The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Powerboat vs. a Sailboat

powerboat sailing yacht

The decision between owning a sailboat vs. owning a powerboat can be a tough choice. The marina costs for both will be the same (depending on their size), and they both will have maintenance expenses related to their motors and other equipment. The real differences lie in how you intend to use it and what kind of experience you hope to have on the water.

If you want to fish and relax on the water, then the powerboat is the right choice for you. If you feel a sense of pride in navigating the water and weather with your own bare hands, then a sailboat will be more your style.

We’ve put together a list of pros and cons in owning and operating a powerboat vs. a sailboat to help you make your decision between the two lifestyles.

A powerboat is an ultimate Bay and ocean boat and is great transport for bays or short fishing trips into the wide-open water. Whenever you get the urge, you can hop in, turn the key, and go wherever your heart desires.

  • Low Clearance. If you have bridges between you and many of your planned destinations, you’ll want to get a powerboat. No need to worry about mast height preventing you from taking a trip.

{{cta(‘3a5967fc-6bee-452d-90a9-20e4f06fa41a’)}}

  • Motor Sound. If you don’t like the constant noise of a powerful engine, then the loud motor on the powerboat will be a con for you.

A sailboat is the perfect boat for people who want to connect to the water and weather on a primal level and understand how to navigate the world on their own power. If you want to live the ultimate boating adventure and explore the world by boat, then a sailboat is the boat you want.

  • Quiet. Because sailboats rely on wind instead of the power of a motor, the ride is quiet. Only the sounds of the surrounding water, the whistling wind and the snapping of the sails to keep you company.
  • Energy-Consuming. Sailing is a very hands-on lifestyle. It is often said that those with powerboats live for the destination, while those with sailboats live for the journey. A journey in a sailboat requires constant adjustment of the sails, steering, and sometimes even adjusting your plans if the weather turns.

Sailboat vs Powerboat - Which is Right for You?

Sailboat vs Powerboat - Which is Right for You? | Life of Sailing

Sailboats and powerboats both have unique advantages and disadvantages. You have to weigh the pros and cons of each to know which boat is right for you.

Sailboats require a more hands-on approach, which many people prefer. Yet, powerboats have less maintenance and more speed. Which kind of boat you choose depends entirely on what kind of experience you want to have.

Powerboats are easier to operate, and they require a little experience. But, they are costly to keep running and you’re reliant on how much fuel you brought on board.

On the other hand, sailboats require training and experience. But, sailing is the purer boating experience, and many people prefer it because it offers them the freedom to travel anywhere in the world with only the wind.

Table of contents

Should You Get a Powerboat?

Powerboats are fast, fun, and spacious. For people who just want to get out on the water, without much setup, motorboats provide that easy access.

Depending on the boat, there are tons of family activities to do, such as tubing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, or fishing. Or, you can just enjoy a cruise around the waterways.

Powerboat Pros

Powerboats typically have more deck space because there isn’t as much hardware taking up space as in a sailboat. So, you can take out more people at a time, which is a pro for people with big families or who plan on taking many people out with them each time.

Often, the galley and cabin area has more space in a motorboat as well. People who plan on taking long off-shore fishing trips prefer motorboats because of the deck space for gear and people. Also, motorboats don’t have the same deep hull as a sailboat, so you can get into shallower waters if necessary.

If you’re new to boating, a powerboat might appeal to you more than a sailboat because there isn’t as much training involved in learning how to operate it. Sailboats take months (sometimes years) of experience to get confident with. With a motorboat, all you need is a GPS and a vessel license.

Also, to operate a motorboat, you’re only reliant on the sun shining. You don’t have to wait for wind conditions to be perfect. You can just get up and go whenever you feel like it. Unlike with sailing, where you are subject to changes in wind and tides.

Powerboat Cons

Even though powerboats are easier to operate and give you more space, they are more expensive to operate. You’re reliant on the engine to move, and you’ll likely use a lot of fuel each time you go out, which can quickly add up. Also, it’s less environmentally friendly than a sailboat, which uses minimal amounts of fuel.

The engines on powerboats are more expensive too. If for some reason you have to replace Or repair the engine on your boat, you can expect to pay a pretty penny. For that reason, it’s important to do regular check-ups and maintenance on your engine to keep it running smoothly.

The engine itself is also loud and smelly, which some people might say retracts from the experience of being out on the water. For people who get seasick especially, that smell doesn’t help.

Basically, with a powerboat, expect to pay more and have an experience that’s focused more on the water activity, rather than the joy of being on the water.

Should You Buy a Sailboat?

