats from all brands – not only Gulf Craft.

The Gulf Craft Service Centres are located in our shipyard in Umm Al Quwain along with a stand-alone service centre in Ajman. All kinds of maintenance and services are available at both of these locations such as general repairs, mechanical, and electrical systems, interior refits, fabrication & restoration of stainless-steel accessories and other services.

Here are some snippets and moments from the event:

Iconic yachts: Inside the build of 162m superyacht Dubai

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The creation of the iconic yacht Dubai was far from straightforward, with the build changing hands three times. Dubai was the largest yacht in the world by volume at the time of her build, with a gross tonnage of 12,488GT. She was originally intended for one royal family but went on to be used by another royal entirely. Commissioned by the Sultan of Brunei’s brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, Dubai started her life in Germany with naval architecture developed by Blohm+Voss (now part of Lürssen Yachts ), while design came from the UK’s Winch Design . In 1998, the project rolled to a standstill, with work completed on only the steel hull and part of the aluminium superstructure. The project was lying on a covered floating dock at the Blohm+Voss yard, and liquidators went out into the market to find potential buyers.

Her name gives the next part of the story away: the partially built yacht was sold to the Dubai government. “Once Jefri fell out with his brothers, his assets were seized, including the yacht which was at early stage of construction,” explains Kostis Antonopoulos, the former managing director of Platinum Yachts, which eventually oversaw the build of Dubai . “In fact, at that time I was working at SETE of Latsis group and we offered for the project, but Dubai offered more and they got it.”

Initially, the Dubai government assigned the build project to Karam Sadikoglou in Turkey. The dock, partially built yacht and containers holding equipment such as main engines and generators were sent to Sadikoglou’s facility in Turkey. However, progress was slow, and the Dubai government demanded the project be transferred to the UAE. With progress still slow and costs skyrocketing, Sadikoglou left the project. Antonopoulos was brought in to finish the build under the banner of Platinum Yachts , a subsidiary of Dubai World. The project had almost 800 people working on it, not including the hundreds of subcontractors. Antonopoulos’s job wouldn’t be an easy one – he had to reorganise the structure of the build team, restore confidence in the project and gain the confidence of the Palace. Sultan bin Sulayem, the chairman of Dubai World, served as the in-between for the owner and yard.

“The design of Dubai was quite ahead of its time, and although she had an enormous size the design did not flirt at all with the shapes of cruise ships,” says Antonopoulos. “And except for the hull, the rest was built and outfitted by people who had no idea what a yacht looked like.” Antonopoulos flew employees to the Monaco Yacht Show so they could see the details that make a superyacht. “It was great experience for them and a quantum leap to their knowledge and understanding,” he says.

The interior design was completed in-house by Platinum, and most of the build-out was by local contractors in Dubai. “The brief was simple: the owner wanted a floating Burj Al Arab – and he got it,” says Antonopoulos of the colourful interior which he describes as an “attack” on the senses. There are many custom details, such as the handmade tiles in the swimming pool, which are lit up by embedded optical fibres. Her massive volume afforded space for 48 guests and 88 crew. Dubai also had a cinema , disco, helideck , and a garage holding a submarine and a variety of toys.

As Dubai was built for a royal, security was a priority. “I asked a computer security firm to hack the yacht’s network , and while we thought that we had a very secure ship, the guys hacked it in 30 minutes! Of course, we redesigned the security,” says Antonopoulos. Another day, the owner came on board and discovered the lower decks did not have a clear GSM signal, so ceilings had to be ripped apart to add repeaters. Challenges to make the yacht SOLAS compliant were resolved by sending materials for lab tests to obtain class approvals.

Antonopoulos, who currently serves as managing director of Samos Steamship Co, looks back fondly at his time working on the build of the iconic yacht Dubai . “I enjoyed building a really good team,” he says. “When I arrived, the people in the project were working in isolation and there were competing teams… I managed to bring them together and make them understand that by cooperation and teamwork we can not only achieve successful completion of the yacht but we can also enjoy our time together!”

It’s been quite a while since the royally iconic yacht Dubai was finally launched in 2006, but Antonopoulos says she stands the test of time. “I think her design is timeless and she can even be considered a classic now.” Dubai sails under the UAE flag and is known to be an active yacht, recently spotted cruising in the waters off her namesake city.