Sailing is one of the oldest methods of transportation, and that classic romantic feeling remains. With sailing, you have to pay attention to wind conditions, before you go out and as you’re on the water.

Sailboat Pros

Many people prefer sailing because it forces you to be in tune with the elements and the boat itself. Sailing is a very hands-on activity that requires training and practice to do effortlessly.

Because more effort goes into sailing, most people find it to be a rewarding experience that rejuvenates and refreshes the senses and the mind. You could compare operating a sailboat to doing yoga. All the pieces have to flow together, including the people on board.

Even small sailboats have trolling motors onboard. But, most sailors try to use the motor as little as possible and rely solely on the wind and tides. Not having a large engine saves you money on fuel and maintenance costs.

Sailing is much better for the environment than powerboats are. Sailing doesn't do any damage to the environment, as long as you stay off reefs and don’t allow trash to fall into the water. Motor usage is minimal, so you don’t contribute to the world’s fuel consumption as much. Many sailors pride themselves on being able to sail their boat without using the motor at all, even when it comes to docking.

Also, since sailboats rely on the wind, you can travel anywhere in the world if you want. There are countless accounts of people crossing oceans with only the wind in their sails.

Or, if sailing across the Atlantic isn’t for you, many people enjoy island hopping in the Caribbean for months at a time. If that appeals to you, you might be a sailor.

Unlike with a motorboat, you can go virtually anywhere on a sailboat with a bit of weather planning and manpower, no fuel necessary.

Sailing is a more satisfying experience and a quieter one as well. Since wind powers a sailboat, there’s no engine noise or smell to hinder your experience.

Some might say sailboats are for those people who are more adventurous at heart.

Sailboat Cons

Even though some people enjoy the hands-on aspect of sailing, it does require training.  It’s dangerous to operate a sailboat on open water without proper knowledge of its workings.

Sailboats have a lot of moving parts and hardware. Many people grow up sailing and get their experience that way. But, if you aren’t someone who grew up sailing, you should consider a sailing class or even asking an experienced sailor to take you out and teach you what they know.

If you’re someone who doesn’t want to take the time to learn how to sail , it might not be the right boat for you.

Then, there’s the fact that you’re reliant on the right conditions for sailing. If there’s no wind or too much wind, your sailing experience won’t be as enjoyable or even possible. If you live somewhere that doesn’t have regularly good sailing conditions, that might prove to be a major con for you.

Or, if you don’t have a schedule that allows you to go sailing whenever the conditions are right (which could be in the middle of the week), you might not get as much sailing time out of your sailboat as you’d like.

There is no quick outing on a sailboat. It requires planning with the weather and tides, setting up the rigging and sails, and being at the mercy of the wind. So, if you don’t want your outing to take up most of the day, sailing might not be for you.

Because sailboats have deeper hulls, you have to be careful of shallow areas. It is possible to get stuck with a sailboat.

Also, many people choose to keep their sailboat in a slip at a marina because anything over 20’ is more difficult to transport and store. With a deck slip, you can keep the mast up and the rigging ready to go, so there’s less set up a time when you do want to go out.

So, if you’re in the market for a sailboat, make sure to check the cost of local dock slips as well and decide if that’s in your budget.

Because of the sails, mast, and rigging, you have less deck space with a sailboat. To get the deck space you desire, you’ll likely have to counter with a larger sailboat.

Finally, sailing is more of a commitment than a powerboat, but it’s a more rewarding experience that boating purists deem worth it.

Sailboat vs Powerboat: Which is Right for You?

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to deciding on a sailboat or a powerboat. Ultimately, it comes down to what kind of boating experience you’re looking for, and how much time you’re willing to commit to it.

Motorboats are a hobby, while sailboats are more of a lifestyle.

If you want to get out on the water without much fuss on choice weekends with your friends and family, a powerboat will get you out there. But, expect to pay high fuel prices and sacrifice some of the experience of being on the water.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a way to get closer to nature, yourself, and possibly explore the world, a sailboat is the vessel for you. A sailboat requires more training to operate, more time to plan trips, and often you get fewer amenities with it.

Despite that, sailing is a purer boating experience that forces you to focus on the task at hand and the elements around you. If you plan to sail with your family or friends, it’ll be a bonding experience for everyone involved.

Sailboat vs. Powerboat: What's the Best Liveaboard?

So you've chosen to live on a boat—the first step towards a pretty awesome dream. Now you gotta start figuring out the logistics. First of which is the choice of the kind of boat you wanna be using - sailboat or a powerboat?

This article gives you all you need to know to make that choice, all the pros, and cons of both so you can easily decide which one is a better liveaboard for you.

What's the best liveaboard, sailboat or powerboat? Generally, sailboats tend to be better liveaboards, since they are more spacious, cheaper to buy, cheaper to operate, and provide better peace of mind than powerboats. Sailboat hulls are also among the most stable designs available. Powerboats are faster, but typically also smaller, and are a lot more expensive to run.

Here are the best liveaboard for different categories:

Let's dive deeper to help you decide what is best for you!

Considerations for a liveaboard boat:

What type of boat is the best liveaboard, peace of mind, ease of use, communication devices, the romance of it all.

In deciding which boat type is best to live on, you need to consider the following categories:

  • Comfort - here it is a tie
  • Speed - here powerboats win
  • Peace of mind - sailboats are a winner
  • Cost - sailboats win again
  • Ease of use - powerboats take the prize
  • Communication - slight win for sailboats
  • Ecology - sailboats win
  • Romance - subjective, but sailboats tend to win

First of all, a small word of caution - while researching the age-old 'sailboat vs powerboat' question, be careful when reading opinions - instead, look at simple facts. Unfortunately, this is a bit of a PC vs Mac kind of situation, with two zealous camps that would swear by their choice no matter what. Objectivity is tough to find.

So remember - it is all about facts and how these suit your specific needs. I myself do have a bias but will keep it to myself. I've spent a fair amount of time on both sailboats and powerboats, so I'll just be honest, and will let you choose.

powerboat sailing yacht

Since we are talking about liveaboards, let's start with comfort, because over time, that will become one of the most important aspects for most.

There is no clear 'winner' in this category, as there are pros and cons to both, but when we get to the subcategories, things start to be a bit more clear.

So, for instance, when it comes to space, powerboats tend to be more open. By design, they are usually boxier, which makes for a larger amount of interior space.

Sailboats, on the other hand, take hydrodynamics into account, so their hulls are narrower and sleeker, which is great for efficiency but eats away at the space.

The same goes for deck space. Since on a powerboat, there are no masts, sails, or lines to get in your way, it is more comfortable to move around. Powerboats also often have a flybridge, creating another 'floor' which adds to the overall usable space. And adds a whole lot to visibility.

powerboat sailing yacht

Things change quite dramatically when we get moving or into rougher seas, though. Thanks to the heavy and deep-reaching keels, sailboats are way more stable and will keep more level.

As opposed to powerboats that don't have these keels, have shallower drafts, and as a result, high center of gravity, so the movement of the waves translates to the hull a lot. They dance around on waves, so expect plenty of broken mugs and hard times when cooking.

The seasick ones will suffer, and so will comfort. This is to such an extent that smart people of the world developed gyroscopes for powerboats that keep them more level. But that is a solution for larger boats only, and it's also an expensive and power-consuming one.

Then again, when under sail, sailboats heel, especially if going 'against' the wind. Meaning your world will suddenly shift potentially tens of degrees. Those who don't like heeling, be aware.

When talking about comfort, I gotta mention the noise and vibrations. When I was speeding around the islands of Croatia on a 46 ft Jeanneau powerboat, I honestly dreaded the moments under power and couldn't wait to get to my destination so I could turn the engine off. Even if you enjoy the roar of a motor, it gets seriously annoying after a while.

For liveaboards, speed usually isn't a priority, but you should know what to expect from your purchase.

Yes, powerboats are generally faster than sailboats. The average cruising speed of a sailboat is somewhere around 6 - 8 knots, while powerboats can easily go around 20 or more if you put your foot down.

But wait, there is a twist! You see, the hull speed is the same for both sailboats and powerboats. Once you want to go over it, the power demands increase drastically, and the power to speed efficiency curve just drops to hell.

Now whether that is good or bad depends on whether you mind that or not. We will discuss cost, comfort, and other implications of high fuel consumption later. But it is safe to say that for passages where efficiency is a thing, the powerboat's power actually doesn't bring much extra speed.

But to be fair, powerboats pick a direction and go straight towards it. Wind power and direction have less influence on their speed and direction than on that of sailboats that have to tack, meaning they have to go a longer route and whose speed drops with the wind.

Very important factor. After all, it is supposed to be your home, and if your home doesn't bring you comfort but rather constant stress, it isn't much of a home, is it? So peace of mind is a big part.

Now there isn't a huge difference between the reliability of a powerboat and a sailboat. They both respond similarly to crashes and waves rolling over them, though a sailboat is harder to capsize.

What needs mentioning is the means of propulsion. Accidents happen, and if your engine breaks on a powerboat, you will either have to tow yourself with a dinghy if you have one, or pay for a tow service.

Neither is a very comfortable option if you are in the middle of a long passage, hundreds, if not thousands of miles from the coast.

powerboat sailing yacht

A sailboat, on the other hand, has an engine, mainsail, and the foresail, so unless all three of these break, you always have a backup. Actually, even if your sails rip and mast breaks, there is a fair chance you will be able to fashion some sort of a sail to get moving.

This ties into another topic, which is the range. A sailboat has, theoretically, an unlimited range . That gives you peace of mind when planning journeys since you won't have to calculate how much fuel to take on longer journeys and whether there are fuel stop options on the way. And if you realize your passage is too long for your diesel tank, you won't have to fill your boat with stinky fuel cans.

Unless you've got an electric engine and solar panels, that is. Which is a thing these days, one I hope to see more of.

Of course, we have to talk about the cost of it all. This will be a deciding factor for many. Let's first address what's on everybody's mind - fuel. A powerboat will consume large amounts of it, and it costs.

With a consumption of around 6 l/nm, the aforementioned Jeanneau ate up around $1,100 daily on fuel, and though we were covering quite a lot of distance that a liveaboard necessarily wouldn't, this isn't a negligible budget item for many.

Sailboats have motors too, but they don't use them that often and even if they did, all the time, because of better hydrodynamics, they need less fuel to get around.

Moving on to upkeep costs, with sailboats you'll need to pay for the maintenance of sails and rigging. Most boat owners replace sails every 5 - 10 years, and for a 30 something footer, this will cost around $4,000. Give or take a lot depending on the usage, materials, and all that jazz, but you get the point.

powerboat sailing yacht

Then again, powerboat engines are significantly more expensive, and since they are used more often, they will require maintenance and replacement more often. So all in all, none is a clear winner when it comes to maintenance costs.

Last but not least, there is the purchase cost. This is a tricky one to answer - generally, powerboats are more expensive to purchase, but when buying a boat, there are so many variables to consider, like size, power, condition, equipment, that you would be better off looking at specific offers that are in your geographical and financial range than going by a rule of thumb.

Unlike the previous matter, this has a clear winner. Powerboats are way easier to use. They require less upfront knowledge to get from point A to point B.

If a person who has never been on a boat gets on a powerboat, I am confident they will be able to get to their destination without much hassle (if the seas are calm).

On the other hand, operating sails isn't intuitive. On the contrary, I mean - sailing against the wind? What the hell, right? Yet it is possible.

powerboat sailing yacht

On a powerboat, you just press a lever and go; not much more effort is needed. On a sailboat, you gotta move around more and work with sails. Now whether that's a good or a bad thing I'll leave up to you.

I'm not sure if this belongs here or to the 'peace of mind' category, but powerboats have a much shallower draft.

With a sailboat, you need to be aware of your keel that goes several meters deep, and you won't be able to go to shallow places that would be reachable by powerboats.

In practice, this isn't really a thing that would make your sailing experience any different from that on a powerboat, but you gotta be mindful of it when going close to the shore.

This is something to think about, though it isn't often considered. The main communication tool of sailors is the VHF, which is a line of sight thing. So having a tall mast to put your transmitter on is a definite plus as you will gain miles and miles of additional range.

Then again, with satellite communications, you have to take into account mast shadow, which creates interference - something powerboats don't have to deal with.

I know, I know, many of you are rolling your eyes now. But the greenness of it all is a hot topic these days and is becoming hotter every year (Global warming joke, get it? Haha.). So there is a fair chance that many of the aspiring boat owners take this into account too.

And the winner here is clear - unless you've got a solar-powered boat, a sailboat is a much more eco-friendly option. And your home won't be called a 'stinky' by the fellow seamen.

This one is rather intangible, and some might say unimportant - but let's be honest, it is what we all got into sailing for, not for spacious salon layouts, good mileage, or hydrodynamic hulls, but for the romance of it. Now which side you will stand on here is a matter of opinion rather than something you can measure, so I'll give you mine, and you see what you wanna do with it.

On powerboats, you get the feeling of power and speed that an equally priced sailboat just won't provide. Which is cool, I gotta give them that.

But sailing to me seems more romantic. Not in the hearts and flowers kinda way, but in the Jack Sparrow one. You feel free, the sense of adventure is there, sailboats seem to have a soul that powerboats don't.

Powerboats are a set of parts that go, but on a sailboat, all these parts put together create freedom. And yes, I kinda stole Jack Sparrow's quote here.

I've heard somewhere that when you get on a powerboat, you do it to get somewhere. But when you get on a sailboat, you're already there.

I'm not exactly sure why, perhaps it is the unlimited range, thus the possibility to theoretically go anywhere without needing much, perhaps it is the fact that a sailboat is more in tune with the sea and weather and wind, but it just feels homier.

And finding this homey feeling on the sea is what you came here for.

BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1884

The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 136 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe.

Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies.

WIDE RANGE OF SAILING YACHTS AND POWERBOATS

Sailboat Range

We built our first sailboats over 135 years ago and many things have changed since then. The oak we once relied on has been replaced with strong but lightweight resin and carbon fiber. Where canvas once caught the wind, now it’s Kevlar and Vectran. We’ve transformed dark, confining saloons and cabins into bright, open living spaces. And the list of innovations in hull design and navigation continues to grow at a rapidly increasing pace.

However, some things haven’t changed and never will. Benjamin BENETEAU’s philosophy of building the strongest, safest, most beautiful boats on the water is alive and well. The BENETEAU family’s pride in craftsmanship and passion for performance can easily be recognized in every FIRST, FIRST YACHT, FIGARO, OCEANIS, and OCEANIS YACHT built today.

Knowing what to keep and what to change – that’s why BENETEAU continues to set the bar in sailing.

Powerboat Range

In North America, we might be considered by some to be a late-comer to the powerboat market, but in fact, we’ve always been a major force in it. As with most things, we have our founder, Benjamin BENETEAU, to thank. He was one of the first to put a petrol engine on his fishing trawlers in the early 1900s, thus changing the French commercial fishing fleet forever.

His successors found that power was a perfect fit for the bold, new hull materials they were pioneering in the ’60s. Since then, new technologies in propulsion have always found their way aboard a BENETEAU first, and power has long been part of our equation for success.

This New Electric 110-Foot Sailing Yacht Gives You Two Ways to Cruise Emissions Free

Baltic Yachts wants you to see its newest sailing yacht in all its glory.

The Finnish yard just unveiled the first interior images of the newly delivered Baltic 110 Custom. Named after an ancient Caribbean deity, Zemi was commissioned by an experienced seafarer seeking a yacht for high-speed global adventures.

Billed as a versatile, high-performance cruiser, the 110-footer was penned by Malcolm Mckeon Yacht Design. The U.K. studio previously worked with Baltic on the award-winning 112-foot sailing yacht, Liara , which hit the seas in 2019. Crafted from advanced carbon composites, the new sloop showcases sleek lines, a shiny metallic bronze hull, and a streamlined coach roof.

Zemi is also the third Baltic to be equipped with an electric propulsion system. Twin 129 kW Cummins generators provide grunt to a large bank of lithium-ion batteries that power an electric Danfoss motor. Baltic says the e-motor is quieter, cleaner, and smoother than traditional internal combustion mills. In fact, Zemi can cruise in "silent mode" sans emissions for long periods, according to the brand.

In addition, the yacht is equipped with twin rudders and a telescopic lifting keel with a 27-ton bulb that can reduce the draught from 20 feet to 13. It also has several headsail options that are suitable to different weather conditions.

Spearheaded by Andreas Martin-Löf, the interior features walnut and limestone veneers, sleek, modern furnishings, and cleverly integrated lighting. The main cockpit can be enjoyed in all conditions, with a fold-down spray hood and full-length removable bimini protecting guests from the elements. (Alternatively, the space can be left open for lounging in the sun.) Below deck lies a lounge, galley, and cabin for overnight journeys.

Another distinctive element of Zemi is McKeon trademark, wrap-over teak decking that runs from the bow right to the edge of the transom. The transom is expandable, too, meaning that the water is even easier to access from the swim platform. Also at the stern is a large garage that can hold a Williams tender.

Zemi was built in Baltic's Bosund facility and left the launch site in Jakobstad in August 2023. The yacht has spent the past few months cruising the globe and is expected to compete in the St Barths Bucket this March. Godspeed, Zemi .

The Ferretti Group, one of the world top companies specializing in the design, building and sale of motor yachts, with an amazing portfolio of eight of the most exclusive and prominent brands, is thrilled to announce its participation in the Moscow Boat Show 2013. From 12 to 17 March, two of the Group fleet’s most successful yachts will be presented as absolute premieres for the Russian market: motor yacht Ferretti 530, representing Ferretti Yachts , and the 27-foot Iseo superyacht tender by Riva .

Ferretti 530 Yacht to make her Russian premiere at Moscow Boat Show

This year’s Moscow Boat Show will also offer the Ferretti Group the opportunity to announce all yachting enthusiasts in Russia and Northern Eurasia a new important achievement in its international growth: the renewal of its exclusive dealership agreement for the Russian Federation with its partner Premium Yachts , one of the leading dealers operating in the boating sector in Russia , which will represent the Ferretti Yachts , Pershing , Itama , Bertram , Riva e Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line brands.

The agreement – which was officially announced today during a press conference attended, among others, by Ferruccio Rossi (Ferretti Group’s CEO), Alexey Kurochkin (Premium Yachts’s President), and Stefano Campanelli (Sales Manager for the EMEA area for Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line) – is part of Ferretti Group’s strategy for a further expansion on the European markets offering the best short/medium-term growth perspectives, also thanks to the financial soundness regained following the strategic partnership forged with the Weichai Group.

More specifically, the Russian boating market holds a great potential for the Ferretti Group’s development because of the rapid growth of average wealth among the population and an increasing interest for Made in Italy luxury goods, like Ferretti Group yachts.

Through the renewal of the agreement with Premium Yachts, the Group will further strengthen its highly selected distribution network – which currently includes approximately 60 dealers ensuring the best possible customer care in more than 80 countries worldwide – as well as its presence in the traditional EMEA ( Europe , Middle East , Africa ) area, one of the three macro-regions (besides the America and the Asia-Pacific) into which the Group’s sales structure is divided.

Moreover, in a medium/long-term perspective, the Ferretti Group is expecting an increasing interest on the Russian market not only for flying bridge yachts above 70’ in length, but also towards smaller crafts, both flybridge and open/coupé ones, which are particularly suitable for river cruising or pleasure boating in Russia’s large lakes. Consequently, the renewal of the dealership agreement with Premium Yachts also allows to look ahead at the future aiming to conquer new market segments where less competitors are currently present in terms of both products and geographic location.

The press conference, which was held today at the Lotte Hotel in Moscow, had also the objective of introducing attending journalists and yachting enthusiasts to the main new products launched by the Ferretti Group over the last few months, namely: motor yacht Ferretti 870 , Ferretti 690 yacht , and the project of the new flagship Ferretti 960 superyacht for the Ferretti Yachts brand; luxury yacht Pershing 82 ’ and superyacht Pershing 108’ New Edition for Pershing; Riva 63’ Virtus and the project of the new Riva flagship, 122’ Mythos yacht , as well as the entire range of the Itama, Bertram and Mochi Craft brands.

The yachts launched over the last few months by CRN – the Group’s brand specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium yachts between 40 and 90 metres – were also presented during the conference: the two superyachts: CRN superyacht Jade (60 metres long) and CRN mega yacht Chopi Chopi (80 metres long), the latter being one of the largest pleasure vessels ever built in Italy and the largest one ever built by the Ancona-based shipyard.

“The renewal of our dealership agreement with an important partner like Premium Yachts – which has worked on the Russian market for almost 10 years and can boast an outstanding product knowledge and an excellent local market penetration – and the presentation of the Group’s latest models are an integral part of our development strategy on the EMEA markets offering the best growth perspectives in the short-medium term,” stated Ferruccio Rossi, Ferretti Group’s CEO. “The Moscow Boat Show 2013, which has now reached its sixth edition, will extend over approximately 45,000 square metres this year and will be attended by more than 350 international boating companies. This Show represents an interesting business opportunity for us and an unmissable event in terms of visibility, since we are identifying a considerable growth potential in this area thanks to the timeless attractiveness of our products – true ambassadors of Made in Italy production all over the world”.

Virginia news | caribbean officials search for 2 people who were on yacht allegedly hijacked by 3 escaped prisoners.

By DÁNICA COTO (Associated Press)

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in the eastern Caribbean said they were trying to locate two people believed to be U.S. citizens who were aboard a yacht that was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Friday that they were working on leads “that suggest” the two occupants of the yacht might have been killed.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage,” police said.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the owners as Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. It said they were “veteran cruisers” and longtime members of the association, calling them “warmhearted and capable.” A relative of Hendry didn’t return a message seeking comment Saturday.

The association said a cruising skipper had contacted the association about a member’s yacht, Simplicity, that was found “anchored and abandoned” off a beach on the island of St. Vincent.

“The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence,” the association said in a statement Thursday.

The association said Hendry and Brandel had sailed the yacht in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

“This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event,” said Bob Osborn, the association’s president. “In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this.”

Family members of those missing met with authorities in St. Vincent on Saturday, where they were seen boarding the yacht that was hijacked. It was being guarded by officials, one of whom was wearing latex gloves.

Hendry’s family issued a statement Saturday thanking police, local coast guards and all those who helped authorities gather information.

“It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible,” the family said.

They also asked that all those trying to conduct independent searches to “stand down.”

“The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches,” the family said.

Authorities in Grenada said they had dispatched senior investigators and a forensic specialist to the nearby island of St. Vincent, where the escaped prisoners were arrested Wednesday.

The prisoners, ages 19, 25 and 30, were charged a couple of months ago with one count of robbery with violence. The eldest inmate also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police in Grenada said.

The three men escaped from their holding cell Feb. 18, according to police.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation suggested the three men seized the yacht at Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, and traveled to St. Vincent.

American couple feared dead as escaped prisoners hijack yacht in Caribbean

A Virginia couple who were enjoying their retirement cruising the Caribbean on their yacht are feared dead after three escaped prisoners hijacked their vessel.

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel were docked on Sunday in the St. George's area of Grenada, which they frequent annually in the winter months when authorities say the three fugitives set upon them and stole their yacht called "Simplicity." The vessel is a catamaran, a type of sailing yacht with two hulls.

The prisoners, aged 30, 19, and 20, had been locked up on charges of violent robbery, with the eldest also being held on three counts of attempted rape.

The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) says the three prisoners were discovered near another Caribbean Island on Wednesday, but there was no sign of the couple.

Investigators say the boat was ransacked and that a violent act took place.

"The RGPF is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process," police said in a Thursday Facebook post. "It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens."

A GoFundMe post by Jessica Mause, who says she is a close friend of one of the couple’s sons, wrote that they were dead.

"It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the senseless act of violence that tragically claimed the lives of husband and wife, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. Their lives ended in unimaginable tragedy… off the shores of Grand Anse Beach, Grenada."

However, Hendry’s sister, Suellen Desmarais, told FOX 5 that she is keeping faith they are alive and is still trying to figure out what happened.

SUGGESTED: Tropical resorts popular with Americans no longer 'off limits' for cartel killers: 'The rules have changed'

"Why would I presume anyone is dead with no body and DNA? I want to remain positive. I want to believe that they are alive," said Desmarais, who shared some details about the heartbreaking incident.

"On Sunday, they went into the town around 3 o’clock because another boater saw them go into town. And then the other boater, when he went to bed, he noticed that they were there because you always look to see who is around you and in the morning, when the boater woke up they were gone," Desmarais said.

The RGPF said it had taken the three prisoners into custody; Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; Trevon Robertson, a 19-year-old unemployed man and Abita Stanislaus, a 20-year-old farmer. They are all locals from Paradise in Grenada and had been locked up since December, police said.

Mause wrote that the couple were experienced adventurers who spent their retirement sailing aboard Simplicity in the winters and then traveled to New England in the summer.

Nicole Parker, a former FBI special agency and Fox News contributor says she fears the worst for the couple.

"My suspicion is the suspects forced them to sail where they wanted to get to, probably had a violent interaction, killed them, dumped them overboard and went on their way," Parker told Fox News Digital.

She said that the FBI are often called to other countries to help with their investigations if requested to do so and that the suspects could still be prosecuted even if the couple's bodies are not recovered. It is unclear whether the FBI have been called upon to investigate this incident.

"Hopefully they've required the assistance of the FBI, such as its evidence response team, to bring justice to these individuals who likely hurt or killed U.S. citizens," said Parker, who has investigated violent crimes involving U.S. citizens in international waters.

She said that U.S. tourists should remain vigilant at all times when visiting foreign countries.

"Sometimes we let our guards down when on vacation. We always have to be aware and alert, because unfortunately, there are people out there who have no respect for human life."

"Never live in fear, but follow your gut, and keep your head on a swivel."

Hendry and Brandel were part of a sailing association called the Salty Dog. Its president, Rob Osborn, said that instances like this are uncommon in Grenada. He said he had received a message from a person who had seen the yacht abandoned and then had called local authorities.

Get updates on this story at FOXNews.com

"This is a tragedy that has shaken our community," Osborn told FOX 5. He also lives on the sea.

"There are literally hundreds of people who do what I do in the winter. I just want everyone to know that this is very rare. When people ask us if we worry about pirates, the answer is ‘No,’ these are friendly islands. "Whether you are in New York City, Chicago or here, sometimes bad things happen, and this is heinous."

Missing Virginia couple's yacht found ransacked in the Caribbean

The family of a northern Virginia couple is holding out hope after the two went missing while sailing in the Caribbean.

Authorities in Grenada believe the couple were killed by escaped prisoners who stole their yacht.

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel have been known to take trips to go cruising around Grenada. Their family told FOX 5 this is something they always do – live on their boat during the winter months. It's an escape from their home in Falls Church, Virginia.

But as of Friday, the two of them are missing.

According to reports from investigators in the Caribbean, their boat was found abandoned in Saint Vincent.

The reports claim it was "ransacked" and it was apparent that a violent act took place.

There are three men in custody in connection to the Virginia couple's disappearance. Detectives in Grenada say the men are prisoners who were already facing robbery and rape charges.

The men escaped their holding cell on Sunday, Feb. 18. Sometime in between then and Wednesday, investigators believe they made contact with Ralph and Kathy on their boat.

In a press release, the Royal Grenada Police Force says they are "working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process. It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens."

Ralph Hendry’s sister, Suellen Desmarais, is still trying to figure out what happened, but told FOX 5, she’s keeping faith alive.

"On Sunday, they went into the town around 3 o’clock because another boater saw them go into town. And then the other boater, when he went to bed, he noticed that they were there cause you always look to see who is around you and in the morning, when the boater woke up they were gone," Desmarais said. "Why would I presume anyone is dead with no body and DNA? I want to remain positive. I want to believe that they are alive."

Ralph and Kathy were part of a sailing association called the Salty Dog .

The president of the group, Rob Osborn — who also lives on the sea — received a message from a good Samaritan who saw the abandoned yacht. He called local authorities before informing the couple's family.

"This is a tragedy that has shaken our community," Osborn said. "There are literally 100s of people who do what I do in the winter. I just want everyone to know that this is very rare."

"When people ask us if we worry about pirates, the answer is ‘no.’ These are friendly islands," he continued. "Whether you are in NYC, Chicago or here, sometimes bad things happen. And this is heinous."

FOX 5 has learned that Kathy and Ralph's children are in the Caribbean at the moment working with local authorities on this investigation.

We have reached out to the Coast Guard and the State Department about this case, and are waiting to hear back.

Amba Kak creates policy recommendations to address AI concerns

To give AI-focused women academics and others their well-deserved — and overdue — time in the spotlight, TechCrunch is launching a series of interviews focusing on remarkable women who’ve contributed to the AI revolution. Amba Kak is the executive director of the AI Now Institute, where she helps create policy recommendations to address AI concerns. It's not a straightforward question because "AI" is a term that's in vogue to describe practices and systems that have been evolving for a long time now; I've been working on technology policy for over a decade and in multiple parts of the world and witnessed when everything was about "big data," and then everything became about "AI".

Americans believed dead after police say their yacht was hijacked in Grenada remembered as warm-hearted couple

The two Americans who may have been killed after their yacht was allegedly hijacked in Grenada by three prison escapees are being remembered as a warm-hearted couple by those who know them.

The pair have been identified by their sailing club as Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry, a couple from Virginia who were spending the winter cruising the Eastern Caribbean after sailing their yacht, Simplicity, from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the couple, but police in Grenada have said they have three men back in custody who escaped from prison on February 18 and may have killed two people believed to be US citizens.

“Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry are veteran cruisers and long-time members of the Salty Dawg Sailing Association from its earliest days. Warm hearted and capable, they both contributed to building the SDSA and Kathy sat on the association’s board for two years,” the Salty Dawg Sailing Association said in a news release .

The club shared a statement from Brandel’s and Hendry’s family.

“We want to reach out to the entire cruiser community to express our gratitude for everyone that worked to gather information from eyewitnesses and provide search and rescue support. It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible,” Brandel’s son, Nick Buro and Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry said in a statement .

The family also called on other sailors and anyone not affiliated with the official investigation to stand down in their searches and thanked St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force and Coast Guards for their investigations.

“The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches,” the statement read.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established on behalf of Nick Buro to help fund the recovery of the yacht and the couple’s belongings, funeral costs and support.

CNN reached out to the families of the two Americans but has not received a response.

According to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association, the club’s executive director was contacted after a passing “good Samaritan” came across an abandoned yacht and found the club’s contact information.

“On Wednesday, February 21, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association Executive Director Tatja Hopman was alerted by a cruising skipper that a member’s yacht, Simplicity, was anchored and abandoned off a beach on the south coast of the Caribbean island of St. Vincent,” the club said. “The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence. Contact information for the SDSA was posted and the skipper contacted the Association.” The sailing association said the skipper also contacted the coast guard, who notified St. Vincent police.

Bob Osborn, the club’s president, offered condolences to the families and said the violence was unheard of.

“This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event – our hopes and prayers are with Ralph and Kathy and the family who love them,” Osborn said in a statement. “I have spoken to the families and have offered our deepest condolences and our assistance in any way possible. In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this.”

In a statement on Friday, the US State Department said it is “aware of these reports involving U.S. citizens. We are monitoring the situation and seeking additional information.”

On Saturday, Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force Superintendent Junior O. Simmons told CNN the suspects are cooperating with the investigation and more information would be released.

CNN’s Jillian Sykes, Abel Alvarado and Aaron Eggleston contributed to this report.
